Preparation of the activated carbons from sunflower oil cake by sulphuric acid activation with different impregnation ratios was carried out. Laboratory prepared activated carbons were used as adsorbents for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. Liquid-phase adsorption experiments were conducted and the maximum adsorption capacity of each activated carbon was determined. The effects of various process parameters i.e., temperature, pH, initial methylene blue concentration, contact time on the adsorption capacity of each activated carbon were investigated. The kinetic models for MB adsorption onto the activated carbons were studied. Langmuir isotherm showed better fit than Freundlich isotherm for all activated carbon samples. The rates of adsorption were found to conform to the pseudo-second-order kinetics with good correlation. The separation factor (R(L)) revealed the favorable nature of the isotherm of the MB activated carbon system.  相似文献

Varying the parameters such as agitation time, dye concentration, adsorbent dose, pH and temperature carried out the potential feasibility of thermally activated coir pith carbon prepared from coconut husk for removal of methylene blue. Greater percentage of dye was removed with decrease in the initial concentration of dye and increase in amount of adsorbent used. Kinetic study showed that the adsorption of dye on coir pith carbon was a gradual process. Lagergren first-order, second-order, intra particle diffusion model and Bangham were used to fit the experimental data. Equilibrium isotherms were analysed by Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubnin-Radushkevich, and Tempkin isotherm. The adsorption capacity was found to be 5.87 mg/g by Langmuir isotherm for the particle size 250-500 microm. The equilibrium time was found to be 30 and 60 min for 10 and 20 mg/L and 100 min for 30, 40 mg/L dye concentrations, respectively. A maximum removal of 97% was obtained at natural pH 6.9 for an adsorbent dose of 100 mg/50 mL and 100% removal was obtained for an adsorbent dose of 600 mg/50 mL of 10 mg/L dye concentration. The pH effect and desorption studies suggest that chemisorption might be the major mode of the adsorption process. The change in entropy (DeltaS0) and heat of adsorption (DeltaH0) of coir pith carbon was estimated as 117.20 J/mol/K and 30.88 kJ/mol, respectively. The high negative value of change in Gibbs free energy indicates the feasible and spontaneous adsorption of methylene blue on coir pith carbon.  相似文献

Defective coffee press cake, a residue from coffee oil biodiesel production, was evaluated as an adsorbent for removal of basic dyes (methylene blue – MB) from aqueous solutions. The adsorbent was prepared by microwave treatment, providing a significant reduction in processing time coupled to an increase in adsorption capacity in comparison to conventional carbonization in a muffle furnace. Batch adsorption tests were performed at 25 °C and the effects of particle size, contact time, adsorbent dosage and initial solution pH were investigated. Adsorption kinetics was better described by a second-order model. The experimental adsorption equilibrium data were fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich and Tempkin adsorption models, with Langmuir providing the best fit. The results presented in this study show that microwave activation presents great potential as an alternative method in the production of adsorbents.  相似文献

Chemically modified kenaf core fibres were prepared via esterification in the presence of citric acid (CA). The adsorption kinetics and isotherm studies were carried out under different conditions to examine the adsorption efficiency of CA-treated kenaf core fibres towards methylene blue (MB). The adsorption capacity of the kenaf core fibres increased significantly after the citric acid treatment. The values of the correlation coefficients indicated that the Langmuir isotherm fitted the experimental data better than the Freundlich isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity of the CA-treated kenaf core fibres was found to be 131.6 mg/g at 60 °C. Kinetic models, pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion, were employed to describe the adsorption mechanism. The kinetic data were found to fit pseudo-second-order model equation as compared to pseudo-first-order model. The adsorption of MB onto the CA-treated kenaf core fibres was spontaneous and endothermic.  相似文献

Activated carbon was prepared from an inexpensive and renewable carbon source, Typha orientalis, by H(3)PO(4) activation and then impregnated with different Mn salts and tested for its Neutral Red (NR) adsorption capacities. The amount of Mn impregnated in the activated carbon was influenced by the anion species. Impregnation with Mn decreased the surface area, changed the pore size and crystal structure, and introduced more acidic functional groups such as carboxyl, lactone and phenol groups. The optimum adsorption performance for all the activated carbons was obtained at pH 3.7, Mn-Carbon dose of 0.100g/100ml solution and contact time 4.5h. The adsorption isotherms fit the Langmuir isotherm equation. The kinetic data followed the pseudo-second-order model. The thermodynamic parameters indicated that the processes were spontaneous and endothermic. According to these results, the prepared Mn modified activated carbons are promising adsorbents for the removal of Neutral Red from wastewater.  相似文献

The adsorption kinetics of methylene blue on pyrolyzed petrified sediment (PPS) has been performed using a batch-adsorption technique. The effects of various experimental parameters, such as initial dye concentration, contact time, and temperature were investigated. The pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models were used to describe the kinetic data. The best correlation coefficient was obtained using the pseudo first-order kinetic model, which shows that the adsorption of methylene blue followed the pseudo-first-order rate expression and the rate constants were evaluated. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models were applied to describe the equilibrium isotherms and the isotherm constants were determined. It was found that the data fitted well to Langmuir and Freundlich models. The activation energy of adsorption was also evaluated for the adsorption of methylene blue onto pyrolyzed sediment. It was found about 8.5 kJ mol(-1). Thermodynamics parameters DeltaG(o), DeltaH(o), DeltaS(o) were calculated, indicating that this process can be spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorption enthalpy and entropy were found as 14-18.5 kJ mol(-1) and 52.8-67 J mol(-1) K(-1), respectively. The results obtained from the adsorption process using PPS as adsorbent was subjected to student's t-test.  相似文献

In this batch study, the adsorption of malathion by using granular activated carbon with different parameters due to the particle size, dosage of carbons, as well as the initial concentration of malathion was investigated. Batch tests were carried out to determine the potential and the effectiveness of granular activated carbon (GAC) in removal of pesticide in agricultural run off. The granular activated carbon; coconut shell and palm shells were used and analyzed as the adsorbent material. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms models were applied to describe the characteristics of adsorption behavior. Equilibrium data fitted well with the Langmuir model and Freundlich model with maximum adsorption capacity of 909.1 mg/g. The results indicate that the GAC could be used to effectively adsorb pesticide (malathion) from agricultural runoff.  相似文献

The retention profile of methylene blue from aqueous solutions onto the solid adsorbent date pits has been investigated in a batch system. The characterization and adsorption efficiency for methylene blue was evaluated using date pits. Fourier Transform Infra-Red, Scanning Electron Microscope, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis were performed to determine the characteristics of the material. The effect of contact time, initial dye concentration, adsorbent dosage, temperature, and solution pH were investigated. The adsorption was found to increase with increasing time, decreasing concentration of dye, decreasing temperature and increasing dosage up to equilibrium values which was 20 min, 25°C, and 0.1 g adsorbent, respectively. The adsorption was favorable at high and low pH (pH 3, pH 7). The adsorption equilibrium data were best fitted by Freundlich isotherm. The adsorption kinetics was found to follow the pseudo second order kinetic model. Thermodynamic parameters such as free energy, enthalpy, and entropy were calculated and found to be ?4.6 kJ/mole, ?7.9 kJ/mole, and ?11.8 kJ/mole, respectively. The thermodynamic parameters of the uptake of methylene blue onto the date pits indicated that, the process is exothermic and proceeds spontaneously at low temperature. A single stage batch adsorber was designed for adsorption of methylene blue by Date Pits based on optimum isotherm.  相似文献

Here, we report a simple, green and economic process for the synthesis of highly fluorescent carbon nanoparticles (CPs) through low‐temperature carbonization of a fruit waste, Citrus sinensis peel. This approach allows the large‐scale production of aqueous CPs dispersions without any additives and post‐treatment processes. The as‐prepared CPs were of small particle size, exhibited bright blue fluorescence under UV irradiation (λmax = 365 nm) with excellent colloidal stability in water. The chemical composition, structure and morphology of the as‐prepared CPs were analyzed using various spectroscopic techniques such as X‐ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and raman spectroscopy. The formed CPs were turbostratic in nature, with a large number of functional groups on the surface. We explored the adsorption characteristics of the formed CPs for wastewater treatment. Because of the negative surface of the CPs, as evident from the zeta value, it is possible to use them for selective adsorption of the cationic dye methylene blue from a mixture of dyes. The equilibrium adsorption isotherm revealed that the Langmuir model better describes the adsorption process than the Freundlich model. As‐prepared CPs rapidly adsorbed ~84% of the methylene blue within 1 min and can be regenerated and used repeatedly. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Low-cost activated carbon was prepared from Spartina alterniflora by phosphoric acid activation for the removal of Pb(II) from dilute aqueous solution. The effect of experimental parameters such as pH, initial concentration, contact time and temperature on the adsorption was studied. The obtained data were fitted with the Langmuir and Freundlich equations to describe the equilibrium isotherms. The kinetic data were fitted with the Lagergren-first-order, pseudo-second-order and Elovich models. It was found that pH played a major role in the adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity for Pb(II) on S. alterniflora activated carbon (SAAC) calculated from Langmuir isotherm was more than 99 mg g−1. The optimum pH range for the removal of Pb(II) was 4.8–5.6. The Freundlich isotherm model was found to best describe the experimental data. The kinetic rates were best fitted to the pseudo-second-order model. Thermodynamic study showed the adsorption was a spontaneous exothermic process.  相似文献

Low cost, locally available biomaterial was tested for its ability to remove reactive dyes from aqueous solution. Granules prepared from dried activated sludge (DAS) were utilized as a sorbent for the uptake of Rhodamine-B (Rh-B) dye. The effects of various experimental parameters (dye concentration, sludge concentrations, swelling, pretreatment and other factors) were investigated and optimal experimental conditions were ascertained. Nearly 15min was required for the equilibrium adsorption, and Rh-B dyes could be removed effectively. Dye removal performance of Rh-B and DAS increased with increasing concentrations. The acid pretreated biomass exhibited a slightly better biosorption capacity than alkali pretreated or non-pretreated biomass. The optimum swelling time for dye adsorption of the DAS within the swelling time range studied was 12h. Both the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models could describe the adsorption equilibrium of the reactive dye onto the activated sludge with the Langmuir isotherm showing the better agreement of the two. Second-order kinetic models confirmed the agreement.  相似文献

Two series of crosslinked starch polymers were tested for their ability to adsorb organic pollutants in aqueous solutions. The polymers were prepared by a crosslinking reaction of starch-enriched flour using epichlorohydrin as the crosslinking agent, without and in the presence of NH(4)OH. These polymers were used as sorbent materials for the removal of phenolic derivatives from wastewater. The influence of several parameters (kinetics, pH and polymer structure) on the sorption capacity was evaluated using the batch and the open column methods. Results of adsorption experiments showed that the starch-based materials exhibited high sorption capacities toward phenolic derivatives. The study of the kinetics of pollutant uptake revealed that the adsorbents presented a relatively fast rate of adsorption. The experimental data were examined using the Langmuir and Freundlich models and it was found that the Freundlich model appeared to fit the isotherm data better than the Langmuir model.  相似文献

In the current paper, a novel amphoteric straw-based adsorbent was prepared and applied to adsorb various dyes from aqueous solutions. The amphoteric adsorbent was proven effective in eliminating both cationic and anionic dyes (methylene blue and acid green 25), especially at corresponding favored pH conditions. The fundamental adsorption behavior of the adsorbent on removing various dyes was also investigated at different temperatures. The adsorption isotherms were all best-fitted by the Langmuir equation, whereas the adsorption kinetics was well-described by both the pseudo-second order model and the Elovich model. The experimental result revealed that the adsorption mechanism followed the monolayer chemical adsorption with an ion-exchange process.  相似文献

The powdered activated carbon prepared by phosphoric acid activation was significantly affected by the carbonization temperature and the weight ratio between raw material and phosphoric acid. With an activation time of 1h and an impregnation ratio of 1:1, the activated carbons with better adsorption capacity were obtained at 500 degrees C. A reduction in the adsorption capacity of the carbon product at higher acid content than this was observed, possibly due to the collapse of the micropore structure. The properties of the resulting activated carbon were: bulk density 0.251gcm(-3), ash content 4.88%, yield 26.2%, iodine adsorption 1043mgg(-1), methylene blue adsorption number 427mgg(-1), and BET surface area 1239m(2)g(-1).  相似文献

The influence of process variables in batch adsorption has been used to assess the removal of methylene blue dye from aqueous solution using pure and carbonized biomasses of water hyacinth and water spinach. Dried leaves of the water weeds were carbonized at temperature up to 750°C. The optimum removal of dye was achieved at pH 10, 30°C, and 55 min at a dye concentration of 10 mg/L. In an attempt to describe the adsorption process, the equilibrium isotherm for each adsorbent was determined using Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models. Maximum adsorption capacities based on the Langmuir model for pure and carbonized water hyacinth were (mg/g) 7.05 and 2.07, respectively, whereas those of pure and carbonized water spinach were 1.25 and 5.32, respectively. It was observed that the equilibrium data were well fit by both the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms as R 2 > .97. This study demonstrates that the two waterweeds are effective, environmentally friendly, and inexpensive biomaterials for the removal of color from industrial effluents.  相似文献

The objective of this work was to study the chemical and physical characterization of eggshell and eggshell membrane particles prepared from the hen eggshell waste. Under the characterization measurements investigated, it was found that the pore structures of the two biomaterials belong to a typical Type II, indicating that they should be basically characteristic of nonporous materials or materials with macropores or open voids. Further, the chemical composition of the resulting eggshell particle was strongly associated with the presence of carbonate minerals from the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra. In contrast to the resulting eggshell membrane particle, the presence of functional groups of amines and amides was observable because of its chemical composition of fibrous proteins. From the isotherm data of methylene blue at 25 degrees C, the Freundlich model yielded a somewhat better fit than the Langmuir model. The adsorption isotherms revealed the eggshell biosorbents could only uptake the basic dye of less than 1.0mg/g in aqueous medium, which was attributed to their poor pore properties.  相似文献

A novel activated nylon-based membrane was prepared and applied as an adsorbent for the removal of Cu2+ from aqueous solutions. It involved three stages: (i) deposition of a chitosan layer that functionalized the nylon membrane, (ii) cross-linking with epichlorohydrin to stabilize the polymer layer and enabling grafting, and (iii) iminodiacetic acid grafting. SEM and EDX techniques were used to characterize the composition of the membranes. Dynamic adsorption experiments on membranes were carried out at various pH values, contact times, adsorption dosages and initial metal concentrations to determine optimum membrane adsorption properties. The adsorption isotherm relating to Cu2+ fitted the Langmuir equation and an adsorption equilibrium constant and adsorption capacity of 2.345x10(-3)mg/ml and 10.794mg/g were determined, respectively. The experimental data was analyzed using two adsorption kinetic models, pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order with the latter system providing the best fit. Finally complete regeneration of the activated nylon membrane was possible using 100mmol/l Na2EDTA.  相似文献

The adsorption of a recalcitrant fluoroaromatic compound, fluorobenzene (FB), onto granular activated carbon (GAC) was evaluated. The respective isotherm was obtained and the Langmuir, Freundlich and Redlich-Peterson models were fitted to the experimental data, with the Redlich-Peterson model giving the best fitting. Freundlich model also provided a good fit but the Langmuir model could not adequately fit the experimental data, especially at high FB concentrations. Maximal adsorption capacity of FB onto GAC was found to be 388mg of FB per gram of GAC. The reversibility of the adsorption of FB onto GAC was investigated, both in the absence and presence of microorganisms. Abiotic desorption of FB occurred to a small extent (between 3% and 22%, for amounts of FB initially adsorbed to the GAC between 37 and 388mgg(-1)), and bioregeneration of GAC was shown to occur when the matrix was exposed to a FB degrading culture, with 58-80% of the adsorbed FB being biodegraded. A residual amount of FB showed not to be bioavailable, suggesting that part of the adsorbed FB may be irreversibly bound. The fraction of the non-bioavailable FB increased at higher amounts of adsorbed FB, from 19% to 33%. The results indicate that the GAC employed in this study has a good capacity to adsorb FB and that bioregeneration of this matrix is a feasible process.  相似文献
