To examine the interactions between age and photoperiod on reproduction and spleen weights, we exposed adult male and female rice rats of various ages to photoperiods of 16:8-h light-dark photoperiods (16L:8D) or 12L:12D. After 10 wk, animals were killed and the following data were recorded: weights of testes, seminal vesicles, uterus, ovaries, body, and spleen and, in addition, vaginal patency. Young adult males displayed a greater degree of testicular and seminal vesicle regression in short photoperiods than did older males; the testes of most older males did not regress in response to short photoperiods. Spleen weight was unresponsive to short photoperiods in all males, but was affected by age. Females, however, exhibited reproductive organ regression and decreased vaginal patency in response to short photoperiods at all ages examined. Body weights were affected by photoperiod in young females, and, as in males, photoperiod had no effect on spleen weights. These data suggest that the reproductive response to photoperiod in adult male rice rats declines with age, whereas in adult females it does not.  相似文献

Descendants of a sample of cane mice (Zygodontomys brevicauda) trapped at 8 degrees latitude in Venezuela were tested for reproductive photoresponsiveness. This species breeds continuously, year around, despite living in a seasonally harsh habitat. At 50 days of age there were no differences in the weights of the testes or seminal vesicles or in sperm counts of males born and reared on 16L:8D, 13L:11D, 11L:13D, or 8L:16D photoperiods, although there were small differences in body weight. Females born and reared on 16L:8D vs. 8L:16D cycles became pregnant at the same rates and ages when paired with males at 21 or 31 days of age. The daily duration of melatonin secretion depended on the length of the dark phase of the cycle in both sexes. Circulating levels of melatonin were elevated for 8 h on a 16L:8D cycle and for between 9 and 16 h on an 8L:16D cycle. In this tropical species, the neuroendocrine pathway that links photoperiod to reproduction apparently is disconnected somewhere between melatonin and gonadotropin secretion, causing cane mice to be reproductively unresponsive to variation in photoperiod.  相似文献

The effect of photoperiod on sexual function and growth in weanling male and female collared lemmings (Dicrostonyx groenlandicus) was studied. Males and females maintained in 6 hr light:18 hr dark after weaning were larger at the end of 70 days than their siblings kept in 20L:4D. Males in 6L:18D were longer and overall body growth was greater. Males in 6L:18D had heavier adrenals but there were no differences in the weights of testes, preputial glands or seminal vesicles or in the mean testosterone levels of the two groups. Females in 6L:18D had heavier preputial glands than the 20L:4D females. There were no differences between the two groups in uterine, ovarian or adrenal weights or in the number or mean size of atretic or healthy Graafian follicles. Adult males kept in 6L:18D increased more in body weight than those in 20L:4D, but there was no detectable influence of the short photoperiod on reproductive function.  相似文献

The concept of critical day length is well established among rodents; reproductive function is maintained when day lengths are greater than some specific threshold. In addition to day length cues, seasonal breeding in deer mice can also be regulated by food availability. The caloric threshold necessary to support reproduction remains unspecified for seasonally breeding rodents. The present study examined the interaction between photoperiod and food availability on reproductive function in adult male deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus). A critical caloric intake profile was constructed in long (16L:8D) and short (8L:16D) photoperiods; groups of deer mice in both photoperiods either received food ad libitum or 90, 80, or 70% of their individual ad libitum food intake for 10 wk. At autopsy, paired testes, epididymides, and seminal vesicles were removed and weighed. Body mass, total body fat, and total body water contents were also obtained. Short, as compared to long, day lengths inhibited the reproductive systems of male deer mice. However, food consumption interacted with photoperiod to affect reproductive function. Significant reductions in reproductive organ size as well as spermatogenic activity were observed among short-day mice after a 10% reduction in ad libitum food intake. Long-day animals required a 20% reduction in caloric intake to depress reproductive function. Body mass and total body water content were generally unaffected by either photoperiod or food consumption. Total body fat content was reduced in short- as compared to long-day mice. Two months after pinealectomy carried out in adult male rats previously exposed to a long photoperiod (L:D 14:10) during 10 weeks, the weight of seminal vesicles significantly increased in comparison with Sham-operated animals. Nevertheless, the weights of testes and ventral prostate did not change significantly. The serum LH concentration increased significantly by pinealectomy. The levels of serotonin and 5-hydroxiindolacetic acid significantly decreased in the hypothalamus and midbrain after pinealectomy.  相似文献

Birds use photoperiod to control the time of breeding and moult. However, it is unclear whether responses are dependent on absolute photoperiod, the direction and rate of change in photoperiod, or if photoperiod entrains a circannual clock. If starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) are kept on a constant photoperiod of 12h light:12h darkness per day (12L:12D), then they can show repeated cycles of gonadal maturation, regression and moult, which is evidence for a circannual clock. In this study, starlings kept on constant 11.5L:12.5D for 4 years or 12.5L:11.5D for 3 years showed no circannual cycles in gonadal maturation or moult. So, if there is a circannual clock, it is overridden by a modest deviation in photoperiod from 12L:12D. The responses to 11.5L:12.5D and 12.5L:11.5D were very different, the former perceived as a short photoperiod (birds were photosensitive for most of the time) and the latter as a long photoperiod (birds remained permanently photorefractory). Starlings were then kept on a schedule which ranged from 11.5L:12.5D in mid-winter to 12.5L:11.5D in mid-summer (simulating the annual cycle at 9 degrees N) for 3 years. These birds entrained precisely to calendar time and changes in testicular size and moult were similar to those of birds under a simulated cycle at 52 degrees N. These data show that birds are very sensitive to changes in photoperiod but that they do not simply respond to absolute photoperiod nor can they rely on a circannual clock. Instead, birds appear to respond to the shape of the annual change in photoperiod. This proximate control could operate from near equatorial latitudes and would account for similar seasonal timing in individuals of a species over a wide range of latitudes.  相似文献

Exposure of male Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) for 10 weeks to short photoperiod (SP) providing 10 hr light: 14 hr darkness (10:14 LD) produced a significant reduction in the weights of the reproductive organs, plasma thyroxine (T4) levels and free T4 index (FT4I) compared to the values of animals exposed to long photoperiod (LP, 14:10 LD). C57bl male house mice (Mus musculus) kept in SP (10:14 LD) had reproductive organ weights equivalent to those of mice kept in long days (14:10 LD) and lower T3 uptake (T3U) values. Male gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) exposed to 13 weeks of SP (10:14 LD) had lower body weights, testes and seminal vesicle weights and higher T3U values compared to LP (14:10 LD) controls. However, no effect was seen on plasma T4 and triiodothyronine (T3) values nor the FT4I and free T3 index (FT3I). White-footed male mice (Peromyscus leucopus) exposed to SP (8:16 LD) had significantly lower testes and seminal vesicle weights while plasma T4 and T3 levels were unaffected. Snell strain house mice (Mus musculus) exposed to SP (8:16 LD) had normal reproductive organ weights compared to the values of LP-exposed (16:8 LD) control animals. However, there was a significant depression in T3 and in the FT3I in the SP animals.  相似文献

The number of Leydig cells was determined by stereologic procedures in adult Syrian hamsters housed in long days (14L:10D) to maintain testicular activity (active), in short days (5L:19D) for 12-13 wk to induce testicular regression (photoperiod-induced regressed), or in short days for a period of 21 wk or more to allow spontaneous gonadal recrudescence (spontaneously recrudesced). Testes were removed, sliced, fixed, embedded in Epon 812, and observed by bright-field microscopy. Testicular and seminal vesicle weights, plasma testosterone concentration, total Leydig cell volume per testis, and volume of single Leydig cell were greater (p less than 0.01) in active and recrudesced animals than in regressed animals. The density of Leydig cells was greater in the regressed testes, but the total number per testis was not influenced by photoperiod. In Experiment 2, the rate of recruitment of Leydig cells was determined in 5 adult hamsters exposed to long days (active) or 5 hamsters whose testes were regressed by exposure of animals to short days for 13 wk followed by long-day exposure to initiate testicular growth (photoperiod-induced recrudescing). Hamsters were injected for 3 days/wk for 3 wk with tritiated thymidine, 0.5 or 1 microCi/g body weight. Testes were fixed and tissues prepared, as above, and processed for autoradiography. Again, the photoperiod did not influence the number of Leydig cells per testis. Labeling of Leydig cell nuclei revealed that recruitment of new Leydig cells occurred at approximately 1.3% per day in recrudescing testes but also occurred at approximately 0.6% per day in active testes. Without change in the total number of Leydig cells, new Leydig cells were added continually to the existing population in adult hamsters with either recrudescing or active testes.  相似文献

Photoperiodic information is transferred from female Siberian hamsters to their fetuses during gestation. Although maternal melatonin is known to be essential for the transfer of prenatal photoperiodic information, its specific role is not well defined. The duration of the daily melatonin signal, expressed as an elevation of serum melatonin levels in the maternal circulation, has been hypothesized to convey day length information to the fetus. If this hypothesis is valid, it predicts that identical maternal melatonin signals should affect the fetuses identically, regardless of the prenatal photoperiod. To test this hypothesis, adult females received melatonin in beeswax or beeswax alone. They were paired with males and housed in photoperiods of 12L:12D or 16L:8D. On the day of parturition, mother and young were transferred to constant light (LL). Young males were killed on Day 28 of life, and weights of testes were determined. Prenatal treatment with beeswax alone did not affect the nature of the signal transferred from mother to fetus; young gestated in 12L:12D and reared in LL developed small testes, while those gestated in 16L:8D had large testes. On the other hand, the effect of the prenatal melatonin treatment on postnatal testicular development in LL was inversely dependent on the prenatal photoperiod: testicular growth was stimulated in young gestated in 12L:12D, but inhibited in young gestated in 16L:8D. To verify that the melatonin pellets produced equivalent serum melatonin levels in adult females in 12L:12D and 16L:8D, unmated adult females were killed 6-10 wk after receiving melatonin pellets. Seasonal fluctuations in immune status have been documented for avian and mammalian populations. During the late summer and early fall, immune function is bolstered to help animals cope with the more physiologically demanding winter. The environmental cue for these seasonal changes is apparently decreasing photoperiod. In the present study, we determined the potential role of leptin in mediating the effect of photoperiod on cell-mediated immune responses in male mice. Leptin-deficient (ob/ob) and littermate control mice were housed for 10 wk in either a short (8L:16D) or a long (16L:8D) photoperiod beginning at 6 wk of age. After the mice were killed, immune and reproductive organs were weighed and splenocytes isolated. The proliferative and cytokine responses (interleukin [IL]-2 and IL-4) of splenocytes to the T-cell mitogen, concanavalin A (Con A; 0-40 microg/ml), were determined. Body weights were elevated and both testes and seminal vesicle weights subnormal in ob/ob mice (by ANOVA, main effect of leptin deficiency), but thymuses and spleens were of normal size. Serum leptin levels were at minimum detection limits in ob/ob mice, but leptin levels in control mice housed at 8L:16D were higher than in control mice housed at 16L:8D. The proliferative response of splenocytes from ob/ob mice to Con A was subnormal (by ANOVA, main effect of leptin deficiency), but photoperiod had no effect on this response. Production of IL-2 in splenocytes of ob/ob mice was subnormal (by ANOVA, main effect of leptin deficiency) irrespective of photoperiod, but cells from mice housed at 8L:16D (by ANOVA, main effect of photoperiod) produced more IL-2 than cells from animals housed at 16L:8D. In contrast, a leptin deficiency did not alter IL-4 production, but cells from animals (ob/ob and controls) housed at 16L:8D produced less IL-4 than cells from animals housed at 8L:16D (by ANOVA, main effect of photoperiod). The present study suggests that both photoperiod and leptin have mutually independent effects on the proliferation of lymphocytes and cytokine production profiles. The data do not provide definitive support for the hypothesis that photoperiod-induced changes in leptin secretion mediate the effects of season on immune status.  相似文献

The Siberian hamster, Phodopus sungorus, breeds seasonally. In the laboratory, seasonal breeding can be controlled by photoperiod, which affects the duration of nightly melatonin secretion. Winterlike, short day lengths induce gonadal regression in adult animals, and pups born and maintained in short days undergo pubertal gonadal development later than animals born into long days. However, to date there have been no reports of gestational photoperiod affecting fetal development of reproductive systems. The spinal nucleus of the bulbocavernosus (SNB) and its target muscles, the bulbocavernosus (BC) and levator ani (LA), compose a sexually dimorphic, androgen-sensitive neuromuscular system involved in male reproduction. The SNB neuromuscular system was studied in male Siberian hamsters maintained from conception in short-day (8 h light, 16 h dark; 8L:16D) versus long-day (16L:8D) conditions. On the day of birth, and at postnatal (PN) days 2 and 18, the BC/LA muscles of hamsters gestated and raised in the short photoperiod were significantly reduced relative to those of their long-day counterparts. Testes weights were not significantly different between groups until day 18. Thus, photoperiod exposure during gestation and after birth affects perinatal development of the SNB system in this species, and these effects can be seen as early as the day of birth. Because photoperiod did not significantly affect testes weights until PN18, these results suggest that either perinatal photoperiod affects fetal androgen production without affecting testes weight or it influences BC/LA development independently from androgen.  相似文献

This study was an examination of the effect of photoperiod on spermatogenesis and the accessory glands of the four-striped field mouse (Rhabdomys pumilio), a seasonally breeding rodent that occurs through Southern Africa. Adult scrotal males were exposed to either short day length (10L:14D), long day length (14L:10D), or natural photoperiod in constant-environment rooms (25 degrees C, 41% humidity; food and water ad libitum) for 8 wk in late summer, when males in the wild were spermatogenically active, and in mid-winter, when they were inactive. In neither experiment did prolonged exposure to short day length or naturally decreasing day length inhibit spermatogenic activity, and we conclude that the normal cessation of spermatogenesis that occurs in most male four-striped field mice in winter is not stimulated by day length alone.  相似文献

Weanling male and female field voles were placed in long or short photoperiods, kept at 18 degrees C or 4 degrees C, and fed (ad libitum) diets containing 24%, 16%, 8% and 4% protein, for 6 weeks. Animals in the long photoperiod were more sexually mature than were animals in the short photoperiod. Temperatures had no effect on females, but did affect males: those kept at 4 degrees C had heavier testes and wider seminiferous tubules than those kept at 18 degrees C. There was little difference between the animals on 24%, 16% and 8% protein diets. Animals on 4% protein diets had retarded growth rates and were significantly less sexually mature than those on the other 3 diets, males having smaller testes and seminal vesicles and narrower seminiferous tubules and females having smaller ovaries and uteri.  相似文献

Adult male prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) were housed for 10 wk and exposed to long (16L:8D) or short (8L:16D) photoperiods at 21 degrees or 5 degrees C. Maintenance in short day lengths reduced testicular, epididymal, and seminal vesicle mass and also significantly depressed spermatogenic activity. Cold ambient temperature further suppressed gonadal size in voles exposed to short days. Several pelage characteristics were affected by photoperiod, but not by temperature. Increased fur density, fur depth, and length of guard hair and underhair were observed in voles exposed to short days. Intrascapular brown fat and gonadal fat pad mass as well as body mass were significantly less in voles housed in cold temperatures than in voles exposed to warm ambient temperatures; photoperiod did not affect these parameters. Approximately 30% of the male voles exposed to short days maintained their reproductive systems, yet they clearly processed photoperiodic information; all short-day males, regardless of reproductive condition, had comparable winter pelage development. Our results suggest that in prairie voles, photoperiod may be a predictive cue for reproductive function in nature; however, it appears that pelage development is a more obligatory response to photoperiod than is reproduction.  相似文献

Cane mice (Zygodontomys brevicauda) are year-round breeders in Venezuela. As shown previously, these animals are not reproductively responsive to variation in photoperiod. In the present experiments, male cane mice were maintained on long or short day lengths (16L:8D or 8L:16D, respectively) and challenged with each of three experimental treatments known to "unmask" reproductive photoresponsiveness in laboratory rats: olfactory bulbectomy, prolonged food restriction, and exposure as neonates to a single injection of testosterone. Variation in photoperiod had no inhibitory effect on the responses of cane mice to any of these three treatments, as assessed by the weight of their testes and seminal vesicles. A fourth experiment demonstrated that cane mice are insensitive to 10 wk of continuous exposure to pharmacological levels of melatonin, again as assessed by reproductive organ weight. Likewise, a fifth experiment documented a lack of response to 10 wk of late-afternoon injections of massive amounts of melatonin. The cane mouse apparently is unique among the animals challenged so far in these ways in that it seems to have no vestige of reproductive photoresponsiveness.  相似文献

Extract of the flower Malva viscus conzattii (M. conzattii) was administered at a dose of 25/50 mg/day/animal to 30 healthy adult male gerbils and 30 adult male house rats to determine its effect on fertility. After 25 days' treatment fin l body weight, and the weights of testes, epididymides, seminal vesicles, and adrenal glands were measured. Testis, epididymides, and seminal vesicles were prepared for histological examination and total protein, RNA, sialic acid, and alkaline phosphatase activity were determined. Quantitative estimation of cholesterol was also made. While overall body weight remained stable during treatment, testicular weight in both animals was drastically decreased. A complete spermatogenic arrest in the testes was evident in house rats treated with 50 mg/day for 20 days and in the gerbil treated with 25 mg/day for 25 days. The seminiferous tubules showed marked degeneration, lined by 1 or 2 cell layers. Epididymides showed degenerative changes as well. RNA contents of the testes, epididydmides, and seminal vesicles of treated anials were significantly lowered as was sialilc acid content. Total cholesterol was increased significantly. M. conzattii causes an effective inhibition of spermatogenesis in gerbils and house rats in 25 states and induces infertility.  相似文献

Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus) maintained under simulated natural photoperiods exhibit marked reductions in body weight as day lengths decrease in summer and fall. This experiment assessed whether the component of the seasonal body weight rhythm that is independent of gonadal hormones exhibits a graded dependence on decreasing day lengths or whether the entire program of weight loss is triggered by the crossing of a single critical day length in late summer. Male hamsters born into a photoperiod with 13 h light and 11 h dark (i.e., 13L : 11D) were castrated and transferred to simulated natural photoperiod for early April at 40 degrees N latitude. At the summer solstice (15L : 9D) some hamsters remained on that photoperiod whereas others experienced gradual decreases in day length. Three additional groups were moved to static photoperiods when day lengths had subsequently declined to 13L : 11D, 11L : 13D, or 9L : 15D, respectively. Day lengths decreasing to 13L : 11D were sufficient to suppress body weight but were less inhibitory than further decreases in day length. Hamsters identified as photononresponsive on the basis of daily activity rhythms increased body weight monotonically. These results establish that steroid-independent modulation of body weight depends on photoperiod in a graded fashion.  相似文献

对离乳雄性叙利亚地鼠(Mesocricetusauratus)和雌性叙利亚地鼠各30只分别给以长光照(16L:8D)、中光照(12L:12D)和短光照(8L:16D)三种光周期处理,研究光周期对叙利亚地鼠生长发育和繁殖的影响。13周龄时,短光照处理组雄性地鼠的体重显著(P<0.05)高于长光照和中光照组的体重;雌性地鼠9周龄时长光照组的体重显著(P<0.01)高于另外两个处理组的体重,较高的日食量可能是长光照组具有较大体重的原因之一,雄性地鼠的睾丸、副睾和肾上腺重量及雌性地鼠的卵巢、子宫和肾上腺重量表现了随着光照时间的延长而递增的趋势。长光照条件有利于雌性地鼠的正常发情和繁殖。每天16h的光照对繁殖地鼠是比较适宜的。  相似文献

Organisms undergoing latitudinal range expansion face a change in the photoperiod which can lead to a mismatch between the timing of seasonal changes in physiological and life history traits with seasonal environmental changes. This mismatch can lead to lowered survival, for example, due to unsynchronized diapause timing. Successful range expansion even in recent introductions requires that organisms which use the photoperiod for seasonal predictions should show interpopulational differences in photoperiodic responses at different latitudes, as the photoperiod is a function of latitude. We investigated among population differences in photoperiodic responses of life history and physiological traits linked to diapause in the invasive beetle Leptinotarsa decemlineata. Beetles from a northern marginal and a southern European population were reared under short day (12:12L:D) and long day (18:6L:D) photoperiods. Both populations reacted similarly to the short day photoperiod. Their abdominal total lipid content increased and water content decreased which suggests that the beetles prepared for diapause. This was also indicated by low mortality during diapause. In the long day photoperiod large interpopulational differences were found, the southern population ceased lipid accumulation after 5 days, while the northern population continued lipid accumulation as beetles in the short day photoperiod. This indicates that the northern population has a longer critical photoperiod than the southern one. Abdominal total lipid stores in 10 day old beetles were shown to be predominantly composed of neutral lipids (85%), most likely representing storage triacylglycerols. Fatty acid profiles of both the neutral lipids and the phospholipids showed large shifts during the first 10 day of adult life, predominantly in the fractions of 18:0, 18:1ω9, 18:2ω6 and 18:3ω3. Although the degree of unsaturation increased with age, it was not higher in diapausing than non-diapausing beetles. This indicates that this species does not increase diapause related cold tolerance via homeoviscous adaptation, and might have developed other means to cope with suboptimal temperatures, such as behavioral adaptations.  相似文献

Peripubertal reproductive development of Siberian hamsters is influenced by photoperiodic information received during gestation; the maternal pineal is important for this process. We observed that in the absence of the maternal pineal, the fetus appears to receive no information about gestational photoperiods. This is not the equivalent of receipt of a long-day signal by the fetus. Pinealectomized and sham-operated pregnant females were exposed to photoperiods of 12L:12D, 14L:10D, 16L:8D, or constant light (LL); young were reared from birth to 28 days of age in LL or 14L:10D. Regardless of the gestational photoperiod, LL-reared male young born to pinealectomized dams had smaller testes than LL-reared young of pineal-intact dams exposed to 16L:8D while pregnant. Thus, pinealectomy did not result in transmission of a long-day signal, nor did young born of pinealectomized dams receive short- or intermediate-day signals. Unlike young of pineal-intact females exposed to 12L:12D or 14L:10D while pregnant, young born of pinealectomized dams had small testes when reared in 14L:10D, irrespective of gestational photoperiod. Uterine weights of female young presented similar patterns of responses. In a second experiment, adult females were entrained to 12L:12D, 14L:10D, or 16L:8D for 3 wk prior to pinealectomy to determine if the effect of maternal pinealectomy would be altered. Entrainment to the new photoperiod prior to surgery did not alter the effects of maternal pinealectomy.  相似文献
