A more fundamental understanding about the act of manual lifting can be provided by the assessment of the total production of power and the power generated in joints. The present study is concerned with the validity of the estimations of these parameters. Four subjects lifted an 18.8 kg load while they were filmed and ground reaction forces were measured. The total generated power was calculated in three ways: (1) by summation of joint powers, (2) on the basis of the rate of change of the summed energy contents of human body segments, and (3) on the basis of the rate of change of the body energy estimated from ground reaction forces. The results were compared. Furthermore, at a segmental level the power supplied to or absorbed from a segment was compared to the rate of change of its energy content. The resulting instantaneous power curves from the three different methods showed a high level of agreement, which supports their validity. However, some minor discrepancies were observed. The major cause of the observed difference between the rate of change of the summed segmental energy contents and the summed joint powers was found at a segmental level. It was observed that segmental link lengths (i.e. distances between proximal and distal markers) changed during movement, which yielded discrepancies between the power flow to or from a segment and the rate of change of its energy content.  相似文献

Oxygen consumption ( O2), heart rate, ventilation and central rating of perceived exertion (RPE) in repetitive lifting while executing squat and stoop techniques were investigated in ten male forestry workers. In all five mass/frequency combinations studied, O2 was significantly higher for the squat than for the stoop technique. No differences were found in RPE between the techniques. The O2 and RPE recordings were also related to those obtained during maximal repetitive lifting (same lifting technique) and maximal treadmill running. The O2 expressed as a percentage of that obtained during maximal repetitive lifting with the same lifting technique was defined as relative aerobic intensity (% O2max, lifting). The % O2max, lifting was not significantly different between the techniques except for the lowest mass lifted (1 kg). This study therefore would support the hypothesis that RPE is more closely related to % O2max, lifting than to absolute aerobic intensity. Related to maximal treadmill running, it was demonstrated for both lifting techniques that relative RPE (percentage of the RPE during maximal running) was more accurate than relative O2 (percentage of maximal O2 during maximal running) for determining the % O2max, lifting in repetitive lifting. The study showed that the higher O2 during squat. lifting compared to stoop lifting was caused by the O2 expended in lifting and lowering the body rather than the O2 expended lifting and lowering the external mass. It was concluded that the stoop technique was not superior to the squat technique in terms of central RPE. Based on % O2max, lifting, there may be a rationale for choosing the stoop technique during repetitive lifting with light masses, but not with heavy masses.  相似文献

By simultaneously measuring aerodynamic performance, wing kinematics, and metabolic activity, we have estimated the in vivo limits of mechanical power production and efficiency of the asynchronous flight muscle (IFM) in three species of ectoparasitoid wasps genus Nasonia (N. giraulti, N. longicornis, and N. vitripennis). The 0.6 mg animals were flown under tethered flight conditions in a flight simulator that allowed modulation of power production by employing an open-loop visual stimulation technique. At maximum locomotor capacity, flight muscles of Nasonia are capable to sustain 72.2 +/- 18.3 W kg(-1) muscle mechanical power at a chemo-mechanical conversion efficiency of approximately 9.8 +/- 0.9%. Within the working range of the locomotor system, profile power requirement for flight dominates induced power requirement suggesting that the cost to overcome wing drag places the primary limit on overall flight performance. Since inertial power is only approximately 25% of the sum of induced and profile power requirements, Nasonia spp. may not benefit from elastic energy storage during wing deceleration phases. A comparison between wing size-polymorphic males revealed that wing size reduction is accompanied by a decrease in total flight muscle volume, muscle mass-specific mechanical power production, and total flight efficiency. In animals with small wings maximum total flight efficiency is below 0.5%. The aerodynamic and power estimates reported here for Nasonia are comparable to values reported previously for the fruit fly Drosophila flying under similar experimental conditions, while muscle efficiency of the tiny wasp is more at the lower end of values published for various other insects.  相似文献

It has been proposed that field-based tests (FT) used to estimate functional threshold power (FTP) result in power output (PO) equivalent to PO at lactate threshold (LT). However, anecdotal evidence from regional cycling teams tested for LT in our laboratory suggested that PO at LT underestimated FTP. It was hypothesized that estimated FTP is not equivalent to PO at LT. The LT and estimated FTP were measured in 7 trained male competitive cyclists (VO2max = 65.3 ± 1.6 ml O2·kg(-1)·min(-1)). The FTP was estimated from an 8-minute FT and compared with PO at LT using 2 methods; LT(Δ1), a 1 mmol·L(-1) or greater rise in blood lactate in response to an increase in workload and LT(4.0), blood lactate of 4.0 mmol·L(-1). The estimated FTP was equivalent to PO at LT(4.0) and greater than PO at LT(Δ1). VO2max explained 93% of the variance in individual PO during the 8-minute FT. When the 8-minute FT PO was expressed relative to maximal PO from the VO2max test (individual exercise performance), VO2max explained 64% of the variance in individual exercise performance. The PO at LT was not related to 8-minute FT PO. In conclusion, FTP estimated from an 8-minute FT is equivalent to PO at LT if LT(4.0) is used but is not equivalent for all methods of LT determination including LT(Δ1).  相似文献

The influence of different relative intensities on power output was investigated in the present study in order to identify the optimal load that maximizes power output during the hang power clean. Fifteen men (age: 22.1 +/- 2.0 years, height: 180.1 +/- 6.3 cm, and body mass: 89.4 +/- 14.7 kg) performed the hang power cleans on a forceplate at 30-90% of one repetition maximum (1RM). Peak power was maximized at 70% 1RM, which was, however, not significantly different from peak power at 50, 60, 80, and 90% 1RM. Average power also was maximized at 70% 1RM, which was not significantly different from average power at 40, 50, 60, 80, and 90% 1RM. It was concluded that (a) the relative intensity had a significant influence on power output, and (b) power output can be maximized at a submaximal load during the hang power clean.  相似文献

There are many outdoor work environments that involve the combination of repetitive, fatiguing lifting tasks and less-than-optimal footing (muddy/slippery ground surfaces). The focus of the current research was to evaluate the effects of lifting-induced fatigue of the low back extensors on lifting kinematics and ground reaction forces. Ten participants performed a repetitive lifting task over a period of 8 minutes. As they performed this task, the ground reaction forces and whole body kinematics were captured using a force platform and magnetic motion tracking system, respectively. Fatigue was verified in this experiment by documenting a decrease in the median frequency of the bilateral erector spinae muscles (pretest-posttest). Results indicate significant (p < 0.05) increases in the magnitude of the peak anterior/posterior (increased by an average of 18.3%) and peak lateral shear forces (increased by an average of 24.3%) with increasing time into the lifting bout. These results have implications for work environments such as agriculture and construction, where poor footing conditions and requirements for considerable manual materials handling may interact to create an occupational scenario with an exceptionally high risk of a slip and fall.  相似文献

The effects of 10 mM (high) and 70 microM (physiologically relevant) caffeine on force, work output, and power output of isolated mouse extensor digitorum longus (EDL) and soleus muscles were investigated in vitro during recovery from fatigue at 35 degrees C. To monitor muscle performance during recovery from fatigue, we regularly subjected the muscle to a series of cyclical work loops. Force, work, and power output during shortening were significantly higher after treatment with 10 mM caffeine, probably as a result of increased Ca2+ release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum. However, the work required to relengthen the muscle also increased in the presence of 10 mM caffeine. This was due to a slowing of relaxation and an increase in muscle stiffness. The combination of increased work output during shortening and increased work input during lengthening had different effects on the two muscles. Net power output of mouse soleus muscle decreased as a result of 10 mM caffeine exposure, whereas net power output of the EDL muscle showed a transient, significant increase. Treatment with 70 microM caffeine had no significant effect on force, work, or power output of EDL or soleus muscles, suggesting that the plasma concentrations found when caffeine is used to enhance performance in human athletes might not directly affect the contractile performance of fatigued skeletal muscle.  相似文献

The hydrophobic domain of the signal peptide of OmpF-Lpp, a model secretory protein, was systematically engineered so as to be composed of different lengths of polyleucine residues or polymers with alternate leucine and alanine residues, and the effects of the length and nature of the hydrophobic stretch on the rate of in vitro translocation were studied using everted membrane vesicles of Escherichia coli. The translocation reaction exhibited high substrate specificity as to the number of hydrophobic residues. The results suggest that the hydrophobic domain is recognized specifically by a component(s) of the secretory machinery rather than nonspecifically by the hydrophobic region of the membrane. The in vitro translocation thus demonstrated required SecA and ATP and was markedly enhanced upon imposition of the proton motive force, as in the case of secretory proteins possessing a natural signal peptide. The highest translocation rate was obtained with the octamer in the case of polyleucine-containing signal peptides, whereas it was the decamer in the case of ones containing both leucine and alanine. These results suggest that the total hydrophobicity of the hydrophobic region of the signal peptides is an important determinant of the substrate specificity.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to clarify the effect of static stretching on muscular performance during concentric isotonic (dynamic constant external resistance [DCER]) muscle actions under various loads. Concentric DCER leg extension power outputs were assessed in 12 healthy male subjects after 2 types of pretreatment. The pretreatments included (a) static stretching treatment performing 6 types of static stretching on leg extensors (4 sets of 30 seconds each with 20-second rest periods; total duration 20 minutes) and (b) nonstretching treatment by resting for 20 minutes in a sitting position. Loads during assessment of the power output were set to 5, 30, and 60% of the maximum voluntary contractile (MVC) torque with isometric leg extension in each subject. The peak power output following the static stretching treatment was significantly (p < 0.05) lower than that following the nonstretching treatment under each load (5% MVC, 418.0 +/- 82.2 W vs. 466.2 +/- 89.5 W; 30% MVC, 506.4 +/- 82.8 W vs. 536.4 +/- 97.0 W; 60% MVC, 478.6 +/- 77.5 W vs. 523.8 +/- 97.8 W). The present study demonstrated that relatively extensive static stretching significantly reduces power output with concentric DCER muscle actions under various loads. Common power activities are carried out by DCER muscle actions under various loads. Therefore, the result of the present study suggests that relatively extensive static stretching decreases power performance.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine how oxygen uptake (Vo2) in decrement-load exercise (DLE) is affected by changing rate of decrease in power output. DLE was performed at three different rates of decrease in power output (10, 20 and 30 watts.min(-1): DLE10, DLE20 and DLE30, respectively) from power output corresponding to 90 % of peak Vo2. Vo2 exponentially increased and then decreased, and the rate of its decrease was reduced at low power output. The values of Vo2 in the three DLE tests were not different for the first 2 min despite the difference in power output. The relationship between Vo2 and power output below 50 watts was obtained as a slope to estimate excessive Vo2 (ex-Vo2) above 50 watts. The slopes were 10.0+/-0.9 for DLE10, 9.9+/-0.7 for DLE20 and 10.2+/-1.0 ml.min(-1).watt(-1) for DLE30. The difference between Vo2 estimated from the slope and measured Vo2 was defined as ex-Vo2. The peak value of ex-Vo2 for DLE10 (189+/-116 ml.min(-1)) was significantly greater than those for DLE20 and for DLE30 (93+/-97 and 88+/-34 ml.min(-1)). The difference between Vo2 in DLE and that in incremental-load exercise (ILE) below 50 watts (DeltaVo2) was greater in DLE30 and smallest in DLE10. There were significant differences in DeltaVo2 among the three DLE tests. The values of DeltaVo2 at 30 watts were 283+/-152 for DLE10, 413+/-136 for DLE20 and 483+/-187 ml.min(-1) for DLE30. Thus, a faster rate of decrease in power output resulted in no change of Vo2 at the onset of DLE, smaller ex-Vo2 and greater DeltaVo2. These results suggest that Vo2 is disposed in parallel in each motor unit released from power output or recruited in DLE.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to clarify the acute effect of dynamic stretching exercise on muscular performance during concentric dynamic constant external resistance (DCER, formally called isotonic) muscle actions under various loads. Concentric DCER leg extension power outputs were measured in 12 healthy male students after 2 types of pretreatment. The pretreatments were: (a) dynamic stretching treatment including 2 types of dynamic stretching exercises of leg extensors and the other 2 types of dynamic stretching exercises simulating the leg extension motion (2 sets of 15 times each with 30-second rest periods between sets; total duration: about 8 minutes), and (b) nonstretching treatment by resting for 8 minutes in a sitting position. Loads during measurement of the power output were set to 5, 30, and 60% of the maximum voluntary contractile (MVC) torque with isometric leg extension in each subject. The power output after the dynamic stretching treatment was significantly (p < 0.05) greater than that after the nonstretching treatment under each load (5% MVC: 468.4 +/- 102.6 W vs. 430.1 +/- 73.0 W; 30% MVC: 520.4 +/- 108.5 W vs. 491.0 +/- 93.0 W; 60% MVC: 487.1 +/- 100.6 W vs. 450.8 +/- 83.7 W). The present study demonstrated that dynamic stretching routines, such as dynamic stretching exercise of target muscle groups and dynamic stretching exercise simulating the actual motion pattern, significantly improve power output with concentric DCER muscle actions under various loads. These results suggested that dynamic stretching routines in warm-up protocols enhance power performance because common power activities are carried out by DCER muscle actions under various loads.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on photosynthesis at constant water-vapor pressure in the air was investigated using two sclerophyll species, Arbutus unedo and Quercus suber, and one mesophytic species, Spinacia oleracea. Photosynthesis and transpiration were measured over a range of temperatures, 20–39° C. The external concentration of CO2 was varied from 340 bar to near CO2 compensation. The initial slope (carboxylation efficiency, CE) of the photosynthetic response to intercellular CO2 concentration, the CO2 compensation point (), and the extrapolated rate of CO2 released into CO2-free air (R i) were calculated. At an external CO2 concentration of 320–340 bar CO2, photosynthesis decreased with temperature in all species. The effect of temperature on was similar in all species. While CE in S. oleracea changed little with temperature, CE decreased by 50% in Q. suber as temperature increased from 25 to 34° C. Arbutus unedo also exhibited a decrease in CE at higher temperatures but not as marked as Q. suber. The absolut value of R i increased with temperature in S. oleracea, while changing little or decreasing in the sclerophylls. Variations in and R i of the sclerophyll species are not consistent with greater increase of respiration with temperature in the light in these species compared with S. oleracea.Abbreviations and symbols A net photosynthetic rate - C and C i CO2 concentration in the air and in the intercellular airspace of the leaf, respectively - CE carboxylation efficiency - E transpiration rate - R i CO2 release into CO2-free air estimated from extrapolation to 0 bar CO2 - T i leaf temerature - VPD difference in water-vapor pressure between mesophyll and air - CO2 compensation point  相似文献

The effects of external loading, in the form of small weights distributed evenly over the limbs and torso, on physical performance and power output have been studied during vertical jumping in 10 children and four young adults and the results compared with maximal cycling. The results show under control (unloaded) conditions the absolute peak power output (W) achieved by children and adults was 572 W (45%) and 765 W (25%) respectively higher in cycling than jumping. The addition of weights during jumping served only to increase this difference. External loading produced a linear decrease of W in both groups of subjects. The reduction in W was entirely due to a decrease of take-off velocity (VT). The relationship between VT and added weights (delta wt) could be described by the equations: VT (ms-1) = 1.91 - 0.042 delta wt (kg); r = -0.96 (children); VT (ms-1) = 2.49 - 0.021 delta wt (kg); r = -0.99 (adults). Thus, contrary to the recent work of Caiozzo and Kyle (1980) which involved stair-climbing, body size and speed of movement in children and young adults would appear to be optimally matched for the production of lifting work during vertical jumping. External loading reduces the generation of power output immediately prior to take-off of a maximal jump from a force platform.  相似文献

Two irrigation systems were used to compare nitrogen uptake efficiency in citrus trees and to evaluate the NO3 runoff in «Navelina» orange trees [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck] on Carrizo citrange rootstock (Citrus sinensis × Poncirus trifoliata Raf.). These were fertilized with 125 g N as labelled K15NO3 and grown outdoors in containers filled with a sand-loamy soil. Two groups of 3 trees received this N dose either in five equally split applications by a flooding irrigation system or in 66 applications by drip. Trees were harvested at the end of the vegetative cycle (December) and the isotopic ratios of 15N/14N were measured in the soil-plant system. The N uptake efficiency of the whole tree was higher with drip irrigation (75 percnt;) than with flooding system (64 percnt;). In the 0-90 cm soil profile, the N immobilized in the organic fraction was similar for both irrigation methods (around 13 percnt;), whereas the N retained as NO3 was 1 percnt; of the N applied under drip and 10 percnt; under flooding. In the last case, most of NO3 remained under root system and it could be lost to leaching either by heavy rainfalls or excessive water applications. These results showed that a drip irrigation system was more efficient for improving water use and N uptake from fertilizer, in addition to potentially reduced leaching losses.  相似文献

The optimal antenna of transmitters used in small aquatic animals is often a compromise between efficient radio wave propagation and effects on animal behavior. Radio transmission efficiency generally increases with diameter and length of the conductor, but increased antenna length or weight can adversely affect animal behavior. We evaluated the effects of changing antenna length and material on the subsequent tag output power, reception, and detection of tagged fish. In a laboratory, we compared the relative signal strengths in water of 150 MHz transmitters over a range of antenna lengths (from 6 to 30 cm) and materials (one weighing about half of the other). The peak relative signal strengths were at 20 and 22 cm, which are approximately one wavelength underwater at the test frequency. The peak relative signal strengths at these lengths were approximately 50% greater than those of 30 cm antennas, a length commonly used in fisheries research. Few significant differences were present in distances for the operator to hear or the telemetry receiver to decode transmitters from a boat-mounted receiving system based on antenna length, but the percent of tagged fish detected passing a hydroelectric dam fitted with an array of receiving systems was significantly greater at the antenna length with peak output power in laboratory tests. This study indicates careful choice of antenna length and material of small transmitters can be used to reduce weight and possible antenna effects on animal behavior, to maximize tag output power and detection, or to balance these factors based on the needs of the application.  相似文献

The effect of interrepetition rest (IRR) periods on power output during performance of multiple sets of power cleans is unknown. It is possible that IRR periods may attenuate the decrease in power output commonly observed within multiple sets. This may be of benefit for maximizing improvements in power with training. This investigation involved 10 college-aged men with proficiency in weightlifting. The subjects performed 3 sets of 6 repetitions of power cleans at 80% of their 1 repetition maximum with 0 (P0), 20 (P20), or 40 seconds (P40) of IRR. Each protocol (P0, P20, P40) was performed in a randomized order on different days each separated by at least 72 hours. The subjects performed the power cleans while standing on a force plate with 2 linear position transducers attached to the bar. Peak power, force, and velocity were obtained for each repetition and set. Peak power significantly decreased by 15.7% during P0 in comparison with a decrease of 5.5% (R1: 4,303 ± 567 W, R6: 4,055 ± 582 W) during P20 and a decrease of 3.3% (R1: 4,549 ± 659 W, R6: 4,363 ± 476 W) during P40. Peak force significantly decreased by 7.3% (R1: 2,861 ± 247 N, R6: 2,657 ± 225 N) during P0 in comparison with a decrease of 2.7% (R1: 2,811 ± 327 N, R6: 2,730 ± 285 N) during P20 and an increase of 0.4% (R1: 2,861 ± 323 N, R6: 2,862 ± 280 N) during P40. Peak velocity significantly decreased by 10.2% (R1: 1.97 ± 0.15 m·s(-1), R6: 1.79 ± 0.11 m·s(-1)) during P0 in comparison with a decrease of 3.8% (R1: 1.89 ± 0.13 m·s(-1), R6: 1.82 ± 0.12 m·s(-1)) during P20 and a decrease of 1.7% (R1: 1.93 ± 0.17 m·s(-1), R6: 1.89 ± 0.14 m·s(-1)) during P40. The results demonstrate that IRR periods allow for the maintenance of power in the power clean during a multiple set exercise protocol and that this may have implications for improved training adaptations.  相似文献
