Poecilobdella viridis was used to study the variations in the biochemical parameters: body protein, glycogen and water, following warm (32.0° ± 0.5°C) and cold (10.0° ± 0.5°C) acclimation for 5, 10, 15 and 30 days. The percentage of glycogen decreased significantly (p < 0.05) during both warm and cold acclimation whereas the protein percentage increased significantly (p < 0.05). The percentage of water was significantly (p < 0.05). reduced during both acclimation processes. Ecophysiological significance of these alterations to leeches, in counteracting the ambient thermal fluxes, has been briefly discussed.  相似文献

Annual reproductive cycle of the protandrous hermaphroditic freshwater leech, Poecilobdella viridis has been traced from August 1974 to July 1975. Spermatogenesis initiated a little earlier than oogenesis. The reproductive programme is as follows; commencement of spermatogenesis in February followed by oogenesis in March. Breeding begins in late March extending upto late May and early June while breeding terminated towards late June. From August to January reproductive quiescence was observed. Among the environmental factors temperature, possibly coupled with photoperiod, plays a key role in synchronising the reproductive cycle.  相似文献

The effect of brain homogenate of warm and cold acclimated leeches on the respiration of normal Poecilobdella viridis has been investigated. Homogenate of brain from warm acclimated leeches significantly (p < 0.05) decreased oxygen consumption rates over those of normal homogenate injections. Oxygen uptake values were significantly (p < 0.0 1) enhanced following the administration of brain homogenate of cold acclimated leeches. Hence, existence of two separate oxygen consumption controlling factors, possibly hormones, in the brain of P. viridis during thermal acclimation, is inferred.  相似文献

Ability of the freshwater leech, Poecilobdella viridis to withstand osmotic changes was investigated by following the fluctuations of the body weight in tap-water and in different salt concentrations. The salinity tolerance limit (lethal salt concentration) of this leech was found to be 1.54% NaCl which equilibrates approximately 51.359% sea-water. There was a significant weight loss in P. viridis when kept in both, hypo- and hypertonic media. It is concluded that volume regulation (through weight changes) was slight in hypotonic media whereas in hypertonic media there was an incessant decline in body weight. Adaptive significance of these findings is discussed.  相似文献

Leeches maintained either in tap-water or under desiccated conditions show a continuous decline in body-weight. Debrained leeches show a significantly greater loss of weight than unoperated or sham-operated controls. Injections of brain homogenate (0.2 ml/leech = 3 brains/leech) significantly (p<0.01) reduces weight loss in debrained leeches, whereas saline injections are without effect. The results indicate that water (weight) loss is influenced by a neurosecretory hormone secreted by the brain of Poecilobdella viridis.

The significant influence of thermal acclimation on physiological and behavioral performance has been documented in many ectothermic animals, but such studies are still limited in turtle species. We acclimated hatchling soft-shelled turtles Pelodiscus sinensis under three thermal conditions (10, 20 and 30~C) for 4 weeks, and then measured selected body temperature (Tsel), critical thermal minimum (CTMin) and maximum (CTM~x), and locomotor performance at different body temperatures. Thermal acclimation significantly affected thermal preference and resistance of P sinensis hatchlings. Hatchling turtles accli- mated to 10~C selected relatively lower body temperatures and were less resistant to high temperatures than those acclimated to 20~C and 30~C. The turtles' resistance to low temperatures increased with a decreasing acclimation temperature. The thermal re- sistance range (i.e. the difference between CTM~x and CTMin, TRR) was widest in turtles acclimated to 20~C, and narrowest in those acclimated to 10~C. The locomotor performance of turtles was affected by both body temperature and acclimation tem- perature. Hatchling turtles acclimated to relatively higher temperatures swam faster than did those acclimated to lower temperatures. Accordingly, hatchling turtles acclimated to a particular temperature may not enhance the performance at that temperature. Instead, hatchlings acclimated to relatively warm temperatures have a better performance, supporting the "hotter is better" hypothesis.  相似文献

The possible role of a brain hormone in oogenesis of Poecilobdella viridis has been investigated by brain extirpation and brain extract injections during non-reproductive (November to January) and reproductive (March to May) periods. Brain extirpation during the non-reproductive period ceased maturation of the ovary. It is inferred that brain secretion bears possibly a gonadotropic principle which governs and regulates the oogenesis during the annual reproductive cycle.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of acute and acclimation temperature on the locomotor performance and behavior of the tardigrade Macrobiotus harmsworthi collected from Qinling Mountains in central China. Tardigrades were acclimated to either 10 or 25 °C for 2 weeks. Then we recorded their walking speed, percentage of time moving, and the maximum distance covered by continuous locomotion at either 10 or 25 °C as the rate parameters of locomotor performance. The walking speeds of M. harmsworthi varied from 1.98 to 4.8 mm min–1. The locomotor performance rates were significantly influenced by both acclimation temperature and performance temperature and by the interaction of the performance temperature and acclimation temperature. The data from our studies support the Beneficial Acclimation Hypothesis (BAH) which predicts that animals acclimated to a particular temperature have enhanced performance or fitness at that temperature in comparison with animals acclimated to other temperatures. The data, at least potentially, also support the Warmer is Better Hypothesis which predicts that organisms raised at high temperatures have higher relative fitness across all temperatures than do those raised at intermediate or cool temperatures. Some of the results from our studies testify the inference from the BAH that performance temperature that deviates from the acclimation temperature could cause the reduction of the locomotor performance rate.  相似文献

Barbronia weberi were collected from Hydrilla verticillata purchased from aquarium suppliers in Melbourne, Australia and additional B. weberi were obtained from aquatic plants in Canberra, ACT, Australia. Adult leeches fed Tubifex sp. ad libitum successfully reproduced under laboratory conditions (21 ± 5?°C ). Reproductively mature B. weberi produced cocoons every week for up to three months at which time the adults began to senesce. Cocoons contained one to five (barx=2.41±0.78 SD, N=58) eggs with juveniles leaving the cocoon within 27 ± 3.4 SD days (N=13) of cocoon production. Juvenile B. weberi reached reproductive maturity within four months (N=7) of hatching and had a maximum growth rate of 1.10 mm2 d?1 once they left the cocoon at around 30 days. Individual egg volume (r=0.63, scaling exponent = 1.21) and cocoon volume (r=0.65, scaling exponent = 1.24) showed a significant (P<0.001) and nearly isometric relationship when scaled with maternal body size. Because this species can grow rapidly and produce a large number of eggs over a short period of time and can piggyback with plant species and travel through the aquarium trade, there is potential for B. weberi to rapidly invade new localities.  相似文献

Juvenile axolotls were acclimated to 15○C or 25○C and either fed or fasted at both temperatures, to study the interaction of thermal acclimation and nutritional state on metabolism. Fasting but not thermal acclimation significantly increased oxygen consumption at 15○C. Fasting also increased the specific activities of two oxidative metabolic enzymes – citrate synthase and cytochrome oxidase – but not that of the glycolytic enzyme lactic dehydrogenase. The specific activity of cytochrome oxidase was further stimulated by cold acclimation. Triglycerides and fatty acids were severely depleted in fasted animals, but thermal acclimation had no significant effect on lipid stores. This study illustrates: (1) the differential nature of various metabolic responses to fasting; and (2) the confounding interaction of the nutritional state on thermal acclimation experiments in an ectotherm.  相似文献

The population of Undaria pinnatifida in its ecologic niche sustains itself in high temperature summer in the form of vegetative gametophytes, the haploid stage in its heteromorphic life cycle. Gametogenesis initiates when seawater temperature drops below the threshold levels in autumn in the northern hemisphere. Given that the temperature may fall into the appropriate range for gametogenesis, the level of irradiance determines the final destiny of a gametophytic cell, either undergoing vegetative cell division or initiating gametogenesis. In elucidating how vegetatively propagated gametophytes cope with changes of irradiance in gametogenesis, we carried out a series of culture experiments and found that a direct exposure to irradiance as high as 270 μmol photons m?2 s?1 was lethal to dim‐light (7–10 μmol photons m?2 s?1) adapted male and female gametophytes. This lethal effect was linearly corelated with the exposure time. However, dim‐light adapted vegetative gametophytes were shown to be able tolerate as high as 420 μmol photons m?2 s?1 if the irradiance was steadily increased from dim light levels (7–10 μmol photons m?2 s?1) to 90, 180 and finally 420 μmol photons m?2 s?1, respectively, at a minimum of 1–3 h intervals. Percentage of female gametophytic cells that turned into oogonia and were eventually fertilized was significantly higher if cultured at higher but not lethal irradiances. Findings of this investigation help to understand the dynamic changes of population size of sporophytic plants under different light climates at different site‐specific ecologic niches. It may help to establish specific technical details of manipulation of light during mass production of seedlings by use of vegetatively propagated gametophytes.  相似文献

The learning behaviour and memory formation of ectotherms, especially of fish, depend significantly on the acclimation temperature. Although temperature is known to affect different physiological factors in the nervous system, the exact manner in which memory and learning are affected by these alterations is not clear. Large variations in the acclimation time before learning takes place, are striking. With regard to long-lasting compensatory changes in the polarity of membrane-bound neuronal gangliosides (1) and in the bio-electrical activity of the CNS (post-synaptic potential amplitudes (2)) following thermal acclimation it was of interest to investigate the time course of acclimation on the learning ability of fish subjected to a new environmental temperature.  相似文献

Annual changes in the brain neurosecretory profile of Poecilobdella viridis in relation to reproductive activity have been investigated. The changes in A cell neurosecretory activities were found to be in strong correlative correspondence with the reproductive programme. Heavy accumulation of neurosecretory material was observed in A cells perikarya during the reproductive period i.e. from March to June, 1975, with enlarged nuclei and during reproductive quiescence i.e. from August, 1974 to January 1975, the neurosecretory activity was low.  相似文献

Glossiphonia heteroclita has paired ovaries whose shape and dimensions change as oogenesis proceeds: during early previtellogenesis they are small and club-shaped, whereas during vitellogenesis they broaden and elongate considerably. During early oogenesis (previtellogenesis), each ovary is composed of an outer envelope (ovisac) that surrounds the ovary cavity and is filled with hemocoelomic fluid, in which a single and very convoluted ovary cord is bathed. The ovary cord consists of germline cells, including nurse cells and young oocytes surrounded by a layer of elongated follicle cells. Additionally, follicle cells with long cytoplasmic projections occur inside the ovary cord, where they separate germ cells from each other. The ovary cord contains thousands of nurse cells. Each nurse cell has one intercellular bridge, connecting it to a central anucleate cytoplasmic mass, the cytophore (rachis); it in turn is connected by one intercellular bridge with each growing oocyte. Numerous mitochondria, RER cisternae, ribosomes, and Golgi complexes are transported from the nurse cells, via the intercellular bridge and cytophore, to the growing oocytes. Oogenesis in G. heteroclita is synchronous with all oocytes in the ovary in the same stage of oogenesis. The youngest observed oocytes are slightly larger than nurse cells, and usually occupy the periphery of the ovary cord. As previtellogenesis proceeds, the oocytes gather a vast amount of cell organelles and become more voluminous. As a result, in late previtellogenesis the oocytes gradually protrude into the ovary cavity. Simultaneously with oocyte growth, the follicle cells differentiate into two subpopulations. The morphology of the follicle cells surrounding the nurse cells and penetrating the ovary cord does not change, whereas those enveloping the growing oocytes become more voluminous. Their plasma membrane invaginates deeply, forming numerous broad vesicles that eventually seem to form channels or conducts through which the hemocoelomic fluid can easily access the growing oocytes.  相似文献

Spodoptera frugiperda is a highly invasive pest species that recently invaded Africa and Asia causing severe economic losses, primarily related to corn and rice crops. Temperature is one of the most important environmental factors that influence the invasion of pests into new habitats. However, little is known regarding the thermal tolerance characteristics of invasive S. frugiperda. Thus, we investigated the response of four developmental stages of S. frugiperda (i.e., eggs, third and sixth instar larvae, and pupae) to cold acclimation (CA) and rapid cold-hardening (RCH). All individuals suffered high mortality with 24-h temperature treatments at <?5°C and >35 °C. The CA treatment significantly increased the survival rate of the eggs and third instar larvae, although it did not affect the sixth instar larvae and it decreased the pupation rate. The RCH treatment at 5 °C for 5 h or 2 °C for 2 h increased the cold tolerance capabilities of the third and sixth instar larvae, respectively. Thus, the larval stage appears to be crucial for the cold tolerance of S. frugiperda. Our findings improve the current understanding of the cold tolerance characteristics of S. frugiperda and indicate its potential for survival in the newly invaded temperate regions of Asia.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of the Glossiphoniidae leech Helobdella stagnalis, under laboratory conditions, the structure of its eggs and its developmental stages were studied. Sperm transfer and insemination are made by hypodermic injection: one or numerous spermatophores were attached to the skin of the partner during copulation and sperm is injected through it. The leeches can copulate repeatedly with several partners. Each leech produces 4–8 cocoons containing 20–60 eggs whose are attached to the ventral side of the parent and carried around. At 22 °C, the developmental duration is 24 days from the oviposition until the juveniles leave the parent leech. Three (3) major stages have been distinguished: Eggs cleavage, germinal band generation, and juveniles hatching. The sexual behavior of Hellobdella stagnalis was described with a special attention given to parental care.  相似文献

Abstract. The ultrastructure of the male gonad of Eulimnadia texana (Branchiopoda, Spinicaudata) has been observed for the first time to investigate the sexuality of a well-studied case of androdioecy in the animal kingdom. The male gonad is a double structure located in the hemocoel throughout the entire body length on each side of the midgut. Male gametes originate from the wall and mature centripetally toward the lumen; the proliferative activity is very high and continuous and therefore the mature gonad is full of numerous germ cells. Inside the lumen several degenerative stages are found mixed with sperm cells and spermatids, the latter two being not easily distinguishable because of the slight differences between them. The evolutionary meaning of the degenerative process in E. texana male gametes is difficult to explain, and we propose some hypotheses about its possible role or cause in the studied population: (a) to help build spermatophores, (b) to act as a trophic component for viable sperm, (c) as a manifestation of inbreeding depression, and/or (d) to regulate the number of sperm cells.  相似文献

An ultrastructural analysis of the gametogenetic phases in Branchiura sowerbyi, a tubificid oligochaete, has been accomplished. These phases mostly conform to the usual pattern for the family, however, some interesting peculiarities are pointed out.
