Several years after the deposition of fallout radiocesium, the maximal activity of this radionuclide will not remain at the soil surface but be found rather in deeper layers. In order to estimate the total radiocesium contamination of a large area and the resulting γ-dose rate by in-situ spectrometry, it is necessary to approximate the vertical distribution of this radionuclide by an analytical function. Observations at ten undisturbed grassland soils in Bavaria, Germany, show that the resulting depth distributions can be approximated closely by a three-parameter Lorentz function. This function characterises the observed distributions in all three critical sections, i.e. the surface layer, the distribution around the maximal concentration, and the tail at greater depth. It is also shown that the observed total activity per unit area of the soil due to 137Cs agrees very well with the corresponding value obtained from the integrated Lorentz function. The two coefficients of the Lorentz function, which characterise the location (depth) and width of the maximum in the activity distribution, are shown to be correlated. In part II of this study, it will be shown how the parameters of the Lorentz function can also be obtained by in-situ γ-ray spectrometry. As a result, it is possible to use in-situ γ-ray spectrometry to obtain the total 137Cs activity per unit area also for sites where the vertical distribution of this radionuclide in the soil is no longer exponential. Accounting for CO2 fluxes by determining changes in stocks of soil carbon (C) as a result of land use change is an option for complying nations under the Kyoto Protocol. The 1996 IPCC guidelines for C accounting recommend that soil C stocks to a depth of 30 cm be used in such accounting. However, the soil bulk density often changes with land use and the soil C per unit ground area to a fixed depth will also change even without any change in the mass fraction of C in dry soil. This problem will generally arise when soil C accounting is taken to a fixed depth (i.e. uses ‘spatial coordinates’). For accuracy in determining the land use change effects on soil C, soil sampling should be referred to a fixed dry soil mass per unit ground area (i.e. use ‘cumulative mass coordinates’). There has been intermittent literature‐discussion about this issue over several decades. Methods to accomplish C accounting on a mass coordinate basis, none of them accurate or efficient, have been suggested. Here, we propose a simple, accurate methodology for determining soil C stocks using cumulative mass coordinates, which does not involve repeat sampling trips, nominal specification of the location of boundaries between soil horizons, or independent sampling for determining soil bulk densities. Each core is taken a little (say 10 cm) below the nominal mass/depth required and the retrieved core is sliced into two at a point a little above the nominal mass/depth (say 10 cm above). An accurate determination of the depth of the core or slice is not needed, but an accurate determination of the dry mass of soil above and below the slice‐point is required. Linear interpolation between these two measurements is then used to estimate the cumulative soil C per unit ground area to the target dry soil mass per unit ground area. Even though this method eliminates the need for reporting soil bulk densities for C accounting, it is urged that the bulk densities and density changes still be routinely reported. This is because such information is of fundamental importance for understanding and predicting the movement of fluids and substances carried in them within the soil and between the soil and the environment. Hence, these data are likely to be of fundamental importance in developing our future understanding and predictive capacity of soil C changes with land use change.  相似文献

树木细根具有高度空间异质性,确定合理的细根取样策略是林木细根研究的前提。通过在福建省三明米槠天然常绿阔叶林内随机钻取96个土芯,分析细根生物量和形态特征的空间变异特征,并估计各指标所需的取样数量。结果表明:(1)随着径级增加,细根各指标变异系数增大,相应的取样数量增加;(2)随着土壤深度增加,单位面积细根生物量变异程度和相应的取样数量均增加。在置信水平为95%、精度为80%的条件下,直径为0-1 mm和1-2 mm的细根,分别采集16和42个样品可以满足测定单位面积细根生物量,采集17和31个样品可以满足测定单位面积细根长度,采集25和33个样品可以满足测定单位面积细根表面积。Shapiro-Wilk检验表明,除表层土壤0-1 mm细根单位面积生物量符合正态分布外,其余细根生物量和形态指标数据均不符合正态分布。研究结果为亚热带常绿阔叶林细根的合理取样提供了科学依据。  相似文献

Intertidal flats are frequently colonised by microphytobenthos (MPB) assemblages that form transient biofilms at the sediment surface which are responsible for large fractions of estuarine primary production. The large spatio-temporal variability in MPB biomass distribution in concert with the fact that tidal flats can cover many km2 makes the use of remote sensing particularly useful in assessing MPB distribution. Water content, sediment type and MPB vertical migration are variables that affect the relationship between ground truth measurements and remote sensing of benthic chlorophyll. The effect of chlorophyll depth distribution (top 2 mm) on the relationship between benthic chlorophyll and several remote sensing indices (NDVI, PI, R562/R647, derivative indices and PAM fluorescence) was investigated over a 2 year sampling period at 6 sites (Tagus estuary, Portugal). Additionally, the effect of the dark adaptation time required to measure the minimum fluorescence parameter (F0) was also tested. Sediment type strongly affected MPB depth distribution with muddy sites showing a strong negative exponential decay in chlorophyll with distance from the surface while sandy sites had a homogenous distribution over the same scale (2 mm). Chlorophyll content (mass per unit mass, μg g− 1) in the top 2 mm was better correlated with remote sensing indices than concentration (mass per unit volume, mg m− 3), both for NDVI (0.72 vs. 0.45) and for PAM fluorescence (0.70 vs. 0.55). Separating the data by transect increased the correlation values in all situations. A fitted model of chlorophyll depth distribution showed that the effect of asymmetrical chlorophyll depth distribution was stronger on the correlations between chlorophyll concentration and NDVI than on chlorophyll content and NDVI (0.46-2 mm vs. 0.74-125 μm, muddy site) the same was valid for fluorescence (0.66-2 mm vs. 0.92-125 μm, muddy site). Dark adapting the samples for more than 5 min did not result in any significant difference in the relationship between F0 and chlorophyll a. The residuals from the regression of chlorophyll content on NDVI were positively correlated (0.7) with the mass per unit of mass of sediment < 63 μm and negatively (− 0.6) with chlorophyll concentration, this indicates that if no correction is performed to account for chlorophyll depth distribution both units will be strongly affected by the mass of < 63 μm particles. The results demonstrate that although expressing chlorophyll a as concentration is generally a better option for ground truth measurements care should be taken to account for chlorophyll depth distribution since strong asymmetries within the sampling depth can introduce large errors.  相似文献

Since the reactor accident of Chernobyl, cesium depth profiles and nuclide-specific kerma rates in air have been determined for various grassland sites in south Bavaria and in Ukraine. The sites are described by soil characteristics, annual precipitation, distance from release point, mode of deposition, and activity per unit area. The effects of surface roughness and migration of cesium into the soil on the kerma rate in air over grasslands was determined by two methods. The kerma rates in air obtained by the evaluations of in situ gamma-ray spectrometry results and of measured activity distributions in the soil showed only negligible differences for the observation period of 6 years after deposition. For the sites in Ukraine the kerma rate in air per activity per unit area was found to be systematically 40% higher than in Bavaria. The results from Bavaria on the attenuation of the kerma rate and a data set, including experiences from the weapons test fallout, are analytically approximated as a function of time up to 25 years after deposition.  相似文献

A new method is introduced for deriving radiocesium soil contaminations and kerma rates in air from in situ gamma-ray spectrometric measurements. The approach makes use of additional information about gamma-ray attenuation given by the peak-to-valley ratio, which is the ratio of the count rates for primary and forward scattered photons. In situ measurements are evaluated by comparing the experimental data with the results of Monte Carlo simulations of photon transport and detector response. The influence of photons emitted by natural radionuclides on the calculation of the peak-to-valley ratio is carefully analysed. The new method has been applied to several post-Chernobyl measurements and the results agreed well with those of soil sampling.  相似文献

The activity of single motor units contributing to small tonic isometric contractions in human muscle at different muscular lengths was analyzed. The form of motor unit firing patterns shows that the interspike intervals compose independent sequences with about a 10% coefficient of variation and have a gamma distribution. The variability and the distribution shape curves show that as the mean interval decreases the variance also decreases and the interval density function becomes more symmetric. More significant is the fact that the form of the firing pattern remains unchanged when a motor unit has the same mean interval but with the muscle at different lengths. Comparison of these facts with experimental data from neuron models and cat motoneurons indicates that in the human the only relevant input-output relationship in motoneurons is that the net excitation adjusts the firing rate.  相似文献

Knowing the distribution of fitness effects (DFE) of new mutations is important for several topics in evolutionary genetics. Existing computational methods with which to infer the DFE based on DNA polymorphism data have frequently assumed that the DFE can be approximated by a unimodal distribution, such as a lognormal or a gamma distribution. However, if the true DFE departs substantially from the assumed distribution (e.g., if the DFE is multimodal), this could lead to misleading inferences about its properties. We conducted simulations to test the performance of parametric and nonparametric discretized distribution models to infer the properties of the DFE for cases in which the true DFE is unimodal, bimodal, or multimodal. We found that lognormal and gamma distribution models can perform poorly in recovering the properties of the distribution if the true DFE is bimodal or multimodal, whereas discretized distribution models perform better. If there is a sufficient amount of data, the discretized models can detect a multimodal DFE and can accurately infer the mean effect and the average fixation probability of a new deleterious mutation. We fitted several models for the DFE of amino acid-changing mutations using whole-genome polymorphism data from Drosophila melanogaster and the house mouse subspecies Mus musculus castaneus. A lognormal DFE best explains the data for D. melanogaster, whereas we find evidence for a bimodal DFE in M. m. castaneus.  相似文献

本文提出一种利用δ声波场和近红外光漫射理论实现球形乳腺肿瘤精确定位的新颖思路。通过构建一个δ波形的声波场,作用到乳腺组织中从而改变组织内某一点的光学特性参数,这种改变对组织表面光分布的影响可以视为微扰,通过控制其作用点在深度上扫描,测得一系列乳腺组织表面一级微扰光分布,从中提取肿瘤与正常组织的差异特性,实现乳腺肿瘤的精确定位和大小测定。该方法具有广泛的临床医学应用前景,为乳腺癌的早期检测提供一种全新思路。  相似文献

Varied evidence from the known depth correlated distribution of benthic shelly facies communities in the Ordovician and Silurian clearly shows that graptolite taxonomic diversity increased from the nearshore regions to the shelf margin regions, as well as into the deeper portions of epicontinental basinal areas. We then consider a method for determining the depth distribution of individual graptolite taxa. This method depends on correlating the first appearance of graptolite taxa as one departs from shoreline in terms of the underlying benthos, arrayed in benthic assemblages. The first appearance departing from shoreline corresponds with the upper depth limits of each taxon in terms of the underlying depth indicated by the underlying, associated benthos. The depth of maximum abundance for each taxon should correspond to that point in the increasing relative abundance of that taxon where relative increase in abundance ceases. The lower depth limit of each taxon should correspond to that point on the relative abundance curve where increase in total relative abundance ceases.Using information about the stratigraphic ages indicated by the graptolite faunas, zone-by-zone, combined with that provided by the communities present within the associated and formerly underlying benthic assemblages should provide a more refined stratigraphic zonation than that obtained without combining both.  相似文献

A finite element code was used for investigating the effect of some relevant characteristics of a phytoremediation project (crop type and density, presence of an irrigation system, soil capping and root depth). The evolution of the plume of contamination of Cd2+, Pb2+, and Zn2+ was simulated taking into account reactive transport and root processes. The plant contaminant uptake model was previously calibrated using data from greenhouse experiments. The simulations adopted pedological and climatological data representative of a sub-tropical environment. Although the results obtained were specific for the proposed scenario, it was observed that, for more mobile contaminants, poor water conditions favor stabilization but inhibit plant extraction. Otherwise an irrigation system that decreases crop water stress had an opposite effect. For less mobile contaminants, the remediation process did not have appreciable advantages. Despite its simplifying assumptions, particularly about contaminant sorption in the soil and plant system, the numerical analysis provided useful insight for the phytoextraction process important in view of field experiments.  相似文献

Covariate measurement error in regression is typically assumed to act in an additive or multiplicative manner on the true covariate value. However, such an assumption does not hold for the measurement error of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort Study (WSCS). The true covariate is the severity of SDB, and the observed surrogate is the number of breathing pauses per unit time of sleep, which has a nonnegative semicontinuous distribution with a point mass at zero. We propose a latent variable measurement error model for the error structure in this situation and implement it in a linear mixed model. The estimation procedure is similar to regression calibration but involves a distributional assumption for the latent variable. Modeling and model-fitting strategies are explored and illustrated through an example from the WSCS.  相似文献

Accurately measuring biodiversity is essential for successful conservation planning. Due to biodiversity’s complexity, specific taxa are often chosen as indicators of patterns of diversity as a whole. Such taxa can include vegetation which can inform conservation decisions by demarcating land units for management strategies. For land units to be useful, they must be accurate spatial representations of the species assemblages present on the landscape. In this study, we determined whether land units classified by vegetative communities predicted the community structure of a diverse group of invertebrates—the ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae). Specifically, that (1) land units of the same classification contained similar carabid species assemblages and that (2) differences in species structure were correlated with variation in land unit characteristics, including canopy and ground cover, vegetation structure, tree density, leaf litter depth, and soil moisture. The study site, the Braidwood Dunes and Savanna Nature Preserve in Will County, Illinois is a mosaic of differing land units. Carabid beetles were sampled continuously with pitfall trapping for 1 year (excluding winter) from September 2011 to November 2011 and from March 2012 to September 2012. Land unit characteristics were measured in July 2012. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) ordinated the land units by their carabid species assemblages into five ecologically meaningful clusters: disturbed, marsh, prairie, restoration, and savanna. The subset of land unit characteristics with the highest rank correlation with the NMDS ordination included soil moisture, leaf litter depth, percentage of canopy cover, and percentage of grass ground cover. Land units classified by vegetative communities effectively represented carabid species assemblages.  相似文献

Matrix population models are a standard tool for studying stage‐structured populations, but they are not flexible in describing stage duration distributions. This study describes a method for modeling various such distributions in matrix models. The method uses a mixture of two negative binomial distributions (parametrized using a maximum likelihood method) to approximate a target (true) distribution. To examine the performance of the method, populations consisting of two life stages (juvenile and adult) were considered. The juvenile duration distribution followed a gamma distribution, lognormal distribution, or zero‐truncated (over‐dispersed) Poisson distribution, each of which represents a target distribution to be approximated by a mixture distribution. The true population growth rate based on a target distribution was obtained using an individual‐based model, and the extent to which matrix models can approximate the target dynamics was examined. The results show that the method generally works well for the examined target distributions, but is prone to biased predictions under some conditions. In addition, the method works uniformly better than an existing method whose performance was also examined for comparison. Other details regarding parameter estimation and model development are also discussed.  相似文献

For pores which can adopt only the open and closed states, the influence of the amplitude distribution of the single-pore conductance (gamma, open state) on the covariance function is derived. It is shown that reliable mean values of gamma (E(gamma)) can be derived from noise analysis only if the variance in the amplitude distribution (sigma gamma (2)) is known. In the past, sigma gamma (2) was set always to zero, leading to an overestimation of E(gamma). In the case of gramicidin-doped lipid bilayer membranes, this overestimation amounts to as much as 15% of the true value of E(gamma).  相似文献

在棉花生长旺季,将冠层按高度分多层测定了田间叶片含氮量和叶片净光合速率对光合有效辐射通量密度的响应(光响应曲线,Pn-PPFD response curve)及相应的生物指标.结果表明,各层叶片氮含量与光合作用关系密切,各层平均值大小依次为上层>中层>下层,对应层叶片的最大净光合速率Pmax、表观暗呼吸速率Rd、光补偿点LCP及光饱和点LSP均从上到下依次递减,与氮含量分布一致,而表观光合量子效率AQY则略有不同;氮含量的指数衰减系数 kn =0.762(R2=0.593),根据观测结果,棉田叶片氮含量(N)空间分布可以用相对累积叶面积指数(Lc/Lt)为自变量的指数方程来模拟,从而为建立光合作用机理模型与进行生产力奠定基础.  相似文献

A relatively simple method is proposed for the estimation of parameters of stage-structured populations from sample data for situation where (a) unit time survival rates may vary with time, and (b) the distribution of entry times to stage 1 is too complicated to be fitted with a simple parametric model such as a normal or gamma distribution. The key aspects of this model are that the entry time distribution is approximated by an exponential function withp parameters, the unit time survival rates in stages are approximated by anr parameter exponential polynomial in the stage number, and the durations of stages are assumed to be the same for all individuals. The new method is applied to four Zooplankton data sets, with parametric bootstrapping used to assess the bias and variation in estimates. It is concluded that good estimates of demographic parameters from stagefrequency data from natural populations will usually only be possible if extra information such as the durations of stages is known.  相似文献

The origins of early waves recorded from the scalp of man after stimulation of the infraorbital nerve have been investigated by simultaneous recording from the scalp and from the trigeminal pathway in patients undergoing thermocoagulation rhizotomy. It has been found that the surface-recorded W1, W2 and W3 waves correspond respectively to the activity of the point of entry of the maxillary nerve into the gasserian ganglion, the point of entry of the trigeminal root into the pons and the presynaptic portion of the trigeminal spinal tract.It is remarked that depth recording during surgery may provide useful information about the positioning of the thermocoagulation electrode.  相似文献

Anion exchange (AEX) chromatography in the flow-through mode is a widely employed purification process for removal of process/product-related impurities and exogenous/endogenous viruses from monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). The pH of the mobile phase for AEX chromatography is typically set at half a unit below the isoelectric point (pI) of each mAb (i.e., pI − 0.5) or lower and, in combination with a low ionic strength, these conditions are usually satisfactory for both the recovery of the mAb and removal of impurities. However, we have recently encountered a tight binding of mAb1 to AEX resins under these standard chromatographic conditions. This anomalous adsorption behavior appears to be an effect of the asymmetric charge distribution on the surface of the mAb1. We found that mAb1 did not bind to the AEX resins if the mobile phase has a much lower pH and higher ionic strength, but those conditions would not allow adequate virus removal. We predicted that the use of membrane adsorbers might provide effective mAb1 purification, since the supporting matrix has a network structure that would be less susceptible to interactions with the asymmetric charge distribution on the protein surface. We tested the Natriflo HD-Q AEX membrane adsorber under standard chromatographic conditions and found that mAb1 flowed through the membrane adsorber, resulting in successful separation from murine leukemia virus. This AEX membrane adsorber is expected to be useful for process development because mAbs can be purified under similar standard chromatographic conditions regardless of their charge distributions.  相似文献

Gene silencing induced by short interfering RNA (siRNA) has proven to be useful in genomic research and has great potential for therapeutic applications; however, siRNAs are not readily bioavailable. Cationic liposomes offer effective protection of drug product from nucleases and enable distribution to desired target organs. The amount of siRNA in the formulation must be determined accurately. We have developed a stability-indicating, ion-pair, reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography method to separate and accurately quantitate two siRNA duplexes in a liposome without sample pretreatment. The gradient mobile phase system consisted of 385 mM hexafluoro-2-propanol, 14.5 mM triethylamine, and 5% methanol (mobile phase A) and 385 mM hexafluoro-2-propanol, 14.5 mM triethylamine, and 90% methanol (mobile phase B). The column used was an XBridge C18 column (50 × 2.1 mm i.d., 2.5 μm particle size), and separation was performed at 60 °C. Quantitation was achieved with ultraviolet (UV) detection at 260 nm. Linearity was established for the single strands of both siRNA duplexes for concentrations ranging from 10 to 110 μg/ml. Accuracy of the method was determined by replicate analysis (n = 5) at four concentrations (R> 0.996 and relative standard deviations [RSDs] of 1-4%). The use of an ion-pairing reagent that is compatible with mass spectrometry detection makes this method amenable to liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) impurity profiling.  相似文献
