1. We studied stress responses and metal exchange (uptake and loss) kinetics in the aquatic moss Fontinalis antipyretica Hedw. following transplant (in plastic mesh bags) to clean and metal-contaminated river sites and under laboratory conditions. 2. The stress response (estimated on the basis of chlorophyll:phaeophytin ratio) was more pronounced, and the moss took longer to recover, following transplant to heavily contaminated sites. 3. Metal uptake over the 28 day exposure period was predicted well by a two-compartment kinetic model: uptake velocity was initially high and gradually declined, with metal concentration in the moss showing a tendency to reach an equilibrium with metal concentration in the water. Mean uptake rate, time to reach equilibrium and metal concentration in moss at equilibrium all increased with increasing metal concentration in the water. 4. Bioconcentration constants calculated on the basis of our data rank the metals studied in the order Zn < Ni < Co < Cu < Pb < Cd. 5. Following retransplant of mosses to a clean site, metal loss was not predicted well by a passive exchange mode of the above type; instead, two phases (rapid and slow) were apparent. Loss rates during both phases, and proportion of metal load lost during the rapid phase, were proportional to the concentration of metal in the moss at the start of the recuperation trial. 6. We present nomograms to allow estimation of severity of contamination on the basis of metal concentration in moss and duration of transplant.  相似文献

Using genetic markers, we investigated the genetic structure of three clonal aquatic moss species, Calliergon megalophyllum Mikut., Fontinalis antipyretica Hedw. and F. hypnoides Hartm. on two scales: among populations in a connected lake system (large‐scale spatial genetic structure) and among individuals within populations (fine‐scale spatial genetic structure). Mean genetic diversities per population were 0.138, 0.247 and 0.271, respectively, and total diversities equalled 0.223, 0.385 and 0.421, respectively. Relative differentiation levels (FST values of 0.173, 0.280 and 0.142, respectively) were significant but showed that there is a moderate amount of gene flow taking place within the lake system connected with narrow streams. Bayesian STRUCTURE analysis provided some indication that the direction of water flow influences population genetic structuring in the studied aquatic mosses. We propose that dispersal leading to gene flow in C. megalophyllum, F. antipyretica and F. hypnoides takes place both along water via connecting streams and by animal vectors, such as waterfowl. Nevertheless, the slight genetic structuring pattern along the direction of water flow suggests that dispersal of shoots or their fragments along water is a means of dispersal in these mosses. The absence of sexual reproduction and spores may have caused the observed spatial genetic structure within populations, including aggregations of similar genotypes (clones or closely related genotypes) at short distances in populations otherwise showing an isolation by distance effect. Regardless of the results pointing to the dominance of vegetative propagation, it is impossible to completely rule out the potential role of rare long‐distance spore dispersal from areas where the species are fertile.  相似文献

Summary Frost resistance, measured via the photosynthetic capacity after freeze-thaw treatment, and concentrations of sucrose, glucose and fructose of thalli of seven species of Bryidae and one species of Marchantiidae were determined from January to March and June to September, respectively. A distinct increase in cold tolerance from summer to winter was found in Polytrichum formosum Hedw., Atrichum undulatum (Hedw.) P. Beauv., Plagiomnium undulatum (Hedw.) Kop., Plagiomnium affine (Funck) Kop., Mnium hornum Hedw. and Pellia epiphylla (L.) Corda. While the frost resistance of the musci differed in summer and winter by 15° to more than 25° C, the hardening capacity of the thalloid liverwort was comparably low. Except in Mnium hornum, the increase in frost hardiness was accompanied by rise of the sucrose concentration in the cells, but insignificant changes in glucose and fructose contents. In contrast, Brachythecium rutabulum (Hedw.) B.S.G. and Hypnum cupressiforme Hedw. already exhibited high frost tolerances in summer, which coincided with high sucrose levels in the tissue, comparable to those found in other musci during the winter. Highly frost-resistant musci had total sugar concentrations around 90–140 mM, of which at least 80% and often more than 90% was sucrose. Artificial degradation of sucrose during exposure of mosses to higher temperatures resulted in a decline in cold hardiness. The results signify that the concentration of sugars, mainly of sucrose, may be important for the frost tolerance of bryophytes.  相似文献

All bryophytes evolved desiccation tolerance (DT) mechanisms during the invasion of terrestrial habitats by early land plants. Are these DT mechanisms still present in bryophytes that colonize aquatic habitats? The aquatic bryophyte Fontinalis antipyretica Hedw. was subjected to two drying regimes and alterations in protein profiles and sucrose accumulation during dehydration and rehydration were investigated. Results show that during fast dehydration, there is very little variation in protein profiles, and upon rehydration proteins are leaked. On the other hand, slow dehydration induces changes in both dehydration and rehydration protein profiles, being similar to the protein profiles displayed by the terrestrial bryophytes Physcomitrella patens (Hedw.) Bruch and Schimp. and, to what is comparable with Syntrichia ruralis (Hedw.) F. Weber and D. Mohr. During dehydration there was a reduction in proteins associated with photosynthesis and the cytoskeleton, and an associated accumulation of proteins involved in sugar metabolism and plant defence mechanisms. Upon rehydration, protein accumulation patterns return to control values for both photosynthesis and cytoskeleton whereas proteins associated with sugar metabolism and defence proteins remain high. The current results suggest that bryophytes from different ecological adaptations may share common DT mechanisms.  相似文献

Aquatic mosses and sediments were monitored along Topolnitsa River Basin (Bulgaria), copper-producing and mining region. Six mosses were applied as biomonitors: Bryum turbinatum, Fontinalis antipyretica, Leptodictyum riparium, Platyhypnidium riparioides, Rhizomnium punctatum and Sciuro-hypnum plumosum. Background levels were determined for both plants and fine fraction of sediments collected from an unpolluted site. Contamination factors (CFs) and metal pollution index at each site were presented. The highest sediment enrichment with toxic elements was found in Zlatishka River. Strong increase above background levels showed all 13 heavy metals and toxic elements in biomonitors from stations at Zlatishka and Pirdopska rivers. The two moss species adopted as biomonitors for the first time – Bryum turbinatum and Rhizomnium punctatum – showed high CFs for several heavy metals and contributed to chemical pollution pattern assessment. The parallel use of mosses and sediments in the monitoring study, as well as the applied statistical tools, led to the conclusion that mosses as higher plants revealed pollution patterns not detected by sediments. Results also showed that in a seriously contaminated aquatic environment, which requires rapid assessment, different moss species can be applied for water-monitoring purposes to present preliminary picture of pollution patterns and to direct further studies.  相似文献

Supplying polluted river water to nature reserves in The Netherlands often leads to eutrophication of the reserve. The eutrophication can be caused directly by the high nutrient input (external eutrophication) or indirectly by altering nutrient availability due to changes in nutrient desorption or mineralization. This paper investigates the potential of a ditch system that is tested for its potential to improve the water quality of polluted river water prior to supplying to the wet meadow reserve De Meije in The Netherlands. Concentrations of the macro-ions chloride, sulphate, calcium and bicarbonate in the polluted river water were much higher than original background values, measured in the reserve. During transport of the river water through the ditch system, no decline was observed in the concentrations of these macro-ions. The phosphorus concentration, however, decreased along the flow path and was significantly negatively correlated with the distance from the inlet point. High phosphorus removal occurred in a stretch of the ditch system where submerged and free floating species such as Fontinalis antipyretica and Lemna trisulca were dominant. The N: P ratio of F. antipyretica was especially low (N : P < 5) at sampling stations where high phosphorus concentrations were measured. The high N: P ratio indicated a luxury consumption of phosphorus. With decreasing phosphorus concentrations, the N: P ratio of F. antipyretica increased to a maximum of N: P = 25. The nutrient budget of the ditch system showed that supply of river water was the main input of phosphorus (12 kg P) whereas the main inputs of nitrogen of the ditch system were atmospheric deposition (66 kg N) and leaching from the wet meadows (44 kg N). For both nutrients, harvesting the aquatic vegetation in September was the main removal mechanism from the ditch system with 92 kg of nitrogen (80% of the annual input N) and 14 kg of phosphorus (95% of the annual P input) removed. It was concluded that the ditch system with aquatic vegetation could successfully remove nutrients from polluted river water. The concentrations of macro-ions, however, are not influenced by the ditch systems and internal eutrophication due to changes in adsorption or mineralization may still occur.  相似文献

The changes taking place at seven stream and river sites over a 14-month period were followed for the following:
  1. % cover of Rhynchostegium riparioides;
  2. relative abundance of Rhynchostegium as part of the whole plant community and, where present, also Amblystegium riparium and Fontinalis antipyretica;
  3. 18 water chemistry variables;
  4. concentrations of nine metals in 2-cm tips of Rhynchostegium at all sites and of Amblystegium and Fontinalis at one site each.
A decrease in the amounts of these mosses occurred in winter at most sites, the effect being most pronounced with Amblystegium. Nevertheless the majority of plants which remained had healthy shoots suitable for sampling for metal analysis at all times of year. There were marked temporal changes in the concentrations of metals in the 2-cm tips at each site, but few of these appeared to be related to seasonal events. The most plausible was for Pb in Rhynchostegium at a main river site, where increased accumulation in winter was probably an indirect effect of other chemical differences in the water during a period of high flows. Provided healthy shoots were available, there was no indication of seasonal differences in metal accumulation resulting from features of the mosses themselves.  相似文献

Abstract

The present study focused on the bryoflora of watercourses of the Tiber River basin watercourses (Central Italy). A total of 20 bryophyte species, which included 14 mosses and 6 liverworts, were collected at 32 river stations. Most species were recorded at stations of the watercourses' upper sections, which have rocky substrate and where there is cool and well oxygenated running water, with low trophic load. Only few species, such as Leptodictyum riparium, Cinclidotus fontinaloides and Riccia fluitans, were also found at stations of the middle and lower sections, which are characterized by slow-flowing, turbid, warm and eutrophic waters. Some species are widely distributed, among which Fontinalis antipyretica ssp. antipyretica and Platyhypnidium riparioides, while others are very rare, such as Cinclidotus aquaticus, Dialytrichia mucronata and R. fluitans. Some of the collected species are new regional records (Hygroamblystegium fluviatile, D. mucronata), regional confirmations of rare taxa in Italy (C.aquaticus) or confirmations of old regional reports (Hygroamblystegium tenax, C. fontinaloides, Aneura pinguis).  相似文献

Abstract. On the Vecht river plain (western Netherlands), small fens, remnants of a large mesotrophic wetland bordering a moraine, of 1 to 5 ha are found in a man-made matrix of lakes and pastures. The regional position of the fens, local position of sampling sites, composition of the vegetation and local hydrological variables were measured. Polders in the river plain produce a complex hydrology obscuring the regional zonation between moraine and river. Water supply and species composition are determined more by a site's regional than local position. High-productivity reedlands are abundant close to the river. Carex paniculata reedlands receive large amounts of river water, which gives their fen water a high K+ concentration. Low-productivity C. diandra fens and litter fens have their optimum closer to the moraine. C. diandra fens are fed mainly by inflowing nutrient-poor ground- or surface water; litter fens receive primarily rainwater. Nutrients in fen water and in peat are lowest in C. diandra and C. lasiocarpa fens, but do not differ significantly between the communities. In both, iron seems to be more important than calcium in reducing phosphate solubility. Iron richness in the C. diandra fens is caused by present inflows of ground- or surface water, while in C. lasiocarpa fens, which succeed the former, iron richness is the result of historical inflows.  相似文献

Temperate forests are characterised by variable light quality (i.e. spectral composition of light) at or near the forest floor. These understory environments have a high concentration of green light, as red and blue light are preferentially absorbed by upper canopy leaves. Understory species may be well-adapted for using green light to drive photosynthesis. Angiosperms have been shown to use green light for photosynthesis, but this ability has not been demonstrated in shade-dwelling bryophytes. In this study, net photosynthetic rate (PN) of three temperate understory species of moss (Dichodontium pellucidum (Hedw.) Schimp., Leucobryum albidum (Brid. ex P.Beauv) Lindb. and Amblystegium serpens (Hedw.) Schimp.) was measured under green, red?+?blue, and red?+?blue?+?green light to assess green light use efficiency. All three species were capable of photosynthesising beyond their respiratory demands using solely green light, with higher green light use efficiency measured in plants collected from areas with greater canopy cover, suggesting growth in a green light concentrated environment increases green light use efficiency. Each species was also collected from sites differing in their degree of canopy cover and grown under three light treatments (high light, low light, and green light). Photosynthetic efficiency (chlorophyll fluorescence), tissue nitrogen and carbon isotope concentrations were assessed after a short growth period. Growth conditions had little effect on leaf chemistry and monochromatic green light did not significantly degrade photosynthetic efficiency. This study provides the first evidence to date of positive net ‘green light photosynthesis’ in mosses.  相似文献

Isoprene emission has been documented and characterized from species in all major groups of vascular plants. We report in our survey that isoprene emission is much more common in mosses and ferns than later divergent land plants but is absent in liverworts and hornworts. The light and temperature responses of isoprene emission from Sphagnum capillifolium (Ehrh.) Hedw. are similar to those of other land plants. Isoprene increases thermotolerance of S. capillifolium to the same extent seen in higher plants as measured by chlorophyll fluorescence. Sphagnum species in a northern Wisconsin bog experienced large temperature fluctuations similar to those reported in tree canopies. Since isoprene has been shown to help plants cope with large, rapid temperature fluctuations, we hypothesize the thermal and correlated dessication stress experienced by early land plants provided the selective pressure for the evolution of light-dependent isoprene emission in the ancestors of modern mosses. As plants radiated into different habitats, this capacity was lost multiple times in favor of other thermal protective mechanisms.  相似文献

The Yenisei River, one of the largest rivers in the world, is contaminated with artificial radionuclides released by one of the Russian nuclear plants, which produces weapons-grade plutonium and has been in operation for many years. The aim of the study that was conducted between 1997 and 2002 was to investigate accumulation of artificial radionuclides by aquatic plants of the Yenisei River. The aquatic plants sampled were: Potamogeton lucens (shining weed) and Fontinalis antipyretica (water moss). The -spectrometric analysis of the samples of aquatic plants for artificial radionuclides has revealed a wide spectrum of long-lived and short-lived radionuclides. Artificial radionuclides such as 51Cr, 54Mn, 58Co, 60Co, 65Zn, 137Cs, and 152Eu were found in aquatic plants collected both near the plutonium complex and 194 km downstream in the river. The radiochemical analysis of aquatic plants revealed strontium and isotopes of plutonium. Fontinalis antipyretica had very high concentration factors of the principal radionuclides: 14220, 3110 and 500 of 51Cr, 46Sc and 239Np, respectively.  相似文献

The length of gametophytes in the moss Sanionia uncinata and concentrations of the elements Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, V and Zn in this moss and in the parent rock material were measured in West Spitsbergen (Svalbard). Samples were collected at different distances from the seashore from pure colonies in a wet moss tundra, a moderately wet moss and herb tundra, and a dry rock and terrestrial tundra. Not any statistical relation (PCCA) between concentration of elements in mosses and type of tundra habitat could be found. The principal component and classification analysis (PCCA) ordination revealed that S. uncinata from sites the most close, the most remote and on an intermediary distance from the seashore differentiated by the value of factor 1, which relates negatively to concentrations of Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb and V. S. uncinata from sites situated the most close to and the most distant from the seashore was differentiated by the value of factor 2, which was negatively related to concentrations of Na, Ni and Mn in this moss. The established model points that Na, Mn, Cu, Ni and Zn were accumulated by S. uncinata mostly from sea spray.  相似文献

1. The use of morphological gill abnormalities of hydropsychid larvae was assessed in Hydropsyche siltalai larvae exposed to cadmium in the laboratory and Cheumatopsyche lepida and H. pellucidula larvae collected from a polluted river. Two biomarkers were evaluated: (1) Hydropsychid abnormality incidence (HAI), referring to the proportion of individuals with at least some abnormalities, and (2) Hydropsychid gill abnormality indice (HYI), referring to the average number of abnormal gill tufts for all individuals. 2. Abnormality–contaminant relations for both biomarkers were established by studying gill responses along gradients of increasing cadmium and organochlorine concentrations. A cadmium gradient was verified in laboratory exposures, whereas the concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo‐p‐dioxin (PCDD), dibenzofuran (PCDF) and diphenyl ether (PCDE) of the aquatic moss Fontinalis antipyretica were used as measures of an organochlorine gradient in the field. 3. Morphological abnormalities were easily distinguished as heavy darkening, malformation and/or reduction of single gill tufts. Darkening of the gills appeared to start either at the basal or distal ends. 4. A marked increase of HYI values with increasing Cd concentration reflected a clear abnormality‐contaminant relation, whereas the mere dicotomic classification of larvae as normal or abnormal (HAI) was less informative. High values of both HAI and HYI were associated with high contamination. A significant positive correlation was found between organochlorine concentration in mosses and biomarker values for H. pellucidula, but not for C. lepida. 5. We conclude that HAI indicates deleterious effects, but fails to quantify the severity of degradation. Use of individual gill tufts, as response units in deriving HYI, revealed a simple solution to the quantification problem. Further research into the ecological meaning, physiological background and patterns of gill abnormality is recommended for assessing the applicability and relevance of hydropsychid gill biomarkers.  相似文献

土地利用与入湖河流水质的关系存在时空差异。以洱海西部入湖河流及其小流域为研究对象,综合空间分析和数理统计手段,探讨两者随空间尺度和时间变化的关系,结果表明:选取的小流域、河岸带30m缓冲区、河岸带60m缓冲区和河岸带90m缓冲区4种尺度下,对入湖河流水质影响显著的土地利用类型为建设用地和植被(包括林地和牧草地),影响最大的空间尺度为小流域尺度,河岸带30m缓冲区次之;小流域尺度下,建设用地面积百分比与入湖河流COD和TP浓度呈正相关,植被面积百分比与NH_4~+-N浓度呈负相关,响应土地利用的主要水质指标为TN和TP,回归调整系数分别为0.624和0.579;季节性关联分析表明建设用地与COD、NH_4~+-N、TP的回归关系在雨季强于旱季,植被与COD、TP的回归关系在雨季强于旱季,雨季建设用地和植被面积变化引起COD浓度变化更快。在流域管理中,针对植被覆盖率低、建设用地占比高的白鹤溪和中和溪应重点加强雨季土地利用管控,增加植被覆盖率,合理开发建设用地。  相似文献

Invasive silver carp (Hypothalmichthys molitrix) occurs throughout much of the Mississippi River and threatens the Laurentian Great Lakes. To quantify habitat selection relative to river flow and potential phytoplankton food, 77 adult silver carp were implanted with ultrasonic transmitters during spring 2008 through spring 2009 in adjacent upstream dammed and downstream undammed reaches (48 km total) of the Mississippi River. Sixty-seven percent of the fish were located. Selection of major river habitat features (dammed vs. undammed, backwaters, channel border, wing dikes, island side channels, and the main channel) was quantified. Flow rates and chlorophyll a concentration were compared between silver carp locations and random sites. Foregut chlorophyll a concentrations plus presence of macrozooplankton and detritus of 240 non-tagged silver carp were quantified. About 30% of silver carp moved upstream into the dammed reach, where average flow was slower and chlorophyll a concentration was higher. Silver carp selected wing dike areas of moderate flow (about 0.3 m/s) and elevated chlorophyll a (about 7 μg/L) relative to random sites. No silver carp occurred in areas where flow was absent. Wing dikes were preferred while the main channel was avoided. Chlorophyll a concentrations in guts were positively related to temperature and were unrelated to flow or river chlorophyll a concentration. Macrozooplankton and detritus were rare in guts. Silver carp seek areas of low flow and successfully forage across a range of temperatures, flows, and chlorophyll a concentrations that occur in rivers and large lakes.  相似文献

The dissolved oxygen concentration in the sediment pore water downstream of rivers in the Lake Biwa basin was measured, and the factors affecting the dissolved oxygen concentration were analyzed. In August 2003, nine rivers (Sakai, Nakanoi, Hebisuna, Anziki, Yasu, Echi, Ane, Oh, and Ohura) were surveyed. The dissolved oxygen was depleted in the sediment pore water of the rivers with a high proportion of particles less than 250 μm in size. For these rivers, the difference between the dissolved oxygen concentrations of the river surface water and the pore water was large, ranging from −9.54 to −5.26 mg L−1. It was found that the proportion of land turned to paddy fields has an effect on the percentage of the particles below 250 μm (standard partial regression coefficient = 0.807, p = 0.023). These results suggest that, in the Lake Biwa basin, the sedimentation of the fine particles released from paddy fields results in poor dissolved oxygen in the river sediment downstream. In addition, the water flow conditions in small- and medium-scale rivers without headwaters also affect the sedimentation of suspended particles.  相似文献

Ecosystem restoration frequently involves the reintroduction of plant material in the degraded ecosystem. When there are no plant nurseries or seeds available on the market, the plant material has to be harvested in the wild, in a “donor ecosystem.” A comprehensive assessment of donor ecosystem recovery is lacking, especially for Sphagnum‐dominated donor peatlands, where all top vegetation is harvested mechanically with different practices. We aimed to evaluate (1) the regeneration of vegetation, especially of Sphagnum mosses, to determine which harvesting practices are best to enhance recovery and (2) the influence of the site hydrological conditions and meteorological variables of the first complete growing season postharvesting on peat moss regeneration. Twenty‐five donor sites covering a 17‐year chronosequence (harvested 1–17 years ago) were inventoried along with 15 associated natural reference sites located in Quebec, New Brunswick, and Alberta, Canada. All donor sites aged 10 years or more were dominated by Sphagnum mosses, though plant composition varied between donor and their associated reference sites because of the wetter conditions at harvested donor sites. Harvesting practices strongly influenced donor site recovery, showing that the skills of the practitioner are an essential ingredient. Harvesting practices minimizing donor site disturbances are recommended, such as the choice of the adequate donor site (localization, hydrologic conditions, vegetation), the use of less disruptive methods, and harvesting when the soil is deeply frozen. This study demonstrated that harvesting surface plant material for peatland restoration is not detrimental towards the recovery of near‐natural peatland ecosystems.  相似文献

以上海11个区县,共19条河道、65个点位进行1a的氮磷污染情况调查。结果表明:(1)上海河道为不完全感潮型河网水系。潮汐、降雨对氮磷污染物的分布影响具有时间差异性。(2)上海河道区县之间氮磷污染差异大(P0.05)。氮磷浓度从中心城区河道依次向外呈现"圆环状"稀释扩散趋势。黄浦江以南河道水质好于黄浦江以北河道;近江苏的河道总体氮磷浓度水平高于近浙江的河道(上海东南部)(P0.05)。水体中污染物浓度、扩散、降解与人为扰动和城镇化程度密切相关。(3)聚类分析(Cluster Analysis,CA)结果显示上海市河道污染水平在点位之间区别不大,而多维尺度分析(Multidimensional Scaling,MDS)显示上海市河道污染水平在点位之间具有一定差异,并与水质评价结果一致。(4)经生态修复后的河道水质优于修复前(P0.05),说明上海市人工水生态修复措施和生态型驳岸建设对改善河道水质有潜在价值。  相似文献
