Spatial and temporal patterns of redd construction by Sakhalin taimen, Hucho perryi , were studied in small streams on northern Hokkaido, Japan. Spawning took place in late April with close relation to discharge patterns. Observed redd size (mean ± 95% C.I.) was 145 ± 11·8 cm in length and 84 ± 5·8 cm in width. The number of egg pockets per redd was either one or two, which is fewer than that of other salmonids reported in the literature. Spawning ground distributions in 1991 and 1992 were similar to each other in terms of the distribution mean and dispersion of the redds. Unlike other salmonids Sakhalin taimen probably constructed multiple redds during one spawning season.  相似文献

Excavation of stranded redds revealed differences in spawning behaviour between farmed and wild Atlantic salmon. The redd of a farmed fish contained more egg pockets (nine v . average of two) and fewer eggs per pocket (averages: 459 v . 707). No other pocket measures differed.  相似文献

Based on results from simulated redds of coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch , the amount of fine sediment <0·5 mm in the lower half of the egg pocket, rather than the entire egg pocket of the redd, was a strong predictor of egg survival to hatching (  r 2  = 0·62). The relationship was much stronger than observed in other studies, which typically ignore egg pocket structure. Abundance of a fish egg-eating worm, Haplotaxis ichthyophagous , an oligochaete that may have been attracted to fine sediment and dead eggs in the egg pocket, was also associated with a decrease in egg survival. The worm, however, accounted for little of the variance in survival compared to fine sediment. Only 10% fine sediment (<0·5 mm) in the lower pocket was required to decrease survival from 100 to 5%. Other abiotic factors had weaker (gravel permeability) or non-existent (dissolved oxygen) correlations with survival.  相似文献

Redds of trout, Salmo trutta L., Atlantic salmon, S. salar L., and rainbow trout, S. gairdneri Richardson, were studied at sites in north-east England, south-west Wales and southern England (Dorset). Spawning females preferred gravels of 20–30 mm diameter and water velocities at 0·6 depth of 15 cm s-1 and < c. 2·0 body lengths s-1. After logarithmic transformation the major horizontal dimensions of redds could be related to one another by linear regressions, and redd tail length could, similarly, be related to female fish length. Egg burial depth in upland stony streams in north-east England and south-west Wales could be predicted from a linear regression of mean depth upon female length. Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, deposit their eggs in excavated depressions called nests. These nests are built from downstream to upstream within one or more redds, and each redd corresponds to a continuous area of the streambed disturbed by the female digging activities. Redd topographic measurements and egg excavation were performed to determine number of nests per redd and per female, nest depth, distances between successive nests, number of eggs deposited per nest, and egg survival in nests created by six grilse Atlantic salmon, five spawning in an experimental stream (Lapitxuri channel) and one in a natural stream (Lurgorrieta Creek, a tributary of the Nivelle River in southwest France). All females constructed a single redd, except one which built two redds in the channel. Redd surface area ranged between 2.3 and 5.7m2. Each redd had a raised mound of gravel or dome under which most of the eggs were located, and an upstream depression or pot. Based on expected egg-to-juvenile survival rates previously obtained in the Lapitxuri channel and on juvenile recoveries, between 96 and 97% of the eggs deposited in the channel sections were retrieved. Each female constructed 7 to 11 nests over a period of 3 to 5 days. The first three nests had an average burial depth of 12.9cm (±1.6SD) which was greater than the last three nests (mean 9.5cm±2.6SD). Eggs removed from the first three nests had higher fertility rates (95.5% vs. 87.2%), greater survival (83.5% vs. 63.1%) and lower occurrences of abnormalities (1.9% vs. 5.5%) than those deposited in the last three nests. Typically, the percentage of eggs deposited per female decreased from the first to the last nest, such that the last two to three nests possessed only a small number of scattered eggs. Similar results were observed in the redd located in Lurgorrieta Creek. The adaptive consequences of the topographic features of redds and the egg allocation patterns we found are discussed.  相似文献

This paper describes the gravel type and structure of brown trout spawning gravels in Teesdale, the flow characteristics of the spawning sites and the size of redds. Factors influencing redd size are investigated and it is concluded that female size is a major factor. Relationships are established between various redd characteristics and the fork length of female fish. The findings are discussed in relation to the existing literature concerning salmonid spawning sites.  相似文献

The objective was to predict interannual fluctuations in the size of sea-trout fry when they emerged from the redd, using models developed from field data for 70 excavated redds (≥three per year), and from experimental data on egg and alevin development at 30 constant temperatures in the laboratory (range 1·5—10·5) C with 100 naturally fertilized eggs at each temperature). Egg weight increased with female length and also with the number of eggs laid in a redd, both relationships being well described by a power function. Early spawners were the largest females laying the largest and most numerous eggs, whilst late spawners were the smallest females laying the smallest and least numerous eggs, with middle spawners being intermediate between these two extremes. Mean values for egg weight and number of eggs per redd were obtained for these three groups. The numbers of early, middle and late spawners for each year of a 30-year study and the mean values from the excavated redds were used to estimate weighted means for the number of eggs per unit area and egg weight. Mean values varied considerably between years (30-year ranges: 518–7964 eggs per 60 m2; 112–138 mg wet weight). In the laboratory, mean weights of newly hatched alevins and newly emerged fry were both related positively to mean egg weights. Alevin and fry mean weights were independent of the number of days required for 50% of the eggs to hatch or fry to emerge. Models described in a previous paper formed the basis of those used to predict fry weights over the emergence period. Model predictions were validated by field data for the whole emergence period in 8 years (1967–1971, 1974, 1975, 1980), and by pre-fry weights on single dates in 21 years (1967–1987). As pre-fry densities on these single dates were very similar to egg densities for the same year class, mortality in the egg and alevin stages was very low. The chief objective was therefore fulfilled, and the extent of interannual fluctuations for the 30-year study showed some variation in mean fry weight (30-year ranges: 153–193 mg for both the whole emergence period and the date on which 50% of fry emerged) but a progressive decrease in fry weight through the emergence period. Possible reasons for this variation are discussed, and it is concluded that the size of the female spawners is the dominant factor.  相似文献

The reproductive success of mature male Atlantic salmon parr ( Salmo salar ) under natural spawning conditions was estimated using the polymorphism at the MEP - 2 * locus as a genetic marker. The percentage of eggs per redd fertilized by parr varied considerably over the five redds examined (0·9–27.7%, mean 10·8%), but a gametic contribution from mature parr was detected in each case. Parr reproductive success has important implications for the population structure and evolution of the Atlantic salmon through its effect on gene flow.  相似文献

Reproductive success of female animals is often affected by a combination of fecundity and parental care. In female salmonid fishes, acquisition of nest (redd) sites and prevention of their use by other females are critical to reproductive success. These factors are particularly important for stocks that spawn at high densities. Body size is positively correlated with fecundity and egg size, and has been hypothesized to control the outcome of intrasexual competition and longevity. We tested this hypothesis by evaluating the influences of body size, intrasexual aggression and arrival date on duration and success of redd guarding by female sockeye salmon, Oncorhynchus nerka, in a small Alaskan creek. Contrary to the hypothesis, larger females guarded their redds no longer than smaller females, and did not live as long in the stream. Aggression was not related to body size or overall longevity but was positively correlated with residence period on the redd. Females that entered the creek earlier lived longer, spent longer on their redds, and spent more time guarding their redds after spawning than females that entered the creek later. However, despite their longevity, early-arriving fish were more likely to have their redds reused by another female because they died before all the females had selected redd sites. The small average body size in this stock is consistent with weak selection for large size, and with our evidence that size provided little if any advantage in nest guarding.  相似文献

Egg-to-fry development and survival of brown trout Salmo trutta were compared in two rivers of the Pyrenean piedmont, the Nive d'Arnéguy, with few human activities, and the Nive des Aldudes, with many anthropogenic activities including 11 fish farms and two sewage treatment plants (STPs). Survival was estimated between spawning (early December) and emergence time (early March) by means of capsules, 7 cm3 in volume, filled with green eggs then inserted into the gravel of artificial redds at spawning sites. In the Nive des Aldudes, three sets of conditions were studied: a fish farm near the springs, a fish farm and an STP in a village, and a series of fish farms and an STP in a village. In each situation, two artificial redds were created upstream and two others downstream from the fish farms. In the Nive d'Arnéguy, four sites were equipped: each of the two downstream sites with two artificial redds, and the two upstream sites with one redd. Substratum characteristics (proportion of fine particles) and the quality of surface and interstitial water (oxygen content, ammonia and nitrite nitrogen) were periodically measured. There was no redd substratum difference between sites upstream and downstream of fish farms. Survival to fry emergence was higher in the Nive d'Arnéguy (63·5%) than in the Nive des Aldudes (47·7%). In this latter river, the nitrogen released from the STPs was 0·5% that from fish farms. Fish farming impaired survival close to fish farm effluents (31·6%), as compared to survival upstream (63·6%), and induced a development delay during the yolk-sac fry stage. These differences were mainly linked to a drop in the dissolved oxygen content in interstitial water induced by the nitrogen flow in surface and interstitial waters.  相似文献

The relationship between fecundity and length for sea trout Salmo trutta from three streams in NW England was curvilinear and, after logarithmic transformation of both variables, was well described by a linear regression model. Regression equations for the fish from the three streams were not significantly different ( p >0.05). The relationship between estimated eggs per redd and female size in a tributary of one of the streams was also well described by a linear regression model after logarithmic transformation. Fecundity was usually higher than estimated eggs per redd, and this difference increased with female size so that the mean number of eggs per redd expressed as a percentage of mean fecundity decreased from 100% for a female with a length of 240 mm to 79% for one of 650 mm. The power function in its logarithmic form has now been fitted to fecundity-length data for sea trout from 12 streams and rivers in England, Scotland, Ireland and Norway. Comparisons between fecundity estimates for the same sizes of females revealed a large variation between populations and possible reasons for this are discussed.  相似文献

The life history, population and reproductive variables of the southern red tabira bitterling Acheilognathus tabira jordani were investigated in a lowland reach of the River Ohara in Shimane Prefecture, western Honshu, Japan. Acheilognathus t. jordani , like all other species of bitterling, lays its eggs on the gills of freshwater mussels. It was the only species of bitterling present in the study reach, and three species of bivalve mussel were available to it for spawning: Anemina arcaeformis, Anodonta lauta and Corbicula leana . Spawning by A.t. jordani was recorded between early April and early July in 2003 and began at a size of 38· 0 mm standard length ( L S) in the 1+ age class. Ovipositor length ( L OP) during oviposition was positively correlated with female L S, and showed significant seasonal variation, with a mean ± s.d. L OP of 27· 5 ± 5· 3 mm ranging from 16· 8 to 42· 0 mm during the spawning period, which was shorter than that of a previously studied A. t. tabira population. Eggs of this subspecies are relatively long and elliptic in shape, with a volume of c. 2· 4 mm3. Egg number correlated positively with female L S and both egg shape and volume changed significantly with season. The population size of adults was estimated to be 850 individuals, and comprised age 0+ to 3+ individuals with L S ranging from 12· 0 to 72· 2 mm. The population sex ratio was significantly female biased, with seven females: three males. Egg shape and size and L OP during oviposition in the present A. tabira population may be the result of local adaptations to the mussel species utilized and no competition with other bitterling species for spawning sites.  相似文献

Synopsis Paired males of the dark chub, Zacco temmincki, buried released eggs by vibrating their anal fin, but this behavior was prevented and eggs were cannibalized when many satellites (males and females) were present. A number of satellite males also caused a loss to paired males in sperm competition on spawning grounds far from shelters. Paired males followed repeating tactics, which were defined as successive spawning acts at the same redd, in most cases, but occasionally did shifting tactics which refer to spawning acts conducted successively at different redds. The proportion of the shifting tactic was not correlated with the dominance status of paired males. The shifting tactic was not advantageous in performing spawnings frequently. The calculation of the total advantage of both tactics indicated that the shifting tactic itself was not more beneficial than the repeating tactic at any density of satellites. Since a number of satellites stayed around the redd when no spawning pair was present, or pursued a pair or a single dominant male moving between spawning grounds, the occasional shifting tactics of paired males functioned to confuse and disperse satellites. The spawning tactics of paired males apparently reflected potential fitness costs of satellites. Paired males mainly spawned at the redds near shelters, despite the fact that more satellites were present to devour eggs, presumably because they could obtain many females and monopolize fertilizations.  相似文献

Mean values for egg weight and numbers of eggs per redd were obtained for these three groups. Hatching and emergence times in the laboratory decreased with increasing temperature. Of five models tested for hatching time, the best fit was provided by a three-parameter hyperbolic model which formed the asis of the individual-based model used to predict egg hatching and fry emergence. Model development was described in detail and the final equations predicted the times taken for 5, 50 and 95% of the fry to emerge, and hence the period over which 90% of the fry emerged. Analogous models were obtained for egg hatching. All models were excellent fits to the laboratory data. Hatching times for eggs kept in perforated boxes in the stream were almost identical to those kept at similar mean temperatures in the laboratory. Model predictions of fry emergence times were validated by field data for 8 years (1967–1971, 1974, 1975, 1980). The chief objective was therefore fulfilled, and predictions for the 30-year study (1967–1996) revealed a large variation in the timing of emergence (extremes: 11 March–4 April 1989, 15–20 May 1979). Most of the variation in median emergence date was due to variations in water temperature, with spawning dates as a secondary factor; the latter, however, had a greater effect on the length of the emergence period.  相似文献

The eggs of some obligate brood parasites are more spherical than the eggs of their non‐parasitic relatives and hosts, which contributes to the increased strength of their shells. We examined whether egg shape, including the more spherical shape of brown‐headed cowbird eggs (Molothrus ater), influenced egg discrimination in American robins (Turdus migratorius) and gray catbirds (Dumetella carolinensis). We added a series of artificial objects to robin and catbird nests that varied in shape from a control host egg, a rounded, cowbird‐like egg, to odd‐shaped objects. Real cowbird eggs were significantly more spherical than catbird and robin eggs, which confirmed a potential cue for egg recognition. Object shape significantly influenced the probability of rejection and time to rejection in both robins and catbirds. However, rounded eggs and spheres were rejected infrequently and at frequencies similar to control eggs. Therefore, the shape of a brood parasite's egg does not appear to influence egg discrimination in these two rejecters. Robins and catbirds rejected significantly more odd‐shaped objects than egg‐shaped objects and odd‐shaped objects were rejected significantly sooner than egg‐shaped objects. The rejection of odd‐shaped objects likely represents an expression of nest‐sanitation behaviour where debris is removed from the nest. By comparison with other studies of accepters of cowbird eggs, robins and catbirds appear to reject higher proportions of odd‐shaped objects, which suggests they may have more refined abilities to discriminate against foreign objects in their nests.  相似文献

1. Unlike a neighbouring sea-trout population that showed strong density-dependent survival, a resident trout population ( Salmo trutta L.) showed simple proportionate survival in the early life-stages. However, this persistent population fluctuated within narrow limits. Mature adults, especially during spawning, were the only possible life-stage left in which regulation might occur. 2. An October census, just prior to spawning, was made at five sites (total area 300 m 2 ) from 1965 to 1983. Gravel nests (redds) associated with females of known size were excavated outside these sites to obtain a power-function relationship between egg density per redd and female length (range 181–280 mm, n = 26). This relationship and the census data for females (range 186–284 mm) were used to estimate egg densities in each year-class. 3. The census data for the early life-stages (0+, 1+, 2+ trout) confirmed proportionate survival with no evidence for density-dependent regulation. In contrast, the number of spawning females produced in each year-class was strongly density dependent on the initial number of females that laid eggs at the start of the year-class. Similarly, total egg production in each year-class was density dependent on initial egg density. 4 Both relationships were well described by the Ricker and Beverton-Holt stock-recruitment models (P < 0.001) and the goodness-of-fit was similar for both models. This study is probably the first to provide clear evidence for fish population regulation in the adult, rather than the juvenile, stage.  相似文献

Healthy and Contortylenchus reversus infected Douglas Fir beetles were colonized in logs in the laboratory. At 7, 14, and 23 days after introduction of the beetles into the logs, the bark was removed from some of the logs and the length and shape of the primary gallery, the number of eggs laid, and the egg viability were determined for each pair of parent beetles. Parasitism caused a 25, 28, and 27% reduction in the length of the primary egg gallery built by the infected female at 7, 14, and 23 days, respectively, after the start of colonization. In addition, the number of eggs laid by the infected females by 7, 14, and 23 days after the start of colonization were 50, 33, and 45%, respectively, lower than that of healthy female beetles. Despite the differences in gallery length between control and infected females, linear regression analysis showed that the rates of gallery construction were not significantly different. However, infected female beetles showed significantly lower rates of egg-laying than did healthy female beetles. Nematode parasitism did not affect gallery shape and egg viability of female Douglas Fir beetles. Mating of healthy female beetles with infected males affected neither the gallery length nor the fecundity of the uninfected females.  相似文献

SUMMARY. The annual cycle of intraovarian egg size in 124 mature barbel caught during a 3-year period was investigated. Storage methods, subsampling and measuring procedures were assessed and found to be reliable. Estimates of fecundity were made on thirty-two barbel containing developing ripening eggs. A new egg separation and counting technique was used modified from the volumetric ratio method described by Bagenal & Braum (1968). Fecundity estimates were found to be accurate by comparison with manual counts. Barbel ovaries contained two egg groups throughout the year. A third large, ripening egg group developed prior to spawning. The diameter of the ripening eggs, measured in arbitrary optical units, was significantly correlated with fork length. Large fish spawned bigger eggs than small fish. Fecundity was logarithmically related to fork length and ovary weight and linearly related to somatic weight. The mean diameter of the ripening intraovarian egg group was also logarithmically related to ovary weight. Heavier ovaries contained proportionally fewer, but larger, ripening eggs than small ovaries.  相似文献

The reproductive behavior and genital morphology of a leptophlebiid mayfly Paraleptophlebia spinosa Ueno were studied in a population inhabiting a mountain stream in Kyoto, central Japan. Males formed swarms along gravel shores, caught females in the air, and mated on the ground. The distribution of the oviposition sites coincided with that of the swarming sites along the stream shore. The lobes of the male penis were characterized by a shallow pocket opening on the ventral side. The female vestibule formed a square-shaped chamber into which eggs were released from the oviducts. The number of eggs carried by females caught during copulation in the field showed a greater variation than the number of eggs of virgin females. Copula duration was strongly correlated with the number of eggs carried by the female. Significantly short copula duration with spent females (egg loading less than 20% of the estimated fecundity) may indicate that males could identify spent females. Copula duration with partially loaded females (egg loading between 20% and 80% of fecundity), however, was not shorter than that with fully loaded females. Male mating tactics with respect to copula duration and the possibility of kinematic sperm displacement are discussed with reference to the behavioral and morphological characteristics of the species. Summary Mature male parr successfully fertilized eggs of anadromous female Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, in competition with anadromous males under simulated natural conditions. Mating situations were created in which mature male parr and anadromous males competing for the opportunity to spawn with an anadromous female differed in allelic forms of the same enzyme. Females deposited eggs into a sequence of 3 or 4 eggs nests. The mean proportion of eggs in a redd fertilized by parr increased with increasing numbers of parr present at a redd, reaching 23% at male parr: anadromous male ratios of 20:1. Single male parr fertilized, on average, 5% of the eggs in a redd. The proportion of eggs in an egg nest fertilized by parr also depended upon the order of egg nest construction, such that parr mating success was highest at the initial nest constructed and lowest at the final nest. Parr have relatively high fertilization success for their size when compared with the smaller maturation phenotype of other salmonids.  相似文献
