To clarify 24-hr variations in rat thyroid follicular cells under physiological conditions, their subcellular structures were examined at six evenly spaced times during 24 hr by using a morphometric technique. The volume, surface, and numerical densities of subcellular structures varied distinctly over each 24-hr period, with a bimodal pattern. The cellular and nuclear volumes varied also bimodally over 24 hr. A decrease in the surface density of the apical plasmalemma at 1200 and 0000 hr coincided with an increase in volume density of cytoplasmic granules representing colloid droplets and dense bodies. Most granules (colloid droplets) appearing at these times were reduced in electron density. At other times, especially at 1600 and 0400 hr, morphometric parameters of rough endoplasmic reticulum (rER), Golgi complex, and subapical vesicles were prominently increased, although values for rER did not peak at 1600 hr. At these times, the volume densities of cytoplasmic granules, most of which were heterogeneous and of homogeneous electron density, were decreased. These findings coincided with immediate and subsequent reactions of follicular cells after injection of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). From the evidence, it seems likely that variations in follicular cells over a 24-hr period reflect variations in blood TSH concentration. The total membrane areas of membrane components in follicular cells were calculated from the morphometric measurements. These areas fluctuated unimodally during 24 hr over a 65% range. This suggests that the membranes in follicular cells are subjected to cyclic degradation and regeneration during each 24-hr period.  相似文献

Summary Immunocytochemical localization of cathepsin B and thyroxine (T4) in follicular cells of the rat thyroid gland and plasma concentrations of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) were examined at six evenly spaced times over 24 h. By light- and electron microscopy, immunodeposits for cathepsin B were localized in cytoplasmic granules of various sizes, whereas those for T4 were detected mainly in larger granules of the cells and in the colloid lumen. The size and location of cytoplasmic granules showing immunoreactivity for cathepsin B and T4 in the cells varied over 24 h, corresponding to a change in plasma TSH concentrations. These immunopositive large granules appeared in the apical cytoplasm at 12.00 h, when the level of TSH was highest. At 20.00 h when the level of TSH was lowest, T4-positive granules almost disappeared, and cathepsin B-positive small granules were abundantly seen in the basal region. From 00.00 h to 08.00 h, these positive granules changed in the same manner as those seen from 12.00 h to 20.00 h, associated with an increase in plasma TSH levels. These results suggest that newly formed colloid droplets migrate from the apical to the basal regions. Cathepsin B may play a role not only in the degradation of thyroglobulin but in the maturation of thyroid hormones during the migration of the granules.  相似文献

Droplets which stain like colloid occur in the cytoplasm of the thyroid follicular epithelium of the rat following stimulation of the gland by thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). The occurrence of droplets was remarkably reduced when the lumen became depleted of colloid. Acid phosphatase and esterase were localized in the thyroid droplets and, in addition, in granules largely around the nucleus. Stimulation by TSH resulted in an increase in the number of droplets containing enzyme. Twenty-four hours after hypophysectomy, enzyme-associated granules were localized at the basal end of the cell and droplets were absent. Intravenous injection of TSH resulted in formation of droplets at the apical end of the cell and migration of enzyme-associated granules toward the apical end of the cell. The droplets were first observed approximately 10 minutes after TSH administration and at this time did not appear to contain enzyme. Within 15 minutes many droplets contained enzyme. The granules were largely localized near the nucleus on its apical side 30 minutes after a dose of 25 milliunits of TSH, but were less well localized following one-tenth this dose. These results indicate that the epithelial cell of the thyroid gland contains preformed hydrolytic enzymes associated with granules (lysosomes). When the gland is stimulated by TSH, droplets are formed from colloid derived from the lumen (phagosomes), and hydrolytic enzymes are transferred from granules to the droplets. The droplets may be intracellular organelles for hydrolysis of colloid and liberation of thyroxine prior to the release of thyroxine into the blood.  相似文献

Summary The ultrastructure of the visceral yolk sac (VYS) of the rat embryo at day 9.5 of gestation was examined after fixation with either Karnovsky's glutaraldehyde-paraformaldehyde solution or malachite green-containing glutaraldehyde (MGA) solution. Fixation with MGA retained homogeneously electron-dense droplets in the cytoplasm and the nucleus of endodermal cells, both of which were lost in the specimens prepared by Karnovsky's fixation method. The cytoplasmic MGA-positive droplets were frequently associated with other cytoplasmic organelles such as rough endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria and membrane-delineated inclusion bodies, but these cytoplasmic organelles never incorporated MGA-positive materials, whereas Golgi apparatus contained intracisternal MGA-positive droplets. Extracellular MGA-positive droplets were also encountered at the apical surface of endodermal cells and in the intercellular space between endodermal cells and the underlying mesodermal cells. These MGA-positive droplets were considered to be lipid in nature, and their origin in the endodermal cells of VYS is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Electron microscopical studies were made of the thyroid gland of an adult lamprey, Lampetra japonica, in the upstream migration period. The thyroid consists of many usual follicles containing the colloid in their lumina, and a large parafollicle without colloid. The paper concerns only the usual follicle. The follicle cells found in the usual follicle wall are classified into three types; 1. a non-ciliated taller cell, 2. a ciliated taller one, and 3. a non-ciliated cuboidal one. From their cytoplasmic fine structure, it is considered that all these cells are essentially identical and differences among them are due to their functional state. All these type cells are characterized by irregularly developed interdigitations and aggregates of tonofilaments throughout the cytoplasm, especially in the perinuclear region. Although the rough-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi apparatus are fairly well developed in the first and second type cells, the cisternae are not so large-vacuolated but flattened, and the cytoplasm is more compact as compared with that of the higher vertebrate. In the third type cell, the cytomembranes are poorly developed.Large dense inclusion-bodies consisting of heterogeneously dense materials, of lamellar structures, and of less dense vacuoles, which are found often in taller follicle cells, are also characteristic for the lamprey thyroid. The body which might be intimately related to the Golgi apparatus is considered to be a kind of lysosomes and it perhaps corresponds to the yellow pigment observed by light microscopy. In the apical part of the cytoplasm in taller cells, there are three kinds of granules or vesicles; numerous small vesicles considered to be derived from the Golgi apparatus, a few small dense granules which seem to originate from the Golgi region, and a few large less-dense granules. In the third type cell, the cytomembranes are not so well developed as those of the first and second type cells. The large heterogeneously dense bodies and the cytoplasmic granules are very few in number.Around the follicle of the lamprey thyroid, there are a dense basement membrane and a relatively compact connective tissue with few blood capillaries. Characteristic fat cells are found in the connective tissue.  相似文献

The principal and accessory submandibular glands of the common vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus, were examined by electron microscopy. The secretory endpieces of the principal gland consist of serous tubules capped at their blind ends by mucous acini. The substructure of the mucous droplets and of the serous granules varies according to the mode of specimen preparation. With ferrocyanide-reduced osmium postfixation, the mucous droplets are moderately dense and homogeneous; the serous granules often have a polygonal outline and their matrix shows clefts in which bundles of wavy filaments may be present. With conventional osmium postfixation, the mucous droplets have a finely fibrillogranular matrix; the serous granules are homogeneously dense. Mucous cells additionally contain many small, dense granules that may be small peroxisomes, as well as aggregates of 10-nm cytofilaments. Intercalated duct cells are relatively unspecialized. Striated ducts are characterized by highly folded basal membranes and vertically oriented mitochondria. Luminal surfaces of all of the secretory and duct cells have numerous microvilli, culminating in a brush borderlike affair in the striated ducts. The accessory gland has secretory endpieces consisting of mucous acini with small mucous demilunes. The acinar mucous droplets contain a large dense region; the lucent portion has punctate densities. Demilune mucous droplets lack a dense region and consist of a light matrix in which fine fibrillogranular material is suspended. A ring of junctional cells, identifiable by their complex secretory granules, separates the mucous acini from the intercalated ducts. The intercalated ducts lack specialized structure. Striated ducts resemble their counterparts in the principal gland. As in the principal gland, all luminal surfaces are covered by an array of microvilli. At least some of the features of the principal and accessory submandibular glands of the vampire bat may be structural adaptations to the exigencies posed by the exclusively sanguivorous diet of these animals and its attendant extremely high intake of sodium chloride.  相似文献

The nonciliated cells lining the ductuli efferentes presented three distinct cytoplasmic regions. The apical region contained, in addition to cisternae of endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria, two distinct membranous elements. The tubulovesicular system consisted of dilated tubules connected to the apical plasma membrane and subjacent distended vesicular profiles. The apical tubules, not connected to the cell surface, consisted of numerous densely stained tubules of small size which contain a compact, finely granulated material. The supranuclear region, in addition to a Golgi apparatus and ER cisternae, contained dilated vacuoles, pale and dense multivesicular bodies, as well as numerous dense granules identified cytochemically as lysosomes. The basal region contained the nucleus and many lipid droplets. The endocytic activity of these cells was investigated using cationic ferritin (CF) and concanavalin-A-ferritin (Con-A-ferritin) as markers of adsorptive endocytosis; and native ferritin (NF), concanavalin-A-ferritin in the presence of alpha-methyl mannoside, and horseradish peroxidase or albumin bound to colloidal gold for demonstrating fluid-phase endocytosis. These tracers were injected separately into the rete testis, and animals were sacrificed at various time intervals after injection. At 1 min, CF or Con-A-ferritin were seen bound to the apical plasma membrane, to the membrane of microvilli, and to the membrane delimiting elements of the tubulovesicular system. Between 2 and 5 min, these tracers accumulated in the densely stained apical tubules and at 15 min in the dilated vacuoles. Between 30 min and 1 hr, the tracers appeared in multivesicular bodies of progressively increasing density, whereas at 2 hr and later time intervals, many dense lysosomal elements became labeled. The tracers for fluid-phase endocytosis showed a distribution similar to that for CF or Con-A-ferritin except that they did not bind to the apical plasma membrane, microvilli, or membrane delimiting the tubulovesicular system. At no time interval were any of the tracers observed in the abluminal spaces. Thus, the nonciliated epithelial cells of the ductuli efferentes are actively involved in fluid-phase and adsorptive endocytosis, both of which result in the sequestration of endocytosed material within the lysosomal apparatus of the cell.  相似文献

Summary An electron microscopical study of the epithelium of the uterine tube was carried out in the newborn. Among the epithelial cells at least two morphologically well defined types can be distinguished: ciliated and non-ciliated cells. The ultrastructure of the cilia and related structures corresponds to what has been described by other authors in ciliated cells of various organs and of different species. Near the basal bodies of the cilia there is a concentration of vesicular mitochondria, which is thought to be evidence of a high metabolic activity in this region of the cell. Large opaque granules in the supranuclear zone of the ciliated cells are, it is suggested, paraplasmatic inclusions, perhaps supporting material for the ciliokinetic processes. There was no evidence of a secretory function of the ciliated cells.Among the non-ciliated cells, which in general show a straight lined luminal border with few microvilli, there are some cells containing dense granules, which are distributed throughout the cytoplasm and concentrated in the luminar side of the cell. The apical parts of these cells are protruding and sometimes digitated or branched; they contain accumulated granular materials and are separated from the rest of the cell after the formation of an intracellular plasmalemma. A similar detachment was found in an other cell type, but here the protruded apical parts of the cells are edematous and do not contain any visible secretory materials. It is uncertain if the detached cytoplasmic substances form a part of a specific secretory product; there are no secretory granules within the cytoplasm. On the contrary, the detachment of cytoplasmic parts may only accompany the excessive proliferation of cells which takes place during this period of growth.  相似文献

Small intestinal crypt epithelium obtained from normal fasting humans by peroral biopsy of the mucosa was studied with the electron microscope. Paneth cells were identified at the base of the crypts by their elaborate highly organized endoplasmic reticulum, large secretory granules, and small lysosome-like dense bodies within the cytoplasm. Undifferentiated cells were characterized by smaller cytoplasmic membrane-bounded granules which were presumed to be secretory in nature, a less elaborate endoplasmic reticulum, many unattached ribosomes and, in some cells, the presence of glycogen. Some undifferentiated cells at the base of the crypts contained lobulated nuclei and striking paranuclear accumulations of mitochondria. Membrane-bounded cytoplasmic fragments, probably originating from undifferentiated and Paneth cells, were frequently apparent within crypt lumina. Of the goblet cells, some were seen actively secreting mucus. In these, apical mucus appeared to exude into the crypt lumen between gaps in the microvilli. The membrane formerly surrounding the apical mucus appeared to fuse with and become part of the plasma membrane of the cell, suggesting a merocrine secretory mechanism. Enterochromaffin cells were identified by their location between the basal regions of other crypt cells and by their unique intracytoplasmic granules.  相似文献

Spermiogenesis of Bothriocephalus scorpii (Cestoda, Pseudophyllidea) includes an orthogonal development of two flagella, followed by a flagellar rotation and a proximo-distal fusion with the median cytoplasmic process. The fusion occurs at the level of four attachment zones. The presence of dense material in the apical region of the differentiation zone in the early stage of spermiogenesis appears to be a characteristic feature for the Pseudophyllidea. The mature spermatozoon possesses two axonemes of 9+"1" pattern of the Trepaxonemata, nucleus, cortical microtubules, electron-dense granules and crested body. The anterior part of the gamete exhibits a centriole surrounded by electron-dense tubular structures arranged as incomplete spiral. When the crested body disappears, the electron-dense tubular structures are arranged into a ring encircling the axoneme. The electron-dense tubular structures and their arrangement appear to be a specific feature for the clade "Bothriocephalidea". The organization of the posterior extremity of the gamete with the nucleus is described for the first time in the Pseudophyllidea.  相似文献

Shortly after the administration of 1/40 unit thyrotropin to rats, 24 hours post-hypophysectomy, the following sequence of changes has been observed within thyroid follicular epithelial cells: (1) the appearance of apical cell surface activity consisting of pseudopods projecting into the follicular lumen; (2) apparent phagocytic engulfment of colloid droplets lacking indications of acid phosphatase activity; (3) close association and probable fusion of newly formed colloid droplets and dense granules, the latter cytochemically positive for acid phosphatase activity; (4) the appearance of presumptive acid phosphatase activity within colloid droplets; and, (5) further colloid droplet changes, viz., basipetal migration and decrease in size, accompanied by an increase in density and in demonstrable acid phosphatase activity. These changes appeared to represent the resorption and degradation of follicular colloid. Comparable results were obtained using intact and more heavily stimulated animals. Colloid biosynthesis was tentatively visualized in these cells as a separate mechanism involving small vesicles prominent in the Golgi region and beneath the apical plasma membrane of some, but not all, thyroid follicular cells in each specimen.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of lipofuscin granules in neuroglial cells of the optic nerve of the Formosan Rock-Monkey was investigated by electron microscopy. In the cytoplasm of astroglial cells, numerous irregular lipofuscin granules were characterized by the presence of large lipid droplets, small electron-dense pigment granules, and some lamellar structures. The lipofuscin granules of the oligodendroglial cells were composed largely of dense, coarse pigment granules, multilinear structures, and a few small lipid droplets. The lipofuscin granules in microglial cells were characterized by numerous lipid droplets in various sizes, small electron-dense pigment granules, and prominent lamellar structures. It was reported that the lipofuscin granules are wear-and-tear materials and products from the cells in lower functional activity. However, our observations suggest that the presence of lipofuscin granules in the neuroglial cells of the optic nerve is likely a characteristic product of active phagocytosis.  相似文献

Morphology of the bovine epididymis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The epididymis of the bull was divided into six regions, and morphological differences between regions were studied. The epithelium of all regions contained four cell types: principal and basal epithelial cells, and intraepithelial lymphocytes and macrophages. The epithelium of regions II-V also contained a few apical cells. Principal cells of all regions possessed an endocytotic apparatus including stereocilia underlain by canaliculi, coated vesicles, and subapical vacuoles (up to 1 micron in diameter); however, large vacuoles with a flocculent content and multivesicular bodies (up to 5 microns in diameter) were most numerous in regions II, III, and IV. The unique features of principal cells of region I were the presence of well-developed Golgi bodies, few lipid droplets, and whorls of smooth endoplasmic reticulum in the supranuclear cytoplasm. Numerous mitochondria, distended cisternae of rough endoplasmic reticulum, and dense granules characterized the infranuclear cytoplasm of the principal cells of regions II-VI; however, these features were more developed in region V. Apical cells were characterized by the apical location of the nucleus, many mitochondria in the apical cytoplasm, and few microvilli at the luminal border. Basal cells with few cytoplasmic lipid droplets were present throughout the length of the epididymis but appeared more numerous in region V. Intraepithelial lymphocytes were present at all levels of the epithelium but were never seen in the lumen. Intraepithelial macrophages containing heterogeneous granules, eccentric nuclei, and pseudopods were invariably seen near the basal area of the epithelium in all regions. These observations are discussed in an effort to define the role of each cell type in the epididymal epithelium.  相似文献

The cardiac and pyloric glands in the gastric mucosa of the South African hedgehog, Atelerix frontalis, are described. The cardiac area of the stomach contains proper cardiac glands and lacks undifferentiated fundic glands. The cardiac glands are simple tubular, coiled, and lined with columnar cells ultrastructurally similar to those of the gastric surface epithelium. Secretory granules with varying electron densities fill the apical cytoplasm of these cells. In contrast to other mammals, these glands lack mucous neck cells. The neck of the pyloric glands contains only a single cell type, whereas the basal regions of these glands contain “light” and “dark” cells. The secretory granules in the “dark” cells and the pyloric neck cells have a moderate electron density and often contain an electron dense core. An electron-lucent cytoplasm with numerous polysomes is characteristic of the “light” cells. Some “light” cells contain electron-dense granules in the apical cytoplasm. The presence of only neutral mucins in the cardiac gland cells denotes the absence of mucous neck cells. The acidic mucins within the pyloric neck cells seem to indicate that these cells are mucous neck cells, whereas the neutral mucins within the basally located pyloric gland cells show at least a partial functional difference from the pyloric neck cells. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

This paper reports a study by phase contrast and electron microscopy of changes observed in the thyroid gland of the rat at 1, 2, 12, and 24 hours following an injection of thyrotrophic hormone. Examination by phase contrast microscopy reveals that follicular cells contain numerous colloid droplets 1 and 2 hours after injection. By 12 and 24 hours, the colloid droplets are no longer present, and individual follicles appear to be subdividing into smaller units. The droplets are assumed to contain newly synthesized colloid, and their development was studied by electron microscopy. During the period of active secretion, increase in number of the Golgi vesicles leads to enlargement of this organelle. At its periphery small colloid droplets appear to form from large Golgi vesicles. As they form, their content becomes more adielectronic, and fine dense particles less than 75 A in diameter appear in their matrix. Small- and medium-sized droplets lying in the apical region of the cell contain numerous dense particles scattered in their moderately adielectronic content. Large, mature droplets in the same region have a relatively dielectronic content resembling follicular colloid and no longer contain dense particles. The follicular cells appear to utilize apical pseudopodia to release the content of mature droplets into the follicular lumen. Other droplet-like inclusions occur in follicular cells, but they do not seem to be directly concerned with secretion.  相似文献

Filipin, a polyene antibiotic, was used to detect cholesterol in thyroid membranes in vivo and in culture during TSH stimulation. We found that apical and basolateral plasma membranes were heterogeneously modified by filipin which induced abundant lesions in apical membranes, whereas Golgi apparatus, endoplasmic reticulum, nuclear membranes were unmodified. Small apical vesicles and colloid droplets were generally highly enriched in these complexes, suggesting a high cholesterol concentration in their membranes. Pseudopod membranes, known to be highly specialized domains in the apical plasma membrane, appeared enriched in cholesterol. Consequently, we suggest that an increased cholesterol content may be involved in the stabilization of thyroid membranes during endocytotic processes.  相似文献

Electron microscopic observations of an originally established mouse mastocytoma cell line (BSP-MST-2) revealed that the cytoplasm of many of the MST-2 cells contained small and low osmiophilic granules and a few mature electron-dense granules. Fluorescent- and immuno-histochemical examinations also suggested the immaturity of granules as the cytoplasmic reaction for serotonin (5-HT) was weak. Induction of further maturation of granules was investigated by administration of various chemical agents. Among the chemicals examined, sodium butyrate and hydrocortisone were effective. In the presence of 1 mM sodium butyrate for 24 h, the cytoplasmic granules contained an abundant dense matrix. MST-2 cells incubated with hydrocortisone at 5 micrograms/ml for 24 h showed a somewhat different granulopoietic pattern from those incubated with sodium butyrate, including numerous electron-dense progranules. Fluorescent- and immuno-histochemical studies showed increased reactions of cytoplasmic 5-HT of both butyrate- and hydrocortisone-treated MST-2 cells. The specificity of these morphological and cytochemical changes was confirmed by treatment with reserpine, a drug which depletes cellular 5-HT; electron-dense materials were virtually diminished and cytochemical reactions were significantly decreased. The mode of induced production of 5-HT in mastocytoma granules is discussed, in relation to mastocyte differentiation.  相似文献

The fine structure of the parvocellular tuberal nuclei and that of the ependyma bordering the third ventricle in the basal hypothalamus of the White-crowned Sparrow, Zonotrichia leucophrys gambelii, have been investigated. Photoperiodically stimulated birds have been compared with birds held on short days. The perikarya of the neurons of the basal infundibular (tuberal) nucleus, and in part, of the more dorsal layers, contain dense-cored granules (1000-1500 A). The granules in the anterior part of the nucleus are somewhat larger than those of the posterior part. The synapses and the synaptic relationships of these cells are described. The single-layered ependyma of the third ventricle in the basal hypothalamus may be divided into the dorsal typical ependyma, the ventrolateral "glandular" ependyma, and the ventral "glandular" ependyma. Cells of the ventral ependyma lack apical cilia but bear a few microvillous processes. They have well-developed Golgi apparatus, conspicuous polysomes, and frequently dense, irregularly-shaped granules. Basal cytoplasmic processes extend ventrally to the outer surface of the median eminence. Photoperiodic stimulation appears to increase the numbers of apical protrusions of the cells in the ventral glandular ependyma and to cause an increase in size of the nerve cells of the basal infundibular nucleus.  相似文献

Histological and ultrastructural investigations of the stomach of the catfish Hypostomus plecostomus show that its structure is different from that typical of the stomachs of other teleostean fishes: the wall is thin and transparent, while the mucosal layer is smooth and devoid of folds. The epithelium lining the whole internal surface of the stomach consists of several types of cells, the most prominent being flattened respiratory epithelial cells. There are also two types of gastric gland cells, three types of endocrine cells (EC), and basal cells. The epithelial layer is underlain by capillaries of a diameter ranging from 6.1-13.1 microm. Capillaries are more numerous in the anterior part of the stomach, where the mean number of capillary sections per 100 microm of epithelium length is 4, compared with 3 in the posterior part. The cytoplasm of the epithelial cells, apart from its typical organelles, contains electron-dense and lamellar bodies at different stages of maturation, which form the sites of accumulation of surfactant. Small, electron-dense vesicles containing acidic mucopolysaccharides are found in the apical parts of some respiratory epithelial cells. Numerous gastric glands (2 glands per 100 microm of epithelium length), composed of two types of pyramidal cells, extend from the surface epithelium into the subjacent lamina propria. The gland outlets, as well as the apical cytoplasm of the cells are Alcian blue-positive, indicating the presence of acidic mucopolysaccharides. Zymogen granules have not been found, but the apical parts of cells contain vesicles of variable electron density. The cytoplasm of the gastric gland cells also contains numerous electron-dense and lamellar bodies. Gastric gland cells with electron-dense cytoplasm and tubulovesicular system are probably involved in the production of hydrochloric acid. Fixation with tannic acid as well as with ruthenium red revealed a thin layer of phospholipids and glycosaminoglycans covering the entire inner surface of the stomach. In regions of the epithelium where the capillaries are covered by the thin cytoplasmic sheets of the respiratory epithelial cells, a thin air-blood barrier (0.25-2.02 microm) is formed, thus enabling gaseous exchange. Relatively numerous pores closed by diaphragms are seen in the endothelium lining the apical and lateral parts of the capillaries. Between gastric gland cells, solitary, noninnervated endocrine cells (EC) of three types were found. EC are characterized by lighter cytoplasm than the surrounding cells and they contain dense core vesicles (DCV) with a halo between the electron-dense core and the limiting membrane. EC of type I are the most abundant. They are of an open type, reaching the stomach lumen. The round DCV of this type, with a diameter from 92-194 nm, have a centrally located core surrounded by a narrow halo. EC of type II are rarely observed and are of a closed type. They possess two kinds of DCV with a very narrow halo. The majority of them are round, with a diameter ranging from 88-177 nm, while elongated ones, 159-389 nm long, are rare. EC of type III are numerous and also closed. The whole cytoplasm is filled with large DCV: round, with a diameter from 123-283 nm, and oval, 230-371 nm long, both with a core of irregular shape and a wide, irregular halo. EC are involved in the regulation of digestion and probably local gas exchange. In conclusion, the thin-walled stomach of Hypostomus plecostomus, with its rich network of capillaries, has a morphology suggesting it is an efficient organ for air breathing.  相似文献
