The temporal diversity of 11 morphological features of both shell valves in eight cultivated samples of the Japanese scallop M. yessoensis from Alexeev Bay (Popov Island, Sea of Japan) at different ages and from different generations was analyzed. The sample diversity with respect to each investigated feature was observed. The sample differences in the studied features as well as shell valve variability within the sample were demonstrated to be determined by both mollusk age and sample generation. This phenomenon is considered to be the result of differences in the environmental influence on each mollusk generation under constant technological conditions.  相似文献

Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) is an important crop plant both from nutritional and economic points of view. The assessment of genetic diversity and population differentiation of date palms are evaluative for its dynamic conservation and sustainable utilization of its genetic diversity. Estimates of genetic diversity based on molecular markers and fruit characteristics were performed in samples of 23 date palms growing in Ahvaz city (Khuzestan province of Iran). Clustering based on fruit morphological features separated the cultivars in different groups. These cultivars differed significantly in morphological features (P =?0.001). Start codon targeted (SCoT) polymorphism markers revealed a good level of genetic variability (10.17 to 45.76%) in these cultivars. Moreover, STRUCTURE analysis revealed the presence of within-population genetic variability. Analysis of molecular variance revealed a significant genetic difference among date palms, while it showed a higher degree of within-cultivar genetic variability compared with that of among-population diversity. Some degree of common shared alleles occurred between date palm cultivars. Gst versus Nm analysis showed that some of the SCoT markers have a high discrimination power and may have a potential local adaptive value. The Mantel test showed a significant association (r =?0.40, P =?0.001) between morphological and genetic distances. Therefore, both morphological and SCoT molecular data can be used in genetic screening of date palms in the available germplasm.

Nine skull samples of the beaver Castor fiber, six samples of the raccoon dog Nyctereutes procyonoides, and 6 samples of the American mink Neovison vison were studied using phenetic and craniometric methods. Analysis of the phenofund structure suggests that in all of the studied species the emergence of novel character variations does not lead to their fixation with a significant frequency. Considerable morphological variability emerges in the contact zone of different autochtonous populations, of wild and breeding forms, as well as in geographically and reproductively isolated small groups of individuals. Morphological differences of introduced animals fit into the conception of species polymorphism and are smoothed over when separate colonies merge into metapopulations, which does not lead to the emergence of novel stable taxa.  相似文献

The spontaneous variability of the populations of C. albicans strains of different genesis in the morphological properties of their colonies and in the potential of the activity of their extracellular proteolytic and phospholipid enzymes has been studied. The isolated types of colonies, differing in their morphology, have the phenotypic character of variability. Different populations of strains exhibited variability in the activity of enzymes, depending on morphological variants isolated from these populations. Selected morphological variants with high potential of their proteolytic enzymes retained stability in this property for 5 generations and can be used in medical practice for the isolation of C. albicans antigens.  相似文献

The influence of inbreeding on several morphological characters as proboscis, wings, leg and palp segments was examined in strictly inbred lines of C. pipiens autogenicus, starting with females from a natural population. The results show the importance of ccological conditions, especially temperature, during larval development of the population. We report a progressive average size reduction from the second inbred generation. The length variability increases in practically all cases, depending on the degree of inbreeding, which is often more marked in certain organs. The symmetry regulation is strongly affected. We observe highly significant individual values in the highly inbred generations. The distribution values clearly mark a left/right disturbance. The progression of asymmetry as a function of the degree of inbreeding is more marked in certain organs in the two sexes. The results show the importance of the advantage of heterozygotes.  相似文献

Abstract Differences in heavy metal tolerance among separate populations of the same species have often been interpreted as local adaptation. Persistence of differences after removing the stressor indicates that mechanisms responsible for the increased tolerance were genetically determined. Drosophila subobscura Collin (Diptera: Drosophilidae) populations were sampled from two localities with different history of heavy metal pollution, and reared for eight generations in the laboratory on a standard medium and on media with different concentrations of lead (Pb). To determine whether flies from different natural populations exposed to the Pb‐contaminated media in the laboratory show population specific variability in fitness components over generations, experimental groups with different concentrations of lead were assayed in three generations (F2, F5, and F8) for fecundity, developmental time, and egg‐to‐adult viability. On the contaminated medium, fecundity was reduced in later generations and viability was increased, irrespective of the environmental origin of populations. For both populations, developmental time showed a tendency of slowing down on media with lead. Faster development was observed in later generations. Preadaptation to contamination, meaning higher fecundity, higher viability, and faster egg to adult development in all studied generations, was found in D. subobscura originating from the locality with a higher level of heavy metal pollution.  相似文献

An isolate of Ulva lactuca L. was brought into axenic culture in both defined synthetic medium and enriched seawater. Haploid clones were established and followed through several generations in both media. Plants possessing distromatic, partially distromatic or completely tubular blades in cross sections, as well as individuals that were completely distromatic in one area of the blade and tubular in another all developed from the same swarmer population. Variations in basal area morphology also occurred. Progeny from swarmers of any of these morphological types showed a similar mixture of morphological variation, indicating non-mutational variability in phenotypic expression of the blade and basal areas. A mechanism by which such variation may occur without mutation is discussed.  相似文献

Freshwater mussels (Unionoida) show high intraspecific morphological variability, and some shell morphological traits are believed to be associated with habitat conditions. It is not known whether and which of these ecophenotypic differences reflect underlying genetic differentiation or are the result of phenotypic plasticity. Using 103 amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers, we studied population genetics of three paired Unio pictorum populations sampled from two different habitat types (marina and river) along the River Thames. We found genetic differences along the Thames which were consistent with a pattern of isolation by distance and probably reflect limited dispersal via host fish species upon which unionoid larvae are obligate parasites. No consistent genetic differences were found between the two different habitat types suggesting that morphological differences in the degree of shell elongation and the shape of dorso-posterior margin are caused by phenotypic plasticity. Our study provides the first good evidence for phenotypic plasticity of shell shape in a European unionoid and illustrates the need to include genetic data in order properly to interpret geographic patterns of morphological variation.  相似文献

The status of golden loaches (genus Sabanejewia) in the region of Central Europe and Balkans is still ambiguous. The greatest controversy is caused by species Sabanejewia balcanica and S. bulgarica. Both species are characterized by a wide spectrum of morphological variability and overlapping of distinguishing features, which then lead to difficulties in their determination. Previous phylogenetic studies aimed on the resolving of their taxonomic status did not include samples from their type localities and so led to a lack of their true distribution in this region. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to identify taxonomic status of golden loaches populations in the region of the middle Danube basin and adjacent areas on the model territory of Slovakia. For this purpose, we used novelty approach (morphological, molecular, and microhabitat) and we also included the missing samples from the type localities of both species. Based on mtDNA all the Slovakian samples reflected haplotype richness revealed on the type locality of S. bulgarica, although the genetic distances from other representatives of the genus Sabanejewia occurring are not significant. Within the morphology, we have revealed a great measure of variability in studied populations, which is largely caused by different habitat conditions and thus representing a phenotypic plasticity of these fish.  相似文献

This study presents the carpological heterogeneity of Tragopogon pterodes, an endemic plant species from Balkan Peninsula. The goal of this paper was to determine the variability of morphological characters of achenes and assess the degree of their morphological differentiation relative to the position they occupy in the receptacle. Analysis included four different populations of T. pterodes and examination of 18 (8 qualitative and 10 quantitative) characters of achenes in total. Data analysis employed basic statistic, univariate (ANOVA, Tukey HSD) and multivariate (CDA, CA) analyses to check the level of heterocarpy in this species. The results indicate possible morphological differentiation of three groups of achenes (outer, median and inner achenes), depending of their position on the receptacle. The members of all three types were described, illustrated and compared. The variability of investigated carpological characters in this species is providing important information prior to their further taxonomic treatment.  相似文献

Spot blotch pathogen Bipolaris sorokiniana of wheat was investigated with threefold objectives: to establish a relationship between morphological and pathological variability of isolates, identify clonal genotype(s) acting as a source for the generation of new variability, and to determine the mechanism of generation of such variability in the pathogen. Isolates were collected from the leaves and seeds of field-grown wheat crop at four different sites in eastern Gangetic plains of India. Eighty-six clonal isolates derived from a single isolate (gray with white patches, Group III), which segregated in an equal proportion of parental and nonparental types, were studied. Morphological characters—i.e., colony morphology, growth rate, and sporulation—were studied along with disease-causing ability of the isolate clones. Clonal isolates were grouped into three categories. Microscopic analysis of nuclei was done to determine the causes of such variability. Morphological variability appeared to be related to the pathological variability. The isolate having epidemic potential appeared different than that acting as the reservoir for variability. The cause of such variability could be attributed either to hyphal fusion and heterokaryosis, nuclear migration and occurrence of multinucleate state, or a combination of these factors. Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) assay suggested that the unique fragments for different groups could be utilized as molecular markers to identify the isolates of specific groups.  相似文献

In the Black Sea mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis Lam., the dependence of variation in 21 morphological characters of the shell on the genotype at the polymorphic loci encoding unspecific esterases and leucine aminopeptidase was estimated by means of ANOVA in 12 samples differing in age and belonging to different generations. The genotype at these loci was found to have no constant influence on the dynamics of variation in any morphological character. The effect of the parameters of polymorphism was ambiguous: a factor having a significant effect on a certain character in one sample might have no such effect (or produce an effect on a different character) in another sample. A directional change in the significant effect of genotypes during a certain period of generation's lifetime was revealed. The dependence of the effect of polymorphism at the studied loci on ecological conditions is discussed.  相似文献

Peridinium cinctum is a common freshwater dinophyte with a long history of research. Erich Lindemann was the first to assess intraspecific variability in this species focusing on plate pattern variation. Since then, this issue has been neglected but with the application of DNA sequence diagnostics, a combination of morphological and molecular characters may enable taxonomic delimitations. Our aim was to identify distinct morphotypes using plate pattern as the main characteristic and then compare them to the geographic occurrence of particular ribotypes (as inferred from sequences of the Internal Transcribed Spacer: ITS) in samples from Central Europe. Approximately 200 observations were carried out under the inverse light microscope for each of a total of 15 strains. We observed two main variations from the abundant plate pattern in P. cinctum, namely an unusual position of the 2a plate and the irregular shape of the 1a plate. In 88 (predominantly clonal) strains, we identified five different ribotypes (submitted as 71 new GenBank entries) which had no clear correlation to the defined morphotypes and/or spatial occurrences. In four cases, we detected two distinct ribotypes at the same locality. However, samples collected south of the Danube River presented a different predominant morphotype from the rest of the samples, thus implying a potential biogeographic signal as inferred from morphology. In general, there is morphological and molecular variability in P. cinctum, which is under-studied and which may uncover geographic or ecological correlations or even the existence of cryptic species.  相似文献

Bipolaris sorokiniana is a phytopathogenic fungus that causes diseases in cereal crops. The high morphological, physiological, and genetic variability makes the control of this fungus a difficult task. The aim of this work was to study the virulence, morphological, and physiological variability of B. sorokiniana isolates. For this, 35 B. sorokiniana isolates from different geographic regions in Brazil and other countries were used. The isolates were evaluated for their morphological variability, considering mycelium color, sector formation, and growth rate. Based on these morphological characteristics, the isolates were grouped in five different morphological groups. Extracellular enzymes activity in solid medium, virulence in wheat seeds and seedlings, and analysis of total proteins by SDS-PAGE were evaluated for all isolates. Variations among the isolates were found for enzymatic activity, and esterase was the enzyme that showed the highest activity indices. The results obtained from infection of seeds and seedlings showed that isolates from the same geographical region and morphological group had different degrees of virulence. The total protein profile shown by the isolates varied in the number of bands and intensity, where some of them may be used to characterize the specie.  相似文献

The influence of the increase of the degree of homozygosity, obtained by successive consanguine cross-breeding, on the mean weights and the variability of the weights of twelve muscles of the Japanese quail (Coturnix c. japonica) was studied in four generations of females and two generations of males. It was found that the mean weights of the twelve muscles in both sexes showed a progressive reduction in the consecutive generations of consanguine crosses, this reduction being more marked in the males than in the females. These results support the hypotheses of Haldane and Lerner that heterozygotes are at an advantage, having a more active metabolism and a greater rate of growth, because their richer biochemical system and greater number of alleles coding the enzymes enables them to benefit from their environment to a greater extent and within wider limits. The rates of decrease vary from one muscle to the other within the limits of 5.3 and 16.6%. For certain muscles there are also notable differences between males and females. Contrary to the hypothesis that could be formed at first sight, the variability in weight increases considerably, in almost all cases, when the degree of homozygosity increases. Here again quite considerable differences are found in the evolution of the variability with the degree of homozygosity, from one muscle to the other and also between the two sexes. Comparison of the mean weight of the left and right elements of the bilateral muscles shows no significant preponderance. It was found, however, that slight asymmetries observed in the different groups of different consanguinity tend to be in the same direction for a given muscle. The variability of the weights of the left and right elements does not seem to be influenced by the degree of homozygosity in the females; in the males, however, an increase in homozygosity increases the variability of the weights of the left and right elements in certain cases. The mean degree of humidity and the variability of the ratio wet weight/dry weight are not changed significantly by the degree of consanguinity in females. In the males, the variability in the degree of humidity is less in heterozygotes, an indication of their better capacity for homeostatic regulation. The reduction in the mean weights and the increase in variability as the degree of homozygosity increases shows the importance of the advantage of heterozygotes, which has a bearing on theories of the genetics of populations and their application in rearing, and particularly to selection techniques.  相似文献

The biogeography and intraspecific variability of the eastern cavity‐nesting honeybee, Apis cerana, are not very well known. We studied the variability of this species in China using morphometrical methods together with restriction and sequence analysis of two different regions of mitochondrial DNA. Samples of A. cerana were collected from feral or traditionally managed colonies in 19 locations of the Chinese mainland, covering the main ecological regions. Worker bees from each sample were dissected and morphometric characters were measured. The data were analysed with multivariate statistical procedures. Data were supplemented by previously published Chinese samples from the Oberursel data bank and reference samples of A. cerana from adjacent countries. A mitochondrial DNA fragment containing a non‐coding region was amplified and analysed with the restriction enzyme DraI. This fragment was sequenced for two samples. For a subset of samples, the subunit 2 of the mitochondrial NADH gene was amplified and sequenced. Morphometric analysis revealed a high degree of variation, strongly associated with ecological zones and correlated with geographical and climatic parameters. Two main clusters were apparent, one comprised the bees from the southern tropical seasonal rain forest region, showing strong associations to the bees of Vietnam, Thailand and Myanmar. The second main cluster included the bees from the temperate deciduous broad‐leaved forest region, the subtropical evergreen broad‐leaved forest zone, the high, cold meadow and steppe region and the North, and showed increasing similarity to the bees of Korea and Japan. In particular, the bees from Qingzang plateau, on the fringe of the Ganshu province, were set apart by their exceptional body size, darkness and pilosity. There was no variation in DraI restriction patterns within China. Sequence variation of the mitochondrial ND2 region was consistent with geographic patterns of morphological variation. Bees of the South Yunnan region were set apart by characteristically broad abdominal sterna and wax mirrors, with this locally restricted trait transcending the main transition line at the northern limit of the tropical seasonal rain forest region. This northern limit appears to correspond to the separation line between A cerana indica and A. cerana cerana.  相似文献

A karyotype analysis of the Apodemus peninsulae (n = 355) from 41 trapping points from the Russian Far East has allowed us to identify B chromosomes in 87.9% of the animals, 61.7% of which are mosaics. Different levels of variability in the B chromosome numbers have been studied, including both the inter- and intrapopulational, as well as intraindividual variability (mosaicism). It was found that the frequencies of the occurrence of individuals with B chromosomes and mosaicism between different population samples were not constant. The range of the modal B chromosome number variability and variation of the xB index (zero to four; on average, the xB amounted to 1.67) were studied for the first time in different samples and populations of this species. Individuals with the predominant numbers of B chromosome (as a rule, zero to two) were revealed in both groups of animals (with stable and mosaic karyotypes), but the frequency was different in geographical regions. The spectra of B chromosome variability were wider in mosaics (zero to seven) compared to animals with stable karyotypes (zero to four). The importance of this for species of the high frequency of individuals with B chromosomes and with mosaicism has been discussed. The adaptive role of the low number of B chromosomes (one to two), as well as the imbalance of the B chromosome system for the species as a whole is assumed.  相似文献

The effects of temperature, ionic composition, and conductivity on growth rates of ten strains of Chaetoceros muelleri Lemmerman (mostly var. subsalsum Johan. & Rushf.) were studied. Lipid content of stressed and unstressed cells and fatty acid composition were also determined. Considerable physiological variability was observed in the ten strains, although principal components analysis of physiological data indicated that all strains fell into one of two major groups: C. muelleri (var. muelleri and var. subsalsum) and an undescribed Chaetoceros species morphologically close to C. muelleri var. subsalsum. A high degree of agreement was found among morphological, physiological, and biochemical data sets, indicating that physiological and biochemical data may be helpful in making taxonomic decisions in diatoms, particularly in taxa with few morphological characters. We also conclude that nonmorphological characters such as those employed in the present study can be used to test phylogenetic hypotheses formulated from traditional morphological data.  相似文献

Plants growing in different kinds of habitats are expected to show high morphological plasticity. Carex spicata Huds. occurs in different plant communities and shows distinct morphological variability of the inflorescences. Field observations carried out in different plant communities permitted us to hypothesize that the morphological variability of C. spicata inflorescences may to some degree be the result of the habitat. The objective of this study was to test that hypothesis for C. spicata by collecting inflorescences and measuring their morphological features from several populations in each of six plant communities: Agropyro‐Urticetum dioiceae, Arrhenatheretum elatioris, Lolio‐Cynosuretum, Lolio‐Plantaginetum, Trifolio‐Agrimonietum, and Stellario‐Deschampsietum. The following inflorescence features were analyzed: length of the lowest spikelet, distance between two lowest spikelets, length of inflorescence, number of spikelets, and length proportion of the lowest spikelet to the distance between the two lowest spikelets. We found that all analyzed morphological characters differed significantly among the plant communities. Furthermore, we found significant differences among populations within the six plant communities. Moreover, C. spicata inflorescences often have morphological features (i.e. a less crowded inflorescence with a relatively large distance between the two lowest spikelets) similar to the closely related species C. muricata L. Thus, the limited diagnostic value of inflorescence crowding, especially in vegetative or early fruiting phases, suggests that the taxonomic importance of this character should be reconsidered.  相似文献

The marine coccolithophorid Emiliania huxleyi is an important component of the marine carbon cycle because bloom development results in the export of calcium carbonate from the ocean surface to the abyss. Laboratory and field studies demonstrate significant biogeographical, ecological, physiological and morphological plasticity in E. huxleyi and suggest high underlying genetic variability. Here we describe seven polymorphic microsatellite loci from the E. huxleyi genome and their degree of polymorphism in clonal isolates of different geographical origin. Our results indicate a high degree of genetic diversity within E. huxleyi.  相似文献
