In this paper, we present a system that estimates and visualizes muscle tensions in real time using optical motion capture and electromyography (EMG). The system overlays rendered musculoskeletal human model on top of a live video image of the subject. The subject therefore has an impression that he/she sees the muscles with tension information through the cloth and skin. The main technical challenge lies in real-time estimation of muscle tension. Since existing algorithms using mathematical optimization to distribute joint torques to muscle tensions are too slow for our purpose, we develop a new algorithm that computes a reasonable approximation of muscle tensions based on the internal connections between muscles known as neuronal binding. The algorithm can estimate the tensions of 274 muscles in only 16 ms, and the whole visualization system runs at about 15 fps. The developed system is applied to assisting sport training, and the user case studies show its usefulness. Possible applications include interfaces for assisting rehabilitation.  相似文献

The maximal tetanic tension developed by the simultaneous contraction of several slow motor units (measured tension) is always greater than the sum of the tensions developed by each unit individually (cumulated tension). Generally, the same holds true for fast units but, for measured tensions of same value, the difference between measured tensions and cumulated tensions is much smaller. It is sometimes negligible or even negative.  相似文献

The rise time of an isometric twitch, the tetanic tension, the twitch tetanus ratio, the frequency-tension relationship, and the height of the MUAP (motor unit action potential) were measured in fast twitch (medial gastrocnemius) and slow twitch (soleus) muscles of the cat immediately before, in the middle, and immediately after fatiguing isometric contractions at tensions of 30, 50 and 80% of each muscle's initial strength (tetanic tension recorded from the unfatigued muscle). Although the twitch-tetanus ratio was always less for the soleus than for the medial gastrocnemius muscles, the twitch-tetanus ratio for any one muscle was constant throughout the duration of fatiguing isometric contractions at any of the tensions examined. In contrast, the twitch tension and tetanic tension of the muscles were both less after the contractions, the largest reduction occurring for both muscles during contractions sustained at the lowest isometric tensions. The time to peak tension of an isometric twitch was prolonged for both muscles following the contractions. This was associated with a corresponding shift in the frequency tension relationship such that at the point of muscular fatigue, the muscles tetanized at lower frequencies of stimulation than did the unfatigued muscle. In contrast, the amplitude of the MUAP showed only a modest reduction throughout the duration of the fatiguing contractions.  相似文献

Determining tendon tensions of the finger muscles is crucial for the understanding and the rehabilitation of hand pathologies. Since no direct measurement is possible for a large number of finger muscle tendons, biomechanical modelling presents an alternative solution to indirectly evaluate these forces. However, the main problem is that the number of muscles spanning a joint exceeds the number of degrees of freedom of the joint resulting in mathematical under-determinate problems. In the current study, a method using both numerical optimization and the intra-muscular electromyography (EMG) data was developed to estimate the middle finger tendon tensions during static fingertip force production. The method used a numerical optimization procedure with the muscle stress squared criterion to determine a solution while the EMG data of three extrinsic hand muscles serve to enforce additional inequality constraints. The results were compared with those obtained with a classical numerical optimization and a method based on EMG only. The proposed method provides satisfactory results since the tendon tension estimations respected the mechanical equilibrium of the musculoskeletal system and were concordant with the EMG distribution pattern of the subjects. These results were not observed neither with the classical numerical optimization nor with the EMG-based method. This study demonstrates that including the EMG data of the three extrinsic muscles of the middle finger as inequality constraints in an optimization process can yield relevant tendon tensions with regard to individual muscle activation patterns, particularly concerning the antagonist muscles.  相似文献

We investigated the common assumption that severing stems and petioles under water preserves the hydraulic continuity in the xylem conduits opened by the cut when the xylem is under tension. In red maple and white ash, higher percent loss of conductivity (PLC) in the afternoon occurred when the measurement segment was excised under water at native xylem tensions, but not when xylem tensions were relaxed prior to sample excision. Bench drying vulnerability curves in which measurement samples were excised at native versus relaxed tensions showed a dramatic effect of cutting under tension in red maple, a moderate effect in sugar maple, and no effect in paper birch. We also found that air injection of cut branches (red and sugar maple) at pressures of 0.1 and 1.0 MPa resulted in PLC greater than predicted from vulnerability curves for samples cut 2 min after depressurization, with PLC returning to expected levels for samples cut after 75 min. These results suggest that sampling methods can generate PLC patterns indicative of repair under tension by inducing a degree of embolism that is itself a function of xylem tensions or supersaturation of dissolved gases (air injection) at the moment of sample excision. Implications for assessing vulnerability to cavitation and levels of embolism under field conditions are discussed.  相似文献

The present case study investigated the effects of competing task demands on biofeedback training to reduce frontalis muscle tension. Baseline levels of frontalis muscle tension were recorded for relaxation and problem solving. The subject was trained to decrease muscle tension with biofeedback for the problem-solving task alone. The results indicated that EMG training during problem-solving was successfully accomplished. Frontalis muscle tension during relaxation baseline did not change as a result of reductions in muscle tension during problem-solving feedback training. This suggests that the decrease of muscle tension cannot be attributed to reductions in overall muscle tension levels. Instead, training was specific to the problem-solving feedback phases. Additionally, it was found that accuracy in problem-solving did not decline as a result of simultaneous feedback training. Thus EMG biofeedback training can be accomplished and exercised without disruption of ongoing mental activity.  相似文献

Biochemical schemes for the actomyosin ATPase cycle as well as the cooperative regulation of ATPase activity are incorporated into a model of the contractile process of intact muscle. This model is shown to describe accurately the tension developed by skinned muscle fibers in the absence of Ca. This work adds to the evidence that the extrapolation of results from purified protein systems to intact muscle may be valid. Extensions to the case of Ca-activated tensions are discussed.  相似文献

The postnatal changes in resting muscle tension were investigated at 20 degrees C by using small muscle fiber bundles isolated from either the extensor digitorum longus or the soleus of both neonatal (7-21 days old) and adult rats. The results show that the tension-extension characteristics of the bundles depended on the age of the rats. For example, both the extensor digitorum longus and soleus bundles of rats older than 14 days showed characteristic differences that were absent in bundles from younger rats. Furthermore, the tension-extension relation of the adult slow muscle fiber bundles were similar to those of the two neonatal muscles and were shifted to longer sarcomere lengths relative to those of the adult fast-fiber bundles. Thus, at the extended sarcomere length of 2.9 microm, the adult fast muscle fiber bundles developed higher resting tensions (5.6 +/- 0.5 kN/m2) than either the two neonatal ( approximately 3 kN/m2) or the adult slow (3.1 +/- 0.4 kN/m2) muscle fiber bundles. At all ages examined, the resting tension responses to a ramp stretch were qualitatively similar and consisted of three components: a viscous, a viscoelastic, and an elastic tension. However, in rats older than 14 days, all three tension components showed clear fast- and slow-fiber type differences that were absent in younger rats. Bundles from 7-day-old rats also developed significantly lower resting tensions than the corresponding adult ones. Additionally, the resting tension characteristics of the adult muscles were not affected by chemical skinning. From these results, we conclude that in rats resting muscle tension, like active tension, differentiates within the first 3 wk after birth.  相似文献

True stress and Poisson's ratio of tendons during loading   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Excessive axial tension is very likely involved in the aetiology of tendon lesions, and the most appropriate indicator of tendon stress state is the true stress, the ratio of instantaneous load to instantaneous cross-sectional area (CSA). Difficulties to measure tendon CSA during tension often led to approximate true stress by assuming that CSA is constant during loading (i.e. by the engineering stress) or that tendon is incompressible, implying a Poisson's ratio of 0.5, although these hypotheses have never been tested. The objective of this study was to measure tendon CSA variation during quasi-static tensile loading, in order to assess the true stress to which the tendon is subjected and its Poisson's ratio. Eight equine superficial digital flexor tendons (SDFT, about 30cm long) were tested in tension until failure while the CSA of each tendon was measured in its metacarpal part by means of a linear laser scanner. Axial elongation and load were synchronously recorded during the test. CSA was found to linearly decrease with strain, with a mean decrease at failure of -10.7±2.8% (mean±standard deviation). True stress at failure was 7.1-13.6% higher than engineering stress, while stress estimation under the hypothesis of incompressibility differed from true stress of -6.6 to 2.3%. Average Poisson's ratio was 0.55±0.12 and did not significantly vary with load. From these results on equine SDFT it was demonstrated that tendon in axial quasi-static tension can be considered, at first approximation, as an incompressible material.  相似文献

Threads of contractile proteins were formed via extrusion and their isometric tensions and isotonic contraction velocities were measured. We obtained reproducible data by using a new and sensitive tensiometer. The force-velocity curves of actomyosin threads were similar to those of muscle, with isometric tensions of the order of 10g/cm2 and maximum contraction velocites of the order of 10(-2) lengths/s. The data could be fitted by Hill's equation. Addition of tropomyosin and troponin to the threads increased isometric tension and maximum contraction velocity. Threads which contained troponin and tropomyosin required Ca++ for contraction and the dependence of their isometric tension on the level of free Ca++ was like that of muscle. The dependence of tension or of contraction velocity upon temperature or upon ionic strength is similar for actomyosin threads and muscle fibers. In contrast, the dependence of most parameters which are characteristic of the actomyosin interaction in solution (or suspension) upon these variables is not similar to the dependence of the muscle fiber parameters. The conclusion we have drawn from these results is that the mechanism of tension generation in the threads is similar to the mechanism that exists in muscle. Because the protein composition of the thread system can be manipulated readily and because the tensions and velocities of the threads can be related directly to the physiological parameters of muscle fibers, the threads provide a powerful method for studying contractile proteins.  相似文献

This investigation examined the mechanical responses of malignant hyperthermic (MH) and normal porcine skeletal muscle to repetitive stimulation. Twitch and maximal tetanic tensions were not significantly different between muscle types. Tensions produced during stimulation at 20-80 Hz were significantly less in MH muscle than in normal muscle. In addition, MH muscle showed significantly greater force decline (tetanic fade) at the end of contractions evoked by 20-80 Hz stimulation. When stimulated to fatigue, both normal and MH muscle exhibited similar rates of tension decline during the initial minutes. Further stimulation caused additional decline in normal muscle, but a tension plateau in MH muscle. In all cases, normal muscle had greater magnitudes of fatigue than did MH muscle. Results show that there are marked differences between MH and normal muscle in the mechanical responses to repetitive stimulation. Due to its inability to properly regulate intracellular Ca2+ exchange, it is possible that MH muscle might be a useful tool for identifying the mechanisms of muscle fatigue in normal muscle.  相似文献

This study tested two theories about the relationship between voluntary changes in muscle tension and pulmonary function in asthma. Kotses has theorized that decreased facial muscle tension decreases respiratory impedance via a hypothesized vagaltrigeminal reflex, but that muscle tension in other muscle groups has no such effect. Others have suggested that decreased thoracic muscle tension improves pulmonary function. Subjects were 19 volunteer asthmatic adults. They performed 3-minute cycles of deliberate muscle contraction, alternating two each for the shoulder and forehead muscles, followed by dominant forearm contraction. Surface EMG was measured from the frontalis and right trapezius areas. Airway impedance was measured by forced oscillation pneumography. Cardiac interbeat interval and respiratory sinus arrhythmia were measured to assess vagal tone. Frequency dependence of respiratory impedance increased during shoulder tension, giving some support to the theory relating thoracic tension to impairment in pulmonary function. Correlational analyses suggested a negative relationship between changes in cardiac interbeat interval and both frontalis muscle tension and decreased compliance of tissues in the airways. These findings are the opposite of those predicted by the vagal-trigeminal reflex theory.  相似文献

Our goal was to determine the influence of a complete lack of neuromuscular activity, during a period of rapid muscle growth, on muscle morphology and contractile function. Rats, 21 days old, had one hindlimb paralyzed for a period of 7-9 consecutive days by repetitive implantation of a silastic cuff containing tetrodotoxin (TTX), a specific nerve impulse conduction blocker, around the sciatic nerve. In situ isometric contractile properties of gastrocnemius were measured at 31 days of age, and muscles were subsequently examined histologically. Normal growth during this period resulted in a two- to three-fold increase in muscle weights, mean muscle fiber cross-sectional areas and increases in absolute twitch and tetanic tensions. After inactivity from 21 to 30 days of age, gastrocnemius muscles were smaller, and tetanically weaker, than age-matched controls. The normal cross-sectional area increase of fast-twitch fibers was preferentially affected. Inactive muscles also demonstrated significantly slower twitch responses, had higher twitch:tetanus ratios and relative tensions at 25 Hz than age-matched controls, suggesting a "slower" contractile response. On the other hand, maximum rate of tetanic tension development was elevated. These effects of inactivity appeared to be reversed by resumption of normal activity for 4 days. Neuromuscular inactivity during a relatively short period of rapid muscle growth causes significant muscle morphological and contractile changes, which are most likely reversible.  相似文献

To clarify whether sympathetic nerve activity increases in relation to the tension of a sustained muscle contraction, muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSA) was recorded directly from the peroneal nerve fascicle at the popliteal fossa by means of tungsten microelectrodes in five healthy male subjects. A sustained muscle contraction was performed by handgrip for two minutes in a supine position at tensions of 10, 30 and 45% of maximal grip strength (MGS). MSA, electrocardiogram (ECG) using bipolar electrodes from the chest and surface electromyogram (EMG) from the extensor pollicis longus were recorded simultaneously before and during the sustained handgrip. Arterial blood pressure was measured at the resting upper arm by auscultation. During handgrip with tensions of 10, 30 and 45% MGS, average MSA burst rate (bursts X min-1) increased to 122, 152 and 230% of the resting value, respectively. During the same experimental procedures with tensions of 10, 30 and 45% MGS, average heart rate increased to 105, 110 and 111% of the resting value. These results confirm that sympathetic outflow to a resting muscle is increased with elevation of tension in an active muscle. This process would promote perfusion pressure in the active muscle.  相似文献

The change-in-ratio technique is a useful practical procedure for the estimation of game animal population sizes. The major problem with this technique is failure of the assumption that both types of animals are captured or sighted with equal probabilities. Here we extend the change-in-ratio technique to the case where there are two removals with emphasis on the special situation where there are two consecutive single-type removals. The advantage of this extension is that it allows an estimation procedure which is robust to unequal capture or sighting probabilities. It is also possible to test the assumption of equal sighting probabilities. Some numerical results on mean squared error of the population size estimator for the new design and the traditional design are given. The procedure is illustrated on some juvenile grass carp data collected in a small pond where the population size is known. We believe this technique is potentially useful to wildlife and fisheries biologists and that more statistical research would be beneficial.  相似文献

Potassium (K+) contracture tension, measured in small bundles of rat soleus muscle fibers during maintained depolarization, increases to a peak value and then decays either to the baseline or to a pedestal level. We have tested the hypothesis that the rise and fall of tension are determined by independent activation and inactivation processes. If the “Independence” hypothesis is correct, tension during the decay of K+ contractures should equal tension predicted from the product of the activation and inactivation parameters determined from the same K+ contractures. Both the measured and predicted tensions decayed to a pedestal level that was increased in amplitude in the presence of perchlorate ions. However, the measured tensions in normal solutions and in the presence of perchlorate were three to five times smaller than the predicted tensions. This result indicates that the activation and inactivation of processes controlling the rise and decay of K+ contracture tension are not independent.  相似文献

An appraisal of the role of tendons in transmitting muscle tension to skeletal parts during posture and movement requires accurate knowledge of the mechanical characteristics of the tendon. Here the most important property is tendon stiffness. While it is relatively easy to measure the stiffness of an isolated segment of tendon, more sophisticated methods must be sought to take into account the whole length of tendon, including its intramuscular portion. Two methods are currently available for measurement of whole tendon stiffness: each has a limited range of muscle tensions over which it appears to provide reliable values, one method being better at low tensions, the other at high tensions. Some controversy remains about the precise values obtained in the mid-tension range covered by both methods. Nevertheless it is now possible to achieve reasonable estimates of tendon stiffness over the whole working range of the muscle. An important consideration which has emerged from the discussion is that at low tensions the tendon is much less stiff than at higher tensions.  相似文献

Background

The ability to estimate the evolutionary distance between extant genomes plays a crucial role in many phylogenomic studies. Often such estimation is based on the parsimony assumption, implying that the distance between two genomes can be estimated as the rearrangement distance equal the minimal number of genome rearrangements required to transform one genome into the other. However, in reality the parsimony assumption may not always hold, emphasizing the need for estimation that does not rely on the rearrangement distance. The distance that accounts for the actual (rather than minimal) number of rearrangements between two genomes is often referred to as the true evolutionary distance. While there exists a method for the true evolutionary distance estimation, it however assumes that genomes can be broken by rearrangements equally likely at any position in the course of evolution. This assumption, known as the random breakage model, has recently been refuted in favor of the more rigorous fragile breakage model postulating that only certain “fragile” genomic regions are prone to rearrangements.

Results

We propose a new method for estimating the true evolutionary distance between two genomes under the fragile breakage model. We evaluate the proposed method on simulated genomes, which show its high accuracy. We further apply the proposed method for estimation of evolutionary distances within a set of five yeast genomes and a set of two fish genomes.

Conclusions

The true evolutionary distances between the five yeast genomes estimated with the proposed method reveals that some pairs of yeast genomes violate the parsimony assumption. The proposed method further demonstrates that the rearrangement distance between the two fish genomes underestimates their evolutionary distance by about 20%. These results demonstrate how drastically the two distances can differ and justify the use of true evolutionary distance in phylogenomic studies.

The single-breath method of Kim et al. (J. Appl. Physiol. 21: 1338-1344, 1966) for the estimation of pulmonary blood flow is based on a single-alveolus lung model for which an analytical relationship has been established between the kinetic behavior of the alveolar O2 and CO2 tensions and the pulmonary blood flow. The analysis is based on the assumption that the dead-space contribution to the expirate is negligible after expiration of a predefined volume. We have examined the influence of this assumption on the estimation of pulmonary blood flow by computer simulation in a lung model that incorporates deadspace contribution to the expirate. Data on the fractional contribution of the dead space to the expired gas were obtained from Tsunoda et al.'s study (J. Appl. Physiol. 32: 644-649, 1972) on the emptying pattern of normal adult lungs. The results show that failure to take account of the dead-space contribution can cause an underestimation in the pulmonary blood flow of greater than 30%. The error can be reduced by ignoring the first part of the expiration but only at the cost of an increase in the sensitivity of the single-breath method to measurement noise. This property of the system is demonstrated experimentally. The error due to dead-space admixture depends on the total volume of dead-space gas, the measurement noise, the pulmonary blood flow, and the emptying characteristics of the dead-space compartment during expiration. In normal subjects it is possible to optimize the experimental design so that the systematic error is less than 5% and the coefficient of variation is less than 10%.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
