Diets containing 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60% brewer's dried grains (BDG) were supplied ad libitum to twenty Rhode Island Red laying hens in the seventh month of lay. The experiment lasted 75 days, after which pure brewer's dried grains (90% BDG) were offered to the same hens for two weeks. Diets with up to 45% BDG were isoproteic, but diets with a higher content had a higher level of protein.On a dry-matter basis, the BDG contained 2.27 kcal ME/g and nitrogen digestibility was 75.4%. Diets containing 45% or more BDG showed a significant decrease (p<0.05) in metabolizable-energy content. No significant differences were observed in either nitrogen digestibility or nitrogen balance. Brewer's dried grains must be considered as a protein supplement.Some productive characteristics (food intake, egg production, feed efficiency, egg weight, egg quality and body-weight gain) were also studied. Diets containing 15 and 30% BDG appeared to be adequate for laying hens; 45% BDG was also acceptable, although the losses of body weight and shell quality suggested that this level should not be used without further research. At 60%, BDG caused a significant decrease in most of the characteristics studied. The use of 90% BDG caused a reduction in food intake, enormous body weight losses and, in the second week of the experimental period, an inhibition of the lay.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine whether atomoxetine plasma concentration predicts attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) response. This post-hoc analysis assessed the relationship between atomoxetine plasma concentration and ADHD and ODD symptoms in patients (with ADHD and comorbid ODD) aged 6–12 years. Patients were randomly assigned to atomoxetine 1.2 mg/kg/day (n = 156) or placebo (n = 70) for 8 weeks (Study Period II). At the end of 8 weeks, ODD non-remitters (score >9 on the SNAP-IV ODD subscale and CGI-I > 2) with atomoxetine plasma concentration <800 ng/ml at 2 weeks were re-randomized to either atomoxetine 1.2 mg/kg/day or 2.4 mg/kg/day for an additional 4 weeks (Study Period III). ODD remitters and non-remitters with plasma atomoxetine ≥800 ng/ml remained on 1.2 mg/kg/day atomoxetine for 4 weeks. Patients who received atomoxetine, completed Study Period II, and entered Study Period III were included in these analyses. All the groups demonstrated improvement on the SNAP-IV ODD and ADHD-combined subscales (P < .001). At the end of Study Periods II and III, ODD and ADHD improvement was significantly greater in the remitter group compared with the non-remitter groups. Symptom improvement was numerically greater in the non-remitter (2.4 mg/kg/day compared with the non-remitter 1.2 mg/kg/day) group. Atomoxetine plasma concentration was not indicative of ODD and ADHD improvement after 12 weeks of treatment. ADHD and ODD symptoms improved in all the groups with longer duration on atomoxetine. Results suggest atomoxetine plasma concentration does not predict ODD and ADHD symptom improvement. However, a higher atomoxetine dose may benefit some patients.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the protective effects of the NF-кB inhibition with pyrrolidine-dithiocarbamate (PDTC) in ischemia–reperfusion (I/R) injury in the rat bladder. Twenty-four Sprague-Dawley male rats were divided into three groups. Group I; (n = 8) control, group II; (n = 8) I/R group; group III (n = 8) I/R and PDTC treatment. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and gluatathione-S-transferase (GST) enzymes was studied in bladder tissue. Lipid peroxidation (as TBARS) levels in tissue homogenate were measured with thiobarbituric acid reaction. All the slides were stained with NF-кB, p53 and HSP60 immunohistochemistry for detection genome destruction and tissue stress, respectively. Our results show that the mean TBARS levels were significantly higher in group II (p < 0.05). The TBARS levels were significantly decreased in group III compared with the group II (p < 0.05). CAT, SOD and GST activities were decreased in group II, but these enzymes levels were significantly increased in group III according to the group II (p < 0.05). Under microscopic evaluation NF-кB expression increased significantly in group II compared to the group I (p < 0.05) and then decreased in group III (p < 0.05). HSP60 and p53 expression in group II was increased significantly compared with group I. Under microscopic evaluation we detected that HSP60 and p53 expression was increased significantly in group II compared with group I. In group III PDTC administration was decreased the HSP60 and p53 expression, this difference was statistically significant (p < 0.05). The results of the present study have demonstrated that NF-кB inhibition with PDTC protects and provides beneficial effects on ischemia/reperfusion stress related bladder tissue destruction.  相似文献

Stage of maturity at the time of harvest is considered as one of the factors influencing the nutritive value of crop residues. Thus this study was carried out to assess the effect of harvesting maize at different stages of grain maturity on yield and quality of maize grain and stover. The maize crop was harvested at grain moisture content of 28–30, 20–23 and 10–12%, which were designated as Stages I, II and III, respectively. Grain yield, standardised to 12.5% moisture content, showed an increasing trend, whereas cob, stover, total crop residue and total biomass dry matter (DM) yield showed a decreasing trend with increasing stage of maturity (p>0.05). The declining trend in stover yield with increased stage of maturity was due mainly to leaf loss. There was a significant decrease (p<0.05) in crop residue–grain ratio and leaf–stem ratio and a significant increase in the harvest index and hectolitre weight of the grain as the grain moisture content decreased from about 30 to 10%. Maize stover harvested at Stage I had significantly higher (p<0.05) ash content than those harvested at Stages II and III. The crude protein (CP) content was significantly lower, whereas the neutral detergent fibre and cellulose contents were higher (p<0.05) in Stage III than in Stages I and II. There was a decreasing trend in in sacco DM degradability with increasing stage of maturity. The washing loss, potential degradability and effective DM degradability at 0.03 h−1 rumen outflow rate were higher (p<0.05) in Stage I than in Stages II and III. The volume of gas produced after 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 h of incubation was higher (p<0.05) in Stage I than in Stages II and III. The a value (the intercept of the gas production curve) and the gas production potential (a+b) were higher (p<0.05) in Stage I than in Stage III. Reduction in the nutritive value of stover with increasing stage of maturity was characterised by reduction in CP contents and increasing concentration of fibrous constituents. These were reflections of changes in the morphological composition of stover and losses of nutrients within the morphological fractions with increasing stage of maturity.  相似文献

Introduction

Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PCP) is a major cause of disease in immunocompromised individuals. Diagnosis is typically obtained by microscopy and/or PCR. For ambiguous PCR results, we evaluated the new biomarker 1,3-Beta-d-Glucan (BDG).

Methods

BDG serum levels were assessed and correlated to PCR results in immunosuppressed patients with ARDS.

Results

11 (22%) out of 50 patients had suspected PCP. APACHE II (26 vs. 24; p < 0.002), SOFA score (16 vs. 14; p < 0.010) and mortality rate (34 vs. 69% p < 0.004; 34 vs. 80% p < 0.003) were significantly altered in patients with positive (pPCR) and slightly positive (spPCR) PCJ PCR as compared to patients with no-PCP (nPCP). BDG levels were significantly lower in patients with nPCP (86; 30–315 pg/ml) than in patients with pPCR (589; 356–1000 pg/ml; p < 0.001) and spPCP (398; 297–516 pg/ml; p < 0.004) referring to the cutoff in this study for PCP of 275 pg/ml. An overall sensitivity (S) of 92% (95% CI 86–96%) and specificity (SP) of 84% (95% CI 79–85%) for PCP were found for the BDG Fungitell assay. In detail, S of 98% (95% CI 94–100%) and SP of 86% (95% CI 82–92%) for pPCP and S of 98% (95% CI 96–100%) and SP of 88% (95% CI 86–96%) for spPCO were found.

Conclusion

Serum BDG levels were strongly elevated in PCP, and the negative predictive value is high. BDG could be used as a preliminary test for patients with suspected PCP, especially in patients with slightly positive PCR results.

Studies were done on blood biochemical constituents and rumen fermentation pattern of growing buffalo calves fed ammoniated wheat straw (UAS)-based rations supplemented with three different protein supplements. Eighteen buffalo calves (140 kg) were divided into three groups of six calves each and were fed on UAS supplemented with a concentrate mixture (roughage:concentrate ratio 58:42) containing 8% (or 3.5% of total ration) untreated groundnut cake (GNC) (group I), 8% formaldehyde treated GNC (group II) and 8% fish meal (group III), respectively, for 19 weeks. During this growth study, blood biochemistry was studied. Rumen fermentation study was done on three fistulated growing buffalo calves using a 3×3 Latin square switch over design. Blood glucose and ammonia-N did not differ significantly among the treatments. However, blood urea-N of calves in group III was higher (P<0.05) than in groups I and II, but the latter two did not differ from each other in this respect. Total protein in group I was comparable to group II and group III which were significantly different from each other. The rumen pH, total volatile fatty acids, ammonia-N and total protozoal count were similar, however, total N and TCA insoluble N in group II and group III were higher (P<0.01) than in group I. Fish meal containing diet favoured holotrichs, whereas, protected GNC containing diet favoured spirotrichs as indicated by significantly higher count. It was concluded that the beneficial effects of supplementing formaldehyde protected GNC at 8% in the concentrate mixture to the UAS-based diets were greater than supplementation of unprotected GNC or low quality fish meal in ration of buffalo calves growing at 400 g because of improved rumen fermentation, absorption and metabolism of nutrients as observed in blood biochemistry.  相似文献

The longevity and robustness of bioreactors used for wastewater treatment is determined by the activity of the microorganisms under steady and transient loading conditions. Two identical continuously operated inverse fluidized bed bioreactors (IFB), IFB R1 and IFB R2, were tested for sulphate removal under the same operating conditions for 140 d (Periods I–IV). Later, IFB R1 was used as the control reactor (Period V), while IFB R2 was operated under feast (Period V-A) and famine (Period V-B) feeding conditions for 66 d. The sulphate removal efficiency was comparable in both IFB, <20% in Period I and ∼70% during Periods II, III and IV. The robustness of the IFB was evident when the sulphate removal efficiency remained comparable during the feast Period (67 ± 15%) applied to IFB R2 compared to continuous feeding Periods (Period IV (71 ± 4%) for IFB R2 and Period V (61 ± 15%) for IFB R1). The IFB performance was modelled using a three-layered artificial neural networks (ANN) model (5-11-3) and a sensitivity analysis, the sulphate removal was found to be dependent on the COD:sulphate ratio. Besides, the robustness, resilience and adaptation time of the IFB were affected by the degree of mixing and the hydraulic retention time.  相似文献

Fluoride can exert toxic effects on soft tissues, giving rise to a broad array of symptoms and pathological changes. The aim of this study was to investigate on erythrocytes and erythrocyte immune adherence function in broiler chickens fed with high fluorine (F) diets by measuring the total erythrocyte count (TEC), the contents of hemoglobin (Hb), packed cell volumn (PCV), erythrocyte osmotic fragility (EOF), erythrocyte C3b receptor rosette rate (E-C3bRR), and erythrocyte immune complex rosette rate (E-ICRR). A total of 280 1-day-old healthy avian broiler chickens were randomly allotted into four equal groups of 70 birds each and fed with a corn–soybean basal diet containing 22.6 mg F/kg (control group) or same basal diets supplemented with 400, 800, and 1,200 mg F/kg (high F groups I, II, and III) in the form of sodium fluoride for 42 days. Blood samples were collected for the abovementioned parameters analysis at 14, 28, and 42 days of age during the experiment. The experimental results indicated that TEC, Hb, and PCV were significantly lower (p?<?0.05 or p?<?0.01), and EOF was higher (p?<?0.05 or p?<?0.01) in the high F groups II and III than that in the control group from 14 to 42 days of age. The E-C3bRR was significantly decreased (p?<?0.01) in the three high F groups, whereas the E-ICRR was markedly increased (p?<?0.01) in the high F groups II and III from 14 to 42 days of age. It was concluded that dietary F in the range of 800 to 1, 200 mg/kg could significantly cause anemia and impair the integrity of erythrocyte membrane, the transport capacity of oxygen and carbon dioxide, and erythrocyte immune adherence function in broiler chickens.  相似文献

In two day-light phytotron rooms young apple trees were exposed to either 15 or 25°C in three successive periods of six weeks (Periods I, II and III) starting in the beginning of the growing season. A control group was kept outside throughout. Exposure to 15°C in either period had little effect on sylleptic growth; there was also hardly any difference with the outside treatment. At 25°C total sylleptic growth was greatly favoured especially when that temperature was applied in all three periods. However, 25°C given continuously did not affect sylleptic shoot number in Period II and III, but applied only in Period II or III greatly enhanced it. In a few cases there was a positive carry-over effect of 25°C given in Period I or II on sylleptic growth in the next period. No such carry-over effect was found for shoot number. Although temperature did influence growth of the parent shoot, that influence was much smaller than for sylleptic growth. The outgrowth of sylleptic shoots mainly occurred in periods when growth vigour of the parent shoot was highest. The distribution of sylleptic shoots along the parent shoot was greatly affected by the period in which the temperature of 25°C was applied suggesting that buds are only able to respond to outgrowth-inducing factors in a certain stage of development.  相似文献

As the age of a cell increases, so does the potential for DNA damage. Recent theories on ageing suggest accumulative DNA damage is the primary cause of cellular senescence, possibly due to the decreased ability of DNA to act as a template for gene expression.In this paper we investigate the effects of ageing on the level of nuclear DNA damage in tissues of wild mussels of three different age groups; 2–4 years (group I), 6–8 years (group II) and 10 years (group III). In the digestive gland and haemolymph cells, a significant age-dependent increase of DNA damage was observed, as evaluated by the fluorimetric alkaline DNA unwinding technique, which is able to detect both direct single strand DNA breaks as well as alkali-labile apurinic sites.In addition, the rate of DNA polymerase activity was studied in order to determine whether DNA damage was dependent on DNA alteration, or because of a reduced rate of DNA repair. Unscheduled DNA repair synthesis in isolated nuclei of digestive gland cells in older mussels, was significantly decreased in comparison to younger mussels (−42% in group II and −37% in group III, p<0.01). In the digestive gland, salt extraction gives a slight, but significant, decrease of aphidicolin-sensitive DNA polymerase activity in age group III of −25%, p<0.05.Finally, we looked at the age variation in relation to oxidative stress. This was evaluated by measuring malondialdehyde accumulation in mussel cells. Digestive gland cells of group III, showed a significant age-related increase in malondialdehyde content of 170%, p<0.01, indicative of enhanced peroxidative processes.Taken together, these data suggest that the accumulation of DNA damage in group II is mainly dependent on the impairment of DNA repair systems. This is contrary to group III DNA damage, where a possible relationship between oxidative stress and alteration of nuclear DNA metabolism is found, probably deriving from an antioxidant defence decline.  相似文献

Recently, much interest has been generated in the search for phytochemical therapeutics, as they are largely free from adverse side effects and economical. The goal of this study was to determine the efficacy of Vitex negundo in modulating the selenite-induced oxidative stress in vivo model. Sprague–Dawley rat pups of 8 days old were used for the study and divided into control (G I), selenite induced (G II), and selenite + V. negundo treated (G III). Cataract was induced by the single subcutaneous injection of sodium selenite (4 mg/kg body weight) on the tenth day and V. negundo (2.5 mg/Kg body weight) administered intraperitoneally from eighth to 15th day. Morphological examination of the rat lenses revealed no opacification in G I and mild opacification in G III whereas dense opacification in G II (stages 4–6). Levels of selenium in G II and G III showed no significant changes. The activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and Ca2+ATPase were significantly increased in G III compared to G II (p?<?0.05), while lower level of reactive oxygen species, Ca2+, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances were observed in G III compared G II (p?<?0.05). These results indicate the therapeutic potential of methanolic extract of V. negundo on modulating biochemical parameters against selenite-induced cataract, which have been reported in this paper for the first time.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare fertility and early embryo mortality rates (< or = 5 days of incubation) following artificial insemination (AI) of common duck females (Anas Platyrhynchos) with semen from either common or Muscovy (Cairina Moschata) drakes at various periods of the reproductive season (Period I, 27-35 weeks; Period II, 39-43 weeks and Period III, 49-56 weeks). Based on observations performed by stereomicroscopy on eggs laid from Days 2 to 10 after AI, we confirmed that fertility was significantly lower in the interbred compared to the purebred cross at each of the periods tested (purebred 58.1, 61.2 and 54.2 versus crossbred 31.0, 40.4 and 39.5 at Periods I, II and II, respectively; 0.01 < P < 0.001). In a complementary experiment, we demonstrated that the number of perivitelline spermatozoa (NPS) was markedly lower in mule (crossbred) eggs compared to common (purebred) eggs, a strong indication that initial sperm selection occurring in the lower oviduct is probably more intense after crossbred compared to purebred insemination. Comparison of early embryo mortality (EEM) between mule and common duck eggs indicated that increased levels of EEM in mule embryos corresponded to Stages II-IV of the Eyal-Giladi and Kochav classification (EGK). While a similar age-dependent increase in early embryo mortality was observed in eggs from both genetic origins during the latter periods of the reproductive season, it was also established that embryo mortality due to parental age was related rather to Stages X-XIV of the EGK classification in eggs from both genetic origins. It is concluded that the relative subfertility of mule compared to common duck eggs is probably the consequence of a more intense rate of selection of heterologous than homologous spermatozoa occurring in the vaginal portion of the oviduct while the causal origins of EEM in mule duck eggs can at least in part be identified on the basis of precise staging (by stereomicroscopy) of dead embryos.  相似文献

Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) transplantation improved cardiac function and reduced myocardial fibrosis in both ischemic and non-ischemic cardiomyopathies. We evaluated the effects of repeated peripheral vein injection of MSCs on collagen network remodeling and myocardial TGF-β1, AT1, CYP11B2 (aldosterone synthase) gene expressions in a rat model of doxorubicin (DOX)-induced dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Thirty-eight out of 53 SD rats survived at 10 weeks post-DOX injection (2.5 mg/kg/week for 6 weeks, i.p.) were divided into DCM blank (without treatment, n = 12), DCM placebo (intravenous tail injection of 0.5 mL serum-free culture medium every other day for ten times, n = 13), and DCM plus MSCs group (intravenous tail injection of 5 × 106 MSCs dissolved in 0.5 mL serum-free culture medium every other day for 10 times, n = 13). Ten untreated rats served as normal controls. At 20 weeks after DOX injection, echocardiography, myocardial collagen content, myocardial expressions of types I and III collagen, TGF-β1, AT1, and CYP11B2 were compared among groups. At 20 weeks post-DOX injection, 8 rats (67 %) survived in DCM blank group, 9 rats (69 %) survived in DCM placebo group while 13 rats (100 %) survived in DCM plus MSCs group. Left ventricular end-diastolic diameter was significantly higher and ejection fraction was significantly lower in DCM blank and DCM placebo groups compared to normal control rats, which were significantly improved in DCM plus MSCs group (all p < 0.05 vs. DCM blank and DCM placebo groups). Moreover, myocardial collagen volume fraction, types I and III collagen, myocardial mRNA expressions of TGF-β1, AT1, CYP11B2, and collagen I/III ratio were all significantly lower in DCM plus MSCs group compared to DCM blank and DCM placebo groups (all p < 0.05). Repeated intravenous MSCs transplantation could improve cardiac function by attenuating myocardial collagen network remodeling possibly through downregulating renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system in DOX-induced DCM rats.  相似文献

Universal Health Coverage (UHC) was implemented in Thailand in 2002. This study aims to compare cervical cancer incidence and survival before and after the implementation of UHC, including the national screening program, in the Chiang Mai population in Northern Thailand. Data of women diagnosed with in situ or malignant cervical cancer in Chiang Mai during 1998–2012 were used in our analysis. Annual age-standardized incidence rates (ASR) and age-adjusted relative survival (RS) were estimated for the following three diagnosis periods: period I: 1998–2002 (before UHC), period II: 2003–2007 (UHC implementation) and period III: 2008–2012 (after UHC). The ASR peaked in 2001 at 38 per 100,000, and then subsequently declined to 23 per 100,000 in 2012. The proportion of in situ and localized tumors increased in all age groups, while regional tumors declined. In all women (aged 15–89) with malignant cervical cancer or in situ, the 5-year RS in Period I, Period II and Period III was 73%, 74% and 77%, respectively; when only malignant cases were considered, the RS was 63%, 61% and 62%, respectively. In the screening target women (aged 30–59) with malignant or in situ tumors, the 5-year RS was 84%, 88% and 90%, respectively, in the three periods, while the RS was 71%, 74% and 75%, respectively, in only those with malignant cancers. The introduction of UHC including national cervical cancer screening program has likely reduced the magnitude and severity of cervical cancer and improved the survival of cervical cancer in the screening target age group.  相似文献

Fluoride (F) is a well-recognized hazardous substance. Ingested F initially acts locally on the intestines. The small intestine plays a critical role in the digestion, absorption, and defense. In this study, therefore, we investigated the effects of fluorine on the intestinal development by light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and histochemistry. A total of 280 one-day-old avian broilers were randomly divided into four groups and fed on a corn-soybean basal diet as control diet (fluorine, 22.6 mg/kg) or the same basal diet supplemented with 400, 800, and 1,200 mg/kg fluorine (high fluorine groups I, II, and III) in the form of sodium fluoride for 42 days. The results showed that the intestinal gross, histological, and ultrastructural changes were observed in the high fluorine groups II and III. Meanwhile, the intestinal length, weight, viscera index, villus height, crypt depth, villus height to crypt depth ratio, diameter, muscle layer thickness, and goblet cell numbers were significantly lower (p?<?0.01 or p?<?0.05), and the intestinal diameter to villus height ratio was markedly higher (p?<?0.01 or p?<?0.05) in the high fluorine groups II and III than those in control group. In conclusion, dietary fluorine in the range of 800–1,200 mg/kg obviously altered the aforementioned parameters of the intestines, implying that the intestinal development was suppressed and the intestinal functions, such as digestion, absorption, defense, or osmoregulation were impaired in broilers.  相似文献

Three experiments were conducted during the operational breeding season to confirm that continuous, subcutaneous infusion of low-dose GnRH would not disrupt established estrous cycles (Experiment 1), and test the hypotheses that a similar treatment would stimulate secretion of LH and induce development of ovulatory follicles in persistently anovulatory mares (Experiments 2 and 3). Treatment with GnRH (5 microg/h) increased (P<0.001) serum P4 during the luteal phase (7.7+/-0.5 versus 6.4+/-0.5 ng/mL), tended to increase serum LH (2.6+/-0.27 versus 1.9+/-0.25 ng/mL), and did not modify interovulatory intervals. In Experiment 2, GnRH treatment (2.5-5 microg/h) of persistently anovulatory mares increased (P<0.001) serum LH compared to controls (0.5+/-0.08 versus 0.1+/-0.03 ng/mL), with all GnRH-treated and no Control mares ovulating. Mares exhibiting Delayed Recrudescence (n=29) or Lactational Anovulation (n=18), were assigned randomly in Experiment 3 to receive either (1) GnRH/GnRH (n=23); 2.5 microg GnRH/h for 14 d (Period I) and 5 microg/h during the subsequent 28 d (Periods II and III); or (2) Control/GnRH (n=24); no treatment during Period I (control period) and GnRH treatments as in 1 during Periods II and III. Percentage of mares ovulating and pregnant during Period I was greater (P<0.05) for GnRH-treated than Control mares. Thereafter, cumulative ovulation frequency (85%), pregnancy (72%) and cycles/conception (1.3+/-0.2) were similar between groups; however, interval to conception was reduced (P<0.01) by 10.3 d in GnRH/GnRH compared to Control/GnRH.  相似文献

Objective: To evaluate the effect of a dietary supplement containing herbal caffeine (70 mg/dose) and ephedra (24 mg/dose; C&E) on metabolic rate, weight loss, body composition, and safety parameters. Research Methods and Procedures: In phase I, 12 healthy subjects with a BMI of 25 to 35 kg/m2 had resting metabolic rate (RMR) measured for 2 hours after ingesting C&E or a placebo on two occasions 1 week apart, followed by a 1‐week washout before phase II. In phase II, these 12 and 28 additional subjects were randomized to a 12‐week, double‐blind trial comparing C&E (3 times/day) to placebo. In phase III, the C&E group was given open‐label C&E for 3 months, and the placebo group was given C&E for 6 months. Results: In phase I, C&E gave an average 8 ± 0.1% (SE) rise in RMR over 2 hours compared with placebo (p < 0.01). In phase II, weight loss at 12 weeks was 3.5 ± 0.6 kg with C&E compared with 0.8 ± 0.5 kg with placebo (p < 0.02). The percentage fat lost, shown by DXA, was 7.9 ± 2.9% with C&E and 1.9 ± 1.1% with placebo (p < 0.05). Pulse decreased more in the placebo group that in the C&E group (p < 0.03). There were no differences in lipid levels or blood pressure. In phase III, there was a 6‐month loss of 7.3% and 7.8% of initial body weight for the groups on placebo and C&E during phase II, respectively. There were no serious adverse events. Discussion: C&E increased RMR significantly by 8% compared with placebo, promoted more weight and fat loss than placebo, and was well tolerated.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to estimate the effect of increasing the dietary content of bacterial protein meal (BPM) on energy and protein metabolism in growing mink kits. Sixteen male mink kits of the standard brown genotype were randomly fed one of four diets: A control (Diet I) based on high-quality fish meal, and three experimental diets in which 20% (Diet II), 40% (Diet III) and 60% (Diet IV) of the digested nitrogen (DN) was replaced with BPM. Nitrogen balance and respiration experiments (indirect calorimetry) were carried out when the animals were approximately 9.5, 14.5, 17.5, 23.5 and 28.5 weeks of age. The apparent digestibility of crude protein and energy decreased significantly with increasing dietary BPM. The retained nitrogen was 0.45, 0.54, 0.52 and 0.40 g/kg0.75 on Diets I, II, III and IV, respectively, the observed differences between diets being non-significant (p = 0.06). Heat production (HE) was between 645 and 665 kJ/kg0.75 on all diets (p = 0.78). Retained energy (RE) was approximately 150-160 kJ/kg0.75 on Diets I to III, whereas it was -11 kJ/kg0.75 on Diet IV, the differences being significant (p< 0.001). A lower feed intake and apparent digestibility of energy caused the negative RE on Diet IV. The amount of HE from oxidation of protein decreased from 32.7% on Diet I to 26.6% on Diet IV, and oxidation of fat increased from 53.8% on Diet I to 63.5% Diet IV. In conclusion, protein and energy metabolism remained unaffected when up to 40% of DN was derived from BPM.  相似文献

Polaprezinc (zinc L-carnosine complex) is a tablet commonly prescribed for gastric ulcers in Japan. Recently, we reported the effects of polaprezinc on pressure ulcer healing at 4-week follow-up. We aimed to further evaluate the efficacy and safety of polaprezinc in 8-week treatment for chronic pressure ulcers. Patients with stage II–IV pressure ulcers for ≥8 weeks received 150 mg/day polaprezinc (containing 116 mg L-carnosine and 34 mg zinc) per os for a maximum of 8 weeks. We measured the severity of pressure ulcers weekly using the Pressure Ulcer Scale for Healing (PUSH) score and monitored blood biochemistry. Fourteen patients (nine men; 68.4?±?11.8 years) were enrolled. Pressure ulcer stages were II (one patient; 7 %), III (nine; 64 %), and IV (four; 29 %). The PUSH score improved significantly from 8.1 [95 % CI, 6.0–10.3] at baseline to ?1.4 [?4.0 to 1.1] after 8 weeks (P?<?0.001). Differences from baseline were significant after 1 week (P?<?0.05). The mean weekly improvement in PUSH score was 2.0. Eleven patients healed within 8 weeks and none dropped out. Serum zinc levels increased significantly (P?<?0.001), whereas serum copper levels (P?=?0.001) and copper/zinc ratios (P?<?0.001) decreased significantly. In one patient, preexisting copper deficiency deteriorated. These preliminary data suggest that polaprezinc may be effective and well-tolerated in 8-week treatment of pressure ulcers and could be a candidate for their oral treatment.  相似文献

Theta oscillations are related to cognitive functions and reflect functional integration of frontal and medial temporal structures into coherent neurocognitive networks. This study assessed event-related theta oscillations in medication-free, euthymic patients with bipolar disorder upon auditory oddball paradigm. Twenty-two DSM-IV euthymic bipolar I (n = 19) and II (n = 3) patients and twenty-two healthy subjects were included. Patients were euthymic for at least 6 months, and psychotropic-free for at least 2 weeks. EEG was recorded at 30 electrode sites. Auditory oddball paradigm and sensory stimuli were used. Event-related Oscillations were analyzed using adaptive filtering in two different theta frequency bands (4–6 Hz, 6–8 Hz). In healthy subjects, slow theta (4–6 Hz) responses were significantly higher than those of euthymic patients upon target, non-target and sensory stimuli (p < 0.05). Fast theta (6–8 Hz) responses of healthy subjects were significantly higher than those of euthymic patients upon target-only stimuli (p < 0.05). Reduced theta oscillations during auditory processing provide strong quantitative evidence of activation deficits in related networks in bipolar disorder. Fast theta responses are related to cognitive functions, whereas slow theta responses are related to sensory processes more than cognitive processes.  相似文献
