Resuspension of inorganic sediments in a very shallow Swedish lake is studied using settling sediment traps and measurements of suspended matter. Depth distributions and inventories of137Cs (mCi km2) were determined in sediment from several fresh water lakes in the New York State Adirondack Preserve. Included were Big Moose and Darts Lakes, part of the North Branch of the Moose River system, as well as North, Sagamore, South, and Woods Lakes and the seepage pond, Tamarack Lake. Comparisons were made between the137Cs inventories in these lakes and large inpoundments in the Adirondacks (Hinkley, Great Sacandaga, Stillwater and Cranberry Lake Reservoirs) and other large impoundments and lakes located in various regions of the U.S., especially Cayuga Lake, Ithaca, NY.None of the Adirondack Lakes had137Cs distributions with depth in sediment that closely resembled the deposition pattern of weapons testing as a function of time. All of the natural lakes and small impoundments, including the seepage pond, were found to have significantly lower inventories of137Cs than expected; while the large reservoirs were generally enhanced in137Cs. We suggest that more than one mechanism may be responsible for the low sediment inventories: for the majority of lakes, flushing of137Cs out of the lakes during periods of thermal stratification and ice thaw; and for the seepage pond, remobilization of137Cs into the water column due to biological recycling.  相似文献

Resuspension of bottom sediments is an important lake-internal process with regard to particle cycling and sedimentation. Current methods to measure sediment resuspension are reviewed, such as optical and acoustical instruments, instantaneous multiple point water samplers, sediment traps, sediment cores and grabs, radiotracers such as Pb210, Cs137 and Be7, mass balance calculations, various modelling approaches, statistical methods (correlation analysis), and laboratory experiments.For the quantification of resuspension, the combined use of sediment traps, sediment cores, near bottom current meters, and turbidity meters to measure suspended and settling particulate matter in the hypolimnion of lakes is recommended; in addition, wind stress, seiches, slumping and sliding, and riverine input may be monitored to elucidate the mechanisms behind the process.  相似文献

The distribution of 137Cs and 239,240Pu in sediment core samples of the Finnish lakes Laukunlampi, Lovojärvi and Pääjärvi were determined. The sediment samples were collected using dry ice and liquid nitrogen freezing methods. The sediments of these lakes are annually laminated. A clear maximum concentration of 137Cs and 239,240Pu was found in sediment layers formed during 1962–1964, the years of maximum fallout, and the middle of the 1950's can be estimated from the 137Cs and 239,240Pu profiles. The highest concentrations, 11 500 and 820 pCi kg–1 dry wt for 137Cs and 239,240Pu, respectively, were found in the sediment of Laukunlampi. The vertical distribution was similar for 137Cs and 239,240Pu in the lakes investigated. A slight migration of 239,240Pu and 137Cs was found and the migration of 137Cs seems to be higher than that of 239,240Pu. The advantages of 137Cs dating method are rapidity and simplicity. 239,240Pu is preferable when the sample size is small. The agreement found between 137Cs and 239,240Pu dates and the annual laminae show that these fallout radio isotopes can be used for dating sediments formed during the past 25 years.  相似文献

Sediment traps were placed in 29 small lakes in south and central Sweden at 2 m below the surface of the lakes and at 2 m above the lake bottom. Traps were exposed for approximately 120 days during the summer months before collection. Rates of sedimentation in both top and bottom traps were compared to 32 catchment, morphometric and water column parameters in an attempt to identify the processes which influence sediment accumulation. Using only lake water pH, maximum lake depth (Dmax) and lake surface area (Ao), 67% of the variance in the bottom trap sedimentation rates was explained. Only pH and Ao were useful predictors for the top traps. Using the bottom traps as a measure of gross sedimentation and the top traps as a measure of net sedimentation (plus periphyton growth in the traps), resuspension was separated from net sedimentation in the bottom traps. Resuspension calculated from these data is compared with more conventional methods of calculation.  相似文献

The movement of sediment between the lake bottom and water column of shallow lakes can be sizeable due to the large potential for resuspension in these systems. Resuspended sediments have been shown to alter phytoplankton community composition and elevate water column production and nutrient concentrations. We measured the summer sedimentation rates of two lakes in 2003 and six lakes in 2004. All lakes were shallow and located in the Alaskan Arctic. In 2004, turbidity, light attenuation, total sediment:chlorophyll a mass in the sediment traps, and thermal stratification were also measured in each of the lakes. The sediment:chlorophyll a mass was much greater than if the sediment was derived from phytoplankton production in all of the lakes, indicating that the source of the sedimenting material was resuspension and allochthonous inputs. Consistent with these findings, the temporal variation in sedimentation rate was synchronous between most lakes, and sedimentation rate was positively related to wind speed and rainfall suggesting that sedimentation rate was strongly influenced by landscape-scale factors (e.g., wind and rain events). Two of the lakes are located on deposits of loess that accumulated during past glacial periods. These two lakes had sedimentation rates that were significantly greater and more variable than any of the other lakes in the study, as well as high turbidity and light attenuation. Our results indicate that sedimentation in these shallow arctic lakes is supported primarily by allochthonous inputs and resuspension and that landscape-scale factors (e.g., weather and geology) impact on the transport of materials between the lake bottom and water column. To determine recent sediment movement, we measured the levels of 137Cs (an artificial radionuclide produced during nuclear weapons testing) of 118 southern Lake Michigan samples and 27 in Green Bay. These samples, taken from 286 grab samples of the upper 3 cm of sediment, were collected in 1975 as part of a systematic study of Lake Michigan sediment. 137Cs levels correlated well with concentrations of organic carbon, lead, and other anthropogenic trace metals in the sediment. 137Cs had a higher correlation with silt-sized than with clay-sized sediment (0.55 and 0.46, respectively). Atmospherically derived 137Cs and trace metals are being redistributed by sedimentary processes in Lake Michigan after being incorporated in suspended sediment. We determined a distribution pattern of 137Cs that represents areas of southern Lake Michigan where sediment deposition is occurring.  相似文献

1. Positive effects of fish on algal biomass have variously been attributed to cascading top‐down effects and to nutrient enrichment by fish excretion. 2. Here, we used a combination of field and laboratory approaches to test an additional hypothesis, namely that the physical resuspension of settled algal cells by fish enhances algal biomass and alters community composition. 3. A multi‐lake survey showed that phytoplankton biomass and the fraction of motile algae increased with the concentration of inorganic suspended solids. This correlation could not be explained by wind‐induced resuspension because of the small size of the lakes. 4. In an enclosure experiment, chlorophyll‐a concentration, phytoplankton abundance and inorganic suspended solids increased significantly in the presence of Cyprinus carpio (common carp), but only if the fish had access to the sediment. No such effects were seen when a net prevented carp reaching the sediment. 5. The effects of enhanced nutrients and reduced zooplankton grazing as a result of fish feeding could not (fully) explain these observations, suggesting that the resuspension by carp of settled algae from a surface film on the sediment was the major factor in the outcome of the experiment. 6. An increase in diatoms and green algae (organisms with a relatively large sedimentation velocity) only in enclosures where carp could reach the sediment supported this view. 7. Several lines of evidence indicate that fish‐induced resuspension of algal cells from the sediment is an important mechanism that affects phytoplankton biomass and community composition in shallow lakes.  相似文献

We determined the inventories of four anthropogenic trace elements, Pb, Zn, As, and Cd, and two radionuclides, 137Cs and excess 210Pb, in sediment cores collected from eight remote lakes in the Adirondack region of the northeastern United States. The inventories of all six substances vary considerably among the sediment cores, although the lakes and their associated catchments must have received similar cumulative per unit area atmospheric inputs of these substances. These variations are highly correlated, indicating that the trace elements and radionuclides are affected in a coherent way by the processes controlling their deposition to the sediments of these lakes. Assuming that the anthropogenic trace element inventories in each sediment core are enhanced or depleted relative to cumulative atmospheric deposition to the extent indicated by the sediment core inventories of either 137Cs or excess 210Pb, we produced estimates of the cumulative atmospheric inputs of the four anthropogenic trace elements to this region. Comparison of the excess 210Pb normalized anthropogenic Pb, Zn, Cd inventories of the Adirondack sediment cores with excess 210Pb normalized inventories of the same substances in a group of South Central Ontario lakes suggests that the Adirondack region has received greater cumulative anthropogenic inputs of Pb, Zn and Cd by a factor of 1.6, 4.5, and 2.9, respectively.  相似文献

Sediment cores from the profundal region of relatively young (ca. 45 years), warm‐monomictic Lake Vechten were dated with Cs and 210Pb and analyzed for major carotenoids, chlorophyll, and pheophytin. Vertical sediment accretion rates determined from a clay/sand horizon and from the radionuclide datings varied between 0.60 and 0.74 cm/year. Sedimentation rates based on paniculate matter collected in sediment traps agreed with results of the 137Cs method with average values of respectively 2.9 and 2.3 kg dry weight m‐2 year‐1. It was concluded that the profundal sediment is fairly undisturbed. Pigments showed a severalfold increase from the deepest to the superficial sediment layers. Their profiles were compared with limnological data obtained during previous studies of Lake Vechten. Evidence was provided that the distribution of pigments reflected grossly the trophic history of the lake, which became more eutrophic during the last two decades. Pigment analyses of sediment cores may be a useful tool to rapidly obtain rough basic information on the recent trophic development of stratified lakes liable to eutrophication.  相似文献

Sediment cores from nine lakes in southern Norway (N) and six in northern New England (NE) were dated by 137Cs, 210Pb and in NE also by pollen, and were analyzed geochemically and for diatoms. Cores from two N and three NE lakes were analyzed for cladocerans. 137Cs dating is unreliable in these lakes, probably due to mobility of Cs in the sediment. In Holmvatn sediment, an up-core increase in Fe, starting ca. 1900, correlates with geochemical indications of decreasing mechanical erosion of soils. Diatoms indicate a lake acidification starting in the 1920's. We propose that soil Fe was mobilized and runoff acidified by acidic precipitation and/or by soil acidification resulting from vegetational succession following reduced grazing. Even minor land use changes or disturbances in lake watersheds introduce ambiguity to the sedimentary evidence relating to atmospheric influences. Diatom counts from surface sediments in 36 N and 31 NE lakes were regressed against contemporary water pH to obtain coefficients for computing past pH from subsurface counts. Computed decreases of 0.3–0.8 pH units start between I890 and I930 in N lakes already acidic (pH 5.0–5.5) before the decrease. These and lesser decreases in other lakes start decades to over a century after the first sedimentary indications of atmospheric heavy metal pollution. It is proposed that the acidification of precipitation accompanied the metal pollution. The delays in lake acidification may be due to buffering by the lakes and watersheds. The magnitude of acidification and heavy metal loading of the lakes parallels air pollution gradients. Shift in cladoceran remains are contemporary with acidification, preceding elimination of fishes.  相似文献

Data obtained from a small (150 ha) experimental catchment, Hereford U.K., have shown that land drains contributed >50% of the total catchment suspended sediment (SS) yield over a two year period. In one of the monitored drains, annual sediment yields were 964 and 978 kg ha–1. Particulate phosphorus (PP) contributed >60% of total phosphorus lost through the drains and at least 73% of the total drain load came from topsoil. A major question that was not answered by the monitoring programme was whether SS and PP loads had increased since the drains had been installed between the 1960s and 1980s. To address this problem, a sediment yield record was reconstructed from the Kyre Pool catchment in Worcestershire that has a similar drainage history and soil types. Reservoir sediments were dated using the 210Pb crs method and results suggest a fourfold increase in SS yield (300–1170 kg ha–1 yr–1) and PP loads (0.19–0.79 kg ha–1 yr–1) since the 1960s. The most recent SS and PP loads are comparable to those obtained from catchment monitoring. The high lake sediment 137Cs inventory suggests a significant influx of eroded topsoil and 137Cs activities in the most recent lake sediments are comparable to those of monitored land drains, supporting the hypothesis that land drainage has had a major impact on SS and PP yields and pathways.  相似文献

Sedimentary losses of phosphorus in some natural and artificial Iowa lakes   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0  
Phosphorus sedimentation in four natural and four artificial Iowa lakes was measured by using sediment traps to determine if sedimentary phosphorus losses were greater in artificial lakes than in natural lakes and the limnological factors influencing phosphorus loss rates. Mean phosphorus sedimentation rates ranged from 13.3 to 218 mg · m–2 day–1. Although phosphorus sedimentation rates for the natural lakes as a group did not differ significantly from the rates for artificial lakes, there were significant differences among individual lakes. Phosphorus sedimentation rates also varied significantly during different seasons at different locations within a lake and at different depths within a location. Despite the variance, phosphorus sedimentation rates were strongly correlated with inorganic sediment concentrations and inorganic matter sedimentation rates, thus suggesting that inorganic sediments influence phosphorus sedimentation rates. When Iowa data were combined with data from published studies, mean sedimentation rates were directly correlated with mean chlorophyll a concentrations of the lakes. These data strongly suggest that sedimentation rates as measured by sediment traps are strongly influenced by the trophic status of a lake. Though sedimentation rates were higher in the more productive lakes, it is suggested that these rates represent only gross sedimentation rates rather than net sedimentation rates because of resuspension and resedimentation of bottom sediments.  相似文献

Trapa quadrispinosa Roxb is a common floating-leaved macrophyte in China. In this study, the effects of Trapa on sediment resuspension in Lake Taihu, a large, shallow, eutrophic lake in eastern China, were investigated using sediment traps. The study was conducted at stations with and without Trapa beds from 7 September to 18 October, 2003. Results showed that sediment resuspension rates at the station without Trapa were significantly higher than those at the station with Trapa. During the study period (41 days), 10,970 g dw m−2 of surface sediment was resuspended within the Trapa beds and 29,903 g dw m−2 in the pelagic zone. These equate to phosphorus fluxes of 7.4 g m−2 to the water column at the station with Trapa and 16.1 g m−2 at the station without Trapa. Floating-leaved macrophytes, such as Trapa, may be important in sediment resuspension and internal phosphorus loading in shallow lakes.  相似文献

Three simple methods were developed to estimate the proportion of particles in lake water derived from resuspended material. These techniques use the different distributions of long and short-lived radioisotopes sorbed onto particles and were tested in the three basins of Lake Erie using 7Be, 137Cs and 210Po/210Pb.While the concentration of 210Po on particles did not vary significantly in the lake, resuspended particles were characterized by high concentrations of 137Cs and low concentrations of 7Be. The distribution of these radioisotopes is consistent with a simple mixing model in which the fraction of particles in the lake water derived from resuspension ranged from 8% to about 100%. Higher concentrations of resuspended particles were found in deeper samples from the nepheloid layer and in the shallow western basin where thermal stratification was very weak.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to estimate the effect of sediment resuspension, a common phenomenon in many lakes, on the phosphorus budget of a eutrophicated lake. We used two different approaches, mass balance calculations and spatially comprehensive resuspension measurements, to determine the level of phosphorus loading from which rehabilitation action is started in a dimictic north temperate lake. The effect of resuspension was assumed to be significant, since it often is a governing process for cycling of material in lakes. Internal loading was multifold to that of external loading as determined by the budget calculation. Spatially comprehensive sedimentation and resuspension measurements were necessary, since deep site versus spatially comprehensive measurements had a marked difference in their results. Resuspension of P slightly exceeded the internal loading assessed by budget calculations and thereby proved its significance as a governing in-lake process that influences P cycling strongly. The shallow areas were of importance, since most of the total P load originated from there. The fate of P after resuspension depends on the retention capacity of resuspended particles in addition to prevailing biological and physico-chemical conditions. Therefore, sediment resuspension can either strengthen or diminish internal nutrient load and the processes of the shallow zones are of importance.  相似文献

A yearlong campaign to examine sediment resuspension was conducted in large, shallow and eutrophic Lake Taihu, China, to investigate the influence of vegetation on sediment resuspension and its nutrient effects. The study was conducted at 6 sites located in both phytoplankton-dominated zone and macrophyte-dominated zone of the lake, lasting for a total of 13 months, with collections made at two-week intervals. Sediment resuspension in Taihu, with a two-week high average rate of 1771 g·m-2·d-1 and a yearly average rate of 377 g·m-2·d-1, is much stronger than in many other lakes worldwide, as Taihu is quite shallow and contains a long fetch. The occurrence of macrophytes, however, provided quite strong abatement of sediment resuspension, which may reduce the sediment resuspension rate up to 29-fold. The contribution of nitrogen and phosphorus to the water column from sediment resuspension was estimated as 0.34 mg·L-1 and 0.051 mg·L-1 in the phytoplankton-dominated zone. Sediment resuspension also largely reduced transparency and then stimulated phytoplankton growth. Therefore, sediment resuspension may be one of the most important factors delaying the recovery of eutrophic Lake Taihu, and the influence of sediment resuspension on water quality must also be taken into account by the lake managers when they determine the restoration target.  相似文献

Radiometric dating for recent lake sediments on the Tibetan Plateau   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We present radiometric data from nine lakes across the Tibetan Plateau, and compare their reliability in relation to recent research. Unsupported 210Pb profiles show, except for one particular lake, non-exponential decline of 210Pb activity with sediment depth. Stratigraphic dates based on global atmospheric nuclear weapons maximum fallout of 137Cs (1963) support the use of the constant rate of 210Pb supply (CRS) model in four of the dated cores. The discrepancy in the others is likely due to recent increased input of catchment-derived 210Pb. 210Pb dates in this study suggest that post depositional diffusion of 137Cs activity has been significant. The practice of assigning early 1950s dates (start of global atmospheric thermonuclear testing) to lake sediment sequences on the Tibetan Plateau should be used with caution. 137Cs profiles from Tibetan lake sediment cores and their geographical distribution suggest that 137Cs derived from the 1986 Chernobyl accident or atmospheric testing in China was not sufficient to form a significant peak effective for dating.  相似文献

The rates of sedimentation of fallout nuclides were determined by means of sediment traps during 28 months after the Chernobyl accident in southern Lake Päijänne, Finland. The spatial distribution of the radionuclide content of the lake bottom was studied on 35 sediment cores in winters 1987/88 and 1988/89. The results were compared with simultaneous observations of the radionuclide content of the water and seston. The role of different transfer mechanisms in the elimination of radionuclides from the water column is discussed.The values recorded for the flux to the lake sediments were on average of the same order of magnitude as the initial deposition on the lake surface (Cs-137 65 kBqm–2). The radionuclide flux to the sediments was rapid during the first months after the accident. After that the elimination of dissolved nuclides from the water mass became significantly slower. The highest flux rate was that of Ce-144 and the lowest that of Rh-106 (Ru-106). Of the radiocesium, about half of the initial inventory was transferred to the sediments after the first observation year.The content of radionuclides showed considerable spatial variation on the lake bottom (Cs-137 7–280 kBqm–2). Direct adsorption of radiocesium explains unexpectedly high concentrations on shallow erosion bottoms. There was a clear tendency for the concentrations to increase with depth, as a result of the focusing effect. Sediment resuspension had a significant impact on the total flux of radionuclides to deepwater sediments. Estimates were made of the resuspended flux of radionuclides.  相似文献

Hidden Lake is a perched, brown-water lake located in the centre of Great Sandy Island (Fraser Is.), S.E. Queensland. It is highly acid (pH 4.0), oligotrophic and is thermally and chemically stratified for most of the year. The sediments revealed a 137Cs profile which departed from the temporal pattern of 137Cs fallout in Brisbane and was represented by an exponential increase of 137Cs towards the surface sediments from ca. 32 cm depth. The possible causes of the divergent profile are discussed, including physical and biological mixing, lag in the transport of catchment material to the sedimentary basin, diffusion, recycling and biological concentration. It is hypothesised that a combination of the last four processes, with diffusion facilitated by the highly acid conditions, are the major causes of the observed 137Cs profile. Possible recycling and bioconcentration of 137Cs raises questions as to the validity of this method of dating in similar environmental conditions, and as to the interpretation of other palaeochemical data. These hypotheses are to be tested against profiles obtained from 14C, 210Pb, 239/240Pu analyses of the sediment, and the measurement of 137Cs activity in the water and biota of the lake.  相似文献
