A possible cause of the low eyed-egg percentage that afflicts pond-reared masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou at a fish hatchery (Kumaishi Fish Hatchery, Hokkaido, Japan) was investigated. Serum cortisol levels of masu salmon during the spawning period were compared between individuals from Kumaishi and those from another station (Mori). Cortisol, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) hormones were also measured in eyed eggs and their levels were compared to the eyed-egg percentage. Serum cortisol levels were significantly higher at Kumaishi than at Mori in May and July of the breeding season. At the Kumaishi station, there was a linear positive relationship between serum cortisol and fertilized-egg cortisol levels of female masu salmon. As cortisol levels in both ovulating females and eyed eggs increased, the eyed-egg percentage decreased, indicating a highly significant negative relationship between cortisol levels and eyed-egg percentage. In contrast, as T3 and T4 levels in eyed eggs increased, the eyed-egg percentage increased. The strong positive correlation between high cortisol levels in serum and in eyed eggs at Kumaishi indicates that the frequently higher cortisol levels may have caused the lowering of the eyed-egg percentage.  相似文献

By 15 June, 82% of the catch of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar kelts had been taken from the middle part of River Teno, northern Scandinavia. The median date of capture was 4 June for males and 8 June for females. Salmon of 1–4 sea–winters (SW) of both sexes survived spawning to return to sea as kelts. Among males, 1 SW kelts were caught earliest in the spring and 3 SW latest, but among females 4 SW were earliest, then 3 SW and finally 1 and 2 SW. There were 17 river and sea–age combinations among the kelts compared with 23 among the ascending salmon. The smolt age distribution and the mean smolt age differed significantly only between female 2 SW ascending salmon (3·97 years) and kelts (4·14 years). The proportion of 1 SW females was higher and that of 3 SW males lower among kelts than among ascending salmon. The proportion of males among 1 SW ascending salmon was 80% but among kelts only 57%. Similarly, the proportion of males among 3 SW fish was 21% for ascending salmon but only 7% for kelts. Hence overwinter mortality was higher among males. Male and female kelts of 1 and female kelts of 2 SWhad a greater mean length than ascending salmon in corresponding groups indicating a better survival of larger fish within an age group. Grilse ascend rivers after most kelts have left, but the main catch of ascending 2–3 SW salmon takes place concurrently with kelts leaving the river, inadvertently targeting kelts in the fishery.  相似文献

The study aimed at identifying spawning season and potential year classes reaching maturity in the north‐eastern Mediterranean, an area where little information on tuna spawning is available. Gonads (60 ovaries and 36 testis) were obtained from little tunny, Euthynnus alletteratus. The fish were caught between November 2002 and May 2005 in the north‐eastern Mediterranean Sea. The ovaries were histologically examined to determine the reproductive conditions and developmental stages of oocytes. Seven females sampled in May, July, and August were sexually mature (stage III or IV). The gonado‐somatic index (GSI) indicated that spawning generally occurred between May and September. The most intensive spawning period was observed between July and August. The sex ratio was calculated as 1 : 1.7 M/F (total n = 96). The length and weight relationship was calculated with W = 0.038 L2.77, ages from year I to IV being included in the analysis.  相似文献

Between June and September the magnitude of the plasma cortisol response of maturing male and female rainbow trout to confinement was indistinguishable. A progressive increase in confinement-induced cortisol levels in both sexes occurred during May to September, associated with the seasonal rise in water temperature. Between September and January a reduction of >50% in the magnitude of the cortisol response to confinement in male fish (but no decline in females) coincided with declining water temperature and significant increases in plasma 11-ketotestosterone and elevated plasma testosterone levels. Plasma oestradiol-17β levels were significantly greater in females than males throughout the study period and this difference was maximal between September and January. However, plasma testosterone was also elevated in females during this period and levels overall were higher than those in male fish. Previous studies have shown oestradiol-17β and testosterone to have diametrically opposed effects on stress responsiveness in trout, with the former enhancing, and the latter suppressing, the cortisol response to a stressor. The relative roles of androgens, estrogen and water temperature in modulating the stress responsiveness of rainbow trout are discussed.  相似文献

Life-history theory predicts that stress responses should be muted to maximize reproductive fitness. Yet, the relationship between stress and reproduction for semelparous salmon is unusual because successfully spawning individuals have elevated plasma cortisol levels. To tease apart the effects of high baseline cortisol levels and stress-induced elevation of cortisol titers, we determined how varying degrees of cortisol elevation (i.e., acute and chronic) affected behavior, reproductive physiology, and reproductive success of adult female pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) relative to different states of ovulation (i.e., ripe and unripe). Exhaustive exercise and air exposure were applied as acute stressors to manipulate plasma cortisol in salmon either confined to a behavioral arena or free-swimming in a spawning channel. Cortisol (eliciting a cortisol elevation to levels similar to those in post-spawn female salmon) and metyrapone (a corticosteroid synthesis inhibitor) implants were also used to chemically manipulate plasma cortisol. Cortisol implants elevated plasma cortisol, and impaired reproductive success; cortisol-treated fish released fewer eggs and died sooner than fish in other treatment groups. In contrast, acute stressors elevated plasma cortisol and the metyrapone implant suppressed plasma cortisol, but neither treatment significantly altered reproductive success, behavior, or physiology. Our results suggest that acute stressors do not influence behavior or reproductive outcome when experienced upon arrival at spawning grounds. Thus, certain critical aspects of salmonid reproduction can become refractory to various stressful conditions on spawning grounds. However, there is a limit to the ability of these fish to tolerate elevated cortisol levels as revealed by experimental elevation of cortisol.  相似文献

A multi-species demersal fish stock was studied from April 1969 to July 1970. The common species are described in this paper and consist of Carcharhinus sealei, Rhynchobatus djeddensis, Dasyatis kuhlii, Rachycentron canadum, Psettodes erumei and Arius sp. With the exception of Rachycentron canadum , these fish were available throughout the year and some coincidence of increased availability was noted in August/September. Psettodes erumei , the commonest fish caught, was most available in August/September, February/ March and June. The size and weight distribution of each of these fish is described. Morphometric results indicate that two fish, Dasyatis kuhlii and Psettodes erumei , exhibit sexual dimorphism, the females being larger and heavier than the males. Carcharhinus sealei, Rhynchobatus djeddensis and Rachycentron canadum have a nearly isometric growth exponent whereas Dasyatis kuhlii, Psettodes erumei and Arius sp. have an allometric growth exponent. All fish were carnivores, Rhynchobatus djeddensis, Rachycentron canadum and Arius sp. being primarily crustacean feeders, Dasyatis kuhlii feeding on polychaetes and crustaceans and Carcharhinus sealei and Psettodes erumei feeding mainly on fish. The increased number of all three bony fish noted in August/September (immediately prior to the short rains in October/November) is discussed in relation to feeding activity and the initiation of spawning activity. It is suggested that spawning in Psettodes erumei and Arius sp. is initiated in September, continuing possibly to February and then during the long rains (March/May) and the South East Monsoon the fish recover. It is also suggested that pregnant elasmobranchs may come inshore in greater numbers during the rains to give birth.  相似文献

The histological analysis of eastern Atlantic bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus ovaries caught from February to September 1999–2000, made it possible to distinguish the presence of seven oocyte developmental stages and allowed the characterization of six time-dependent ovary maturity stages. The ovaries of mature (fork length, L F ≥ 110 cm) bluefin tuna were non-active from August (spent period) to March (quiescent period) when they contained only perinucleolar-stage oocytes. Ovary development started in April to early May (recrudescent period) with the appearance of oocytes at the lipid stage. Vitellogenesis appeared in mid-May (ripening period) and post-vitellogenesis occurred in late May to mid-June (pre-spawning period). In late June to early July, hydrated oocytes, a sign of imminent spawning, were found only in specimens caught in Balearic waters. Females ranging between 100 and 110 cm L F, captured during the recrudescent and ripening periods, had the largest oocytes at the lipid stage, most of which were degenerating. An extensive vitellogenic atresia was observed in the ovaries of five females caught during the spawning period in non-spawning areas.  相似文献

A study was made of the biology of S. maculatus . Results of gonadal examination of 347 males and 409 females suggest spawning takes place from October to April, a period associated with low salinities. First spawning takes place at ages I1 and/or III for both sexes. Sex ratio results suggest spawning may be promiscuous, males outnumbering females. Egg counts from 12 ripe females ranged from 26 057 to 149 736. A period of abundance from May to September may be associated with a post-spawning feeding migration encompassing the island, possibly in a clockwise direction. Otolith were used to age 817 fish. Opaque and translucent rings are formed yearly. The translucent ring, representing a period of slow growth, is laid down during the spawning season. The fish can live for nine years with females growing faster than males. Growth parameters are compared with those obtained for Brazilian and Florida fish. Mortality rates were investigated and gill nets effected higher mortality rates than beach seines. Full recruitment takes place at age III for gill nets, and ages II and III for beach seines.  相似文献

In the Gulf of Alaska, adult Pacific cod exhibited an annual cycle of condition, gonad index and liver index in which maximum values occurred in ripe fish in March and minima in July. About 30–31 % of prespawning stored energy was expended during the spawning effort. The energy associated with spawning derived from liver (24% and 18%), somatic tissue (22% and 33%) and gonad (53% and 48%) for females and males, respectively. Liver index and gonad index at the time of sampling were directly related in females, but in males gonad index was best related to liver index 1–3 months earlier.
The Pacific cod is very similar to the Atlantic cod in terms of energy cycling, maximum gonad sizes, energy expended during spawning and gonadal contribution to energy expenditure. However, in Pacific cod, somatic tissue contributes markedly to energy expended during reproduction. The Pacific cod cod differs from the walleye pollock with respect to gonad index (13% and 20%ν. 20% and 8% for females and males, respectively), spawning weight loss (25%ν. 38%), liver energy loss during spawning (71%ν. 55%) and energy cost of spawning.  相似文献

From June 2004 to May 2006, the reproductive biology of the blue runner Caranx crysos was studied in the Gulf of Gabes (Southern Tunisia). Of 1668 individuals examined, 777 were females (46.6%) and 891 were males (53.4%). The sex ratio significantly deviated in favour of males (♀:♂ = 0.87 : 1). The difference in the numbers of females and males was significant among size‐classes. However, there was no significant difference between sexes over months and seasons. Monthly changes in the Gonado‐Somatic Index (GSI) showed a rapid increase during summer to very high levels in July (3.51% for males and 2.55% for females) and August (3.47% for males and 2.59% for females) before declining sharply in September (0.58% for females and 0.38% for males). The gametogenesis activity began with a pre‐maturation phase, from 20 May to the first 10 days of July, followed by a pre‐spawning phase, from 20 July to 20 August. From the last 10 days of August to 20 September the gonads were in the ripe and spawning stages. From the end of September to early May, gonads were in the post‐spawning and resting stages. The size at which 50% of the population reached sexual maturity was significantly different in males and females: males attained sexual maturity at fork length FL50 = 210.20, whereas females attained maturity at FL50 = 222.3 mm. Age at maturity was 2.4 years for males and 2.8 years for females.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of the Mediterranean razor fish Xyrichthys novacula was investigated by demographic data and histological analysis of the female, intersexual and male gonads. Specimens were collected by bottom trawl on a monthly basis between June 2000 and July 2001 in a sandy bay in southern Thyrrenian. Gonad histology confirmed that the Mediterranean razor fish is a monandric, protogynous hermaphrodite. Females reached first sexual maturity at 100 mm ( L T) and the estimated mean L T at first maturity ( L 50) was 125 mm. Females exhibited asynchronous ovarian development and multiple ovulations occurred over the spawning period. Vitellogenesis started in early May and spawning occurred from late May until late September. Sexual transition involved a large‐scale atresia of all oocyte stages and a massive degeneration of ovarian tissue followed by primordial germ cells proliferation. Sex change began at spawning time (June) but transitional individuals tended to cluster at the end of the reproductive period (September). They accounted for 17·1% of the population sampled and were found in a broad size range (105–150 mm L T).  相似文献

Reproductive cycles in a reared strain of the mummichog, a daily spawner   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Annual, lunar, and diel samplings were taken from a strain of mummichog (Arasaki strain) reared in outdoor tanks under natural conditions, to examine gonadal maturity. Gonads of yearling fish were quite immature in September. During late autumn and winter, a gradual increase in the GSI of both sexes was observed, and the growth of cortical alveolus phase oocytes in females and basal spermatogenesis in males progressed. In late February, a rapid increase in the GSI of both sexes, vitellogenesis in females, and active spermatogenesis in males, occurred. The spawning period of the yearling fish was from late March to August judging from the presence of milt-producing males and ovulated females. The spawning period of the underyearling fish started in the same month as the yearlings, but terminated 1 month earlier. Plasma levels of oestradiol-17 β (E2) in females and testosterone in males were high during the spawning period in the yearlings. In the underyearlings, however, E2 levels peaked in early spring, and declined in the latter part of the spawning period. Neither a lunar nor semilunar cycle was evident in the reproductive activity of this fish, which proved to be a typical daily spawner. Females showed an apparent daily reproductive cycle; oocyte maturation commenced at about 1200 hours, germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD) occurred at about 2400 hours, and ovulation was completed by 2400 hours, 24 h after GVBD. Such clear annual and daily reproductive cycles make this strain of mummichog a suitable model for the study of environmental and endocrine regulation of reproductive cycles in marine and estuarine teleosts.  相似文献

The sequential changes in serum oestradiol 17β (measured by specific radioimmunoassay), vitellogenin (measured by phosphoprotein phosphorus content) and total calcium (measured by fluorimetry) in male and female rainbow trout under a simulated natural photoperiod cycle were investigated. Resting levels of 130 pg/ml serum oestradiol in both male and female fish were found in April and May. In the female, levels reached a peak of 4800 pg/ml in October, and almost returned to resting levels just prior to spawning in mid-January. No significant change from resting levels was seen in the male fish.
In both male and female fish levels of 25 μg/ml serum phosphoprotein phosphorus and 10–14 mg % total serum calcium were found from April to July. Coincident with the rise in oestradiol 17β, in the females serum levels of phospho-protein phosphorus and total calcium increased to 400 uβg/ml and 58 mg% respectively just prior to spawning. In the males no significant change in either of these values was observed throughout the cycle. These results strongly support the hypothesis that photoperiod is the major factor in the environmental control of reproductive activity in the rainbow trout.  相似文献

In contrast to numerous studies showing breeding seasonality for animals living in temperate zones, few have addressed the effect of annual environmental changes on hormones and behavior related to reproduction for animals living in tropical and equatorial regions. In order to expand information on other primates living near the equator, we used 13 adult common marmosets, eight males and five females living under natural climatic conditions in a colony located in North-Eastern Brazil. Blood samples were collected monthly from July 2002 to June 2004. Cortisol assays were performed by ELISA. Cortisol levels varied according to environmental temperature and rainfall but were not significantly affected by photoperiod. After separating out these environmental effects through an analysis of covariance for repeated measurements, a marginal significant difference in cortisol levels according to the seasons of the year was detected. A significant difference in cortisol levels between females and males was also observed. The results suggest that annual variation in cortisol in common marmosets is influenced by temperature and rainfall and might be associated with the mating season.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The age, growth and reproduction of the small, introduced fish Gambusia affinis (Baird & Girard, 1853) were studied in the estuary of the Guadalquivir river.
2. The life-span was very short, the stock contained only two age groups: with annulus (1+ group; 10–12 months old) and without annulus (0+ group).
3. In both sexes growth restarted in April when the annulus appeared, but whilst 1+ males stopped growth, 1+ females grew steadily to June. Growth of 0+ spawners was only evident in September, the last month of the reproductive period. A differential growth rate between sexes was also evident.
4. 1+ specimens reproduced during May and June and their offspring from July to September. In both age groups somatic condition progressively declined during the spawning period.
5. The loss of condition and the disappearance of 1 + and the larger 04-specimens after reproduction may indicate the cost of a prolonged high level of reproductive effort.
6. The total fecundity (taken as the number of embryos) of 1 + females was represented by the formula: Fec=5.08 T.L. (mm) -170.07 and that of 0+ specimens by: Fec=2.23 T.L. (mm) -42.92. The maximum average monthly fecundity was reached in June when the length of the mother was at its greatest.
7. Length at first maturity was smaller in 0+ group than in the 1 + group; the difference between the two groups was greater in males (≅5 mm, T.L.) than in females (≅3 mm, T.L.). Also the average total length of 14-spawners was greater than 0+ spawners. There were significant differences in the overall sex ratio of 956 males to 2057 females.
8. The differences found in growth and reproduction between the two age groups suggest that life-history tactics may vary not only between different stocks but also within the same stock among its different components.  相似文献

A method is described by which the adult females of marine and freshwater teleosts can be distinguished by a biochemical test performed on a blood sample. The test depends on the measurement in the blood plasma of alkali-labile protein-linked phosphorus, a specific measure of yolk protein (vitellogenin). In vitellogenic females, values of 20–100 μg protein phosphorus ml plasma−1 are usually found, while in males, non-vitellogenic females and immature fish of both sexes the value is <7.5 and usually <5 μg ml−1. At the appropriate season, most females can be positively identified. Good results can be obtained 2–3 months before spawning, and in some species for an undefined period after spawning. The advantages of this method over immunological techniques for the determination of vitellogenin, such as radioimmunoassay and immunoelectrophoresis, are the wide range of vertebrate species to which it can be applied, and its low cost. Its disadvantages are its lower sensitivity and the larger volume of plasma (0.5 ml) which must be used.  相似文献

Purse-seine catches of the mackerel, Rastrelliger kanagurta Cuvier along the west coast of Zanzibar revealed seasonal patterns of abundance associated with monsoon winds. Low catches were obtained during the south-east monsoons while the north east monsoons were characterised by high catches. The largest sizes of mackerel were caught between June and August with a mixture of large and smaller ones between September and March. Mackerel in spawning condition were common between June and September with immature ones between September and January. The variations in mackerel abundance, size composition, and maturity of the fish are discussed in relation to seasonal changes, fish migrations, recruitment and food supply.  相似文献

Parts of the Arctic charr population of the subarctic Lake Visjön in north-west Sweden migrate upstream during the spring to two small, recently eutrophied and very productive lakes. Large repeat migrants arrive first, followed by young first-time migrants. Charr in the small lakes grow more rapidly than those resident in L. Visjön. In early September mature fish leave the lakes, followed by immature fish later in September and in October. Overwintering and spawning takes place in L. Visjön. Migratory females attain maturity at age 4 years and resident females at age 6 years. The migrant fish return annually until they are 5–6 years old. This limit may be due to reduced relative growth benefits of the habitat shift for larger individuals. The rapid development of these regular habitat shifts could be explained by an internally fixed exploratory behaviour in these Arctic charr that makes the detection and utilization of distant feeding resources possible. Migrants will possess a considerably higher fitness, if survival rates for migratory and resident fish are equal.  相似文献

Perca fluviatilis L. were caught by gill nets every 3 h over a 24 h period monthly from February 1975 until January 1976. The numbers caught increased with rise in temperature (correlation coefficient r = 0.86 P < 0.001). During the winter months perch migrated into deeper water although some fish were still caught in shallow water (1–6 m). Perch were active at very low light intensities. However changes in visual surface irradiance (400–700 nm) and water clarity caused inverse changes in activity. Only June did not conform to this pattern and it was presumed that spawning behaviour was of primary importance. It is suggested that increase in eutrophication with its effect on water clarity enables fish to become more active during the day in the summer months. They are thus able to utilise food sources to a maximum at an optimum period for feeding and growth.  相似文献

We investigated the breeding habits of the bastard halibut, Tarphops oligolepis, in the southwest of Kyushu Island, Japan. This fish was found to have two spawning seasons in a year (around July and November); individual fish spawned over the two spawning seasons. During the spawning seasons, males established territories. Home ranges of females overlapped with those of other females and with territories of plural males. The courtship partner changed during a day, and multiple matings among both sexes were observed during a spawning season, suggesting that T. oligolepis bred promiscuously. This is the first report of the mating system among Paralichthyidae. Received: October 18, 2000 / Revised: May 7, 2001 / Accepted: July 9, 2001  相似文献
