The rock-dwelling cichlids, or mbuna, of Lake Malawi are exceptionally diverse. Explanations of this diversity have used limited dispersal by the mbuna as the basis for allopatric models of speciation. However, there have been no studies that have attempted to define the extent and rates of dispersal of mbuna populations in the field. The present work took advantage of some translocations in which several species of mbuna were introduced to the Cape Maclear region of Lake Malawi from elsewhere in the lake. A detailed series of transects involving observations at four depths was undertaken at Thumbi West Island to define the distribution of the introduced species. There are large differences between species in the extent to which they have spread. Some species are now present all round the island while others have dispersed only a limited distance from the site of the initial introductions. This survey provides the first comprehensive data set on the distribution of the introduced species and it raises a number of important questions regarding their dispersal ability and their likely impact on the endemic community.  相似文献

Rapidly evolving systems offer the chance to observe genetic and phenotypic change in real time. We exploit a well-characterized introduction of cichlid fish into Lake Malawi National Park to document a short history of habitat colonization and the evolution of genes and colour pattern. In the early 1960s, a fish exporter introduced individuals of Cynotilapia afra to a single site (Mitande Point) of Thumbi West Island and, as late as 1983, the species was confined to this location. In 2001, C. afra had colonized the entire perimeter of Thumbi West. In July of that year, we sampled C. afra individuals from six sites around the island and scored variation in dorsal fin colour as well as allelic diversity at six microsatellite loci. We found that, in two decades, C. afra had diverged into genetically distinct, phenotypically different northern and southern populations. We observed a high proportion of hybrids between the introduced C. afra and the native Metriaclima zebra on the southern coast of Thumbi West, and speculate that hybridization is facilitated by low water clarity at these windward sites. The short history of C. afra at Thumbi West is a microcosm of contemporary evolutionary divergence and may provide the opportunity to study the process from start to finish in genetic detail.  相似文献

Patterns of distribution and abundance of coral reef fish depend in part on recruitment of a pelagic larval stage, on subsequent dispersal among habitats, and survival of new recruits. We studied recruitment of five species of Stegastes and two species of Chromis damselfish onto reef habitats of St. Thomas, USVI during one year. The two study sites, Flat Cay and Outer Brass Island, were on the southern and northern sides of St. Thomas, respectively. At both sites, recruitment occurred largely in the summer months, although one species (Stegastes planifrons) showed significant winter recruitment at Flat Cay. The onset of increased summer recruitment in 1992 of other species occurred several weeks later and was shorter in duration at Outer Brass Island than at Flat Cay, perhaps indicating differences in oceanographic conditions (currents etc.) or spawning cycles between sites. The two Chromis species showed lunar periodicity of settlement at Flat Cay. At Flat Cay, recruits of three species (S. leucostictus, S. diencaeus and S. planifrons) were associated with conspecifics possibly due to preferential settlement. Similarly, new recruits were more often found near live coral than coral rubble, and very few occurred on sand habitat. Substratum complexity was a poor predictor of recruitment within a habitat, although larger juveniles of some species were more common on more complex substrate. Contrary to other studies, there were no apparent depth preferences among recruits, although larger juveniles of two Stegastes species were found more often in deeper water. It appears that within habitats, newly arriving larvae may be attracted first to the presence of conspecifics and secondarily take up position adjacent to live coral. Apparent survivorship of some Stegastes species and one Chromis species was higher at Outer Brass Island than at Flat Cay, and may partly compensate for lower recruitment of some species at Outer Brass Island.  相似文献

The territorial behaviour of a small rock-dwelling cichlid, Pseudotropheus aurora , was studied at Thumbi Island West at the southern end of Lake Malawi. P. aurora is one of several species that have been introduced to an already diverse fish community. Many of the endemic and introduced species are highly territorial. The coexistence of an introduced territorial species within a speciesrich community of other territorial species is examined. Territories from which P. aurora individuals were removed were invariably re-occupied by conspecifics. Similarly, when all territories of a certain area were emptied of all territory owners of any existing species, the former P. aurora territories were re-occupied by conspecifics.
The possible roles of site specificity, competitive exclusion and behaviourally transmitted traditions regarding territories are discussed.  相似文献

At Thumbi Island West in Lake Malawi, a number of cichlid species was introduced from elsewhere in the lake some 20 years ago. These are now, in part, well established and could have an effect on the indigenous fish fauna. Repeated removals of the males of the introduced species from their territories were undertaken and artificial miniature reefs were established to find out whether the emptied existing territories or the newly established potential territories would be occupied by indigenous species. The results show that the emptied territories were almost invariably re-occupied by either a male of the introduced species conspecific to the previous territory holder or they remained empty. The newly established miniature reefs were not occupied by territorial males of either introduced or indigenous species but by young fish of a variety of species.  相似文献

Recruitment is an important process in regulating many marine benthic communities and many studies have examined factors controlling the dispersal and distribution of larval immigrants. However, benthic species also have early post-settlement life-stages that are dramatically different from adult and larval stages. Predation on these stages potentially impacts measured recruitment and the benthic populations and communities that ultimately develop.We examined the consequences of post-settlement predation on 1-day-old to 1-month-old recruits of sessile invertebrates at two field sites in southern New England. One site (Breakwater) was in a protected area with few predators and the other (Pine Island) was <1 km away in an open coast area with three different predator guilds: small and large invertebrates and fish. The Breakwater site had been dominated for >10 years by colonial and solitary ascidians. These species were absent from the Pine Island site which was dominated by bryozoans. Our goal was to examine whether post-settlement predation influenced the development and subsequent structure of the epifaunal community.Here we examine long-term changes in community development resulting from post-settlement predation, and contrast these results to those of earlier experiments examining the reductions in observed recruitment by post-settlement predation. Our first long-term experiment examined natural community development at the two sites and whether transplanted communities changed when exposed to the different levels of predation at these sites. The communities that developed at both sites were consistently different from each other and similar to resident communities at their respective sites. On panels transplanted from the Breakwater to Pine Island, solitary ascidians and the colonial ascidian, Botryllus schlosseri, suffered high mortalities on both caged and uncaged treatments, indicative of predation by small predators that could enter cages. Some solitary ascidians did survive inside cages and the colonial ascidian, Botrylloides violaceus, became dominant on all transplanted treatments. On panels transplanted from Pine Island to the Breakwater, ascidians invaded and dominated all treatments except those that were originally caged at Pine Island.In the second long-term experiment, natural communities were allowed to develop on panels exposed at the Breakwater for 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks. Each set was transplanted to three treatments at Pine Island: open uncaged pilings, caged pilings to exclude fish and large invertebrates, and racks suspended above the bottom to exclude all predators. When 1-week-old communities were transplanted, after 2-3 weeks only bryozoans were found on the open and caged pilings, while colonial ascidians dominated the suspended rack treatment. When older 2-week-old communities were transplanted, colonial ascidians also became dominant in the caged piling treatment and when 3- and 4-week-old communities were transplanted colonial ascidians dominated all three treatments. Solitary ascidians were never abundant on open pilings exposed to fish and large benthic invertebrate predators.Post-settlement predator-prey interactions involved newly settled and juvenile life-stages of a variety of prey species and many invertebrate and vertebrate predator species. The effects of these interactions on recruitment did result in differences in the development and eventual species composition of the communities, even though predators had little if any effect on the adults of the prey species.  相似文献

Predators have important effects on coral reef fish populations, but their effects on community structure have only recently been investigated and are not yet well understood. Here, the effect of predation on the diversity and abundance of young coral reef fishes was experimentally examined in Moorea, French Polynesia. Effects of predators were quantified by monitoring recruitment of fishes onto standardized patch reefs in predator-exclosure cages or uncaged reefs. At the end of the 54-day experiment, recruits were 74% less abundant on reefs exposed to predators than on caged ones, and species richness was 42% lower on reefs exposed to predators. Effects of predators varied somewhat among families, however, rarefaction analysis indicated that predators foraged non-selectively among species. These results indicate that predation can alter diversity of reef fish communities by indiscriminately reducing the abundance of fishes soon after settlement, thereby reducing the number of species present on reefs.  相似文献

The spatio-temporal variability of scleractinian coral recruitment was investigated from December 2000 to December 2003 around Moorea Island (French Polynesia). Nine stations, each with 20 terracotta tiles, were placed on the outer reef slope, at 3 sites (Vaipahu, Tiahura, Haapiti), and at 3 depths (6, 12 and 18 m). The relative contribution of the different families of recruits (Pocilloporidae: 60.4%, Poritidae: 18.8%, Acroporidae: 11.2%) and the very low recruitment rates (maximum: 35 recruits per tile, higher mean densities of 10.8 recruits per tile, average 40.77 recruits m− 2 year− 1) recorded at Moorea are similar to recruitment patterns recorded on sub-tropical reefs. Over the duration of the study period, we detected a marked seasonal variability in recruitment rates, with the peak recruitment for all families recorded in December-March periods, corresponding to periods of warmest SSTs. However, recruits of Acroporidae were also relatively abundant in the September-December period in some years, which coincides with the known spawning periods of some Acropora species. Total recruitment rate decreased after the first year of the survey, and was probably the result of the bleaching event that occurred in early 2002, which may have reduced fecundity of some coral populations. A lower proportion of recruits were found on the upper surface of the tiles (14.5%), compared to the lower surfaces (57.1%) and sides (28.4%), which is likely the result of intense grazing by herbivorous fish and urchins. We detected a patchy distribution at the station scale, and a significant variation in recruitment patterns among depths and sites. Pocilloporidae recruited more abundantly at 6 and 18 m, whereas Poritidae were generally more abundant at 12 m depth. In contrast, Acroporidae showed no clear depth pattern during the study period. Recruitment was lowest at the most exposed site (Haapiti), especially for Acroporidae, and probably reflects lower settlement rates and/or higher early post-settlement mortality caused by frequent high swells and their associated strong currents. These distinctive characteristics in recruitment patterns of the 3 dominant families of recruits underline the important role of life history strategies in understanding the spatial patterns, dynamics and maintenance processes of coral populations. The relatively low coral recruitment rates recorded from this study indicate that recovery from severe or frequent perturbations will be slow.  相似文献

The density of recruits of scleractinian corals on settlement plates at Lord Howe Island, a small isolated sub-tropical island 630 km off the Australian coastline, was within the range of values reported for comparable studies on the Great Barrier Reef. However, there was a difference in the relative abundance of taxonomic groups, with recruitment at Lord Howe Island during the summer of 1990/91 dominated by corals from the Family Pocilloporidae, Family Poritidae, and sub-genus Acropora (Isopora) (in order of abundance). By contrast, on the Great Barrier Reef, recruits are generally predominantly species from the Family Acroporidae (other than the Acropora (Isopora) group). Both the recruits and the established coral communities at Lord Howe Island are dominanted by corals which release brooded planulae, as opposed to the pattern of mass-spawning with external fertilisation more typical of Great Barrier Reef corals. I hypothesise that the release of brooded planulae would be advantageous in an isolated reef community because (a) brooded larvae can travel large distances and survive the journey to the isolated reef and/or (b) brooded larvae have a shorter period before they are competent to settle and are therefore more likely to be retained on the parental reef once a population has been established.  相似文献

Summary Visual census was used to sample young of the year of fish species recruited to each of two habitats on seven lagoonal platform reefs of the Capricorn-Bunker Group, Great Barrier Reef. The reefs sampled span an area 70 km in extent. In 1983, 62 species from 13 families were detected as recruits on reef slope sites. The total number of cruits, and the number of each of 6 of 16 species tested, differed significantly among reefs, despite the fact that differences among sites within reefs did not exist, and that sampled slopes were chosen to be hydrographically, and physiographically as similar as possible. Lagoonal patch reefs were sampled in two years. In 1982, 76 species of 11 families occurred as recruits. In 1983, 86 species of 12 families were recorded. All of 22 species common enough to test showed some significant variation in abundance among reefs, years, or both. For 9 species, significant year x reef interactions occurred, demonstrating that relative recruitment success among reefs varied between years. Reasons for the substantial levels of variability are discussed, and implications for the organisation of reef fish communities are considered.  相似文献

Over small spatial scales, variation in the density of settlers of benthic sessile species is the result of interactions among larval behavior, local hydrodynamic conditions, and the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the benthic habitat. It has been shown repeatedly that adult benthic filter-feeders can consume larvae of their own and other species, but their effects on the distribution and abundance of recruits have rarely been demonstrated under natural conditions in the field, particularly on hard substrata. Here we experimentally quantified the effect of the large intertidal barnacle, Semibalanus cariosus (Pallas), on the density of recruits of three common barnacle species. The experiments were conducted at the peak of the barnacle recruitment season over three successive years, on the west coast of San Juan Island, Washington. A persistent and well documented community pattern in the mid intertidal zone of the study site is a sparse bed of adult S. cariosus with bare rock spaces essentially devoid of small barnacles among the large individuals. Field experiments consisted of small areas from which either all adult S. cariosus were killed leaving the shells attached to the rock, or live adult barnacles were left intact. Our results showed that over small spatial scales of a few to tens of centimeters, the large barnacle S. cariosus can interfere and significantly reduce net settlement and recruitment of conspecific as well as other barnacle species. Between 65 and 100% reduction in settlement could be attributed to larval predation by adults, as implied by barnacle settlement patterns on different treatments and by the presence of nauplius larvae in cirri and stomach contents of S. cariosus. The negative effect on barnacle settlement was consistent between years of relatively low barnacle recruitment, which appears to be the most common situation at the study site, but it disappeared on a year of unusually high recruitment, when settling larvae seem to have swamped the filtration ability of adult S. cariosus. The different barnacle species displayed contrasting settlement patterns on bare rock and on the lateral shells of the large barnacles, which appear to be a result of differences in larval behavior. Comparisons against the relative availability of these substrata in the experimental plots suggested that larvae of different species sample the benthic microhabitat in very different ways.  相似文献

Summary Eupomacentrus apicalis, Plectroglyphidodon lacrymatus, and Pomacentrus wardi are territorial pomacentrid fishes which occupy contiguous individual territories within rubble patches on the shallow reef slope. Loss of residents, which is non-seasonal (except for juvenile Po. wardi), results in reallocation of space in rubble patches among the species. This reallocation is random in the sense that sites previously held by one species will not be more likely than any other sites to be reoccupied by that species or to be occupied by any other particular species. The results of a 38 month study of three neighbouring patches are used to determine patterns of recruitment, survivorship, and loss for each species. The rate of recruitment of fish is proportional to the area of the rubble patch, and is seasonal in at least one of the species. About half the recruits are juveniles and young adults from other sites. The others are newly settled from the plankton. Total space used in a rubble patch does not vary significantly during the 38 month period. Po. wardi recruits and is lost at higher rates than the other species and its survivorship is significantly lower. Juvenile Po. wardi are lost at a greater rate than are adults, and their loss rate varies seasonally. The other species are similar to one another in having low recruitment and loss rates, and correspondingly high survivorship. The data are used in a critical assessment of several competing hypotheses to explain the coexistence of these fish. The available data are most closely compatible with the chance allocation or lottery hypothesis, but a definitive conclusion is not possible, and is probably beyond current experimental techniques.  相似文献

Most of Malawi's popular food-fish species are in decline. The fishers attribute this decline to overfishing, changes in climate, inadequate fishing technology and supernatural powers. Sedimentation of the lake and rivers due to poor agricultural practices, which can also be implicated in the demise of Malawi's fisheries, was not recognized by the fishers. This study tested and confirmed that the fishers would readily switch to exploiting ornamental fish (Mbuna) for subsistence and cash if the more favoured food-fish species continued to dwindle. However, as most of the Mbuna species are localized to specific rocky habitats and are endemic to certain parts of the lake, they may be vulnerable to overfishing. To safeguard Lake Malawi's rich fish species diversity: (i) alternative economic opportunities for the lakeshore people should be identified, evaluated and promoted to alleviate the fishing pressure, (ii) the Department of Fisheries should collaborate with local fishermen in promoting sustainable fish utilization, e.g., through public campaigns aimed at sensitizing fishermen on the status of the fisheries and the vulnerability of some fish communities to overfishing and environmental degradation, and (iii) the degree of Mbuna exploitation, now that the popular food fishes are in decline, should be monitored and, where necessary, regulated to promote sustainability.  相似文献

Processes acting during the early stages of coral reef fish life cycles have a disproportionate influence on their adult abundance and community structure. Higher growth rates, for example, confer a major fitness advantage in larval and juvenile fishes, with larger fish undergoing significantly less mortality. The role of dietary resources in the size-structuring process has not been well validated, especially at the early post-settlement phase, where competition and predation are seen as preeminent drivers of juvenile fish assemblage structure. Here, we report on a size differential of 10–20% between recently settled Siganus spinus rabbitfish recruits from different bays around the Pacific island of Guam. This difference was maintained across multiple recruitment events within and between years. After confirming the validity of our observations through otolith increment analysis, subsequent investigation into the drivers of this variation revealed significant differences in the structure of algal assemblages between bays, congruent with the observed differences in size of the recently settled fish. Gut analyses showed a greater presence of algal types with higher levels of nitrogen and phosphorus in the stomachs of fish from Tanguisson, the bay with the largest observed recruits. To ensure this mechanism was one of causation and not correlation, we conducted a fully factorial experiment in which S. spinus recruits sampled from different bays were reared on all combinations of algal diets representative of the different bays. Recruits on the ‘Tanguisson’ diet grew faster than recruits on other diets, regardless of their origin. We propose that the greater availability of high-quality dietary resources at this location is likely conferring benefits that impact on the population-level dynamics of this species. The spatial and temporal extent of this process clearly implicates food as a limiting resource, capable of mediating fish population dynamics at multiple spatial scales and ontogenetic phases.  相似文献

We used microsatellite markers to assess the population genetic structure of the scribbled rabbitfish Siganus spinus in the western Pacific. This species is a culturally important food fish in the Mariana Archipelago and subject to high fishing pressure. Our primary hypothesis was to test whether the individuals resident in the southern Mariana Island chain were genetically distinct and hence should be managed as discrete stocks. In addition to spatial sampling of adults, newly‐settled individuals were sampled on Guam over four recruitment events to assess the temporal stability of the observed spatial patterns, and evidence of self‐recruitment. We found significant genetic structure in S. spinus across the western Pacific, with Bayesian analyses revealing three genetically distinct clusters: the southern Mariana Islands, east Micronesia, and the west Pacific; with the southern Mariana Islands being more strongly differentiated from the rest of the region. Analyses of temporal samples from Guam indicated the southern Mariana cluster was stable over time, with no genetic differentiation between adults versus recruits, or between samples collected across four separate recruitment events spanning 11 months. Subsequent assignment tests indicated seven recruits had self‐recruited from within the Southern Mariana Islands population. Our results confirm the relative isolation of the southern Mariana Islands population and highlight how local processes can act to isolate populations that, by virtue of their broad‐scale distribution, have been subject to traditionally high gene flows. Our results add to a growing consensus that self‐recruitment is a highly significant influence on the population dynamics of tropical reef fish.  相似文献

Variation in life-history traits (growth, condition, mortality and recruitment) and relative abundance of 11 large-bodied fish species was investigated among three water-management regimes (unimpounded, run-of-the-river and winter reservoirs) in the large regulated Ottawa River, Canada. If waterpower management had an effect on fishes, then (1) would be expected community structuring among water-management regimes and (2) species with similar life-history traits should be affected in a similar manner. Large-bodied fish communities were assessed using two different standard index-netting techniques, one using trap nets and the other gillnets. Community structure could be discriminated based on species caught in nets using holographic neural networks (78·8% correct overall classification rate using trap nets and 76·0% using gillnets); therefore, water-management regimes affected community structure in the Ottawa River. Littoral zone benthivores were significantly lower in abundance ( P < 0·001) or absent in winter reservoirs, whereas the abundance of planktivores or species that were planktivorous at young ages were significantly greater than in unimpounded river reaches. Growth, condition and mortality did not vary among reach types except smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieu were in better condition in winter reservoirs than unimpounded reaches. Lake sturgeon Acipenser fulvescens recruitment was impaired in run-of-the-river reaches, whereas recruitment for other species that spawn in fast water was not affected.  相似文献

Many marine populations exhibit high variability in the recruitment of young into the population. While environmental cycles and oceanography explain some patterns of replenishment, the role of other growth-related processes in influencing settlement and recruitment is less clear. Examination of a 65-mo. time series of recruitment of a common coral reef fish, Stegastes partitus, to the reefs of the upper Florida Keys revealed that during peak recruitment months, settlement stage larvae arriving during dark lunar phases grew faster as larvae and were larger at settlement compared to those settling during the light lunar phases. However, the strength and direction of early trait-mediated selective mortality also varied by settlement lunar phase such that the early life history traits of 2–4 week old recruit survivors that settled across the lunar cycle converged to more similar values. Similarly, within peak settlement periods, early life history traits of settling larvae and selective mortality of recruits varied by the magnitude of the settlement event: larvae settling in larger events had longer PLDs and consequently were larger at settlement than those settling in smaller pulses. Traits also varied by recruitment habitat: recruits surviving in live coral habitat (vs rubble) or areas with higher densities of adult conspecifics were those that were larger at settlement. Reef habitats, especially those with high densities of territorial conspecifics, are more challenging habitats for young fish to occupy and small settlers (due to lower larval growth and/or shorter PLDs) to these habitats have a lower chance of survival than they do in rubble habitats. Settling reef fish are not all equal and the time and location of settlement influences the likelihood that individuals will survive to contribute to the population.  相似文献

This study examines scleractinian zooxanthellate coral recruitment patterns in the Florida Keys to determine if differences in density or community composition exist between regions. From July to September 2002, nine patch reefs, three in each of the upper, middle and lower Keys, were surveyed for coral recruits (colonies <5 cm in diameter) using randomly placed quadrats and transects. Coral recruits were enumerated, measured, and identified to genus. Fourteen genera of corals were observed across all sites and ranged from five to 13 per site. Densities ranged from 6.29 +/- 1.92 (mean +/- SE) to 39.08 +/- 4.53 recruits m(-2), and there were significant site and regional differences in recruit densities. The density of recruits in the upper Keys was significantly lower than in the middle and lower Keys. In addition, the upper Keys were less diverse and had a different recruit size-frequency distribution. The majority of recruits were non-massive scleractinian species that contribute relatively little to overall reef-building processes, a finding that is similar to previous studies. Fewer recruits of massive species were found in the upper Keys compared to the middle and lower Keys. The recruitment patterns of the reefs in the upper Keys could potentially hinder their ability to recover from stress and disturbances.  相似文献

In the sublittoral kelp forests of New South Wales, dictyotalean turfing algae dominate the substratum in areas where kelp canopies have been removed by storms. The effects of the presence of these algae on the recruitment of kelp plants and the subsequent structure of the benthic community were determined. Areas of turfing algae in clearings were experimentally cleared of turf at a time of dense kelp settlement, and areas of the kelp canopy were also removed. These treatments were compared with unmanipulated areas of turf in clearings and areas under the kelp canopy. The number of kelp recruits in each replicate plot was recorded throughout time as were the abundances of most of the macroscopic and microscopic species living on the substratum. Kelp was found to recruit very quickly to areas of substratum which had the overlying kelp canopy removed, but few recruits appeared under the natural canopy, or in areas with turfing algae, or in clearings where turfing algae had been removed. The results showed that whilst the presence of a natural kelp canopy and/or turfing algae inhibited the recruitment of kelps, removal of turfing species from clearings did not facilitate kelp recruitment. This indicated that the presence of turf did not solely inhibit kelp recruitment, but some lingering influence of turf seems to affect the substratum in clearings such that kelp cannot recruit to such areas. Turfing species returned and dominated the substratum in clearings where turf had been removed. After an initial decline, encrusting species increased in abundances in clearings where kelp recruited as these recruits developed a canopy. Turf and encrusting species remained great in cover in the respective control treatments. The results are discussed in terms of alternate stable states within this community. Such concepts are concluded to be dependent upon the spatial and temporal scales of one's investigation.  相似文献

The present study investigated species richness, relative abundance, and short temporal variability of rockpool fish communities on the southwestern coast of Yaku-shima Island, northwestern Pacific. In total, 2,850 fish (total biomass approximately 3,400 g) representing 17 families and 54 species were collected from 16 rockpools from May 2009 to February 2010. Gobiidae (12 species), Blenniidae (10), Pomacentridae (6), and Labridae (5) were the dominant families; Blenniidae was the most abundant family (57.1 % of the total number of fish), followed by Gobiidae (30.1 %), Tripterygiidae (5.3 %), Labridae (3.2 %), and Pomacentridae (2.4 %). The Blenniidae accounted for more than 80.0 % of the community biomass. This dominance of Blenniidae and Gobiidae in the community reflects their diversity in the western Pacific and ability to adapt to rocky intertidal habitats. The mean density and species richness of rockpool fish decreased significantly in winter. This is attributed to a decrease in recruitment of transient and accidental visitor species into the rockpool environments, which in turn was due to a significant decline in water temperature in winter. However, mean diversity index (Simpson’s D) did not vary significantly across the seasons, because over 80.0 % of the total number of individuals in each season was from six common species (three blenniids, two gobiids, and a tripterygiid). It can be concluded that the community composition is generally stable over short time-scales. The biogeographic composition of this assemblage was compared with those of two other sites (cited from two past studies) in southern Japanese waters. These other sites were mostly composed of warm temperate species, with regard to the number of species and individuals, while tropical species were predominant in the assemblage at the southwestern coast of Yaku-shima Island. This result suggests that the warm Kuroshio Current has more influence on the Yaku-shima Island coastal fauna than it does on those of the other sites in southern Japanese waters.  相似文献
