The decomposition of jellyfish after major bloom events results in the release of large amounts of nutrients, which can significantly alter nutrient and oxygen dynamics in the surrounding environment. The response of the ambient bacterial community to decomposing jellyfish biomass was evaluated in two marine ecosystems, the Gulf of Trieste (northern Adriatic Sea) and Big Lake (Mljet Island, southern Adriatic Sea). The major difference between these two ecosystems is that Aurelia sp. medusae occur throughout the year in the oligotrophic Big Lake, whereas in the mesotrophic Gulf of Trieste, they occur only seasonally and often as blooms. Addition of homogenized jellyfish to enclosed bottles containing ambient water from each of these systems triggered considerable changes in the bacterial community dynamics and in the nutrient regime. The high concentrations of protein, dissolved organic phosphorous (DOP), and PO4 3− immediately after homogenate addition stimulated increase in bacterial abundance and production rate, coupled with NH4 + accumulation in both ecosystems. Our preliminary results of the bacterial community structure, as determined with denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis, indicated differences in the bacterial community response between the two ecosystems. Despite divergence in the bacterial community responses to jellyfish homogenate, increased bacterial biomass and growth rates in both distinctive marine systems indicate potentially significant effects of decaying jellyfish blooms on microbial plankton.  相似文献

Abstract

Phytoplankton collected during the fishes death occured off the western middle Adriatic coasts in May 1969. — A taxonomic inventory of some phytoplankton samples taken during a « red bloom » occured off the Italian Adriatic coasts from Cattolica to Cervia is given and discussed. The most common species was Peridinium depressum Bailey. It is also noticeable the presence of many Ceratium species and of Oxytoxum sceptrum (Stein) Schroder, a dinoflagellate rare for the Adriatic sea. The study of hydrological data and the comparison of this list with that of the species collected six days before, 50 miles southward, let us suppose that, for an anomalous circulation of waters with mediterranean characteristic, a stock of tipic pelagic species were transported very close to our coasts. Particular favourable conditions allowed big development of Peridinium depressum and its metabolism was responsible of the Oxygen deficency that was noted and was the cause of the fishes' death.  相似文献

The present study introduces atomic force microscopy (AFM) as a tool for characterization of marine gel network and marine biopolymers self-assembly, not accessible by other techniques. AFM imaging of marine gel samples collected in summers 2003 and 2004 in the northern Adriatic Sea provided insight into molecular organization of gel network and associations between polysaccharide fibrils in the network. Initial stages of biopolymers self-assembly were visualized by AFM in a phytoplankton bloom experiment performed in the same aquatorium. Based on AFM imaging and differential scanning calorimetry, the marine gel is characterized as a thermoreversible physical gel and the dominant mode of gelation as crosslinking of polysaccharide fibrils by hydrogen bonding which results in helical structures and their associations. Direct deposition of whole seawater on freshly cleaved mica followed by rinsing was the procedure that caused the least impact on the original structures of biopolymer assemblies in seawater.  相似文献

Analyses of mitochondrial (mt) DNA and microsatellite variation were carried out to examine the relationships between 10 freshwater populations of three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus along the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. Partial sequences of the mtDNA control region and cytochrome b gene, in addition to 15 microsatellite loci, were used to analyse populations from four isolated river catchments. Results uncovered an Adriatic lineage that was clearly divergent from the European lineage, and confirmed that the most divergent and ancient populations are located within the Adriatic lineage as compared with other European populations. Two northern Adriatic populations formed independent clades within the European mitochondrial lineage, suggesting different colonization histories of the different Adriatic populations. Nuclear marker analyses also indicated deep divergence between Adriatic and European populations, albeit with some discordance between the mtDNA phylogeny of the northern Adriatic populations, further highlighting the strong differentiation among the Adriatic populations. The southern populations within the Adriatic lineage were further organized into distinct clades corresponding to respective river catchments and sub-clades corresponding to river tributaries, reflecting a high degree of population structuring within a small geographic region, concurrent with suggestions of existence of several microrefugia within the Balkan Peninsula. The highly divergent clades and haplotypes unique to the southern Adriatic populations further suggest, in accordance with an earlier, more limited survey, that southern Adriatic populations represent an important reservoir for ancient genetic diversity of G. aculeatus.  相似文献

Most stratified sulfidic holomictic lakes become oxygenated after annual turnover. In contrast, Lake Rogoznica, on the eastern Adriatic coast, has been observed to undergo a period of water column anoxia after water layer mixing and establishment of holomictic conditions. Although Lake Rogoznica''s chemistry and hydrography have been studied extensively, it is unclear how the microbial communities typically inhabiting the oxic epilimnion and a sulfidic hypolimnion respond to such a drastic shift in redox conditions. We investigated the impact of anoxic holomixis on microbial diversity and microbially mediated sulfur cycling in Lake Rogoznica with an array of culture-independent microbiological methods. Our data suggest a tight coupling between the lake''s chemistry and occurring microorganisms. During stratification, anoxygenic phototrophic sulfur bacteria were dominant at the chemocline and in the hypolimnion. After an anoxic mixing event, the anoxygenic phototrophic sulfur bacteria entirely disappeared, and the homogeneous, anoxic water column was dominated by a bloom of gammaproteobacterial sulfur oxidizers related to the GSO/SUP05 clade. This study is the first report of a community shift from phototrophic to chemotrophic sulfide oxidizers as a response to anoxic holomictic conditions in a seasonally stratified seawater lake.  相似文献

On 7 November and 15 December 2006, two specimens of the Lessepsian migrant Fistularia commersonni were caught in trammel nets off the coastal waters of Tricase Porto (southwestern Adriatic, Italy) and Sveti Andrija (southeastern Adriatic, Croatia), respectively. These represent the first records of this species in the Adriatic Sea.  相似文献

In the north Adriatic basin, a morphologically and genetically distinct lineage of grayling is found, designated as the Adriatic grayling. In Slovenia, the Adriatic grayling is restricted to the Soca river system, where it is critically endangered. The most pertinent threat is stocking with non-native, highly divergent Sava (Danubian) drainage stock, and this activity has been going on for more than four decades. The present study was designed to characterise the genetic structure of the Adriatic grayling in Slovenia, with particular emphasis on estimating the degree of introgression with non-indigenous stocked grayling. We analysed polymorphism at 154 microsatellite loci in samples representing grayling from the Adriatic and Danubian drainage stock. A relatively high number (12) of alleles, diagnostic for the Adriatic grayling, were identified. However, a correspondence analysis based on individual multilocus genotypes also revealed that there is no distinctive Adriatic group but rather a dispersed multitude of individuals that cannot be unambiguously distinguished from the more homogenous Danubian population. A Bayesian analysis of individual admixture coefficients confirmed this pattern and revealed extensive introgression between the Adriatic grayling and stocked grayling of Danubian origin. Average individual admixture coefficients showed that only between 50 and 60% of the original gene pools remained, and only few non-introgressed indigenous individuals could be identified. Microsatellite-based individual admixture analysis appear to be an important tool for identifying remaining non-introgressed indigenous individuals that could be used for restoring the original populations.  相似文献

The northern part of the peri-Adriatic river system is inhabited by a native grayling population. In comparison with the Danubian population most of the Adriatic population is regarded as morphologically distinct and therefore recognized as racially differentiated. DNA sequence analysis of the 394-bp fragment of the mtDNA control region and 363-bp fragment of the cytochrome b gene region from grayling specimens of the Adriatic, Danubian and Atlantic river systems revealed nine composite mtDNA haplotypes. The genetic divergence of the Adriatic and the Danubian-Atlantic haplotypes ranged from 2.52 to 3.10% and from 3.38 to 3.92% in the cytochrome b gene and control region, respectively. On the basis of sequence data an attempt was made to elucidate the phylogeography of the Adriatic population. The molecular data indicate an ancient monophyletic origin and also confirm its distinct position within the Thymallus thymallus species, in spite of the fact that stocking with the Danubian type occurred in the Adriatic river system. Therefore the Adriatic population deserves special attention. As a first step in its preservation, its formal distinction by using the name Adriatic grayling is proposed.  相似文献

Diatoms are dominant photosynthetic organisms in the world's oceans and are considered essential in the transfer of energy to higher trophic levels. However, these unicellular organisms produce secondary metabolites deriving from the oxidation of fatty acids, collectively termed oxylipins, with negative effects on predators, such as copepods, that feed on them (e.g. reduction in survival, egg production and hatching success) and, indirectly, on higher trophic levels. Here, a multidisciplinary study (oxylipin measurements, copepod fitness, gene expression analyses, chlorophyll distribution, phytoplankton composition, physico-chemical characteristics) was carried out at the end of the spring diatom bloom in April 2011 in the Northern Adriatic Sea (Mediterranean Sea) in order to deeply investigate copepod–diatom interactions, chemical communication and response pathways. The results show that the transect with the lowest phytoplankton abundance had the lowest copepod egg production and hatching success, but the highest oxylipin concentrations. In addition, copepods in both the analyzed transects showed increased expression levels of key stress-related genes (e.g. heat-shock proteins, catalase, glutathione S-transferase, aldehyde dehydrogenase) compared to control laboratory conditions where copepods were fed with the dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum which does not produce any oxylipins. New oxylipins that have never been reported before for microalgae are described for the first time, giving new insights into the complex nature of plant–animal signaling and communication pathways at sea. This is also the first study providing insights on the copepod response during a diatom bloom at the molecular level.  相似文献

The fluctuations of selected types of micro-organisms were considered in relation to the vernal phytoplankton bloom, consisting mainly of diatoms, in the Tvärminne area in March-June 1978. Water samples were taken almost daily from the surface layer during the bloom, which comprised two biomass (chlorophyll a) peaks.
Viable bacteria corresponded closely with the course of the bloom, the bacterial maxima occurring some days after the phytoplankton maximum. The bacteria apparently multiplied by mainly utilizing organic compounds released from decaying phytoplankton cells.
Proteolytic bacteria had their maximum below the ice in the low-salinity surface layer, but showed a positive correlation with the bloom. They evidently utilized proteins supplied by domestic effluents as well as those released from phytoplankton cells. Yeasts showed no distinct connection with the bloom; they were probably unable to compete for nutrients with bacteria. The low numbers of yeasts during the bloom can mainly be ascribed to the mixing occurring after the break-up of the ice, which decreased the yeasts of terrestrial origin in the surface layer.  相似文献

Population histories depend on the interplay between exogeneous and endogeneous factors. In marine species, phylogeographic and demographic patterns are often shaped by sea level fluctuations, water currents and dispersal ability. Using mitochondrial control region sequences (n = 120), we infer phylogeographic structure and historic population size changes of a common littoral fish species, the black‐faced blenny Tripterygion delaisi (Perciformes, Blennioidei, Tripterygiidae) from the north‐eastern Adriatic Sea. We find that Adriatic T. delaisi are differentiated from conspecific populations in the remaining Mediterranean, but display little phylogeographic structure within the Adriatic basin. The pattern is consistent with passive dispersal of planktonic larvae along cyclonic currents within the Adriatic Sea, but limited active dispersal of adults. Demographic reconstructions are consistent with recent population expansion, probably triggered by rising sea levels after the last glacial maximum (LGM). Placing the onset of population growth between the LGM and the warming of surface waters (18 000–13 000 years BP) and employing a novel expansion dating approach, we inferred a substitution rate of 2.61–3.61% per site per MY. Our study is one of only few existing investigations of the genetic structure of animals within the Adriatic basin and is the first to provide an estimate for mitochondrial control region substitution rates in blennioid fishes.  相似文献

Zooplankton was sampled during 39 cruises, from 1990 to 1993, at four fixed stations in the open northern Adriatic. Hydrographic factors were important in determining the abundance of the smallest and largest components of the northern Adriatic food chain during this period. Nauplii—especially those of the smallest size fractions—were the major mediators of material transfer between primary producers and higher trophic levels. There was a significant difference in the vertical distribution of nauplii size fractions between the eastern and western parts of the northern Adriatic, but not in their population density. According to multiple correlation analyses, the abundance of naupliar size fractions in the western area correlated strongly with temperature and with certain biological factors. This study confirms the important influence of the Po River and of mid-Adriatic waters on the planktonic ecosystem of the northern Adriatic. Electronic Publication  相似文献

The Dutch coastal zone of the North Sea is characterized byhigh nutrient inputs and low water column irradiance due tohigh concentrations of suspended matter. The vernal phytoplanktonblooms are dominated by diatoms and the flagellate Phaeocystis(Haptophyta). Two hypotheses that predict the timing of thePhaeocystzs bloom were tested with field data collected in 1992.The first one, stating that the Phaeocystis bloom starts whensilicon has been depleted by a preceding diatom bloom, couldnot be bracketed with observations. The second hypothesis, predictingthat Phaeocysus blooms under nitrogen- and phosphorus-repleteconditions after a daily irradiance threshold has been passedcould be supported by field observations. Furthermore, it isshown that the Dutch coastal zone is not continuously homogeneouslymixed. It is argued that this is an important factor in thelife cycle of Phaeocystis and in foam formation on nearby shores.Grazing by the ciliate Strombidium sulcatum and heterotrophicgymnodinoid flagellates accounted for 92% of Phaeocystis cellloss after the bloom.  相似文献

This study focuses on genetic variation of brown trout Salmo trutta populations of the Adriatic and Danubian drainages in Switzerland. The allozyme and other protein loci data show a major replacement of native stocks from the Adriatic drainages by introduced hatchery trout of Atlantic basin origin. In most samples, diagnostic alleles for the Adriatic form of Salmo trutta f. fario and for the marbled trout Salmo trutta marmoratus are found at very low frequencies (f<0.15). Taking into account previous genetic studies on brown trout of this basin, the Danubian samples are not heavily contaminated with foreign alleles. The results are consistent with records of local stocking activities which account in part for the high introgression rates of Atlantic alleles into local populations of the Adriatic drainages. In addition, introgression is enhanced by a decrease of natural reproduction which is caused by a deterioration of trout habitats through human activities. Furthermore, a third mechanism is proposed that may contribute to the high introgression rates observed: if Atlantic trout are introduced, the reproductive barriers between the two native forms, marbled trout and Adriatic fario respectively, break down. Atlantic trout apparently hybridize with both native forms and generate gene flow between them. In some parts of Adriatic drainages in Switzerland, the patterns of introgression and hybridization are further complicated by introduction of trout from the Danubian system. Alleles of the marbled trout are also found in the samples of the Danubian drainage system. These are due to stocking activities across the watershed.  相似文献

1. The abundance of cysts of the bloom‐forming dinoflagellate Peridinium gatunense in the sediments of Lake Kinneret and the effects of environmental conditions on encystment were studied in relation to bloom dynamics. Peak cyst formation coincided with the highest growth rate of the population, prior to bloom peak. 2. Peridinium cysts were counted in water and sediment corer samples from 2000 to 2003 and in archived sediment trap samples collected during 1993–94. The cyst data were examined in relation to ambient temperature and nutrient records, and revealed no direct correlation. 3. In laboratory encystment experiments with Peridinium cells collected from the lake, 0.2–3% of the vegetative cells encysted. Temperature, light and cell density had no significant effect on the percentage of encystment. 4. Cysts were always present in the lake sediments but their abundance in ‘non Peridinium’ years was much lower than after a massive bloom. Vegetative cells were always present in the water column after the collapse of the annual dinoflagellate bloom, potentially serving as the inoculum for the next bloom. We propose that the hardy cysts serve as an emergency ‘gene bank’ to initiate population build up following catastrophic die outs.  相似文献

We explore the historical demography of the Adriatic lineage of brown trout and more explicitly the colonization and phylogenetic placement of Ohrid trout, based on variation at 12 microsatellite loci and the mtDNA control region. All Adriatic basin haplotypes reside in derived positions in a network that represents the entire lineage. The central presumably most ancestral haplotype in this network is restricted to the Iberian Peninsula, where it is very common, supporting a Western Mediterranean origin for the lineage. The expansion statistic R2, Bayesian based estimates of demographic parameters, and star-like genealogies support expansions on several geographic scales, whereas application of pairwise mismatch analysis was somewhat ambiguous. The estimated time since expansion (155,000 years ago) for the Adriatic lineage was supported by a narrow confidence interval compared to previous studies. Based on microsatellite and mtDNA sequence variation, the endemic Ohrid trout represents a monophyletic lineage isolated from other Adriatic basin populations, but nonetheless most likely evolving from within the Adriatic lineage of brown trout. Our results do not support the existence of population structuring within Lake Ohrid, even though samples included two putative intra-lacustrine forms. In the interests of protecting the unique biodiversity of this ancient ecosystem, we recommend retaining the taxonomic epithet Salmo letnica for the endemic Ohrid trout.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of chlorophyll a (Chla), paniculateorganic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON), net zoopiankton ash-freedry weight (AFDW), dry weight (DW) and carbon and nitrogen content,in parallel with primary production, was studied during a jointYugoslav cruise in January 1980. The results were interpretedin relation to hydrographic properties, with special emphasison the relationship between pelagic parameters. Spatial distributionof POC, PON and net zoopiankton AFDW and C and N contents showedsimilarities over the major part of the Adriatic, while Chlaand POC showed dissimilarities since higher Chla values wererestricted to the northwestern part of the Adriatic, separatedfrom the rest of the Adriatic by a pronounced thermal frontextending south of the Istrian peninsula. High POC was foundin the centre of the south Adriatic gyre and in the Jabuka Pit,the latter filled with cold water originating from the arealocated south of the thermal front. The areas of high POC werecharacterized by a higher POC recycling time than in other Adriaticregions. High Chla, POC, PON and net zooplankton AFDW and Cand N contents in parallel with increased primary productionwere found in the southwestern part of the Adriatic off Puglia(Italy) affected by a continuous terrigenous supply of nutrients. The observed spatial distribution pattern of pelagic organicmatter suggests that this distribution is mostly influencedby hydrographic conditions and that the assumption of permanentproductivity zones in the Adriatic is not applicable to thewinter situation.  相似文献
