Crude and purified cashew tree gum were tested for their antimicrobial activity against bacteria, yeast and fungi. Their use was also evaluated as a carbon source for microbial growth. Cashew gum presented only a weak activity against Saccharomyces cerevisiae and no activity was observed against all other microorganisms tested. The possibility that removal of anacardic acid present in the raw gum during purification may explain the negative results obtained was discussed. When purified cashew tree gum was used as carbon source, only Listeria monocytogenes, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Kluyveromyces marxianus did not grow after 5 days of incubation.  相似文献

The purpose of the research was to evaluate Sterculia foetida gum as a hydrophilic matrix polymer for controlled release preparation. For evaluation as a matrix polymer; characterization of Sterculia foetida gum was done. Viscosity, pH, scanning electronmicrographs were determined. Different formulation aspects considered were: gum concentration (10–40%), particle size (75–420 μm) and type of fillers and those for dissolution studies; pH, and stirring speed were considered. Tablets prepared with Sterculia foetida gum were compared with tablets prepared with Hydroxymethylcellulose K15M. The release rate profiles were evaluated through different kinetic equations: zero-order, first-order, Higuchi, Hixon-Crowell and Korsemeyer and Peppas models. The scanning electronmicrographs showed that the gum particles were somewhat triangular. The viscosity of 1% solution was found to be 950 centipoise and pH was in range of 4–5. Suitable matrix release profile could be obtained at 40% gum concentration. Higher sustained release profiles were obtained for Sterculia foetida gum particles in size range of 76–125 μm. Notable influences were obtained for type of fillers. Significant differences were also observed with rotational speed and dissolution media pH. The in vitro release profiles indicated that tablets prepared from Sterculia foetida gum had higher retarding capacity than tablets prepared with Hydroxymethylcellulose K15M prepared tablets. The differential scanning calorimetry results indicated that there are no interactions of Sterculia foetida gum with diltiazem hydrochloride. It was observed that release of the drug followed through surface erosion and anomalous diffusion. Thus, it could be concluded that Sterculia foetida gum could be used a controlled release matrix polymer.  相似文献

The flow behavior of six species of Iranian gum tragacanth dispersions was investigated at different temperatures and ionic strengths, within a concentration range (0.05–1.5% w/w) using a controlled shear rate rheometer. The steady shear measurements showed that all of the gum dispersions had shear-thinning natures. The power law model was used to describe the rheological properties of dispersions and Arrhenius model was used to evaluate the temperature effect. Composition analysis, surface tension measurement, particle size analysis, and color measurement of all the species were also carried out. The results indicated that the six species of gum tragacanth being studied in this paper exhibited significantly different physicochemical properties. Therefore, various species of gum tragacanth can be used instead of different hydrocolloids in a wide range of applications.  相似文献

Guar gum, a galactomannan, has been reported to be an inexpensive substitute of agar for microbial culture media. However, its use is restricted probably because of (1) its highly viscous nature even at high temperatures, making dispensing of the media to Petri plates difficult and (2) lesser clarity of the guar gum gelled media than agar media due to impurities present in guar gum. To overcome these problems, three guar gum derivatives, carboxymethyl guar, carboxymethyl hydroxypropyl guar and hydroxypropyl guar, were tested as gelling agents for microbial growth and differentiation. These were also evaluated for their suitability for other routine microbiological methods, such as, enumeration, use of selective and differential media, and antibiotic sensitivity test. For evaluation purpose, growth and differentiation of eight fungi and eight bacteria grown on the media gelled with agar (1.5%), guar gum (4%) or one of the guar gum derivatives (4%), were compared. All fungi and bacteria exhibited normal growth and differentiation on all these media. Generally, growth of most of the fungi was better on guar gum derivatives gelled medium than on agar medium. The enumeration carried out for Serratia sp. and Pseudomonas aeruginosa by serial dilution and pour plate method yielded similar counts in all the treatments. Likewise, the selective succinate medium, specific for P. aeruginosa, did not allow growth of co-inoculated Bacillus sp. even if gelled with guar gum derivatives. The differential medium, Congo red mannitol agar could not differentiate between Agrobacterium tumefaciens and Rhizobium meliloti on color basis, if gelled with guar gum or any of its derivatives However, for antibiotic sensitivity tests for both Gram-positive and -negative bacteria, guar gum and its derivatives were as effective as agar.  相似文献

The river red gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh.) inhabits riparian zones and associated floodplains throughout Australia. Following changes to hydrological regime due to river regulation and prolonged drought in south‐eastern Australia, river red gum populations within the Murray–Darling Basin have suffered substantial decline. To better understand the effect of drought on river red gum genetic diversity, we examined single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) variation in 12 candidate genes among six red gum floodplain forest sites in Yanga National Park, which had experienced contrasting levels of drought and associated decline over an eight‐year period. We also examined genetic diversity using these markers in five additional river red gum populations from the Murray–Darling Basin to place genetic diversity results from Yanga in a regional context. Tree condition was significantly lower and mortality higher in the most drought affected sites; however, differences in overall genetic diversity and divergence were not detected among sites. No evidence of genetic adaptation in response to drought in this set of candidate genes was detected when differentiation at individual SNP loci was examined. While the overall condition of E. camaldulensis was strongly influenced by hydrological regime, our results suggest the evolutionary potential of floodplain forests in Yanga were not immediately impacted by population decline linked with drought and changes in hydrological regime. We propose that due to low genetic structure among populations in the region, genetic diversity of river red gums within the Murray–Darling Basin might be effectively conserved during periods of extended drought by protecting representative populations.  相似文献

Gum katira, an insoluble gum derived from the bark of Cochlospermum religiosum, has been successfully used as a gelling agent in tissue culture media for in vitro shoot formation and rooting in Syzygium cuminii and somatic embryogenesis in Albizzia lebbeck. The epicotyl segments, excised from in vitro grown seedlings of S. cuminii, developed shoots when cultured on MS medium (Murashige and Skoog, 1962), supplemented with 4% sucrose and 1 mg l–1 BA. The so-developed shoots were rooted on Knop's medium, augmented with 2% sucrose and 1 mg l–1 IAA. For somatic embryogenesis, hypocotyl segments derived from in vitro developed seedlings of A. lebbeck were cultured on B5 medium containing 2% sucrose. Media were gelled with either 3% gum or 0.9% agar. The quantitative response obtained on media fortified with either of the gelling agents was not significantly different. The media gelled with gum katira were almost as transparent as the liquid medium. However, viscosity of gum katira gelled medium was less than one-sixth of the viscosity of agar-gelled media, and therefore, shaking ofthe culture vessel often resulted in submersion of the explants. Nevertheless, even these submerged explants responded positively. To increase the firmness of the gum katira-gelled medium, various combinations of agar (0.2–0.6%) and gum (1–3%) were used. However, the viscosities of the media gelled with 3% gum katira as well as different concentrations of agar (0.2–0.6%) were lower than that of the medium containing only gum katira (3%). Moreover, the explant productivity obtained in neither of these combinations was more than those recorded on the control media, which were gelled either with 0.9% agar or 3% gum alone.  相似文献

Acacia spp. produce gum exudates, traditionally called gum arabic or gum acacia, which are widely used in the food industry such as emulsifiers, adhesives, and stabilizers. The traditional gum arabic is highly variable with average molecular weights varying from 300,000–800,000. For this reason a standardized sample was used for the present experiments, based on a specific species of gum arabic (Acacia(sen)SUPER GUMTM EM2). The literature indicates that gum arabic can be fermented by the intestinal bacteria to short chain fatty acid, particularly propionate. However, the bacteria responsible for the fermentation have not been determined. In this study, we used enrichment culture of pig cecal bacteria from the selected high molecular weight specific gum arabic of (MW 1.77 × 106). We found Prevotella ruminicola-like bacterium as a predominant bacterium that is most likely to be responsible for fermentation of the gum arabic used to propionate.  相似文献

  The effects of lactic acid, oleic acid, gum arabic and their mutual interactions, on the production of extracellular lipase and the regulation of the expression of the lipase encoding gene (lipA) in Acinetobacter calcoaceticus were investigated. Formation of extracellular lipase was measured in culture supernatants of wild-type strain BD413 and expression of the lipA gene was monitored in vivo with a chromosomal fusion of lipA to lacZ. At the level of lipA expression only oleic acid had a significant effect; it lowered expression. Neither gum arabic nor lactic acid had any effect on lipA expression. On the other hand, the yield of extracellular lipase increased 2–5 times by the addition of gum arabic, possibly due to the release of cell surface-bound lipase. In the current study, the potential of a novel combination of a galactomannan with acarbose (100 mg) was evaluated for attaining a desired hypoglycaemic effect over a prolonged period of time. Three major antidiabetic galactomannans viz., fenugreek gum, boswellia gum, and locust bean gum were selected in order to achieve a synergistic effect in the treatment alongwith retardation in drug release. In vitro studies indicated that batches containing various proportions of fenugreek gum (AF40-60) were able to control drug release for a longer duration of approximately 10–12 h. In contrast, the matrices prepared using boswellia and locust bean gum were able to sustain the release for relatively shorter durations. Drug release mainly followed first-order release kinetics owing to the highly soluble nature of the drug. In vivo study depicted a significant reduction (p < 0.001) in the postprandial blood glucose and triglyceride levels in the diabetic rats on treatment with formulation AF40. Thus, the developed system provides a better control of the postprandial glycaemic levels and it also obviates the need of conventional multiple dosing of acarbose. Furthermore, it also reduces the occurrence of side effects like diarrhea and loss of appetite.  相似文献

During the breeding season, in the western Great Victoria Desert, Western Australia, male Varanus tristis move greater daily distances (186.5 m) than females (99.7 m) and have larger activity areas (40.3 ha vs 3.7 ha). V. tristis retreat predominantly to live and dead upright Eucalyptus gongylocarpa (marble gum) trees that have hollows in their trunks and limbs. There is no observable difference between males and females in their preferred habitat, but females are found more frequently in a lesser number of preferred retreats during the breeding season.  相似文献

Aims

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of the administration of microencapsulated Lactobacillus plantarum CRL 1815 with two combinations of microbially derived polysaccharides, xanthan : gellan gum (1%:0·75%) and jamilan : gellan gum (1%:1%), on the rat faecal microbiota.

Methods and Results

A 10‐day feeding study was performed for each polymer combination in groups of 16 rats fed either with placebo capsules, free or encapsulated Lact. plantarum or water. The composition of the faecal microbiota was analysed by fluorescence in situ hybridization and temporal temperature gradient gel electrophoresis. Degradation of placebo capsules was detected, with increased levels of polysaccharide‐degrading bacteria. Xanthan : gellan gum capsules were shown to reduce the Bifidobacterium population and increase the Clostridium histolyticum group levels, but not jamilan : gellan gum capsules. Only after administration of jamilan : gellan gum‐probiotic capsules was detected a significant increase in Lactobacillus‐Enterococcus group levels compared to controls (capsules and probiotic) as well as two bands were identified as Lact. plantarum in two profiles of ileum samples.

Conclusions

Exopolysaccharides constitute an interesting approach for colon‐targeted delivery of probiotics, where jamilan : gellan gum capsules present better biocompatibility and promising results as a probiotic carrier.

Significance and Impact of Study

This study introduces and highlights the importance of biological compatibility in the encapsulating material election, as they can modulate the gut microbiota by themselves, and the use of bacterial exopolysaccharides as a powerful source of new targeted‐delivery coating material.  相似文献

The free-living lemon gum psyllid, Cryptoneossa triangula Taylor, and the lerp-forming spotted gum psyllid, Eucalyptolyma maideni Froggatt (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) are invasive pests of eucalypts in California. In 2007, Psyllaephagus parvus Riek (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) was discovered parasitizing spotted gum psyllids and Psyllaephagus perplexans Cockerell was collected from lemon gum psyllids. While neither parasitoid species was purposely introduced, presence of the parasitoids was significantly associated with reduced intensity and duration of population peaks for both psyllid species. Spring peaks were reduced more than fall peaks. We estimated minimum rates of parasitism from the ratio of mummies to live nymphs. Higher parasitism was recorded in coastal than inland locations during the spring, while parasitism was similar for coastal and inland populations in the fall. Logistic regression models suggest parasitoids were the determining factor of psyllid population densities, although physical parameters, such as irrigation, may affect psyllid or parasitoid populations.  相似文献

Xanthan gum, a microbial desiccation-resistant polysaccharide prepared commercially by aerobic submerged fermentation from Xanthomonas campestris, has been successfully used as a solidifying agent for plant tissue culture media. Its suitability as a substitute to agar was demonstrated for in vitro seed germination, caulogenesis and rhizogenesis of Albizzia lebbeck, androgenesis in anther cultures of Datura innoxia, and somatic embryogenesis in callus cultures of Calliandra tweedii. Culture media used for eliciting these morphogenic responses were gelled with either 1% xanthan gum or 0.9% agar. Xanthan gum, like agar, supported all these responses.  相似文献

Patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas) are midsized primates that feed extensively on the gum of Acacia drepanolobium and the ants are housed in swollen thorns of this Acacia. Their diet resembles that expected more of smaller bodied primates. Patas monkeys are also more like smaller bodied primates in reproducing at high rates. We sought to better understand the convergence of patas monkeys with smaller bodied primates by comparing their feeding behavior on ants and gum with that of closely related, sympatric vervets (Chlorocebus pygerythrus), and analyzing the nutrient content of the gum of A. drepanolobium and of Crematogaster mimosae, the most common ant species eaten by patas monkeys in Laikipia, Kenya. All occurrences of feeding and moving during focal animal sampling revealed that 1) patas monkeys seek A. drepanolobium gum but vervets avoid it; 2) both species open swollen thorns most often in the morning when antsare less active; 3) patas monkeys continually feed onswollen thorns and gum while moving quickly throughout the day, whereas vervets reduce their consumption of these items and their travel rate at mid‐day, and; 4) vervets eat young swollen thorns at a higher rate than patas monkeys. Patas monkeys are able to spend little time acquiring substantial amounts of energy, protein, and minerals from A. drepanolobium gum and C. mimosae ants each day. These findings, when coupled with evidence of causes of infant and adult female mortality, suggest that reproductive success of female patas monkeys is more immediately affected by illness, disease, interactions between adults and infants, and access to water than by food. A water-soluble seed gum was isolated from seed endosperm of Cassia javahikai. The acid-catalyzed fragmentation, methylation, selective enzymatic degradation and periodate oxidation suggested a heteropolymeric structure for the polysaccharide. The polysaccharide was shown to have a linear chain of β(1 → 4) linked d-mannopyranosyls units with side chains of α(1 → 6) d-galactopyranosyl units. Grafting of polyacrylamide onto the gum was performed using K2S2O8/ascorbic acid redox system in presence of Ag+ as catalyst at 35 ± 2 °C. The viscosity of the gum solution increased on grafting and the grafted gum was observed to resist biodegradation for more than 256 h. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that grafted gum was more thermally stable than native gum.  相似文献

Tamarins and marmosets are small-bodied social callitrichines. Wild callitrichines feed on exudates, such as sap and gum; particularly, marmosets are mainly gummivores, while tamarins consume gums only occasionally and opportunistically. Zoo marmosets and tamarins are usually provided with gum arabic as an alternative to the exudates normally found in the wild. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a gum feeder on the behavior and well-being of four zoo-managed callitrichines. We studied four cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus), four red-handed tamarins (S. midas), two pygmy marmosets (Cebuella pygmaea), and three Geoffroy's marmosets (Callithrix geoffroyi) housed at Parco Natura Viva (Italy). We conducted the study over two different periods, a baseline (control, without the gum feeder) and then a gum feeder (when the gum feeder was provided) period. We used continuous focal animal sampling to collect behavioral data, including durations of social and individual behaviors. We collected 240 min of observations per period per study subject, with a total of 3,120 min for all the subjects in the same period and of 6,240 min in both periods. We analyzed data by using nonparametric statistical tests. First, we found that the gum feeder promoted species-specific behaviors, such as exploration, and diminished self-directed behaviors, suggesting an enriching effect on tamarin and marmoset behavior. Moreover, in red-handed tamarins, the provision of the gum feeder reduced the performance of self-directed and abnormal behavior, specifically coprophagy. These results confirm that gum feeders are effective foraging enrichment tools for zoo marmosets and tamarins.  相似文献

Summary Plasmids pUR291 and pNZ521 containing lacZ gene, maturation protein and proteinase P genes, were transferred into X. campestris either by conjugation or by transformation. Plasmid pNZ521 was also conjugally transferred into X. campestris XMT1 a transformant carrying plasmid pUR291. All the constructed strains were evaluated for xanthan gum production in either a medium of 50% whey or the same medium supplemented with 1.5% lactose or 1.5% glucose. Mixed cultures either with transconjugants or with transformants were tested for xanthan gum production as well.  相似文献

This study explores the influence of a selection of adjuvants and of three different nozzle sizes on the foliar application of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs). Two EPN species were studied: Steinernema feltiae and Steinernema carpocapsae. A viability test of EPNs suspended in different solutions of adjuvants showed that all selected alcohol ethoxylates and an alkyl polysaccharide have an immobilising effect on the selected nematode species. In a sedimentation test, xanthan gum proved to be the only adjuvant in a broad selection, capable of delaying sedimentation of EPNs in suspension. Without xanthan gum, sedimentation of S. carpocapsae and S. feltiae was noticeable after 20 and 10 minutes, respectively. When xanthan gum (0.3 g/L) was added to the suspension, no signs of sedimentation were noticed after 20 minutes with both EPN species. An ISO 02 flat fan nozzle can clog when spraying S. carpocapsae. A deposition test determined that an ISO 04 standard flat fan nozzle provides a higher relative deposition on cauliflower leaves and is therefore a better nozzle choice than the bigger ISO 08 standard flat fan nozzle for spraying S. carpocapsae. The addition of a spreading agent improved the deposition of S. carpocapsae. Adding xanthan gum to the EPN-spreading agent mixtures did not further improve deposition.  相似文献

The dependence of the dynamic viscoelastic parameters of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), xanthan gum, and guar gum solutions on the angular frequency (ω) was compared with that of their viscosity (μ) on the shear rate (γ). In addition, the effect of these rheological properties on the maximum velocity through the pharynx, V max, as measured by the ultrasonic pulse Doppler method, was investigated. The CMC and guar gum solutions examined were taken as a dilute solution and a true polymer solution, respectively. The xanthan gum solution was taken as a weak gel above 0.5% and a true polymer solution below 0.2%. The maximum velocity, V max, of the thickener solutions correlated well with μ, the dynamic viscosity η′, and the complex viscosity η*, especially those measured at γ or ω of 20–30 s?1 (or rad/s) and above, suggesting that μ, η′, and η* are suitable indexes for care foods of the liquid type for dysphagic patients.  相似文献
