Bis-cystine cyclic peptides are a new kind of molecules with potential use as cavitands, transporters or antagonists of target ligands. Studies aimed at establishing their conformational profiles may prove useful in understanding their characteristics and potentiate their use in molecular design. The present investigation reports the results of a computational study devoted to establishing the conformational preferences of model bis-cystine cyclic peptides and the properties in common with their linear analogs. For this purpose a study of four model compounds: (Ac-Cys-X-Cys-NHMe)2 and (Ac-Cys-X-X-Cys-NHMe)2 with X = Ala, Val, was performed. The goal of the study was to explore the importance of the conformational nature of the central residues, the effect of the number of them, and the loss of conformational freedom after cyclization on model molecules. Accordingly, the conformational space and the dynamic behaviour of the four cyclic peptides as well as the corresponding linear analogs was carefully explored. An infant's own name is a unique social cue. Infants are sensitive to their own name by 4 months of age, but whether they use their names as a social cue is unknown. Electroencephalogram (EEG) was measured as infants heard their own name or stranger's names and while looking at novel objects. Event related brain potentials (ERPs) in response to names revealed that infants differentiate their own name from stranger names from the first phoneme. The amplitude of the ERPs to objects indicated that infants attended more to objects after hearing their own names compared to another name. Thus, by 5 months of age infants not only detect their name, but also use it as a social cue to guide their attention to events and objects in the world.  相似文献

Snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus) are an ecologically important herbivore because they modify vegetation through browsing and serve as a prey resource for multiple predators. We implemented a multiscale approach to characterize habitat relationships for snowshoe hares across the mixed conifer landscape of the northern Rocky Mountains, USA. Our objectives were to (1) assess the relationship between horizontal cover and snowshoe hares, (2) estimate how forest metrics vary across the gradient of snowshoe hare use and horizontal cover, and (3) model and map snowshoe hare occupancy and intensity of use. Results indicated that both occupancy and intensity of use by snowshoe hares increased with horizontal cover and that the effect became stronger as intensity of use increased. This underscores the importance of dense horizontal cover to achieve high use, and likely density, of snowshoe hares. Forest structure in areas with high snowshoe hare use and horizontal cover was characterized as multistoried with dense canopy cover and medium‐sized trees (e.g., 12.7–24.4 cm). The abundance of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) was associated with snowshoe hare use within a mixed conifer context, and the only species to increase in abundance with horizontal cover was Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii) and subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa). Our landscape‐level modeling produced similar patterns in that we observed a positive effect of lodgepole pine and horizontal cover on both occupancy and use by snowshoe hares, but we also observed a positive yet parabolic effect of snow depth on snowshoe hare occupancy. This work is among the first to characterize the multiscale habitat relationships of snowshoe hares across a mixed conifer landscape as well as to map their occupancy and intensity of use. Moreover, our results provide stand‐ and landscape‐level insights that directly relate to management agencies, which aids in conservation efforts of snowshoe hares and their associated predators.  相似文献

Imagery is a cognitive process during which people use their minds to create (or recreate) experiences that are similar to real-life situations. This study examined how college athletes used imagery during weight training. Subjects were 295 Division I (n = 163) and Division II (n = 132) college student athletes (men: n = 138, women: n = 157) who participated in a weight training program as a requirement of their sport. They completed a slightly modified version of the "Weight Lifting Imagery Questionnaire." Results showed that appearance imagery (i.e., images related to the attainment of a fit-looking body) was used and considered the most effective followed by technique imagery (i.e., images related to performing the skill and techniques correctly with good form) and energy imagery (i.e., images related to getting "psyched up" or feeling energized). Other variables that effected imagery use were gender, age, time of season, and levels of motivation. In addition, gender, previous imagery training, and level of motivation had an effect on the perceptions of imagery effectiveness. Confidence in the ability to image was associated with both imagery use and effectiveness, and imagery use and effectiveness were associated with confidence in the weight room. The findings support previous research in exercise imagery that appearance imagery is most used followed by technique and energy imagery and extend them in such a way that strength coaches have practical advice on how to use imagery in a positive way with their athletes. Suggestions about how strength coaches can use imagery with their clients are provided.  相似文献

Prey species might use several possible ways to assess predation risk when encountering a predator. Animals may consider the risk level estimated in a first encounter to remain unchanged across subsequent encounters (fixed risk response), or they may update and change their responses across encounters in accordance with short‐term changes in risk levels (flexible risk response). We examined in the field how wall lizards assess risk level by analyzing time spent in refuges after simulated predator attacks. We first examined how risk was assessed when multiple consecutive sources of risk were present simultaneously. The results suggest that wall lizards assess risk based on multiple cues, such as approach speed, directness, and persistence (measured as the distance of the predator to their refuge after an attack). When risk was high lizards remained longer in their refuges. The first decision to appear partly from the refuge depended on both approach speed and persistence, whereas the decision to emerge completely depended only on persistence and not on approach speed. This suggests that wall lizards update information on predator threat and adjusted their emergence accordingly. In a second experiment, we analyzed how short‐term changes in risk level of successive attacks affected refuge use. Successive emergence times varied as a function of current risk level of each repeated attack, independently of the risk level of previous attacks. This indicated that lizards could track short‐term changes in risk level through time and modify their initial responses when required. Fine adjustments of refuge use may help lizards to minimize costs of refuge use in unfavorable and variable environments where antipredatory responses are costly.  相似文献

Local communities in central Brazil harvest buriti palm (Mauritia flexuosa) fruit from swamp forests as well as using them for agriculture and cattle and pig farming. This study describes the intensity of forest use by buriti fruit harvesters and identifies how their socioeconomic conditions influence resource use. We visited 75 swamp forests where buriti fruits are harvested and interviewed the head of the nearest household. Agriculture was practiced in 72?% of forests and cattle farming in 52?%. For almost half (48?%) of households agriculture and buriti fruit harvest were the main sources income. Forests resources were equally important to all socioeconomic classes, even richer farmers. The intensity of fruit harvest did not differ between collective and private use regimes of forests. Market access was a limitation to fruit harvest intensity. The high intensity of swamp forest use suggests that their conservation will require change to current management practices.  相似文献

Representatives of the beetle family Lampyridae ("fireflies", "lightningbugs") are well known for their use of light signals for species recognition during mate search. However, not all species in this family use light for mate attraction, but use chemical signals instead. The lampyrids have a worldwide distribution with more than 2000 described species, but very little is known about their phylogenetic relationships. Within North America, some lampyrids use pheromones as the major mating signal whereas others use visual signals such as extended glows or short light flashes. Here, we use a phylogenetic approach to illuminate the relationships of North American lampyrids and the evolution of their mating signals. Specifically, to establish the first phylogeny of all North American lampyrid genera, we sequenced nuclear (18S) and mitochondrial (16S and COI) genes to investigate the phylogenetic relationships of 26 species from 16 North American (NA) genera and one species from the genus Pterotus that was removed recently from the Lampyridae. To test the monophyly of the NA firefly fauna we sequenced the same genes from three European lampyrids and three Asian lampyrids, and included all available Genbank data (27 additional Asian lampyrids and a former lampyrid from Asia, Rhagophthalmus). Our results show that the North American lampyrids are not monophyletic. Different subgroups are closely related to species from Europe, Asia and tropical America, respectively. The present classification of fireflies into subfamilies and tribes is not, for the most part, supported by our phylogenetic analysis. Two former lampyrid genera, Pterotus and Rhagophthalmus, which have recently been removed from this family, are in fact nested within the Lampyridae. Further, we found that the use of light as a sexual signal may have originated one or four times among lampyrids, followed by nine or four losses, respectively. Short flashes originated at least twice and possibly three times independently among our study taxa. The use of short flashes as a mating signal was replaced at least once by the use of long glows, and light signals as mating signals were lost at least three times in our study group and replaced by pheromones as the main signal mode.  相似文献

The use of placebo medication, long recognized by clinicians, often has serious practical implications, such as patient deception. Past evidence has suggested that resident physicians tend to misuse placebo medication. Interns from two consecutive years of a residency program were surveyed anonymously to assess their knowledge and use of placebos. Of the 74 interns surveyed, 44 (59%) were familiar with placebo use in patient care. Fifty percent of these interns familiar with placebo use had learned about placebos from another physician. All interns who had learned about placebos during their internships had learned from another physician, whereas interns who had gained their knowledge of placebos as medical students were as likely to have learned from the medical literature as they were to have learned from a physician (P = 0.027). Interns aware of placebo use were more likely to consider placebo administration for suspected, factitious pain (P = 0.022). The present study uncovered no relationship between interns' estimations of placebo efficacy and the utility they attributed to placebos in assessing a complaint of pain. This suggests that conceptual inconsistencies underlie their use of placebos. Interns often learn of placebos as medical students and are influenced by physician-mentors. Placebo use in patient care is an area of attention for medical educators.  相似文献

Diagnosis of megakaryoblastic and early erythroid leukemia requires the use of differentiation markers that in most cases permit their precise diagnosis. In some cases, their use can be misleading. Here we report and discuss some examples. A platelet peroxidase (PPO) activity is detected in most cases of early erythroid leukemias as well as in the CFU-E-like cells of normal marrow, thus providing evidence that PPO activity must be studied along with other (immunologic or ultrastructural) markers to permit a reliable diagnosis of megakaryoblastic leukemia. Ferritin molecules an erythroid marker, could be detected as a cluster at ultrastructural level in leukemic platelets and in micromegakaryocytes of one patient. However, in blasts of the erythroid lineage, ferritin molecules are also either dispersed in the cytoplasm or localized in theta granules. Immunologic markers have also their own limit. Indeed, in one patient, GB IIb and IIIa were detected on erythroid blasts, resulting in a phenotype very similar to HEL cells. Carbonic anhydrase (CA) I, an early erythroid marker, was detected in the platelets of four leukemic patients and was present along with an increased expression of CA II. This study emphasizes the fact that precise diagnosis of leukemia cannot be performed with a single marker of differentiation, but requires the simultaneous use of several lineage restricted markers.  相似文献

土壤缺磷和低磷利用率是现代农业生产发展的主要限制因素之一,筛选和培育磷商效吸收利用品种是提高磷素利用率的有效途径。采用土壤盆栽试验方法进行了不同大豆(Glycine max(L.)Merr.)品种磷吸收利用特性比较研究。结果表明。在缺磷和正常供磷条件下,不同大豆品种植株在株离、根干重、地上部干重、根冠比率、植株磷含量和其相对值、磷吸收量和其相对值、磷利用效率和其相对比值等方面表现出显著的差异。多数达到了极显著水平。相关分析表明,在缺磷条件下,大豆不同品种植株磷的利用效率及其相对比值与植株磷含量和磷吸收量以及它们的相对值呈显著或极显著负相关。植株磷含量与植株磷吸收量呈极显著正相关。以植株干物质量和其相对值、植株磷吸收量和其相对似以及植株磷利用效率为筛选指标,筛选出3个大豆磷高效品种。  相似文献

Background

Ineffective district health management potentially impacts on health system performance and service delivery. However, little is known about district health managing practices and time allocation in resource-constrained health systems. Therefore, a time use study was conducted in order to understand current time use practices of district health managers in Ghana.

Methods

All 21 district health managers working in three districts of the Eastern Region were included in the study and followed for a period of three months. Daily retrospective interviews about their time use were conducted, covering 1182 person-days of observation. Total time use of the sample population was assessed as well as time use stratified by managerial position. Differences of time use over time were also evaluated.

Results

District health managers used most of their working time for data management (16.6%), attending workshops (12.3%), financial management (8.7%), training of staff (7.1%), drug and supply management (5.0%), and travelling (9.6%). The study found significant variations of time use across the managerial cadres as well as high weekly variations of time use impulsed mainly by a national vertical program.

Conclusions

District health managers in Ghana use substantial amounts of their working time in only few activities and vertical programs greatly influence their time use. Our findings suggest that efficiency gains are possible for district health managers. However, these are unlikely to be achieved without improvements within the general health system, as inefficiencies seem to be largely caused by external factors.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to determine the acceptance and perception of Nigerian patients to medical photography. A self‐administered questionnaire was distributed among Nigerian patients attending oral and maxillofacial surgery and plastic surgery clinics of 3 tertiary health institutions. Information requested included patients' opinion about consent process, capturing equipment, distribution and accessibility of medical photographs. The use of non‐identifiable medical photographs was more acceptable than identifiable to respondents for all purposes (P = 0.003). Most respondents were favourably disposed to photographs being taken for inclusion in the case note, but opposed to identifiable photographs being used for other purposes most especially in medical websites and medical journals. Female respondents preferred non‐identifiable medical photographs to identifiable ones (P = 0.001). Most respondents (78%) indicated that their consent be sought for each of the outline needs for medical photography. Half of the respondents indicated that identifiable photographs may have a negative effect on their persons; and the most commonly mentioned effects were social stigmatization, bad publicity and emotional/psychological effects. Most of the respondents preferred the use of hospital‐owned camera to personal camera/personal camera‐phone for their medical photographs. Most respondents (67.8%) indicated that they would like to be informed about the use of their photographs on every occasion, and 74% indicated that they would like to be informed of the specific journal in which their medical photographs are to be published. In conclusion, non‐identifiable rather than identifiable medical photography is acceptable to most patients in the studied Nigerian environment. The use of personal camera/personal camera‐phone should be discouraged as its acceptance by respondents is very low. Judicious use of medical photography is therefore advocated to avoid breach of principle of privacy and confidentiality in medical practice.  相似文献

This research examined capuchin monkey (Cebus apella) grips for the use of throwing, nut-cracking, and cutting tools. We provided subjects with stones and apparatus that accommodated the use of stones as tools. Our subjects exhibited five grips, two of which the animals used when force was the primary consideration (power grips) and three of which the animals use when accuracy of sensory judgment and instrumentation was required (precision grips). We believe that the range of contexts in which capuchins use stone tools, combined with the ability of capuchins to employ both power and precision grips as part of their tool repertoire, indicate that Cebus apella can be used to identify grips that facilitated hominid lithic technology. Educators in medical schools around the world are presently experimenting with innovative ways of using web-based learning to supplement the existing teaching and learning process. We have recently used a popular open-source course management system (CMS) called the modular object-oriented dynamic learning environment (Moodle) to construct an online site (DPhysiol) to facilitate our face-to-face teaching of physiology to a group of first-year students in the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery program. The integration of the Moodle site into our teaching was assessed using online log activity, student examination marks, and feedback from students. The freely available Moodle platform was simple to use, helped to effectively deliver course materials, and has features that allowed cooperative learning. Students who used the CMS throughout their academic year and commented favorably regarding its use as a complement to the face-to-face classroom sessions. The group of students used the CMS obtained significantly higher scores in the final examination compared with the previous class that did not use the CMS. In addition, there was a significant correlation between student participation and performance in online quizzes and their final examination marks. However, students' overall online usage of the CMS did not correlate with their examination marks. We recommend Moodle as a useful tool for physiology educators who are interested in integrating web-based learning into their existing teaching curriculum.  相似文献

Questions as to the use of pressurized aerosol inhalers were asked of 130 persons presenting for routine pulmonary function studies who had used such a device in the previous year. After spirometry was conducted the subjects used the inhaler; they were unaware that their technique of use was being observed. Only 10.8% performed correctly all 11 maneuvers suggested for the proper use of the inhalers, and 24.7% failed to perform more than 5 satisfactorily. There were significant differences in performance according to referral diagnosis (chronic obstructive lung disease v. asthma) and regularity of use of inhalers.  相似文献

The potential importance of watershed land use types, lake/watershed morphometry/topography and geographic distance as drivers of phytoplankton community composition was evaluated by using data collected from 18 freshwaters (lakes and reservoirs) distributed around Greece. In all freshwaters, phytoplankton species composition showed a strong correlation with the composition of land uses within their watersheds but no correlation with morphometry/topography and geographic distance. Cyanobacteria were found to be associated with artificial and agricultural land use types. Chrysophytes were closely associated to forested areas whereas euglenophytes to industrial, commercial, and transport units. Phytoplankton total biomass was significantly higher in freshwaters with a cover of agricultural and artificial land use >30% in their watersheds. This rather low threshold of agricultural and artificial land use cover might be indicative of the higher sensitivity of Mediterranean freshwaters to eutrophication process. Analysis performed separately for lakes and reservoirs revealed some diverse patterns with lake morphometric/topographic variables significantly affecting similarity in species occurrence. The results demonstrate that land use types reflecting anthropogenic pressures could act as critical drivers explaining phytoplankton structure. Our research suggests that Mediterranean freshwaters could be highly sensitive to land use types within their watersheds, thus landscape structure and configuration should be taken into account toward effective conservation and management plans.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of dietary supplement use among adolescent athletes. The project was also directed at identifying the sources these student-athletes used for acquiring information about dietary supplements. One hundred thirty nine high school athletes (99 males; 34 females; mean age = 15.8 +/- 1.19 years) volunteered to participate in this study. A 16-question anonymous survey instrument examined use of dietary supplements, reasons for use, type of sport participation, and sources of information regarding dietary supplements. Of the participants in this study, 22.3% (N = 31) reported currently taking dietary supplements. There was no relationship found between dietary supplement use and age. There were a significantly higher number of males reporting current dietary supplement use. Of those who reported to be currently taking dietary supplements, sports performance (N = 25) was the most reported reason for use. There were no significant differences found in reported dietary supplement use between any of the sports. Of the participants, 38.1% (N = 53) listed their coach as their best source of information on dietary supplements. The results of this study offer the current literature some additional insight into trends in supplement use among high school student athletes. Practical implications suggest that it may be necessary to ensure coaches have sufficient knowledge about dietary supplements so that adolescent athletes are receiving accurate information.  相似文献

Immunostimulants, such as prodigiosan, levamisol and methyluracil, as well as their combinations with imuran, prednisolone or cyclophosphamide were studied for their effect on the delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) induced by dinitrofluorobenzene alcohol solutions applied in challenge doses to the floor of the auricle of mice. It was shown that the immunostimulants did not affect the DTH in intact mice. In mice treated with imuran the DTH was significantly increased only by prodigiosan. Prednisolone used for a prolonged period before and after the sensitization and cyclophosphamide administered 24 hours before the sensitization increased the DTH. According to the literature data it was connected with T-suppressor inhibition. With the use of cyclophosphamide it was also connected with B-suppressor inhibition. Under such conditions the DTH was decreased to the control level by prodigiosan after the use of prednisolone or by levamisol after the use of cyclophosphamide. This was probably associated with increasing of the suppressor effect of the macrophages and activation of the T-suppressor effect by levamisol. Methyluracil had no effect on the DTH.  相似文献

The distribution of resources is a crucial determinant of animals' space use (e.g., daily travel distance, monthly home range size, and revisitation patterns). We examined how variation in ecological parameters affected variability in space use patterns of western lowland gorillas, Gorilla gorilla gorilla. They are an interesting species for investigating this topic because key components of their diet are nonfruit items (herbaceous vegetation and tree leaves) that occur at low density and are sparsely distributed, and fruits, which show high spatiotemporal variation in availability. We estimated how availability of nonfruit foods and fruit, frugivory (proportion of feeding time consuming fruit), and swamps in areas used by the gorillas influenced daily travel distance, monthly home range size, and revisit frequency to grid cells in the home range of one habituated gorilla group in Loango National Park, Gabon. Using location data from 2015 to 2018, we found that the gorillas decreased their daily travel distance as both the density of nonfruit foods and the proportion of swamps in areas used increased. Daily travel distances were shorter when both frugivory and availability of fruit were higher, yet, daily travel distances were longer when availability of fruit was low but frugivory was still high. Furthermore, monthly home range size increased as frugivory increased and monthly revisit frequencies to an area increased as fruit availability of an area increased. In conclusion, the availability of both nonfruit and fruit influenced the gorillas' space use patterns. Gorillas decreased foraging effort when food availability was high but were willing to incur increasing foraging costs to feed on fruit when availability was low. This study highlights how animals have to adjust their space use with changing resource availability and it emphasizes the value of examining multiple parameters of space use.  相似文献
