Clarias gariepinus is a threatened highly prized species used for some elite ceremonies by the local communities. Artisanal fishers take advantage of this species annual breeding migration from the lower Cross River to the floodplain lakes in Mid-Cross River during the rainy season, and some migrant stocks are not able to spawn. Since there is a lack of information on this species population dynamics in the Mid-Cross area, this study aimed to evaluate the age, growth and mortality to support the development of effective management plans. For this, monthly overnight gill net catches (from 6 to 72mm mesh sizes) were developed between March 2005 and February 2007. Growth parameters were determined using the FiSAT II length-frequency distribution. A total of 1 421 fish were collected during the survey. The asymptotic growth (L(infinity)) was 80.24cm, growth rate (K) was 0.49/year while the longevity was 6.12 years. The annual instantaneous rate of total mortality (Z) was 2.54/year and the natural mortality (M) was 0.88. Fishing mortality (1.66/year) was higher than the biological reference points (F(opt) = 0.83 and F(limit) = 1.11) and the exploitation rate (0.66) was higher than the predicted value (E(max) = 0.64) indicating that C. gariepinus was over exploited in the Mid-Cross River-Floodplain ecosystem. Some recommended immediate management actions are to strengthen the ban of ichthyocide fishing, closure of the floodplain lakes for most of the year, restricted access to the migratory path of the fish during the flood period and vocational training to the fishers. In order to recover and maintain a sustainable harvest, I suggest that a multi-sector stakeholder group should be formed with governmental agents, community leaders, fishers, fisheries scientists and non-governmental organizations. These short and long term measures, if carefully applied, will facilitate recovery of the fishery.

In the northern part of the South China Sea the 'big-eye', Priacanthus tayenus , spawned once a year in June, had von Bertalanffy growth parameters of k = 0.8 and L ∞= 30 cm, and a mean total annual instantaneous mortality of Z = 2.0, calculated from adjusted catch curves and a mean length equation. The natural mortality rate M = 1.4, fishing mortality rate F = 0.6, and the exploitation rate (E) was 0.27. The maximum potential yield, calculated using Marten's method, was 0.06 kg/recruit when F = 5.4. The fish were heavily parasitised by the protozoan Pleistophora priacanthicola .
A second big-eye, P. macracanthus , spawned twice a year in May-June and September, had growth parameters of κ= 0.7 and L∞= 32, and population parameters of Z = 2.0, . F = 0.7, and E = 0.34. The maximum potential yield was 0.13 kg/recruit when F = 5.8.
A marked reduction in fishing mortality occurred for both species between 1965 and 1966, coinciding with the onset of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Our estimates of maximum potential yield correspond to fishing mortalities eight times estimated levels, though such heavy exploitation could risk recruitment failure.

The biology and fisheries of Tilapia mariae, the only tilapiine cichlid fish in the Iba Oku (Uyo, Nigeria) wetland stream was studied. There were more females than males in the population. The smallest sexually mature female fish was 11.0 cm total length (TL) while the size at 50% maturity was 17.1 cm TL. Absolute fecundity (Fe) ranged from 953 to 3200 eggs and was positively correlated with TL. The fish bred year‐round with peaks in November, March–April and July–September. The seasonalized von Bertalanffy growth function (VBGF) was fitted to the 12 consecutive months length–frequency data (n = 2439) to obtain a VBGF with the following parameters: L∞ (asymptotic length) = 30.4 cm TL, K (growth coefficient) = 0.4 year?1, C (amplitude of growth oscillation) =0.4, and WP (winter point) = 0.9. The seasonalized length‐converted catch curve method gave Z (instantaneous total mortality coefficient) as 1.75 year?1, M (instantaneous natural mortality coefficient) was 0.99 year?1 while F (instantaneous fishing mortality coefficient) was 0.76 year?1 and E (=F/Z the current exploitation rate) was 0.43. Length at first capture (Lc) was 17.7 cm TL. The fish was recruited to the fishery year‐round with two pulses. From the Beverton and Holt relative yield per recruit analysis via the selection ogive procedure, Emax (predicted maximum exploitation rate) was 0.54. The stock was not overexploited, since E < Emax. This study also showed that the fish is an r‐selected species with a few K‐selected traits.

The population dynamics parameters of Diplodus annularis from the eastern middle Adriatic Sea were studied. Total lengths of 1704 specimens ranging from 3.3 to 23.0 cm were obtained from commercial and fishery‐independent catches (2000–2002). The species spawns from April through the end of August, with a peak in May. Overall male to female ratio was 1.00 : 1.05. The species is a rudimentary hermaphrodite in the Adriatic Sea. Total lengths (TL) at 50% maturity were 9.0 cm for males and 10.0 cm for females. These estimated sizes were smaller than the minimum legal landing size (MLS = 15 cm) and greater than the actual minimum landing size (Lc = 7.1 cm) for the bottom trawl net. All specimens sampled were fully mature above 13 cm TL. The oldest individual was 13 years old. Length–weight relationship showed close to isometric growth (b = 3.073). Parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth equation were: L = 23.95 cm; K = 0.126 per year; t0 = −1.664 year; r2 = 0.896. The low value of total mortality (Z = 0.72) was a consequence of the relatively low rate of natural mortality (M = 0.39) and fishing mortality (F = 0.33). The exploitation ratio was E = 0.46. Estimated parameters and the relative yield‐per‐recruit analysis did not indicate any overexploitation of the species in the study area. However, the estimates include uncertainties and require further confirmation, especially of the natural mortality.

Among the several fish species comercially exploited at the Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul, the "pacu" (Piaractus mesopotamicus) stands as one of the most important. Information regarding its exploitation level is necessary for the proper management of its stocks. Between 1996 and 1997 data on total length of the pacu were collected on a monthly basis from specimens caught by professional and sport fishers in the municipality of Corumbá. These data were used to estimate growth parameters and to assess the exploitation level for this species, applying the Beverton and Holt yield per recruit model. Length frequency analysis, carried out with the software FISAT (ELEFAN), was used to estimate growth parameters: 1996: L(infinity) = 87.20 cm; K = 0.34 year(-1); phi(')=3.41; C = 0.74; WP = 0.81; Longevity = 8.40 years; and 1997: L(infinity) = 86.50 cm; K = 0.34 year(-1); phi(')=3.40; C = 0.60; WP = 0.80; Longevity = 8.40 years. The value for t(0) is -0.363 years for mean values of L(infinity) and k. The weight-length relationship, calculated from data derived from experimental fisheries carried out in 1999 and 2000, is described by the equation: W = 0.048LF(2.835). Estimated mortalities and survival rates were: 1996: Z = 1.51 year(-1); M = 0.62 year(-1); F = 0.89 year(-1); S = 21.9%; and 1997: Z = 1.65 year(-1); M = 0.63 year(-1); F = 1.02 year(-1); S = 19.1%. The yield per recruit analysis showed the following values: F(Present) = 0.96 year(-1); F(max) = 0.67 year(-1) ; F(0.1) = 0.51 year(-1) (for L(c) = 26.7 cm). These results suggest that the pacu is overexploited in the area, so that restrictive measures are in need to manage the pacu fisheries.

This aper examines the status of the tilapia fishery in Fosu Lagoon at Cape Coast, inthe Central Region of GLana (5°07’ N,1°6’ W). The blackchin tilaia, Sarotherodon melanotheron (Rüppel), constitutes about 90 % by weight of the total fish catch, and the annual yield of 452—664 kg/ha is apreciably higher than those reported for other tropical lagoons. Variations in the CPUE (0·30—0·96 kg/man-h) were related to fluctuations in the water level of the lagoon. Using the ELEFAN method, estimates of the growth and mortality parameters, based on length-frequency data were: Loo = 16·1 cm TL, K = 0·82/ yr, Z = 4·95/yr, M = 1·90/yr and F = 3·05/yr. The growth estimates and the maturity-length ratio suggest that the population is stunted. The mean length at first capture(Lcso) was estimated to be 6·2 cm TL. Although the present rate of exploitation (E= 0·62) appears high, an analysis of the relative yield-er-recruit (Y/R) and highrecruitment shows that this exploitation rate can be maintained by the Egoon population. Recruitment occurs throughout the year with two peaks, and this probably ensures the sustenance of the high yield.

The octopus (Octopus maya) is one of the most important fish resources in the Mexican Gulf of Mexico with a mean annual yield of 9000 ton, and a reasonable number of jobs created; O. maya represents 80% of the total octopus catch, followed by Octopus vulgaris. There are two artisanal fleets based on Octopus maya and a middle-size fleet that covers both species. Catch-at-length structured data from the artisanal fleets, for the 1994 season (August 1st to December 15th) were used to analyze the O. maya population dynamics and stock and to estimate the current level of exploitation. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters were: L infinity = 252 mm, mantle length; K = 1.4 year-1; oscillation parameters C = 1.0, WP = 0.6; and tz = 0.842 years. A rough estimate of natural mortality was M = 2.2, total mortality from catch curve Z = 8.77, and exploitation rate F/Z = 0.75. This last value suggests an intensive exploitation, even when yield per recruit analysis indicates both fleets may increase the minimum legal size on about 10% to increase yields. The length-based VPA also shows that the stock is being exploited under its maximum acceptable biological limit. These apparently contradictory results are explained by biological and behavioral characteristics of this species. Because most females die after reproduction, a new gross estimation of natural mortality was computed as M = 3.3. The new estimate of exploitation rate was F/Z = 0.57. This new value coincides with results from the length-VPA and the Thompson and Bell methods, the former suggesting that a reduction of 20% in fishing mortality may provide larger yields. This fishery resource is fully exploited and current management measures must be revised to sustain and probably optimize yields.

Acanthobrama terraesanctae (local name lavnun), an endemic planktivorous cyprinid, dominates total fish numbers (>80%) in Lake Kinneret, and may have a significant top-down impact on the lake ecosystem. The length of young-of-the-year fish calculated from the von Bertalanffy equation agreed with field observations of juvenile growth. An unusual bi-modal length-frequency distribution observed in May 1993 provided additional help in age identification. Males grew more slowly than females and reached a lower maximum length. Total mortality coefficients (exponents) of males and females >12 cm (minimal legal size of fish in the catch) were similar ( c. 1·52). An average cohort reaches maximum biomass during its second year. Maximum production is created at the end of the second year. The production: biomass ratio of the population was 1·16, and 36% of total lavnun standing stock was taken by fishing. From the late 1980s to early 1990s, when standing stock and population structure were stable, the average harvest of 1000 t was consistent with a total lavnun biomass of 2800 t, which constitutes 50–70% of the total fish stock measured acoustically in the lake. Such a biomass could be sustained by the known production of zooplankton. Absence of verified growth data for lavnun contributed to the collapse of the fishery in 1993, because it hampered timely revision of fishery policy in response to the drastic changes in the lavnun stock in 1992.

Panulirus gracilis is a high valuable lobster species with considerable captures along the tropical Pacific coast. In this study, I present some biological and fishery parameters described after a sample of 843 lobsters, landed in Playa Lagarto from November 2007 to October 2008. From landing records, a total of 74.9% of lobsters were below the minimum legal catch size (80 mm CL). Carapace lengths were in the range of 42.8 and 143.6 mm for males and 115 and 35.8 mm for females. The size structure showed a wide overlapping of population segments, and a trend to increase with depth, where lung diving and "hooka" diving operations take place. Sex ratio was 1.36 M:H. The relationship between weight and LC revealed that females are heavier than males of the same size, and this difference was significant (p < 0.05). The von Bertalanffy growth parameters for males and females respectively (K = 0.45-0.38, LC(infinity) = 166.9-121.7) showed accelerated growth compared to other species. Males observed a higher growth rate than females. Furthermore, natural mortality (M), total mortality (Z) and fishing mortality (F) was higher in males (0.49-2.34-1.92) than in females (0.47-1.82-1.42). Recruitment was continuous for both sexes during the year, with an elevated intensity of 18.5% in July. Under the current fishing regime the population could be at risk of collapse, as indicated by the high exploitation rate (E) 0.80  相似文献

In our effort to give some information which investigates autecological parameters for southern barbel, a study of age, growth and reproduction for this species was carried out in the Rentina stream, northeastern Greece. The length-weight relationship can be described by the equations W = 0.008 L3.159 and W = 0.0583 L2.428 for females and males, respectively (W = body weight in g, L = fork length in cm). The most rapid growth in length occured during the first year of life (7.3 cm) after which growth decreased and remained constant at approximately 3.4 cm per year. The average density and biomass were 0.25 fish. m-2 and 9.35 g. m-2, respectively. The southern barbel becomes sexualy mature at the second year of life for both sexes. The mean absolute fecundity was 9119 ± 322 eggs with mean diameter 1.2 ± 0.2 mm. Spawning of this species, in the study area, occurs in June at mean temperature 19°C.

The biology of the bigeye grenadier at South Georgia
The biology of the bigeye grenadier Macrourus holotrachys caught as by‐catch in the Patagonian toothfish Dissostichus eleginoides longline fishery conducted around South Georgia was investigated to improve data available for fisheries management. Age estimates suggest that M. holotrachys is a moderately slow growing species ( K  = 0·10), reaching ages of >30 years and attaining total lengths ( L T) >80 cm ( L  = 33). The size at which 50% of females had started to mature ( L int50) for M. holotrachys was 21 cm pre‐anal length ( L PA) and occurred at c . 9 years old. Estimates of natural mortality and Pauly's growth performance index were found to be low ( M  = 0·09 and Φ = 2·82 respectively). Gonad maturity stage was described from macroscopic and histological investigation. Mature ovaries had oocytes at all developmental stages with between 22 and 55% likely to be spawned each year. Absolute fecundity ranged from 22 000 to 260 000 eggs and was positively correlated with both pre‐anal length and mass. A highly skewed sex ratio of 32 : 1, females : males, was found for specimens caught by longlines but not for a small sample of shallower trawl‐caught specimens. It is suggested that females are far more susceptible to longline capture than males. Macrourus holotrachys is a bentho‐pelagic predator and scavenger that feeds on a wide range of fishes and invertebrates. The fish are long lived, slow‐growing species typical of deep‐water grenadiers; fisheries management strategies should reflect their probable susceptibility to overfishing.

The black bass, Micropterus salmoides, was introduced to Brazil from North America in 1922. Since then the species has been reared in aquaculture facilities intended to stock reservoirs as additions to native stocks available for angling. At present no scientific information on the biology of black bass in Brazilian waters is available. Since black bass dispersion may cause severe impacts on native Brazilian fish fauna, information on the basic biological parameters of this species is necessary. The objective of the present study is to provide information on the growth, age structure, and mortality of the species in a small reservoir in southern Brazil, where the species reproduces regularly. Based on scale readings, the von Bertalanffy growth curve was calculated and compared to the length-frequency distribution of the population. Both methods showed similar results. Maximum length was about 44 cm. The mean length at the end of the first year was 23.1 cm (s.d. = 13.88); at that of the second, 37.3 cm (s.d. = 12.52); and 41.4 cm (s.d. = 9.92) at the third. Oldest fish were three years old. The growth performance index phi' was 3.28 cm year(-1). Mortality increased from 0.16 year(-1) between the first and the second cohort, to 0.8 year(-1) between the second and third. The results show that black bass in Brazil grows faster than in its area of origin, but longevity is shorter and body shape, stouter. The cause of high mortality at a relatively early age may be connected with the loss of genetic diversity due to inbreeding of the Brazilian stocks, which originated from few introduced individuals a long time ago. The fact that black bass reproduces in reservoirs and grows rapidly may be considered a threat to conserving fish diversity in Brazilian ecosystems.

Diodon holocanthus is an important economic and ecological species of the demersal fish community, caught as bycatch from local shrimp fishery. The reproductive biology of this long-spine porcupinefish has not yet been described, and reproductive season, the sex ratio, length distribution, length at first gonad maturity, and the gonad macro and microscopic features are described. A total of 400 organisms, ranging from 5.0 to 40.3 cm (average 18.4 cm) total length, were caught from the continental shelf of the Central Mexican Pacific, from December 1995 and December 1998. Sex ratio was 1:0.86 females to males (n = 253). The length at which 50% of the individuals showed maturing gonads was 19.7 cm for females and 20.1 cm for males. Length of the smallest organism with ripe gonads was 12.2 cm for females and 13 cm for males. Four gonadal maturation stages were found in both sexes, and five oocyte development phases were identified. The oocyte development pattern is of asynchronous type, which means the species can reproduce several times a year. Testicle development is lobular type, as in most teleost fishes. Monthly mean values of the gonad-somatic index suggest the reproduction activity peaks in June, and September-December.

The porthole shovelnose catfish, Hemisorubim platyrhynchos, is the sixth largest pimelodidae of the Pantanal. Its age and growth were studied using pectoral fin-spines from fish collected in the Cuiabá river basin, Pantanal. The fish, which came from commercial and experimental fisheries, were all caught with hook and line. Growth-ring formation time could not be defined through the Kruskal-Wallis test on marginal increment (H = 4.142; p = 0.247). Nevertheless, decrease in the marginal increment index occurring as waters recede suggests this as the probable time when growth rings form. Estimation of the parameters of von Bertalanffy growth curve, adjusted through nonlinear regression to observed fork lengths, with L(infinity) fixed at 64 cm, were: k = 0.222 year(-1); t(o) = -2.149 years. Individual life span was estimated at 11.4 years. The results suggest that fork length is a good predictor of age for individuals of this species.

Age, growth and mortality were analysed for red bandfish, Cepola macrophthalma, collected in the eastern Adriatic from May 2002 to June 2003. The oldest male was estimated to be age 4, the oldest female age 3. Parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth equation are: L = 55.0 cm (SE = 0.1), K = 0.445 (SE = 0.074) and t0 = ?0.1 (SE = 0.001) for males, and L = 48.9 cm (SE = 0.167), K = 0.395 (SE = 0.062) and t0 = ?0.009 (SE = 0.02) for females. The overall sex ratio was 1.42 : 1 in favour of males. Total mortality, corresponding to the slope of the descending limb of the catch curve, was Z = 1.20 per year for females and Z = 1.23 per year for males. Exploitation ratios were E = 0.479 for females and E = 0.433 for males.

A seminal study was conducted in which the population dynamics (growth, mortality and recruitment) of the mudskipper (Periophthalmus papilio) in the Cross River, Nigeria, was elucidated for the first time using length frequency data and the ELEFAN software. The allometric relationship was: Weight=0.012(Length)2.940, n=415, r2=0.939, P <0.0005. The seasonalized Von Bertalanffy growth parameters were L=19.39 cm, K=0.51 y–1, C=0.3, and WP=0.4. The instantaneous total mortality coefficient Z was 2.208 y–1 while the instantaneous natural mortality coefficient was 1.341 y–1. The instantaneous fishing mortality coefficient of 0.867 y–1 yielded the expectedly low exploitation rate E of 0.393. Our estimate shows that the species could reach an average maximum life span of about 6 years in the Cross River system. These results are used in quantitative elucidation of the state of exploitation of the population and will serve as input for the proper and scientific management of the fish resource.Alfred Wegener Institute Contribution nr. 1090.
