The faviid corals, Favites chinensis and Goniastrea aspera are widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific region. Both corals are hermaphroditic broadcast spawners, but G. aspera is also known to brood planula larvae in Okinawa. This study investigated the temporal settlement patterns of planula larvae of the scleractinian corals F. chinensis and G. aspera that developed from spawned gametes, and planula release and settlement of brooded larvae of G. aspera from Okinawa, Japan. Some of the broadcast-spawned larvae of F. chinensis and G. aspera had very short pre-competency periods of 1–2 and 2–3 days after spawning, and relatively long maximum settlement-competency periods of 56–63 and 63–70 days after spawning, respectively. These pre-competency periods are among the shortest reported for larvae of broadcast spawning coral species, and appear to be negatively correlated with seawater temperature. F. chinensis larvae tended to settle rapidly with 34–39% of larvae settling in the first week after spawning, while broadcast-spawned G. aspera larvae had a slower settlement pattern with 11–15% of larvae settling in the first week after spawning. Brooded larvae of G. aspera settled more rapidly, with settlement rates of 27–31% within the first 24 h and 45–65% within the first week after the start of the experiment. The production of planula larvae with rapid settlement capabilities may enable F. chinensis and G. aspera to establish and maintain populations in shallow reef sites at Okinawa. The release of the brooded planulae for up to 2 months may explain why G. aspera is locally more dominant on shallow reefs in Okinawa than F. chinensis. On a broader scale, the longer settlement competency periods of some of the broadcast-spawned larvae of these species increase their potential for longer-distance dispersal and may partly explain the wide biogeographic distribution of these species in the Indo-Pacific region. 相似文献

The effect of intraspecific contact (Contact) on egg production was examined in the massive coral Goniastrea aspera in Okinawa, subtropical Japan. The contact was non-aggressive without damaging soft tissues each other. Within Contact colonies, polyp volume, polyp fertility (%polyps with gonad), and NE/PV (number of eggs per polyp volume) were significantly smaller in marginal (Mg) polyps without direct intraspecific contact than other polyps, but no difference was found between non-marginal and Mg-Contact (marginal with direct intraspecific contact) polyps. Comparisons of non-marginal polyps (non-marginal and Mg-Contact polyps were combined in Contact colonies) between Non-Contact and Contact colonies showed that fertility and NE/PV were significantly larger in Contact colonies than in Non-Contact colonies, but polyp volume were not different significantly. Further analyses dividing colonies at Non-Contact maturation colony size (60 polyps) revealed that fertility and NE/PV were significantly larger in Contact colonies than in Non-Contact colonies only in the small colonies (<60 polyps), indicating that the intraspecific contact promoted sexual maturation at smaller colony size; one polyped Contact coral was also reproductive. The lack of correlation between polyp volume and NE/PV in the small Contact colonies, and the similarity of NE/PV in non-marginal and Mg-Contact polyps within a colony, suggest that the maturation at smaller size in Contact colonies is realized by reproductive integration of polyps at the colony level. The present results show that size-structured populations such as colonial corals may show phenotypic diversity in key demographic parameters, such as reproductive output, dependent on ecological conditions. 相似文献

Genetic variation and gene flow in the scleractinian coral Goniastrea aspera (Verrill), found around the north–south Okinawa Islands, were studied using allozyme and starch gel electrophoresis. The relative contribution of sexual and asexual reproduction to recruitment was determined. Analysis of multilocus genotypes of samples, collected at least 3 m apart, identified a high number of unique genotypes (NG) relative to the number of individuals sampled (N) (mean NG: N=0.97±0.03 [SD]), and also highly observed genotypic diversity (GO) relative to expected genotypic diversity under Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium (GE) (mean GO: GE=0.95±0.06 [SD]). These results suggest that the collected G. aspera propagated predominantly by sexual reproduction in Okinawan populations. The UPGMA grouping of five populations in the Okinawa, based on Neis unbiased genetic distance, showed two clusters that were south and north Okinawa populations. AMOVA analyses that incorporated the data of populations from the Kerama and the Ishigaki Islands detected significant FSC values among the populations within groups in analyses distinguishing north–south Okinawa, Okinawa–Kerama, and Okinawa–Kerama–Ishigaki. Significant FCT values were neither detected between north–south Okinawa nor between the Okinawa–Kerama groups. The local-recruits hypothesis, which assumes that a substantial proportion of recruits is produced locally, appears to be applicable to coral populations in the Ryukyu Archipelago. On the other hand, detection of nonsignificant FCT values indicated the presence of genetic connectivity between north–south Okinawa and Kerama–Okinawa groups. 相似文献

Two new species of zoantharians (Hexacorallia, Zoantharia, Sphenopidae), Palythoa
mizigama
sp. n. and Palythoa
umbrosa
sp. n., are described from the Ryukyu Archipelago, southern Japan. Unlike almost all other known Palythoa spp., both species are azooxanthellate and inhabit low-light environments such as floors or sides of caves, crevasses, or hollows of shallow coral reefs. The two species were initially considered to be the same species from their similar habitat environments and highly similar morphological features. However, phylogenetic analyses of nuclear internal transcribed spacer (ITS) ribosomal DNA, mitochondrial 16S ribosomal DNA, and cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences revealed that these two species have a genetically distant relationship within the genus Palythoa. Morphological characteristics, including polyp size, tentacle number, external/internal coloration, and types and sizes of cnidae were examined in this study. As a result, only tentacle coloration was found to be useful for the morphological distinction between the two species. Palythoa
mizigama possesses white tentacles with black horizontal stripes while Palythoa
umbrosa possesses white tentacles without any stripe patterns. Considering their distant phylogenetic relationship, it can be assumed that their unique yet similar morphological and ecological characteristics developed independently in each species as an example of parallel evolution. 相似文献

The elucidation of species diversity and connectivity is essential for conserving coral reef communities and for understanding the characteristics of coral populations. To assess the species diversity, intraspecific genetic diversity, and genetic differentiation among populations of the brooding coral Seriatopora spp., we conducted phylogenetic and population genetic analyses using a mitochondrial DNA control region and microsatellites at ten sites in the Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan. At least three genetic lineages of Seriatopora (Seriatopora-A, -B, and -C) were detected in our specimens. We collected colonies morphologically similar to Seriatopora hystrix, but these may have included multiple, genetically distinct species. Although sexual reproduction maintains the populations of all the genetic lineages, Seriatopora-A and Seriatopora-C had lower genetic diversity than Seriatopora-B. We detected significant genetic differentiation in Seriatopora-B among the three populations as follows: pairwise F ST = 0.064–0.116 (all P = 0.001), pairwise G′′ST = 0.107–0.209 (all P = 0.001). Additionally, only one migrant from an unsampled population was genetically identified within Seriatopora-B. Because the peak of the settlement of Seriatopora larvae is within 1 d and almost all larvae are settled within 5 d of spawning, our observations may be related to low dispersal ability. Populations of Seriatopora in the Ryukyu Archipelago will probably not recover unless there is substantial new recruitment from distant populations. 相似文献

The present study aimed to investigate the spatial structure of fish communities at juvenile and adult stages on coral reefs at Kudaka Island (Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan) and to relate spatial patterns in the structure of the fish communities to gradients in environmental variables. Diurnal visual censuses allowed us to record 2,602 juveniles belonging to 60 species and 1,543 adults belonging to 53 species from October to December 2005. The distribution of species highlighted that the juvenile community was organised into three distinct assemblages, rather than exhibiting gradual change in community structure along the cross-reef gradient. Correlations between spatial patterns of juvenile community and environmental variables revealed that the most significant factors explaining variation in community structure were coral rubble and coral slab. In contrast, the adult community was organised into one assemblage, and the most significant variation factors in community structure were depth, live coral in massive form, live coral in branched form, dead coral and sand. Overall, the present study showed that most juvenile and adult coral reef fish at Kudaka Island exhibited striking patterns in their distribution and depth and some biological factors (e.g., abundance of live coral, dead coral and coral rubble) might exert considerable influence on the distribution of fishes. 相似文献

Mechanisms governing the behavior of coral planulae are not well understood, particularly those manifesting themselves between the time when the larvae are released and when they settle. Larvae from the hermatypic coral Porites astreoides Lamarck were exposed to different levels of hydrostatic pressure—103.4, 206.9, 310.3, 413.8, and 517.1 kPa (including ambient pressure). Data were collected at stops of the above pressures for 15 min each, respectively. This was done in both an increasing sequence and a decreasing one. When exposed to increases in pressure from 103.4 kPa, larvae swam upward (negative barotaxis) in a spiraling motion. Upon exposure to decreasing pressure from 517.1 kPa, larvae moved downward (positive barotaxis), but the magnitude of the vertical movement was much less than in the case of increasing pressure. This suggests that these larvae are more sensitive to increased pressure than decreasing pressure. High variance was also observed in the responses of these larvae at both the intra- and inter-colony levels. Thus, this behavioral trait is variable within the population. The trait may be genetically based, and thus may be susceptible to alteration by natural selection, although this remains to be demonstrated. The fungiid Heliofungia actiniformis is one of the most popular scleractinian coral species in the growing live aquarium trade, with the majority of specimens
originating in Indonesia. Details on population connectivity may potentially provide important information with regards to
harvest management efforts. Genetic structure was examined, using ribosomal ITS1, 5.8S and partial ITS2 sequences on a small
scale among populations in the Spermonde Archipelago, South Sulawesi (up to 65 km distance, Φst = 0.09), and on a large scale throughout the Indo-Malay Archipelago (up to 2,900 km distance, Φst = 0.26). Significant genetic structuring was found at both scales. Within the Spermonde Archipelago isolation by distance
as well as local oceanographic features shaped patterns of genetic connectivity. On the large scale, the data revealed genetically
distinct populations in Tomini Bay, New Guinea and the Thousand Islands near Jakarta, and a lack of genetic differentiation
among populations lying close to or directly in the path of the Indonesian throughflow: from the central Visayas to the Flores
Sea (Φct = 0.32). Whilst the influence of both historical and present day processes on genetic structuring of H. actiniformis populations was revealed, large scale results further emphasised the importance of oceanographic dynamics on larval dispersal
patterns in this species. Potential for larval input from surrounding populations, and the increased vulnerability of upstream

Self-compatible, hermaphroditic marine invertebrates have the potential to self-fertilize in the absence of mates or under sperm-limited conditions, and outcross when sperm is available from a variety of males. Hence, many hermaphroditic marine invertebrates may have evolved mixed-mating systems that involve facultative self-fertilization. Such mixed-mating strategies are well documented for plants but have rarely been investigated in animals. Here, I use allozyme markers to make estimates of selfing from population surveys of reef slope and reef flat sites, and contrast this with direct estimates of selfing from progeny-array analysis, for the brooding coral Seriatopora hystrix. Consistent heterozygote deficits previously reported for S. hystrix suggests that inbreeding (including the extreme of selfing) may be common in this species. I detected significant levels of inbreeding within populations (F(IS)=0.48) and small but significant differentiation among all sites (F(ST)=0.04). I detected no significant differentiation among habitats (F(HT)=0.009) though among site differentiation did occur within the reef slope habitat (F(SH)=0.06), but not within the reef flat habitat (F(SH)=0.015). My direct estimates of outcrossing for six colonies and their progeny from a single reef flat site revealed an intermediate value (t(m) (+/-s.d.)=0.53+/-0.20). Inbreeding coefficients calculated from progeny arrays (F(e)=0.31) were similar to indirect estimates based on adult genotype frequencies for that site (F(IS)=0.38). This study confirms that the mating system of this brooding coral is potentially variable, with both outcrossing and selfing. 相似文献

A new armoured marine tardigrade, Nodarctus hallucis gen. et sp. nov., is described from specimens collected from sandy beaches of Haterumajima, Ishigakijima and Okinawajima Islands, Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan. It is a member of the rare family Renaudarctidae, which is characterized by a stocky body with dorsal and ventral plates and stumpy legs with digits, claws and accessory filaments. However, the collected animals have prominent characters that differ from the two known species of the family: subdivided dorsal segmental plates I–III lacking lateral processes, an acute caudal spike, indented sensory plates, short spikes and peculiar papillae on legs I–III, basal spikes of legs IV and only two digits on legs IV. These differences justify the erection of a new genus and species for the animal. External characters, hemipenial morphology, karyotype, and reproductive mode were examined for the three subspecies of the endemic Ryukyu natricine, Amphiesma pryeri . Results revealed that populations of the Yaeyama Group, currently regarded as comprising a subspecies, A. p. ishigakiense , have several unique features such as the brownish ground colour of head, termination of sulcus spermaticus in the crotch between apical lobes of the hemipenis, terminal location of centromeres in the largest microchromosome pair, and the viviparous mode of reproduction. In the other populations, ground colour of head is black or dark greyish tan; sulcus spermaticus terminates near the tip of the left lobe of the hemipenis; the largest microchromosome pair is metacentric; and the reproductive mode is oviparous. Of these, however, the Miyakojima population, which currendy consists solely of the subspecies, A. p. concelarum , differs from the nominotypical subspecies from the central Ryukyus in having only 94–102 subcaudal scales and telocentric W chromosome; A. p. pryeri has 112–130 subcaudal scales and submetacentric W chromosomes. These strongly suggest that the two subspecies have also substantially diverged from each other, constituting distinct evolutionary lineages. We thus accord full-species status to each of pryeri, concelarum and ishigakiense , and revise their definitions on the basis of the present results. A dichotomous key to the Japanese species and subspecies of Amphiesma is provided. 相似文献

Okinawandros goldbergi n. gen., n. sp. and Ataronema sekii n. gen., n. sp. (Nematoda: Pharyngodonidae) are described from rhacophorid frogs of the Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan. Okinawandros n. gen. resembles Batracholandros Freitas et Iba?ez, 1965 and Synodontisia Petter, Vassiliades et Troncy, 1972 but is readily distinguished from the former in lacking laterally situated genital papillae and by having anteriorly directed vagina and from the latter by having operculated eggs and lacking a spicule. Ataronema n. gen. most closely resembles Parathelandros Baylis, 1930 but is readily distinguished because the posterior pair of caudal papillae is not rosette shaped and the eggs are not operculated. Two new species of didemnid ascidians, Diplosoma ooru sp. nov. and Diplosoma simileguwa sp. nov., are described from coral reefs on Okinawajima (Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan). These two species form green colonies, having a symbiotic association with a prokaryotic alga Prochloron sp. The former species was found at the reef edges in the subtidal zone and the latter was found in a shallow reef lagoon. In these species, the colonies are thinner and the zooids are smaller than those of any other Prochloron-bearing Diplosoma species so far described. Moreover, each of the present new species has a unique combination of stigmatic numbers: 5 stigmata in the first and third rows, 6 in the second row, and 4 in the fourth in D. ooru; 4 stigmata in the first and third rows, 5 in the second row, and 3 in the fourth in D. simileguwa. In both of the new species, the retractor muscle emerges from the underside of the thorax. Larval morphology of D. ooru is also described. 相似文献
