The purposes of this study were to provide baseline data on the peak oxygen consumption (VO2) of British children, aged 11-16 years and to examine the peak VO2 of children in relation to their pubertal stage of development. The peak VO2 of 226 boys and 194 girls was determined during either treadmill running or cycle ergometry. The sexual maturity of 320 of the children was estimated using Tanner's indices. Peak VO2 increased with chronological age in both sexes and from about the age of 12 years boys exhibited significantly higher (P less than 0.05) values than girls. Boys' peak VO2 in relation to body mass was consistent over the age range studied and was superior (P less than 0.05) to girls' values at all ages. It appears that mass-related peak VO2 is independent of sexual maturity in both sexes. The more mature boys demonstrated a significantly higher (P less than 0.05) peak VO2 (1.min-1) than the less mature boys on both ergometers. The more mature girls demonstrated significantly higher (P less than 0.05) peak VO2 (1.min-1) than the less mature girls only on the cycle ergometer. On both ergometers the differences between the peak VO2 of the girls and boys were more pronounced in the mature children whether expressed in relation to body mass or not. Comparison of the results with earlier data drawn from smaller samples failed to provide evidence to suggest that British children's peak VO2 has declined in recent years. No study with which to compare our maturity peak VO2 data appears to be available.  相似文献

The major factors thought to control the distribution of associations on the sea cliffs in Britain are discussed in relation to the zonation of cliff vegetation, and some experiments to investigate the effects of these factors are described.The seeds of the maritime cliff species are able to germinate in higher salinities than those of closely related inland species.Relative growth rates of maritime cliff species indicate stimulation at low salinities over non-saline conditions, and less reduction in growth at higher salinities than those of closely related inland species.Increasing salinity reduces both photosynthesis and dark respiration in Lavatera arborea. Mesophyll and stomatal resistances are increased while transpiration is reduced.The distribution of ions within Lavatera arborea grown at different salinities indicates differential accumulation between young leaves, old leaves and roots.Nomenclature follows Clapham, Tutin & Warburg (1962).  相似文献

Arachidonate 12-lipoxygenases with reference to their selective inhibitors   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Lipoxygenase is a dioxygenase recognizing a 1-cis,4-cis-pentadiene of polyunsaturated fatty acids. The enzyme oxygenates various carbon atoms of arachidonic acid as a substrate and produces 5-, 8-, 12- or 15-hydroperoxyeicosatetraenoic acid with a conjugated diene chromophore. The enzyme is referred to as 5-, 8-, 12- or 15-lipoxygenase, respectively. Earlier we found two isoforms of 12-lipoxygenase, leukocyte- and platelet-type enzymes, which were distinguished by substrate specificity, catalytic activity, primary structure, gene intron size, and antigenicity. Recently, the epidermis-type enzyme was found as the third isoform. Attempts have been made to find isozyme-specific inhibitors of 12-lipoxygenase, and earlier we found hinokitiol, a tropolone, as a potent inhibitor selective for the platelet-type 12-lipoxygenase. More recently, we tested various catechins of tea leaves and found that (-)-gallocatechin gallate was a potent and selective inhibitor of human platelet 12-lipoxygenase with an IC50 of 0.14 microM. The compound was much less active with 12-lipoxygenase of leukocyte-type, 15-, 8-, and 5-lipoxygenases, and cyclooxygenases-1 and -2.  相似文献

Growth patterns of the 1982 year-class, individual growth patterns, age and size at sexual maturity and longevity in females of the river-sculpin,Cottus hangiongensis (Cottidae), were examined along the course of the Daitobetsu River of southern Hokkaido, Japan. Growth of females slightly varied both along the river course and among individual fishes: slow growth occurs in females from the lower reaches, while more rapid growth occurs in females from upstream areas. Body size and age at the first sexual maturity of females slightly increased towards the upstream, from 52 mm SL and 2 years in the most downstream area to 72 mm SL and 2–3 years in the uppermost site. Longevity was estimated to be 7 years in the downstream areas and 8–9 years in the upstream sites. These results suggest that female life history varies along the course of the river and thus allow us to consider the following alternative reproductive tactics: when females stay in the lower reaches, they attain sexual maturity at a smaller body size and younger age, and have a small clutch size, but when females migrate into the upper reaches, their maturity is delayed until they reach a larger body size and older age, and have a greater clutch size.  相似文献

There is considerable varietal variation in the characteristics of the potato. The characteristics of any one variety of potato may be very greatly modified by environmental conditions. Rainfall and percentage dry matter may be inversely correlated, as may rainfall and yield in localities with a medium or high precipitation. There is an apparent correlation between time of maturity, percentage dry matter, and texture when cooked, late varieties having a higher percentage dry matter and a more floury texture than early varieties. It is a fundamental requirement of potatoes for drying purposes that they should not discolour on cooking. In addition the texture of the cooked potato should be suitable for the method of drying employed, and for the type of reconstituted product desired, and the percentage dry matter should be as high as is compatible with the foregoing conditions.  相似文献

Relation of the ovipositor structure and the egg-laying habit with the larval biology in the family Scathophagidae was investigated. The ovipositor was examined and illustrated for 29 species including Phrosia albilabris (F.), Cordilura umbrosa (Lw.), Spathephilus breviventris (Lw.), Scathophaga stercoraria (L.), Chaetosa punctipes (Mg.), Pogonota barbata (Ztt.), Cochliarium cuneiventris (Ztt.), and Delina nigrita (Fll.). Species with different bionomics and different larval feeding tissues, i.e., different substrates for oviposition, were distinguished. Comparative morphological analysis of the author’s and literature data on 29 species belonging to 15 genera has shown the constancy of the ovipositor structure within the genera examined. Two principal types of the ovipositor structure were distinguished: (a) the elongate ovipositor with the distal position of the terminal part of the abdomen (the proctiger), this type is characteristic of phytophagous species (the delinine type); and (b) the shortened ovipositor with the proctiger shifted dorsally (the scathophagine type), this type is typical of predatory and saprophagous species. The delinine type of the ovipositor is adapted to inserting eggs into hard plant tissues. Changes in the feeding habits of the larvae were found to be associated with changes in the ovipositor structure. The dependence of the ovipositor structure on the egg-laying habit and on the larval biology enables hypothesizing biological features of those species for which the relevant data are not available yet. The morphogenesis of the ovipositor is speculated based on the data on its structure.  相似文献

To elucidate innervation in the upper esophageal sphincter (UES) muscle of the eel, a key muscle in swallowing, repetitive electrical field stimulation (EFS; 30 mA, 40 V, 300 micros, 10 Hz, 10 trains) was employed. Anatomically, the eel UES muscle consists of striated fibers. The EFS-induced contraction of the UES was completely blocked by tetrodotoxin and curare, and abolished in Ca2+ -free Ringer solution. These results suggest that the EFS stimulates nerve fibers specifically and releases acetylcholine as a neurotransmitter. In fact, acetylcholine and carbachol constricted the UES in a concentration-dependent manner. Even after blocking neuronal firing with tetrodotoxin, acetylcholine constricted the UES muscle, suggesting the existence of acetylcholine receptors on the UES muscle cells. Both EFS- and carbachol-evoked contractions of the UES were blocked by curare at a lower concentration than by atropine or hexamethonium, suggesting that the acetylcholine receptor is nicotinic. Even in Ca2+ -free Ringer solution, a direct current stimulus (2 s duration) constricted the UES muscle to an extent similar to that in the presence of Ca2+, indicating that the muscle contraction itself does not need extracellular Ca2+, i.e., the muscle can be constricted by a release of Ca2+ from the sarcoplasmic reticulum.  相似文献
