Individual behaviour of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua in the presence of hypoxic water was measured in situ in the vertically stratified Bornholm Basin of the Baltic Sea. Considering all recaptured individuals, the use of hypoxic habitat was comparable to data derived by traditional survey data, but some G. morhua had migrated towards the centre of the c. 100 m deep basin and spent about a third of their time at oxygen saturation <50%, possibly to forage on zoobenthos. Maximal residence time per visit in such hypoxic water was limited to a few hours, allowing for the digestion of consumed prey items in waters with sufficient dissolved oxygen.  相似文献

Prolonged swimming capacity (critical swimming speed, U crit, protocol) and metabolism were measured for 14 Atlantic cod Gadus morhua exposed to seven oxygen levels within the non-lethal range normally encountered in the Gulf of St Lawrence (35 to 100% saturation). Burst-and-coast swimming was triggered earlier (at lower speeds) in hypoxia, and burst-and-coast movements were more frequent in hypoxia than in normoxia at low speeds. Furthermore, the metabolic scope beyond the metabolic rate at which Atlantic cod resorted to burst-and-coast movements decreased gradually as ambient oxygen concentration dropped. Overall, fewer burst-and-coast movements were observed in hypoxia while the distance swum in burst-and-coast mode remained c . 1% of the total distance swam in all tests. Oxygen availability had no effect on the rate of increase in metabolic rate with increasing velocity <50 cm s−1, but limited swimming performances and metabolic rate at higher speeds. The prevailing low oxygen tensions on the bottom in the deep channels may impair the swimming capacity of Atlantic cod in the estuary and northern Gulf of St Lawrence.  相似文献

A reappraisal of activity metabolism in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Atlantic cod ( Gadus morhua ) were forced to swim in a swim tunnel respirometer until fatigued; oxygen consumption rate (O2) was measured during swimming at incremental speeds until the fish was exhausted and during recovery from exhaustion. Maximal oxygen consumption (O2max) occurred during maximal activity as has been found for other fish species, but at odds with the current paradigm for Atlantic cod. Earlier experiments had drawn the conclusion that O2max in Atlantic cod occurs during recovery from exhaustive exercise. We found no support for this paradigm in our experiments and we propose that the respiratory physiology of Atlantic cod is not unlike that of other fishes.  相似文献

The average rate of swimming speed and the physiological status or stress of individual Atlantic cod Gadus morhua was monitored in response to short-term acute (STA) hypoxia ( i.e. partial pressure of oxygen,     , reduced from 20·9 to 4·3 kPa within 1 h at 10° C). The STA hypoxic response of Atlantic cod was associated with a large primary increase (+29%) and a large secondary decrease (−54%) in swimming speed as well as major physiological stress ( e.g. plasma cortisol = 214·7 ng ml−1 and blood lactate = 2·41 mmol l−1).  相似文献

Key components of swimming metabolism: standard metabolism (Rs), active metabolism (Ra) and absolute aerobic scope for activity (RaRs) were determined for small age 0 year Atlantic cod Gadus morhua. Gadus morhua juveniles grew from 0·50 to 2·89 g wet body mass (MWB) over the experimental period of 100 days, and growth rates (G) ranged from 1·4 to 2·9% day?1, which decreased with increasing size. Metabolic rates were recorded by measuring changes in oxygen consumption over time at different activity levels using modified Brett‐type respirometers designed to accommodate the small size and short swimming endurance of small fishes. Power performance relationships were established between oxygen consumption and swimming speed measurements were repeated for individual fish as each fish grew. Mass‐specific standard metabolic rates () were calculated from the power performance relationships by extrapolating to zero swimming speed and decreased from 7·00 to 5·77 μmol O2 g?1 h?1, mass‐specific active metabolic rates () were calculated from extrapolation to maximum swimming speed (Umax) and decreased from 26·18 to 14·35 μmol O2 g?1 h?1 and mass‐specific absolute scope for activity was calculated as the difference between active and standard metabolism () and decreased from 26·18 to 14·35 μmol O2 g?1 h?1 as MWB increased. Small fish with low Rs had bigger aerobic scopes but, as expected, Rs was higher in smaller fish than larger fish. The measurements and results from this study are unique as Rs, Ra and absolute aerobic scopes have not been previously determined for small age 0 year G. morhua.  相似文献

The behavioural thermoregulation of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua L. was investigated in a shuttlebox at normoxia and at three levels of hypoxia: 30, 20 and 15% oxygen saturation.
The preferred temperatures at normoxia, 30, 20 and 15% oxygen saturation were 13·9, 13·1. 10·0 and 8·8° C, respectively.
A decrease in metabolism and an increased blood oxygen affinity are among the physiological advantages of selecting a lower temperature during hypoxia. Furthermore the chances of surviving low oxygen saturations are better at low temperatures.
In natural environments, this behaviour may result in habitat shifts of fish living in heterothermal environments with changing oxygen saturations, especially in coastal areas with eutrophication, as for example the Baltic Sea.  相似文献

Stages of embryonic development in the Atlantic cod Gadus morhua   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The early development of the Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua was studied from fertilization until first-feeding. Multiple families were reared at 7 degrees C and a developmental staging series was prepared using morphological landmarks visible with the light microscope. Stages were named rather than numbered to allow for future additions and broadly grouped into larger time intervals called periods. The most useful staging features were found to be initially cell number, and later in development, somite number. The mean cell cycle time for the first six cleavages was 135 min and the linear regression equation for development of somites(s) over time (t) was s = 0.29t - 18.14. The segmentation period began at 220 h postfertilization (hpf), and unlike some other teleosts, the addition of new somites continued throughout the majority of embryonic development, until just prior to hatching. Hatching occurred at 256 hpf, after which individuals remained motionless at the water's surface, undergoing negative phototaxis only after the first day posthatch. The first-feeding stage was reached at the end of the third day posthatch, subsequent to development of a functional jaw and hindgut. This staging series provides an essential baseline reference for future experiments involving developing cod embryos and for the aquaculture industry.  相似文献

This study tested the hypothesis that the effects of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua ovarian fluid on sperm motility variables are population specific. Sperm from a northern G. morhua population were activated in the presence of ovarian fluid from either northern or southern G. morhua at different concentrations. Ovarian fluid acted as a filter, in some cases reducing sperm swimming performance compared with seawater. Fluid from females foreign in population (southern) to the males (northern) had a greater inhibiting effect than those from the native population. Follow‐up analysis indicated that the ovarian fluids had lower Ca2+ concentration in northern than southern G. morhua, which could be the causative mechanism. If widespread, such cryptic female choice could reduce the incidence of intraspecific hybridization among diverged populations and contribute to reproductive isolation.  相似文献

The effect of food intake and temperature on otolith macrostructure and microstructure was examined experimentally in Atlantic cod Gadus morhua. Daily increment formation was validated and otolith accretion rate and optical density quantified using image analysis. Two‐week periods of starvation had no discernable effect on otolith increment width or optical density, despite having negative effects on somatic growth. In contrast, temperature had a strong positive effect on otolith accretion rate and clear effects on optical density with the otolith becoming more translucent at higher temperatures. Somatic growth, otolith accretion and otolith optical density each had a significantly different response curve to temperature. No relationship was detected between individual somatic growth rates and the accretion rate or optical properties of the otolith. The experimental manipulation of temperature‐induced otolith patterns similar to the ‘false ring’ secondary structures sometimes observed in the otoliths of wild fish. The results suggest that otolith pattern arises from a combination of temperature and seasonal effects, but not directly from individual variation in somatic growth.  相似文献

Short-term environmental manipulations during the early juvenile stage have a large impact on harvesting size of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua nearly 3 years later. A group of juvenile Atlantic cod (initial mass 9·5 g) were reared for 3 months under simulated natural photoperiod or continuous light, and a range of temperatures (7, 10, 13 and 16° C, and a group called T-step, i.e. with temperature reduced successively from 16 to 13 and 10° C). After termination of the laboratory trial, the fish were moved to sea pens and reared at ambient conditions for 30 months before harvesting in June 2006. Observed growth gain from the 3 month laboratory trial was still persistent following the 30 months of sea-pen ongrowing. The T-step group displayed 15, 13, 1 and 10% superior mass gain respectively than the groups initially at 7, 10, 13 and 16° C at harvest in June 2006. Similarly, rearing under continuous light during the initial 3 month period during the early juvenile stage resulted in 1–9% larger size at harvesting compared to fish reared at simulated natural photoperiod. Gonado-somatic and hepato-somatic indices were similar in all groups. Contribution to the understanding of the mechanism behind size variation in adult fish can have wide range applications for Atlantic cod fisheries and aquaculture.  相似文献

Thermal tolerance windows serve as a powerful tool for estimating the vulnerability of marine species and their life stages to increasing temperature means and extremes. However, it remains uncertain to which extent additional drivers, such as ocean acidification, modify organismal responses to temperature. This study investigated the effects of CO2‐driven ocean acidification on embryonic thermal sensitivity and performance in Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua, from the Kattegat. Fertilized eggs were exposed to factorial combinations of two PCO2 conditions (400 μatm vs. 1100 μatm) and five temperature treatments (0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 °C), which allow identifying both lower and upper thermal tolerance thresholds. We quantified hatching success, oxygen consumption (MO2) and mitochondrial functioning of embryos as well as larval morphometrics at hatch and the abundance of acid–base‐relevant ionocytes on the yolk sac epithelium of newly hatched larvae. Hatching success was high under ambient spawning conditions (3–6 °C), but decreased towards both cold and warm temperature extremes. Elevated PCO2 caused a significant decrease in hatching success, particularly at cold (3 and 0 °C) and warm (12 °C) temperatures. Warming imposed limitations to MO2 and mitochondrial capacities. Elevated PCO2 stimulated MO2 at cold and intermediate temperatures, but exacerbated warming‐induced constraints on MO2, indicating a synergistic interaction with temperature. Mitochondrial functioning was not affected by PCO2. Increased MO2 in response to elevated PCO2 was paralleled by reduced larval size at hatch. Finally, ionocyte abundance decreased with increasing temperature, but did not differ between PCO2 treatments. Our results demonstrate increased thermal sensitivity of cod embryos under future PCO2 conditions and suggest that acclimation to elevated PCO2 requires reallocation of limited resources at the expense of embryonic growth. We conclude that ocean acidification constrains the thermal performance window of embryos, which has important implication for the susceptibility of cod to projected climate change.  相似文献

The reduction potential of a cell is related to its fate. Proliferating cells are more reduced than those that are differentiating, whereas apoptotic cells are generally the most oxidized. Glutathione is considered the most important cellular redox buffer and the average reduction potential (Eh) of a cell or organism can be calculated from the concentrations of glutathione (GSH) and glutathione disulfide (GSSG). In this study, triplicate groups of cod larvae at various stages of development (3 to 63 days post-hatch; dph) were sampled for analyses of GSSG/2GSH concentrations, together with activities of antioxidant enzymes and expression of genes encoding proteins involved in redox metabolism. The concentration of total GSH (GSH+GSSG) increased from 610±100 to 1260±150 μmol/kg between 7 and 14 dph and was then constant until 49 dph, after which it decreased to 810±100 μmol/kg by 63 dph. The 14- to 49-dph period, when total GSH concentrations were stable, coincides with the proposed period of metamorphosis in cod larvae. The concentration of GSSG comprised approximately 1% of the total GSH concentration and was stable throughout the sampling series. This resulted in a decreasing Eh from −239±1 to −262±7 mV between 7 and 14 dph, after which it remained constant until 63 dph. The changes in GSH and Eh were accompanied by changes in the expression of several genes involved in redox balance and signaling, as well as changes in activities of antioxidant enzymes, with the most dynamic responses occurring in the early phase of cod larval development. It is hypothesized that metamorphosis in cod larvae starts with the onset of mosaic hyperplasia in the skeletal muscle at approximately 20 dph (6.8 mm standard length (SL)) and ends with differentiation of the stomach and disappearance of the larval finfold at 40 to 50 dph (10–15 mm SL). Thus, metamorphosis in cod larvae seems to coincide with high and stable total concentrations of GSH.  相似文献

Microsatellites were identified by screening 2294 GenBank entries available for Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.), mainly representing expressed sequence tags and cDNA sequences. Ninety‐two novel microsatellite loci (tetra‐, tri‐ and dinucleotides) were characterized on 96 individuals. This strategy yielded 25 gene‐associated polymorphic microsatellite markers (11 tri‐ and 14 dinucleotides) with two to 20 alleles and an average heterozygosity of 0.48 in the population studied (range 0.02–0.89). One marker exhibited significant homozygote excess, and one of the primer pairs amplified two linked markers. The gene identity was determined at nine of the loci, confirming the associated microsatellites as type I markers.  相似文献

The historical phylogeography, biogeography, and ecology of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) have been impacted by cyclic Pleistocene glaciations, where drops in sea temperatures led to sequestering of water in ice sheets, emergence of continental shelves, and changes to ocean currents. High‐resolution, whole‐genome mitogenomic phylogeography can help to elucidate this history. We identified eight major haplogroups among 153 fish from 14 populations by Bayesian, parsimony, and distance methods, including one that extends the species coalescent back to ca. 330 kya. Fish from the Barents and Baltic Seas tend to occur in basal haplogroups versus more recent distribution of fish in the Northwest Atlantic. There was significant differentiation in the majority of trans‐Atlantic comparisons (ΦST = .029–.180), but little or none in pairwise comparisons within the Northwest Atlantic of individual populations (ΦST = .000–.060) or defined management stocks (ΦST = .000–.023). Monte Carlo randomization tests of population phylogeography showed significantly nonrandom trans‐Atlantic phylogeography versus absence of such structure within various partitions of trans‐Laurentian, Northern cod (NAFO 2J3KL) and other management stocks, and Flemish Cap populations. A landlocked meromictic fjord on Baffin Island comprised multiple identical or near‐identical mitogenomes in two major polyphyletic clades, and was significantly differentiated from all other populations (ΦST = .153–.340). The phylogeography supports a hypothesis of an eastern origin of genetic diversity ca. 200–250 kya, rapid expansion of a western superhaplogroup comprising four haplogroups ca. 150 kya, and recent postglacial founder populations.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of prey exoskeleton characteristics on gastric evacuation patterns in Atlantic cod Gadus morhua. Three distinct stages were highlighted in the gastric evacuation of crustacean prey characterized by a robust exoskeleton. The experiments confirmed that the three shrimp species, Pandalus borealis, Pandalus montagui and Eualus macilentus, and the crab Chionoecetes opilio, were evacuated from the stomach at different rates. The duration of all stages increased with increasing ash (and carbonate) content of the fresh prey. Thickness, chemical composition and morphology of the prey exoskeleton all affected gastric evacuation: duration of initial delay, overall evacuation rate and a decreased evacuation rate at the end of the process. The power exponential function (PEF), with its shape parameter, described the course of evacuation for these prey types well, especially the initial delay. The PEF does not, however, allow describing evacuation by the current stomach content mass independent of meal size, which limits its usefulness in estimating consumption rates of wild G. morhua. To predict and describe gastric evacuation of prey with a robust exoskeleton, it is therefore suggested that the square‐root function be expanded with an initial lag phase, coupled to the mechanistically based cylinder model of gastric evacuation.  相似文献

Survival, oxygen consumption (     ), total plasma cortisol and glucose levels and gill heat-shock protein 70 (hsp70) expression were measured in 10 and 50 g juvenile Atlantic cod Gadus morhua during an acute temperature increase (2° C h−1) to their critical thermal maximum. Ninety three per cent of the fish in both size classes survived to 24° C; however, mortality was 100% within 15 min of reaching this temperature. The     for both size classes increased significantly with temperature, reaching peak values at 22° C that were c. 2·8-fold those of control (10° C) fish. Resting plasma cortisol and glucose levels were lower in 10 g as compared to 50 g fish. Plasma glucose levels were highly variable in both size classes, and significant increases were only seen at >22° C for the 10 g fish. In contrast, plasma cortisol showed an exponential increase with temperature starting at 16° C in both size classes, and reached maximum levels at 22° C that were 19-fold (10 g fish) and 35-fold (50 g fish) higher than their respective control groups. Both the constitutive (73 kDa) and inducible (72 kDa) isoforms of hsp70 were detected in both size classes using the widely utilized mouse monoclonal antibody. Expression of these isoforms, however, did not change when Atlantic cod were exposed to elevated temperature, and the 72 kDa isoform was not detected using salmonid-specific antibodies. These results indicate that juvenile Atlantic cod are very sensitive to acute increases in water temperature. In addition, they (1) show that     and plasma cortisol, but not plasma glucose or gill hsp 70 levels, are sensitive indicators of thermal stress in Atlantic cod and (2) support previous reports that the upper critical temperature for this species is 16° C.  相似文献

For years, fishermen have noted that cod (Gadus morhua) within the Georges Bank Atlantic fishery spawn multiple times annually with peaks in the spring and in the fall. To evaluate the hypothesis that these differences in reproductive behaviour reflect genetically different spawning populations, we identified eight polymorphic simple sequence repeats within expressed sequence tags (ESTs). Previously, only a few genetic markers have been informative for distinguishing between cod populations of the Northwest Atlantic. The development of additional markers from ESTs will be a valuable tool to improve our understanding of population structure in this commercially important species.  相似文献

Stereo‐video scuba transects were conducted during daylight hours from June to September 2013 within a proposed marine protected area (MPA) in the Firth of Clyde, west of Scotland. More juvenile Atlantic cod Gadus morhua of fork length (LF) range 6–11 cm were observed in substrata containing mixed gravel, including maerl, than in boulder‐cobble substrata with high algal cover, or sand with low density seagrass. Community composition was significantly different between substratum types. A decrease in G. morhua abundance was observed over the period of data collection. Over time, mean and variance in G. morhua LF increased, indicating multiple recruitment events. Protecting mixed gravel substrata could be a beneficial management measure to support the survival and recruitment of juvenile G. morhua; other substrata might be important at night given their diel migratory behaviour. Stereo‐video cameras provide a useful non‐destructive fisheries‐independent method to monitor species abundance and length measurements.  相似文献
