Parasite assemblages of Dules auriga are described for the first time from samples caught during research cruises in two localities of the Argentine–Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (AUCFZ) and are compared with four additional samples collected by commercial catches from the same region. A total of 178 fish were examined and 13 parasite species were found. This showed low species richness, a condition observed in some other small benthic species at a low trophic level. The composition of the parasite fauna was similar to those found on other host species in the region, sharing the same set of dominant species with other sympatric fishes, which have been identified as both typical and as indicators of this ecoregion: Grillotia carvajalregorum, Corynosoma australe and Hysterothylacium sp. Multivariate similarity analyses at the infracommunity and the component community levels indicated that the two samples caught at different latitudes in the AUCFZ display almost identical parasite assemblages. This repeatability in assemblage structure was also observed across samples from commercial catches. The homogeneity of the parasite assemblages is considered to be an intrinsic property of fish inhabiting the AUCFZ, independent of their ecology and trophic level.  相似文献

The stomach contents of 532 adult specimens of the Argentine anchovy, Engraulis anchoita, caught in coastal waters of the Argentine Sea from 1994 to 1996, were analyzed. Larger amounts of food were found in the stomachs of anchovies collected in the northern surveys (35–40°S), with the highest values attained in 1994. Main diet items were copepods, appendicularians, cladocerans, fish eggs, and pteropods. Anchovies caught in the southern surveys (40–45°S) ingested less food, whereby the main items were copepods and appendicularians. Plankton samples collected simultaneously with the fishing trawls were also analyzed. Except for Fritillaria borealis, which occurred only in plankton samples, the same appendicularian species (Oikopleura dioica and O. fusiformis) were found in both stomach contents and in plankton samples. The Ivlev selectivity index calculated for O. dioica and O. fusiformis and for the different maturity stages of both species were in all cases ~0, supporting the hypothesis of a non‐selective feeding.  相似文献

Meristic variation among stocks of greater lizardfish Saurida tumbil through the western coasts of the Arabian Gulf and Sea of Oman was examined using meristic characters. Statistical analysis of meristic traits proposed that there is constrained migration of populations of greater lizardfish along the western coast of the Arabian Gulf and Sea of Oman. Overlapping of the two samples from the northern part of the Arabian Gulf (Iraq-Kuwait waters), three samples from the middle region of the Arabian Gulf (Bahrain-Qatar-Saudi Arabia) and two samples from the southern part of the Arabian Gulf/Sea of Oman (United Arab Emirates–Sultanate of Oman) suggested that there are three self-recruiting populations in the studied area. Inspection of the role of each meristic trait variable to Canonical discriminant analysis showed that changes among samples appeared to be linked with the pattern of distribution of water temperature and configuration of current in both the Arabian Gulf and Sea of Oman areas.  相似文献

Fragilariopsis species composition and abundance from the Argentine Sea and Antarctic waters were analyzed using light and electron microscopy. Twelve species (F. curta, F. cylindrus, F. kerguelensis, F. nana, F. obliquecostata, F. peragallii, F. pseudonana, F. rhombica, F. ritscheri, F. separanda, F. sublinearis and F. vanheurckii) are described and compared with samples from the Frenguelli Collection, Museo de La Plata, Argentina. F. peragallii was examined for the first time using electron microscopy, and F. pseudonana was recorded for the first time in Argentinean shelf waters. New information on the girdle view is included, except for the species F. curta, F. cylindrus and F. nana, for which information already existed. In the Argentine Sea, F. pseudonana was the most abundant Fragilariopsis species, and in Antarctic waters, F. curta was most abundant. Of the twelve species of Fragilariopsis documented, four occurred in the Argentine Sea, nine in the Drake Passage and twelve in the Weddell Sea. F. curta, F. kerguelensis, F. pseudonana and F. rhombica were present everywhere.  相似文献

The Argentine hake, Merluccius hubbsi, is one of the most important fishing species in the Argentine Sea due to its great abundance and high-quality meat. The study of the nutritional condition is widely used to determine the physiological state of the fish larvae and to estimate their survival possibilities. The larval nutritional condition reflects the environmental conditions to which they have been exposed and represents a useful instrument to determine favourable nursery areas. It also provides tools for the comprehensive management of a population subjected to fishing exploitation. This study aimed to determine potential differences in the nutritional condition of M. hubbsi larvae from the two fishing stocks (Northern and Southern) of the species. The authors assessed the nutritional condition of larvae captured during the 2012 main reproductive peak in the nursery areas of each population. Two different methodologies were applied: a morphometrical approach, by recording five morphometric variables, and a biochemical technique, employing the RNA/DNA index (RDs) and its derived index of growth performance. The morphometrical indexes did not show differences in the larval condition between both stocks. Nonetheless, the RDs index did detect differences in the nutritional condition of larvae from different stocks. The RDs index of larvae in pre-flexion and flexion stages showed significant differences between stocks, indicating that these stages are more susceptible to starvation. The results suggest that the biochemical indexes prove to be more sensitive than the morphometric indexes to detect slight differences in hake larvae nutritional condition. The scope and limitations of these techniques for the analysis of the nutritional condition of larvae are discussed.  相似文献

The finding of the actinia Synandwakia hozawai in the coastal waters of northern Sakhalin (Sea of Okhotsk) suggests a wider range of this species, which was previously only known to inhabit the coastal waters of eastern Japan. Data are presented on the morphology of the S. hozawai specimen from the Sea of Okhotsk and the types of its nematocysts.  相似文献

An understanding of cetacean distribution is necessary to gain insights into crucial ecological processes for species conservation management. However, cetacean habitat preference and distribution in the northern Savu Sea, Indonesia, are still poorly understood. We use maximum entropy modeling with five environmental predictors to describe habitat preference and distribution of seven cetacean species in the northern Savu Sea. Our study confirms that static predictors are the most important variables in explaining habitat preferences of seven cetacean species in the northern Savu Sea. Seasonally, each cetacean species has a different environmental preference. Globicephala macrorhynchus prefers the open nearshore areas adjacent to deep waters. Stenella attenuata is associated with nearshore habitats and higher productivity areas. Stenella longirostris prefers nearshore habitat during coastal upwelling events. Tursiops truncatus prefers nearshore sheltered habitat. Grampus griseus habitats are highly related to depth and steep gradients around the isobaths of 200–1,000 m. Feresa attenuata are associated with deep waters and cooler sea temperature. Pseudorca crassidens prefers protective bays with productive waters. This study provides important information for reviewing marine spatial plans of the northern Savu Sea, specifically on managing species fisheries interaction, optimizing surveillance, and regulating marine traffic.  相似文献

The role of bottom-up (nutrient availability) and top-down (grazers and viruses mortality) controls on tropical bacterioplankton have been rarely investigated simultaneously from a seasonal perspective. We have assessed them through monthly samplings over 2 years in inshore and offshore waters of the central Red Sea differing in trophic status. Flow cytometric analysis allowed us to distinguish five groups of heterotrophic bacteria based on physiological properties (nucleic acid content, membrane integrity and active respiration), three groups of cyanobacteria (two populations of Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus), heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNFs) and three groups of viruses based on nucleic acid content. The dynamics of bacterioplankton and their top-down controls varied with season and location, being more pronounced in inshore waters. HNFs abundances showed a strong preference for larger prey inshore (r = −0.62 to −0.59, p = 0.001–0.002). Positive relationships between viruses and heterotrophic bacterioplankton abundances were more marked inshore (r = 0.67, p < 0.001) than offshore (r = 0.44, p = 0.03). The negative correlation between HNFs and viruses abundances (r = −0.47, p = 0.02) in shallow waters indicates a persistent seasonal switch between protistan grazing and viral lysis that maintains the low bacterioplankton stocks in the central Red Sea area.  相似文献

The use of parasites as biological tags allowed the identification of two stocks of Brazilian sandperch Pinguipes brasilianus , in the Bonaerense region of the Argentine Sea. A total of 156 adult specimens of P. brasilianus were examined for parasites. Temporal variability in parasite burdens was assessed from fish caught seasonally in coastal waters of two zones, south Bonaerense (during autumn and winter) and north Bonaerense (during summer). Additional data from a previous study, comprising P. brasilianus caught during spring in these two zones, as well as in two populations from north Patagonian gulfs were used for comparative analyses of spatial variability. A total of 14 193 metazoan parasites belonging to 19 species were found. Comparisons of seasonal variability in pooled samples and within each locality showed that locality effects exceeded seasonal ones, suggesting the possible existence of two discrete stocks in the Bonaerense region. These findings were strongly supported by discriminant analyses and comparisons of prevalence and abundance between zones, after pooling seasonal samples within each zone. Further evidence of the discreteness of both stocks was assessed by inclusion of samples from Patagonian gulfs in the discriminant analysis, confirming that their differences were at a inter-population level. The parasite species that contributed most to the separation of the samples were generally those identified as biological markers in previous studies. Differing oceanographic conditions are discussed as potential causes of inter-population variation of parasite burdens.  相似文献

Three stocks of the Brazilian flathead Percophis brasiliensis were identified on the coast of Argentina and Uruguay using parasites as biological tags. A total of 177 fish were examined and 23 parasite species were found. Fish were caught in four zones: north of the Argentine–Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (34°30′–36°30′ S; 53°30′–56°00′ W), south of the Argentine–Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (38°08′ S 57°32′ W), El Rincón zone (39–41° S; 60–62° W) and San Matías Gulf (41°40′–42°10′ S; 63°50′–65°00′ W). Discriminant analyses allowed the identification of three discrete stocks in the four zones (86·44% of classified samples were correctly identified), with P. brasiliensis from both north and south of the Argentine–Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone clumping together, as a single stock. Some species were important in discriminating among groups, Anisakis simplex was related to southern areas, while Grillotia sp., Corynosoma australe and Hysterothylacium sp. were important in determining the position of fish from the Argentine–Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone. These results were corroborated by comparing parasite prevalence and abundance among zones. The main differences were observed in those comparisons involving fish from the San Matías Gulf. Fish from the Argentine–Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone were characterized by higher infections of Grillotia sp., C. australe, Corynosoma cetaceum and Hysterothylacium sp., while the samples from El Rincón and San Matías Gulf showed higher infections of A. simplex. Samples from San Matías Gulf were characterized by lower levels of parasitism for all other species. Differences in environmental factors and their influence on the distribution of zooplankton and other hosts in the food web may be differentially shaping the parasite community structure in each zone, resulting in identifiable stocks of the P. brasiliensis. The present study confirmed the existence of regional biological tags that delineated fish assemblages.  相似文献

The European shelf seas can be divided into regions which have tidally mixed waters and thermally stratified waters. The tidally mixed near shore environments support zooplankton communities dominated by smaller copepods and having large meroplankton contributions. These small copepods (Centropages spp., Temora spp., Acartia spp., Paral Pseudo/Microcalanus spp.) together with the microzooplankton component form a different and more complex food web than the larger copepod/diatom link associated with thermally stratified waters. The copepods Calanus finmarchicus and C. helgolandicus account for over 90% of the copepod dry weight biomass in stratified waters. Although occurring in lower numbers in mixed waters they can still make significant contributions to the biomass. A 31 year time series from the European shelf shows the inter- and intea-annual variability of these species. The basic biology and food web that these two systems support, and the transfer of energy, can result in marked differences in quantity and quality of particulates available as food for fish larvae. Calanus dominated systems allow the primary production to be directed straight through the trophic food chain (diatoms/Calanus/fish larvae) while the near shore communities of smaller copepods limit the amount of energy being transferred to the higher trophic levels. Eighty-two Longhurst Hardy Plankton Recorder hauls were used as the data base for this study. In all cases the zooplankton was dominated by copepods both in numbers and biomass accounting for > 80% of total zooplankton dry weight in the Irish Sea, Celtic Sea, shelf edge of the Celtic Sea and the northern and southern North Sea in Spring.  相似文献

The family Subergorgiidae comprises two genera, Subergorgia with three species and Annella with two species. All the previously known species are distributed in tropical and subtropical waters from the northern Red Sea to the central Pacific. The presence of a subergorgiid in Antarctic waters could support the hypothesis that at least part of the Antarctic fauna has its origin in the Cretaceous period, when Antarctica was part of the Gondwana continent. The new genus Rosgorgia with the new species inexspectata is placed in the family Subergorgiidae by the presence of smooth, fusiform and often anastomosing needles in the axis, wart spindles in the coenenchyme, and coelenteric cavities of polyps only present in the coenenchyme. The genus Rosgorgia differs from Subergorgia and Annella by the presence of tuberculate rods in the axis. It is further distinguished from Annella by the absence of double-disk sclerites in the coenenchyme, and not anastomosing branches. Accepted: 25 June 2000  相似文献

The diet of the spiny dogfish in northern and central Patagonian waters was studied from the by-catch of the bottom trawling fisheries directed to Argentine hake Merluccius hubbsi and Argentine red shrimp Pleoticus muelleri between 1996 and 1998. Food habits were analyzed in relation to sex and maturity of sharks. Also, the relationship between diet and abundance of the main prey was explored. Intraspecific diet comparisons were performed. Differences in diet were found between immature individuals, mature males, and mature females. The Argentine shortfin squid Illex argentinus, the Argentine hake and ctenophores Pleurobrachia pileus were the most important prey for the spiny dogfish. Immature and small individuals were pelagic predators. After sexual maturity, the spiny dogfish shifted its diet. Mature and large individuals tended to reduce the consumption of ctenophores, and increase the consumption of demersal and benthic species. Previous diet studies on the spiny dogfish in 1984–1985 and 1994 indicated that the Argentine hake was the most important prey. In the present study, carried out in 1998, squid was the most important prey, followed by the hake. This diet change was related to the major decrease of hake due to overfishing and the increase of squid abundance between 1994 and 1999.  相似文献

The distribution pattern of Pseudo-nitzschia species, associated phytoplankton flora and its relationships with main environmental factors were studied for the first time in continental shelf surface waters of the Argentine Sea (Southwestern Atlantic Ocean, 38–55°S). Both qualitative and quantitative samples, collected during summer and fall 2003, were examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. Results indicated that the genus Pseudo-nitzschia has a wide distribution along the studied area. It was present at low densities, with infrequent peak abundances and appeared most frequently as a minor component of the diatom populations that typically develop on the continental shelf of the Argentine Sea. Moreover, phytoplankton communities were numerically dominated by unidentified phytoflagellates (≤5 μm) throughout almost all samples analyzed. Eight Pseudo-nitzschia species were identified in our study: P. australis, P. fraudulenta, P. heimii, P. lineola, P. pungens, P. cf. subcurvata, P. turgidula and P. turgiduloides. Of these, P. heimii, P. lineola and P. turgiduloides are new records for the Argentine Sea. Their presence in the area is attributable to the influence of southerly cold water masses. Spatial and temporal variations of the environmental parameters recorded in the study area generally determined the distribution of Pseudo-nitzschia species. P. pungens and P. australis were widely distributed and reached high densities, especially in waters with elevated temperatures and salinities (around 15 °C, 33.8 psu) and low nutrients concentrations. On the other hand, P. heimii, P. lineola, P. turgidula and P. turgiduloides showed a more restricted distribution, with lower densities in relatively cold, less saline (8 °C, 32.45 psu) and nutrient-rich waters. From the Pseudo-nitzschia species found throughout this survey, P. australis, P. fraudulenta, P. pungens and P. turgidula are known as domoic acid (DA) producers around the world, but there is little information on the potential toxicity of these species in Argentina.  相似文献

More than 6000 cod Gadus morhua , sampled in coastal and offshore waters stretching from the Barents Sea down to the North Sea, were analysed for frequencies of alleles at the scnDNA pantophysin locus ( Pan I)[formerly called synaptophysin ( Syp I)]. The significant allele frequency difference between the two major stocks of cod in Norway, north‐east Arctic cod (NEAC) and Norwegian coastal cod (NCC), was upheld in all years of the investigation (1993 to 2001), and applied both to larval cod and post‐juveniles of various ages. On a north‐south axis, the appearance of a latitudinal cline of post‐juvenile (≥1 year) allele frequencies was exposed. The intermediate allele frequencies in coastal areas of northern Norway, seem to a large extent to be caused by intermingling of the two stocks, although the existence of populations of coastal cod with alternative Pan I frequencies could not be ruled out. The role of selection is yet unresolved. Depth of the sampling location seemed to have an effect on the allele frequencies and their temporal stability, while there was no indication of seasonal variation in the frequencies. Breeding structure was the most likely cause for upholding the extreme divergence in Pan I frequencies between NEAC and NCC.  相似文献

Dinophysis is a cosmopolitan genus of marine dinoflagellates, considered as the major proximal source of diarrheic shellfish toxins and the only producer of pectenotoxins (PTX). From three oceanographic expeditions carried out during autumn, spring and late summer along the Argentine Sea (∼38–56°S), lipophilic phycotoxins were determined by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) in size-fractionated plankton samples. Lipophilic toxin profiles were associated with species composition by microscopic analyses of toxigenic phytoplankton. Pectenotoxin-2 and PTX-11 were frequently found together with the presence of Dinophysis acuminata and Dinophysis tripos. By contrast, okadaic acid was rarely detected and only in trace concentrations, and dinophysistoxins were not found. The clear predominance of PTX over other lipophilic toxins in Dinophysis species from the Argentine Sea is in accordance with previous results obtained from north Patagonian Gulfs of the Argentine Sea, and from coastal waters of New Zealand, Chile, Denmark and United States. Dinophysis caudata was rarely found and it was confined to the north of the sampling area. Because of low cell densities, neither D. caudata nor Dinophysis norvegica could be biogeographically related to lipophilic toxins in this study. Nevertheless, the current identification of D. norvegica in the southern Argentine Sea is the first record for the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Given the typical toxigenicity of this species on a global scale, this represents an important finding for future surveillance of plankton-toxin associations.  相似文献

The population structure of bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus, along the U.S. Atlantic coast has recently been redefined from one homogenous population into five coastal stocks. Local studies indicate even finer structure, primarily based on isolation of dolphins inhabiting estuaries. We identified population structuring of non‐estuarine coastal bottlenose dolphins during a study in New Jersey, the northern range along the Atlantic Coast. Using photo‐identification and distribution survey results, an analysis identified two major clusters of individuals significantly separated by five variables (distance from shoreline, group size, occurrence of the barnacle Xenobalanus globicipitis, avoidance behavior, and individual coloration). Sightings assigned to cluster 1 occurred in nearshore shallow waters (0–1.9 km, x?= 3.5 m), and those assigned to cluster 2 occurred further offshore in deeper waters (1.9–6 km, x?= 9.5 m). Only eight of 194 individuals (4%) were identified in both regions. Collectively, this suggests an occurrence of two stocks that are spatially, physically, and behaviorally distinguishable over a small distance. These results indicate that complexity in Tursiops population structure is not limited to latitudinal gradients or barriers created by estuarine habitats, but also by partitioning of habitat as a function of distance from shore and depth over small distances.  相似文献

The relationships between hydrography and spatial distribution of several biochemical indicators of microplankton biomass (chlorophyll, protein and ATP) were studied in an area covering the eastern part of the Bransfield Strait and the northern part of the Weddell Sea, during Antarctic summer (January 1994). Four hydrographic zones were identified: (a) the northern part of the Bransfield Strait, covered by waters of Bellings- hausen Sea origin; (b) a Weddell Sea water mass that affected most of the study area; (c) the Weddell-Scotia Confluence waters, observed north of Elephant Island; and (d) waters influenced by ice melting, found towards the southeastern part of the sampled area. The highest values of biomass indicators (chlorophyll a, ATP and protein) were found in the zones affected by ice-melting processes and in waters from the Bellingshausen Sea. The lowest values of all biochemical parameters were found in the Weddell Sea and in the Weddell-Scotia Confluence waters. A high variability in the hydrographic structure and the distribution of biochemical indicators was observed. The degree of stabilization of the water column, the depth of the upper mixed layer and the grazing pressure of herbivorous zooplankton played a major role in the development, accumulation and spatial variability of microplankton biomass.
