The influence of two handling treatments by humans on the behavioral response to the presence of humans, growth performance, and total and free corticosteroid concentrations in the presence and absence of humans was studied in the female pig. The handling treatments, considered as pleasant and unpleasant, were imposed three times per week for 2 min in duration from 11 to 22 weeks of age. Gilts in the unpleasant handling treatment spent less (P < 0.01) time within 0.5 m of the experimenter and displayed fewer (P < 0.01) interactions with the experimenter in a 3-min test conducted at 25 weeks of age. In addition, gilts in this treatment had a slower (P < 0.05) growth rate from 11 to 22 weeks of age and had higher (P < 0.001 and P < 0.01) corticosteroid concentrations at rest and in response to the presence of the experimenter, respectively, at 24 weeks of age. It was concluded that the unpleasant handling treatment resulted in both chronic and acute stress responses.  相似文献

The influence of three handling treatments on the behaviour, reproduction and free corticosteroid concentrations was studied in 15 male and 30 female pigs. Two handling treatments, considered as pleasant and unpleasant, were imposed for 5 min, three times per week from 11 weeks of age. The third handling treatment involved minimal contact with humans from 11 weeks of age. In a 3-min test at 18 weeks, pigs in the pleasant treatment were quicker (P<0.01) to enter an area within 0.5 m of the experimenter and had more interactions (P<0.05) with the experimenter than pigs in the unpleasant and minimal treatments. Gilts in the unpleasant treatment had a lower (P<0.05) pregnancy rate at the second oestrus when mated to non-experimental boars than gilts in the pleasant treatment (33.3 and 87.5%, respectively). Boars in the unpleasant treatment had smaller (P<0.05) testicles at 23 weeks of age and attained a coordinated mating response at a later age (P<0.05) than boars in the pleasant treatment (53.2 and 63.3 cm2, and 192 and 161 days, respectively). In addition, pigs in the unpleasant treatment had higher (P<0.05) free corticosteroid concentrations in the absence of humans at 20 weeks (gilts) and 27 weeks (boars) than pigs in the pleasant treatment (boars and gilts combined, 2.4 and 1.7 ng ml−1, respectively). For many of the reproductive parameters, the effect of the minimal handling treatment was intermediate to that of the other two treatments. It was concluded that the unpleasant handling treatment resulted in a chronic stress response, with consequent adverse effects on reproduction.  相似文献

Fifty-one silver fox vixens, subjected to three different handling treatments as cubs (no-handling, gentle or forced handling), were studied for long-term effects on behavioural, physiological and production-related parameters in a one and a half year period following the last handling session. As juveniles, the animals were exposed to three different behavioural tests at 18, 22, 28, and 32 weeks of age. Both forcibly and gently handled animals showed reduced fear responses compared with nonhandled controls in test situations involving close contact with humans (P < 0.05). The foxes were tested again as adults at 10, 13, 15, and 18 months of age with the same behavioural tests. It was revealed that forcibly handled animals persistently showed reduced fear responses compared with control animals, both in close contact with humans and when exposed to a novel object, whereas gently handled animals only differed from control animals in one of the tests involving some human contact and when exposed to a novel object (P < 0.05). Significant differences between adult gently handled and forcibly handled animals were found in the “confront’ test involving close human contact. In this test more flight responses were observed in the gently handled group than in the forcibly handled group (P < 0.01). Control animals had significantly larger adrenal weights compared with both forcibly handled animals and gently handled animals at 22 months of age (total mean adrenal weight: controls, 0.62 g; gentle, 0.54 g; forced, 0.54 g, P < 0.05, general linear models). Other physiological measures and production-related parameters such as body weight, body size, gastric ulceration and pelt qualities did not differ between treatments (P > 0.05). Early post-weaning handling made foxes less fearful towards humans. Forced handling seemed somewhat superior to gentle handling as a means to produce animals which, in the long term, adapted better to the farm environment both behaviourally and physiologically. Non-handled control animals suffered from long-term stress as reflected by high levels of fear responses and enlarged adrenals. Thus post-weaning handling may be beneficial in the long term for the wellbeing of farmed foxes. When applied as a management routine, handling had no significant influence on later production-related parameters and was not considered an economic risk.  相似文献

A study was conducted to determine if different handling procedures would affect the behavior, growth and adrenal gland morphology of growing pigs. Sixty-four young gilts (8–10 weeks) in groups of 4 were exposed to one of 4 handling treatments (Positive, Negative, Minimal or Aversive) for 10 weeks. The experimenter entered the Minimal pens only when it was necessary to clean the area. For all other treatments, the experimenter entered the pens for 2 min/day, 5 days a week, in order to impose the treatments. Aversive-treatment pigs were electrically shocked if they failed to avoid the experimenter. To handle pigs in a Positive manner, the experimenter squatted, allowed the pigs to contact the experimenter, and would attempt to scratch the pigs only when they appeared receptive to scratching. A treatment consisting of signals which had previously been evaluated as Negative involved remaining upright, approaching the pigs and reaching toward the pigs' heads with gloved hands. When tested for approach behavior toward a human standing erect in a small arena at 3 weeks and at the end of the trial. Minimal-, Positive- and Negative-treatment pigs approached the human more quickly and interacted with the human more frequently than did the Aversive pigs. Minimal and Positive pigs did not differ in growth rate, but Negative and Aversive pigs gained less during the initial 6 weeks of the trial than did those on the other treatments. Only the Aversive treatment resulted in adrenal morphology (increased area of cortex) which was indicative of chronic stress. It is concluded that if frequent handling of animals is necessary, non-aversive methods should be employed to avoid deleterious growth responses.  相似文献

A knowledge of the influence of behavioural and non-behavioural characteristics of humans on the behavioural responses of pigs to humans is required for the development of approach and handling procedures by stockpersons which achieve and maintain human—animal relationships in which the animals are not fearful of humans.Three experiments were conducted to compare the nature of several possible signals which humans may release when interacting with pigs. The nature of the signals was compared by quantifying the approach behaviour of the pig to the experimenter releasing the appropriate signals in four 3-min tests over an 8-day period. Pigs approached the experimenter significantly more (P < 0.05) when he did not approach, squatted, had bare hands or did not initiate interactions compared with when he did approach, stood erect, had gloved hands or initiated interactions with the pig, respectively.  相似文献

This study examined the influence of three handling treatments, imposed from birth to 8 weeks, on the approach behaviour of 24 pigs to humans at 10–24 weeks of age. Piglets in two treatments, weaning/handling and handling, regularly received human contact, while piglets in the third treatment, no handling, only received human contact during routine husbandry. Piglets in the weaning/handling treatment were artificially reared, while those in the other two treatments remained on the sow until weaning at 4 weeks of age. Pigs in the weaning/handling and handling treatments showed increased approach to a stationary human in six tests from 10 to 24 weeks of age. For example, piglets in the weaning/handling and handling treatments spent more (P<0.01) time within 0.5 m of the human and were quicker (P<0.05) to physically interact with the human than pigs in the no handling treatment. Observations on the sexual behaviour of the boars from 25 to 35 weeks of age indicated that handling had no adverse effects on sexual behaviour. It is concluded that early handling of pigs will influence their behavioural response to humans later in life. Therefore, early handling may be a practical method for man to manipulate the pig's subsequent relationship with humans. The possibility of the existence of a “sensitive period” for “socialization” in pigs is discussed in the light of the present results.  相似文献

The intestinal microbiota and its metabolites appear to be an important factor for gastrointestinal function and health. However, research is still needed to further elaborate potential relationships between nutrition, gut microbiota and host’s health by means of a suitable animal model. The present study examined the effect of two different diets on microbial composition and activity by using the pig as a model for humans. Eight pigs were equally allotted to two treatments, either fed a low-fat/high-fiber (LF), or a high-fat/low-fiber (HF) diet for 7 weeks. Feces were sampled at day 7 of every experimental week. Diet effects on fecal microbiota were assessed using quantitative real-time PCR, DNA fingerprinting and metaproteomics. Furthermore, fecal short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) profiles and ammonia concentrations were determined. Gene copy numbers of lactobacilli, bifidobacteria (P<0.001) and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii (P<0.05) were higher in the LF pigs, while Enterobacteriaceae were more abundant in the HF pigs (P<0.001). Higher numbers of proteins affiliated to Enterobacteriaceae were also present in the HF samples. Proteins for polysaccharide breakdown did almost exclusively originate from Prevotellaceae. Total and individual fecal SCFA concentrations were higher for pigs of the LF treatment (P<0.05), whereas fecal ammonia concentrations did not differ between treatments (P>0.05). Results provide evidence that beginning from the start of the experiment, the LF diet stimulated beneficial bacteria and SCFA production, especially butyrate (P<0.05), while the HF diet fostered those bacterial groups which have been associated with a negative impact on health conditions. These findings correspond to results in humans and might strengthen the hypothesis that the response of the porcine gut microbiota to a specific dietary modulation is in support of using the pig as suitable animal model for humans to assess diet-gut-microbiota interactions.Data are available via ProteomeXchange with identifier PXD003447.  相似文献

It is known that tactile stimulation (TS) during ontogeny modifies brain plasticity and enhances the motor and cognitive skills. Our hypothesis was that early handling including TS would increase play and exploratory behaviour in commercial pigs under standardized test conditions. Piglets from 13 litters were subjected to three handling treatments from 5 to 35 days of age: all the piglets were handled (H), none of the piglets were handled (NH) or half of the piglets in the litter were handled (50/50). At 42 days of age, the pigs’ behaviour was observed in pairs in a novel pen with a ‘toy’ (tug rope). The main results were that more locomotor play was performed by pigs from litters where all or half of them had been handled, whereas social exploratory behaviour was more pronounced in pigs from litters where half of them had been handled. Although behaviour was affected by the interaction of treatment with sex or with weight category, we propose that the handling procedure does seem to have acted to increase locomotor skills and that handling half of the piglets in the litter may have triggered a series of socio-emotional interactions that were beneficial for the whole group.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate with anxiety tests the effect of resveratrol (RSV) on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mouse behavioral performance at the second and fourth week of treatment. Confirmed diabetic mice (>250 mg/dl of glucose in blood after STZ injection) were treated with RSV (RDM, n=12) or control treated (DM, n=12) for 4 weeks. DM and RDM were tested in the Open Field Test (OFT) and Elevated Plus Maze (EPM). In the second week of RSV treatment, a higher grooming frequency (P<0.05) and a lower defecation and rearing frequency (P<0.05) were detected in the OFT in the RDM group compared with the DM. There was a higher grooming frequency (P<0.05) and higher percentage of entries in open arms (P<0.05) in the RDM group than in the DM group in the EPM. However, in the fourth week of RSV treatment, the only effect observed was a higher grooming frequency in the RDM group than in the DM group (P<0.05) in the EPM. In conclusion, RSV treatment in diabetic mice provoked anxiolytic-like effects in both tests (OFT and EPM), and these effects were observed in a short time window (2 weeks). It is suggested that RSV may help diabetic animals to adapt to new stressing and anxiety situations and thus to improve their welfare.  相似文献

The ring finger protein 4 gene (RNF4), which might play a role in fetal germ cell development as well as in oocyte and granulosa cell maturation, was one of the potential candidate genes for reproductive traits. In the present work, we isolated the complete coding sequence of porcine RNF4 gene, identified a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP: T/C) in intron5, and developed a PCR-SacII-RFLP genotyping assay. Association of this SNP with reproductive traits was assessed in three populations with diverse genetic backgrounds. One was Chinese Qingping sows. Another was consisted of crossbred sows derived from Landrace, Large White, Chinese Tongcheng and/or Chinese Meishan (Line DIV). The third is Large White × Meishan (LW × M) F2 slaughtered population. Statistical analysis demonstrated that, in the first parity, the difference between RNF4 genotypes and reproductive traits of both Qingping and Line DIV sows was not significant. In the second and subsequent litters, CC animals in Qingping population had more piglets born (+1.74 piglets) and piglets born alive (+2.02 piglets) than sows with the TT genotype (P < 0.05). Line DIV sows inheriting the CC genotype had additional 0.69 piglets born compared to the TC animals (P < 0.05) in second and subsequent litters. No significant difference was observed between genotypes and reproductive tracts components in F2 animals. In addition, we found RNF4 gene has a significant additive effect on both piglet born and piglet born alive in Qingping animals (P < 0.05). Results here suggested that the RNF4 SNP was significantly associated with litter size in two populations and could be useful in selection for increasing litter size in pigs. Further studies were needed to confirm these preliminary researches.  相似文献

In today's production systems, pigs raised for slaughter are mixed many times, resulting in stress and fighting. The negative consequences of mixing are probably more severe with entire males than with castrates, as they fight more. In this project, we studied a system without castration where entire male pigs met unfamiliar pigs only once. Piglets from two litters were allowed to visit each other from circa 2 weeks of age through an opening between the farrowing pens. Entire males from these litters were kept in intact groups from weaning and onwards, and they were slaughtered pen-wise in intact groups. Control pigs were raised and weaned in their litters and mixed with unknown pigs when moved to the growing–finishing unit. They were slaughtered by split marketing based on individual weight. In total, 96 entire males from 24 litters were studied. Activity and social interactions of pigs were studied by direct observations on three observation occasions per pen for pigs kept in intact groups and four occasions for control pigs. All pigs were inspected for skin lesions during raising and at slaughter. Results showed that fewer pigs in intact groups were resting (17.1% v. 28.5%; P = 0.044) and they showed less aggressive behaviour (16.1 v. 27.7 number of interactions per hour; P = 0.001) than control pigs when moved to the growing–finishing unit. They also got fewer skin lesions compared with control pigs (15 v. 35; P < 0.001). Consequently, control pigs tended to grow slower during the 1st week after mixing; however, growth rate during the whole growing–finishing phase did not differ between treatments (P = 0.205). Control pigs directed more aggressive behaviour towards non-litter mates than towards litter mates during the whole growing–finishing phase, whereas pigs from the other treatment made no difference between litter mates and other familiar pigs. At 67 kg, there was more sexual behaviour (mounting) among control pigs (7.6 v. 3.4; P = 0.033), but after slaughter no differences were found in testis weight or boar taint compounds. At slaughter, more entire males that were slaughtered pen-wise and kept in intact groups were without skin lesions compared with the mixed control pigs (74% v. 13%; P < 0.001). This study shows that the welfare of entire male pigs can be improved by socialising piglets and by keeping them in intact groups during raising and at slaughter.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of choline supplementation on intramuscular fat (IMF) and lipid oxidation in IUGR pigs. Twelve normal body weight (NBW) and twelve intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) newborn piglets were collected and distributed into 4 treatments (Normal: N, Normal+Choline: N+C, IUGR: I, and IUGR+Choline: I+C) with 6 piglets in each treatment. At 23 d of age, NBW and IUGR pigs were fed basal or choline supplemented diets. The results showed that the IUGR pigs had significantly lower (P<0.05) BW as compared with the NBW pigs at 23 d, 73 d, and 120 d of age, however, there was a slight decreased (P>0.05) in BW of IUGR pigs than the NBW pigs at 200 d. Compared with the NBW pigs, pH of meat longissimus dorsi muscle was significantly lower (P<0.05), and the meat color was improved in IUGR pigs. The malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were significantly decreased (P<0.05), while triglyceride (TG) and IMF contents were significantly higher (P<0.05) in the IUGR pigs than the NBW pigs. IUGR up-regulated the mRNA gene expression of fatty acid synthetase (FAS) and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC). Dietary choline significantly increased (P<0.05) the BW at 120d of age, however, significantly decreased (P<0.05) the TG and IMF contents in both IUGR and NBW pigs. FAS and sterol regulatory element-binding proteins 1 (SREBP1) mRNA gene expressions were increased (P<0.05) while the muscle-carnitine palmityl transferase (M-CPT) and peroxisome proliferators-activated receptorγ (PPARγ) mRNA (P<0.05) gene expressions were decreased in the muscles of the IUGR pigs by choline supplementation. Furthermore, choline supplementation significantly increased (P<0.05) the MDA content as well as the O2•¯ scavenging activity in meat of IUGR pigs. The results suggested that IUGR pigs showed a permanent stunting effect on the growth performance, increased fat deposition and oxidative stress in muscles. However, dietary supplementation of choline improved the fat deposition via enhancing the lipogenesis and reducing the lipolysis.  相似文献

Dietary protein levels and cysteamine (CS) supplementation can affect growth performance and protein metabolism of pigs. However, the influence of dietary protein intake on the growth response of CS-treated pigs is unclear, and the mechanisms involved in protein metabolism remain unknown. Hence, we investigated the interactions between dietary protein levels and CS supplementation and the effects of dietary crude protein levels and CS supplementation on protein synthetic and degradative signaling in skeletal muscle of finishing pigs. One hundred twenty barrows (65.84 ± 0.61 kg) were allocated to a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with five replicates of six pigs each. The primary variations were dietary crude protein (CP) levels (14% or 10%) and CS supplemental levels (0 or 700 mg/kg). The low-protein (LP) diets (10% CP) were supplemented with enough essential amino acids (EAA) to meet the NRC AA requirements of pigs and maintain the balanced supply of eight EAA including lysine, methionine, threonine, tryptophan, valine, phenylalanine, isoleucine, and leucine. After 41 days, 10 pigs per treatment were slaughtered. We found that LP diets supplemented with EAA resulted in decreased concentrations of plasma somatostatin (SS) (P<0.01) and plasma urea nitrogen (PUN) (P<0.001), while dietary protein levels did not affect other traits. However, CS supplementation increased the average daily gain (P<0.001) and lean percentage (P<0.05), and decreased the feed conversion ratio (P<0.05) and back fat (P<0.05). CS supplementation also increased the concentrations of plasma insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) (P<0.001), and reduced the concentrations of leptin, SS, and PUN (P<0.001). Increased mRNA abundance of Akt1 and IGF-1 signaling (P<0.001) and decreased mRNA abundance of Forkhead Box O (FOXO) 4 (P<0.01) and muscle atrophy F-box (P<0.001) were observed in pigs receiving CS. Additionally, CS supplementation increased the protein levels for the phosphorylated mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), eIF-4E binding protein 1, and ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (P<0.001). There were no interactions between dietary protein levels and CS supplementation for all traits. In conclusion, dietary protein levels and CS supplementation influenced growth and protein metabolism through independent mechanisms in pigs. In addition, LP diets supplemented with EAA did not affect growth performance and other traits except the concentrations of SS and PUN probably through maintenance of protein synthesis and degradation signaling. Moreover, CS supplementation improved growth performance by increasing plasma IGF-1 concentrations possibly through alterations of mTOR and Akt/FOXO signaling pathways in skeletal muscle of finishing pigs.  相似文献

A total of 48, 21-day-old weaned pigs, was used in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments with the factors being diet type (milk liquid replacer vs. dry feed) and l-arginine (ARG) supplementation (0 vs. 6 g ARG/kg) to test the hypothesis that dietary supplementation with ARG would increase performance of pigs after weaning. Pigs were fed the experimental diets for 10 d (days) after weaning and then transitioned over a 3-d period to a dry Phase II diet fed in meal form devoid of supplemental ARG. The study ended at d 21. There were five replicates (pens) per treatment (a total of 12 pigs per treatment). Blood samples were collected from two pigs per replicate on d 7 and 16 of the experiment, and free amino acids (AA) and plasma urea nitrogen (PUN) levels analysed. Milk-fed pigs outperformed (P<0.001) dry-fed pigs for the first 10 d of the experiment as well as for the total 21-d period. At d 7, milk-fed pigs had higher (P<0.05) levels of most free indispensable and dispensable amino acids in their plasma. In both the milk-fed and dry-fed pigs supplemented with ARG, average daily feed intake (ADFI, P<0.05) and average daily gain (ADG, P<0.05) were increased during the dietary transition period (d 11–14), when pigs were being changed to the Phase II diet. The difference in production in the transition period caused a tendency for ARG-supplemented pigs to eat more feed (P<0.1) and grow faster (P<0.5) over the 21-d experimental period. Pigs supplemented with ARG had higher plasma ARG levels (P<0.05) at d 7 after weaning and lower plasma urea levels (P<0.05) at both d 7 and 16 after weaning. These data show the benefits of feeding a milk liquid diet as well as of ARG supplementation after weaning on production indices.  相似文献

Reduced feed intake and hence lower growth rates commonly occur when the environment of the pig changes, e.g. at weaning and when pigs are moved from growing accommodation to finishing accommodation. It is hypothesised that if environmental factors, such as feeder type, remain the same in the weaning and finishing accommodation this ‘growth check’ may be reduced. A total of 640 pigs in 32 pens of 20 pigs per pen were used to investigate the effects of two feeder types and changing or not changing the feeder type at 10 weeks of age on growth performance and behaviour in the periods from 4 to 10, 10 to finish (22) and from 4 to finish (22) weeks of age, respectively. The two feeder types tested were a ‘wet and dry’ single-space (S) feeder and a ‘dry’ multi-space feeder (M).In the period 4–10 weeks of age feeder type had no significant effect on growth performance though pigs on the ‘dry’ multi-space feeder tended to exhibit significantly better feed efficiency from 4 to 7 weeks of age. In the first week after changing accommodation the growth rate of pigs on all treatments was depressed (compared to the last 3 weeks of the grower period) and was reduced a further 60 g/day when the feeder type was changed. However, the “feeder” effect was transitory and had no effect on overall finisher performance except for pigs changed from a ‘dry’ multi-space feeder to ‘wet and dry’ single-spaced feeder. These animals had significantly faster growth rate over the finisher phase (P<0.05, 886 g/day) and between 4 weeks of age and finish (P<0.05, 730 g/day) than pigs on all other treatments. Feeder treatment had no significant effect on feed intake or feed efficiency in the finisher period or overall from wean to finish. Similarly, the treatments had no effect on the variation in growth rate. Behavioural observations showed that the average number of pigs at the feeder during the finishing period was significantly higher when feed was offered from treatment M–S (1.19 (freq/30 s), P<0.001). In conclusion, the present results suggest that, a change in feeder type, from a ‘dry’ multi-space feeder in growing accommodation to a ‘wet and dry’ single-space feeder in finishing accommodation appears to stimulate improved growth performance in the early finishing period and overall from weaning to finish.  相似文献

In rodents, fasting increases the carnitine concentration in the liver by an up-regulation of enzymes of hepatic carnitine synthesis and novel organic cation transporter (OCTN) 2, mediated by activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) α. This study was performed to investigate whether such effects occur also in pigs which like humans, as nonproliferating species, have a lower expression of PPARα and are less responsive to treatment with PPARα agonists than rodents. An experiment with 20 pigs was performed, which were either fed a diet ad-libitum or fasted for 24 h. Fasted pigs had higher relative mRNA concentrations of the PPARα target genes carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 and acyl-CoA oxidase in liver, heart, kidney, and small intestinal mucosa than control pigs, indicative of PPARα activation in these tissues (P<.05). Fasted pigs had a higher activity of γ-butyrobetaine dioxygenase (BBD), enzyme that catalyses the last step of carnitine biosynthesis in liver and kidney, and higher relative mRNA concentrations of OCTN2, the most important carnitine transporter, in liver, kidney, skeletal muscle, and small intestinal mucosa than control pigs (P<.05). Fasted pigs moreover had higher concentrations of free and total carnitine in liver and kidney than control pigs (P<.05). This study shows for the first time that fasting increases the activity of BBD in liver and kidney and up-regulates the expression of OCTN2 in various tissues of pigs, probably mediated by PPARα activation. It is concluded that nonproliferating species are also able to cover their increased demand for carnitine during fasting by an increased carnitine synthesis and uptake into cells.  相似文献

Piglet neonatal diarrhoea is an important issue in modern pig production and is linked to increased mortality and poor growth rates, affecting long-term pig health, increasing use of medication and cost of production. Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii (SB) is a probiotic yeast with documented clinical efficacy in the prevention and treatment of diarrhoeal diseases in humans. The objectives of the current study were to evaluate the effect of SB on occurrence and severity of neonatal diarrhoea in piglets, mortality and growth rate. Forty-six litters (606 piglets) were randomly allocated to a control or SB treatment (n=23 per treatment). Within 24 h of farrowing, piglets assigned to the SB treatment received a single oral dose of a paste containing 3.3×109 CFU of SB CNCM I-1079. Piglets from the control litters received a placebo paste. Piglet weight, mortality and diarrhoea were recorded up to day 7 of age. It was shown that numbers of diarrhoea days were significantly correlated with increased mortality rate and reduced weight gain (P<0.05). SB treatment had no effect on growth or mortality in diarrhoeic litters. However, SB-supplemented litters had significantly lower faecal scores, indicating firmer faeces (P<0.01) and fewer numbers of diarrhoeic days (P<0.01) during the 1st week of life. Reduction in the number of diarrhoeic litters compared with the control group was observed following the probiotic administration (P<0.05). These results highlight the detrimental effects of neonatal diarrhoea on pre-weaning performance and suggest that SB, by reducing diarrhoea duration and severity, has the potential of improving enteric health in the early stages of life in pigs.  相似文献

Animal models of obesity and metabolic dysregulation during growth (or childhood) are lacking. Our objective was to increase adiposity and induce metabolic syndrome in young, genetically lean pigs. Pre-pubertal female pigs, age 35 d, were fed a high-energy diet (HED; n = 12), containing 15% tallow, 35% refined sugars and 9.1–12.9% crude protein, or a control corn-based diet (n = 11) with 12.2–19.2% crude protein for 16 wk. Initially, HED pigs self-regulated energy intake similar to controls, but by wk 5, consumed more (P<0.001) energy per kg body weight. At wk 15, pigs were subjected to an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT); blood glucose increased (P<0.05) in control pigs and returned to baseline levels within 60 min. HED pigs were hyperglycemic at time 0, and blood glucose did not return to baseline (P = 0.01), even 4 h post-challenge. During OGTT, glucose area under the curve (AUC) was higher and insulin AUC was lower in HED pigs compared to controls (P = 0.001). Chronic HED intake increased (P<0.05) subcutaneous, intramuscular, and perirenal fat deposition, and induced hyperglycemia, hypoinsulinemia, and low-density lipoprotein hypercholesterolemia. A subset of HED pigs (n = 7) was transitioned back to a control diet for an additional six weeks. These pigs were subjected to an additional OGTT at 22 wk. Glucose AUC and insulin AUC did not improve, supporting that dietary intervention was not sufficient to recover glucose tolerance or insulin production. These data suggest a HED may be used to increase adiposity and disrupt glucose homeostasis in young, growing pigs.  相似文献

The ability of alternate‐day fasting (ADF) to modulate adipocyte parameters in a way that is protective against coronary heart disease (CHD) has yet to be tested. Accordingly, we examined the effects of ADF on adipokine profile, body composition, and CHD risk indicators in obese adults. Sixteen obese subjects (12 women/4 men) participated in a 10‐week trial with three consecutive dietary intervention phases: (i) 2‐week baseline control phase, (ii) 4‐week ADF controlled feeding phase, and (iii) 4‐week ADF self‐selected feeding phase. After 8 weeks of treatment, body weight and waist circumference were reduced (P < 0.05) by 5.7 ± 0.9 kg, and 4.0 ± 0.9 cm, respectively. Fat mass decreased (P < 0.05) by 5.4 ± 0.8 kg, whereas fat‐free mass did not change. Plasma adiponectin was augmented (P < 0.05) by 30% from baseline. Leptin and resistin concentrations were reduced (P < 0.05) by 21 and 23%, respectively, post treatment. Low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL‐C) and triacylglycerol concentrations were 25% and 32% lower (P < 0.05), respectively, after 8 weeks of ADF. High‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL‐C), C‐reactive protein, and homocysteine concentrations did not change. Decreases in LDL‐C were related to increased adiponectin (r = ?0.61, P = 0.01) and reduced waist circumference (r = 0.39, P = 0.04). Lower triacylglycerol concentrations were associated with augmented adiponectin (r = ?0.39, P = 0.04) and reduced leptin concentrations (r = 0.45, P = 0.03) post‐treatment. These findings suggest that adipose tissue parameters may play an important role in mediating the cardioprotective effects of ADF in obese humans.  相似文献

Objectives:The study aimed to determine the effect of adding a school-based plyometric training program (PMT) to physical education (PE) sessions on the strength, balance, and flexibility in primary school girls. Methods:Students from grades 3-6 were randomized equally to a plyometric or control group. In the control group, students took their regular PE classes twice a week. In the plyometric group, students performed PMT twice a week during the initial 20 minutes of every PE session. The Lido Linea closed kinetic chain isokinetic dynamometer, Star excursion balance test (SEBT), and sit-and-reach test were used to assess muscle strength, balance, and flexibility, respectively, before and after nine weeks of training. Results:The improvement in extension peak force (p=0.04) and extension total work (p<0.001) was more prevalent in the PMT group than in the control group. SEBT scores had improved significantly (p<0.05) for all directions in the PMT group, except in the anterior direction, which was highly significant (p<0.001). Hamstring and lower back flexibility had improved more in the PMT group than in the control group (p<0.001).Conclusion:Adding PMT to regular PE classes has a positive and notable effect on muscle strength, balance, and flexibility in primary school students.  相似文献
