In a turnip crop natural infection with turnip mild yellows virus was greatest in two narrow zones, one to leeward of an artificial windbreak, the other in a long shallow depression in the earth. Both zones were approximately across wind when Myzus persicae flew in early summer. Later in the summer, similar windbreaks facing different prevailing winds increased the number of larvae of Scaptomyza apicalis on the plants immediately to leeward and windward of the windbreaks, probably because shelter affected adults that were flying and laying eggs in the crop.  相似文献

The number of flying insects in the sheltered zone to leeward of artificial windbreaks of 0, 25, 45 and 70% permeability was greater than in unsheltered areas. Insects accumulated in the air nearer to dense windbreaks than to more permeable ones, and the position of maximum aerial density of insects coincided with that of maximum shelter. The more dense the windbreak the greater the numbers in the air to leeward. Absolute wind speed slightly affected the position of maximum aerial density behind a 45% permeable fence.  相似文献

Flying Cecidomyiidae, Mycetophilidae and Aphididae accumulated to leeward of a windbreak of 45 % open area. There were relatively more of these insects in sheltered than in unsheltered air the greater the angle of the incident wind to the windbreak, and the greater the free wind speed. Mycetophilidae and Aphididae accumulated relatively less as turbulence in the free air increased. The accumulation of Mymaridae to leeward of a solid windbreak was affected only by wind speed. No relationship was detected between the accumulation of Psychodidae, parasitic Hymenoptera, Thysanoptera and Staphylinidae and the incident angle of wind, wind speed or turbulence.  相似文献

Lath fences 3 ft and 8 ft high affected the horizontal distribution of flying insects similarly: most insects accumulated at a distance equal to 2–3 times the height of each fence to leeward, where catches, measured at 14 and 38 in. (≡ to 0·4 times the height of the fence above the ground) were 30–40 % greater than in exposed positions. Behind an 8 ft fence accumulations extended vertically to 12–16 ft (≡ to 1·5-2·0 times the height of the fence). Vertical profiles of weak-flying insects, in winds > 3 m.p.h. differed in sheltered and exposed positions; in shelter the boundary layer was deeper and insects were more abundant nearer the ground than elsewhere. For strong flyers, and insects which flew only in winds < 2 m.p.h., vertical profiles in sheltered and exposed positions were indistinguishable.  相似文献

Orthoptera were monitored on field edge public footpaths on the east (leeward) and west (windward) side of hedgerows in Chelmsford, UK, in 2006. A total of 6 species were recorded from footpaths on the leeward side of hedgerows probably due to the shelter from the prevailing westerly winds provided by the trees and shrubs. On the windward side of hedgerows species richness and abundance of Orthoptera were reduced (only 4 species were recorded). It is suggested that shelter from the wind and the exposure to early morning sunlight for Orthoptera on the east side of hedgerows are important factors governing their occurrence on farmland. Many replicates had Environmental Stewardship (ES) scheme field margins adjacent but they did not affect Orthoptera species richness or abundance.  相似文献

通过野外观测,研究了毛乌素沙地南缘平沙地人工栽种单行沙柳灌丛的植株形态与气流结构.结果表明,沙柳灌能降低迎风侧和背风侧的近地面风速,使沙粒在植株下部沉积.积沙体积(V2)与植株体积(V1)相关性较高(R=0.696).单行沙柳灌丛在4 m高处风速为6 m·s-1时的气流结构特征为:迎风侧3H处风速已降低,2 H处风速又得到加强,之后在背风侧迅速降低,1 H处达到最低值,然后逐渐恢复到旷野风速.防护距离约为17H',有效防护距离约为13 H'.沙柳灌丛对植株高度以上高度处风速影响较小.  相似文献

Daytime vertical distribution behaviour of settlement-stage reef-fish larvae in the upper 18?m was documented by diver observations of 497 pelagic larvae of 7 species 100–1000?m offshore of Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef. Four species were studied on 2 sides of the island. Depth amplitude and depth frequency differed among species, locations and times. Four pomacentrids had modal depths in the upper 30–50% of the water column. A lutjanid and 2 chaetodontids had modal depths 0–2?m deeper than the deepest-swimming pomacentrid. On the leeward side, 6 of 7 species swam deeper and/or more variably offshore. On the windward side, 1 of 4 species swam deeper or more variably offshore. No larvae swam deeper than 18?m on the leeward side, but 31% of larvae of 3 species did so on the windward side. Three of 4 species swam deeper and/or more variably on the windward than leeward side. Vertical distributions in relatively shallow water are apparently strongly influenced by water-column depth and bottom type.  相似文献

A thermostatic, taxidermic model sheep was used to assess the effects of thermoregulatory behaviour of shorn sheep at night in a winter environment with mean air temperatures slightly above freezing, variable wind speeds, rain and cloud cover.Testing in a wind tunnel showed that angle of incidence to the wind had no effect on heat loss at wind speeds < 2 m s−1 (7 km h−1), but at wind speeds of 7 m s−1 (25 km h−1), heat loss was 14% greater when the model was side-on rather than tail- or head-on to the wind.In tests on pasture, standing side-on to the early morning sun reduced heat loss from the model by 33%. Three hours “lying” on the lee side of a 1-m high synthetic Sarlon windbreak on a frosty night resulted in a reduction in heat loss of 6% below that when standing or 11% below that in a standing position in the open. When the model was placed in the centre of a tight group of 16 shorn sheep, its heat loss was reduced by an average of 14%.Heat loss was also reduced if the model was moved from the open, to regions of lower wind speed adjacent to windbreaks; the effect was greater on the leeward than the windward side.The reduction one metre leeward of a grass hedge (hybrid Phalaris) was 15% compared with 12% one metre leeward of a synthetic (Sarlon) windbreak, which is consistent with the preference of shorn sheep to shelter by Phalaris rather than Sarlon windbreaks.The microclimates where heat loss from the model were lowest correspond to those sought by shorn sheep in cold weather, and the results indicate that shorn sheep have very sensitive thermosensing mechanisms and efficient thermoregulatory behaviour.  相似文献

In a natural population of the perennial semi-shrub Artemisia halodendron in a shifting sandy habitat in the Horqin Desert of eastern Inner Mongolia, six isolated adult A. halodendron individuals of similar canopy size were chosen as target plants. The density of seeds in the top 5 cm soil depth around shrubs was measured using transects aligned to the four main wind directions and at different distances from the shrub base on both the windward and leeward sides. The effects of shrub presence on seed distribution of four co-occurring grasses were examined by linking seed distribution to seed traits. Of the four species, Setaris viridis and Eragrostis pilosa had small but similar seed mass, while Chloris virgata and Aristida adscensionis had large but similar seed mass. The species were grouped into two cohorts: small-seeded vs. large-seeded cohorts, and shrub presence effects on seed distribution of both cohorts were examined. We found marked difference in the seed distribution pattern among species, especially between the small-seeded and large-seeded cohorts. The small-seeded cohort had significantly higher seed accumulation on the windward than the leeward sides in the most and least prevailing wind directions and much higher seed accumulation on the leeward than the windward sides in the second and third most prevailing wind directions, while opposite patterns occurred in the large-seeded cohort. Four species also showed marked variation in the seed distribution pattern among transects and between windward and leeward sides of each transect. This study provided further evidence that shrubs embedded in a matrix of herbaceous plants is a key cause of spatial heterogeneity in seed availability of herbaceous species. However, seed distribution responses to the presence of shrubs will vary with species as well as with wind direction, sampling position (windward vs. leeward sides of the shrub) and distance from the shrub.  相似文献

The phenology of pollen release and pollen capture by Pistacia vera was studied in the field and laboratory respectively. Inflorescences of Pistacia vera were examined in a wind tunnel to determine whether the behavior of airborne conspecific pollen around receptive flowers differed as a result of changes in the shape and size of the inflorescence. In addition, the behavior of unclumped (single) and clumped pollen grains was studied to determine differences in the probability of their capture. Wind speeds within a commercial orchard during pollen shedding averaged 0.9–2.2 m/sec and atmospheric pollen concentrations were highest between 0900–1100 hr MST. Each of three stages in inflorescence development (defined on the basis of the number of exserted stigmas) was examined under identical ambient airflow conditions with equal concentrations of airborne pollen (1,000 grains/m3). The general pattern of pollen grain motion involves direct inertial collision by windward surfaces and by sedimentation of pollen onto leeward surfaces; clumped pollen rarely sedimented onto leeward surfaces. Small changes in ambient wind speed (0.5 m/sec to 1.0 m/sec) produced significant changes in the pattern of pollen motion around inflorescences and altered the number of pollen grains captured by leeward surfaces. Thus, wind pollination in P. vera is affected both by windspeed and by the shape or size of flower clusters. Differences in the behavior of clumped and unclumped pollen result from their inertial properties and responsiveness to local changes in the direction and speed of airflow. Unclumped pollen has a higher probability of being captured by leeward surfaces. The apparent insensitivity of pollen motion to differences in inflorescence size may ensure equitable pollination during the acropetal development of flowers.  相似文献

Root architecture and wind-firmness of mature Pinus pinaster   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
This study aims to link three-dimensional coarse root architecture to tree stability in mature timber trees with an average of 1-m rooting depth. Undamaged and uprooted trees were sampled in a stand damaged by a storm. Root architecture was measured by three-dimensional (3-D) digitizing. The distribution of root volume by root type and in wind-oriented sectors was analysed. Mature Pinus pinaster root systems were organized in a rigid 'cage' composed of a taproot, the zone of rapid taper of horizontal surface roots and numerous sinkers and deep roots, imprisoning a large mass of soil and guyed by long horizontal surface roots. Key compartments for stability exhibited strong selective leeward or windward reinforcement. Uprooted trees showed a lower cage volume, a larger proportion of oblique and intermediate depth horizontal roots and less wind-oriented root reinforcement. Pinus pinaster stability on moderately deep soils is optimized through a typical rooting pattern and a considerable structural adaptation to the prevailing wind and soil profile.  相似文献

Airborne algae from sites on the windward (n = 3) and leeward (n = 3) sides of the Ko‘olau Mountain range of O‘ahu, Hawai‘i, were sampled for a 16 d period during January and February 2015 using passive collection devices and were characterized using Illumina MiSeq sequencing of the universal plastid amplicon marker. Amplicons were assigned to 3,023 operational taxonomic units (OTUs), which included 1,189 cyanobacteria, 1,009 heterotrophic bacteria, and 304 Eukaryota (of which 284 were algae and land plants). Analyses demonstrated substantially more OTUs at windward than leeward O‘ahu sites during the sampling period. Removal of nonalgal OTUs revealed a greater number of algal reads recovered from windward (839,853) than leeward sites (355,387), with the majority of these being cyanobacteria. The 1,234 total algal OTUs included cyanobacteria, diatoms, cryptophytes, brown algae, chlorophyte green algae, and charophyte green algae. A total of 208 algal OTUs were identified from leeward side samplers (including OTUs in common among samplers) and 1,995 algal OTUs were identified from windward samplers. Barcoding analyses of the most abundant algal OTUs indicated that very few were shared between the windward and leeward sides of the Ko‘olau Mountains, highlighting the localized scale at which these airborne algae communities differ. Back trajectories of air masses arriving on O‘ahu during the sampling period were calculated using the NOAA HY‐SPLIT model and suggested that the sampling period was composed of three large‐scale meteorological events, indicating a diversity of potential sources of airborne algae outside of the Hawaiian Islands.  相似文献

采用定位观测法,系统评价了杨树(Populus simonii)林的防风、抗蚀和滞尘等生态服务效能及其间接价值,同时定量探讨了风速减弱系数与实测林地叶面积指数的关系。结果表明,在研究区主害风(西北风)天气下,林地迎风区6H(H为平均树高)、3H、林地中央、林地背风区林缘、6和8H处2m高度的日平均风速与对照点(流动沙丘)相比均有不同程度减弱,风速减弱系数在18.3%~66.2%之间。林地背风区6H处0.25、0.5、1和2 m 4个高度的月平均风速减弱系数与林地叶面积指数呈显著非线性相关,其间存在良好的三次曲线关系(P<0.0001,R2=0.43~0.94,n=80)。在主害风天气下,林地各观测点的地表日风蚀量与对照点相比大幅度降低,平均降幅85.2%~99.9%。在观测期内,林地中央的日平均降尘量为13.2 kg·hm-2,而林地迎风区6H处的日平均降尘量为9.9 kg·hm-2,林地的日滞尘能力约为3.3kg·hm-2。    相似文献

Question: Do shrubs influence the spatial pattern of soil seed banks in herbaceous vegetation and are these effects influenced by wind direction, sampling position (windward vs leeward sides of the shrub) and distance from the shrub? Location: Horqin desert in eastern Inner Mongolia, China. Methods: A pioneer shrub, Artemisia halodendron, occurring in a mobile sandy habitat was used as a case study. Species composition and abundance of the seed bank and established herbaceous vegetation around six target shrubs were sampled along transects aligned to the four main wind directions and at 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4.5 and 6 m from the shrub base on both windward and leeward sides of a transect. Results: The presence of shrubs significantly modified the spatial pattern of seed deposition, but effects varied with wind direction, sampling position and distance from the shrub. More seeds were deposited on the leeward side than on the windward sides in all four transects, especially on transects with the most prevailing wind directions. Shrubs also caused a marked variation in seed deposition across sampling locations; this effect was more pronounced on the leeward side of transects with the most prevailing wind directions, suggesting the mean range of the shrub's influence is within ca. 2 m. Conclusions: The study shows clear evidence of shrubs as a source of spatial heterogeneity in seed availability in the herbaceous layer. Shrub presence effects were strongly influenced by complex interactions between wind direction, sampling position, and distance from the shrub.  相似文献

Abstract Understanding the factors that affect plant species distribution and coexistence in areas with high plant species diversity is a challenge for ecologists. According to some authors, species occupy specific niches, but for others, species coexistence and geographical distribution patterns are random. Floristic composition of the family Leguminosae was studied on moist and dry slopes of the Baturité mountains in semi‐arid northeastern Brazil and was compared with findings for other plant formations elsewhere in Brazil. Substantial floristic differences were found between the moist windward and dry leeward slopes of the Baturité mountains despite their close geographical proximity. The leeward slope was slightly more diverse than the windward slope. Similarity analyses showed that the windward face is floristically allied to the Amazon forest, whereas the leeward slope is similar to other dry‐area formations of northeastern Brazil, such as thorny woodland (caatinga) and seasonal forests. The strong floristic differences that were observed between the windward and leeward slopes corroborate the theory of ecological niche conservatism, which holds that species occurrence is closely linked to environmental factors, such as temperature and precipitation.  相似文献

Different components of wind were measured to leeward of artificial windbreaks to show which most affected accumulations of airborne insects there. Horizontal motion was the most important. Accumulations of small airborne insects in sheltered places are probably caused when the insects are diffused or convected into the recirculating air behind barriers. The concentrations likely to occur theoretically in this way were compared with concentrations measured in the field.  相似文献

绿洲边缘积沙带的形成因素及其生态效应是一个新的科学问题。为了研究河西绿洲边缘积沙带的形成原因,运用方差分析、相关分析以及典型相关分析等方法,对河西绿洲边缘积沙带的21个样点的观测资料进行了分析。结果表明:河西绿洲边缘积沙带的分布趋势大致为东高西低、东宽西窄,大部分地段目前处于稳定阶段;积沙带上的优势种植物以天然柽柳最多,不同优势种植物的积沙带的迎风坡植被盖度及植被纯盖度差异较显著。典型相关分析结果表明:积沙带的高度和宽度是降水量、到沙源的距离、背风坡植被盖度和年平均风速等气候环境因子共同作用的结果。积沙带的生态效应:一是自身作为一种障碍物的防护作用,二是阻截、减少流沙流沙进入农田的作用。  相似文献

Trees have the ability to respond to local environmental cues by expressing particular phenotypes across their canopy through a mechanism known as intracanopy plasticity. In this study, intracanopy plasticity of Olea europaea subsp. europaea was analyzed by sampling leeward and windward canopy exposures of individuals occurring in an area with sustained strong wind conditions. A suite of morphofunctional and reproductive traits was measured at these contrasting canopy positions and, for comparison, also in wind-protected trees. Furthermore, the pattern of intracanopy plasticity of these plants was compared to that previously documented in a closely related species, Olea europaea subsp. guanchica. Plants exposed to strong winds displayed substantial differences between leeward and windward exposures in most of the study traits. Leeward exposures experienced a mean reduction of 73% in wind speed as compared to windward ones, and displayed a modular phenotype matching that observed in wind-protected plants. Wind-exposed plants, however, were comparatively smaller and had fewer and smaller inflorescences, since inflorescence size was positively associated with crown size. The two closely related species showed similar crown and leaf sizes between populations exposed to strong winds, and intracanopy responses were comparable for most traits. These observations suggest that intracanopy plasticity resulted in the expression of contrasting phenotypes within individuals, which allowed trees to persist under sustained wind stress, although at the cost of a reduced reproductive fitness. In addition, this study gives support to the idea that intracanopy responses are conserved among closely related taxa evolving in different habitats, but experiencing a comparable limiting factor.  相似文献

近地表地形的风场受坡度坡向、地表形态和空间格局等地形要素的控制,从而影响人的"风感"体验,是人居环境的选址与布局需要考虑的重要因素。通过建立地形3D模型、划分网格、设定模拟工况,运用Fluent 14.0软件对不同山体地形坡度、形态和格局的风场进行CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics)模拟。结果发现:(1)坡度在0.3以下对地形风场影响较小;当坡度大于0.5时,随坡度增大背风坡风影区逐渐增大,挡风效果更加明显;坡度大于0.7以后,随着风影区加大,回流涡旋更加明显。(2)风场受到周边地形形体的影响,尤其是迎风面和背风面截面变化率。迎风面截面变化率越大,风速变化越快;背风面截面变化越大,背风面的出现风影区和回流涡旋的几率越大。迎风面出现凹形迎风口会形成气体滞留区,而背风面凹形口后部会增加风影区和回流涡旋出现的几率。(3)不同地形格局对单个地形的风场具有强化和减弱效果。"三面环山"的相对封闭的地形格局有利于形成稳定的风场,并提高风感舒适度。在人居环境的风感营造和优化中,需要避开风感敏感区域,即风速激增区、回流涡旋区、无固定风向的强烈湍流区、气流不流通的静风区和气流死循环涡旋区等风感敏感区,并利用植被或者人工构筑物来消除敏感区或削弱这一影响。并根据不同的气候类型和城市特点进行选址、地形改造或者进行内部地形格局调整和优化,以提高风感舒适度。选择开放型地形格局和低坡度、平行风向的流线型地形能够加强通风,而塑造封闭性地形格局和垂直风向的陡坡地形能够减小风速。  相似文献
