INTRASPECIFIC NEST PARASITISM IN BIRDS   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
(1) The incidence of intraspecific nest parasitism in birds is reviewed. This phenomenon can be identified by various methods, ranging from biochemical examination of protein and enzyme polymorphisms to observations on the sequence of appearance of eggs in the nest as well as on the shape and colour of the eggs. The phenomenon has been reported for at least 53 species (Table I), mostly among precocial birds.
(2) The evidence suggests that the parasites are ( a ) young, unmated birds, ( b ) females which have lost their nests and (c) mated females which also lay in the nests of other females. High proportions of such females, and scarcity of suitable nest sites increase the rate of parasitism.
(3) Breeding success in parasitized nests is reduced by factors such as egg loss, desertion, inefficient incubation, reduced clutch size and late layings. The upper limit of the rate of intraspecific parasitism is discussed. It is argued that its incidence will be higher in the tropics than in extreme zones, for example, high latitudes and deserts, because there is higher synchronization of breeding in the latter, and increased predation in the former zones. Also, it will be more common in species which lay large clutches, such as precocial species.  相似文献

The reproductive efficiency, defined as the number of breeding recruits produced per egg laid; of intraspecific nest parasites; of hosts in parasitized nests; and of unparasitized nesting females, was measured for 14 years for lesser snow geese Anser caerulescens caerulescens nesting near Churchill, Manitoba, Canada. Relative efficiencies were 0.71–0.88, 0.91, and 1.0 for eggs of parasites, hosts, and unparasitized birds, respectively. Differences in the hatching probabilities of the three classes of eggs produced the efficiency differences. Parasitic success was limited by the parasites' failure to place more eggs than expected by chance into nests at the appropriate time relative to host incubation. Host nesting success was lower when more than one parasitic egg was added to the clutch. No differences in gosling survival and breeding recruitment probabilities were detected among any categories of goslings. Thus, hatching parasitic young are at no disadvantage relative to parental young, and there is no support for the hypothesis that increased success of host young at later stages of reproduction might offset negative effects at the egg stage. The hatching efficiency of parasitic eggs declined more rapidly than that of parental eggs as the parasitism rate increased. Efficiencies were similar when 3–4% of the eggs laid per year were parasitic, but relative parasitic efficiency was significantly lower when the parasitism rate was 8–9% or more. Using ancillary information and assumptions about the fecundity, viability, and behavioral flexibility of parasitic and parental females, we conclude that intraspecific nest parasitism could compete with nesting as a reproductive strategy in this population. The conditional use of parasitism by a large component of the population in certain years, however, combined with negative-frequency dependent success, limits the potential spread of a purely parasitic strategy in this population.  相似文献

In the initial stages of cell–cell interactions (spore germination and host penetration), the adelphoparasites Gardneriella tuberifera Kyl. and Gracilariophila oryzoides Setch. & Wilson form infection rhizoids that fuse directly with underlying host epidermal or cortical cells. In so doing, parasite nuclei and other organelles enter the cytoplasm of the host. The resulting heterokaryon may fuse with adjacent host cells either directly, via secondary pit connections, or by the dissolution or dislodgment of pit plugs from existing pit connections. The cell fusion events result in a heterokaryotic syncytium in which parasite nuclei replicate. In Gardneriella, formation of the syncytium induces surrounding host tissues to divide to form a photosynthetic callus. The internalized syncytium forms conjunctor and rhizoidal cells that fuse with host callus, eventually transforming the host callus into cells containing parasite nuclei. Gracilariophila does not induce surrounding host tissue to divide. Rather, division of the initial heterokaryotic tissue gives rise to the colorless mantle that protrudes from the host and forms reproductive structures. The heterokaryotic tissue also fuses with underlying host cells, thereby spreading parasite nuclei throughout adjacent host cells. In both these adelphoparasites, transformation of host cells by parasite nuclear invasion results in plastid dedifferentiation, an increase in mitochondria, autolysis of organelles, and accumulation of large amounts of floridean starch. The development and physiology of these parasites is similar to normal post-fertilization processes in the hosts that give rise to carposporophytes and suggests that these adelphoparasites may have originated from perturbations of developmental pathways involved in their host's post-fertilization development.  相似文献

采用逐步扩大范围的方法确定影响对象木 (Objectivetree) 的最佳竞争范围, 利用单木竞争指数的改进模型对太白红杉 (Larixchinensis) 种内和种间竞争强度进行了定量分析, 并讨论了不同竞争强度下太白红杉的形态变化。结果表明 :随对象木胸径的增大, 由于太白红杉种群自然稀疏过程中密度调节作用, 植株距离增加, 种内竞争强度降低 ;太白红杉主要分布于亚高山地段, 群落内其它物种较少, 个体普遍较小, 结果种间竞争相对较弱, 种内与种间竞争关系顺序为 :太白红杉 太白红杉 >巴山冷杉 (Abiesfargesii) 太白红杉 >牛皮桦 (Betulaplatyphylla) 太白红杉 >其它树种 太白红杉 ;竞争强度和对象木胸径的关系服从幂函数关系 (CI =AD-B), 当太白红杉胸径达到 35cm以上时, 竞争强度几乎没有变化, 所得的预测模型能很好地预测太白红杉种内和种间的竞争强度 ;不同竞争强度下, 太白红杉主茎各层的分枝角度、总分枝数、当年生枝条长、平均枝长和活枝数均表现出显著的差异。表明采用逐步扩大范围的方法能有效地确定竞争木范围, 较好地反应太白红杉种内和种间的竞争关系。同时, 太白红杉通过自身形态变化, 提高了对光的截获能力和对不同竞争强度的适应能力。  相似文献

Intraspecific variations in the reproduction of individual ramets and monospecific patches of the understory herb Arnica cordifolia Hook. were compared with variations in photosynthesis and understory light conditions. Ramets and patches were compared from three microhabitats (open, intermediate, and shaded) that differed in daily integrated irradiance. Individual ramets from open microhabitats (> 12 MJ m−2 d−1) had 23% more total dry wt and produced twice as many seeds, when compared to ramets from shaded locations (< 5 MJ m−2 d−1). In addition, monospecific patches from open locations were 63% more dense, and estimates of seed and vegetative patch reproductive effort were 4 and 2 times greater, respectively, when compared to shaded plant patches. For all measurements, ramets and patches from intermediate understory locations (6–10 MJ m−2 d−1) were intermediate in reproductive capacity between those of open and shaded locations. In addition, A. cordifolia seeds from open microhabitats germinated significantly better (45%) than either intermediate or shaded location seeds under high light and only seeds from shaded microhabitats germinated (14%) in the dark. Compared to shaded location plants, the greater total dry weight and seed production of individual ramets and the greater estimated reproductive effort of patches from open locations corresponded to a greater maximum photosynthetic rate (16.9 μmoles m−2 s−1) and daily carbon gain (12.2 g m−2 d−1). Possibly, a greater photosynthetic capacity may make more photosynthetic resources available for reproduction by A. cordifolia plants in open locations. Thus, intraspecific variation in physiology may contribute to intraspecific variation in reproduction.  相似文献

Seeds collected from five Amaranthus dubius plants of the same population were weighed and tested in continuous light or darkness at three temperatures in controlled conditions. Different seed families differed in weight, germination percentages and rate, and responded differently to an increase in temperature from 25 to 38 C. Plants derived from these seed families and grown outdoors, either singly or in mixtures, differed in several growth characteristics and in time to flowering. Significant interactions between growth characteristics and growth conditions, as measured with a two-way ANOVA, suggest that plants derived from different individuals differ in their competitive ability. The progeny of different individuals may thus be favored in different environmental conditions.  相似文献

We study the evolution of higher levels of dominance as a response to negative frequency-dependent selection. In contrast to previous studies, we focus on the effect of assortative mating on the evolution of dominance under frequency-dependent intraspecific competition. We analyze a two-locus two-allele model, in which the primary locus has a major effect on a quantitative trait that is under a mixture of frequency-independent stabilizing selection, density-dependent selection, and frequency-dependent selection caused by intraspecific competition for a continuum of resources. The second (modifier) locus determines the degree of dominance at the trait level. Additionally, the population mates assortatively with respect to similarities in the ecological trait. Our analysis shows that the parameter region in which dominance can be established decreases if small levels of assortment are introduced. In addition, the degree of dominance that can be established also decreases. In contrast, if assortment is intermediate, sexual selection for extreme types can be established, which leads to evolution of higher levels of dominance than under random mating. For modifiers with large effects, intermediate levels of assortative mating are most favorable for the evolution of dominance. For large modifiers, the speed of fixation can even be higher for intermediate levels of assortative mating than for random mating.  相似文献

The fine structure of the sarcoplasmic reticulum and the transverse tubular system of the femoral muscle of the cockroach, Leucophaea maderae, was studied after prefixation in glutaraldehyde, postfixation in osmium tetroxide, and embedding in Epon. The sarcoplasmic reticulum in this muscle reveals features not previously reported. The sarcoplasmic reticulum is abundant, consisting mainly of a fenestrated envelope which surrounds each myofibril at all levels in the sarcomere. This sarcoplasmic reticulum envelope is continuous transversally as well as longitudinally along the myofibrils. Dyadic junctions are formed by a single T system element which contacts the unfenestrated sarcoplasmic reticulum of adjacent myofibrils in an alternating manner at the ends of the A band. At the dyads, regularly spaced thickenings of the sarcoplasmic reticulum membranes bordering the dyadic spaces are noted. These thickenings, however, do not contact the T tubule membrane. Typical dyadic contacts also are seen between the cell surface membrane and sarcoplasmic reticulum. Z line-like material is seen in contact with the membranes of the cell surface and longitudinal branches of the T systems.  相似文献

We consider worker-controlled sex investments in eusocial Hymenoptera (ants in particular) and assume that relatedness asymmetry is variable among colonies and that workers are able to assess the relatedness asymmetry in their own colony. We predict that such “assessing” workers should maximize their inclusive fitness by specializing in the production of the sex to which they are relatively most related, i.e., colonies whose workers have a relatedness asymmetry below the population average should specialize in males, whereas colonies whose workers have a higher than average relatedness asymmetry should specialize in making females. Our argument yields the expectation that colony sex ratios will be bimodally distributed in ant populations where relatedness asymmetry is variable owing to multiple mating, worker reproduction, and/or polygyny. No such bimodality is expected, however, in ant species where relatedness asymmetry is known to be constant, or in cases where relatedness asymmetry is supposed to be irrelevant due to allospecific brood rearing under queen control, as in the slave-making ants. Comparative data on colony sex ratios in ants are reviewed to test the predictions. The data partly support our contentions, but are as yet insufficient to be considered as decisive evidence.  相似文献

Sixteen natural stands of Abies lasiocarpa (Hook.) Nutt. were sampled from British Columbia and Washington to investigate patterns of intraspecific variation in this species and to evaluate Hunt and von Rudloff's recognition of two species of subalpine fir. Principal components analysis and canonical variates analysis were performed separately on seed-cone data, needle morphology data, and needle flavonoid data. Analysis of cone data indicated no geographical patterning of populations, but eastern and western groups of populations were segregated in both the needle morphology and flavonoid analyses. With the exception of the Vancouver Island population, three geographic groups were discerned based on their needle morphology: 1) populations from the coastal mountains of British Columbia, 2) those from the Cascade Mountains of Washington, and 3) those from the eastern interior of British Columbia. Although the Vancouver Island population was grouped with the interior British Columbia populations based on needle morphology, it was similar to the other coastal populations based on flavonoid data. These inconsistent results among the three different types of taxonomic evidence underscore the need to consider a variety of traits when drawing taxonomic conclusions in Abies. Although the delineation of eastern and western groups is not wholly consistent for the different data sets, the results support recognition of coastal and interior varieties of subalpine fir.  相似文献

Bryophytes are often viewed as slowly evolving with little genetic variation within and among populations. A study of heavy-metal tolerance was initiated to test the capacity of bryophytes to undergo genetic differentiation in response to natural selection. Tolerance of Funaria hygrometrica to copper and zinc was greater in populations that originated on soil with high concentrations of these metals. Protonemal growth was more inhibited by the metals than was germination, and copper was more toxic than zinc. Zinc and copper tolerances were correlated, but so were the zinc and copper concentrations of native substrates. The pattern of population differentiation for heavy-metal tolerance in this species is much like that of flowering plants. Five populations of Physcomitrium pyriforme, which does not occur on metal-contaminated soil, were all highly tolerant of zinc but extremely intolerant of copper. This species seems to have an inherent tolerance to the former. Significant variation in tolerance to copper and zinc occurred among populations, but tolerance did not correlate with metal contents in native substrates. This pattern differs from that of flowering plants. Normal populations of species that colonize contaminated sites tended to be more tolerant than populations of species that do not colonize such sites. The extensive population differentiation in Funaria hygrometrica augments the evidence from electrophoretic data that there is genetic variation among populations of mosses and liverworts.  相似文献
