Virucidal activity of the new disinfectant monopercitric acid   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
AIMS: The virucidal efficacy of monopercitric acid (MPCA) was evaluated against the enveloped vaccinia virus as well as the nonenveloped adenovirus type 2 and poliovirus type 1. The results were compared with that obtained with peracetic acid (PAA). METHODS AND RESULTS: In the virucidal suspension test without and with protein burden, all viruses were inactivated by 0.5% MPCA within 0.5 min or by 0.1% MPCA within 5 min as measured by a >10(4)-fold reduction in virus titres. For MPCA, there was a better virucidal efficacy than for PAA which inactivated all viruses included in the test within 15-30 min at a concentration of 0.2%. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The high virucidal activity, short exposure times, and nontoxic by-products seem to make MPCA suitable as disinfectant for medical use and should warrant further investigation.  相似文献

Most biomaterial‐associated infections are caused by opportunistic pathogens and bacteria that are regularly found within the microflora of the implant site. In addition, a biomaterial implant or device remains at risk of infection by hematogenous spread of bacteria disseminated from infections elsewhere in the body or from infected peri‐implant tissue in revision surgery. The resulting infections are frequently accompanied by patient morbidity and discomfort and can lead to surgical replacement of the implant after lengthy, unsuccessful attempts to mitigate infections with antibiotic treatments. Therefore, extensive study is aiming to find new infection‐resistant antimicrobial biomaterials and coatings for implants and devices to effectively reduce the incidence of biomaterial‐associated infections. An overview of the in vitro and in vivo antimicrobial efficacies of the numerous biomaterials currently available is beyond the scope of this review. Herein, we provide a comprehensive review of bioactive glasses as biomaterial delivery systems for antimicrobial agents.  相似文献

Objective: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of acrylic resins containing different percentages of silver and zinc zeolite, and to assess whether the addition of zeolite alters the flexural and impact strength of the resins. Background: The characteristics of acrylic resins support microorganism development that can threaten the health of the dentures user. Material and methods: A microwave‐polymerised (Onda‐Cryl) and two heat‐polymerised (QC20 and Lucitone 550) acrylic resins were used. The materials were handled according to the manufacturers’ instructions. Fifty rectangular‐shaped specimens (8 × 10 × 4mm) were fabricated from each resin and assigned to 5 groups (n = 10) according to their percentage of Irgaguard B5000 silver–zinc zeolite (0%– control, 2.5%, 5.0%, 7.5% and 10%). Flexural strength and Izod impact strength were evaluated. The antimicrobial activity against two strains of Candida albicans and two strains of Streptococcus mutans was assessed by agar diffusion method. Data were analysed statistically by one‐way anova and Tukey’s test at 5% significance level. Results: The addition of 2.5% of Irgaguard B5000 to the materials resulted in antimicrobial activity against all strains. Flexural strength decreased significantly with the addition of 2.5% (QC20 and Lucitone 550) and 5.0% (Onda‐Cryl) of Irgaguard B5000. The impact strength decreased significantly with the addition of 2.5% (Lucitone 550) and 5.0% (QC20 and Onda‐Cryl) of zeolite. Conclusion: The addition of silver–zinc zeolite to acrylic resins yields antimicrobial activity, but may affect negatively the mechanical properties, depending on the percentage of zeolite.  相似文献

Aims: To investigate the antimicrobial efficacy of an alkaloid, harmaline alone and in combination with chlorhexidine digluconate (CHG) against clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus (Saureus) grown in planktonic and biofilm cultures. Methods: Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) were determined for each micro‐organism grown in suspension and in biofilm using microbroth dilution method. Chequerboard assays were used to determine synergistic, indifferent or antagonistic interactions between harmaline and CHG, and the some of results were verified by confocal laser scanning microscopy. Results: Harmaline and CHG showed effective antimicrobial activity against suspensions and biofilm cultures of Saureus, respectively. As determined by fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI), synergistic antimicrobial effects between harmaline and CHG were observed in nine and 11 of the 13 S. aureus strains when in suspension and in biofilm, respectively. FICI values were from 0·375 to 1·25 when in suspension and from 0·25 to 1·25 when in biofilm. Conclusions: Synergistic activity of harmaline and CHG against clinical isolates of S. aureus (in suspension and in biofilm) was observed in vitro. Significance and Impact of the Study: This study might provide alternative methods to overcome the problem of drug‐resistance of S. aureus both in suspension and in biofilm.  相似文献

Synthesized urushiol derivatives possessing different carbon atomic length in the alkyl side chain inhibited the growth of food spoilage and pathogenic microorganisms. Particularly, non-allergenic 3-pentylcatechol showed a broad antimicrobial spectrum on an agar plate. Most food spoilage and pathogenic microorganisms were sensitive to urushiol derivatives in the liquid culture. The morphologies of the microorganisms were changed after treatment of 3-pentylcatechol.  相似文献

AIMS: The aim of this study was to analyse the antimicrobial properties extracts of Aquilegia vulgaris, and their principial flavonoid component and to compare the obtained results with the activity of gentamicin and nystatin. METHODS AND RESULTS: The ethanol, acetone and isopropanol extracts as well as the subextracts isolated from the methanol extract together with the main flavonoid: 4'-methoxy-5,7-dihydroxyflavone 6-C-glucoside (isocytisoside) were obtained from the leaves with stems of Aquilegia vulgaris L. All the extracts were analysed by TLC to confirm flavonoids and phenolic acids occurrence. The antimicrobial activity was tested by the method of series dilutions against different Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria and also fungi. The results have shown that the extracts, subextracts and isocytisoside inhibit growth of all studied micro-organisms, revealing the greatest activity against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus, Staph. epidermidis and the mould Aspergillus niger. CONCLUSIONS: The antimicrobial activity of the tested materials it is possibly related to the content of isocytisoside. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study has determined new activity of A. vulgaris and suggested the necessity of further studies.  相似文献

AIMS: Thymus species are wild species mostly found in the arid lands of Portugal. Possible antimicrobial properties of Thymus essential oils have been investigated. The chemical composition of the essential oils and the antimicrobial activity of Thymus mastichina (L) L. subsp. mastichina, T. camphoratus and T. lotocephalus from different regions of Portugal were analysed. METHODS AND RESULTS: Hydrodistillation was used to isolate the essential oils and the chemical analyses were performed by gas chromatography (GC) and GC coupled to mass spectrometry. The antimicrobial activity was tested by the disc agar diffusion technique against Candida albicans, Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus aureus. Pure linalool, 1,8-cineole and a mixture (1 : 1) of these compounds were included. Linalool, 1,8-cineole or linalool/1,8-cineole and linalool/1,8-cineole/linalyl acetate were the major components of the essential oils, depending on the species or sampling place. The essential oils isolated from the Thymus species studied demonstrated antimicrobial activity but the micro-organisms tested had significantly different sensitivities. CONCLUSIONS: The antimicrobial activity of essential oils may be related to more than one component. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Portuguese endemic species of Thymus can be used for essential oil production for food spoilage control, cosmetics and pharmaceutical use. Further studies will be required to elucidate the cell targets of the essential oil components.  相似文献

The present study was designed to evaluate potential antibacterial activities of synthetic LFchimera against five plant pathogenic bacteria such as Ralstonia solanacearum, Erwinia amylovora, Xanthomonas campestris, Pseudomonas syringae and Pectobacterium carotovorum. The agar disc-diffusion method with different concentrations (0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 μM) of peptide was used to study the antibacterial activity of LFchimera against bacteria. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of the LFchimera peptide were tested using serial dilution method at concentration ranging from 0 to 10 μM. The Results from agar disc-diffusion method revealed that LFchimera was effective against all bacterial strain in a dose-dependent manner. LFchimera showed highest activity in 0.8 μM which was significant compared to the standard antibiotic. LFchimera pepetide showed low MIC values (4 μM) against all tested bacteria. LFchimera peptide was found to show antibacterial activity against important phytopathogenic bacteria and can improve the potential of an antimicrobial peptide in plant disease management.  相似文献

Linear cationic α‐helical antimicrobial peptides are promising chemotherapeutics. Most of them act by different mechanisms, making it difficult to microorganisms acquiring resistance. Decoralin is an example of antimicrobial peptide; it was described by Konno et al. and presented activity against microorganisms, but with pronounced hemolytic activity. We synthesized leucine‐substituted decoralin analogs designed based on important physicochemical properties, which depend on the maintenance of the amphiphilic α‐helical tendency of the native molecule. Peptides were synthesized, purified, and characterized, and the conformational studies were performed. The results indicated that the analogs presented both higher therapeutic indexes, but with antagonistic behavior. While [Leu]10‐Dec‐NH2 analog showed similar activity against different microorganisms (c.a. 0.4–0.8 μmol L?1), helical structuration, and some hemolytic activity, [Leu]8‐Dec‐NH2 analog did not tend to helical structure and presented antimicrobial activities two orders higher than the other two peptides analyzed. On the other hand, this analog showed to be the less hemolytic (MHC value = 50.0 μmol L?1). This approach provided insight for understanding the effects of the leucine substitution in the amphiphilic balance. They led to changes on the conformational tendency, which showed to be important for the mechanism of action and affecting antimicrobial and hemolytic activities. Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the antibacterial activity, antibiotic-associated synergy, and anti-biofilm activity of the ruthenium complex, cis-[RuCl2 (dppb) (bqdi)]2+ (RuNN). RuNN exhibited antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values ranging from 15.6 to 62.5?µg ml?1 and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values ranging from 62.5 to 125?µg ml?1. A synergistic effect against Staphylococcus spp. was observed when RuNN was combined with ampicillin, and the range of associated fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) values was 0.187 to 0.312. A time-kill curve indicated the bactericidal activity of RuNN in the first 1–5?h. In general, RuNN inhibited biofilm formation and disrupted mature biofilms. Furthermore, RuNN altered the cellular morphology of S. aureus biofilms. Further, RuNN did not cause hemolysis of erythrocytes. The results of this study provide evidence that RuNN is a novel therapeutic candidate to treat bacterial infections caused by Staphylococcus biofilms.  相似文献

The crude methanolic extracts of six species of Hypericum [H. caprifoliatum Cham. & Schlecht., H. carinatum Griseb., H. connatum Lam., H. ternum A. St. Hil., H. myrianthum Cham. & Schlecht. and H. polyanthemum Klotzsch ex Reichardt] growing in southern Brazil were analyzed for antimicrobial activity against several microorganisms (bacteria and fungi). The most active plant was H. caprifoliatum, which showed activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Only H. polyanthemum and H. ternum extracts were active against Bacillus subtilis. None of the crude methanolic extracts showed activity against S. epidermidis, Escherichia coli or Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Extracts from these species were evaluated chemically and tannin, flavonoid and phenolic acids were the prominent compounds. The plants contained quercitrin, hyperoside (except H. connatum) and, less frequently, isoquercitrin and chlorogenic acid. In contrast to H. perforatum, which has high concentrations of rutin, these species do not produce this flavonoid or it appears as traces. The tannin concentration varied between 5.1 and 16.7% in H. myrianthum and H. ternum, respectively.  相似文献

Aims: The aim of this study is to assess the antibacterial activity of sodium citrate against Streptococcus pneumoniae and several oral bacteria. Methods and Results: The antibacterial activity was determined by broth microdilution method. The results showed that although Enterocuccus faecium OB7084 and Klebsiella pneumoniae OB7088 had high tolerance to sodium citrate, several oral bacteria including Fusobacterium nucleatum JCM8532T, Streptococcus mutans JCM5705T and Strep. pneumoniae NBRC102642T were susceptible. Furthermore, the bactericidal activity of sodium citrate against Strep. pneumoniae NBRC102642T was not influenced by pH in the range of 5·0–8·0, whereas that of sodium lactate was weakened at neutral or weak alkaline pH. When Strep. pneumoniae NBRC102642T was treated with sodium citrate for 2 h, many burst cells were observed. However, addition of MgCl2 or CaCl2 to an assay medium weakened the antimicrobial activity although ZnCl2 or MnCl2 did not influence. Conclusions: Independent of pH, sodium citrate inhibited the growth of oral bacteria, which suggests that the mechanism is different from that of sodium lactate. Significance and Impact of the Study: The results presented in this study would be available for understanding the antimicrobial property of sodium citrate.  相似文献
