The purpose of this investigation was to determine the validity of the non-exercise-based equations of Davis et al. (13), Jones et al. (20), and Neder et al. (30) for estimating the ventilatory threshold (VT) in samples of aerobically trained men and women. One hundred and forty-four aerobically trained men (mean +/- SD age, 41.0 +/- 11.6 years; N = 83) and women (37.1 +/- 9.0 years, N = 61) performed a maximal incremental test to determine VO2max and observed VT on a cycle ergometer. The observed VT was determined by gas exchange measurements using the V-slope method (VCO2/VO2) in conjunction with analyses of the ventilatory equivalents (i.e., minute ventilation VE/VO2 and VE/VCO2) and end-tidal gas tensions (i.e., P(ET)O2 and P(ET)CO2) for oxygen and carbon dioxide. The predicted VT values from 14 equations were compared to the observed VT values by examining the constant error (CE), standard error of estimate (SEE), Pearson correlation coefficient (r), and total error (TE). The results of this investigation indicated that all 14 equations resulted in significant (p < 0.008) CE values ranging from 1.13 to 1.72 L x min(-1) for the men and from 0.58 to 1.12 L x min(-1) for the women. Furthermore, the SEE, r, and TE values ranged from 0.37 to 0.54, from 0.36 to 0.53, and from 0.68 to 1.81 L x min(-1), respectively. The lowest TE values for the men and women represented 45 and 36% of the mean of the observed VT values, respectively. The results of this study indicated that the errors associated with all 14 equations were too large to be of practical value for estimating VT in aerobically trained men and women.  相似文献

The purposes of the present study were to (a) modify previously published Vo(2)max equations using the constant error (CE = mean difference between actual and predicted Vo(2)max) values from Malek et al. (28); (b) cross-validate the modified equations to determine their accuracy for estimating Vo(2)max in aerobically trained men; (c) derive a new non- exercise-based equation for estimating Vo(2)max in aerobically trained men if the modified equations are not found to be accurate; and (d) cross-validate the new Vo(2)max equation using the predicted residual sum of squares (PRESS) statistic and an independent sample of aerobically trained men. One hundred and fifty-two aerobically trained men (Vo(2)max mean +/- SD = 4,154 +/- 629 ml.min(-1)) performed a maximal incremental test on a cycle ergometer to determine actual Vo(2)max. An aerobically trained man was defined as someone who had participated in continuous aerobic exercise 3 or more sessions per week for a minimum of 1 hour per session for at least the past 18 months. Nine previously published Vo(2)max equations were modified for use with aerobically trained men. The predicted Vo(2)max values from the 9 modified equations were compared to actual Vo(2)max by examining the CE, standard error of estimate (SEE), validity coefficient (r), and total error (TE). Cross-validation of the modified non-exercise-based equations on a random subsample of 50 subjects resulted in a %TE > or = 13% of the mean of actual Vo(2)max. Therefore, the following non-exercise-based Vo(2)max equation was derived from a random subsample of 112 subjects: Vo(2)max (ml.min(-1)) = 27.387(weight in kg) + 26.634(height in cm) - 27.572(age in years) + 26.161(h.wk(-1) of training) + 114.904(intensity of training using the Borg 6-20 scale) + 506.752(natural log of years of training) - 4,609.791 (R = 0.82, R(2) adjusted = 0.65, and SEE = 378 ml.min(-1)). Cross-validation of this equation on the remaining sample of 40 subjects resulted in a %TE of 10%. Therefore, the non-exercise-based equation derived in the present study is recommended for estimating Vo(2)max in aerobically trained men.  相似文献

Musculo-articular stiffness of the triceps surae (TS) increases with age in prepubescent children, under both passive and active conditions. This study investigates whether these changes in muscle stiffness influence the amplitude of the reflex response to muscle stretch. TS stiffness and reflex activities were measured in 46 children (7-11 yr old) and in 9 adults. The TS Hoffmann reflex (H reflex) and T reflex (tendon jerk) in response to taping the Achilles tendon were evaluated at rest and normalized to the maximal motor response (Mmax). Sinusoidal perturbations of passive or activated muscles were used to evoke stretch reflexes and to measure passive and active musculoarticular stiffness. The children's Hmax-to-Mmax ratio did not change with age and did not differ from adult values. The T-to-Mmax ratio increased with age but remained significantly lower than in adults. Passive stiffness also increased with age and was correlated with the T-to-Mmax ratio. Similarly, the children's stretch reflex and active musculoarticular stiffness were significantly correlated and increased with age. We conclude that prepubescent children have smaller T reflexes and stretch reflexes than adults, and the lower musculoarticular stiffness is mainly responsible for these smaller reflexes, as indicated by the parallel increases in reflex and stiffness.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the biomechanics of the lower limb, during landing in female prepubertal gymnasts and prepubertal untrained girls, aged 9–12 years. Ten healthy participants were included in each group and performed five landings from 20, 40, and 60 cm. Kinematics, ground reaction forces (GRF) and electromyogram (EMG) from the lateral gastrocnemius, tibialis anterior, and vastus lateralis are presented. Gymnasts had higher vertical GRF and shorter braking phase during landing. Compared to untrained girls, gymnasts exhibited for all examined drop heights more knee flexion before and at ground contact, but less knee flexion at maximum knee flexion position. Especially when increasing drop heights the gymnasts activated their examined muscles earlier, and generally they had higher pre- and post landing EMG amplitudes normalized to the peak EMG at 60 cm drop height. Furthermore, gymnasts had lower antagonist EMG for the tibialis anterior compared to untrained girls, especially when landing from higher heights. It is concluded that the landing strategy preferred by gymnasts is influenced by long-term and specialized training and induces a stiffer landing pattern. This could have implications in injury prevention, which requires further investigation.  相似文献

Estimates of the average intra-individual biological variability for plasma lipids and lipoproteins differs substantially among published studies. Moreover, this topic does not appear to have received consideration in exercise and health literature with normal, healthy children as subjects. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to determine the short-term, day-to-day variability of the lipid-lipoprotein profile from 19 children [mean (SD), 11.5 (0.8) years] from 3 separate venous blood samples. Intra-individual standard deviations, variances and coefficients of variance were determined for total cholesterol (TC), triacylglycerol (TG), high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), HDL-C sub-fractions HDL2 and HDL3, and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C). The intra-individual variation for TC and LDL-C was used to calculate the 95% confidence intervals (CIs) around the National Cholesterol Education Programme (NCEP 1991) cut-off points. The main finding was that all of the measured blood analytes including TC, TG, HDL-C, HDL2, HDL3, and LDL-C varied considerably from day-to-day. Coefficients of total variation ranged from 3.5% for HDL3 to 25.4% for TG. Classification of individuals using NCEP guidelines was difficult based on only one or two blood samples. The magnitude of variation for LDL-C meant that a 95% CI could not be constructed around the NCEP borderline-high classification from either one or two samples. However, averaging three TC and LDL-C measurements increased the likelihood of classification within the 95% CI. The results indicate that when using the NCEP guidelines for children and adolescents, true concentrations for TC and LDL-C should be based on the mean of multiple samples.  相似文献

We investigated hormonal regulators of growth and development, leptin levels, body composition, neuromuscular performance, and the associations among them in trained prepubertal athletes (experimental group [EG]) and an untrained control group (CG). Informed consent was obtained from the children and their parents. Their maturation stage was evaluated according to Tanner's criteria. There were no differences between EG and CG in physical characteristics, body mass index (BMI), lean body mass, testosterone (T), sex hormone-binding globulin, free androgen index, growth hormone (GH), hand grip strength, and jumping performance. Leptin levels and percent fat of the EG were significantly lower than those of the CG (p < 0.05-0.005). Leptin levels were significantly correlated to body fat and BMI for both the EG and the CG (r = 0.51-0.79). There is little evidence that leptin has a positive effect on growth and anabolic factors. Sex hormone-binding globulin and GH may explain the variation of leptin in athletes with low T (R(2) = 0.43) and in CG (R(2) = 0.35), respectively. Leptin seems to be a permissive factor for the onset of puberty, and the training background needs an optimal biological maturation to produce significant differences in muscle and power performance.  相似文献

The improved glucose tolerance and increased insulin sensitivity associated with regular exercise appear to be the result, in large part, of the residual effects of the last bout of exercise. To determine the effects of exercise intensity on this response, glucose tolerance and the insulin response to a glucose load were determined in seven well-trained male subjects [maximal O2 uptake (VO2max) = 58 ml.kg-1.min-1] and in seven nontrained male subjects (VO2max = 49 ml.kg-1.min-1) in the morning after an overnight fast 1) 40 h after the last training session (control), 2) 14 h after 40 min of exercise on a cycle ergometer at 40% VO2max, and 3) 14 h after 40 min of exercise at 80% VO2max. Subjects replicated their diets for 3 days before each test and ate a standard meal the evening before the oral glucose tolerance test. No differences in the 3-h insulin or glucose response were observed between the control trial and before exercise at either 40 or 80% VO2max in the trained subjects. In the nontrained subjects the plasma insulin response was decreased by 40% after a single bout of exercise at either 40 or 80% VO2max (7.0 X 10(3) vs. 5.0 X 10(3), P less than 0.05; 3.8 X 10(3) microU.ml-1.180 min-1, P less than 0.01). The insulin response after a single bout of exercise in the nontrained subjects was comparable with the insulin responses found in the trained subjects for the control and exercise trials.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Indicator bacteria, Salmonella spp., and total aerobic bacteria were determined in samples of undigested sludge and sludge that had been treated by one or two stages of aerobic digestion. Aerobic sludge digestion reduced the level of indicator bacteria by 1 to 2 log10 per g. The level of Salmonella spp. was also reduced during aerobic treatment of sludge. In general, aerobic treatment of sludge reduced, but did not eliminate, indicator bacteria and Salmonella spp.  相似文献

Maximal flows at functional residual capacity (VmaxFRC) from partial forced expiratory flow-volume (PEFV) curves were obtained in 14 normal preschool children (8 boys, 6 girls) of average age 44 mo, under general anesthesia before elective surgery. PEFV curves were generated from end inspiration by rapid compression of the chest wall with an inflatable jacket. VmaxFRC, expressed in milliliter per second, correlated linearly with height, weight, age, and FRC in milliliter and milliliters per kilogram. The best correlation of VmaxFRC (ml/s) was to height to the power of 2.47, which agrees with the results predicted by wave-speed theory. Mean FRC-corrected VmaxFRC was 2.42 +/- 0.50 (SD) FRC's/s with no significant difference between boys (2.35 FRC's/s) and girls (2.51 FRC's/s). There was no correlation between lung-size corrected VmaxFRC and height, weight, or age, but it tended to decrease with increasing FRC. The intersubject variability for VmaxFRC was reduced by normalizing for FRC, and was significantly better than that reported for awake children. This can be attributed to the greater control over volume history and more reliable maximal flow generation during anesthesia. The intrasubject coefficient of variation (CV) for VmaxFRC was 12.2%, and the intersubject CV was 20.0%. The difference may represent the variability due to dysanapsis. It is concluded that dysanapsis is not a prominent factor in children of this age group. In addition, the similarity of the regression equation for VmaxFRC vs. height to that of FRC vs. height supports the concept of equidimensional growth of the airways and lung parenchyma.  相似文献

Despite many reports of long-lasting elevation of metabolism after exercise, little is known regarding the effects of exercise intensity and duration on this phenomenon. This study examined the effect of a constant duration (30 min) of cycle ergometer exercise at varied intensity levels [50 and 70% of maximal O2 consumption (VO2max)] on 3-h recovery of oxygen uptake (VO2). VO2 and respiratory exchange ratios were measured by open-circuit spirometry in five trained female cyclists (age 25 +/- 1.7 yr) and five untrained females (age 27 +/- 0.8 yr). Postexercise VO2 measured at intervals for 3 h after exercise was greater (P less than 0.01) after exercise at 50% VO2max in trained (0.40 +/- 0.01 l/min) and untrained subjects (0.39 +/- 0.01 l/min) than after 70% VO2max in (0.31 +/- 0.02 l/min) and untrained subjects (0.29 +/- 0.02 l/min). The lower respiratory exchange ratio values (P less than 0.01) after 50% VO2max in trained (0.78 +/- 0.01) and untrained subjects (0.80 +/- 0.01) compared with 70% VO2max in trained (0.81 +/- 0.01) and untrained subjects (0.83 +/- 0.01) suggest that an increase in fat metabolism may be implicated in the long-term elevation of metabolism after exercise. This was supported by the greater estimated fatty acid oxidation (P less than 0.05) after 50% VO2max in trained (147 +/- 4 mg/min) and untrained subjects (133 +/- 9 mg/min) compared with 70% VO2max in trained (101 +/- 6 mg/min) and untrained subjects (85 +/- 7 mg/min).  相似文献

The aim of the study was to analyze the relations between some criteria of the biological age (growth age, biological proportional age) and motor efficiency in school-aged boys and girls (8-9 and 12-13 years old) with considerably above-average and considerably below-average total score of the test battery UNIFITTEST (6-60). The growth age results of 8 chosen groups (17-25 individuals in one group) showed that classifying the selected individuals into the normative height bands was in no relation to their age, sex or level of motor efficiency. As for the height-weight proportionality, the older the individuals were, the more of them belonged to the bands with relatively bigger weight. Analyzing the results of the biological proportional age, we did not find any significant differences between the groups of identical sex, age and different motor efficiency. Boys and girls with either low or high motor efficiency were mostly biologically average and biologically accelerated in the growth and development.  相似文献

Thermodynamic parameters for internal loops of unpaired adenosines in oligoribonucleotides have been measured by optical melting studies. Comparisons are made between helices containing symmetric and asymmetric loops. Asymmetric loops destabilize a helix more than symmetric loops. The differences in free energy between symmetric and asymmetric loops are roughly half the magnitude suggested from a study of parameters required to give accurate predictions of RNA secondary structure [Papanicolaou, C., Gouy, M., & Ninio, J. (1984) Nucleic Acids Res. 12, 31-44]. Circular dichroism spectra indicate no major structural difference between helices containing symmetric and asymmetric loops. The measured sequence dependence of internal loop stability is not consistent with approximations used in current algorithms for predicting RNA secondary structure.  相似文献

To evaluate methods proposed for the early detection of small airways obstruction. we have compared the precision of the forced expiratory flow-volume curve and of measurements of the frequency dependence of lung compliance in normal subjects, in 10 of whom these measurements were made on four occasions, and in 5 on two occasions. The maximal expiratory flow rate was highly reproducible, revealing consistent differences between these normal subjects, particularly when measured at 60% of TLC and corrected for differences in body size. The frequency-dependence measurements, expressed as the slope of the regression line relating dynamic compliance to frequency, showed much greater variation between repeated measurements in the same subject. Comparison with earlier published accounts is difficult in view of lack of quantitative data, but the variability between single measurements on different normal subjects appears to be similar to that which we have found when the results are expressed in a comparable manner. Dynamic compliance at a frequency of 1 Hz lay between 48% and 141% of the value obtained by extrapolation to zero frequency.  相似文献

The electron transport chain of the gram-negative bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa, grown aerobically, contained a number of primary dehydrogenases and respiratory components (soluble flavin, bound flavin, coenzyme Q9, heme b, heme c, and cytochrome o) in membrane particles of the organism. Cytochrome o, about 50% of the b-type cytochrome, seemed to function as a terminal oxidase in the respiratory chain. The electron transport chain of P. aeruginosa grown aerobically was suggested to be lined up in order of primary dehydrogenase, b, c1, c, o, and oxygen.  相似文献

Chromium excretion of eight trained and five sedentary men was determined on rest days and after exercise to exhaustion at 90% of maximum O2 consumption (VO2max) to determine if degree of physical fitness affects urinary Cr losses. Subjects were fed a constant daily diet containing approximately 9 micrograms Cr/1,000 kcal. VO2max of the trained runners was in the good or above range based on their age and that of the sedentary subjects was average or below. While consuming the control diet, basal urinary Cr excretion of subjects who exercise regularly was significantly lower than that of the sedentary control subjects, 0.09 +/- 0.01 and 0.21 +/- 0.03 microgram/day (mean +/- SE), respectively. When subjects consumed self-chosen diets, basal urinary Cr excretion of the trained subjects was also significantly lower than that of the untrained subjects. Daily urinary Cr excretion of trained subjects was significantly higher on the day of a single exercise bout at 90% VO2max compared with nonexercise days, 0.12 +/- 0.02 and 0.09 +/- 0.01 microgram/day, respectively. Urinary Cr excretion of sedentary subjects was not altered after controlled exercise. These data demonstrate that basal urinary Cr excretion and excretion in response to exercise are related to VO2max and therefore degree of physical fitness.  相似文献
