Summary Competitive release among desert rodents on sand dunes of differing species richness was examined in the Great Basin and Mohave Deserts, USA. Expansions in microhabitat use were exhibited by the kangaroo rats Dipodomys ordii and D. merriami (granivorous heteromyid rodents, weighing 49 and 42 g, respectively) as the number of coexisting heteromyid species decreased geographically. Perognathus longimembris, the only common small heteromyid species (7 g) exhibited no competitive release. This may be due either to the absence of competitive interactions that affect the use of space by P. longimembris or to an unacceptable increase in risk of predation that precludes the use of more open microhabitats even in the absence of kangaroo rats. The breadth of microhabitat use of an omnivorous cricetid, Peromyscus maniculatus, decreased as the density of Perognathus longimembris increased, and increased as the density of conspecifics increased. The evidence for competitive release in Dipodomys and not in Perognathus is consistent with the hypothesis that species in the same guild and of similar size compete more intensely than species of disparate size.  相似文献

Summary The water balance of three different sized coexisting species of heteromyid rodents (Dipodomys merriami ca. 39 g;Perognathus fallax ca. 23 g;Perognathus longimembris ca. 9 g) was assessed while consuming two different diets (either wheat or hulled sunflower) at ambient temperatures of 15–30°C. The metabolism of wheat as the sole food source was calculated to provide a greater metabolic water production (MWP) than the consumption of sunflower seed because of their different composition. The state of water balance was assessed by measuring urine concentrations and body weight maintenance on each diet at each temperature. Both measures showed that (i) all species were able to maintain a more positive water on the higher MWP seed, (ii) for all species there was an ambient temperature above which water balance could no longer be maintained, (iii) that this temperature was higher with the higher MWP food source and (iv) water regulatory efficiency was negatively correlated with body mass.Dipodomys showed a reduced digestive efficiency compared toPerognathus. When presented with both seedsDipodomys showed no preference for either seed irrespective of the state of water balance whilst thePerognathus species showed a tendency for an increased preference for the high MWP food source at the higher ambient temperatures. The ecological implications of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Among some species of Sonoran Desert rodents microhabitat differences are density dependent. I studied the differences in microhabitat use among four species of heteromyid rodents (Dipodomys merriami, Perognathus amplus, P. baileyi, and P. penicillatus) at low and at high population densities. Microhabitats are defined by the abundance and size distribution of desert shrubs. During a period of low population density the rodent species showed substantial microhabitat differentiation. Following a large increase in pocket mouse (Perognathus spp.) numbers differences in microhabitat use between species disappeared. The lack of microhabitat differentiation at high density is due to microhabitat shifts rather than an expansion in the number of microhabitats used. The shifts lead to increased similarity among species in microhabitat use. Microhabitat overlap is not constant but it is highly variable and sensitive to changes in rodent abundance.  相似文献

The effects of owl predation on the foraging behavior of heteromyid rodents   总被引:14,自引:0,他引:14
Summary Researchers have documented microhabitat partitioning among the heteromyid rodents of the deserts of North America that may result from microhabitat specific predation rates; large/bipedal species predominate in the open/risky microhabitat and small/quadrupedal species predominate in the bush/safer microhabitat. Here, we provide direct experimental evidence on the role of predatory risk in affecting the foraging behavior of three species of heteromyid rodents: Arizona pocket mouse (Perognathus amplus; small/quadrupedal), Bailey's pocket mouse (P. baileyi; large/quadrupedal), and Merriam's kangaroo rat (Dipodomys merriami; large/bipedal). Both kangaroo rats and pocket mice are behaviorally flexible and able to adjust their foraging behavior to nightly changes in predatory risk. Under low levels of perceived predatory risk the kangaroo rat foraged relatively more in the open microhabitat than the two pocket mouse species. In response to the presence of barn owls, however, all three species shifted their habitat use towards the bush microhabitat. In response to direct measures of predatory risk, i.e. the actual presence of owls, all three species reduced foraging and left resource patches at higher giving up densities of seeds. In response to indirect indicators of predatory risk, i.e. illumination, there was a tendency for all three species to reduce foraging. The differences in morphology between pocket mice and kangaroo rats do appear to influence their behavioral responses to predatory risk.  相似文献

In squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus) the position of submandibular glands in the neck, on either side of the trachea, more closely resembles that of rodents than that of other primates. The glands exhibit seromucous acini and mucous tubules with seromucous demilunes. Electron microscopy shows basal cytoplasmic folds and well-developed intercellular tissue spaces and canaliculi only in relation to seromucous cells. Greatly dilated cisternae of the granular endoplasmic reticulum and prominent Golgi membranes are characteristic of the mucous cells. The secretory granules of seromucous and mucous cells are morphologically distinct and indicate chemically different products for the two cell types. Histochemically, the seromucous cell shows the presence of acid mucosubstance as indicated by the PAS and Alcian blue techniques. Preliminary studies showed no appreciable quantity of amylase in submandibular glands. The intercalated duct cell is juxtaposed with the acinar cell or mucous tubule cell. Short luminal microvilli, prominent Golgi complexes and scant apical granules are notable features of intercalated duct cells. Four cell types compose the striated ducts, viz., granular light cells, agranular dark cells, vesiculated dark cells, and basal cells. Peripheral nerves are found in five different locations: in the connective tissue (interstitial), between adjacent myoepithelial and mucous-secreting cells, in the intercellular space between adjacent secretory cells, and between basal plications of striated ducts and between adjacent myoepithelial and intercalated duct cells.  相似文献

Summary An experiment was conducted to determine the microhabitat preferences of two heteromyid rodents, Dipodomys ordi and Perognathus flavus. This experiment used marked seeds and the atomic absorption spectrophotometer in order to study the environment as a mosiac of microhabitats. The results of our analysis indicate that these two heteromyids are microhabitat selectors. The preferences of the rodents are D. ordi: grass habitat 0.0%, near grass habitat 22.5%, open habitat 77.4% and P. flavus: grass habitat 46.2%, near grass habitat 32.2%, open habitat 21.4%. The overlap between the two species is only 0.43.  相似文献

Summary A comparative study of seasonal food hoarding activity and tactile discriminatory ability in four species of heteromyid rodents (Dipodomys panamintinus, D. merriami, Perognathus longimembris, and P. formosus) was conducted in laboratory test arenas. Animals were tested individually to determine their treatment of seed (white millet) and seed mimics (glass beads and gravel) offered as food. In general, all animals showed low levels of millet hoarding activity during winter months with higher levels in fall and spring. Observations revealed that all species manipulated (with the forepaws) each potential food item prior to eating, pouching, or rejecting it. These tactile cues appear to surpass visual and olfactory cues as critical factors in distinguishing between food and food mimics. Pocket mice (Perognathus) showed high levels of tactile discriminatory ability which may serve as the mechanism by which they achieve high foraging efficiency in nature when filter-feeding for widely dispersed seed resources. Kangaroo rats (Dipodomys), on the other hand, are less adept at distinguishing between food and very similar non-food items. The fact that, in nature, kangaroo rats depend heavily on clumped food resources may obviate the need for highly efficient tactile discriminatory abilities.  相似文献

Analyses of the histology, histochemistry, and ultrastructre of the Harderian gland of Coluber viridiflavus prove the gland to be compound acinar and to produce a seromucous secretion. Acinar cells (type I) contain secretory granules that are composite, consisting ultrastructurally of three distinct parts that are sharply separated. They are similar to the “special secretory granules” described in the cells of the Harderian gland of the lizard Podarcis s. sicula. Some acini of the most anterior and posterior parts of the gland are mucous. Acinar cells (type II) of this type contain secretory granules that are Alcian blue/PAS positve. At the ultrastructural level, they appear homogeneous and of low density, characteristic of mucous secretions. These mucus-secreting anterior and posterior parts of the Harderian gland may by considered as regions of intial differentiation of the anterior and posterior lacrimal galnds.  相似文献

The pharaoh cuttlefish, Sepia pharaonis, is an important cephalopod fishery species in southeastern Asia, with understudied reproductive physiology. The present study aimed to investigate the cellular characteristics of epithelial cells found in the nidamental glands (NGs) and accessory NGs (ANGs), as well as the structural connections between these two glands in mature female S. pharaonis. A histological analysis revealed two types of epithelial cells in NGs: Alcian blue‐positive, PAS‐negative mucosubstance‐secreting cells and eosinophilic, PAS‐positive granule‐secreting cells. Using transmission electron microscopy, three types of epithelial cells were identified: cells with electron‐dense granules, cells with electron‐lucent granules, and cells with both cilia and microvilli in the apex. Mature ANGs contain an abundance of tubular units composed of epithelial cells resting on a thin layer of basal lamina. Innervated muscle cells are tightly adhered to the basal lamina. In addition, we observed epithelial canalization of ANG tubules penetrating through the connective tissue linking NGs and the walls of the tubules in ANGs, which allows the contents of the ANG tubules to be transported to the NGs. Our results suggest that ANGs participate in the encapsulation of the ova via the same pathway as NGs, which provides an important basis for future studies on the mechanism of protection provided by NGs and ANGs during embryonic development in S. pharaonis.  相似文献

Summary The foraging strategies of four naturally co-existing heteromyid rodent species were investigated: Dipodomys deserti (100 g), D. merriami (38 g), Microdipodops pallidus (13 g), and Perognathus longimembris (7 g). In 208 over-night laboratory foraging trials animals were provided with millet seed distributed in clumped and scattered patterns. Net removal of seeds from the foraging arena and amounts of seeds in cheek pouches and in caches were determined. When alone in an areana none of these species specialized extensively on either clumped or scattered seeds, although each tended to take more clumped than scattered seeds. When placed together with other individuals, animals once again tended to cache more clumped than scattered seeds in all but one paired combination of species: P. longimembris cached more scattered than clumped seeds when opposed by D. deserti. This suggests that the smaller species obtained a less preferred distribution of seeds in the face of competition. The two smaller species showed a great reduction in general foraging success in the presence of either of the two larger species. In general, a species cached less seeds when faced by larger opponent species.  相似文献

Summary Seed distribution (clump size) selection has been proposed as a possible mechanism of resource subdivision for competing heteromyid rodent species. To test this hypothesis, field experiments were conducted over two years during both richer and sparser seasons of the year. None of the predictions derived from the hypothesis were supported by our results. Though some selectivity was displayed by both Dipodomys spectabilis and D. merriami, the patterns of selectivity did not match the expected patterns. Our results further indicate that clump selection may be influenced by variables other than the density of seeds within a clump. These results have led us to conclude that clump size selection is unlikely to play a role in the coexistence of different species of the genus Dipodomys.  相似文献

Summary Fluctuations in rainfall and size of desert rodent and plant populations for each of five consecutive years were documented on 68 sites in Mojave, Great Basin, and transition desert communities of central-southern Nevada. Post-reproduction rodent densities in the summer usually followed the seasonal patterns of winter annual success the previous spring, in turn directly related to the success of germination the preceding autumn. In the Dipodomys merriami environment, at the lower elevations with relatively low rainfall and high temperatures of the Mojave Desert, D. merriami and D. deserti numbers (indicating success or failure of reproduction) closely followed the seasonal and site patterns of winter annual success. In the Dipodomys microps environment, at the middle and higher elevations with the relatively high rainfall and lower temperatures of the transition and Great Basin deserts, D. microps numbers followed winter annual success patterns in years of high or low rainfall in the months preceding reproduction, but there was reproduction in years of intermediate rainfall whether or not there were winter annuals in the environment. Reproductive patterns of D. merriami in the D. microps environment followed those of D. microps. Perognathus longimembris, the ubiquitous heteromyid of the region, also exhibited both reproductive patterns, depending on whether it was in the D. merriami or the D. microps environment. The Mojave Desert P. formosus, edaphically restricted in the region, followed the patterns of the D. merriami environment and its numbers were highly correlated with winter annual success.Herbaceous perennials, capable of large germinations of plants behaving as biennials or winter annuals, are shown to have large effects on D. merriami numbers. Size of populations of Eurasian annual species of Bromus and Salsola were not correlatable with rodent reproduction patterns. From all patterns in all environments, it is inferred that environmental conditions affecting water balance in the rodents play the key role in initiation of reproduction. Environmental moisture levels during the winter season are usually under the control of rainfall of late autumn-early winter, coincidentally the period of greatest predictability of heavy rains. The herbaceous plants, present in the winter months most years, are available sources of water (and vitamins) at the time of initiation of reproductive activity. For D. microps, identified with the mesic environments of the region, the herbaceous plants may or may not be necessary sources of water for reproduction, depending on the seasonal rainfall regime. For D. merriami, herbaceous plants appear to serve as a water reservoir required for reproduction in its usual environments. The same relationships evidently obtain for the other heteromyids, and the cricetids as a group.Studies conducted under U.S. Atomic Energy Commission Contracts AT(04-1) Gen-12 and AT(11-1) 2307, and at the Nevada Test Site as part of CETO Project 61.5.4  相似文献

Rodents of the family Heteromyidae are proficient gatherers and hoarders of seeds. A major component of their adaptive specialization for harvesting and transporting seeds is their spacious, fur-lined cheek pouches. Precise measurements of cheek pouch capacities are essential if ecologists are to understand the foraging ecology, possible constraints on locomotion patterns, and competitive relationships of heteromyid rodents. To measure the size of these cheek pouches and the rate at which animals load seeds into their pouches during seed harvest, we attracted 56 individuals representing ten species of heteromyid rodents to bait stations in the field and allowed them to fill their cheek pouches with seeds several times while we observed and timed the events with the aid of night-vision equipment. The largest load taken by each individual was used as an estimate of its cheek pouch capacity. At the end of observations, each subject was captured and its mass and other data gathered. The allometric relationship between cheek pouch capacity and body mass for ten species of heteromyids was significant [pouch capacity (ml) = 0.148 body mass (g)0.992, r 2=0.91, P<0.0001]. The regression coefficient is ≈1.0, which indicates that the volume of the cheek pouches scales in direct proportion to body size. When the data were subdivided into quadrupeds (Perognathus and Chaetodipus) and bipeds (Dipodomys) (n=5 for each), the relationships between pouch capacity and body mass were significant, but the two regressions were not significantly different from each other. When all loads (full and partial) were considered, subjects filled their cheek pouches an average of 93 ± 10% of pouch capacity (n=185). Cheek pouch capacities from published studies of artificially filled pouches of heteromyids in the laboratory averaged about 40% below the field measurements obtained here. The allometric relationship between mean loading rate and body mass was also significant [seeds/s=1.067 bodymass (g)0.830, r 2=0.85,P=0.0011), but when quadrupeds and bipeds were considered separately, the relationships were not significant. Seed densities and bulk densities were used to calculate packing coefficients for seed species, which, when used in conjunction with the allometric relationship between cheek pouch capacity and body size, can be used to estimate the maximum load carried by a heteromyid. Except for the very largest kangaroo rat species, a full pouch load of Indian ricegrass seeds represents less than the daily energy requirements of an active heteromyid. Abstract. The ribbon‐shaped salivary glands in Bulla striata were studied with light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Secretion is produced in tubules formed by two types of secretory cells, namely granular mucocytes and vacuolated cells, intercalated with ciliated cells. A central longitudinal duct lined by the same cell types collects the secretion and conducts it to the buccal cavity. In granular mucocytes, the nucleus is usually central and the secretory vesicles contain oval‐shaped granular masses attached to the vesicle membrane. Glycogen granules can be very abundant, filling the space around the secretory vesicles. These cells are strongly stained by PAS reaction for polysaccharides. Their secretory vesicles are also stained by Alcian blue, revealing acidic mucopolysaccharides, and the tetrazonium reaction detects proteins in minute spots at the edge of the vesicles, corresponding to the granular masses observed in TEM. Colloidal iron staining for acidic mucopolysaccharides in TEM reveals iron particles in the electron‐lucent region of the vesicles, while the granular masses are free of particles. In vacuolated cells, which are thinner and less abundant than the granular mucocytes, the nucleus is basal and the cytoplasm contains large electron‐lucent vesicles. These vesicles are very weakly colored by light microscopy techniques, but colloidal iron particles could be observed within them. The golf tee‐shaped ciliated cells contain some electron‐dense lysosomes in the apical region. In these cells, the elongated nucleus is subapically located, and bundles of microfibrils are common in the slender cytoplasmic stalk that reaches the basal lamina. The morphological, histochemical, and cytochemical data showed some similarities between salivary glands in B. striata and Aplysia depilans. These similarities could reflect the phylogenetic relationship between cephalaspidean and anaspidean opisthobranchs or result from a convergent adaptation to an identical herbivorous diet.  相似文献

Cochleae (125) from 26 species of the rodent family Heteromyidae (genera Dipodomys. Microdipodops, Perognathus, and Liomys) were compared. In Perognathus and Liomys the scala tympani in the apical portion is extremely narrow with a correspondingly minute helicotrema. In Liomys there is no bone separating scala tympani from spiral ganglion in the upper second and entire third turn. In all species studied the zona pectinata of the basilar membrane is enlarged, with a hyaline mass between upper and lower basilar membrane fibers. This zona pectinata hypertrophy is least at the base of the cochlea and greatest in the upper second turn, decreasing again toward the apex. Basilar membrane width increases rapidly in the first turn and then changes only slightly. Except for Liomys, all the heteromyids studied have hypertrophied Hensen's cells with long apical processes supporting and forming an elevated reticular lamina. These Hensen's cells reach their maximum size in the upper second and lower third turns; throughout they rest on inner Claudius' cells rather than the basilar membrane. Relative to naso-occipital length the cochlear specializations are greatest in Microdipodops and least in Liomys just as is the case for middle ear modifications. The morphological data are consistent with the concept that standing wave phenomena may be important in heteromyid cochlear biomechanics. Single unit data of other workers are also consistent with this interpretation. Like middle ear morphology, inner ear morphology appears adapted to low-frequency sensitivity–especially in Dipodomys and Microdipodops.  相似文献

Summary To identify the renal cortical tubular segments involved in tubulo-interstitial disease in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded percutaneous kidney biopsies, we developed multiple immunolabeling protocols using segment-specific tubular markers. The present study of biopsies from patients with minimal change or thin basement membrane nephropathy provides a baseline for interpretation of histopathology. Proximal tubules were stained either by the PAS reaction or by the biotinylated Phaseolus vulgaris erythroagglutinin (PHA-E)-streptavidin-gold-silver system (brush borders black). The anti-Tamm-Horsfall (THP) antibody-immunoperoxidase (aminoethylcarbazole, AEC-IPO), and anti-epidermal cytokeratins (ECK) antibodies-immunoalkaline-Fast Blue BB methods marked the distal straight tubules and the cortical collecting system red-brown and blue, respectively. When these immunolabelings were combined, the coapplication of AEC-PO-labeled peanut agglutinin (PNA) or anti-epithelial membrane antigen antibody-AEC-IPO technique (both are markers for distal nephron) visualized the apical membranes of distal convoluted tubules. In the protocol PHA-E + PNA + THP + ECK, the tubular basement membranes were outlined by the anti-laminin antibody-AEC-IPO staining, carried out simultaneously. The protocol PNA + THP + ECK + PAS was found to be a quite appropriate multiple immunolabeling method for the tubules, and is recommended for use as a tool in the study of tubulo-interstitial diseases.Abbreviations PAS periodic acid-Schiff reaction - PHAE Phaseolus vulgaris erythroagglutinin - PNA Peanut agglutinin - EMA epithelial membrane antigen - THP Tamm-Horsfall glycoprotein - ECK epidermal cytokeratins - PO peroxidase - Biot-PHA-E biotinylated PHA-E - APAAP complexes of alkaline phosphatase and mouse monoclonal anti-alkaline phosphatase - SWARI swine anti-rabbit immunoglobulins - FCS fetal calf serum - TBS Tris-buffered saline - AEC aminoethylcarbazole - DAB diaminobenzidine - FBBB Fast Blue BB - IA immunoalkaline - GL glomerulus - PT proximal tubule - DST distal straight tubule - DCT distal convoluted tubule - CCS cortical collecting system - CT connecting tubule - CD collecting duct  相似文献

Stable carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen isotopes have been used to infer aspects of species ecology and environment in both modern ecosystems and the fossil record. Compared to large mammals, stable isotopic studies of small‐mammal ecology are limited; however, high species and ecological diversity within small mammals presents several advantages for quantifying resource use and organism–environment interactions using stable isotopes over various spatial and temporal scales. We analyzed the isotopic composition of hair from two heteromyid rodent species, Dipodomys ordii and Perognathus parvus, from localities across western North America in order to characterize dietary variation in relation to vegetation and climatic gradients. Significant correlations between the carbon isotopic composition (δ13C) of these species and several climatic variables imply that seasonal temperature and precipitation control the composition and distribution of dietary resources (grass seeds). Our results also suggest a moisture influence on the nitrogen isotopic composition (δ15N) of heteromyid diets. Population‐ and species‐level variation in δ13C and δ15N values record fine‐scale habitat heterogeneity and significant differences in resource use between species. Using classification and regression‐tree techniques, we modeled the geographic variation in heteromyid δ13Cdiet values based on 10 climatic variables and generated an isotope landscape model (‘isoscape’). The isoscape predictions for δ13Cdiet differ from expectations based on observed C4 distributions and instead indicate that D. ordii and P. parvus record seasonally abundant grass resources, with additional model deviations potentially attributed to geographic variation in dietary selection. The oxygen and hydrogen isotopic composition of D. ordii is enriched relative to local meteoric water and suggests that individuals rely on highly evaporated water sources, such as seed moisture. Based on the climatic influences on vegetation and diet documented in this study, the isotopic composition of small mammals has high potential for recording ecological responses to environmental changes over short and long time scales.  相似文献

Rodents were live-trapped in three environments (desert, intermediate and coastal) in Southern California, USA, chosen because of the taxonomic overlap of species. Upon capture, blood samples were taken and plasma thyroxine concentrations were measured. Four species (Dipodomys merriami, Perognathus fallax, Peromyscus eremicus and Peromyscus californicus) were returned to the laboratory for measurement of minimal and summit rates of metabolism. Heteromyid rodents had significantly lower plasma thyroxine concentrations (14-44 nmol l-1) than cricetid rodents (18-93 nmol l-1). Although there was significant habitat difference in plasma thyroxine levels, this influence was not constant between heteromyid and cricetid rodents. In most species, the desert individuals had the lowest plasma thyroxine concentration. Minimal metabolic rates were lower than expected in all four species, as well as in the tropical heteromyid Liomys salvini and summit metabolic rates were similarly reduced in all species. Upon capture there was considerable variation in plasma thyroxine concentration of different species (23-93 nmol l-1). However, following 10 weeks in captivity, the range and variability of plasma thyroxine levels in these species was considerably reduced (32-64 nmol l-1).  相似文献

The venom glands of several species of elapid snakes are described. The main venom gland consists of many tubules which usually contain large amounts of secretion product. The accessory gland surrounds the entire venom duct and is usually composed of uniform mucous epithelium. The epithelium lining the tubules of the accessory gland of Naja naja is composed of two distinct types of cells. Histochemical tests indicate that the main venom gland reacts with mercury bromphenol blue and PAS but not with alcian blue. The accessory gland reacts with PAS and alcian blue, and not with mercury bromphenol blue. Treatment of sections with sialidase demonstrates the presence of a sialomucin in the accessory gland. Stimulation of the muscles associated with the venom gland offers an indication of the venom expulsion mechanism of Bungarus caeruleus. A comparison of the venom apparatus of elapid and viperid snakes emphasizes marked differences in the internal anatomy of the venom glands, muscles associated with the gland, and arrangement of glandular components. The morphological differences and dissimilar venom expulsion mechanisms support the recent view of the polyphyletic origin of venomous snakes.  相似文献
