Twelve new experimental ponds were constructed identically, filled simultaneously, had similar physical and chemical properties, and were maintained with minimal manipulation. Colonizing zooplankton communities were sampled bi-weekly for one year. Rotifers dominated zooplankton communities in densities, biomass, and species number (47 of 61 observed species were rotifers). Only 14 species were observed in all 12 ponds; 9 were rotifers. Twenty-nine species (26 rotifers) were recorded in <-6 ponds. Species with high vagility exhibited greater viability. Ponds differed in zooplankton community composition throughout the year, due to differences in both vagility and viability among colonizing species.  相似文献

Lentic community structure varies across a size gradient of ponds and lakes with physical factors, such as pond drying, and biotic factors, such as fish predation, determining the species assemblage. We studied the effects of pond drying and fish absence on crustacean zooplankton across a gradient of pond sizes in a Texas grassland. We determined the species compositions and size distributions of crustacean zooplankton in 20 temporary and 18 permanent ponds in April after March rains had refilled the ponds. The surface areas of temporary and permanent ponds ranged from <0.01 to 0.21 ha and 0.04 to 13.8 ha, respectively, and temporary ponds were significantly smaller, on average, than permanent ponds. Fish were absent from all temporary ponds and present in all permanent ponds. We detected a difference in the zooplankton species assemblages of the temporary and permanent ponds. Out of 14 total zooplankton taxa that occurred in eight or more ponds, seven taxa were significantly more prevalent in temporary ponds and four taxa were significantly more prevalent in permanent ponds. The sizes of zooplankton in the temporary fishless ponds were greater than those in the permanent ponds with fish present. We concluded that pond size mediated susceptibility to pond drying, and pond drying determined the presence and absence of fish and their secondary trophic-level effect on zooplankton community structure. Zooplankton abundance and diversity in Central Florida grass carp ponds   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0  
The effect of the Asian grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella Val.) upon the zooplankton in three adjacent experimental ponds (0.139 ha each) was studied for one year. The ponds contained nine species of aquatic macrophytes. Grass carp were stocked into Pond 1 (65 per ha) and Pond 2 (611 per ha) three months after the study was started. At the time of stocking, physichochemical and biological parameters were similar among the ponds.Grass carp did not affect water quality and had little direct or indirect effect upon the zooplankton in the ponds. The abundance and species diversity of zooplankton (number of species, Shannon Index, and Simpson Index) were not significantly different (P < 0.05) between ponds prior to grass carp stocking. After stocking with grass carp, the number of species and species diversity were found to be significantly different (P < 0.05) between Pond 1 (low grass carp stocking rate) and Pond 2 (high grass carp stocking rate). Additionally, significant differences (P < 0.05) in populations between ponds were found for Lecane luna, Monostyla bulla, Lepadella ehrenbergii, Polyarthra sp., and Synchaeta sp. Temporal variation rather than grass carp was probably responsible for those differences. The number of zooplankton per group (Rotifera, Cladocera, and Copepoda) and species diversity were not significantly different (P<0.05) between ponds containing different stocking rates of grass carp.During the study, zooplankton were collected with a shallow-water sampler. No significant differences (P < 0.05) between collections were found for the sampler and a No. 20 mesh nylon zooplankton net.  相似文献

Small ponds ( ≤ 2 ha) are often a common landscape feature, but their ecology has been less well studied than that of lakes. Studies of some lakes and reservoirs show among-year repeatability in the seasonal abundance of different zooplankton (i.e., succession). For small ponds the seasonal dynamics of zooplankton community structure are relatively unstudied, as are any mechanisms underlying these dynamics. We took a community-level approach to studying the spring–summer abundance of zooplankton in two small Ohio ponds. In particular we wanted to know if repeatable patterns exist for zooplankton community structure in these ponds. We surveyed the spring–summer zooplankton communities in the ponds from 2001 to 2003 and used community-level ordination techniques (i.e., non-metric multidimensional scaling, NMDS) to characterize the assemblages. For both ponds the seasonal pattern of total zooplankton abundance differed significantly among years. We found that the proportional abundance of taxa across the season also varied among years. Elements of the zooplankton community, as described by the NMDS dimensions, showed among-year variation in the spring–summer trajectories that developed. Some of the variation in these zooplankton communities was associated with seasonal changes in water temperature. This among-year variation in the seasonal pattern of zooplankton community structure suggests that community dynamics in these small ponds may not be very repeatable. These complex dynamics of zooplankton thus challenges us to improve our characterization of zooplankton communities in small ponds such that we can better understand the factors that drive the patterns we observe.  相似文献

Zooplankton samples were collected from 7 borrow-pit ponds during the summer months of 1975 in northern Illinois. Species diversity indices and evenness values were used to characterize the ponds zooplankton community structure. Thirty-one plankton species are reported. Older borrow-pit ponds contained more species and had higher mean densities than did the newer ponds. The number of dominant species reported per pond varied from 1 to 4. Species diversity indices are higher in older ponds, and there was a general tendency for species diversity to increase with pond age. No correlations between physicochemical measurements and the structure of the zooplankton communities were found. Factors possibly governing zooplankton community structure in borrow-pits are speculated upon.  相似文献

珠三角高产养殖池塘浮游动物群落结构及水质评价   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
为进一步了解珠三角高产池塘养殖环境状况, 分析珠三角高产池塘浮游动物群落特征及与池塘水质的相关性, 研究于2016年7—8月对珠三角地区6种主要高产养殖模式30口池塘的浮游动物和环境因子进行了调查。研究结果表明: (1)共采集浮游动物55种, 其中原生动物17种、轮虫29种、枝角类4种、桡足类5种。6种养殖模式池塘中, 大口黑鲈S池塘浮游动物种类数最多, 为34种; 草鱼池塘最少, 为18种。(2)30口池塘共记录优势种8种, 其中原生动物和轮虫各4种, 枝角类和桡足类均不占优势。在6种养殖模式池塘中, 优势种也仅包括原生动物和轮虫, 优势种种类数变化范围为5—8种。(3)30口池塘浮游动物平均密度和生物量均较高, 分别为21354 ind./L和9.36 mg/L。方差分析结果表明6种养殖模式池塘浮游动物密度和生物量均不存在显著差异。(4)RDA分析结果表明, TP和pH是影响珠三角池塘浮游动物分布的主要因素。采用浮游动物丰度和生物量对水质的评价结果显示, 6种养殖模式池塘均处于富营养化状态; 运用Shannon-Wiener多样性指数和Margalef多样性指数对水质的评价结果表明, 6种模式养殖池塘均处于α-中污状态, 且以草鱼池塘的污染最为严重。本研究首次利用浮游动物对珠三角高产池塘进行水质评价, 研究结果可为池塘生态修复和管理提供一定的指导意见。  相似文献

Summary Data sets from existing limnological surveys carried out on Australian zooplankton communities are examined, and co-occurrences of species in the centropagid copepod genera Boeckella and Calamoecia are tabulated. One experiment to determine the extent of mating errors among four species of Boeckella is performed. The data are examined with respect to the hypotheses that mating errors of similar sized copepods preclude co-occurrence and that competition for resources by similar size species preclude occurrence. It is concluded that neither hypothesis is valid, instead, that co-occurrence patterns among these Australian centropagids are a function of dispersal and colonization ability, and that zooplankton species composition in Australian lakes and ponds is probably in a state of disequilibrium.  相似文献

The current study was to explore the seasonal variation in the zooplankton and aquatic macroinvertebrate population in India’s oldest and largest sewage fed fish ponds of East Kolkata Wetlands and whether they show different trends from the natural ponds. Zooplankton diversity was significantly higher in fish ponds whereas macroinvertebrate diversity was higher in natural ponds. Zooplanktons showed significant seasonal variation in the natural ponds but did not show any variation throughout the year in sewage fed fisheries. Among zooplankton species Brachionus spp., Keratella tropica which are pollution (eutrophy) indicator were found in greater abundance in EKW fisheries than natural ponds. Chironomid larvae which thrive and flourish in highly organically polluted or eutrophicated waters were dominant in EKW. The regular input of sewage provides a certain high level of nutrient to the fisheries which help to maintain greater and consistent population density and diversity of zooplanktons forming a strong base for the food webs in the EKW ponds.  相似文献

Herbivorous zooplankton may have a pronounced influence on pelagicmicroorganisms in Arctic freshwaters. We quantified experimentallythe size-selective feeding of several zooplankton groups onpelagic microorganisms in high Arctic tundra systems. Our experimentsand field study focused on dominant herbivores in Arctic freshwaters,including the cladoceran Daphnia, the copepod Diaptomus andthe anostracan Branchinecta, and their effects on prey rangingin size from bacteria to large phytoplankton. Grazing experimentsshowed that Daphnia were effective predators on all types ofprey, whereas Diaptomus grazed preferentially on larger phytoplanktonwith low clearance rates for bacterial cells. Further analysisby flow cytometry indicated that Diaptomus grazed selectivelyon the largest bacteria. In contrast to the results obtainedin the controlled experiments, Arctic lakes and ponds with azooplankton community dominated by Daphnia had a higher bacterialproduction and abundance than systems not dominated by thisgrazer. This may indicate that the stimulatory effect of grazerson bacterial growth is more pronounced in natural systems, orthat factors other than zooplankton grazing are more importantin regulating bacterial abundance and production in naturalsystems. Although Arctic waters differ considerably from temperatesystems with respect to temperature and light regime, herbivore–preydynamics as well as the bacterial response to temperature appearto be similar between the climatic regions.  相似文献

Food of sterile triploid bighead carp, Hypophthalmichthys nobilis , was examined in ponds receiving water from a hypereutrophic take in Florida. No distinctive seasonal changes in food composition were found. The fish fed selectively on Botryococcus braunii Kuetzing, a large nuisance algal species, which constituted 61% of the volume and 50% of the dry weight of the food. Zooplankton was highly selected, but constituted only 3% of the food volume because of the low zooplankton density in the ponds. The remaining proportion of food consisted mainly of blue-green algae. Final fish biomass was low, ranging from 60 to 97 kg ha−1 in individual ponds. Low biomass was due to slow fish growth and high fish mortality. Despite low biomass, the fish lowered the ratio of blue-green/green algae in the ponds and tended to lower phyto- and zooplankton abundance.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. In 1982 and 1983 sets of experimental ponds were left with their submerged plant communities intact (plant ponds) or were cleared manually of them (cleared ponds). The ponds were all fertilized with ammonium nitrate and with variable amounts of phosphate. In 1982 fish were removed from the ponds. Zooplankton communities were dominated by large Cladocera with Daphnia prominent in the cleared ponds and Simocephalus in the plant ponds. There was no detectable effect of differential phosphorus additions on zooplankton communities or populations.
2. In 1983 zooplanktivorous fish (mainly roach) were stocked in the ponds. In the plant ponds the fish did not survive, probably through severe deoxygenation and the zooplankton community again included large-bodied Simocephalus. Fish survival was variable in the cleared ponds. Where fish stocks were absent or low (0.5–1 g m−2) a Daphnia- dominated community persisted; at intermediate fish stocks (18.1 g m−2) Eudiaptomus gracilis was predominant and where fish stock was high (22.8–29.1 g m−2) Bosmina longirostris , and cyclopoid copepods dominated the communities. Mean biomass of the zooplankton community declined with increase in fish stock to between 5.1 and 18.1 g m−2 then increased.
3. On the basis of results from the experimental ponds and elsewhere, a new hypothesis is put forward to account for the switch from aquatic plant to phytoplankton dominance in eutrophicated shallow lakes. It envisages dominance by either group to be possible as alternative states over a wide range of high nutrient loadings. It suggests that each state is buffered against increased loading by mechanisms involving plant and algal physiology and zooplankton grazer populations. The nature of the buffers and the reasons by which one state may be switched to the other are, discussed.  相似文献

The effects of different levels of nutrient input on the plankton community was investigated in a two-year controlled fertilization study of eight experimental ponds. There were four treatments, each replicated: a control, to which no fertilizer was added, and three levels of nutrient addition. Limnological parameters including phytoplankton and zooplankton densities were measured frequently during both summers and less frequently during the rest of the year. Inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in the treated ponds increased. Phytoplankton and zooplankton density increased with treatment level but was variable. There was a limited relationship between the average chlorophyll a concentration per summer and the average cladoceran dry weight per summer. Above chlorophyll a concentrations greater than 60–70 mg/m3 other factors such as a pH zooplankton mortality effect, prevailed.  相似文献

1. Subarctic ponds are seasonal aquatic habitats subject to short summers but often have surprisingly numerous planktonic consumers relative to phytoplankton productivity. Because subarctic ponds have low pelagic productivity but a high biomass of benthic algae, we hypothesised that benthic mats provide a complementary and important food source for the zooplankton. To test this, we used a combination of fatty acid and stable isotope analyses to evaluate the nutritional content of benthic and pelagic food and their contributions to the diets of crustacean zooplankton in 10 Finnish subarctic ponds. 2. Benthic mats and seston differed significantly in total lipids, with seston (62.5 μg mg?1) having approximately eight times higher total lipid concentrations than benthic mats (7.0 μg mg?1). Moreover, the two potential food sources differed in their lipid quality, with benthic organic matter completely lacking some nutritionally important polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), most notably docosahexaenoic acid and arachidonic acid. 3. Zooplankton had higher PUFA concentrations (27–67 μg mg?1) than either of the food sources (mean benthic mats: 1.2 μg mg?1; mean seston: 9.9 μg mg?1), indicating that zooplankton metabolically regulate their accumulation of PUFA. In addition, when each pond was evaluated independently, the zooplankton was consistently more 13C‐depleted (δ13C ?20 to ?33‰) than seston (?23 to ?29‰) or benthic (?15 to ?27‰) food sources. In three ponds, a subset of the zooplankton (Eudiaptomus graciloides, Bosmina sp., Daphnia sp. and Branchinecta paludosa) showed evidence of feeding on both benthic and planktonic resources, whereas in most (seven out of 10) ponds the zooplankton appeared to feed primarily on plankton. 4. Our results indicate that pelagic primary production was consistently the principal food resource of most metazoans. While benthic mats were highly productive, they did not appear to be a major food source for zooplankton. Synopsis We examined the feeding behaviors and selectives of two common planktivorous fishes, pumpkinseeds Lepomis gibbosa and fathead minnows Pimephales promelas in the laboratory. Ingestion rates for both pumpkinseeds and fathead minnows feeding on zooplankton increased as a function of fish length. Pumpkinseeds fed on zooplankton strictly as particulate feeders, with preferences increasing as a function of zooplankton body size regardless of taxonomic identity. Preferences were highest for large Daphnia, intermediate for intermediate-sized copepods, and lowest for small Ceriodaphnia. Fathead minnows displayed the ability to use both particulate-feeding and filter-feeding behaviors. Differential preferences tended to reflect both zooplankton size and taxon, being highest for large, slow-swimming Daphnia, intermediate for small Ceriodaphnia, and lowest for faster-swimming copepods. These differences in prey capture behaviors and preferences of the two fishes are reflected in the zooplankton taxonomic composition of small ponds containing each fish type. The crustacean zooplankton assemblages in ponds containing both pumpkinseeds and fathead minnows were dominated by copepods. Cladocerans were rare. In ponds containing pumpkinseeds, but no fathead minnows, cladocerans were abundant, generally accounting for up to 80% of total crustacean zooplankton biomass. These results suggest that the type of planktivore, and not simply the presence or abundance of planktivores in a system, can determine zooplankton community structure.  相似文献

Juvenile Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) are omnivorous, and the question asked in this study is how they affect on their environment? Do they mainly act as predators on the cladoceran zooplankton or do they compete with the cladocerans for phytoplankton? This problem was studied in three ponds with and three ponds without small tilapia (3–5 cm). The fish growth rate, the succession of plankton species and the changes in abiotic conditions, were monitored over a period of 67 days. The fish biomass was kept low and the mean was approximately constant (12.6 g m?2) during the experiment. Phosphate was added to avoid phytoplankton nutrient limitation. Although the diet of Nile tilapia contained both phytoplankton and zooplankton, the fish affected the ecosystem in a similar way as zooplanktivorous fish. The fish ponds got more phytoplankton due to increase of Chlorophyta. Effects on the other phytoplankton groups Euglenophyta, Bacillariophyta, Cryptophyta and Cyanophyta could not be registered. The ponds without fish had higher densities of Daphnia lumholtzi and D. barbata. The other Cladocerans seemed less influenced by fish presence. The relative fish growth rate was most positively correlated with the density of Daphnia lumholtzi, Diaphanosmoa excisum and Bosmina longirostris. Tilapia seemes to have two feeding modes: (1) preying on large zooplankton and (2) unselective filtration of small planktonic organisms such as phytoplankton. The Torres del Paine National Park is located in the southern Chilean Patagonia. This park has numerous and heterogeneous lakes and ponds with different trophic status and zooplankton composition. The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of trophic status and conductivity on zooplankton assemblages in lakes and ponds within the Torres del Paine National Park. The water bodies described in the present study were previously classified in three groups. The first group consisted of large, deep and oligotrophic lakes with fish populations, low zooplankton species diversity and high predominance of calanoid copepods of small body size. The second group contained small mesotrophic lakes with fish populations and relatively high predominance of small sized daphnids. The third group consisted of fishless ponds of different trophic status, wide conductivity gradient and with zooplankton species of relatively large body size. The results show that Daphnids abundance was directly related to chlorophyll-a concentration and inversely associated with conductivity. Calanoids abundance was also directly associated with conductivity.  相似文献

The influence of different macrophyte taxa or growth forms on biological and environmental variables is often analysed in one-lake studies. However, the unique combination of non-vegetational characteristics of a waterbody, i.e. its site identity, can be an influential factor in itself, shaping the measured parameters irrespective of the presence or absence of certain macrophyte species. In this situation, the relative strengths of all factors can be determined best in a study that explicitly accounts for differences in the identity of the waterbodies. Several functional macrophyte groups are known to provide a potent microinvertebrate refuge or permanent habitat. The objective of this study was to detect patterns in the zooplankton assemblages associated with different extensive habitats of macrophyte species and to relate these patterns to three major factors: the microhabitat, the pond identity and the seasonality in the warmer months of the year. Five ponds located in the Woluwe catchment of the Brussels-Capital Region (Belgium) were studied monthly for macrophyte and zooplankton characteristics from July until October 2005. The vegetation in the clear ponds was characterized by extensive monospecific stands (Ceratophyllum, Chara, Nitella, Potamogeton, Nuphar and filamentous algae). Zooplankton could be analysed in seven different vegetation types and in the open water zones and contained a total of 17 cladoceran and 27 rotifer genera. Principal components analysis (PCA) ordination of zooplankton communities showed a seasonal gradient and a tendency to group within-pond habitats, although they differed in macrophyte species and habitat structure. Despite the absence of clustering of similar microhabitats across ponds, percent volume infested (PVI), vegetation biomass density and Daphnia length (used as a proxy for fish predation pressure) contributed significantly positive to the Shannon zooplankton biodiversity indices. Moreover, densities of most zooplankton subgroups and of total zooplankton were significantly and positively related to PVI. It is assumed that in eutrophic ponds, extensive, often monospecific macrophyte vegetations provide an ecological environment suitable for both macrophyte-associated species and migrating pelagic zooplankton, thereby maintaining a high microinvertebrate biodiversity.  相似文献

We studied the zooplankton community structure in a set of 33 interconnected shallow ponds that are restricted to a relatively small area (`De Maten', Genk, Belgium, 200 ha). As the ponds share the same water source, geology and history, and as the ponds are interconnected (reducing chance effects of dispersal with colonisation), differences in zooplankton community structure can be attributed to local biotic and abiotic interactions. We studied zooplankton community, biotic (phytoplankton, macrophyte cover, fish densities, macroinvertebrate densities), abiotic (turbidity, nutrient concentrations, pH, conductivity, iron concentration) and morphometric (depth, area, perimeter) characteristics of the different ponds. Our results indicate that the ponds differ substantially in their zooplankton community structure, and that these differences are strongly related to differences in trophic structure and biotic interactions, in concordance with the theory of alternative equilibria. Ponds in the clear-water state are characterised by large Daphnia species and species associated with the littoral zone, low chlorophyll-a concentrations, low fish densities and high macroinvertebrate densities. Ponds in the turbid-water state are characterised by high abundances of rotifers, cyclopoid copepods and the opposite environmental conditions. Some ponds show an intermediate pattern, with a dominance of small Daphnia species. Our results show that interconnected ponds may differ strongly in zooplankton community composition, and that these differences are related to differences in predation intensity (top-down) and habitat diversity (macrophyte cover).  相似文献
