 The effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on micropropagated banana plantlets was evaluated during the acclimatization period. Plants were inoculated with Acaulospora scrobiculata, Glomus clarum or Glomus etunicatum. After cultivation in a greenhouse for 3 months, height, leaf area, fresh weight and dry matter of root and shoots, level of AMF colonization, nutrient level, photosynthesis and transpiration rate, water potential and stomatal conductance were measured. The number of AMF spores produced in each treatment was also determined. Plantlets inoculated with AMF had greater height, leaf area and fresh weight of shoots and roots, as well as higher rates of photosynthesis and transpiration than controls.  This study assesses body composition changes and their time course during the initial days of acclimatization to high altitude (HA). Comparisons were made between gradual and acute induction to HA using 60 male lowlander volunteers (24–28 years of age) divided into two equal groups for inducting them to HA. Thirty subjects were air-lifted from sea level (SL) to 3500 m HA in 1 h. These subjects were air inductees (AI). The other 30 subjects were transported in 4 days by road to the same location at 3500 m. These were road inductees (RI). After remaining for 15 days at 3500 m both groups were inducted to 4200 m by road. All the subjects could not reach the various altitudes at the same time due to logistical problems. Ultimately, data for each altitude (SL, 3500 m and 4200 m) were available for only 26 RI subjects and 10 AI subjects. Skinfold thickness (SKF) measurements for the subscapular, thigh, triceps, biceps, juxtanipple, umbilicus, suprailiac and calf regions were taken in order to calculate fat percentages. Measurements were taken at SL and on days 1 and 9 at both 3500 m and 4200 m. On day 1 at 3500 m, RI showed a significant fall in body weight (BW) with respect to SL but AI maintained it. On subsequent days at HA both groups showed a significant fall in BW and lean body mass but not in percentage fat. SKF in the biceps and triceps regions decreased significantly but in the umbilicus and suprailiac regions it significantly increased at HA in both groups. Body composition, along with other parameters, is discussed determining the acclimatization schedule for sojourners at HA. Possibly, translocation of body fat takes place from the periphery to deep body fat depots in the core/main trunk due to the cold at HA.  Four ectomycorrhizal fungi (Amanita muscaria, Laccaria laccata, Piloderma croceum and Pisolithus tinctorius) were used to produce mycorrhiza on seedlings and micropropagated plants of Castanea sativa in vitro. Pisolithus tinctorius was most effective in colonizing roots of both micropropagated plants and seedlings. A. muscaria and L. laccata only colonized a few feeder roots of some plants and Piloderma croceum did not form mycorrhizas.  Non-photochemical quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence (NPQ) and quantum yield of photosystem II (PSII) were studied with intact mesophyll chloroplasts of maize (Zea mays L.) during the initial minutes of illumination using the pulse-modulated chlorophyll fluorescence technique. Non-photochemical quenching was rapidly reversible in the dark at any point during illumination, which is indicative of energy-dependent dissipation of energy (mediated via thylakoid ΔpH changes and ascorbate-dependent synthesis of zeaxanthin). In chloroplasts suspensions including 15 mM ascorbate in the medium, with addition of oxaloacetate and pyruvate, the PSII yield, rate of reduction of oxaloacetate and phosphorylation of pyruvate reached a maximum after approximately 2 min of illumination. Under these conditions, which promote phosphorylation and a decreased ΔpH across the thylakoid membrane, NPQ rose to a maximum after 2–3 min of illumination, dropped to a minimum after about 6 min, and then increased to a steady-state level. A rather similar pattern was observed when leaves were illuminated following a 30-min dark period. Providing chloroplasts with higher levels of ascorbate (60 mM), prevented the transient drop in NPQ. Anaerobic conditions or addition of potassium cyanide caused a decrease in PSII yield, providing evidence for operation of the ascorbate-dependent Mehler-peroxidase reaction. These conditions also strongly suppressed the transient drop in NPQ. Dithiothreitol, an inhibitor of violaxanthin de-epoxidase, caused a large drop in NPQ even in the presence of high levels of ascorbate. The results suggest that the decline of NPQ occurs in response to an increase in lumen pH after initiation of phosphorylation, that this decline can be suppressed by conditions where ascorbate is not limiting for violaxanthin de-epoxidase, and that the increase of NPQ after such a decline is the result of development of energy dissipation in PSII reaction centers. Tail autotomy is a defense against predators used by many lizard species but is associated with various costs, most of which have been measured only in the laboratory. We conducted a field experiment in which we induced tail autotomy to approximately half (58%) of a marked sample (n=326) of Uta stansburiana from western Texas in the fall, and left the other half with intact tails. The following spring we determined survival, measured growth, and brought females to the laboratory to allow them to oviposit their eggs, which we incubated until hatching. Based on past studies, we anticipated inferior survival, growth, and reproduction following tail autotomy. We also predicted that females with tail loss would be energetically compromised and would alter the sex ratio of their offspring toward more daughters (as predicted by the Trivers-Willard hypothesis). Tailless lizards experienced significantly reduced survivorship, but those that survived grew the same as their tailed counterparts. Tailed and tailless females produced clutches equivalent in number of eggs and total mass. Whereas tailed females showed a significant positive relationship between average egg mass and snout-vent length, tailless females did not. Contrary to our expectations, tailless females produced heavier hatchlings than tailed ones, and sex ratios of hatchlings were equivalent for tailed and tailless females. In this population, tail loss in subadults leads to an increased risk of death, but apparently does not impose an energetic handicap such that later growth and reproduction suffer. We suggest that because tailless females are faced with decreased reproductive value, they respond by growing as much and laying as many eggs of the same mass as tailed females, despite the fact that they are also regenerating the tail. In addition, they somehow produce larger hatchlings than tailed females. Nevertheless, tailless females probably end up with lower overall lifetime fitness than tailed females, and tail loss thus induces the conditional reproductive strategy ”make the best of a bad situation”. Because tailless females produce larger, not smaller, hatchlings, they do not produce more daughters as predicted; i.e., we found no evidence for the Trivers-Willard effect following tail autotomy.  The impact of ozone fumigation on chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters and chlorophyll content of birch trees grown at high and low fertilization were studied for 6-, 8-, and 12-week old leaves. Fluorescence parameters were measured with a portable fluorometer with its fibre optics tightly inserted in a gas exchange cuvette at light intensities from 0 to 220 μmol photons m−2 s−1. Ozone caused significant changes of primary photosynthetic reactions: a decrease of the quantum yield of photosystem II and an increase of non-photochemical quenching. In all leaves a biphasic light response of non-photochemical quenching was observed. Ozone fumigation shifted the onset of the second phase from a PFD of about 60 μmol m−2 s−1 to about 30 μmol m−2 s−1. While the fertilizer concentration had no influence on this character, high fertilization supply of plants partially reduced O3-induced damage. The light responses of Ft, Fm′ and NPQ observed in birch leaves grown in O3-free air indicate the existence of at least two different processes governing energy conversion of the photosynthetic apparatus at PS II in the range of PFD 0–200 μmol photons m−2 s−1. The first phase was attributed to a rather slowly relaxing type of non-photochemical quenching, which, at least at low PFD, is thought to be related to a state 1–2 transition. The further changes of the fluorescence parameters studied at higher PFD might be explained by an increase of energy-dependent quenching, connected with the energization of the thylakoid membrane and zeaxanthin synthesis. A major effect of ozone treatment was a lowering of PS II quantum yield. Two-year-old rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) plants were subjected to severe stress by exposure to prolonged drought during a Mediterranean summer. Severely stressed plants recovered completely after the autumn rainfalls although the relative water content remained below 35% for 3 months and the chlorophyll content of leaves was reduced by up to 85% during the drought. In severe stress: (i) α-tocopherol increased 9-fold per g dry weight and 20-fold per unit of chlorophyll; (ii) lutein and β-carotene contents decreased on a dry-weight basis, but an 80% increase in lutein and constant levels of β-carotene were observed on a chlorophyll basis; (iii) there were transient and sustained increases in the de-epoxidation state of the xanthophyll cycle; and (iv) the highly oxidised abietane diterpene isorosmanol increased 8-fold as a result of the oxidation of carnosic acid. With the autumn rainfalls, water status, α-tocopherol and violaxanthin recovered first and the levels of photosynthetic pigments and abietane diterpenes increased later. The photoprotection conferred by the xanthophyll cycle and the antioxidant function of tocopherols, lutein and diterpenes may help to avoid irreversible damage in severe drought, making possible the recovery of functional membranes after the autumn rainfalls. Besides, chlorophyll loss reduces the amount of photons absorbed by leaves, which enhances the photoprotective and antioxidant capacity of leaves per amount of photons absorbed, since the ratios of xanthophylls, α-tocopherol and abietane diterpenes to chlorophyll increase.  Root colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) may affect protein and lipid composition of plants by altering P nutrition or by eliciting other metabolic responses in the host plant. This study was conducted to determine the effects of an AMF and soil P on seed protein and lipid contents and yield of two genotypes of durum wheat (Triticum durum L.). Plants were grown in a greenhouse using soil: sand mixes with different levels of P, and with or without the AMF Glomus mosseae [(Nicol. and Gerd.) Gerd. and Trappe]. Percentage AMF root colonization decreased as P added to soil increased. The wheat genotype CR057 had higher AMF root colonization but lower seed P and protein concentrations than CR006. Without added soil P, protein concentration was significantly lower and lipid concentration and seed dry weight higher in arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) than in nonAM plants. Seed lipid and protein contents were highly correlated with P content of plants. In nonAM plants, seed lipid and protein contents were low with no added soil P and did not differ with added soil P. Seed protein/lipid (Pro/L) concentration ratios of AM plants were higher than those of nonAM plants only when no P was added to the soil. The data indicate different patterns of seed P accumulation and different relationships between seed P and protein and lipid in AM and nonAM plants. The amylose/amylopectin ratio and the pasting properties of wheat starch are important in producing marketable flour products, especially Japanese noodles. To determine if null mutations at the three Wx loci confer differences in starch-pasting viscosity, we analyzed the variation associated with the null mutations in three separate sets of recombinant substitution lines of chromosomes 7A, 4A and 7D produced from crosses between Chinese Spring and three single-chromosome substitution lines carrying the null Wx alleles. Differential effects of null alleles at the three Wx loci on starch-pasting properties were revealed. With respect to chromosome 4A, the effect of the Wx-B1b allele, giving a higher peak and breakdown viscosity, was unambiguous. In addition, a QTL of minor effect was identified near the centromere on the short arm. The presence or absence of the Wx-A1 protein gave some variation in peak and breakdown viscosity, but the effects of Wx-Alb were much smaller than those of the Wx-Blb allele. Associated effects of the Wx-D1 locus were detected for the breakdown viscosity as the null Wx-D1b allele produced a higher viscosity than the wild-type Wx-D1a. While negative correlations between amylose content and breakdown viscosity were common in the three populations, the null mutations at the Wx loci produced some variation independent of amylose content.  The assembly, organization and function of the photosynthetic apparatus was investigated in the wild type and a chlorophyll (Chl) b-less mutant of the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, generated via DNA insertional mutagenesis. Comparative analyses were undertaken with cells grown photoheterotrophically (acetate), photomixotrophically (acetate and HCO 3) or photoautotrophically (HCO 3). It is shown that lack of Chl b diminished the photosystem-II (PSII) functional Chl antenna size from 320 Chl (a and b) to about 95 Chl a molecules. However, the functional Chl antenna size of PSI remained fairly constant at about 290 Chl molecules, independent of the presence of Chl b. Western blot and kinetic analyses suggested the presence of inner subunits of the Chl a-b light-harvesting complex of PSII (LHCII) and the entire complement of the Chl a-b light-harvesting complex of PSI (LHCI) in the mutant. It is concluded that Chl a can replace Chl b in the inner subunits of the LHCII and in the entire complement of the LHCI. Growth of cells on acetate as the sole carbon source imposes limitations in the photon-use efficiency and capacity of photosynthesis. These are manifested as a lower quantum yield and lower light-saturated rate of photosynthesis, and as lower variable to maximal (Fv/Fmax) chlorophyll fluorescence yield ratios. This adverse effect probably originates because acetate shifts the oxidation-reduction state of the plastoquinone pool, and also because it causes a decrease in the amount and/or activity of Rubisco in the chloroplast. Such limitations are fully alleviated upon inclusion of an inorganic carbon source (e.g. bicarbonate) in the cell growth medium. Further, the work provides evidence to show that transformation of green algae can be used as a tool by which to generate mutants exhibiting a permanently truncated Chl antenna size and a higher (per Chl) photosynthetic productivity of the cells.  The effects of inbreeding on growth, survival and variance in a 12-year-old radiata pine trial were studied in five populations each inbred to one of five different levels: outcross (F=0), half-sib (F=0.125), full-sib (F=0.25), selfing (S1, F=0.5), and two-generations of selfing (S2, F=0.75). These five populations were derived from a founder population of eight clones. Inbreeding reduced diameter, growth, and survival but increased the variance for diameter. Inbreeding depression at F=0.125, 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75 was 5%, 6%, 15%, and 19% respectively for DBH; −3%, 1%, 7%, and 11% respectively, for survival. The standard deviation for diameter increased by 10%, 10%, 30%, and 25% respectively for F=0.125, 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75 and, similarly, the coefficient of variation increased by 17%, 16%, 53%, and 55% respectively. There were significant differences among the eight founder clones in their response to inbreeding. The best clone in the trial showed no inbreeding depression. Overall, inbreeding depression was found to be linearly related to the inbreeding coefficient F with no significant quadratic effects for any trait at any population level. However, two individual clones had a quadratic relationship with F for DBH and one clone had a similar relationship for survival. A significant correlation (r=0.96) between S2 and the breeding values of founder clones was observed while the correlation (r=0.58) between S1 and breeding values was insignificant. The low inbreeding depression in radiata pine relative to other conifers may indicate that historical purging of detrimental alleles through small geographic populations, a higher degree of population subdivision, and the relative high fecundity of inbred progenies has rendered radiata pine an ideal species to use inbreeding as a breeding tool. The population density and demography of five species of arctic Collembola were studied in a naturally patchy habitat, consisting of Carex ursinae tussocks with varying degrees of isolation. Focal predictor variables were those describing the spatial configuration of tussocks, including tussock size and isolation and the amount of habitat (cover) at a 1-m2 scale surrounding each tussock population. The Collembola populations were heavily influenced by environmental stochasticity in the form of winter mortality and summer drought, and the influence of patchiness on population characteristics was evaluated in this context. The five species showed very different responses to the structuring effect of the habitat, depending on life history characteristics, mobility and habitat requirements. Population density was highly variable in both time and space. Spring densities indicated larger winter mortality compared to observations from a previous study, and the snow- and ice-free season from June to August only resulted in population growth for Folsomia sexoculata. In the other species, adult mortality must have been high as there was no net population growth despite observed reproduction. The exception was Hypogastrura viatica, whose population decline was more likely to have been the result of migration out of the study area. Cover was the most important variable explaining density. No pure area or isolation effects at the tussock level were detected, even in areas with very low habitat cover. Drought was probably an important mortality factor, as July was particularly warm and dry. Due to qualitative differences in the tussocks and the matrix substrate, desiccation risk would be higher during dispersal between tussocks. We suggest that increased dispersal mortality gave the observed pattern of increased density in relation to cover, both in general and in F. quadrioculata, an opportunistic species otherwise known for rapid population growth. Onychiurus groenlandicus, which had a similar density response to cover, may also be influenced by a rescue effect sustaining densities in areas with high cover. The cover effect can be viewed as a large-scale factor which encompasses the general spatial neighbourhood of each tussock, where inter-population processes are important, as opposed to internal patch dynamics. Phosphite is a cost-effective fungicide used to control the pathogen Phytophthora cinnamomi which is damaging the diverse flora of the southwest of Western Australia. Three annual species of the southwest jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) forest of Western Australia (Pterocheata paniculata, Podotheca gnaphalioides and Hyalosperma cotula), were studied to determine the effect of the fungicide phosphite on the species’ reproduction. Phosphite at concentrations of 2.5, 5 and 10 g L–1 reduced pollen fertility of Pt. paniculata when plants were sprayed at the vegetative stage. Pollen fertility of all three species was reduced when plants were sprayed at anthesis with 10 g L–1 phosphite. Seed germination was reduced by phosphite in Pt. paniculata and H. cotula when plants were sprayed in the vegetative stage. Phosphite when sprayed at anthesis at a concentration of 5 g L–1 reduced seed germination of H. cotula. Phosphite at concentrations of 5 and 10 g L–1 killed a proportion of plants from all three species and up to 90% of Po. gnaphalioides plants. The spatial arrangement of resources in patchy habitats influences the distribution of individuals and their ability to acquire resources. We used Chironomus riparius, a ubiquitous aquatic insect that uses leaf particles as an important resource, to ask how the dispersion of resource patches influences the distribution and resource acquisition of mobile individuals in patchy landscapes. Two experiments were conducted in replicated laboratory landscapes (38×38 cm) created by arranging sand and leaf patches in a 5×5 grid so that the leaf patches were either aggregated or uniformly dispersed in the grid. One-day-old C. riparius larvae were introduced into the landscapes in one of three densities (low, medium, high). In experiment 1, we sampled larvae and pupae by coring each patch in each landscape 3, 6, 12, or 24 days after adding larvae. In experiment 2, emerging adults were collected daily for 42 days from each patch in each landscape. In aggregated landscapes, individuals were aggregated in one patch type or the other during a particular developmental stage, but the ”preferred” type changed depending on developmental stage and initial density. Adult emergence was lower by about 30% in all aggregated landscapes. In dispersed landscapes, individuals used both types of patch throughout their life cycles at all initial densities. Thus, patch arrangement influences the distribution of mobile individuals in landscapes, and it influences resource acquisition even when average resource abundance is identical among landscapes. Regardless of patch arrangement, high initial density caused accumulation of early instars in edge patches, 75% mortality of early instars, a 25% increase in development time, and a 60% reduction in adult emergence. Because mortality was extremely high among early-instar larvae in high-density treatments, we do not have direct evidence that the mechanism by which patch arrangement operates is density dependent. However, the results of our experiments strongly suggest that dispersion of resource patches across a landscape reduces local densities by making non-resource patches available for use, thereby reducing intraspecific competition. Aquatic macrophytes are important in stabilising moderately eutrophic, shallow freshwater lakes in the clear-water state. The failure of macrophyte recovery in lakes with very soft, highly organic sediments that have been restored to clear water by biomanipulation (e.g. in the Norfolk Broads, UK) has suggested that the physical stability of the sediment may limit plant establishment. Hydraulic forces from water currents may be sufficient to break or remove plants. Our aim was to develop a simple model that could predict these forces from plant biomass, current velocity and plant form. We used an experimental flume to measure the hydraulic forces acting on shoots of 18 species of aquatic macrophyte of varying size and morphology. The hydraulic drag on the shoots was regressed on a theoretically derived predictor (shoot biomass × current velocity1.5). Such linear regressions proved to be highly significant for most species. The slopes of these lines represent species-specific, hydraulic roughness factors that are analogous to classical drag coefficients. Shoot architecture parameters describing leaf and shoot shape had significant effects on the hydraulic roughness factor. Leaf width and shoot stiffness individually did not have a significant influence, but in combination with shoot shape they were significant. This hydraulic model was validated for a subset of species using measurements from an independent set of shoots. When measured and predicted hydraulic forces were compared, the fit was generally very good, except for two species with morphological variations. This simple model, together with the plant-specific factors, provides a basis for predicting the hydraulic forces acting on the root systems of macrophytes under field conditions. Elevated CO2 can affect plant fitness not only through its effects on seed production but also by altering the quality of seeds and therefore germination and seedling performance. We collected seeds from mother plants of Bromus erectus grown in field plots at ambient and elevated CO2 (m-CO2, maternal CO2) and germinated them in the greenhouse in a reciprocal design under ambient and elevated CO2 (o-CO2, offspring CO2). This design allowed us to examine both the direct effects of elevated CO2 on germination and seedling growth and the indirect (maternal) effects via altered seed quality. Elevated m-CO2 significantly increased seed mass and increased the C:N ratio of seeds from field-grown plants. Percentage and rate of germination were not affected by the m-CO2 or o-CO2 treatments. Similarly, elevated m-CO2 had no significant effect on seedling size as estimated by the total leaf length. When differences in seed mass were adjusted by using seed mass as a covariate in ANOVA, a negative effect of m-CO2 on seedling size appeared which increased with increasing seed mass (significant covariate×m-CO2 interaction). This may indicate that the advantage of increased seed mass at elevated m-CO2 was offset by the reduced concentration of nitrogen (and possibly other nutrients) in these seeds. In contrast to m-CO2, elevated o-CO2 greatly increased seedling size, and this stimulatory effect of elevated o-CO2 was found to increase with increasing seed mass (significant covariate×o-CO2 interaction). Taken together, these results suggest that in B. erectus transgenerational effects of elevated CO2 are relatively small. However, other factors (genetic and environmental) that contribute to variation in seed provisioning can critically influence the responsiveness of seedlings to elevated CO2.  The effects of, and interactions between, insect root feeders, vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and soil fertility on the establishment, growth and reproduction of Vicia sativa and V. hirsuta (Fabaceae) were investigated in an early-successional grassland community. Seeds of both species were sown into plots where soil insecticide (Dursban 5G), soil fungicide (Rovral) and soil fertiliser (NPK) were applied in a factorial randomised block design. Fertiliser addition reduced growth, longevity and reproduction of both Vicia species, due to the commonly recorded increase in the competitive advantage of the non-nitrogen-fixing species when nitrogen is added to the plant community. However, in plots where fertiliser was not applied, a reduction in root feeders and mycorrhizal infection led to an increase in seedling establishment and fruit production of V. sativa, and to an increase in flower production for both Vicia species. The interaction between all three soil treatments explained much of the variation in growth and longevity of V. sativa. Plants grew larger and survived longer in plots where natural levels of mycorrhizal infection and root feeders were low compared with plots where all the treatments were applied. This suggests that, although soil nutrient availability was a strong determinant of the performance of these two leguminous species, at natural levels of soil fertility biotic factors acting in the soil, such as mycorrhizal fungi and soil-dwelling insects, were important in shaping the competitive interactions between the two Vicia species and the plant community. Our results indicate that non-additive interactions between ecological factors in the soil environment may strongly affect plant performance.  Macroboring organisms are recognised as key agents of reef framework modification and destruction, and while recent studies in the Pacific have improved understanding of spatial variations in macroboring community structure, and rates of macroboring within individual reefs, comparable studies from the Caribbean are largely lacking. This study assesses the distribution of macroboring species and the degree of framework infestation across the reefs at Discovery Bay, north Jamaica. Although individual species of borers exhibit variable distributions across the reef, relative abundances of the main groups of macroborers (sponges, bivalves, worms) illustrate clear distributional trends. Sponges are dominant at fore-reef sites, while sipunculan and polychaete worms are only of importance at back-reef/lagoon and shallow fore-reef sites. Bivalves are locally important within back-reef and lagoon patch reef framework. Average percentages of internal bioerosion (macroboring) vary between sites, but are highest at back-reef and deep fore-reef sites. No systematic pattern of variation occurs within back-reef/lagoon samples, but a significant trend of increased macroboring is recognised with increased water depth on the fore-reef. In addition, significant differences in terms of the susceptibility of individual coral species are recognised. These factors are likely to result in biasing of the fossil record, with variable styles of preservation evident both between sites (i.e. with depth/environment) and within sites (i.e. between coral species).  Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi), white spruce (Picea glauca), black spruce (Picea mariana), red spruce (Picea rubens), jack pine (Pinus banksiana), mugo pine (Pinus mugo), red pine (Pinus resinosa), Japanese black pine (Pinus thunbergii) and Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. menziesii), were inoculated to test the effective host range of the ectomycorrhizal fungus Laccaria proxima and the possibility of utilizing pulp waste as a potting medium for containerized seedling production. Laccaria proxima tended to improve the container growth of Japanese black pine and white spruce, and significantly improved that of jack pine, mugo pine, black spruce, red spruce and Douglasfir. The growth of red pine and Japanese larch were only slightly improved with L. proxima. Pulp waste (33% by volume) had negative effects on tree seedling growth, except for Douglasfir (no significant effect). The interactions of Laccaria proxima and pulp waste varied; the hosts were significantly positive (P<0.01) in the case of jack pine and black spruce, but there was no significant effect for the rest. Negative effects were found with Japanese black pine. Use of pulp waste in seedling production of jack pine, black spruce, mugo pine, red spruce and Douglasfir inoculated with L. proxima and of Japanese black pine both with and without L. proxima is feasible, but further research is necessary to determine the optimal percentage of pulp waste that can be utilized in seedling production of tree species and the field performance of these seedlings.  Patterns of abundance of large piscivorous fish (>200 mm TL) were documented at two spatial and four temporal scales within the main lagoon of One Tree Reef on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Grouper (Serranidae), snapper (Lutjanidae) and wrasses (Labridae) were the most abundant large piscivores. On a large scale (hundreds of metres), patterns of predator abundance were consistently greater on the inner edge than centre of the lagoon over a range of temporal scales: days, weeks, months and years. On a small spatial scale (tens of metres), the abundance of large predatory fish was patchy. At both spatial scales, fish were consistently aggregated in particular areas and associated with specific structural features of the reef habitat. Predator abundance was high where live corals were predominant and the topography was more complex. Hence, predation pressure and its potential effects on the distribution and abundance of prey populations, both in time and space, may vary greatly within lagoonal environments.
