The phytophagous bug Riptortus clavatus (Thunberg) (Heteroptera: Alydidae) produces two or three generations per year in Central Japan and overwinters in the adult stage. In bugs from the Kyoto population (35°00 N, 135°45 E), we studied (1) the effects of day-length on the nymphal and preoviposition periods under constant photoperiod at 20.5 °C, and (2) photoperiodic induction of adult diapause at 20.5 °C and under a combination of constant photoperiod and natural daily rhythm of temperature in the forest-steppe zone of Russia (50°38 N, 35°58 E). Then, we examined (3) the timing of diapause induction under quasi-natural conditions in the same region, far outside the species' natural geographical range. At 20.5 °C, the nymphal period in both males and females was significantly longer under regimes with shorter photophases than under those with longer photophases. The preoviposition period in females was significantly longer under the near-critical long-day regime L14:D10 than under typical long-day regimes (L15:D9, L16:D8, and L17:D7). The critical day-length for diapause induction was shorter under conditions of natural daily rhythm of temperature than those reported at constant 20, 25, and 30 °C. Under quasi-natural conditions in the forest-steppe zone, R. clavatus entered diapause in September, much later than the local populations of true bugs studied to date. This experiment showed that R. clavatus was maladapted to new environmental conditions: diapause was induced too late with the result that all or most nymphs hatched in late August or early September will die.  相似文献

Apical growth cessation as affected by photoperiod and temperature has been studied in seedlings of two latitudinal ecotypes of Salix and Betula. The critical photoperiod for apical growth cessation at constant temperatures of 15 and 21°C was about 22 h for a northern (69°C39′N) and about 15–16 h for a southern (59°C40′N) ecotype of Salix pentandra. Fluctuating day/night temperatures (21°C/9°C, 15°C/6°C) induced apical growth cessation in northern ecotypes even at 24–h photoperiod. Disagreements in critical photoperiods found in various studies are discussed.  相似文献

Phenological records of 50 plant species were made during 1988–89 in an alpine meadow (30° 10-30° 13 N lat. and 79° 39-79°-41 E long.) of Central Himalaya located between 3100–3750 m elevation. The growth initiation occurred when temperature began to rise continuously and the resulting in snowmelt. The peaks of the various phenophases succeeded one after another in time, within a period of about four months (from May to September) which is longer than the period reported for the alpine sites of higher latitudes. The period of growth initiation appeared to be related to growth form, the species showing earlier growth initiation (when temperatures were lower) deployed leaves to lower heights, close to the ground. A majority of forbs completed growth cycle earlier than the grasses. For example, one group represented by Trachydium roylei reached peak growth a few weeks before did another group of species, represented by Danthonia cachemyriana, which is indicative of niche separation of the respective group of species. Activities of accumulation of live and dead shoot biomass were clearly separated in time in most communities, the former occurring from May to August, and the latter mainly in September. Nomenclature: Osmaston (1926).  相似文献

We have examined shoot and root growth and the concentration of carbohydrates in seedlings of a northern (67°N) and a southern (61°N) ecotype of Betula pendula Roth. cultivated at root-zone temperatures of 2, 6, 12 and 17°C. Three hydroponic experiments were conducted in controlled environments. We used three different pretreatments before seedlings were subjected to the experimental temperature treatments. Actively growing seedlings that were acclimated to the hydroponic solution for 3 weeks at a root temperature of 17°C, continued to grow at all the experimental temperatures, with an expected increase in growth from 2 to 17°C. However, if we started with ecodormant cold stored plants or used seedlings grown actively in perlite, no growth was observed at 2°C and only minor growth was found at 6°C. The highest root temperature always produced the best growth. The concentration of nonstructural carbohydrates was higher in seedlings grown at 2°C than at 17°C, and this is probably due to extensive incorporation of carbohydrates into cell walls and other structural elements at 17°C. We found no evidence for differences between the two ecotypes in root growth, in timing of bud burst, but shoot growth terminated in the northern ecotype in the first experiment because the natural photoperiod was below the critical value. Our study highlights the importance of post-transplantation stress (planting check) related to root growth, and that root threshold temperatures may change according to the way plants are pretreated.  相似文献

Photosynthetically active membranes have been prepared from the thermophilic cyanobacterium Mastigogladus laminosus by treatment with lysozyme. The membranes were active in electron transport through photosystem I and II as well as in photophosphorylation and proton uptake. Cells were grown at 40°, 45° and 55°C respectively. The temperature optimum of oxygen evolution of whole cells was about 10°C higher than the growth temperature. In isolated membranes the temperature optimum for cyclic photophosphorylation was identical to the growth temperature of the cells whereas the optimum for photosystem II electron transport never exceeded 40°C. Photophosphorylation was inhibited by N, N-dicyclohexyl carbodiimide (DCCD), carbonyl-cyanide-m-chlorophenylhydrazone and NH4Cl, whereas proton uptake was enhanced by DCCD. Electron transport was slightly inhibited by these treatments. The membranes could be stored for several weeks at-20°C in 50% glycerol without any loss in the activities.Abbreviations DPIP 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol - CCCP Carbonyl-cyanide-m-chlorophenylhydrazone - DCCD N,N-dicyclohexyl carbodiimide - PMS N-methylphenazonium methosulfate - DCMU 3-(3-4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea - TMP 20 mM Tris-HCl buffer pH 7.8, 10 mM MgCl2, 5 mM phosphate buffer pH 7.8  相似文献

Growth and dormancy as affected by photoperiod and temperature have been studied in Norway spruce ecotypes of different latitudinal and altitudinal origin. First-year seedlings were used. In all ecotypes apical growth cessation and terminal bud formation occurred within 2 weeks after exposure to SD at temperatures of 18 to 24°C. At lower temperatures or at near-critical photoperiods the response was delayed. The critical photoperiod for apical growth cessation varied from 21 hours in ecotype Steinkjer, Norway (64°N) to about 15 hours in ecotype Lankowitz, Austria (47°04′N). High-elevation ecotypes also had longer critical pholoperiods than low-elevation ecotypes from the same latitude. A detectable growth depression resulted from as little as 1 or 2 SDs of 10 hours, and with 4 or more SDs apical growth cessation took place. In contrast to the situation in the shoot, root growth was not affected by photoperiod. Accordingly, the top:root ratio is drastically affected by photoperiod. The critical photoperiod for cambial growth was shorter than that for apical growth in all ecotypes and cambial growth cessation was delayed for several weeks compared with cessation of apical growth. A transition to formation of late-wood tracheids with thick walls and narrow lumens took place upon exposure to SD. The photoperiodic effects were significantly modified by temperature, but the critical photoperiods were only slightly changed by temperature in the range of 12 to 24°C. However, a 10-hour “night” at 4°C caused growth cessation in continuous light in four ecotypes tested. Temperature optimum for apical growth under non-limiting photoperiods (24 hours) was 21°C in all ecotypes, but with little difference among 18,21 and 24°C. The Q10 for apical growth was 3.5 in the temperature range 12 to 18°C. The growth potential as determined in 24-hour photoperiods was not significantly different among the various ecotypes except for one northern eco-type which was clearly inferior to the others. However, the growth of ecotype Steinkjer (64°N) was greatly suppressed even by the long midsummer days at 59°40′N, thus demonstrating the misleading impression one gets of the growth potential of northern ecotypes when they are moved southwards.  相似文献

Respiration and nitrogen mineralization rates of humus samples from 7 Scots pine stands located along a climatic transect across the European continent from the Pyrenees (42°40) to northern Sweden (66°08) were measured for 14 weeks under laboratory conditions at temperatures from 5 °C to 25 °C. The average Q10 values for the respiration rate ranged from about 1.0 at the highest temperature to more than 5 at 10 °C to 15 °C in the northernmost samples. In samples from more northern sites, respiration rates remained approximately constant during the whole incubation period; in the southern end of the transect, rates decreased over time. Respiration rate was positively correlated with incubation temperature, soil pH and CN ratio, and negatively with soil total N. Regressions using all these variables explained approximately 71% of the total variability in the respiration rate. There was no clear relation between the nitrogen mineralization rate and incubation temperature. Below 15 °C the N-mineralization rate did not respond to increasing temperature; at higher temperatures, significant increases were found for samples from some sites. A regression model including incubation temperature, pH, Ntot and CN explained 73% of the total variability in N mineralization. The estimated increase in annual soil respiration rates due to predicted global warming at the high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere ranged from approximately 0.07×1015 to 0.13×1015 g CO2 at 2 °C and 4 °C temperature increase scenarios, respectively. Both values are greater than the current annual net carbon storage in northern forests, suggesting a switch of these ecosystems from net sinks to net sources of carbon with global warming.  相似文献

Apical growth cessation in seedling progenies of three latitudinalecotypes and ecotype crosses of Salix pentandra L. was investigatedunder controlled growth conditions and out-of-doors. The southernecotype (59° 40' N) was characterized by late growth cessationunder short day conditions, short critical photoperiod for growthcessation, and high light sensitivity; the northern ecotype(69° 39' N) by rapid growth cessation, long critical photoperiod, and low light sensitivity. The geographically intermediate ecotype(64° 28' N) had an intermediate photoperiodic response. The hybrid progenies were, however, closer to the southern thanto the northern parent ecotype indicating a tendency to favourinheritance of southern characters. Fluctuating temperatures(21 °C/9 °C and 18 °C/9 °C) induced growth cessationin the northern ecotype but not in the other ecotypes or ecotypecrosses with the exception of a few plants of the intermediateecotype and of two hybrid progenies. The time course of apicalgrowth cessation in various progenies grown out-of-doors at69° 39' N was similar to that observed under SD conditionsexcept that the differences between the northern ecotype andthe other ecotypes and crosses were greater.  相似文献

Synopsis Diel and annual rhythms of activity and vertical distribution of a group of perch in a large laboratory tank were measured for 15 months under a natural light regime at the Arctic circle (Messaure, Swedish-Lappland, 66°42N, 20°25E). Perch were found to be mainly day-active at all seasons. The activity level was correlated with temperature and duration of activity with day length. During winter, the perch group stayed at the bottom of the tank. During the summer, the group spent about as much time in the upper part of the tank as in the lower. The behavior of perch in the laboratory is assumed roughly to mirror their behavior in the field.  相似文献

The life cycle of Laminaria abyssalis (Laminariales,Phaeophyta) in culture   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Laminaria abyssalis occurs in deep water in tropical latitudes of the Brazilian coast (19° 23 S, 38° 28 W to 22° 54 S, 42° 13 09 W). Its life cycle has been completed in the laboratory in seven months using different conditions of light and temperature. The gametophytic stage required for growth the low photon flux density of 1.2 ± 0.3 µmol m–2 s–1 and 18 °C, while the juvenile and adult sporophytes needed 15 µmol m–2 s–1 and 18 °C. The sporophytes became fertile at 23 °C. Our results showed that light and temperature are the main factors regulating the growth and life history of this species under the culture conditions tested.

Summary In the summer of 1973 in Adventdalen, spitzbergen (=78°15 lat., =17° to 15°30 long.) ecological studies of vascular plants were done. In particular, temperatures and radiation were measured over a 13-day period. In addition, plants and groups of plants were investigated according to the harvest method with respect to their biomasses and productivity. The caloric content of the plants was subsequently determined in the laboratory. In relation to other arctic areas, the area under study yielded higher productivity values, especially for grasses and grasslike plants. This is attributed to the special climatic position of the area.

The Svalbard Islands are influenced by warm Atlantic water in the south and west, and cold Arctic water in the east. Ice cover, and hence the location of the highly productive marginal ice zone, varies both intra and interannually. Part of the primary production accumulates on the bottom and is utilized by the benthos. In this study, the annual growth of the cockle Clinocardium ciliatum (Fabricius, 1780) from three sites in Svalbard waters is reported. Moffen, the site in the north (80° 01 N, 13° 48 E) is located in the northernmost areas influenced by Atlantic water. The Storfjorden site (77° 10 N, 20° 09 E) is situated in cold Arctic water masses, and the Bear Island site (74° 50 N, 18° 54 E) is in the Polar front area where Atlantic and Arctic water masses meet. Annual growth of cockles was analysed retrospectively by measuring external growth increments, which gave annual growth records from the 1970s to 1996. Shell height for age for different year classes was highest at the Storfjorden site, and lowest at Bear Island. Periods of high growth occurred at Storfjorden and Bear Island during the 1980s while the beginning of 1990s was characterized by low growth. At Moffen, growth was more variable between single years. Several factors are influencing the growth of C. ciliatum in the Svalbard area and growth cannot be coupled to only one environmental factor like ice cover.  相似文献

Relationships of vegetation, climate and soils in Shanxi plateau wereanalyzed by use of Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA). Shanxi province, located at 34°35–40°43 N, 110°15–114°33 E, was divided into a series of rectangular districts of30 latitude by 20 longitude. Areas of vegetation formations and soil types ineach district were measured carefully using fine grain on the vegetation andsoil maps of Shanxi. Climatic data were mean values of 25 years records in eachdistrict. Three data matrices of climate, vegetation and soil were combined byCCA. The results showed that the distribution of vegetation is closely relatedto the variety of climates and to soils distribution.  相似文献

Altitudinal variations in temperature and soils were analysed on a humid subtropical mountain, Mt Emei (3,099 m a.s.l., 29°34.5N, 103°21.5E), in Sichuan, China, to see how the vegetation varies with the environmental factors. As a principal finding, the coldest mean monthly temperature –1°C, rather than the warmth index of 85°C·months, emerged as the primary factor that delimited the evergreen broadleaved forest. With regard to soils, properties such as organic C, total N, available P, exchangeable K tended to increase with altitude. The highest values in organic C (26.6%), total N (1.34%) and available P (45.39 ppm) were recorded in surface soils of the mixed forest (2,210 m a.s.l.) including all three tree life forms, i.e. evergreen/deciduous broadleaved and coniferous trees. The high pH and contents of exchangeable Ca and Mg in the surface soils derived from the parent material, limestone and dolomite, between 900 and 1,200 m, where several Tertiary tree species existed. The C/N ratios of surface soils in the coniferous forests (2,500–3,099 m) were higher than those of the evergreen broadleaved forests (600–1,500 m) and the mixed forests (1,500–2,500 m).  相似文献

In this second article of a series analysing ecotypic differentiation ofthe Burr Medic (Medicago polymorpha L.),occurring along a 1000 km natural aridity gradient in centralChile, we report variations in growth potential at low temperature in relationto phenology and latitude of collecting site. In two experiments conducted inoutdoor nursey trials at Cauquenes, in the 'intermediate'(i.e., subhumid) mediterranean zone (35°58 S,72°17 W), biomass accumulation among 4 and 18 accessions ofBurrMedic, was compared. In Experiment 1, the two early-flowering accessionscollected in the arid and semiarid zones (northern Chile) showedsignificantly greater winter growth potential than the twolate-floweringaccessions from humid, south-central Chile, at five different sowingdensities. In Experiment 2, winter growth was compared, at a single sowingdensity, among 18 accessions collected in various sites along the ariditygradient. Here again, growth patterns were closely correlated to latitude ofcollecting site, with early-flowering ecotypes from the north showingsignificantly greater winter growth potential than those from the south. In athird experiment, relative growth rate, net assimilation rate and leaf arearatio and phytomass production were compared among eight accessions grown undertemperature regimes simulating natural growth conditions at Cauquenes in June(winter) and October (spring), i.e.,12°/7°Cand 18°/13°C day/night, respectively. Asbefore, northern accessions showed higher growth potential in the lowertemperature regime than those from humid and perhumid areas at more southernlatitudes. These results suggest that in arid to semiarid environments, whererainfall is erratic and unpredictable, ecotypes of Burr Medic are naturallyselected which show early-flowering and high growth capacity duringwinter, the period of the year when rainfall is most likely to occur inmediterranean-climate regions. Conversely, in humid areas, with higherrainfall predictability, and higher frequency of killing frost, ecotypes havebeen selected with longer periods of growth potential but lower winter growth.Applied and ecological aspects of the results are discussed in the context of along-term program of annual pasture improvement programme.  相似文献

Kappaphycus alvarezii (Doty) Doty from the Philippines was grown in the subtropical waters of Shikoku Is., Japan (33°2635 N, 133°2500 E). The growth rate, carrageenan yield, viscosity and gel strength were compared to values for plants cultured in the Philippines and between spring-summer, autumn-winter and winter periods in Japan. Maximum daily growth rates up to 8% occurred in Japan in October to November (autumn) while die-back occurred in winter due to low seawater temperature (15 °C). The average growth rate (ca 5%) in spring-summer to autumn was comparable to that in the Philippines. During the winter (December), the daily growth rate was approximately 1%. Gel strength, determined in a 1.5% solution in both water and 0.2% KCl, was 850 g cm-2 and 2000 g cm-2, respectively. Sol viscosity was 890 cP at 75 ° C. These values are quite similar to values obtained in the Philippines.  相似文献

Brassica napus and B. campestris are grown in Western Canada in areas subject to unseasonable frosts. At the seedling stage, cultivars of Brassica are very sensitive to frosts of -2° to-5°C, which are either lethal or delay the development of the plant. Seedlings of B. napus and B. campestris, germinated and grown at 10°C (16-h photoperiod), were treated with a foliar spray of either 100 M racemic abscisic acid (ABA), 100 M of various ABA analogs, 0.1% acetone, or were untreated. Freeze tests indicated 2°C of frost tolerance could be gained in B. napus following an application of three ABA analogs. In B. campestris, three analogs also increased freezing tolerance approximately 1.5°C. The analogs 2,3 dihydro ABA and acetylenic divinyl methyl-ABA were effective in both species. Plant fresh weight and dry weight increased in treated plants relative to control or acetone-treated plants after 3 weeks at 10°C. The effect of frost and/or analog treatment on flowering was determined in both species. In B. campestris and B. napus, a mild frost advanced flowering by approximately 2 days compared with nonfrozen control plants. The promotive effect of frost on flowering decreased with increasing severity of the frost. Several of the analog treatments, particularly 2,3 dihydro ABA and acetylenic divinyl ABA, advanced flowering by 2–3 days in both species. The benefit of these ABA analog treatments on flowering was enhanced additionally by a mild frost. Plants treated with either ABA, 2,3 dihydro ABA, 2,3 acetylenic dihydro ABA, or acetylenic divinyl ABA flowered up to 5 days earlier than control plants.  相似文献

Apical Growth Cessation and Shoot Tip Abscission in Salix   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Time course of apical shoot growth and shoot tip abortion in northern ecotypes (lat. 69°39′N, long. 18°37′E) of Salix pentandra and S. caprea have been investigated. In trees more than 15 years old growing under natural climatic conditions apical growth cessation and shoot tip abortion normally occurred in June-July when the day length still was 24 h. Application of GA3, in spring to the apex effectively delayed growth cessation and shoot tip abortion. Application of kinetin was without effect. First-year seedlings of both species grew continuously at temperatue of 9 to 24°C in 24 h photoperiod. Short days induced apical growth cessation, but two to four (S. pentandra) or three to five (S. caprea) weeks of 12 h photoperiod were required to stop the elongation growth. The results indicated that the critical photoperiod for apical growth cessation in the used ecotype of S. pentandra was 16 to 18 h at 18°C. Short days had a minor effect only on the formation of apical leaf primordia in small seedlings. Development of axillary buds and radial growth were stimulated by short days when compared with long days. Small seedlings of both species (3 to 8 cm high at the start) formed terminal buds in short days, but in large seedlings (more than about 15 cm high) apical growth cessation was accompanied by shoot tip abortion. Abscisic acid applied to the apex or through a leaf did not induce growth cessation in S. pentandra seedlings grown in continuous light. The growth retardants CCC, B-9 and Phosphon D reduced growth rate under continuous light and induced shoot tip abortion in some plants. The effect of CCC was counteracted by GA3. Apical growth cessation in short days was significantly delayed by a single GA1 application.  相似文献

The movements of nine breeding adult emperor penguins Aptenodytes forsteri from two colonies, Auster (67° 23S 64° 04E) and Taylor Glacier (67° 28S 60° 54E), were determined by satellite telemetry on their pre-moult foraging trips. While preparing for their annual moult the penguins travelled for 22–38 days and reached distances of up to 618 km from the colony. Six of the nine tracked penguins were followed to three different moult locations all to the west of their breeding colonies and near other known emperor penguins colonies, such as Kloa Point (66°38S, 59°23E) and Fold Island (67°17S, 59°23E). Sea-ice conditions changed throughout the tracking period; as the birds travelled north the sea-ice contracted south.  相似文献

A shift in the growth temperature of Streptococcus faecalis from 37 to 10°C resulted in an 18% increase in the proportion of unsaturated fatty acids. Electron spin resonance spectra of spin-labeled membranes and extracted phospholipids indicated viscosity changes consistent with the alterations in fatty acid composition. Growth temperature had no significant effect on the active transport of leucine and alanine; uptake rates assayed at 10 or 35°C were essentially the same in cells grown at either 10 or 37°C. The relative rapidity of amino acid transport, which presumably contributes to the ability of S. faecalis to thrive in cold environments, is evidently unrelated to adaptive changes in the viscosity of membrane lipids.Abbreviations doxyl 4-4-dimethyloxazolidine-N-oxyl - proxyl 2,2-disubstituted 5,5-dimethylpyrrolidine-N-oxyl  相似文献
