Fine needle aspirates (FNA) from 31 invasive carcinomas of tubular type and 22 radial scar/complex sclerosing lesions (RS/CSL), diagnosed in Edinburgh between 1986 and 1991, were reviewed. the lesions in this study varied in size and palpability at presentation, but are of increasing interest in the differential diagnosis of non-palpable areas of increased mammographic density. In agreement with previously published information1'5'8, it was found that the tubular cancers were usually selected for biopsy following aspiration, but less often definitively diagnosed as malignant. Nearly 50% of the RS/CSL group were correctly reported benign on cytology, but in 40%, biopsy was recommended to exclude malignancy. In addition, cytological features helpful in suggesting malignancy in aspirates from tubular cancers, also raised suspicion in aspirates from the RS/CSL group, with a risk of overdiagnosis of cancer.  相似文献

Hepatocellular carcinomas exhibit a unique canalicular immunocytochemical staining pattern with polyclonal antibodies directed against carcinoembryonic antigen (pCEA). The use of this method to facilitate a definitive diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma on fine needle aspirates of the liver was evaluated using aspirates and the corresponding core biopsy samples from nine cases. Immunoperoxidase staining with pCEA produced an identical canalicular staining pattern in 6 (66%) of 9 aspirates and 6 (75%) of 8 biopsy samples. The negative results in three aspirates may be due to their lack of the tissue fragments necessary to show this staining pattern. These findings indicate that the expression of this unique immunocytochemical staining pattern may aid in the diagnosis of primary hepatocellular carcinoma by fine needle aspiration cytology.  相似文献

The use of cytocentrifugation in the preparation of fine needle aspiration (FNA) specimens from the breast was evaluated. A total of 174 fine needle aspirates of breast masses were flushed into cytospin Collection Fluid, from which Papanicolaou-stained Cytospin preparations were made in the laboratory. Comparison of these preparations to conventional smears of aspirates showed no significant differences in the number or morphology of the cells. In 148 cases, the FNA cytologic study was followed up by excisional biopsy, Tru-Cut biopsy and/or a combination of mammography and clinical follow-up of two to nine months. Of 36 verified carcinomas, 31 (86%) were correctly diagnosed, with a zero false-positive rate. Among the 74 cytologically benign aspirates, 2 carcinomas were found on open biopsy, giving a false-negative rate of 3%. Lipomas were not diagnosable with this technique. This technique should be considered in institutions with a high turnover of junior staff members, which frequently results in a higher number of poorly smeared specimens or in poorly fixed/air-dried specimens that give suboptimal results with the Papanicolaou stain. With this method, there is less risk of creation of potentially hazardous aerosols and further preparations for additional studies may be made if required.  相似文献

The role of fine needle aspiration cytology in the diagnosis of lymphoma   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The accuracy of fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology for the diagnosis of lymphoma and other hematolymphoid malignancies was investigated by a review of 158 FNA specimens from 143 patients. Patients included in the study had either a diagnosis of a hematolymphoid malignancy by FNA cytology or a biopsy diagnosis of lymphoma that was preceded by FNA cytology. Biopsy specimens were obtained from 85% of the patients. Of the 158 needle aspirates, 118 (75%) were diagnosed as lymphoma, 13 (8%) as suspicious of lymphoma, 8 (5%) as myelomas, 3 (2%) as leukemias, 12 (8%) as positive for malignancy and 4 (2%) as negative for malignancy. Two of the 118 needle aspirates diagnosed as lymphoma were false positives while 3 of 13 diagnosed as suspicious for lymphoma were found to be benign. Overall, there were four false negatives. Morphologic subclassification of the lymphomas, originally attempted for 60 needle aspirates, was identical to the histologic subclassification in 51 cases (85%). FNA cytology provided the initial diagnosis of a hematolymphoid malignancy in 51% of the cases and allowed the documentation of recurrent disease in 49%. The results demonstrate the usefulness of FNA cytology for the diagnosis and management of patients with lymphoma.  相似文献

A solution containing citric acid buffered saline (CABS) and 99% ethanol (E) 1:1 was used for preserving cells for flow cytometric DNA analysis. DNA histograms obtained from fine needle biopsy aspirates and preserved in CABS+E had a similar mean coefficient of variation (CV) as was obtained from aspirates taken in CABS (3.3 vs. 3.4%) and a clearly smaller mean CV than was obtained from aspirates preserved in 50% ethanol (mean 4.8%, P less than .0001). Aspirates taken in CABS more often contained a small (less than 3,000) number of cells as compared with aspirates preserved either in CABS+E or ethanol (P less than .0001). Since preservation of cells in CABS+E allows long-term storage of samples and results in a decreased number of insufficient samples as compared with buffered saline and in an enhanced resolution as compared with 50% ethanol, CABS+E is recommended for preservation of cytological samples to be analyzed for DNA content with flow cytometry.  相似文献

Background

Lymphadenopathy is a common clinical presentation of disease in South Africa (SA), particularly in the era of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and tuberculosis (TB) co-infection.

Methods

Data from 560 lymph node biopsy reports of specimens from patients older than 12 years at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital (CHBAH) between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2012 was extracted from the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS), division of Anatomical Pathology. Cytology reports of lymph node fine needle aspirates (FNAs) performed prior to lymph node biopsy in 203 patients were also extracted from the NHLS. Consent was not obtained from participants for their records to be used as patient information was anonymized and de-identified prior to analysis.

Results

The majority of patients were female (55%) and of the African/black racial group (90%). The median age of patients was 40 years (range12–94). The most common indication for biopsy was an uncertain diagnosis (more than two differential diagnoses entertained), followed by a suspicion for lymphoma, carcinoma and TB. Overall, malignancy constituted the largest biopsy pathology group (39%), with 36% of this group being carcinoma and 27% non-Hodgkin lymphoma. 22% of the total sampled nodes displayed necrotizing granulomatous inflammation (including histopathology and cytology demonstrating definite, and suspicious for mycobacterial infection), 8% comprised HIV reactive nodes; in the remainder no specific pathology was identified (nonspecific reactive lymphoid hyperplasia). Kaposi sarcoma (KS) accounted for 2.5% of lymph node pathology in this sample. Concomitant lymph node pathology was diagnosed in four cases of nodal KS (29% of the subset). The co-existing pathologies were TB and Castleman disease. HIV positive patients constituted 49% of this study sample and the majority (64%) of this subset had CD4 counts less than 350 cells/ul. 27% were HIV negative and in the remaining nodes, the HIV status of patients was unknown. The most common lymph node pathologies in HIV positive patients were Mycobacterial infection (31%), HIV reactive nodes (15%), non-Hodgkin lymphoma (15%) and nonspecific reactive lymphoid hyperplasia (15%). Only 8.7% were of Hodgkin lymphoma. In contrast, the most common lymph node pathologies in HIV negative patients were nonspecific reactive lymphoid hyperplasia (45%), carcinoma (25%) and Mycobacterial infection (11%). In this group, non-Hodgkin lymphoma and Hodgkin lymphoma constituted 9% and 8%, respectively. There were more cases of high-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma in the HIV positive group compared to the HIV negative group. FNA and lymph node biopsy had statistically significant good agreement with regard to Hodgkin lymphoma (K 0.774, SE 0.07, 95% CI 0.606-0.882, p=0.001), non-Hodgkin lymphoma (K 0.640, SE 0.07, 95% CI 0.472-0.807, p=0.001), carcinoma (K 0.723, SE 0.069, 95% CI 0.528-0.918, p=0.001), and mycobacterial infection (K 0.726, SE 0.07, 95% CI 0.618-0.833, p=0.001).

Conclusions

The most common lymph node pathologies in CHBAH are malignancies, nonspecific reactive lymphoid hyperplasia, necrotizing granulomatous inflammation and HIV reactive nodes. The distribution of disease differs in HIV positive patients. Overall, adequate FNA samples of lymph nodes have been found to have good correlation with lymph node biopsy findings in our setting.  相似文献

A monoclonal antibody to the androgen receptor was applied to fine needle aspirates from patients with benign and malignant prostatic disease. The series includes six patients with benign hyperplasia and 24 patients with prostatic carcinomas. The androgen receptor was detected in most nuclei of both benign and malignant epithelial cells. The intensity of immunostaining varied. No obvious relation was observed between the intensity of the staining in benign versus malignant cells. In addition no clear differences were found in the proportion of androgen receptor positive cells in benign aspirates as compared with aspirates from well differentiated or moderately well differentiated prostatic carcinomas. The relative number of androgen receptor positive cells was highest in smears from poorly differentiated prostatic carcinomas.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Liquid-based cytology, because of its capacity to reduce the obscuring factors and to provide thin-layer specimens, represents an opportunity to reevaluate endometrial cytology. In order to assess the utility of the liquid-based method in endometrial diagnosis, we evaluated its accuracy in comparison with histology. METHODS: Nine hundred and seventeen women scheduled for hysteroscopy were enrolled in the study. After providing informed consent, all the women proceeded sequentially to hysteroscopy, endometrial cytology and then biopsy endometrial sampling. RESULTS: Cyto-histological correlations were possible in 519 cases (57%): in 361 (39%) cases the biopsy was inadequate, in 15 (2%) the cytology was inadequate, and in 22 (2%) both were inadequate. At biopsy 25 (3%) women had adenocarcinoma, 5 (1%) had adenomatous atypical hyperplasia and 21 (2%) had simple non atypical hyperplasia. At cytology two adenocarcinomas and one adenomatous atypical hyperplasia were underrated as atypical hyperplasias and as non-atypical hyperplasia; two simple non-atypical hyperplasias were reported as negative; and eight cases were false positive (non-atypical hyperplasia at cytology, negative at biopsy). In our population, the cytology provided sufficient material more often than biopsy (P < 0.04). Sensitivity was estimated at 96%, specificity at 98%, positive predictive value at 86% and negative predictive value at 99%. CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that endometrial cytology may be an efficient diagnostic method. It could be applied to selected patients solely or in association with ultrasonography. The combination of these two noninvasive procedures may improve their diagnostic accuracy and reduce unnecessary hysteroscopies, thereby producing benefits for women and society.  相似文献

Fine needle aspiration cytology in HIV‐related lymphadenopathy: experience at a single centre in north India Objective: Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is emerging as a rapid and minimally invasive tool in evaluating lymphadenopathy associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). We evaluated the role of FNA in differentiating various causes of lymphadenopathy in patients with HIV and correlated the cytological diagnosis with CD4 counts. Methods: Seventy‐nine HIV‐positive patients (median age 35 years, 68 male) underwent ultrasound‐guided (n = 16) and unguided (n = 63) FNA from 1999 to 2006. Smears were stained with May–Grünwald–Giemsa, haematoxylin & eosin and Papanicolaou stains. Ziehl–Neelsen (ZN) staining for acid‐fast bacilli (AFB) was performed in all cases. Staining for fungus was performed whenever required. Results: The aspirates were adequate in 75 cases (95%). Non‐specific reactive hyperplasia was the most common FNA diagnosis (39, 52%) followed by granulomatous necrotizing lymphadenitis (15, 20%), necrotizing lymphadenitis (13, 17.3%) and granulomatous lymphadenitis (4, 5.2%). Fungal infection and non‐Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) were seen in two patients each. ZN staining was positive for AFB in 25 (33.3%) cases. One of these was morphologically interpreted as reactive hyperplasia, 12 as necrotizing lymphadenitis and 12 as granulomatous necrotizing lymphadenitis. Both patients with NHL had CD4 counts below 100/dl. Necrotizing lymphadenitis and granulomatous lymphadenitis were significantly associated with CD4 counts below and above 200/dl, respectively (P = 0.0002). Conclusions: FNA is an important tool for assessing the cause of lymphadenopathy in HIV patients. Necrotizing inflammation is more often seen in patients with low CD4 counts. AFB are commonly found in necrotic aspirates with or without granulomas. However, a stain for AFB should be performed in all aspirates from HIV‐related lymphadenopathy including reactive hyperplasia.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To quantify C cells in normal thyroid aspirates. STUDY DESIGN: Smears of 18 glands from patients with no thyroid disease, 8 women and 10 men aged on average 52.8 years, were analyzed. Five samples were aspirated from the upper, middle and lower thirds of each lateral lobe and from the isthmus. Smears were stained with anticalcitonin monoclonal antibody. RESULTS: C cells were detected in all specimens, ranging in number from 3 to 19 per gland, with 53.4% of the cells in the right lobe, 42.8% in the left lobe and 3.7% in the isthmus. The aspirates from the right lobe had 0-13 cells in the upper third, 0-9 in the middle third and 0-3 in the lower third. In the left lobe aspirates there were 0-7 cells in the upper third, 0-6 in the middle third and 0-2 in the lower third. One to two C cells were observed in the isthmus in only four cases. CONCLUSION: It is possible to determine the presence of C cells in normal thyroids and confirm studies conducted on histologic material; the cells were more frequently detected in the middle and upper third and mainly on the right side. They were rare in the isthmus. The search for C cells in thyroid aspirates is of great importance because it permits one to confirm rapidly, precisely and minimally invasively cases suspected of C cell hyperplasia, a preneoplastic condition that precedes the development of medullary carcinoma. In addition, the method shows numerical changes in these cells in such conditions as Hashimoto's thyroiditis and colloid goiter, in which the present results could serve as a control.  相似文献

The prognostic and therapeutic decisions in cases of metastatic melanoma depend upon the morphologic documentation of metastatic disease, which may rapidly and accurately be done by fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy of clinically suspicious lesions. The tumor cells derived from malignant melanomas demonstrate a wide range of appearances, however, and other neoplasms may be mimicked. Furthermore, additional neoplasms of other types are more frequent in melanoma patients: the possibility of a new primary tumor must be considered if the morphology of the tumor cells is uncharacteristic. Therefore, a study was undertaken to analyze the morphologic changes seen in FNA biopsy specimens from metastatic malignant melanoma and to determine which features could be the most useful in establishing a definitive diagnosis. A total of 174 consecutive cases, comprising 151 malignant aspirates and 23 inconclusive aspirates, were reviewed. The most significant features for identification of melanoma over other tumor types were the cell shape and nuclear position, the presence of numerous isolated neoplastic cells and occasional binucleated or multinucleated cells. Intracellular melanin in neoplastic cells was diagnostic when present, but it was absent in 60% of the cases. Macronucleoli and/or intranuclear cytoplasmic invaginations were characteristic but variable features. Morphology was also found to vary by site and cell type. Lung aspirates were less cellular and more likely to contain melanin. Aspirates of subcutaneous nodules were more often composed of spindle-shaped cells or of other variant cell types. Lymph node aspirates more often yielded epithelioid cells with macronucleoli and/or intranuclear invaginations. Spindle-cell melanomas usually demonstrated inconspicuous nuclei and rarely showed enlarged nucleoli. Epithelioid-cell tumors contained multinucleated cells and areas of cell wrapping more frequently than did spindle-cell tumors. The findings in this study emphasize that a full awareness of the spectrum of morphologic presentations of metastatic melanoma as well as of the clinical history are needed for greater precision in its diagnosis and for avoidance of the pitfall of misdiagnosing nonmelanomas with similar appearances.  相似文献

In order to evaluate fine needle aspirates of thyroid lesions with features intermediate between those of follicular neoplasms and colloid nodules, 38 aspirates in which a definitive diagnosis had not been made were reviewed. On review, ten aspirates were excluded from the "intermediate" category; seven were reclassified as unsatisfactory and one as a cellular colloid nodule. Two papillary carcinomas showed a complex pattern not identified in smears from other lesions; these aspirates were also classified separately for independent evaluation. The remaining 28 aspirates were characterized by syncytial-type tissue fragments with mild nuclear atypia. The association of syncytial-type tissue fragments and orderly sheets and fragments forming a honeycomb pattern in the same aspirate indicated a colloid nodule, though a two-disease process could not be excluded. Of the aspirates containing only syncytial-type tissue fragments, 50% were from adenomas, 25% were from carcinomas, and 25% were from colloid nodules. Criteria to distinguish between the various follicular lesions were not identified in these smears.  相似文献

In a prior study of 411 fine needle aspirates of the prostate (FNAPs), we identified a subset of 50 (12%) aspirates in which the findings were designated cytologically atypical. These equivocal cases formed a heterogeneous group composed of both histologically benign and malignant proliferations in which cutting needle biopsy was necessary to further delineate the nature of the abnormality. In an attempt to define quantitative and morphologic criteria for the separation of these proliferations into benign and malignant categories and to reduce the need for diagnostic cutting needle biopsies, we performed a cytomorphometric analysis of smears from 12 FNAPs (6 histologically proven benign and 6 histologically proven malignant) with equivocal cytologic atypia. We were unable to define any cytomorphometric criteria that accurately subdivided these cases into benign and malignant categories.  相似文献

A total of 220 fine needle aspiration (FNA) specimens from 212 patients with clinically suspected or previously histologically confirmed lymphoma were evaluated by cytology in conjunction with immunophenotyping analysis of the aspirate; the results were compared with the histologic diagnosis made on previous or current accessions of lymph node or extranodal tissue. Smears of the aspirates were stained with the Diff-Quik and Papanicolaou stains while immunoperoxidase staining using antibodies against kappa and lambda immunoglobulin light chains and Leu-4 was routinely performed on Cytospin preparations. Where indicated, additional marker studies (including T-200, Leu-1, Leu-2a, Leu-3a + 3b, Leu-M1, B1, Leu-12, IgM, CALLA and TdT) were performed. For the non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, specimens were classified by the cytologic characteristics of the neoplastic cells according to the International Working Formulation scheme. The combination of cytologic smears and immunoperoxidase studies resulted in a diagnosis of lymphoma in 173 cases (79%). The remaining aspirates were interpreted as suspicious for lymphoma (7%), benign (10%) or inadequate for diagnosis (4%). Of the 15 suspicious aspirates, 5 proved to be Hodgkin's disease and 2 to be T-cell lymphoma by subsequent biopsy. The cause of failure in the nine inadequate aspirates were necrosis (3 cases), sclerosis (2 cases) and faulty technique (4 cases). In the cases that had concurrent tissue biopsies, no false-positive diagnoses were rendered. These results indicate that FNA used in association with immunocytochemistry is a reliable tool for establishing the diagnosis and classification of the majority of cases of lymphoma. Optimal immunoglobulin light-chain ratios for defining monoclonality in FNA specimens of B-cell lymphomas are proposed.  相似文献

Four cases of pilomatrixoma studied by fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy prior to resection and histologic diagnosis were reviewed to identify the cytologic features useful in making the FNA cytodiagnosis. Cytopathology had initially correctly diagnosed two cases while misdiagnosing one as a carcinoma and one as a suspected carcinoma. The aspirates from all cases contained either clustered or isolated basaloid cells, with variably sized nuclei and prominent nucleoli. "Ghost cells" were also present in most smears stained with the Giemsa stain and could thus be very helpful for making the FNA diagnosis of pilomatrixoma. The occurrence of either foreign-body giant cells or calcium deposits in the aspirates could also contribute to suggesting the correct diagnosis of pilomatrixoma in some cases.  相似文献

Fine-needle aspiration biopsies and surgical biopsies were obtained from maldescended testes of 149 consecutive men. The aspirates were subjected to quantitative DNA flow cytometry and the surgical biopsy to histological evaluation. From more than 80% of the gonads, sufficient material was obtained for both examinations. A significant hyperdiploid cell population with a mean DNA index of 1.23 (range 1.17-1.31) was found in six gonads. Hyperdiploid aneuploidy was found in gonads without, as well as with, complete spermatogenesis. In none of the six cases did the surgical biopsy show evidence of early testicular neoplasia by morphology or by immunohistochemical methods with antibodies against carcinoma in situ. This indicates that aneuploidies in maldescended testes do not necessarily indicate malignancy. It may be speculated that hyperdiploid aneuploidy is related to the development of preneoplastic lesions.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To study the distribution, prevalence and cytomorphologic features of mediastinal lesions and assess the utility of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in such lesions by correlating with clinical, laboratory and imageologic parameters. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study was performed of mediastinal lesions that were referred for ultrasonographic/computed tomography-guided FNAC during the years 2001-2006. Correlation was done wherever possible using the following parameters: histology, bone marrow, imageology, tumor markers, cytology, immunohistochemistry, antecedent history and regression after therapy. RESULTS: A total of 161 patients underwent 182 aspirates. Diagnosis was possible in 130 (80.7%) patients, and, in 31 cases (19.3%), aspirates were unsatisfactory. In 71 (54.6%) correlation was done, and in 70 (98.5%) positive correlation was found. CONCLUSION: FNAC in correlation with clinical, imageologic and hematologic features proved to be an excellent diagnostic tool in diagnosing as well as classifying mediastinal lesions and can be used as a substitute to core biopsy.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To study the cytologic features of cells in breast aspirates of seromas in women who had undergone irradiation at lumpectomy sites. STUDY DESIGN: Cytologic material from 38 females with an age range of 39-72 years who had undergone aspiration of seromas were retrieved to determine tumor recurrence or other atypia. The material was obtained using the conventional method of needle aspiration with a 22-gauge needle and 10-mL syringe, maintaining negative pressure. The syringe and needle contents were washed in a cytology container containing 30% ethyl alcohol in physiologic saline. From half the washings filter preparations were made and stained by the Papanicolaou method, while from the other half cell blocks were made and sections cut after processing and stained with hematoxylineosin. RESULTS: In 2 of 38 patients, filter preparations and cell blocks showed malignant cells of breast carcinoma that were similar to the primary. This was confirmed on core biopsy and subsequent mastectomy. In 21 of 38 cases mildly atypical cells with degenerative effects, mild hyperchromasia, liberal cytoplasm, macrophages, inflammatory cells and a few apocrine cells were seen, while in 11 of 38 patients scanty debris, few inflammatory cells, rare apocrine cells and a few macrophages were found. In 4 of 38 cases highly atypical cells with hyperchromatic nuclei and nucleoli were noted. However, a core biopsy in all 4 patients revealed no evidence of residual tumor. CONCLUSION: Cell atypia in aspirates from seromas should be interpreted with caution to avoid unnecessary, invasive surgery, keeping in mind that radiation can cause misleading changes. However, patients with clinical indications of recurrent tumor or with severe atypia should undergo biopsy to permit appropriate management.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess the significance of finding myeloid metaplasia in splenic aspirates from patients presenting with mild to moderate firm splenomegaly, in the absence of characteristic peripheral blood findings, in diagnosing idiopathic myelofibrosis. STUDY DESIGN: Archival records pertaining to 14 patients diagnosed as having myeloid metaplasia on splenic aspirates performed between September 2000 and April 2004 were analyzed. RESULTS: The relevant findings in these 9 women and 5 men were: splenic enlargement 17-21 cm with homogeneous echotexture on ultrasonography, hemoglobin 4-10 g/dL, variable pattern of anemia, total leukocyte count 6,300-28,800/ mm3 with neutrophilia and a few late myeloid precursors on the differential count, normal platelet counts, dry bone marrow tap in 10 patients and cellular marrow aspirate with prominence of megakaryocytes dispersed in a maturing cell population of myeloid and erythroid series in 4 patients. Splenic aspirates yielded foci of trilineage hematopoiesis suggestive of myeloid metaplasia, possibly due to myelofibrosis of idiopathic type, as confirmed on trephine biopsy in all cases. CONCLUSION: Splenic aspirates may be a useful tool for detecting myeloid metaplasia suggesting myelofibrosis when peripheral blood findings are not yet characteristic of the same. The procedure was not associated with any complications.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to improve the pre-operative diagnosis of mammary mucinous lesions. All mucinous lesions detected by fine needle aspiration (FNA) and confirmed by histological examination were reviewed by cytological findings, mammographic appearances and sonographic findings. Twenty aspirates had corresponding pathology, including 12 mucinous carcinomas, two mucocele-like lesions (MLL) with atypical ductal hyperplasia, three MLL with ductal hyperplasia and three simple MLL. Simple MLL and mucocele-like with ductal hyperplasia showed scant cellularity, no or rare intact single tumour cells, monolayered arrangement and absence of nuclear atypia. In contrast, most mucinous carcinomas showed higher cellularity, more single tumour cells, three-dimensional clusters, and mild to marked nuclear atypia. However, MLL with atypical ductal hyperplasia showed cytological features overlapping with mucinous carcinoma. MLL had a non-specific mammographic appearance and showed a cystic lesion on sonography. Mucinous carcinoma appeared as a solid mass on sonography and as a distinct nodule on mammography. Based on the combination of FNA cytology and image findings, benign MLL can be correctly distinguished from mucinous carcinoma before surgery.  相似文献
