Using various three-dimensional traps alone and in combination with the onion volatile, dipropyl-disulphide (Pr2S2), we found that visual behaviour of female onion flies, Delia antiqua (Meigen), varied with the visual context (background composition and trap spacing) in which traps were presented and the females' reproductive state (mated vs. unmated). Against a background of real onions, females alighted more frequently on spherical than cylindrical traps, and white than green spheres, but females responded equally to white and green cylinders. In an onion field, baiting traps with Pr2S2 significantly increased female response to white over green traps, but had no influence on their response to trap shape. When traps were spaced 10 m apart and against a background of bare soil, females orienting to Pr2S2 baits alighted more frequently on vertical than horizontal traps, but shape and spectral reflectance were insignificant. However, when traps were spaced 0.25 m apart, females orienting to Pr2S2 baits alighted more frequently on cylinders than spheres. Mated females alighted more frequently on green than white cylinders, but unmated females responded to cylinders independent of spectral reflectance. When located 20 m downwind from Pr2S2 baits, mated females alighted on green cylinders significantly more often than unmated females. Response to traps mimicking onion plants suggests that ovipositional host-finding in female onion flies is dominated by olfactory responses at long range (several metres) and by visual cues at short-range (ca. 1 m). The view that host location by female onion flies is a hierarchical response pattern mediated by multiple sensory modalities and modified by resource level (habitat) and reproductive status, is discussed.  相似文献

We describe behavioral sequences and daily activities of pre-ovipositing and ovipositing females of Cephalonomia stephanoderis (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae), an ectoparasitoid of the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Coleoptera: Scolytidae). Noticeable behavioral differences among preovipositing and ovipositing females include host examination, host stinging—probing, host feeding, and the oviposition per se. The female of C. stephanoderis feeds primarily on host eggs, but pupae are also exploited, mainly by pre-ovipositing females. After the onset of the oviposition period, C. stephanoderis examines the pupae repeatedly, stings them at frequent intervals, and spends more time feeding than during the pre-oviposition period. Host paralysis is linked both to host feeding and oviposition. It induces irreversible developmental arrest, which presumably allows preservation of the host until subsequent utilization, and contributes to successful offspring development, particularly by reducing host motility. Oviposition consists in a host selection process, a prolonged period of preparation of the potential host, and the egg-laying phase itself. Under our experimental conditions, pre-ovipositing and ovipositing females are active 17% and 36% of the day, respectively. Host handling time averages 6% and 23% in pre-ovipositing and ovipositing females, respectively. All coffee berry borer developmental stages are exploited by C. stephanoderis females, either for host feeding and/or oviposition activities. Such flexible behavior is advantageous given that host availability is limited inside the coffee berries.  相似文献

Butterflies in the genera Heliconius and Laparus obtain fitness-related benefits from using amino acids derived from pollen. These butterflies have morphological features of the proboscis that facilitate pollen-feeding. Here we investigate behavioral characteristics potentially involved in pollen-gathering. Analysis of four behavioral characters showed that pollen-feeding species manipulate Lantana flowers faster and more thoroughly compared to non-pollen-feeding relatives. Although this suggests that pollen-feeding species are potentially more efficient in harvesting pollen, every butterfly tested successfully removed pollen from Lantana and non-pollen-feeding butterflies generally extracted larger amounts of pollen than Heliconius and Laparus. Morphological characteristics of the proboscis and the production of abundant fluid exudate help keep pollen attached in the proboscis for long periods of time—possibly key to Heliconius' and Laparus' ability to obtain amino acids from pollen. Our results, in concert with those of previous morphological analysis, indicate that behavioral and structural attributes associated with pollen-feeding in Heliconius and Laparus are subtle modifications of widespread butterfly characteristics and raise the question why other butterflies do not use pollen in their diet.  相似文献

Grooming behavior was studied in adult females of the mosquito Aedes triseriatus(Say). The grooming repertoire consisted of 12 different behaviors (accounting for bilateral symmetry) organized into five sequences. The proboscis and antennae were scraped by the forelegs, whereas the dorsal and ventral surfaces of the wings, and the forelegs, midlegs, hindlegs, and tip of the abdomen were scraped by the hindlegs. Each sequence ended with hindleg groomng. Tibial grooming combs were found on the ventral apices of the fore- and hind-tibiae but not on the mid-tibiae. A multidimensional scaling procedure grouped the grooming behaviors in two ways: (1) by the relative position of the groomed structure along the anteroposterior axis of the insect's body, and (2) by whether the groomed structure has a locomotory or sensory function. This suggests that mosquitoes groom both to clear sensilla of obstructive matter and to clean and smooth scales on legs and wings, possibly to decrease drag during flight.  相似文献

In laboratory dual-choice assays females of the cabbage root fly, Delia radicum, prefer for oviposition plants with roots damaged by conspecific larvae to undamaged controls. Cauliflower and kale plants were inoculated with root fly eggs (25 per plant) and the hatching larvae were allowed to feed on the roots for various periods of time (1–17 days). After 4 (cauliflower) or 5 (kale) days of larval feeding the oviposition preference was most pronounced and flies laid between 64% and 68% of their eggs near plants with damaged roots. Later, with increasing damage but fewer surviving, and thus actively feeding, larvae, the magnitude of the preference declined. The preference for plants already damaged by conspecific larvae may contribute to the previously observed aggregated distribution of D. radicum eggs in Brassica crop fields.Further experiments revealed that the sensory cues inducing this oviposition preference originate from the complex consisting of the damaged roots, the surrounding substrate (soil) and associated microbes, rather than from the aerial plant parts. In choice assays using the root-substrate complex of damaged and control plants (aerial parts removed), the observed preference for damaged roots was similar to that found for the entire plant but was more pronounced. The damaged roots alone, compared to control roots, received up to 72% (cauliflower) and 75% (kale) of the eggs. By contrast, surrogate leaves sprayed with methanolic leaf surface extracts from the most preferred plants which had been damaged were not discriminated from surrogate leaved sprayed with extracts of the respective control plants. Analysis of glucosinolate levels in methanolic leaf surface extracts revealed that root damage resulted in enhanced concentrations of indole-glucosinolates on the leaf surface in kale but not in cauliflower. Although indole-glucosinolates are oviposition stimulants for the cabbage root fly, the induced changes were apparently too small to influence oviposition behaviour.  相似文献

Ovipositional responses of apple maggot (AM), Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh), females were studied in the laboratory on apples (var: Golden Delicious) treated with different rates of four protein hydrolysate baits in choice and no-choice tests. Protein hydrolysate baits at rates of 0.5 and 1% had no significant effect, but oviposition was greatly reduced at higher rates of 5 and 10%. Apple maggot females exposed to apples treated with protein hydrolysate baits at a rate of 10% made 41–71% fewer punctures and laid 41–73% fewer eggs than in untreated control. No oviposition activity was shown on apples treated with 25 and 100% Nulure®. In no-choice tests the AM females laid 75–96% fewer eggs in apples treated with 10 and 25% Nulure compared to controls and no oviposition occurred in apples treated with 100% Nulure. Apple maggot females arrived in similar numbers on apples treated with 10% Nulure and untreated apples, but only 5% of those arriving on Nulure-treated apples showed ovipositor boring with no egg deposition while 60% of females arriving on untreated apples showed ovipositor boring activity and laid an average of 2.5 eggs per apple. In another experiment, individual AM females displayed similar behavioral responses to 10% Nulure-treated apples; none of the 56 females tested on treated apples displayed ovipositor boring activity, but 59% of the females (N=56) tested on untreated apples displayed ovipositor boring within 5 min of their arrival. Ninetyeight percent of AM females stayed and fed on fruit surfaces for 5 min on Nulure-treated apples without ovipositor boring compared to only 2% on untreated apples. Of the females that arrived on untreated apples, 39% flew away within 5 min without ovipositor boring compared to only 2% of those that arrived on Nulure-treated apples. Results of these two behavioral experiments suggest that upon arrival on a protein bait-treated apple, an apparent change of behavior occurs in AM females and instead of attempting to oviposit, they attempt to feed on fruit surfaces resulting in reduced oviposition activity. These results indicate that the feeding and oviposition-related activities of AM females are probably mutually exclusive and that the feeding behavior preempts oviposition activities on host fruits treated with higher rates of protein hydrolysate baits.  相似文献

An ethanolic extract of cabbage leaves (Brassica oleraceavar. capitata,Golden Acre)and derived fractions were tested on natural and surrogate leaves in order to study the oviposition behavior of the cabbage root fly Delia radicum(Diptera: Anthomyiidae). On surrogate plastic leaves coated with a thin layer of paraffin wax and treated with 0.1 gram leaf equivalent (gle) of an ethanolic raw cabbage extract, the females displayed the same sequence of behavioral patterns as on a natural host plant. The quantified oviposition behavior correlated well with the actual number of eggs laid. The extract-treated surrogate leaves received at least as many eggs as natural leaves with a similar surface area. Previous exposure to surrogate or natural leaves seemed not to induce a specific preference. The three fractions (hexane, butanol, and water) of the raw extract stimulated the oviposition behavior. This was taken as evidence for the presence of a multicomponent mixture or a chemical pattern in the cabbage leaves stimulating oviposition. At the tested concentration each fraction alone could stimulate in some individuals the complete behavior. No effect of volatile components of the raw extract could be detected. This is thought to be due to the extraction procedure, which limits the production of attractive, volatile compounds, such as isothiocyanates.  相似文献

Anagrus atomus L. is an important egg parasitoid of the green leafhopper Empoasca decipiens Paoli. In this study the ability of the parasitoid to locate and parasitize its host was investigated on four host plants, i.e., broad beans (Vicia faba L.), sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), and French beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). For each plant species, the behavior of the parasitoid was observed on E. decipiens infested and noninfested plants. Searching and oviposition behavior were characterized by drumming, probing, and resting. Parasitoids spent significantly less time on non-infested than infested plants, 274.5 and 875.7 s, respectively, and no probing behavior was observed on non-infested plants. Frequency of resting behavior was significantly greater on non-infested than on infested plants. Total foraging time was significantly longer on infested than on non-infested plants, indicating that A. atomus females can efficiently discriminate between leaves with and without infestation. Parasitism of A. atomus was influenced by parasitoid density, with the highest parasitism rate (64.0%) obtained at a density of 10 A. atomus females/0.1356 m2 but the number of parasitized eggs per female and the searching efficiency decreased with increasing parasitoid density.  相似文献

The oviposition responses of Cryptolaemus montrouzieri Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) to the soft scale Eupulvinaria hydrangeae (Steinweden) (Homoptera: Coccidae) and to the mealybug Planococcus citri (Risso) (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae) have been compared in the laboratory. The females delay oviposition and withhold mature eggs in their lateral oviducts in the absence of wax filaments produced by the prey (only present in the ovisac of E. hydrangeae, present in all stages of P. citri). Contact chemical cues perceived by females when probing the wax filaments with their mouthparts are the signals inducing the search for oviposition sites. The second step is under the control of the ovipositor by which females locate confined sites to lay eggs. This oviposition behaviour could have a considerable impact on the prey exploitation strategy of this important biocontrol agent and might help to understand its apparent ineffectiveness in situations of low prey density.  相似文献

A comparison of the effects of foliar and soil N application was made in field-grown mature fruiting Gala/M9 apple trees (Malus domestica Borkh) in 2001 and 2002 growing seasons under Pacific Northwest growing conditions in southern British Columbia, Canada. The trees, six years old at the start of the experiment, were treated: (1) with 5 g/l urea sprays supplied every two weeks (7 times) from mid May to mid August (total about 50 g N/tree/year), (2) with the same amount of N applied to the soil with the same timing and quantity as for the foliar treatment, and (3) with no N (control). Leaf color (as SPAD readings) and N concentrations (mg/g), and soil NH4+-N and NO3-N were measured periodically throughout the two seasons. Leached NO3-N was monitored monthly via an anion exchange probe from June to October in 2001 and from May to November in 2002. Shoot length was measured in October and N concentration of one-year-old wood and roots was determined in December of each growing s eason. Soil N application significantly increased shoot length relative to control or foliar N application. Leaf color, leaf N, and N concentration of one-year-old wood and roots were similarly increased relative to control by both soil and foliar N application. These treatments also increased fruit yield relative to control. There was no significant difference in yield and fruit quality between soil and foliar N applications. Soil N application increased soil NH4+-N and NO3-N content in the root zone, and also increased the NO3 leaching loss below the root zone especially late in the growing season. Our results suggested that tree N status and yield and fruit quality could be maintained by multiple urea sprays during the growing season in apple orchards, and foliar N application will reduce the risk of soil NO3-N leaching.  相似文献

Quantitative data are presented on the effects of subject sex, partner sex,and kinship on the social interactions of 18 juveniles of the Oregon troop of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata).Data on these subjects as infants were also used to detail maturational changes in partner sex preferences. Nine males and nine females, whose multiparous mothers represented a cross section of dominance ranks, were observed using a focal-animal technique. Juveniles of both sexes engaged in more proximity, contact, grooming, mounting, aggression, and social play with kin than with nonkin partners. They initiated less contact with females and more contact with males during their second year. They initiated more grooming and aggression during their second year than their first year, with females displaying a strong preference for grooming females and males specifically aggressing males more during the second year. Aggression was higher between same-sexed partners than between opposite-sexed partners. Males engaged in more social interactions with males during the second year than the first year of life. Males played more than females during both years. Males played more with males during the second year than the first year, and males played with males more than did females during the second year. We conclude that sex differences in behavioral frequencies become evident during the first year of life, and sex differences in partner preferences emerge during the second year of life.  相似文献

Priming is a technique used to improve seedling establishment of direct-seeded crops such as onion and carrot, resulting in a quick and uniform emergence. This work investigated the application of four selected beneficial microorganisms (Pseudomonas chlororaphis MA342, Pseudomonas fluorescens CHA0, Clonostachys rosea IK726d11 and Trichoderma harzianum T22) to onion and carrot seed during drum priming, and their subsequent survival and establishment in the rhizosphere once the seed was planted. Different application rates of fungi (7 log10 cfu g−1 dry seed) and bacteria (6 log10 cfu g−1 dry seed) were required on onion to achieve the end target of 5 log10 cfu g−1 dry seed, whereas a lower rate (5 log10 cfu g−1 dry seed for both bacteria and fungi) was successful on carrot. Microorganism-treated seed was planted in soil in the glasshouse and root and rhizosphere soil samples were taken at 2, 4 and 8 weeks post-planting. All seed-applied microorganisms were recovered throughout the experiment, although differences in the survival patterns were seen. The bacterial isolates declined in number over time, with P. fluorescens CHA0 showing better overall survival than P. chlororaphis MA342, particularly on the roots and in the rhizosphere soil of carrot. In contrast to the bacteria, the fungal isolate C. rosea IK726d11 showed good survival on both onion and carrot, and increased significantly in number throughout the 8-week period. Trichoderma harzianum T22 remained relatively constant in number throughout the experiment, but showed better survival on carrot than onion roots. Similar results were found in three different soil-types.  相似文献

We have described the feeding behavior of the frugivorous butterfly Morpho peleides (Butler 1872) under various conditions and tested its ability to take up fluid from selected natural and artificial food sources in comparison with the nectarvorous Vanessa cardui (Linnaeus 1758). Both nymphalids showed similar probing behavior except for one particular proboscis movement and the fact that M. peleides was unable to feed from Lantana flowers. In 2-min feeding trials, M. peleides imbibed a greater amount of fluid from the food sources, with the most conspicuous difference on rotting banana. Without time restriction, M. peleides gained a significantly greater percentage of body weight from soaked plotting paper, whereas nosignificant difference occurred from tubular artificial flowers. The ability of M. peleides to feed more efficiently from wet surfaces than V. cardui is discussed in context with proboscis morphology.  相似文献

Females of the apple maggot fly,Rhagoletis pomonella, were allowed for 3 days to alight upon and oviposit in green or red 18- to 20-mm hawthorn host fruit (Crategus mollis) or green or red 45- to 55-mm apple host fruit (Malus pumila) hung from branches of potted host trees in field enclosures. Subsequently, when females were released individually on potted host trees harboring fruit of one of these types, their ability to find fruit of unfamiliar size proved unaffected by prior experience with fruit but their ability to find fruit of unfamiliar color was significantly affected. Specifically, females exposed to red hawthorns or red apples were less able to find green hawthorns or green apples than were females experienced with either of the latter fruit types. Fruit odor was found to have no effect on female ability to find familiar compared with unfamiliar green fruit. In contrast, a difference in size (or surface chemistry) between familiar and unfamiliar fruit but not a difference in fruit color had a significant negative influence on the propensity of alighting females to bore into unfamiliar fruit. Three bouts of experience with alighting upon and ovipositing into fruit over a period of about 1 h had no detectable effect on female ability to find unfamiliar fruit but did reduce propensity to bore into unfamiliar fruit. Our findings are discussed in relation to insect ability to learn visual and chemical stimuli of resources and insect propensity to form host races. We also discuss the potential impact of our findings on nonpesticidal, behavioral methods of managingR. pomonella in commercial apple orchards.  相似文献

Paysandisia archon (Burmeister, 1880) (Lepidoptera: Castniidae) is a South American insect developing on palms and recently introduced in Europe where it damages most palm species. Understanding the oviposition behaviour would be decisive for risk assessment and pest management but key points on oviposition behaviour are missing. Using wind tunnel and field experiments, we investigated the oviposition timing, the attraction behaviour of mated females to palms and the different steps of oviposition behaviour. Results showed that oviposition behaviour occurred between 3 pm and 6 pm. In the field, gravid females were significantly more attracted by the palm crown than virgin females. The ovipositing females exhibited distinctive steps before ovipositing. Subsequent to alighting on the crown, pre-oviposition behaviour was characterized by two main behavioural steps: walking and probing the surface with antennae and ovipositor. After the choice of oviposition place, the gravid female remains motionless and the extendible ovipositor is deeply introduced into the upper fibrous part of the crown. About 10 eggs can be lays at the same place. Finally, the female starts to walk again and reinitiates the same behavioural sequences. This paper supports the hypothesis that odours from the crown may play a key role in gravid female attraction. The study assessed that P. archon lays on the palm crown, the part of the palm that should be treated for population monitoring.  相似文献

Pythium irregulare andPythium coloratum were isolated consistently from roots of onion plants exhibiting root rot and associated foliar symptoms in fields located in Organe County, NY.P. coloratum predominated following extremely wet weather in 1984 and 1986, whileP. irregulare was prevalent following moderately wet weather in 1985. Both species produced root rot symptoms similar to field symptoms when 12 week old onion plants (cv Downing Yellow Globe) were inoculated and incubated in a growth chamber at 14°C for 10 days. This is the first report ofP. irregulare andP. coloratum as causes of root rot of onion.  相似文献

A ca. 5.5-kb region of Pseudomonas resinovorans genome containing the polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biosynthesis locus was sequenced. Three complete open-reading-frames (ORFs), i.e., phaC1 Pr, phaZ Pr, and phaC2 Pr, were identified. Using this sequence information, phaC1 Pr was PCR-cloned from P. resinovorans genomic DNA and expressed in E. coli as shown by a Nile Red plate assay and gas chromatography/mass spectrometric analysis.  相似文献

The onion (Allium cepa L.) bulb has a high level of glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity, and it is a rich source of sulfur compounds as well as flavonoids. To investigate interactions between onion bulb GSTs and metabolites, we separated onion bulb GSTs (GSTa and GSTb as minor GSTs and GSTc, GSTd and GSTe as dominant GSTs) by DEAE-cellulose chromatography. In Western blot analysis with anti-CmGSTF1 antiserum, GSTc and GSTd fractions showed a thick band. A cDNA (AcGSTF1) corresponding to GSTc was immunoscreened with the same antiserum from an onion bulb cDNA library and its bacterial expression product was also subjected to investigation. Among the sulfur compounds, nonphysiological compounds, S-hexyl glutathione (GSH) and S-butyl GSH, showed strong inhibitory effects on 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenezene (CDNB)-conjugating activities of GSTa, GSTb and GSTe. However, physiological sulfur compounds, S-methyl GSH, S-propyl GSH, S-lactoyl GSH and S-ethyl-l-cysteine sulfoxide, had small or almost no inhibitory effects. Therefore, onion sulfur compounds might have the least possibility to be substantial inhibitors of onion GSTs. On the other hand, the activities of GSTc, GSTd and AcGSTF1 were strongly inhibited by flavonoids, quercetin, luteolin, apigenin and kaempferol. Ethylacetate (EtOAc) extract of onion bulb contained quercetin-4′-glucoside as a major inhibitory substance. The strong inhibitory effects of quercetin-4′-glucoside on GSTc and GSTd as well as on AcGSTF1 (50% inhibitory concentration (IC50): 9.5, 7.5 and 11.2 μM, respectively) along with its high concentration (226 μM) in the onion bulb indicates that quercetin-4′-glucoside is a physiological inhibitor of dominant GSTs in the onion bulb.  相似文献

Summary Two distinct segregation patterns are recognized after G X W plastid crosses in Pelargonium. Type I parents produce offspring in which maternal zygotes are frequent, biparental intermediate, and paternal zygotes rare (MZ>BPZ>PZ), as defined by the presence or absence of green or white plastids in the young embryos into which the zygotes develop. Type II parents produce offspring in which maternal and paternal zygotes are frequent with biparental zygotes the least frequent class (MZ>BPZPr 1 Pr 1. Type II plants, which do not breed true, are regarded as heterozygotes — Pr 1 Pr 2. The nuclear gene is symbolized as Pr as it is presumed to control alternative patterns of plastid segregation through an effect on plastid replication.Selfs and intercrosses of heterozygous plants segregate in an unexpected 1:1 ratio and not the expected 3:1 (1:2:1). The alternative homozygote — Pr 2 Pr 2 — could not be detected. Reciprocal crosses between heterozygotes (Pr 1 Pr 2) and homozygotes (Pr 1 Pr 1) give the expected 1:1 ratio when the Pr 2 allele is derived from the male, whereas there is often, but not always, a highly significant deviation from 1:1 when the Pr 2 allele is derived from the female.A simple explanation, which is not wholly satisfactory, is to assume that Pr 2 is a gametophytic lethal on the female side. An alternative, or additional, explanation is that an incompatibility mechanism is involved in which Pr 1 is a self-compatible allele, Pr 2 a self-incompatible allele, and Pr 1-Pr 2 cross-compatible alleles. Successful fertilization is then determined by sporophytic control on the male side and gametophytic control on the female side.  相似文献
