Despite widespread empirical evidence for a general deterioration in the majority of traits with advancing age, it is unclear whether the progress of senescence is chronologically determined, or whether factors such as environmental conditions experienced over the lifespan are more important. We explored the relative importance of ‘chronological’ and ‘environmental’ measures of age to changes in parasite resistance across the lifespan of free-living Soay sheep. Our results show that individuals experience an increase in parasite burden, as indicated by gastrointestinal helminth faecal egg count (FEC) with chronological age. However, chronological age fails to fully explain changes in FEC because a measure of environmental age, cumulative environmental stress, predicts an additional increase in FEC once chronological age has been accounted for. Additionally, we show that in females age-specific changes are dependent upon the environmental conditions experienced across individuals'' life histories: increases in FEC with age were greatest among individuals that had experienced the highest degree of stress. Our results illustrate that chronological age alone may not always correspond to biological age, particularly in variable environments. In these circumstances, measures of age that capture the cumulative stresses experienced by an individual may be useful for understanding the process of senescence. 相似文献

Brindley P. J. and Dobson C. 1982. Nematospiroides dubius in mice selected for liability to infection: modification of parasite biology through host selection. International Journal for Parasitology12: 573–578. Mice selected as liable (L) and refractory (R) over ten generations voided significantly more and less Nematospiroides dubius eggs compared with randomly mated (Rd) mice after primary infections with 100 larvae. There was little difference between the number of parasite eggs voided g?1 faeces (epg) by individual mice on day 14 compared with day 15 after infection. However there was a significant diurnal variation in the egg values for individual mice but the mean differences observed between the R, Rd and L mice were maintained over a 24 h period. There was a strong correlation between both the total number and the number of female worms, surviving 21 days after infection, and the mean epg 14 and 15 days after infection. Female N. dubius produced more eggs in L mice and fewer eggs in R mice compared with worms in Rd mice. Similarly, worms grew longer in L mice and were shorter in R mice compared with parasites in Rd mice. 相似文献

Parasite success depends on both host profitability and the microenvironment provided by the host, which together define host-parasite compatibility and can differ between hosts. We experimentally disentangled the effects of host profitability and microenvironmental conditions provided by nest material on the reproduction of a nest-based ectoparasite when exploiting its main and an alternative avian host species. Parasite reproductive performance was similar on both hosts when breeding in nests of their own species, suggesting no difference in host-parasite compatibility between hosts. The apparent parasite specialization could therefore result from differences in host-parasite encounter processes. However, when hosts were successful, the main host produced more young in infested nests, whereas the alternative host produced less; furthermore, host reproductive performance was higher in nests of the main host species, suggesting that this nest material alleviates parasitism cost. Therefore, our results suggest different evolutionary responses to parasites of the main and alternative hosts, with either higher tolerance or higher resistance, modulated by nest material. 相似文献

Identifying the processes maintaining genetic variability in wild populations is a major concern in conservation and evolutionary biology. Parasite-mediated selection may strongly affect genetic variability in wild populations. The inbreeding depression theory predicts that directional selection imposed by parasites should act against the most inbred hosts, thus favouring genetic diversity in wild populations. We have tested this prediction by evaluating the strength and shape of the relationship between the load of a harmful fin-feeder ectoparasite ( Tracheliastes polycolpus ) and the genome-wide genetic diversity (i.e. heterozygosity measured at a set of 15 microsatellites) of its fish host, the rostrum dace ( Leuciscus leuciscus ). Contrary to expectation, we found a nonlinear relationship between host genetic diversity and ectoparasite load, with hosts that were either homozygous or heterozygous harbouring significantly fewer parasites than hosts with an intermediate level of heterozygosity. This relationship suggests that parasites could increase the variance of global heterozygosity in this host population through disruptive selection on genetic diversity. Moreover, when genetic diversity was measured at each locus separately, we found two very strong positive associations between host genetic diversity and the ectoparasite load. This latter result has three main implications: (i) genome-wide effect cannot alone explain the nonlinear relationship between global heterozygosity and ectoparasite load, (ii) negative non-additive allelic interactions (i.e. underdominance) may be a mechanism for resisting ectoparasite infection, and (iii) ectoparasites may favour homozygosity at some loci in this host population. 相似文献

There is substantial variability among populations of the same species in basic features such as abundance or niche breadth,
and it is unclear to what extent these are true species traits as opposed to the product of local environmental factors. In
parasites, abundance and niche breadth, i.e. host specificity, show repeatability among different populations of the same
species, but may also be influenced by external forces, depending on the parasite taxa studied. We tested whether the abundance
and host specificity of gamasid mites parasitic on small mammals from 26 different geographic regions of the Palaearctic,
are species-specific or instead determined by host identity and/or parameters of the biotic and abiotic environment. Values
of abundance and host specificity (measured as the number of host species used) were significantly more similar among populations
of the same mite species than among different mite species; despite also showing consistency within particular host species
or regions independently of mite species identity, both abundance and the number of host species used appear to be true mite
species traits. In contrast, the taxonomic distinctness of host species used by a mite showed little repeatability among populations
of the same mite species, and appears mostly determined by the local pool of available host species. Within given mite species,
all three variables (abundance, number of host species used, and their taxonomic distinctness) covaried to some extent with
one or more environmental factors (e.g., nature of the local host assemblage, temperature, precipitation) across geographical
regions, but there was no universal pattern among results from different mite species. These results are similar to those
obtained earlier on other taxa, e.g. fleas, and suggest that there are general laws acting on spatial patterns of parasite
abundance and host specificity. 相似文献

Natural selection on a vertical environmental gradient in Littorina saxatilis: analysis of fecundity
Two different morphs of the intertidal snail Littorina saxatilis are found in the wave-exposed coasts of Galicia, NW Spain. One lives on the upper shore and the other on the lower shore. They meet and produce phenotypically intermediate hybrids in a narrow transition band on the mid-shore. To understand the maintenance in sympatry of such an extreme intraspecific polymorphism, we studied the change in fecundity in each morph along two vertical transects of the coast. We did not find a progressive reduction in fecundity in any morph as it approached the midshore, and conclude therefore that the observed spatial segregation of the morphs cannot be explained by divergent natural selection acting through fecundity. We also measured 16 environmental variables, but none explained an important proportion of fecundity variability. 相似文献

Natural selection on the genetical component of variance in body condition in a wild bird population
Although there is substantial evidence that skeletal measures of body size are heritable in wild animal populations, it is frequently assumed that the nonskeletal component of body weight (or ‘condition’) is determined primarily by environmental factors, in particular nutritional state. We tested this assumption by quantifying the genetic and environmental components of variance in fledgling body condition index (=relative body weight) in a natural population of collared flycatchers (Ficedula albicollis), and compared the strength of natural selection on individual breeding values with that on phenotypic values. A mixed model analysis of the components of variance, based on an ‘animal model’ and using 18 years of data on 17 717 nestlings, revealed a significant additive genetic component of variance in body condition, which corresponded to a narrow sense heritability (h2) of 0.30 (SE=0.03). Nongenetic contributions to variation in body condition were large, but there was no evidence of dominance variance nor of contributions from early maternal or common environment effects (pre‐manipulation environment) in condition at fledging. Comparison of pre‐ and post‐selection samples revealed virtually identical h2 of body condition index, despite the fact that there was a significant decrease (35%) in the levels of additive genetic variance from fledging to breeding. The similar h2 in the two samples occurred because the environmental component of variance was also reduced by selection, suggesting that natural selection was acting on both genotypic and environmental variation. The effects of selection on genetic variance were confirmed by calculation of the selection differentials for both phenotypic values and best linear unbiased predictor (BLUP) estimates of breeding values: there was positive directional selection on condition index both at the phenotypic and the genotypic level. The significant h2 of body condition index is consistent with data from human and rodent populations showing significant additive genetic variance in relative body mass and adiposity, but contrasts with the common assumption in ecology that body condition reflects an individual’s nongenetic nutritional state. Furthermore, the substantial reduction in the additive genetic component of variance in body condition index suggests that selection on environmental deviations cannot alone explain the maintenance of additive genetic variation in heritable traits, but that other mechanisms are needed to explain the moderate to high heritabilities of traits under consistent and strong directional selection. 相似文献

Abstract Testosterone underlies the expression of most secondary sexual traits, playing a key role in sexual selection. However, high levels might be associated with physiological costs, such as immunosuppression. Immunostimulant carotenoids underpin the expression of many red‐yellow ornaments, but are regulated by testosterone and constrained by parasites. We manipulated testosterone and nematode burdens in red grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus) in two populations to tease apart their effects on carotenoid levels, ornament size and colouration in three time‐step periods. We found no evidence for interactive effects of testosterone and parasites on ornament size and colouration. We showed that ornament colouration was testosterone‐driven. However, parasites decreased comb size with a time delay and testosterone increased carotenoid levels in one of the populations. This suggests that environmental context plays a key role in determining how individuals resolve the trade‐off between allocating carotenoids for ornamental coloration or for self‐maintenance needs. Our study advocates that adequately testing the mechanisms behind the production or maintenance of secondary sexual characters has to take into account the dynamics of sexual trait expression and their environmental context. 相似文献

In the Yucatán Peninsula, spider monkeys Ateles geoffroyi yucatanensis are generally found in two contrasting conditions: large tracts of conserved forest or small fragments surrounded by human populations. In the present study, we analyzed fecal cortisol levels of spider monkeys to investigate whether environmental conditions have an influence on stress; specifically, we compared fecal cortisol across individuals living in conserved forests, fragmented forests and captive conditions (zoos and pets). Radioimmunoanalysis of fecal samples from 121 individuals indicated significant differences in mean cortisol for A. g. yucatanensis based on habitat type, with the lowest levels found in the conserved forest condition. The higher cortisol levels in both fragmented forest populations and in captive individuals may be the result of metabolic and behavioral stress. The mean male fecal cortisol concentration was significantly higher than that of females, and the fecal cortisol concentration was higher in the dry season compared with the wet season in a conserved habitat. Therefore, we emphasize the importance of considering sex and seasonality when monitoring fecal cortisol concentrations of spider monkeys, and more generally of frugivores, as they face a seasonal variation in food availability. Finally, our results suggest that forest fragmentation may create long-term stressors for spider monkeys, affecting the viability of populations living under such conditions. 相似文献

Interactive effects of environmental stress and inbreeding on reproductive traits in a wild bird population 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
1. Conservation biologists are concerned about the interactive effects of environmental stress and inbreeding because such interactions could affect the dynamics and extinction risk of small and isolated populations, but few studies have tested for these interactions in nature. 2. We used data from the long-term population study of song sparrows Melospiza melodia on Mandarte Island to examine the joint effects of inbreeding and environmental stress on four fitness traits that are known to be affected by the inbreeding level of adult birds: hatching success, laying date, male mating success and fledgling survival. 3. We found that inbreeding depression interacted with environmental stress to reduce hatching success in the nests of inbred females during periods of rain. 4. For laying date, we found equivocal support for an interaction between parental inbreeding and environmental stress. In this case, however, inbred females experienced less inbreeding depression in more stressful, cooler years. 5. For two other traits, we found no evidence that the strength of inbreeding depression varied with environmental stress. First, mated males fathered fewer nests per season if inbred or if the ratio of males to females in the population was high, but inbreeding depression did not depend on sex ratio. Second, fledglings survived poorly during rainy periods and if their father was inbred, but the effects of paternal inbreeding and rain did not interact. 6. Thus, even for a single species, interactions between the inbreeding level and environmental stress may not occur in all traits affected by inbreeding depression, and interactions that do occur will not always act synergistically to further decrease fitness. 相似文献

Extraction of DNA from non-invasive samples (feces) has been used increasingly in genetic research on wildlife. For effective and reliable genetic analyses, knowledge about which samples should be selected in the field is essential. For this reason, we examined the process of DNA degradation in feces of deer. We collected fresh fecal pellets from three wild deer living in a warm temperate forest. We then assessed the effects of time (3, 5, and 10 days) under three environmental conditions (on the forest floor, on exposed ground, and inside the laboratory) on the rates of correct genotyping (CG), amplification failure (NA), genotyping error among positive amplification (ER), false alleles (FA), and allelic dropout (AD) of 15 microsatellite loci. The rate of CG significantly decreased, and those of NA and FA increased with increasing lapse of time. Rates of CG tended to be highest and those of NA, ER, FA, and AD to be lowest in feces kept inside, followed by those on the forest floor. Suitability of samples for DNA extraction was lowest in fecal pellets left on exposed ground, and we suspect that rain may hasten DNA degradation. NA rate could serve as a reliable indicator of the quality of fecal pellets because it was significantly positively correlated with ER rate. For efficient genetic analyses using deer feces in warm temperate zones, we recommend collecting fecal pellets within 3 days of defecation, during periods without rainfall and from under the cover of trees. 相似文献

Using lines artificially selected on egg size and being subjected to a restricted and an unrestricted feeding treatment, we examined the relationships between egg size, egg number, egg composition, and reproductive investment in the butterfly Bicyclus anynana . Despite a successful manipulation of egg size, correlated responses to selection in larval time, pupal mass, pupal time, longevity, fecundity, or the amount of energy allocated to reproduction were virtually absent. Thus, there was no indication for an evolutionary link between offspring size and reproductive investment. Egg composition, in contrast, was affected by selection, with larger eggs containing relatively more lipid and water, but less protein and energy compared to smaller eggs. Hence, females producing large eggs did not have to sacrifice fecundity due to adjustments in egg composition. Food limitation per se caused only minor changes in egg composition, and there was no general reduction in egg provisioning with female age. The latter was restricted to food-limited females, whereas egg quality remained remarkably similar throughout the females' life in control groups. We conclude that neglecting changes in biochemical egg composition, depending on genetic background, food availability, and female age, may introduce substantial error when estimating reproductive effort, and may ultimately lead to invalid conclusions. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 91 , 403–418. 相似文献

Summary Allozymic variation in proteins encoded by 47 loci was analyzed electrophoretically in 1983/4 and 1984/5 in 356 individual plants of wild emmer wheat, Triticum dicoccoides, from a microsite at Tabigha, north of the Sea of Galilee, Israel. Each year the test involved two 100-meter transects, each equally subdivided into basalt and terra rossa soil types, and comparisons were based on 16 common polymorphic loci. Significant genetic differentiation, genetic phase disequilibria, and genome organization according to soil type were found over very short distances. Our results suggest that allozyme polymorphisms in wild emmer wheat are partly adaptive, and that they differentiate at both single and multilocus structures primarily from environmental stress of such ecological factors as soil type, topography, and temporal changes, probably through aridity stress. 相似文献

Genetic diversity may decrease from the centre to the margin of a species distribution range due to neutral stochastic processes. Selection may also alter genetic diversity in non-neutral markers, such as genes associated with the immune system. Both neutral processes and selection on the immune system are thus expected to affect the spatial distribution of such markers, but the relative strength of each has been scarcely studied. Here, we compared the diversity of a neutral marker (mitochondrial cytochrome b) and a selected marker (DRB gene from the MHC-II), in eastern-North American populations of white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus), a species known for its role of main reservoir of the Lyme disease. We observed distinct phylogeographic patterns with these two markers, which may be the result of selection pressure acting upon the DRB gene. As predicted by the central marginal hypothesis, we observed a loss of neutral genetic diversity toward the margin of the species distribution. A decrease in diversity was also observed for the DRB gene, likely due to genetic drift and positive selection operated by helminth parasites. Such a loss in genetic diversity at the range margin may slow down the ongoing expansion of P. leucopus, by counterbalancing the effect of global warming on the mouse survival at higher latitude. 相似文献

Temporal patterns of natural and sexual selection on male badge size and body traits were studied in a population of house sparrows, Passer domesticus. Badge size was a heritable trait as revealed by a significant father-son regression. Survival during autumn dispersal and winter was not related to badge size or body traits in yearling male house sparrows. Badges that signal dominance status were affected positively by directional selection for mating. Adult male house sparrows suffered an opposing selection pressure on badge size during autumn. Contrary to males, female house sparrows did not experience significant directional or stabilizing selection on any body trait. Directional sexual selection on male badge size due to female choice moves male sparrows away from their survival optimum. Opposing directional natural selection on badge size due to autumn mortality caused by predation maintains a stable badge size. 相似文献

Little is known about the importance of trade-offs between ageing and other life history traits, or the effects of ageing on sexual selection, particularly in wild populations suffering high extrinsic mortality rates. Life history theory suggests that trade-offs between reproduction and somatic maintenance may constrain individuals with higher initial reproductive rates to deteriorate more rapidly, resulting in reduced sexual selection strength. However, this trade-off may be masked by increased condition dependence of reproductive effort in older individuals. We tested for this trade-off in males in a wild population of antler flies (Protopiophila litigata). High mating rate was associated with reduced longevity, as a result of increased short-term mortality risk or accelerated ageing in traits affecting viability. In contrast, large body size was associated with accelerated ageing in traits affecting mating success, resulting in reduced sexual selection for large body size. Thus, ageing can affect sexual selection and evolution in wild populations. 相似文献

Artificial selection was carried out on a deviant character of remnants of the anal papillae in pupae of Drosophila melanogaster, i. e. stretched (S) instead of the normal retracted (R) papillae. A chromosomal interchange between the R- and S-selection lines revealed the polygenic determination of the S-character. A comparison of lines with a different number of chromosomes of the S-line shows the importance of properties of the anal papillae for salt adaptation. By a comparison of populations obtained by artificial selection for anal papillae and by natural selection for salt adaptation we could analyse the significance of the deviant character under natural selection on media with increasing percentages of salt. Our results shows that taking into account only one character in natural selection is often a simplification. However, applying artificial selection on components of the phenotype contributing to the adaptation make an important contribution to the analysis of adaptive processes. 相似文献

A meta-analysis of the literature shows that in adult male songbirds, brain mass, telencephalon volume and n. rotundus (a thalamic visual nucleus) volume increase from the nonbreeding season (low testosterone) to the breeding season (higher testosterone). These effects can at least partially be mimicked by photoperiod manipulations in captivity. In contrast, an artificial testosterone (T) titer increase by chronic implants yields the opposite results: telencephalon, n. rotundus, and n. pretectalis volumes are lower in T-treated animals than in controls. These results suggest that artificial testosterone manipulations do not necessarily mimic the effects of natural variations in hormone levels and that results from experiments using T implants to mimic natural hormonal effects should be interpreted with caution. 相似文献

A mathematical model for the study of the effects of blood flow, metabolic heat production, various environmental conditions and the presence of a curved boundary on the temperature distribution (TD) in a two dimensional model of human skin and subcutaneous tissues (SST) is presented. Based on physiological properties, the interfaces between epidermis-dermis (IED) and dermis-subcutaneous tissues (IDS) have been considered to be irregular and the regions of these layers have been divided into 109 triangular elements of various sizes which are connected with each other by 70 nodes. The results computed from this thermobiological mathematical model, using Galerkin's finite element technique, have been exhibited graphically. The effects of various environmental conditions, blood flow and metabolic heat production are found to be nonuniform on TD at the nodes situated at the same depth in SST. This nonuniformity in TD almost disappears at the nodes situated in dermis nearest to IDS except for the two of the six combinations, considered in the present study, in which highest values of blood flow and metabolic heat production have been considered. The rate of fall of temperature with respect to thickness (towards the skin surface) is higher at the straight boundary (SB) than at the curved boundary (CB). The temperature increases with respect to width (from SB to CB) in epidermis and dermis but decreases in subcutaneous tissues. This increase or decrease of temperature is more pronounced at the nodes situated near to, or at CB. The trend of these temperature profiles in SST reflects the dependence of TD not only on the environmental conditions and biophysical variables but also on the geometry of SST. 相似文献

Body size varies considerably among species and among populations within species, exhibiting many repeatable patterns. However, which sources of selection generate geographic patterns, and which components of fitness mediate evolution of body size, are not well understood. For many animals, resource quality and intraspecific competition may mediate selection on body size producing large-scale geographic patterns. In two sequential experiments, we examine how variation in larval competition and resource quality (seed size) affects the fitness consequences of variation in body size in a scramble-competing seed-feeding beetle, Stator limbatus. Specifically, we compared fitness components among three natural populations of S. limbatus that vary in body size, and then among three lineages of beetles derived from a single base population artificially selected to vary in size, all reared on three sizes of seeds at variable larval density. The effects of larval competition and seed size on larval survival and development time were similar for larger versus smaller beetles. However, larger-bodied beetles suffered a greater reduction in adult body mass with decreasing seed size and increasing larval density; the relative advantage of being large decreased with decreasing seed size and increasing larval density. There were highly significant interactions between the effects of seed size and larval density on body size, and a significant three-way interaction (population-by-density-by-seed size), indicating that environmental effects on the fitness consequences of being large are nonadditive. Our study demonstrates how multiple ecological variables (resource availability and resource competition) interact to affect organismal fitness components, and that such interactions can mediate natural selection on body size. Studying individual factors influencing selection on body size may lead to misleading results given the potential for nonlinear interactions among selective agents. 相似文献
