Pentaclethra macroloba (Willd.) Kuntze (Mimosaceae) is a dominant late-successional tree species in the Atlantic lowland forests of Costa Rica. Leaves of P. macroloba from three heights in the forest canopy were compared with leaves of seedlings grown in controlled environment chambers under four different irradiance levels. Changes in leaf characteristics along the canopy gradient paralleled changes resulting from the light gradient under controlled conditions. The effect of light or canopy position on light-saturated photosynthesis was small, with maximum photosynthesis increasing from 5 to 6.5 μmol m−-2 s−-1 from understory to canopy. Both chamber grown and field leaves showed large adjustments in photosynthetic efficiency at low light via reductions in dark respiration rates and increases in apparent quantum yields. Light saturation of all leaves occurred at or below 500 μmol m−-2 s−-1. Leaf thickness, specific leaf weight, and stomatal density increased to a greater extent than saturated photosynthesis with higher irradiance during growth or height in the canopy. As a result, there was a poor correspondence between leaf thickness and light-saturated photosynthesis on an area basis. It is concluded that Pentaclethra macroloba possesses the characteristics of a typical shade-tolerant species.  相似文献

Photosynthesis–irradiance relationships of macroalgal communities and thalli of dominant species in shallow coastal Danish waters were measured over a full year to test how well community production can be predicted from environmental (incident irradiance and temperature) and community variables (canopy absorptance, species number and thallus metabolism). Detached thalli of dominant species performed optimally at different times of the year, but showed no general seasonal changes in photosynthetic features. Production capacity of communities at high light varied only 1.8-fold over the year and was unrelated to incident irradiance, temperature and mean thallus photosynthesis, while community absorptance was a highly significant predictor. Actual rates of community photosynthesis were closely related to incident and absorbed irradiance alone. Community absorptance in turn was correlated to canopy height and species richness. The close relationship of community photosynthesis to irradiance is due to the fact that (1) large differences in thallus photosynthesis of individual species are averaged out in communities composed of several species, (2) seasonal replacement of species keeps communities metabolically active, and (3) maximum possible absorptance at 100% constrains the total photosynthesis of all species. Our results imply that the photosynthetic production of macroalgal communities is more predictable than their complex and dynamic nature suggest and that predictions are possible over wide spatial scales in coastal waters by measurements of vegetation cover, incoming irradiance and canopy absorptance.  相似文献

Summary A model of daily canopy photosynthesis was constructed taking light and leaf nitrogen distribution in the canopy into consideration. It was applied to a canopy of Solidago altissima. Both irradiance and nitrogen concentration per unit leaf area decreased exponentially with increasing cumulative leaf area from the top of the canopy. The photosynthetic capacity of a single leaf was evaluated in relation to irradiance and nitrogen concentration. By integration, daily canopy photosynthesis was calculated for various canopy architectures and nitrogen allocation patterns. The optimal pattern of nitrogen distribution that maximizes the canopy photosynthesis was determined. Actual distribution of leaf nitrogen in the canopy was more uniform than the optimal one, but it realized over 20% more photosynthesis than that under uniform distribution and 4.7% less photosynthesis than that under the optimal distribution. Redeployment of leaf nitrogen to the top of the canopy with ageing should be more effective in increasing total canopy photosynthesis in a stand with a dense canopy than in a stand with an open canopy.  相似文献

Summary The effects of irradiance during growth on biomass allocation, growth rates, leaf chlorophyll and protein contents, and on gas exchange responses to irradiance and CO2 partial pressures of the evergreen, sclerophyllous, chaparral shrub, Ceanothus megacarpus were determined. Plants were grown at 4 irradiances for the growth experiments, 8, 17, 25, 41 nE cm-2 sec-1, and at 2 irradiances, 9 and 50 nE cm-2 sec-1, for the other comparisons. At higher irradiances root/shoot ratios were somewhat greater and specific leaf weights were much greater, while leaf area ratios were much lower and leaf weight ratios were slightly lower than at lower irradiances. Relative growth rates increased with increasing irradiance up to 25 nE cm-2 sec-1 and then leveled off, while unit leaf area rates increased steeply and unit leaf weight rates increased more gradually up to the highest growth irradiance.Leaves grown at 9 nE cm-2 sec-1 had less total chlorophyll per unit leaf area and more per unit leaf weight than those grown at 50 nE cm-2 sec-1. In a reverse of what is commonly found, low irradiance grown leaves had significantly higher chlorophyll a/b than high irradiance grown leaves. High irradiance grown leaves had much more total soluble protein per unit leaf area and per unit dry weight, and they had much higher soluble protein/chlorophyll than low irradiance grown leaves.High irradiance grown leaves had higher rates of respiration in very dim light, required higher irradiances for photosynthetic saturation and had higher irradiance saturated rates of photosynthesis than low irradiance grown leaves. CO2 compensation irradiances for leaves of both treatments were very low, <5 nE cm-2 sec-1. Leaves grown under low and those grown under high irradiances reached 95% of their saturated photosynthetic rates at 65 and 85 nE cm-2 sec-1, respectively. Irradiance saturated rates of photosynthesis were high compared to other chaparral shrubs, 1.3 for low and 1.9 nmol CO2 cm-2 sec-1 for high irradiance grown leaves. A very unusual finding was that leaf conductances to H2O were significantly lower in the high irradiance grown leaves than in the low irradiance grown leaves. This, plus the differences in photosynthetic rates, resulted in higher water use efficiencies by the high irradiance grown leaves. High irradiance grown leaves had higher rates of photosynthesis at any particular intercellular CO2 partial pressure and also responded more steeply to increasing CO2 partial pressure than did low irradiance grown leaves. Leaves from both treatments showed reduced photosynthetic capability after being subjected to low CO2 partial pressures (100 bars) under high irradiances. This treatment was more detrimental to leaves grown under low irradiances. The ecological implications of these findings are discussed in terms of chaparral shrub community structure. We suggest that light availability may be an important determinant of chaparral community structure through its effects on water use efficiencies rather than on net carbon gain.  相似文献

A three-dimensional computer model of canopies of the seagrass Amphibolis griffithii was used to investigate the consequences of variations in canopy structure and benthic light environment on leaf-level photosynthetic saturation state. The model was constructed using empirical data of plant morphometrics from a previously conducted shading experiment and validated well to in-situ data on light attenuation in canopies of different densities. Using published values of the leaf-level saturating irradiance for photosynthesis, results show that the interaction of canopy density and canopy-scale photosynthetic response is complex and non-linear, due to the combination of self-shading and the non-linearity of photosynthesis versus irradiance (P-I) curves near saturating irradiance. Therefore studies of light limitation in seagrasses should consider variation in canopy structure and density. Based on empirical work, we propose a number of possible measures for canopy scale photosynthetic response that can be plotted to yield isoclines in the space of canopy density and light environment. These plots can be used to interpret the significance of canopy changes induced as a response to decreases in the benthic light environment: in some cases canopy thinning can lead to an equivalent leaf level light environment, in others physiological changes may also be required but these alone may be inadequate for canopy survival. By providing insight to these processes the methods developed here could be a valuable management tool for seagrass conservation during dredging or other coastal developments.  相似文献

Mathematical models of light attenuation and canopy photosynthesis suggest that crop photosynthesis increases by more uniform vertical irradiance within crops. This would result when a larger proportion of total irradiance is applied within canopies (interlighting) instead of from above (top lighting). These irradiance profiles can be generated by Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). We investigated the effects of interlighting with LEDs on light interception, on vertical gradients of leaf photosynthetic characteristics and on crop production and development of a greenhouse‐grown Cucumis sativus‘Samona’ crop and analysed the interaction between them. Plants were grown in a greenhouse under low natural irradiance (winter) with supplemental irradiance of 221 µmol photosynthetic photon flux m?2 s?1 (20 h per day). In the interlighting treatment, LEDs (80% Red, 20% Blue) supplied 38% of the supplemental irradiance within the canopy with 62% as top lighting by High‐Pressure Sodium (HPS)‐lamps. The control was 100% top lighting (HPS lamps). We measured horizontal and vertical light extinction as well as leaf photosynthetic characteristics at different leaf layers, and determined total plant production. Leaf mass per area and dry mass allocation to leaves were significantly greater but leaf appearance rate and plant length were smaller in the interlighting treatment. Although leaf photosynthetic characteristics were significantly increased in the lower leaf layers, interlighting did not increase total biomass or fruit production, partly because of a significantly reduced vertical and horizontal light interception caused by extreme leaf curling, likely because of the LED‐light spectrum used, and partly because of the relatively low irradiances from above.  相似文献

Leaf net photosynthesis is crucial for detecting the mechanism of photosynthesis, whereas community net photosynthesis is useful for understanding the photosynthetic capacity of communities and its relationship with environmental factors. In particular, we need to scale up eco-physiological models from leaf scale to canopy level to study carbon cycling at regional or global scale. We hypothesized that accumulated leaf net photosynthetic rate (Pc) at community scale, i.e., calculated based on leaf net photosynthetic rate (Pn) and leaf area index (LAI), equals to measured net community CO2 exchange (NCE). The purpose of this study is to verify this hypothesis. Our field study was carried out in Duolun, Nei Mongol, China, where we constructed single-species communities by sowing Medicago sativa ‘Aohan’ seeds in three plots (3 m × 5 m) on May 30, 2012. On August 16, 2014, Pn of five healthy leaves of M. sativa ‘Aohan’ in each plot were measured with a LI-6400 portable photosynthesis system at 10:00, and net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE) in each plot was measured simultaneously with a LI-8100 system connected with a assimilation chamber (0.5 m × 0.5 m × 0.5 m). Pc was calculated based on Pn, number of leaves (n), LAI percentage of healthy leaves (r) and percentage of received effective light by leaves (m). NCE was derived from NEE and ecosystem respiration rate (Reco). Pc was 3.52 μmol CO2·m-2·s-1, and very close to NCE (3.56 μmol CO2·m-2·s-1), suggesting that leaf-scale photosynthesis may accurately predict community-scale photosynthesis. However, our method could not separate community respiration from soil respiration, and future studies, should be designed to counteract this effect. Scaling up from leaf photosynthesis to community photosynthesis should also consider vertical structure of communities and nonlinear responses of leaf photosynthesis to changes in light quantum.

Light-saturated photosynthetic rates at air levels of carbon dioxide were measured about weekly in upper canopy leaves of two soybean cultivars grown at stand densities of 40 and 100 plants per square meter. Early in the season, when leaf area indices differed between stand densities, plants of both cultivars grown at high stand density had photosynthetic rates which averaged 23% lower than plants at low stand density. Later in the season, when there were no differences in leaf area index between stand densities, there were no differences in photosynthetic rates in the cultivar Kent, but rate differences of about 14% persisted in the cultivar Williams. In Williams mainstem leaves emerged into full sunlight later in their development at high than at low stand density. In both cultivars the oldest fully exposed leaves were photosynthetically immature for much of the season, as higher rates could be achieved by lower leaves which were shaded in situ. The results identify shading of young developing leaves and photosynthetic immaturity of fully exposed leaves as factors limiting canopy photosynthesis in soybeans, and indicate cultivar differences in how much high stand density reduces photosynthetic capacity.  相似文献

Small communities of S24 ryegrass were grown under supplementarylights in a glasshouse at 20°C, and abundantly suppliedwith a complete nutrient solution containing 300 p.p.m. of nitrogen, until they had a leaf area index of 5 and fully interceptedthe light. Half were then given a solution containing only 3p.p.m. of nitrogen (LN) while the rest were kept at 300 p.p.m.(HN). The LN plants had a rate of single leaf photosynthesis lowerthan that of the HN plants at all but the lowest light intensities(33 per cent lower at the saturating irradiance of 170 W m–2).Similarly, the LN communities had rates of canopy gross photosynthesis(Psc) markedly lower than those of the HN communities. A comparisonof the observed rates of Psc with those predicted by a mathematicalmodel of canopy photosynthesis indicated that it was the effectof nitrogen on single leaf photosynthesis, rather than differencesbetween the communities in leaf area, which led to the observeddifferences in Psc. The superiority of the HN communities in terms of Psc was partlyoffset by a higher rate of respiration so that they only exceededthe LN communities in terms of canopy net photosynthesis atirradiances in excess of 180 W m–2, and produced only15 per cent more total dry matter. Nevertheless, the HN plantsdirected less of that dry matter into root and more into topsso that they came to possess twice the weight of live laminae, and the HN communities twice the leaf area, of their nitrogendeficient counterparts. Photosynthetic characteristics at high measurement irradiance were analyzed for single leaves of two C3 and one C4 species grown under twenty one combinations of irradiance level, irradiance duration, and air temperature in order to test the idea that photosynthetic characteristies developed by leaves in different environments are controlled by the daily amount of photosynthesis. Photosynthetic rates per unit area and mesophyll conductances at 25°C and air levels of CO2 and O2, and parameters for two photosynthesis models were used to characterize the photosynthetic properties of the leaves. Leaves with highest values of the photosynthetic parameters for each species were often developed in environments with irradiance levels below saturation for photosynthesis, and with only 12 hours of irradiance per day. Lower air temperature during growth increased the photosynthetic characteristics for a given irradiance regime. Photosynthetic characteristics had higher correlation coefficients with daily photosynthesis of mature leaves divided by 24-hour leaf elongation rates of young leaves, than with daily photosynthesis alone, indicating that photosynthetic characteristics may be related to a balance between photosynthesis and leaf expansion.  相似文献

Photosynthesis, transpiration, and leaf area distribution were sampled in mature Quercus virginiana and Juniperus ashei trees to determine the impact of leaf position on canopy-level gas exchange, and how gas exchange patterns may affect the successful invasion of Quercus communities by J. ashei. Sampling was conducted monthly over a 2-yr period in 12 canopy locations (three canopy layers and four cardinal directions). Photosynthetic and transpiration rates of both species were greatest in the upper canopy and decreased with canopy depth. Leaf photosynthetic and transpiration rates were significantly higher for Q. virginiana (4.1–6.7 μmol CO2·m−2·s−1 and 1.1–2.1 mmol H2O·m−2·s−1) than for J. ashei (2.1–2.8 μmol CO2·m−2·s−1 and 0.7–1.0 mmol H2O·m−2·s−1) in every canopy level and direction. Leaves on the south and east sides of both species had higher gas exchange rates than leaves on the north and west sides. Although Quercus had a greater mean canopy diameter than Juniperus (31.3 vs. 27.7 m2), J. ashei had significantly greater leaf area (142 vs. 58 m2/tree). A simple model combining leaf area and gas exchange rates for different leaf positions demonstrated a significantly greater total canopy carbon dioxide uptake for J. ashei compared to Q. virginiana (831 vs. 612 g CO2·tree−1·d−1, respectively). Total daily water loss was also greater for Juniperus (125 vs. 73 Ltree−1·d−1). Differences in leaf gas exchange rates were poor predictors of the relationship between the invasive J. ashei and the codominant Q. virginiana. Leaf area and leaf area distribution coupled with leaf gas exchange rates were necessary to demonstrate the higher overall competitive potential of J. ashei.  相似文献

A model of dynamics of leaves and nitrogen is developed to predict the effect of environmental and ecophysiological factors on the structure and photosynthesis of a plant canopy. In the model, leaf area in the canopy increases by the production of new leaves, which is proportional to the canopy photosynthetic rate, with canopy nitrogen increasing with uptake of nitrogen from soil. Then the optimal leaf area index (LAI; leaf area per ground area) that maximizes canopy photosynthesis is calculated. If leaf area is produced in excess, old leaves are eliminated with their nitrogen as dead leaves. Consequently, a new canopy having an optimal LAI and an optimal amount of nitrogen is obtained. Repeating these processes gives canopy growth. The model provides predictions of optimal LAI, canopy photosynthetic rates, leaf life span, nitrogen use efficiency, and also the responses of these factors to changes in nitrogen and light availability. Canopies are predicted to have a larger LAI and a higher canopy photosynthetic rate at a steady state under higher nutrient and/or light availabilities. Effects of species characteristics, such as photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency and leaf mass per area, are also evaluated. The model predicts many empirically observed patterns for ecophysiological traits across species.  相似文献

1. The connection between high leaf area index (LAI) and photosynthetic production with two attributes of coniferous canopy structure: small leaf size and grouping of needles on shoots, was analysed using a simulation model.
2. The small size of conifer needles gives rise to penumbras, which even out the distribution of direct sunlight on the leaf area and thereby act to increase the rate of canopy photosynthesis per unit of LAI.
3. Grouping, by producing a non-uniform distribution of leaf area, causes a decrease in total canopy light interception at any given LAI, but improves the photosynthetic light capture by shoots in the lower canopy.
4. Application of the model on a case study showed that: (a) grouping had a negative effect on the rate of photosynthesis in the upper canopy, but deeper down in the canopy the situation was reversed; (b) in the lower canopy, photosynthetic rates were up to 10 times higher as a result from the combined effect of grouping and penumbra; (c) grouping did not improve the rate of canopy photosynthesis per unit of LAI, however, it can have a positive effect on the total photosynthetic production by allowing a higher productive LAI to be maintained; (d) penumbra, on the other hand, increased the rate of canopy photosynthesis by as much as 40% for moderate values of the LAI.  相似文献

Abstract. The influence of leaf age, total leaf area and its dispersion in space on canopy photosynthesis were studied using microswards of red clover ( Trifolium pratense L.) which were established in the greenhouse. Two varieties, Renova (flowering) and Molstad (non-flowering), were sown in separate plastic boxes at densities of 225, 400 and 625 plants per m2.
Vertical distribution of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), leaf area, leaf age and 14CO2-fixation were determined periodically. Net photosynthesis and dark respiration of canopies were measured. Maximum photosynthetic capacity of individual leaves was measured on plants taken from the intact canopy or from plants where shading of the growing leaves had been prevented.
Net photosynthetic rate of canopies increased linearly with leaf area index (LAI) up to an LAI of 3.5 and then declined at higher LAI, independent of variety and sowing density. Below the optimum LAI, net photosynthesis depended mainly on interception of PAR. Decrease in canopy photosynthesis above the optimum LAI was due to a higher proportion of old leaves with decreased photosynthetic capacity, and not to an increase in respiring plant parts. It is concluded that LAI and position of leaf age categories in the canopy are more important than vertical distribution of leaf area in determining canopy photosynthesis of red clover.  相似文献

Development of the Monsi-Saeki theory on canopy structure and function   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
Hirose T 《Annals of botany》2005,95(3):483-494
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Monsi and Saeki (1953) published the first mathematical model of canopy photosynthesis that was based on the light attenuation within a canopy and a light response of leaf photosynthesis. This paper reviews the evolution and development of their theory. SCOPE: Monsi and Saeki showed that under full light conditions, canopy photosynthesis is maximized at a high leaf area index (LAI, total leaf area per unit ground area) with vertically inclined leaves, while under low light conditions, it is at a low LAI with horizontal leaves. They suggested that actual plants develop a stand structure to maximize canopy photosynthesis. Combination of the Monsi-Saeki model with the cost-benefit hypothesis in resource use led to a new canopy photosynthesis model, where leaf nitrogen distribution and associated photosynthetic capacity were taken into account. The gradient of leaf nitrogen in a canopy was shown to be a direct response to the gradient of light. This response enables plants to use light and nitrogen efficiently, two resources whose supply is limited in the natural environment. CONCLUSION: The canopy photosynthesis model stimulated studies to scale-up from chloroplast biochemistry to canopy carbon gain and to analyse the resource-use strategy of species and individuals growing at different light and nitrogen availabilities. Canopy photosynthesis models are useful to analyse the size structure of populations in plant communities and to predict the structure and function of future terrestrial ecosystems.

Nitrogen (N) addition typically increases overall plant growth, but the nature of this response depends upon patterns of plant nitrogen allocation that vary throughout the growing season and depend upon canopy position. In this study seasonal variations in leaf traits were investigated across a canopy profile in Miscanthus (Miscanthus × giganteus) under two N treatments (0 and 224 kg ha?1) to determine whether the growth response of Miscanthus to N fertilization was related to the response of photosynthetic capacity and nitrogen allocation. Miscanthus yielded 24.1 Mg ha?1 in fertilized plots, a 40% increase compared to control plots. Photosynthetic properties, such as net photosynthesis (A), maximum rate of rubisco carboxylation (Vcmax), stomatal conductance (gs) and PSII efficiency (Fv'/Fm'), all decreased significantly from the top of the canopy to the bottom, but were not affected by N fertilization. N fertilization increased specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf area index (LAI). Leaf N concentration in different canopy layers was increased by N fertilization and the distribution of N concentration within canopy followed irradiance gradients. These results show that the positive effect of N fertilization on the yield of Miscanthus was unrelated to changes in photosynthetic rates but was achieved mainly by increased canopy leaf area. Vertical measurements through the canopy demonstrated that Miscanthus adapted to the light environment by adjusting leaf morphological and biochemical properties independent of nitrogen treatments. GPP estimated using big leaf and multilayer models varied considerably, suggesting a multilayer model in which Vcmax changes both through time and canopy layer could be adopted into agricultural models to more accurately predict biomass production in biomass crop ecosystems.  相似文献

To investigate differences in leaf structure, chlorophyll and nutrients on terminal branches of the understory tree Asimina triloba, the first (proximal) and the last (distal) leaves to develop in the spring were compared. Proximal leaf expansion was completed before the overstory canopy was fully closed but distal leaf expansion occurred during and after the development of the overstory canopy. Fully expanded proximal leaves were 76% smaller in area, were 18% thicker and had 36% more stomates per m of leaf area when compared to distal leaves. In addition, maximum stomatal conductance to water vapor was greater (150 vs. 120 mmol m−-2s−-1) and the minimum PPFD required for maximum conductance was higher (200 vs. 150 μmol m−-2s−-1) for the proximal leaves. Chlorophyll content was also greater for proximal leaves, but nitrogen and phosphorus contents were lower throughout the entire summer. Seasonal measurements indicated an increase in chlorophyll a content and reductions in nitrogen content throughout the summer growth period for leaves from both positions. The results suggest that distal and proximal leaves differed physiologically and that the measured differences were related to the changing irradiance environment during leaf development. The time of leaf expansion, as indicated by leaf position on the branch, may be an important consideration when examining the water and photosynthetic relations of understory trees.  相似文献
