A trade-off between diapause duration and fitness in female parasitoids   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Abstract 1. Diapause allows insects to cope with adverse weather conditions but also poses substantial fitness costs, e.g. through reduced survival of the diapausing stage or sublethal effects in the following season.
2. The energetic costs of diapause in females of the parasitoid Asobara tabida Nees (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) were assessed using experimental manipulation of diapause duration.
3. An increase in diapause length not only led to higher mortality among diapausing pupae but also caused a significant decrease in egg load, fat reserves, and dry weight of the emerging adult females.
4. Only larvae with sufficient resources were able to survive the entire diapause period and there was a trade-off between the metabolic costs of diapause and adult fitness components.
5. In contrast, the size (tibia length) of emerging females increased with increasing diapause duration. It is proposed that this may be due to a genetic correlation between larval dry weight and adult size, so that selection for heavier larvae would result in larger adults even when resources are limited.
6. Ultimately, the evolution of diapause duration and its consequences for adult performance will depend on the costs of overwintering and the ecological conditions in the habitat.  相似文献

1. Seasonality is a prime selective factor promoting genetic differentiation of populations. Local adaptation in diapause response was investigated in the two geographically and altitudinally widespread dung flies Scathophaga stercoraria (Diptera: Scathophagidae) and Sepsis cynipsea (Diptera: Sepsidae).
2. Replicate sibships from three sites in Switzerland with low and high altitude dung fly populations were raised in a common laboratory environment simulating the natural decreasing photoperiod and temperature regimen before winter. From field phenologies, the critical photoperiod inducing diapause was predicted to be longer for high than for low altitude populations (12 vs. 10 h for Sc. stercoraria , and 12.25 vs. 11 h for Se. cynipsea ) if they are locally adapted.
3. Contrary to expectation and to Sc. stercoraria , which diapauses in the pupal stage, Se. cynipsea diapauses in the adult stage.
4. Low but significant levels of genetic differentiation in pre-winter adult emergence were evident between low and high altitude populations of both species, but they were far from the differences predicted. Scathophaga stercoraria also showed geographical differentiation independent of altitude.
5. Sepsis cynipsea females stopped reproducing at some point before winter, but altitude did not affect the timing of adult diapause. High altitude females and females that did not initiate reproduction before winter survived the simulated winter better.
6. Both species largely used temperature rather than photoperiod as a cue inducing winter diapause, an untypical case of phenotypic plasticity. The hypothesis that Sc. stercoraria , whose generation times are much longer than those of Se. cynipsea , responds to a greater extent to temperature rather than photoperiod only was rejected.  相似文献

Abstract To understand the adaptive strategies of the overwintering adults of Stenocatantops splendens, the mechanism of maintenance and termination of the reproductive diapause, the variation in mortality between overwintering females and males, and the mating strategy of the males were investigated. The results indicated that the adult reproductive diapause in natural conditions was mainly regulated by photoperiod in the fall – long photoperiods promoted reproductive development and short photoperiods maintained reproductive diapause, and the sensitivity of the overwintering adults to photoperiod was over before the end of the winter. When transferred from natural conditions to controlled laboratory conditions on dates from September through February, pre‐oviposition became increasingly shorter with increasingly deferred transfer dates regardless of photoperiod conditions. The adults treated with low temperature for 30 days in September through November had significantly shorter pre‐oviposition, suggesting that low temperatures in winter had an important role in the termination of reproductive diapause. The female had a significantly lower supercooling point than the male, which was related to their lower mortality after winter. In addition, observations of wild populations of the species indicated that mating behavior prior to winter and the duration of pre‐mating period were not affected by photoperiod; mating and sperm transfer were mostly completed by November. Compared with females only mating before winter, females mating in the spring had shorter life span, longer pre‐oviposition, lower hatching rate and laid fewer egg pods while showing no significant difference with regard to ovipositional interval, per pod number of eggs and nymph dry weight.  相似文献

1. It has recently been suggested that expected increases in temperature might lead to an additional generation per season in bark beetles. Thus, populations would grow more rapidly. However, an additional but not fully developed generation could lead to high winter mortality in the pre‐imaginal stages. 2. Winter survivability and post‐diapause fitness as a function of the overwintering developmental stage of the spruce bark beetle Ips typographus L. were studied along an altitudinal cline. Fitness was tested in terms of weight, lipid content and flight capacity. 3. Mortality was significantly lower and emergence per brood system significantly higher for fully developed adults that entered overwintering than for larvae, pupae or callow adults. 4. Post‐diapause fitness in terms of dry weight and flight capacity was significantly higher in individuals that completed development before winter, and lipid contents also showed a trend for being higher in those individuals. 5. In conclusion, in a scenario where effective temperature sums are not adequate for the complete development of an additional generation, models may overestimate population growth by neglecting increased mortality and reduced post‐diapause fitness. The results highlight the importance of considering life‐history traits and indirect effects in addition to abiotic factors such as temperature when modelling population dynamics.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that mild winter temperatures are detrimental to the survival and reproductive potential of insects. We measured survival, body size, and potential fecundity of a freeze tolerant insect, the goldenrod gall fly (Eurosta solidaginis), after overwintering in the laboratory for ~3 mo. frozen at -22 degrees C, unfrozen at 0 degrees C, or unfrozen at 12 degrees C. Larvae held at 12 degrees C suffered high mortality (70%) and relatively low potential fecundity as adults (mean+/-SEM=199+/-11 eggs/female), while those held at 0 degrees C had both low mortality (11%) and high potential fecundity (256+/-15 eggs/female). Freezing (-22 degrees C) increased mortality (30% overall) but did not significantly reduce fecundity (245+/-13 eggs/female). Egg length and width were constant regardless of treatment group or female body size. Analysis of covariance indicated that reduced fecundity in the 12 degrees C group was related to reduced larval body weight following treatment. Patterns of larval weight loss in the experimental treatments were generally correlated with previous reports of latitudinal trends in weight loss through the winter. We conclude that mild winter temperatures may be detrimental to some overwintering insects, particularly species that do not feed following winter diapause. Low temperature and even freezing are beneficial, allowing conservation of energy reserves to maintain high survival and potential fecundity.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The life cycle of Argia vivida Hagen generally took longer to complete in the field than was predicted on the basis of the thermal sum accumulated in laboratory rearing.
2. The prediction of a bivoltine life-cycle from geothermal sites with either a constant annual temperature of 26°C or thermal range of 11–31°C was not borne out because the intervention of short-day induced developmental delays in later larval instars extended the life cycle to 1 year.
3. This diapause, which synchronizes adult emergence with favourable summer temperatures, was also present in larvae from sites with annual temperature ranges of 0–33°C and 5–20°C.
4. At these colder sites completion of the life cycle takes 2 and 3 years respectively and dragonflies must be in cold-resistant stages during the winter. A long-day diapause, principally affecting late-instar larvae below a certain size during the summer, achieves this.
5. Large diurnal temperature fluctuations at the 0–33°C site markedly increase the useful thermal energy available to larvae for growth over that predicted by the thermal sum equation.
6. The interaction between the effects of temperatures favourable for growth and day-length-governed diapause, synchronize the emergence of the low-temperature sensitive adult stage of this tropical dragonfly with northern-latitude summers at a variety of habitats.  相似文献

To elucidate the relationship between diapause and cold hardiness in the oriental corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis, the levels of various substances, cold hardiness and respiration were measured in diapausing and post-diapausing overwintering larvae. Under field conditions, diapause terminated between November and January, although O(2) consumption, measured at 20 degrees C in the laboratory, remained at a high level from October to January. Glycerol content was low during October and November but greatly increased during December and January. Serine was the most abundant of the free amino acids, and its concentrations were especially high during October and November, while the concentration of alanine increased in December and January. Under laboratory conditions, glycerol levels were low in diapausing larvae, and in post-diapausing larvae that were acclimated at either high temperatures or under anaerobic conditions, while they were high in post-diapausing larvae kept under aerobic, low temperature conditions. The survival rate (cold hardiness) was strongly correlated with glycerol content but not with serine or alanine levels. These results suggest that O. furnacalis has a highly developed cold hardiness mechanism in which termination of diapause enables the larvae to increase glycerol levels when the temperature decreases.  相似文献

Amounts of several metabolites were measured in overwintering larvae of Enosima leucotaeniella acclimated to temperatures between -5 and 15 degrees C for 30days. In the diapausing stage, cold hardiness, as shown by the survival rate, began rising below 15 degrees C. Glycogen content decreased as the temperature decreased from 10 to 0 degrees C. Trehalose content rose as the temperature decreased from 15 to 5 degrees C, but remained unchanged as the temperature decreased from 5 and 0 degrees C. Twenty-eight free amino acids were detected in the haemolymph; levels of proline, glutamine and glutamic acid increased at high temperatures, but alanine increased at low temperatures, especially as temperature decreased from 5 to 0 degrees C. Lipid content was unchanged by the different acclimation temperatures. The effects of temperature, diapause and aerobic conditions on the levels of carbohydrates and amino acids in overwintering larvae were analyzed. Alanine levels rose at low temperature only when the larvae were in the diapausing stage. The level of trehalose rose at low temperature in both the diapausing and post-diapausing stages, although it was higher at aerobic conditions in the post-diapausing stage. These results suggest that efficient trehalose synthesis occurs under the combination of low temperature and aerobic conditions of the post-diapausing stage, so that cold hardiness in overwintering E. leucotaeniella larvae may rise to a high level in winter.  相似文献

Douglas fir seeds infested by diapausing larvae of a chalcid, Megastigmus spermotrophus, were transferred under different temperature and photoperiod regimes at various dates during autumn and winter. Both winter diapause and prolonged diapause were compared to the diapause patterns observed in control lots kept under natural conditions. The results showed that exposure to low temperatures in autumn and winter is required for the completion of diapause development. Median adult emergence dates and the date of transfer of larvae to 20°C were negatively correlated. The frequency of prolonged diapause of larvae transferred to 20°C decreased significantly after November. When larvae were submitted to different constant temperatures, the longer the daylength, the higher and faster the reactivation. These results suggest that chalcid larvae can perceive daylength through the seed coat. This phenomenon is probably related to the fact that most of the infested seeds falling in autumn are usually covered by a layer of leaf litter during the winter. The influence of environmental factors on the duration of diapause was evaluated in larvae of Ephestia elutella (Hübner) reared in short photo-periods at 25C or below. Termination of diapause was hastened by long photoperiods, high temperatures, long periods at low temperature, or exposure to fumigants. Diapause terminated rapidly under long photoperiods at 30 or 25C, but not at 20C. The critical photoperiod for the termination of diapause was similar to that for induction, lying between 13 and 16 h at 25C. The longest duration of diapause occurred in constant darkness (DD) at 20C. However, batches of larvae reared at 20C in DD pupated a little sooner than batches reared under LD, if both were transferred at the start of diapause to warm, long-day conditions. Long exposure to low temperature reduced the number of long photoperiods necessary for the rapid termination of diapause at high temperature. Samples of larvae brought to the laboratory at monthly intervals from an unheated outbuilding in which they were overwintering, required an average of c. 200 days to pupate in DD at 25C when transferred in December, compared with only 32 days when transferred in February or March. By comparison, batches transferred to LD 16:8 at 25C required 39 days when transferred in December and 20–24 days in February and March. Holding at low temperature for long periods also encouraged synchronous emergence of the sexes. Duration of diapause was generally shorter in a laboratory stock than in a stock collected from the field.  相似文献

The rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis, enters facultative diapause as fully grown larvae in response to short-day conditions during the autumn. Our results showed that the critical night length for diapause induction in C. suppressalis was between 10 h 22 min and 10 h 45 min at 22, 25 and 28 °C, 11 h 18 min at 31 °C, and between 10 h 5 min and 10 h 20 min under field conditions (average temperature ranged from 27.2 to 30.7 °C). The diapause incidence declined in ultra-long nights (18-22 h scotophases) and DD, and increased in ultra-short nights (2-6 h scotophases) and LL. Moreover, we found that the third instar was the stage most sensitive to the photoperiod, and night length played an essential role in the initiation of diapause. Night-interruption experiments with a 1-h light pulse at LD 12:12 (light 12:dark 12) exhibited two troughs of diapause inhibition, with one occurring in early scotophase and the other in late scotophase. Field observations for six years showed that most larvae entered winter diapause in August in response to declining day lengths, despite the high temperatures prevailing during August. By periodically transferring the field-collected overwintering larvae to different photoperiods and temperatures, the results showed that photoperiod had a significant influence on diapause development during the early phase of diapause, while high temperature significantly accelerated the termination of larval diapause.  相似文献

The rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis, is divided into at least two ecotypes in Japan, the Shonai ecotype (SN) which is distributed in the northern part of Japan, and the Saigoku ecotype (SG) which is distributed in the southwestern region. Cold hardiness is positively correlated with the level of glycerol in both ecotypes. To investigate whether ecological distribution affects glycerol accumulation and cold hardiness development in these two ecotypes, overwintering larvae of the SN and SG ecotypes were concurrently exposed to the Shonai district. Obvious differences in the progress of glycerol accumulation and cold hardiness development in SN and SG larvae were found in early winter in the Shonai district. The levels of glycerol content and cold hardiness were low in October and high in January in both ecotypes, but those levels were different within this period (November and December) between ecotypes; the levels in SN larvae quickly reached their maximum, whereas, in SG larvae levels increased slowly. Under controlled conditions, the effect of the period of acclimation at 10 degrees C and subsequent low-temperature (5 degrees C) exposure on glycerol accumulation was investigated. These results indicated that glycerol accumulation in SN was stimulated by the progression of diapause termination, whereas a higher cumulative effect on glycerol production in SG was found when diapause was in a deep state.  相似文献

The mortality of larvae and pupae of the blowfly Lucilia sericata (Meigen) were examined during winter and spring, for two or three years. In soil cores in the field, 70-95% of the larvae died overwinter. Larvae congregated in the top 10 cm of the soil core and did not move extensively throughout the column during the winter. Larvae and pupae at greater depth were less likely to pupariate and emerge successfully than larvae closer to the surface. Under semi-natural conditions, where pupae were placed outside in sawdust filled tubes, in the absence of the usual biotic mortality factors, the mortality of larvae was considerably lower and was also unaffected by low winter temperatures. Hence, low temperatures did not appear to be the primary cause of high overwintering mortality in the field which, it is suggested, is more likely to be the result of the action of biotic mortality factors, such as entomopathogenic nematodes and fungi.  相似文献

The chestnut weevil Curculio sikkimensis undergoes a prolonged larval diapause that is completed by repeated exposure to chilling and warming. We examined the possible reversibility of diapause intensity in response to temperature changes. All larvae were subjected to an initial chilling followed by incubation at 20°C to force pupation of the 1-year-type larvae that require only one winter for diapause completion. We then exposed the larvae remaining in prolonged diapause to a second chilling at 5°C for different lengths of time, preceded or not preceded by incubation at 20°C (moderately high) and/or 25°C (high) and followed by a final post-chilling reincubation at 20°C. Many of the prolonged-diapausing larvae subjected only to a brief second chilling were re-activated upon reincubation. However, short exposure to 25°C before this second chilling dramatically decreased the percentage of larvae completing diapause. When larvae were exposed to 25°C for a short period, then incubated at 20°C and subjected to the brief second chilling, many were re-activated during reincubation. The chilling time required for most of the larvae to complete diapause decreased after pre-chilling incubation at 20°C and increased after incubation at 25°C. These results demonstrate that diapause intensity in C. sikkimensis changes reversibly in response to changes in ambient temperature.  相似文献

Background

The codling moth (Cydia pomonella) is a major insect pest of apples worldwide. Fully grown last instar larvae overwinter in diapause state. Their overwintering strategies and physiological principles of cold tolerance have been insufficiently studied. No elaborate analysis of overwintering physiology is available for European populations.

Principal Findings

We observed that codling moth larvae of a Central European population prefer to overwinter in the microhabitat of litter layer near the base of trees. Reliance on extensive supercooling, or freeze-avoidance, appears as their major strategy for survival of the winter cold. The supercooling point decreases from approximately −15.3°C during summer to −26.3°C during winter. Seasonal extension of supercooling capacity is assisted by partial dehydration, increasing osmolality of body fluids, and the accumulation of a complex mixture of winter specific metabolites. Glycogen and glutamine reserves are depleted, while fructose, alanine and some other sugars, polyols and free amino acids are accumulated during winter. The concentrations of trehalose and proline remain high and relatively constant throughout the season, and may contribute to the stabilization of proteins and membranes at subzero temperatures. In addition to supercooling, overwintering larvae acquire considerable capacity to survive at subzero temperatures, down to −15°C, even in partially frozen state.

Conclusion

Our detailed laboratory analysis of cold tolerance, and whole-winter survival assays in semi-natural conditions, suggest that the average winter cold does not represent a major threat for codling moth populations. More than 83% of larvae survived over winter in the field and pupated in spring irrespective of the overwintering microhabitat (cold-exposed tree trunk or temperature-buffered litter layer).  相似文献

Larvae of the bean blister beetle, Epicauta gorhami (Coleoptera: Meloidae), feed on grasshopper eggs in soil and undergo hypermetamorphosis. This beetle undergoes larval diapause in the fifth instar as a pseudopupa, a form characteristic of hypermetamorphosis in meloid beetles. This pseudopupal diapause is maintained for a long period if the larvae are kept under continuous diapause-inducing short-day conditions. In the present study, the effects of temperature and photoperiod on termination of pseudopupal diapause in E. gorhami were examined using pseudopupae obtained under 12L-12D at 25°C. Diapause was terminated by exposure to low or high temperature, but not by transfer to long-day conditions. The pseudopupal stage comprises diapause and post-diapause phases despite its unchanging appearance. The optimum low temperature for diapause termination was 10-15°C, and a higher or lower temperature was less effective. There was an individual variation in the low temperature requirement for diapause termination and post-diapause development may not occur until this requirement is satisfied. Although under natural conditions pseudopupae may encounter low temperatures that are effective for diapause termination at different ages, our results show that pseudopupae at various ages respond similarly to low temperature exposure. This response may ensure that resumption of development synchronizes in a population.  相似文献

Abstract.  Understanding the effects of low winter temperatures on mortality is essential in the development of a full understanding of the long-term population dynamics of any insect. The present study aims to examine the survival of pupae and larvae of the blow fly, Lucilia sericata , at overwintering temperatures. Groups of pupae and diapausing and nondiapausing third-stage larvae of L. sericata are maintained in cooled incubators at either 3 °C and 6 °C. Groups are removed from the incubators at 3–4-day intervals and transferred either to−8 °C or to 25 °C. After 1 h in the freezer, the larvae and pupae exposed to this cold-shock are also transferred to 25 °C. Larvae and pupae are then allowed to continue development and the number of adults emerging from each group is counted. The results demonstrate that survival decreases linearly with the period of exposure at both 3 °C and 6 °C. Mortality is higher at 3 °C than at 6 °C and, in groups that receive the cold shock, cold-shock reduces emergence by over 50%. However, there is no consistent tendency for diapausing larvae to survive prolonged cold or cold shock better than other life-cycle stages. The results suggest that the facultative development of an overwintering diapause stage in L. sericata does not appear to be an adaptation to enhance cold tolerance or resistance to cold shock. It is concluded that the survival of overwintering L. sericata is likely to be relatively less affected by low temperatures than it is by, for example, biotic factors, particularly given the buffered soil environment and short time-scales over which periods of cold act.  相似文献

We examined the winter survival of age-0 smallmouth bass,Micropterus dolomieu, in lakes at their northern limit of distribution in New Brunswick, Canada. Pre- and post-winter collections over a 3 year period suggested the smallest individuals, <50 mm total length, died during winter under ice. Experiments with wild, age-0 smallmouth bass held in lakes demonstrated a size-dependent survival where smaller individuals had greater survival with an increasing temperature of exposure, but the largest individuals had reduced survival at warmer temperatures. Survivors lost 22–54% of pre-winter energy reserves measured as ash-free dry weight, which was similar to wild individuals captured in spring. Body size at the onset of winter affects survival, but it also appears that temperature interacting with a suite of environmental and biological factors affect changes in energy use and therefore survival of age-0 smallmouth bass under ice in winter.  相似文献

The effect of anoxia on diapause development in the leaf beetle Atrachya menetriesi was investigated to elucidate the role of oxygen in regulation of egg diapause. While anoxia alone had no effect on diapause termination, it decreased diapause intensity before chilling. Such an effect reached a maximum level when anoxia lasted for about 10 days. Anoxia applied during the pre-diapause stage also reduced diapause intensity. On the other hand, anoxia terminated diapause when the diapause intensity had been lowered by sufficient duration of chilling (50 days at 7.5 degrees C). The effect of anoxia was temperature dependent; the larger effect was elicited when anoxia was combined with a higher temperature. A 50-day chilling caused more than 20% of eggs to terminate diapause upon transfer to warm conditions. However, when this chilling period was interrupted on the 20th day by a 5-day exposure to a high temperature of 20, 25 or 30 degrees C, the effect of the former chilling was cancelled partially or completely, suggesting that warming reversed diapause development. This reversing effect of a high temperature, however, was not manifested when the warming was combined with anoxia. The results suggest that anoxia inhibits diapause reversal and facilitates a certain process of diapause development. The sequence of exposure to anoxia and chilling is not important.  相似文献

We sought evidence for a distinct diapause in adult overwintering mountain pine beetles (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins) by measuring metabolic rate and supercooling ability of field collected beetles throughout the year. Metabolic rates measured at 0, 5, and 10°C declined significantly from October through November, then rose slowly, reaching levels as high as those recorded in October by late May. From December to February metabolic rates were not correlated with minimum weekly phloem temperatures (R(2)=0.0%, P=0.592), but were correlated with phloem temperatures as winter advanced to spring (R(2)=44.8%, P=0.010), a pattern consistent with progression through the maintenance and termination phases of diapause. Supercooling points were also significantly lower in winter compared to fall and spring (F((8,143))=32.6, P<0.001) and were closely correlated with metabolic rates (R(2)>79% for all three temperatures). Dry mass declined linearly with winter progression (F((8,150))=8.34, P<0.001), explained by catabolism of metabolic reserves, with a concomitant accumulation of metabolic water (F((8,147))=35.24, P<0.001). The strong mid-winter metabolic suppression correlated with improved supercooling ability, coupled with their lack of response to variation in environmental temperature, are evidence of possible diapause in adult overwintering mountain pine beetles.  相似文献
