Sedum perezdelarosae is proposed as a new species from the state of Puebla, Mexico. It belongs to section Pachysedum A. Berger because of its lateral inflorescence, thick leaves and yellow flowers. It seems to be closely related to S. batallae with which it shares its small size and densely aggregated habit. It differs from this species in the larger size of rosette and stem, leaf shape, inflorescences length and color of the corolla.

Pseudomiltemia davidsonii is described and illustrated as a new endemic species from the Sierra Madre of Chiapas, Mexico. It is a shrub or small tree characterized by having flowers axillary and solitary or in monochasia and with large yellow corollas. Pseudomiltemia davidsonii differs from P. filisepala, the only other species in this genus, by its opposite leaves with longer petioles, inflorescences with shorter peduncles 5–13 mm long, smaller bracts, longer pedicels 6–15 mm long, and narrower fruits 3.5–4.5 mm in diameter.

Tibouchina sericea, a new species of Melastomataceae from isolated pine forests of southern Mexico, is described and illustrated. This species resembles the rare T. nanifolia in the short and open pubescence of the stem, and the yellow subisomorphic anthers, but differs in the bullate leaves and the bulla-based hypanthial hairs.

ObjectiveTo collect regional reference values of waist circumference (WC), and waist/hip ratio (WHR) in children and adolescents from Merida, Venezuela, and to compare them to international references.Subjects and methodsA total of 919 students aged 9-17 years from public and private educational establishments were assessed. Weight, height, WC, and WHR were measured. Outliers (± 3 SD Z-Score) were excluded from the data collected. Percentile distribution of the tested variables was done by age and sex.ResultsFifty-one percent of subjects were female, and 52.7% were from public institutions. WC (p = 0.001) and WHR (p = 0.0001) were statistically higher in boys. With advancing age, WC increased in both sexes, while WHR showed the opposite behavior (p = 0.0001 for both). The 90th percentile (pc) for WC ranged from 69.7 and 83.6 cm in girls and from 69.2 and 86.7 cm in boys. The 90th pc values of WHR ranged from 0.79 and 0.91 in girls and from 0.86 and 0.93 in boys. Overall, our WC and WHR values were lower than North American values and similar to those of some Latin American references.ConclusionPercentile reference charts for WC and WHR specific for age and sex, obtained from a representative sample of children and adolescents from Mérida, Venezuela, are provided. They may be used regionally, both for individual assessment and to implement prevention policies.

Corytoplectus (Gesneriaceae) is a neotropical genus of 11 species from South America. Collections recently made in Oaxaca indicate, for the first time, the presence of the genus in Mexico, and a newly described endemic species, C. oaxacensis. This species is most closely resembles C. schlimii which is from Colombia and Venezuela. Geographical distribution of the genus is briefly discussed.

We studied the taxonomy and biogeography of Mazama bricenii, a brocket deer classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN, drawing on qualitative and quantitative morphology and sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome-b gene. We used Ecological Niche Modeling (ENM) to evaluate the hypothesis that M. bricenii of the Venezuelan Cordillera de Mérida (CM) might have become isolated from populations of its putative sister species, Mazama rufina, in the Colombian Cordillera Oriental (CO). This hypothesis assumes that warm, dry climatic conditions in the Táchira Depression were unsuitable for the species. Our analyses did not reveal morphological differences between specimens geographically attributable to M. bricenii and M. rufina, and phylogenetic analyses of molecular data recovered M. bricenii nested within the diversity of M. rufina. These results indicate that M. bricenii should be regarded as a junior synonym of M. rufina. ENM analyses revealed the existence of suitable climatic conditions for M. rufina in the Táchira Depression during the last glacial maximum and even at present, suggesting that gene flow between populations in the CO and CM may have occurred until at least the beginning of the current interglacial period and may continue today. Because this pattern might characterize other mammals currently considered endemic to the CM, we examined which of these species match two criteria that we propose herein to estimate if they can be regarded as endemic to the CM with confidence: (1) that morphological or molecular evidence exists indicating that the putative endemic taxon is distinctive from congeneric populations in the CO; and (2) that the putative endemic taxon is restricted to either cloud forest or páramo, or both. Only Aepeomys reigi, Cryptotis meridensis, and Nasuella meridensis matched both criteria; hence, additional research is necessary to assess the true taxonomic status and distribution of the remaining species thought to be CM endemics.
