The gestural and tactile forms of communication using arms among the young and adult specimen of lower monkeys of subfamily Cercopithecoidea and higher monkeys of subfamily Hominioidea have been investigated. It has been concluded that gestures are the new form of phylogenesis in comparison with the contact patterns, their development is generally connected with the aggressive behaviour. The growing differentiation of gestures connected with the transition from participation of the whole arm to the leading role of the hand and finger gestures has been determined. The frequency of gestures is closely connected with the species structural organization and ecology. 相似文献

Data on 84 characteristics of the skin of 36 species of primates were extracted from a series of articles describing the histological and histochemical properties of the skin of primates. The data were subjected to a cluster analysis. The results were in reasonably good agreement with orthodox primate taxonomies although some exceptions were apparent. The species clustered into four main groups approximately comparable to Prosimii, Cercopithecoidea, Ceboidea, and Hominoidea. The internal arrangements of the Prosimii, Cercopithecoidea, and Hominoidea are commensurate with standard taxonomic practice. Within the Ceboidea, however, the Atelinae and Alouattinae tend to group with the Hominoidea, Aotus and Saimiri show variable placements, and Callimico groups with the Callithricidae. 相似文献

The absence of conspicuous sexual signals in some primates, particularly humans and vervets, has been interpreted as evidence that females of these species are 'concealing' ovulation from males. This conclusion is unjustified: the null hypothesis of no adaptation, that the absence of conspicuous sexual signals has resulted from the absence of selective pressures maintaining such adaptations, is both more parsimonious and better fits the facts. The related suggestion that there has been adaptation among females to conceal ovulation from their own consciousness is also unjustified. What, then, maintains sexual signals in those species that do have them? Many proposed hypotheses for the function of sexual signals do not account for their most puzzling feature: their conspicuousness. According to current theory on the evolution of communication, two explanations seem most plausible: conspicuous sexual signals function to communicate to distant receivers and/or to convince reluctant receivers. There is some empirical support for both hypotheses, but not overwhelming support for either. 相似文献

The airborne-sound and the vibratory signals produced by stridulating males, and the transmission of these signals in the natural biotope were investigated. The song of is composed of repeated uniform syllables with a rate of ca. 30/sec. Intensity approaches 100 dB SPL, 10 cm away from the animal. The spectrum shows three dominant frequency ranges around 8, 16 and 32 kHz.Airborne transmission of the song in such vegetation layers as are found in the biotopes of shows an excess attenuation which increases with frequency. The relative intensities of the frequency components of the song vary as a result of the kind of vegetation, the positions of emitter and receiver, and the separation distance. These relative differences in intensity may be useful during the phonotactic approach to conspecific partners, providing a measure of the distance from the sound source.Stridulating males also produce vibratory signals in the plants they sit on. The spectrum of these signals includes frequencies up to 8 kHz, the first dominant frequency of the song: low frequency components are induced in the plants via the legs and abdomen of the animal. The vibratory signals are transmitted mainly in the form of bending waves. Near the animal, amplitude modulation corresponds to that of the song. At greater distances, reflections and frequency-dependent propagation velocities, cause distortions of this time pattern. Transmission depends greatly on the mechanical properties of the particular plant, attenuation values of 20–50 dB/m being found. Nevertheless, in most cases, vibratory signals may be perceived up to 1.5 – 2 metres away from a stridulating male. 相似文献

Molecular phylogenetic analysis using genes coding for ribosomal RNA and proteins suggests that trypanosomes are monophyletic. Salivarian trypanosomes showing antigenic variation of the variant surface glycoprotein (VSG) diverged from non-Salivarian trypanosomes some 200-300 million years ago. Representatives of the non-Salivarian group, the mammalian parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi, and the fresh-water fish trypanosome, T. carassii, are characterised by surfaces dominated by carbohydrate-rich mucin-like glycoproteins, which are not subject to antigenetic variation. It is suggested that this latter surface structure is typical for non-Salivarian trypanosomes as well as members of the other Kinetoplastid suborder, the Bodonina. This would imply that at some point in time in the evolution of the Salivaria the highly abundant and comparatively poorly immunogenetic mucin-like molecules must have been replaced for equally abundant but highly immunogenic VSG-like molecules. While the selective advantage for such a unique transition is difficult to imagine, the subsequent diversification of VSG genes/molecules may have been comparatively straightforward because even the most limited form of antigenic variation would have extended the duration of infection in the vertebrate and thus would have increased the chance for transfer to the vector. 相似文献

A biochemical analysis has been performed on the relationship between the receptors for Dolichos biflorus agglutinin (DBA) and collagen tailed acetylcholinesterase (16S AChE) in mouse skeletal muscle. The molecular forms of AChE were separated by differential salt extraction and by gradient centrifugation. DBA binding activity was measured using a microtiter plate binding assay and affinity chromatography. The 16S form of AChE was bound to DBA, whereas globular forms of AChE were not. However, only a small proportion of 16S AChE was capable of binding to DBA, and most of the DBA binding capacity in muscle extracts was not associated with the 16S AChE. The possible association with the neuromuscular synapse of DBA binding molecules other than 16S AChE is discussed with respect to our previous histochemical study on DBA binding sites in mouse muscle. 相似文献

Restudy of virtually all of the important collections of European Eocene primates of the family Adapidae indicates that 28 valid species in 8 genera are now known, spanning a time period of nearly 20 million years. The biostratigraphic distribution of each species has been studied in the context of established reference levels, and a maximum of four evolutionary lineages are known from any one locality. Ten new species are proposed in the genera Pelycodus (1 sp.), Protoadapis (4 sp.), Periconodon (2 sp.), Anchomomys (1 sp.), and Adapis (2 sp.). Phylogenetic relationships among the species, based on stratophenetic linking, are indicated whenever possible. 相似文献

1. The ability of homologous series of alcohols, ketones, and aldehydes to cause alteration of intracellular catalase increases approximately threefold for each methylene group added, thus following Traube's rule. Equiactive concentrations of alcohols (methanol to octanol) varied over a 4,000-fold range, yet the average corresponding surface tension was 42 ± 2 dynes/cm., that for ketones 43 ± 2, and for aldehydes (above C1) 41 ± 3. 2. Above C8 the altering activity of alcohols ceased to follow Traube's rule, and at C18 was nil. Yet the surface activities of alcohols from nonanol to dodecanol did follow Traube's rule. These two facts show that the interface which is being affected by these agents is not the cell surface, for if it were, altering activity should not fall off between C9 and C12 where surface activity is undiminished; they show also that micelle formation by short range association of hydrocarbon "tails," usually invoked to explain decrease in biological activity of compounds above C8, is not responsible for this effect in these experiments, in which permeability of the cell membrane probably is involved. 3. The most soluble alcohols and aldehydes (alcohols C1 to C8; aldehydes C1, C2), but not ketones, cause, above optimal concentration, an irreversible inhibition of yeast catalase. 4. The critical concentration of altering agent (i.e., that concentration just sufficient to cause doubling of the catalase activity of the yeast suspension) was independent of the concentration of the yeast cells. 5. Viability studies show that the number of yeast cells killed by the altering agents was not related to the degree of activation of the catalase produced. While all the cells were invariably killed by concentrations of altering agent which produced complete activation, all the cells had been killed by concentrations which were insufficient to cause more than 50 per cent maximal activation. Further, the evidence suggested that the catalase may be partially activated by concentrations of altering agent which cause no decrease in viability at all. Hence alteration, unlike death, may not be all-or-none per cell. 6. The fact that the biological criterion being examined was the activation of a water-soluble enzyme rules out the possibility that the reason for the logarithmic increase in altering activity with chain length was increase in concentration of the altering agent in some intracellular fat phase. It is concluded that these surface-active agents cause enzyme alteration by becoming adsorbed at some intracellular interface and thus causing, directly or indirectly, the modification of catalase properties. 7. It is considered that these data support, but do not provide critical proof for, the interfacial hypothesis, which states that catalase is present at the intracellular interface in question, but is desorbed into solution as a consequence of the alteration process. 相似文献

? Ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi obtain both mineral and simple organic nutrients from soil and transport these to plant roots. Natural abundance of stable isotopes ((15) N and (13) C) in fruit bodies and potential enzymatic activities of ECM root tips provide insights into mineral nutrition of these mutualistic partners. ? By combining rDNA sequence analysis with enzymatic and stable isotope assays of root tips, we hypothesized that phylogenetic affinities of ECM fungi are more important than ECM exploration type, soil horizon and host plant in explaining the differences in mineral nutrition of trees in an African lowland rainforest. ? Ectomycorrhizal fungal species belonging to extraradical mycelium-rich morphotypes generally displayed the strongest potential activities of degradation enzymes, except for laccase. The signature of (15) N was determined by the ECM fungal lineage, but not by the exploration type. ? Potential enzymatic activities of root tips were unrelated to (15) N signature of ECM root tip. The lack of correlation suggests that these methods address different aspects in plant nutrient uptake. Stable isotope analysis of root tips could provide an additional indirect assessment of fungal and plant nutrition that enables enhancement of taxonomic coverage and control for soil depth and internal nitrogen cycling in fungal tissues. 相似文献

Sperm packages are widespread in the order Scorpiones, but absent in the family Buthidae. The morphology of sperm packages is diverse and apparently has phylogenetic information. The objectives of this work were to show diversity of sperm packages and to provide a quantitative basis for using sperm packages’ morphology as a taxonomic character. For this, we conducted a morphological analysis and comparison of the different sperm packages of species of the family Bothriuridae. The seminal content from males of species of Bothriuridae was studied. Specimens from Iuridae, Buthidae, Euscorpiidae, Liochelidae, Scorpionidae, Vaejovidae, Chaerilidae, and Chactidae were used for comparison. Digital images of sperm packages were measured and statistically analysed based on the following variables: total length, head width, head–body angle, total area, and head length. Pairs of variables were also contrasted, and all the variables were correlated with the current phylogenetic hypothesis for Bothriuridae. High morphological diversity and variability in measures was observed. In general, measurements were similar within each genus, but differed amongst genera. Cane‐like sperm packages are very common in species of the family Bothriuridae. Species from Bothriurus show a wide range of sperm package shapes, some of them shared with Timogenes and Vachonia species, supporting the idea of nonmonophyly of the genus. Many species showed sperm package dimorphism inside a single male. Some of the analysed features fit well with the phylogenetic hypothesis in Bothriuridae, and the general package shape shows high correlation with scorpion phylogeny in other families. Bent and round packages are the most common amongst the different families. Sperm packages are not developed in Chaerilidae, as in Buthidae. This is the first morphological and comparative analysis of sperm packages in scorpions, and reveals much greater diversity in this trait than previously known. Our results reinforce the idea that the study of morphology of sperm packages would contribute characters for scorpion phylogeny at different levels. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 161 , 463–483. 相似文献

Understanding the rules that link communication and social behaviour is an essential prerequisite for discerning how a communication system as complex as human language might have evolved. The comparative method offers a powerful tool for investigating the nature of these rules, since it provides a means to examine relationships between changes in communication abilities and changes in key aspects of social behaviour over evolutionary time. Here we present empirical evidence from phylogenetically controlled analyses indicating that evolutionary increases in the size of the vocal repertoire among non-human primate species were associated with increases in both group size and time spent grooming (our measure of extent of social bonding). 相似文献

Chloroplast biogenesis during continuous illumination at either low, cold-hardening temperatures (5°C) or non-hardening temperatures (20°C) was examined by monitoring the etioplast-chloroplast transformation with respect to pigment accumulation and the development of PSI- and PSII-associated electron transport activities in winter rye (Secale cereale L. cv Puma). Generally, chlorophyll and carotenoid accumulation during greening at 20°C were characterized by rapid initial rates in contrast to pronounced, initial lag times during biogenesis at 5°C. Although greening temperature had no effect on the sequential appearance of PSI relative to PSII, greening temperature significantly altered the pattern of appearance of PSI relative to chlorophyll accumulation. Thylakoid biogenesis under continuous illumination at 20°C imposed a pattern whereby the development of PSI activity was antiparallel to chlorophyll accumulation. In contrast, the development of PSI activity under continuous illumination at 5°C was paralllel to chlorophylll accumulation. These developmental patterns were independent of the temperature experienced during etiolation. However, rye seedlings etiolated at 20°C and subsequently subjected to continuous illumination at 5°C exhibited a 70% reduction in the maximum PSII activity (100 mol DCPIP reduced.mg Chl-1.h-1) attained relative to that observed for similar etiolated seedlings greened at 20°C (300 mol DCPIP reduced.mg Chl-1.h-1). This low temperature-induced inhibition could be alleviated by an initial 2 h exposure to continuous light at 20°C prior to greening to 5°C. Rye seedlings etiolated at 5°C attained similar maximal PSII activities (300 mol DCPIP reduced.mg Chl-1.h-1) regardless of the greening temperature. We suggest that the altered kinetics for pigment accumulation, the low temperature-induced change in the pattern for the appearance of PSI activity relative to chlorophyll accumulation and the differential sensitivity of 20° and 5° etiolated seedlings to greening temperature reflect an alteration in membrane organization incurred as a consequence of thylakoid assembly at low temperature.Abbreviations RH
