Immunocastration (IC, vaccination against gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH)) is one alternative to surgical castration (SC) for preventing sexual development and boar taint in male pigs. A temporal increase in performance has been described for IC pigs before the second vaccination against GnRH. The objective of this work was to assess the effects of IC on Iberian male and female pigs (fed diets of increasing CP content) on performance, nitrogen retention (NR) and digestibility, and carcass traits. Fifty-four pure Iberian pigs individually housed were allocated to a 3 × 3 factorial arrangement with three sex groups (IC males, IC females and SC males), three diets (153, 137 and 119 g CP/kg DM; 14 MJ metabolisable energy/kg DM) and six pigs per treatment combination. Pigs were vaccinated at 18 weeks of age (40 kg BW) and seven weeks later (70–80 kg BW) and fed at 0.9 × ad libitum on BW basis. Two digestibility and nitrogen balance assays were performed before and after the second vaccination, respectively. Pigs were slaughtered at 105 kg BW. Before the second vaccination, Iberian IC males showed higher growth rate (g/day), feed efficiency, NR (g/day) and efficiency of NR than the other groups (P < 0.001). The NR and efficiency of NR was 40% greater in IC v. SC males (P < 0.001). After the second vaccination, no differences in performance between sex groups were detected (P > 0.05). Growth rate and feed efficiency were higher in IC males than in the other groups for the whole experimental period (from the first vaccination to slaughter; P < 0.001). After the second vaccination, differences among sex groups in NR and the efficiency of NR disappeared (P > 0.05). NR efficiency was 0.177 on average. No significant effects of dietary CP were detected on performance. The NR was greater in pigs fed the 153 CP diet (17 to 37%; P > 0.05). Lean components of carcass (sirloin, loin and butt lean) were greater in IC males than in the other groups (0.001 < P < 0.05). There were no significant sex group × dietary CP interactions. Iberian IC males grew at higher rate, deposited more protein, and more efficiently, than Iberian SC males before the second vaccination against GnRH. Iberian IC females showed similar growth performance to SC males and intermediate protein deposition efficiency between IC and SC males. Despite the higher growth performance, protein deposition rate, and efficiency of protein deposition of IC males v. SC males, no significant differences in amino acid requirements were detected between them. 相似文献

Forty-eight mature US Spanish does (40 kg BW), from a herd selected for cashmere fiber growth, were used to investigate influences of the number of fetuses and levels of ME and CP in supplements during gestation and lactation on doe and kid performance. At 60 days of gestation, does with single or twin fetuses consumed mature Bermudagrass hay ad libitum and 1% BW (DM basis) of supplements with 18.6% or 28.5% CP (LP and HP, respectively) and 2.2 or 2.8 Mcal/kg ME (DM basis; LE and HE, respectively). The HE-HP supplement was offered at 1.5% BW (DM basis) for 15 days after birth, and does received the same supplement treatments as in gestation thereafter until weaning at 50 days after parturition. For a 50-day post-weaning period, kids consumed ad libitum the HE-LP supplement. BW at 90 days of gestation (41.4 vs 38.4 kg; P<0.10), BW before parturition (46.1 vs 41.7 kg; P<0.05), BW loss from parturition to day 21 of lactation (8.38 vs 5.25 kg; P<0.05), litter birth weight (5.47 vs 2.75 kg; P<0.05) and plasma concentrations of β-hydroxybutyrate (0.33 vs 0.29 mM; P<0.05) and NEFA (538 vs 434 mEq/l; P<0.05) were greater for does with twin vs single kids. BW at weaning was similar between single and twin kids (P>0.10; 8.31 and 7.63, respectively). Kid BW and cashmere fiber weight after the post-weaning period were affected by interactions (P<0.05) between number of fetuses and supplement ME level; kid BW was 12.3, 14.7, 14.6 and 13.2 kg (SE = 1.12 and 0.68 kg for singles and twins, respectively), and kid cashmere weight was 86, 109, 106 and 102 g (SE = 8.5 and 5.0 g for singles and twins, respectively) for single-HE, single-LE, twin-HE and twin-LE, respectively. In conclusion, effects of supplements differing in levels of ME and in ingredient composition for US Spanish does in gestation and lactation had dissimilar impacts on post-weaning BW and cashmere weight of single and twin kids. However, because of the limited number of observations and the high variability among animals in measures such as cashmere fibre growth, further experimentation concerning the potential for effects of nutritional plane of does on cashmere growth by kids is warranted. 相似文献

A performance study and a nitrogen balance study (2×3 factorial) were conducted to investigate the interaction between lactose level (215 and 125 g/kg) (lactofeed 70; 860 g whey permeate/kg, 140 g soya bean meal/kg, Volac International, UK) and crude protein (CP) concentration (160, 185 and 210 g/kg) on post-weaning piglet performance, nitrogen metabolism, faecal microbiology and faecal volatile fatty acid concentrations. In the performance trial, 252 piglets (7.6 kg; 33 days of age) were assigned to one of six dietary treatments following a 12-day period on a commercial creep diet (17 MJ/kg DE, 16 g lysine/kg). The experimental diets were fed for 28 days (days 12–40) and were formulated to have identical digestible energy (15 MJ/kg) and total lysine (14.5 g/kg) contents. In the N balance experiment, 24 boars (20 kg live weight) were offered the same diets as in the performance trial. Faecal samples were collected for selected microbial populations. There was an interaction (P<0.05) between lactose and CP concentration in daily gain (ADG) and daily feed intake (ADFI) (P<0.01) during the weaner period (days 12–40). At the high lactose level there was a linear increase in ADG and ADFI with increasing CP. However, at the low lactose level there was no increase in ADG or ADFI above the medium CP. Pigs offered 215 g lactose/kg had a higher dry matter (P<0.001), organic matter (P<0.001), energy (P<0.001), nitrogen (P<0.01) and neutral detergent fibre (P<0.05) coefficient of total tract apparent digestibility compared to pigs offered 125 g lactose/kg. There was an interaction between lactose and CP concentration for nitrogen intake (NI) (P<0.05), urine pH (P<0.05) and selected faecal microbial populations. At the high CP level, pigs offered diets containing 215 g lactose/kg had a higher NI and a lower urine pH than pigs offered 125 g lactose/kg (P<0.05). However, the inclusion of lactose had no significant effect on either NI or urine pH at the low or medium CP concentration. At the low lactose level there was a linear increase in faecal E. coli population and a linear decrease in faecal Lactobacilli population with increasing CP. However at high lactose levels CP concentration had no effect on either E. coli or Lactobacilli populations. Pigs offered 215 g lactose/kg had a significantly higher Bifidobacteria population compared to pigs offered 125 g lactose/kg. There was a linear decrease in Bifidobacteria population as CP increased. In conclusion, at the high lactose level there was a linear increase in ADG and ADFI with increasing CP concentrations. There was no increase in these parameters above 185 g CP/kg at the low lactose level. 相似文献

Vitamin A is easily degraded by environmental factors. Therefore, it is very important to add antioxidants during Vitamin A production. In the past, ethoxyquin (EQ) was widely used, but recent studies have found that it has potential toxicity. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the antioxidant activities of 4 antioxidants in vitro: EQ, butylated hydroxytoluene, α-tocopherol and L-ascorbic acid sodium salt (Vitamin C sodium). In vitro experiments showed that Vitamin C sodium had better antioxidant capacity. Then, we explored the effects of different antioxidant types of Vitamin A on the growth performance, immune function and antioxidant capacity of weaned pigs. In total, 288 weaned piglets with an initial mean BW of 8.34 ± 0.02 kg at 30 days old were randomly divided into three groups with four replicates and 24 piglets per replicate for 35 days of feeding. The experimental diets were as follows: i) basal diet without external Vitamin A (NC); ii) basal diet supplemented with 12 000 IU/kg EQ Vitamin A and iii) basal diet supplemented with 12 000 IU/kg Vitamin C sodium Vitamin A. On day 36, two pigs from each replicate were selected to collect serum samples. The in vivo results showed that pigs in the EQ Vitamin A and Vitamin C sodium Vitamin A groups had significantly higher final weight and average daily gain (P < 0.05). During the trial, the levels of IgG and glutathione peroxidase in the EQ Vitamin A and Vitamin C sodium Vitamin A groups were significantly higher than those in the NC group (P < 0.05), and the malondialdehyde content was significantly lower (P < 0.05). On the 36th day, the levels of IgA and total antioxidant capacity in the Vitamin C sodium Vitamin A group were significantly higher than those in the EQ Vitamin A and NC (P < 0.05) groups. Thus, Vitamin C sodium Vitamin A can significantly improve the growth performance, antioxidant capacity and immune function of weaned pigs. Meanwhile, Vitamin C sodium may replace EQ as an antioxidant additive for Vitamin A. 相似文献

Objective: Patients with Graves disease (GD) tend to gain weight after treatment, but it remains unknown if weight gain is associated with an increase in the visceral and/or subcutaneous fat areas (VFA, SFA).Methods: We enrolled 25 newly diagnosed GD patients (22 females, median age 33.0 years) and studied their clinical parameters, and VFA and SFA measured by a dual bioelectric impedance analysis. We divided them into 2 groups based on the rates of change in the VFA and SFA, and we compared clinical parameters at the baseline between the groups to evaluate factors that influence increases in the VFA and/or SFA with treatment. Results: The patients' body weight (BW), VFA, and SFA were significantly increased after a 6-month treatment (BW: from 54.3 ± 10.3 kg to 58.0 ± 11.2 kg; P<.001; VFA: from 47.1 ± 21.3 cm2 to 54.7 ± 23.4 cm2; P = .004; SFA: from 159.8 ± 85.9 cm2 to 182.2 ± 82.9 cm2; P = .008). The percent changes of BW correlated with the SFA (ρ = .591, P = .002), but not with the VFA. The patients with larger VFA increases had significantly less VFA at the baseline compared to those with smaller increases, expressed as median and interquartile range (33.9 cm2 [22.7 to 47.5 cm2] versus 54.5 cm2 [45.2 to 64.0], respectively; P = .011). A larger increase in the SFA was negatively associated with serum alkaline phosphatase. An increase in the SFA was associated with free triiodothyronine (T3) in a multivariate logistic analysis (odds ratio: 0.80 [0.59 to 0.97]; P = .013).Conclusion: The patients' BW, VFA, and SFA were increased after GD treatment. The increase in SFA seemed to contribute to weight gain and was associated with a low baseline level of free T3.Abbreviations: ALP = alkaline phosphatase; BMI = body mass index; BW = body weight; GD = Graves disease; SFA = subcutaneous fat area; T3 = triiodothyronine; T4 = thyroxine; TG = triglycerides; VFA = visceral fat areas 相似文献

Metabolic experiments were conducted for each Thai native (TN) and Anglo Nubian–TN 50% (AN × TN) bucks, 26.5–38 kg BW and 35–52 months of age, by assigning the following concentrate diets, which had four levels of CP concentrations, T1: 14%, T2: 21%, T3: 28% and T4: 35%, on a DM basis. The animals were fed the concentrates at a rate of 1% of their BW and had ad libitum access to Paspalum plicatulum hay. As the CP level increased, digestibility of CP, N excretion in urine and N retention increased (P < 0.01). No significant differences of DM digestibility among the CP levels of diet and between the breeds of bucks were observed. The AN × TN had higher DM intake than TN (P < 0.05, 40.9 g/(kg BW0.75 day) versus 36.0 g/(kg BW0.75 day)), thus N intake of AN × TN was higher than that of TN (P < 0.01, 0.99 g/(kg BW0.75 day) versus 0.90 g/(kg BW0.75 day)). Digestibility of CP and blood urea N concentrations of TN were higher than those of AN × TN (P < 0.05, 69.8% versus 64.0% and 32.2 mg/dl versus 26.7 mg/dl, respectively). The AN × TN tended to retain more N than TN in the higher CP feeding condition of T3 (0.19 g/(kg BW0.75 day) versus 0.11 g/(kg BW0.75 day)) and T4 (0.25 g/(kg BW0.75 day) versus 0.17 g/(kg BW0.75 day)). Digestibility of NDF and ADF, and TDN of TN were higher than those of AN × TN (P < 0.05, 61.1% versus 55.9%, 49.6% versus 43.5% and 65.8% versus 62.4%, respectively). The overall mean DE was 109 kcal/(kg BW0.75 day), and no significant difference of DE among CP levels nor breeds of bucks was observed. Thai native was superior to AN × TN in digestibility of N and fiber fractions at the maintenance level of DE, which might have overcome inferiority of TN to AN × TN in amount of N and energy intake caused by the lower DMI. It is likely that TN goats are well adapted to fodder shortage condition due to their efficient utilization of nutrients. 相似文献

Objective: Levothyroxine (LT4) replacement in hypothyroid obese patients is poorly understood. We assessed whether the LT4 regimen required to achieve euthyroidism differs between nonobese and obese hypothyroid females. Methods: We retrospectively identified nonobese and obese females who received LT4 starting with a standard dose of 1.6 μg/kg after total thyroidectomy for preoperative diagnosis of benign goiter. We examined the association between LT4 dosage required to achieve euthyroid state (thyroid-stimulating hormone [TSH] 0.4–2.5 mIU/L) and patient characteristics using linear regression models with and without adjustment for age, ethnicity, medication use, and postoperative hypoparathyroidism. Results: We identified 32 females (15 nonobese/17 obese) who achieved euthyroid state. Obese patients weighed more (104.1 ± 22.5 vs. 64.9 ± 10.0 kg, P<.0001) and required a higher final LT4 than nonobese (146 ± 38 vs. 102 ± 12 μg, P = .0002) but LT4 requirements per kg total body weight (TBW) were similar (1.60 ± 0.29 vs. 1.42 ± 0.38 μg/kg, P = .15). LT4 dose per kg ideal body weight (IBW) was higher in obese than in nonobese females (2.62 ± 0.67 vs. 1.88 ± 0.28 μg/kg, P = .0004) and this difference persisted after adjustments (P<.05). During LT4 titration, 47% and 20% of obese and nonobese patients had subnormal TSH episodes, respectively (P = .11). After taking LT4 compliance, malabsorption, and competing medication use into consideration, we found marked LT4 dose variability in obese patients. Patients who needed a mean daily LT4 dose ≤150 mg (124 ± 16 μg/day) compared with >150 μg (198 ± 4 μg/day) demonstrated lower LT4 per TBW (1.25 ± 0.18 vs. 1.84 ± 0.43 μg/kg, P = .03) and IBW (2.28 ± 0.47 vs. 3.44 ± 0.18 μg/kg, P<.0001), respectively. Conclusion: The standard approach to LT4 replacement in obese and nonobese females after thyroidectomy is imprecise. Mean daily LT4 doses in obese and nonobese patients were similar if expressed per kg TBW, though there was variability in the final LT4 among obese patients. We suggest initiating LT4 at a dose lower than that routinely recommended in obese females.Abbreviations:AACE = American Association of Clinical EndocrinologistsATA = American Thyroid AssociationBMI = body mass indexIBW = ideal body weightLT4 = levothyroxineTBW = total body weightTSH = thyroid-stimulating hormone 相似文献

Objective: To assess 12-month body weight (BW) and body composition changes in normoglycemic women with midlife weight gain, after dietary and pharmacologic interventions targeting hyperinsulinemia. Methods: EMPOWIR (Enhance the Metabolic Profile of Women With Insulin Resistance; NCT00618072) was a double-blind, placebo-controlled, 12-month trial of women with >20-pound weight gain, normal glucose tolerance test, and increased area-under-the-curve insulin. Subjects (mean ± SD, 46.7 ± 6.5 years of age; body mass index, 30.8 ± 2.8 kg/m2; 50% white) attended 4 nutrition workshops to introduce a novel carbohydrate-modified diet (CMD) and were then randomized to one of three arms for 6 months (phase 1): CMD alone (D), or in combination with metformin (M), or metformin + rosiglitazone (MR), with rerandomization of the D group to one of the active treatment arms (phase 2, months 7 through 12). Repeated measure analysis of variance was used to assess BW at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months in 32 subjects with 12-month data; paired t tests compared baseline and 12-month dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry–derived body composition. Results: Mean (±SD) BW decreased significantly at 12 months in the M arm: 85.1 ± 8.5 kg to 79.8 ± 9.0 kg (P = .0003), with 54% of variance in weight over time explained by M treatment. Mean (±SD) percent android fat decreased significantly in the M and D arms: 53.5 ± 4.8% to 49.3 ± 7.6% (P = .010) and 52.9 ± 6.2% to 48.1 ± 8.7% (P = .021).Conclusion: In combination with a novel carbohydrate modified diet, metformin enhanced 12-month weight loss and improved body composition in ethnically diverse normoglycemic, hyperinsulinemic women with midlife weight gain. These findings suggest that EMPOWIR's easily implemented dietary interventions, alone and in combination with pharmacotherapies that target hyperinsulinemia, merit additional investigation in larger, long-term studies.Abbreviations:ANOVA = analysis of varianceBC = body compositionBW = body weightCMD = carbohydrate-modified dietD = diet alone groupDXA = dual-energy X-ray absorptiometryEMPOWIR = Enhance the Metabolic Profile of Women With Insulin ResistanceM = metformin groupMR = metformin + rosiglitazone group 相似文献

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate levothyroxine (LT4) replacement daily doses in patients with central hypothyroidism (CeH) and compare them with those adequate for patients with primary hypothyroidism (P-HYPO).Methods: We included 53 patients with CeH and 57 with P-HYPO, matched by sex, age, weight, and body mass index, in the period of 1 year. At the time of inclusion, all presented a stable and adequate dose of LT4 for at least 3 months, considering as adequate the dose associated with normal thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels and free thyroxine (T4) in P-HYPO patients, and free T4 levels in CeH patients. Results: The absolute daily dose of LT4 differed significantly between the two groups, 103.0 ± 27.1 μg (CeH) and 89.3 ± 32.0 μg (P-HYPO) (P = .017), even after adjustment for age, gender, and free T4 (P = .04). The LT4 dose adjusted to weight was also higher after adjustment for age, gender and free T4 (P = .04), with an average of 1.3 ± 0.4 μg/kg (CeH) and 1.2 ± 0.4 μg/kg (P-HYPO). Sheehan syndrome patients had a lower absolute daily dose of LT4 (P = .001), and patients who underwent pituitary radiotherapy required higher doses (P = .008). There was no difference in the daily dose of LT4 according to other pituitary hormone deficiencies. Conclusion: The results reinforce the relevance of a careful individualization of LT4 replacement in CeH management and the need for new markers for proper LT4 replacement therapy in such cases.Abbreviations: BMI = body mass index; CeH = central hypothyroidism; GH = growth hormone; LT4 = levothyroxine; P-HYPO = primary hypothyroidism; T3 = triiodothyronine; T4 = thyroxine; TSH = thyroid-stimulating hormone 相似文献

Objective: The total cortisol (TC) response may be measured during the glucagon stimulation test (GST) for growth hormone (GH) reserve in order to assess the integrity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Measurements of TC are unreliable in conditions of albumin and cortisol-binding globulin (CBG) alterations (e.g., hypoproteinemia or CBG deficiency). We aimed to measure the serum free cortisol (sFC) response to the GST in children and adolescents and determine whether it could predict the GH response to glucagon stimulation. Methods: Infants and children with either short stature or growth attenuation who were referred for evaluation of GH reserve underwent the GST.Results: The study population consisted of 103 subjects (62 females), median age 3.9 years (range, 0.5–14). The mean basal and peak TC levels were 13.3 ± 6.7 μg/dL and 29.6 ± 8.8 μg/dL, respectively. The mean basal and peak sFC levels were 0.7 ± 0.8 μg/dL and 1.7 ± 1.1 μg/dL, respectively. There was a negative correlation between peak TC and age (r = -0.3, P = .007) but not between peak sFC and age (r = -0.09, P = .36). Ninety-five percent of the patients had peak TC levels >15.8 μg/dL and peak sFC levels >0.6 μg/dL.Conclusion: Our results on a cohort of healthy short-statured children can serve as reference values for the sFC response during GST. Based on these results, we propose peak TC levels >15.8 μg/dL and peak sFC levels >0.6 μg/dL for defining normalcy of the HPA axis during the GST in children and adolescents.Abbreviations:ACTH = adrenocorticotrophic hormoneBMI = body mass indexCBG = cortisol-binding globulinGH = growth hormoneGST = glucagon stimulation testHPA = hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenalSDS = standard deviation scoresFC = serum free cortisolTC = total cortisol 相似文献

Objective: Craniopharyngiomas (CPs) are benign brain tumors presenting frequently in childhood and are treated by surgery with or without radiotherapy. About 50% of cured patients suffer from eating disorders and obesity due to hypothalamic damage, as well as hypopituitarism, necessitating subsequent hormone substitution therapy. Gastric bypass surgery has been reported to be an efficient treatment strategy for morbid hypothalamic obesity. However, so far it is unknown whether oral hormone substitution is affected by impaired intestinal drug absorption, potentially leading to severe hypopituitarism or pituitary crisis. Methods: Four morbidly obese CP patients with panhypopituitarism treated by gastric bypass surgery were included in this retrospective analysis. Dosages of hormone substitution therapy, blood concentrations of hormones, potential complications of impaired drug absorption, and anthropometric characteristics were investigated pre- and postoperatively after 6 to 14 months and 13 to 65 months. Results: In all CP patients (3 female/1 male; baseline body mass index, 49 ± 7 kg/m2), gastric bypass resulted in distinct weight loss (-35 ± 27 kg). In follow-up examinations, mean daily dosage of thyroid hormone (levothyroxinebaseline 156 ± 44 μg/day versus levothyroxinefollow-up 150 ± 30 μg/day), hydrocortisone (hydrocortisonebaseline 29 ± 12 mg/day versus hydrocortisonefollow-up 26 ± 2 mg/day), growth-hormone (somatotropinbaseline 0.9 ± 0.5 mg/day versus somatotropinfollow-up 1.0 ± 0.4 mg/day), and desmopressin (desmopressinbaseline 222 ± 96 μg/day versus desmopressinfollow-up 222 ± 96 μg/day) substitution was unchanged. No patient developed adrenal insufficiency. Oral thyroid/hydrocortisone absorption testing performed in 1 patient indicated sufficient gastrointestinal drug absorption after bariatric surgery. Conclusion: Our preliminary results suggest that oral hormone substitution therapy is not impaired following gastric bypass operation in CP patients with morbid obesity, indicating that it might be a safe and effective treatment strategy.Abbreviations:BMI = body mass indexCP = craniopharyngiomafT4 = free thyroxineGH = growth hormoneIGF-1 = insulin-like growth factor 1 相似文献

The dietary energy value of solvent-extracted canola meal (CM) is limited by its relative high fibre content. The fibre-rich hull of canola is denser than the oil-free cotyledons, so these seed components partially fractionate in a stream of air. Air classification thus separates CM into a low-fibre, light-particle fraction and a high-fibre, heavy-particle fraction of interest for feeding monogastric and ruminant species, respectively. Crude fibre (CF), acid detergent fibre (ADF) and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) in light-particle fraction were reduced by 96, 34 and 28% compared with CM (83 CF, 165 ADF, 238 NDF g/kg, as-is). Brassica (B) napus, Brassica juncea, or their fractions were evaluated feeding 288 weaned pigs (7.1 kg) for 37 d as a 2 × 3 factorial with 12 replicate pens per treatment. Wheat-based diets including 200 g of test feedstuff/kg provided 10.5 and 10.0 MJ net energy (NE)/kg and 1.27 and 1.15 g standardised ileal digestible lysine/MJ NE and were fed for 9 and 28 d, respectively. Pen feed added, orts, and individual pig body weight were measured weekly to calculate average daily feed intake (ADFI), average daily gain (ADG), and feed efficiency (G:F). Pen faecal samples were collected on d 16 and 17 to calculate diet apparent total tract digestibility coefficients (CATTD) of dry matter (DM), gross energy (GE), crude protein (CP) and digestible energy (DE) value. Pigs fed B. juncea had 3 and 2% higher (P<0.001) CATTD of DM (0.82 vs. 0.79) and GE (0.84 vs. 0.82) than pigs fed B. napus. Feeding the light-particle fraction increased (P<0.001) CATTD of DM (0.82 vs. 0.79), GE (0.84 vs. 0.82), and CP (0.79 vs. 0.77) by 4, 3 and 3% compared with CM, respectively. For the entire trial, pigs fed B. juncea consumed 33 g/d less (P<0.001) feed (723 vs. 756 g/d), had 0.02 higher (P<0.05) G:F (0.735 vs. 0.718 g:g), but ADG (503 vs. 514 g/d) was not different (P>0.05) compared to pigs fed B. napus. Feeding pigs the light-particle fractions did not affect (P>0.05) ADFI (741 vs. 736 g/d), increased (P<0.05) G:F 0.02 (0.739 vs. 0.721 g:g) and tended to increase (P=0.07) ADG (519 vs. 501 g/d) by 18 g/d compared to CM. In conclusion, air classification of canola meal increased diet nutrient digestibility, but only modestly increased G:F of weaned pigs due to dietary fibre reduction. 相似文献

Objective: To investigate in vivo correlates of erectile dysfunction (ED) in male patients with acromegaly. Methods: Fifty-one male patients with acromegaly were assessed by the International Index of Erectile Function-5 and Acromegaly Quality of Life (Acro-QoL) questionnaires. The measurement of serum nitric oxide (NO) were performed in patients and age-matched nonacromegalic controls. Results: Among 51 patients analyzed, 32 (62.7%) had ED. Patients with ED showed lower Acro-QoL scores regarding global (69.8 ± 17.7 versus 79.4 ± 11.2; P = .035) and personal relationship dimensions (59.6 ± 22.1 versus 76.8 ± 17.6; P = .012) than non-ED patients. ED patients were older (44.5 ± 11.2 years versus 33.2 ± 8.5 years; P = .04) and showed higher growth hormone (GH) levels (15.5 μg/L [interquartile range of 9.5 to 34.5 μg/L] versus 5.9 μg/L [interquartile range of 3.4 to 13.9 μg/L]; P = .001) compared to non-ED patients. The cutoff values for identifying ED were 7.9 μg/L for random GH and 5.3 μg/L for GH nadir after oral administration of 75 g of glucose. There was no significant difference in total testosterone levels between the two groups (6.36 ± 4.24 nmol/L versus 9.54 ± 5.50 nmol/L; P = .299). The NO levels in patients with acromegaly were significantly lower than those in nonacromegalic controls (8.77 ± 1.78 μmol/L versus 19.19 ± 5.02 μmol/L, respectively; P = .049). Furthermore, the NO levels were even lower in ED patients than those in non-ED patients (5.14 ± 0.98 μmol/L versus 12.09 ± 3.44 μmol/L; P = .027).Conclusion: Our study showed that ED is prevalent in male acromegalic patients and may be associated with systemic endothelial dysfunction induced by excessive GH. Further studies investigating the mechanism of GH and ED are required.Abbreviations: Acro-QoL = Acromegaly Quality of Life; ED = erectile dysfunction; FSH = follicle-stimulating hormone; GH = growth hormone; IGF-1 = insulin-like growth factor 1; IIEF-5 = international index of erection function-5; LH = luteinizing hormone; MRI = magnetic resonance imaging; NO = nitric oxide; OGTT = oral glucose tolerance test; QoL = quality of life; ROC = receiver operating characteristic 相似文献

In Exp. 1, 20 ewes of mixed breeding were fed grass hay : straw mixtures, assigned to one of four supplemental treatments and evaluated during six collection periods. Supplemental treatments were control (no supplement), and low, medium, and high levels (5.2%, 22.1%, and 41.3% of DM, respectively) of undegraded intake protein (UIP). Supplements were formulated to be similar in degraded intake protein (DIP; 21%). Digestibilities of DM, OM, and CP were increased (P < 0.10) with protein supplementation and in medium and high compared with low UIP supplemented ewes. Digestibility of CP also was increased (P < 0.10) in ewes on high compared with medium treatments. Serum insulin was not influenced (P > 0.10) by UIP treatment, except in collection period four. In contrast, serum glucose and growth hormone were not influenced (P > 0.10) by UIP treatment. In Exp. 2, four wether lambs fed the same treatments as in Exp. 1, were used in two 4 × 4 Latin squares trials. In trial 1 lambs received a grass hay diet (6.7% CP) and in trial 2 lambs were fed 40 : 60 blend (6.6% CP) of grass hay and spring wheat straw. In both trials, N intake, urinary N, N digestion, apparent N absorption, and N retention were increased (P < 0.10) with protein supplementation. In addition, in trial 1, urinary N, N digestion, and apparent N absorption were increased (P < 0.10) in medium and high compared with low UIP and also in high compared with medium UIP treatments. In trial 2 of Exp. 2, total feed intake (g/kg BW), digestibility of DM and OM, BW, and fecal N were increased (P < 0.10) with protein supplementation. Organic matter digestion, BW, N intake, and N retention were increased by medium and high compared with low UIP. Fecal N, BW, N intake, and N retention were increased (P < 0.10) in high compared with medium UIP. These data indicate that increasing levels of UIP supplementation increases DM, OM, and CP (N) digestibility, serum urea N concentration, and N retention in sheep fed low quality forage. 相似文献

This experiment was conducted for 90 d to assess the effect of feeding graded levels of concentrate allowance on rumen fermentation characteristics, performance and nutrient utilisation of weaner lambs on restricted or high concentrate allowance using 60 weaner lambs of initial average live weight of 13.90 kg BW in a randomized design. The experimental treatments were 15 or 25 g kg−1 BW or ad libitum concentrate allowance. Roughage source which contained Khejri (Prosopis cineratia) and Siris (Albizia lebback) leaves in 50:50 ratio was offered ad libitum to all the animals. Lambs supplemented with 15 g or ad libitum concentrate had similar dry matter intake (4.2 kg/100 kg BW) but significantly (p < 0.01) lower than 25 g concentrate supplemented group (4.9 kg/100 kg BW). Organic matter and CP intakes increased with increasing concentrate supplementation. Apparent digestibilities of dry matter, organic matter, CP, NDF, ADF and cellulose were significantly (p < 0.01) higher in ad libitum concentrate supplemented than 15 and 25 g concentrate supplemented lambs. Daily ME intake was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in 25 g and ad libitum concentrate supplemented lambs while ME intake kg−1 gain was lower in ad libitum concentrate supplemented lambs (57 MJ kg−1 gain) than those supplemented with 15 or 25 g concentrate (91 MJ kg−1 gain). Generally, average daily gain increased with increasing levels of concentrate supplementation. Ad libitum concentrate supplemented lambs had significantly (p < 0.01) higher daily gains (151 g) than 15 and 25 g concentrate supplemented lambs (77 and 98 g, respectively). Feed efficiency was similar for 15 and 25 g concentrate supplemented lambs but significantly (p < 0.01) lower than the ad libitum concentrate supplemented lambs. All animals were in positive N-balance and the N-balance increased with increasing concentrate supplementation. Mean rumen fluid pH was significantly (6.6, p < 0.01) lower in ad libitum concentrate supplemented lambs compared to 15 or 25 g concentrate fed lambs (6.9). Rumen NH3-N and total-N-concentrations peaked at 3 h post-feeding. Optimum rumen fluid pH, better nutrient digestibilities, higher N-retention improved growth by 49% of ad libitum concentrate fed lambs. 相似文献

The effects of increasing dietary levels of crude protein on growth, feed intake, feed efficiency and composition of gain in male Saanen kids were studied. Four groups of four kids each initially weighing 12.1±0.18 kg and having a weight gain of 195±16 g/d were penned individually and fed for 73 to 124 days up to 25 kg of BW. They were fed chaffed wheat straw (45 g CP/kg DM) which had been molasses sprayed (10%) and pelleted concentrates containing 8.7, 11.7, 14.4 and 17.6% crude protein (CP) on DM basis, the ratio of straw to concentrate being 1:5. Kids were fed controlled to satiation in which case small amounts of the feeds were offered about five times a day as long as the kids wanted to eat. Retention of protein, fat and energy were calculated from their initial and final concentrations in the empty body homogenates of the slaughtered kids. With increasing CP level in the diet, feed intake increased from 448 to 608 g DM/d, weight gain from 94 to 181 g/d, retention of protein from 9.7 to 27.8 g/d, retention of fat from 9.6 to 19.1 g/d and feed efficiency improved from 4.79 to 3.39 kg DM/kg weight gain. Protein composition of gain increased from 103 to 154 g/kg BWG while fat (103–105 g/kg BWG) remained constant. Regression analyses showed that BWG can be optimized at 136 g CP/kg DM and protein retention at 180 g CP/kg DM, whereas, dietary nitrogen was utilized most efficiently at 120 g CP/kg DM. Extrapolated from the regression equations, maintenance N requirement of the kids at zero N-retention and at zero BWG were 0.38 and 0.16 g N/kg W0.75, respectively. Recommended dietary CP concentrations and maintenance N requirements depend on the traits desired. 相似文献

The objective of the current study was to investigate the preference of weaned pigs given the choice of diets supplemented with dl-methionine (DLM) or liquid dl-methionine hydroxy analog-free acid (MHA-FA). A basal diet (BD) was formulated to contain 2.5 g methionine (Met) per kilogram of diet. The experimental diets included: (1) BD, (2) BD + 1 g DLM/kg, (3) BD + 2 g DLM/kg, (4) BD + 1.13 g MHA-FA/kg, (5) BD + 1.52 g MHA-FA/kg, (6) BD + 2.25 g MHA-FA/kg and (7) BD + 3.05 g MHA-FA/kg. Sixty weaned mixed-sex pigs were allotted to 5 treatment groups with 12 pig replicates per treatment in a randomized complete block design. During a 35-day experimental period, pigs in treatment group 1 received the BD whereas pigs in the other 4 treatment groups were allowed to choose between a pair of diets with either added 1 g DLM/kg in combination with either 1.13 or 1.52 g MHA-FA/kg or 2 g DLM/kg in combination with 2.25 or 3.05 g MHA-FA/kg, respectively. Pigs were housed in individual pens and had free access to feed and water. Daily feed intake (FI) was used as an indicator of diet preference. Cumulatively, pigs showed a preference (% of total FI) for the diet added with 1 g/kg DLM at 74% (P<0.05) in group 2, and 65% in group 3. Irrespective of the level of MHA-FA supplementation (2.25 or 3.05 g/kg), a preference for the diet supplemented with 2 g DLM/kg was 84% (P<0.05) in groups 4 and 5. During the entire period, pigs consistently (P<0.05) consumed more and preferred the diets supplemented with DLM more than the diets supplemented with MHA-FA in groups 2, 4 and 5. The preference for diets supplemented with DLM was more pronounced at higher Met supplementation levels. Feeding pigs a pair of diets supplemented with DLM or MHA-FA improved (P<0.05) the final body weight, daily weight gain, and FCR. The performance of pigs among the Met-supplemented groups was not different. In conclusion, when given a choice pigs preferred the diets supplemented with DLM more than the diets supplemented with liquid MHA-FA. 相似文献

Thirty-six Spanish goat wethers (196 ± 12.9 days of age and 17.5 ± 4.60 kg BW at experiment initiation) from a herd previously selected for cashmere growth were used to determine effects and interactions of ad libitum consumption of diets differing in concentrations of CP (10% and 15%) and ME (2.00, 2.35 and 2.70 Mcal/kg; DM basis) on growth and cashmere fiber production in an 84-day, fall-season experiment. DM intake was greater (P < 0.05) for diets with 15% vs. 10% CP (736 vs. 655 g/day) but similar among ME concentrations (P > 0.10). ADG was greater (P < 0.02) for 15% vs. 10% CP (79 vs. 53 g/day) and increased linearly (P < 0.10) as dietary ME level increased (58, 62 and 78 g/day for 2.00, 2.35 and 2.70 Mcal/kg ME, respectively). Total fleece weight at the end of the experiment was similar (P > 0.10) between CP levels but increased linearly (P < 0.03) as ME concentration in the diet increased (197, 239 and 227 g/day). Guard hair weight was not affected by dietary treatments (P > 0.10); cashmere length was similar among treatments (P > 0.10); and cashmere fiber diameter was not altered by dietary ME level (P > 0.10) but was greater (P < 0.05) for 15% vs. 10% CP (16.92 vs. 16.06 μm). Cashmere weight was influenced by an interaction between CP and ME levels (P < 0.05); cashmere fiber weight with 10% CP was 92, 82 and 95 g, and with 15% CP was 63, 115 and 99 g for 2.00, 2.35 and 2.70 Mcal ME/kg diets, respectively (SE = 10.2). However, the ranking of treatment means for initial cashmere fiber weight was similar to that at the end of the experiment, although differences at the beginning were non-significant and of lesser magnitude than at the end. In conclusion, further research with influences of concentrations of CP and ME in diets consumed ad libitum on cashmere fiber growth of growing US Spanish wether goats is required, and animal numbers and allocation to treatments deserve careful consideration in studies of cashmere fiber production. 相似文献

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of feeding schedule on dry matter (DM), gross energy (GE), crude protein (CP), and amino acid (AA) digestibility by growing pigs. Six growing castrates (initial body weight: 40.5 ± 2.25 kg) were equipped with a T-cannula in the distal ileum and allotted to a repeated 3 × 3 Latin square design with three animals and three periods in each square. A maize–soybean meal based diet (181 g CP/kg) was formulated and fed to the pigs in three different feeding schedules; i.e., one meal per day, two meals per day, or free access to feed. Pigs fed one or two meals per day were allotted a daily amount of feed equivalent to three times the maintenance energy requirement. Fecal and ileal samples were collected from all pigs in each period. The coefficients of ileal apparent digestibility (CIAD) for DM, GE, CP, and AA were calculated as were the coefficients of total tract apparent digestibility (CTTAD) of DM and GE. Results of the experiment showed that there were no differences in the CIAD for DM, GE, or for any of the AA among the three feeding schedules. In contrast, pigs given free access to the diet had lower (P<0.002) CTTAD for DM and GE compared with pigs fed a restricted amount of feed either once or twice daily. Therefore, the concentration of digestible energy in the diet was lower if calculated from pigs given free access to the diet compared with pigs fed the diet once or twice daily (14.38 MJ/kg versus 14.83 MJ/kg and 15.13 MJ/kg). It is concluded that the feeding schedule does not influence the CIAD for DM, GE, CP, or AA by pigs. Therefore, any of the three feeding schedules that were used in the current experiment may be used in experiments aimed at measuring CIAD in pigs. However, if the CTTAD of DM and GE are measured, it is recommended that pigs are given free access to feed. 相似文献

The present study aimed at determining the influence of condensed tannins present in the Brazilian legume species Mimosa hostilis, Mimosa caesalpinifolia and Bauhinia cheilantha on ruminal degradability, microbial colonization and enzymatic activity. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) was used to reduce the astringency and concentration of soluble condensed tannins. Four ruminally-cannulated Saanen goats (60 ± 8 kg BW) were fed, in two experimental periods, with a hay diet based on the studied legumes treated or non-treated with PEG. Voluntary intake, microbial colonization, DM, CP, NDF, and ruminal degradability of PEG treated and non-treated forage leaves, as well as pH, ammonia and 1,4 β-endoglucanase activity of the rumen content were evaluated. Astringency and soluble tannin concentration of the studied legumes were reduced by approximately 70% and 50%, respectively, with PEG treatment. Average DM intake was higher for the treated diet (16.76 g DM/kg BW/day against 13.06 g DM/kg BW/day). Percentile values for degradation parameters and for potential and effective degradabilities of DM, CP and NDF were also affected by the tannins, but at different intensities. Electron microscopic observations of ruminally-incubated legume leaves showed a more effective microbial colonization of PEG-treated leaves for all legume species. A decrease in pH and an increase in ammonia concentration and in endoglucanase activity in the ruminal content was also observed for PEG-treated diets at all sampling periods. Condensed tannins of the studied legume species have influenced the adhesion conditions, colonization and enzymatic activity of the microbial ecosystem, and consequently the ruminal degradation of the different dietary fractions. For this reason, the reduction in condensed tannin would be of great importance to improve the nutrition of ruminant feeding of these species. 相似文献
