This study presents the length‐weight relationships (LWRs) for four marine finfishes namely, Alepes kleinii (Bloch, 1793), Cynoglossus macrostomus Norman, 1928, Epinephelus diacanthus (Valenciennes, 1828) and Opisthopterus tardoore (Cuvier, 1829) collected from Ratnagiri, West Coast of India. A total of 2149 specimens were measured for obtaining the LWRs. The range of slope b (2.473–3.252) was almost within the expected range of 2.5–3.5 (Journal of Applied Ichthyology, 22, 241, 2006). Particulate material recovered over an 18-month period from sediment traps deployed at a shallow-water nearshore Antarctic
site was analysed for photosynthetic pigments, aliphatic hydrocarbons and fatty acids. All components showed a distinct seasonal
variation, with high recovery rates during the summer open-water phytoplankton bloom and low rates under winter fast ice.
The amount of trapped material differed between the two summers, indicating inter-annual variability of vertical flux associated
with differences in the intensity of the summer phytoplankton bloom. Particulate material trapped in summer was dominated
by that which originated in diatoms. High recoveries of chlorophyll a, fucoxanthin, n-C21:6 hydrocarbon, 20:5(n-3) fatty acid and shorter chain (C15–C24) aliphatic hydrocarbons all pointed to a significant summer flux of ungrazed diatoms. There were, however, also signals of
zooplankton grazing activity (notably pyrophaeophorbide a), and the presence of C18:4(n-3) and C22:6(n-3) fatty acids suggested a small flux of material from flagellates and other
sources. Longer chain n-alkanes (C25–C34) indicative of nanoplankton were detected all year, but there was no significant deposition of zooplankton material in any
sample. The major recovery rate of photosynthetic pigments was in late summer (February to April), and the major grazing signal
occurred after the peak of the summer diatom bloom. Most of the diatom bloom appeared to settle out from the water column
without being grazed. The major seasonal contrast in the biochemistry of the trapped material was the dominance of the diatom
signature in summer, and in winter the predominance (but at much lower recovery rates) of material from nanoplankton.

Fern-feeding insects in Britain are mainly found on mature fronds in late summer. Six fern species (Dtyopteris filix-mas, D. dilatata, D. borreri, Phyllitis scolopendrium, Polyslkhum setiferum and Polypodium vulgare) were analysed for fibre, lignin, cellulose, tannins, cyanogenesis and thiaminase activity in an attempt to determine the biochemical basis for this seasonal pattern of attack. A bioassay was also carried out, using frond material incorporated in the diet of Spodoptera littoralis, to determine the effects of seasonal changes in fern toxins on a non-adapted, insect herbivore. The young fronds of all six species had a high protein content and low fibre-lignocellulose; protein levels decreased and cell wall materials increased as the fronds matured. Tannin concentrations and thiaminase activity showed a less consistent seasonal pattern. Tannins were present in the highest concentration in the young fronds of D. borreri, Polystichum and Polypodium and decreased with season; D. dilatata, Polystichum and Polypodium showed a similar pattern of thiaminase activity. The other species showed no strong seasonality in the levels of either tannins or thiaminase. No cyanogenic activity was detected in any of the fern species. Frond material from all six species decreased survivorship and growth rates of Spodoptera larvae. Larval performance and growth on diets containing fern material from young immature fronds was generally poorer than on diets containing material from mature fronds, collected later in the season. Neither tannin concentrations nor thiaminase activity levels closely corresponded to the observed interspecific and seasonal patterns of larval development and mortality, and other toxins must be involved. It is concluded that ferns are highly toxic to non-adapted herbivorous insects but the effects on adapted species are unknown. The restricted seasonal occurrence of a small number of insect species exhibiting specialized feeding habits suggests, however, that biochemical properties of the ferns determine this pattern of attack and limit the number of species which are able to exploit ferns as food resources. 相似文献

Inselbergs are isolated monolithic outcrops which are characterized by large areas of exposed crystalline rock. Due to harsh edaphic and microclimatic conditions, inselbergs are completely differentiated from their surroundings. Consequently they host a very distinct vegetation which is being investigated on a global scale over a six year period. The seasonal dynamics of Selected plant communities (Afrotrilepis pilosa mat, shallow depression, ephemeral flush vegetation) on granitic inselbergs in the Comoe National Park (NE Ivory Coast) were studied during the rainy period from May to November 1991 by recording all vascular plant species at 12 intervals. For the habitats investigated, the seasonal vegetation dynamics were related to the rainfall pattern. Maximum values both in species diversity and richness were attained in the first third of the rainy period. Drought in August and September caused a decline in species number and diversity in the shallow depression and ephemeral flush vegetation, resulting in mortality of more than 20% of the species. The individual communities studied differed considerably in species diversity and richness. We conclude that ephemeral flush and shallow depression communities are more species rich than the mat community which is dominated by the highly competitive and specialized K-strategist Afrotrilepis pilosa (a poikilohydric Cyperaceae) due to stochastic climatic perturbations which allow the maintenance of species rich non-equilibrium assemblages with r-strategists as major components. 相似文献

Gastrointestinal parasitism is one of the major constraints for profitable livestock production. The present study was conducted to determine the prevalence and seasonal variation in gastrointestinal helminthic infections in cattle of New Alluvial zone of West Bengal. A total 2520 faecal samples of cattle were collected from five different places of NAZ of West Bengal during the study period i.e. March 2014 to February 2015. The faecal samples were examined by standard sedimentation and floatation technique. The overall prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites was recorded as 55.71% in cattle of NAZ and Paramphistome (40.64%) was recorded as the predominant parasite followed by Strongyle group of nematodes (8.25%) and Fasciola (3.33%). Moniezia was the only cestode parasite recorded with an overall prevalence of 1.97%. Statistically significant (p < 0.05) variation was observed in the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths among the various seasons. Monsoon season has significantly (p < 0.05) higher prevalence of gastrointestinal helminthes (64.28%) followed by winter (57.14%) and lowest in summer (45.24%). Prevalence of Paramphistome (47.62%) and Strongyle (9.52) were also significantly (p < 0.05) higher monsoon compared to other seasons. The epidemiological knowledge/information gathered in the present study would be exploited for evolving strategic control method against gastrointestinal parasitic infections in cattle. 相似文献

The chemical composition of red seaweed Gracilaria cervicornis and brown seaweed Sargassum vulgare from Brazil was investigated. In this study, the relationship between the nutritive components of each species and the environment was established. Protein content varied from 23.05+/-3.04% to 15.97+/-3.04%. The highest value was found in G. cervicornis. The protein levels were positively correlated with nitrogen content and negatively with water temperature and salinity. Carbohydrate contents of both species varied significantly (p<0.01) and the values observed were superior to others chemical constituents. Contrary to carbohydrates, the lipid concentrations were the lowest recorded chemical component and varied slightly between the two species. Ash content was greater in S. vulgare (14.20+/-3.86) than in G. cervicornis (7.74+/-1.15). In general the variation in chemical composition was related to environment. 相似文献

The activity and the tissue distribution of the oxygen radical producing enzyme xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR) were measured in the digestive gland of the common marine mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis Lmk along an annual cycle. No xanthine oxidase (XOX) activity could be measured, the enzyme only displaying xanthine dehydrogenase (XDH) activity in all the cases. This is interpreted as a mechanism to avoid the harmful effects of the oxygen radicals that would be produced by XOX during periods following anoxic conditions at low tide. The highest XDH activities coincided with the late spring/early summer months, the activity maxima being recorded from May to July. Histochemically XOR activity was very pronounced in duct and stomach epithelial cells as well as in the surrounding connective tissue and hemolymph vessels, the activity increasing towards the summer months. These seasonal variations in XDH or XOR activities are possibly linked to hormonal changes governing the reproductive cycle and to changes in food availability. The localization of the protein in the connective tissue lining the hemolymph vessels was confirmed immunohistochemically using a polyclonal antibody against rat liver protein that cross-reacted specifically with a polypeptide of 150 kDa of molecular mass in homogenates of the digestive gland. This polypeptide was linked to cytosolic fractions isolated by differential centrifugation from mussel digestive glands. In paraffin sections the antibody labeled the digestive cells of digestive tubules, as well as the connective tissue surrounding the hemolymph vessels, gonadal follicles, digestive epithelia and certain protozoan parasites. Taken together our results suggest that in the digestive gland of bivalve molluscs XOR is involved in the metabolism of purines and in the scavenging of oxygen free radicals. 相似文献

Summary The seasonal variations of marine (collected at the ten fathom line-Station A) and estuarine (collected at the Mouth of the Vellar estuary-Station I) plankton of Porto Novo (India) are described, covering the period 1960–63. The biological, temporal and numerical variations of phytoplankton and zooplankton are described for the two stations. The succession of species was more or less similar at both stations, but certain forms like colonial Radiolaria, Scyphomedusae, Anthozoa, trochophore of Sipunculids, Stomatopod larvae and Protochordate larvae were relatively more confined to Station A, and crustacean larvae other than Stomatopods Actinotrocha larva, fish eggs and larvae were relatively more confined to Station I.The Diatom main peak was about June–July at Station A and about May–July at Station I. The Diatom peak was generally heralded with the appearance of Coscinodiscus. Noticluca usually showed three spurts- mainly two distict ones about May–June and August. The third development was only during certain years and not so intensive. Copepods showed two peaks generally during June–July after few days of the Diatom bloom, and during October–November following the first monsoon rains.The peaks of Diatoms, Peridinians, Noctiluca, Molluscan larvae and Tunicate larvae were more marked at Station A than at Station I. A rich and varied zooplankton was observed about February at Station A. The appearance of salps at Station A seems in a way to be related to salinity, when the salinity values were between 28.89–34.55, the salps appearing more with a fall in salinity. Similarly at Station I, Creseis acicula, Prawn larvae and fish larvae seem to be associated with a sudden fall in temperature and salinity when the monsoon rains start, at Station I.The numerical relationship of plankton at Station A was generally inverse between phyto- and zooplankton and this was generally parallel at Station I.
Sumario La variación estacional del plancton marino (collectado en la ten fathom lineestacción A) y estuarino (Mouth of the Vellar estuary) és descrita para el período 1960–63. Las variaciones biológicas, temporales y numéricas del fitoplancton y del zooplancton son descritas para las dos estacciones. La succesión de especies fué más o menos comparable en las dos estacciones; algunas formas como colonial radiolaria, scyphomedusae, anthozoa, trochophore y sipunculids, stomatopod larvae, y protochordate larvae fuéron confinadas a la estacción A, y otras como crustacean larvae, Actinotrocha larva, peces eggs y larvae confinades a la estacción I.El maximum para las diatomeas ocurrió en Junio–Julio en la estacción A,y Mayo–Junio en la estación I. Las diatomeas están representadas principalmente por el génere Coscinodiscus antes del maximum. El maximum para Noctiluca fue observado en Mayo–Junio y en Agosto. Los copepodes presentaran dos períodos de maximum Junio–Julio despues del maximum de las diatomeas y en Octubre–Noviembre. El maximum de las diatomeas, peridianians, Noctiluca, molluscan larvae y tunicate larvae en la estacción A fué mas distincto que en la estacción en el estuario. El zooplancton se mostró rico y variado en Febrero en la estacción A.La presencia de salpas en la estacción A parace ser relacionada en ciertos aspectos con la diminuición de la salinidad cuando esta fué 28.89–34.55. Por la misma forma la presencia de Creseis acicula, prawn larvae, peces eggs y larvae parace ser relacionada con diminuición de salinidad y temperatura del agua durante Octobre–Noviembre–Deciembre en la estacción I. Seasonal variability of phytoplankton species composition, abundance and physical and chemical factors influencing phytoplankton dynamics were investigated in the Aby lagoon system, south-eastern Ivory Coast, covering the main climatic seasons in 2006–2007. Seasonal and spatial variability of nutrient concentrations in the system were influenced by freshwater inflow from the Bia and Tanoé rivers. The decrease in the salinity gradient in Aby Lagoon, which is permanently stratified during the long dry season, increased the bottom inputs of soluble reactive phosphate and soluble reactive silicate which, in combination with good light penetration during the long dry season, enhanced phytoplankton production in the system. During the rainy seasons, water discharges into the system washed phytoplankton biomass out, preventing the development of blooms. Overall, 192 taxa from eight phyla were recorded: Bacillariophyta (32%), Chlorophyta (31%), Cyanobacteria (23%), Euglenophyta (12%), Dinophyta (0.5%), Xanthophyta (0.5%), Chrysophyta (0.5%) and Rhodophyta (0.5%). During the long dry season, Cyanobacteria cells comprised >50% of the phytoplankton abundance. The main phytoplankton taxa responsible for this high abundance were Microcystis aeruginosa, Oscillatoria princeps, Pseudanabaena limnetica, Aphanizomenon sp. 2 and Anabaena planctonica. 相似文献

Seasonal variability of methane in the rivers and lagoons of Ivory Coast (West Africa) 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We report a data-set of dissolved methane (CH4) in three rivers (Comoé, Bia and Tanoé) and five lagoons (Grand-Lahou, Ebrié, Potou, Aby and Tendo) of Ivory Coast (West Africa), during the four main climatic seasons (high dry season, high rainy season, low dry season and low rainy season). The surface waters of the three rivers were over-saturated in CH4 with respect to atmospheric equilibrium (2221–38719%), and the seasonal variability of CH4 seemed to be largely controlled by dilution during the flooding period. The strong correlation of CH4 concentrations with the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) and dissolved silicate (DSi) confirm the dominance of a continental sources (from soils) for both CO2 and CH4 in these rivers. Diffusive air–water CH4 fluxes ranged between 25 and 1187 μmol m?2 day?1, and annual integrated values were 288 ± 107, 155 ± 38, and 241 ± 91 μmol m?2 day?1 in the Comoé, Bia and Tanoé rivers, respectively. In the five lagoons, surface waters were also over-saturated in CH4 (ranging from 1496 to 51843%). Diffusive air–water CH4 fluxes ranged between 20 and 2403 μmol m?2 day?1, and annual integrated values were 78 ± 34, 338 ± 217, 227 ± 79, 330 ± 153 and 326 ± 181 μmol m?2 day?1 in the Grand-Lahou, Ebrié, Potou, Aby and Tendo lagoons, respectively. The largest CH4 over-saturations were observed in the Tendo and Aby lagoons that are permanently stratified systems (unlike the other three lagoons), leading to anoxic bottom waters favorable for a large CH4 production. In addition, these two stratified lagoons showed low pCO2 values due to high primary production, which suggests an efficient transfer of organic matter across the pycnocline. As a result, the stratified Tendo and Aby lagoons were respectively, a low source of CO2 to the atmosphere and a sink of atmospheric CO2 while the other three well-mixed lagoons were strong sources of CO2 to the atmosphere but less over-saturated in CH4. 相似文献

Summary The abundance of loricate choanoflagellates at three shallow inshore sites (< 30 m) near Davis, Antarctica from March 1982 to February 1983 showed marked variation which followed the seasonal cycle of chlorophyll a concentration. In summer the concentration of choanoflagellates ranged from 104–106 cells 1–1 while in winter they were in the order of 102 cells 1–1. Species seasonal succession was observed with Bicosta spinifera, Crinolina aperta and Parvicorbicula socialis, organisms which dominated the summer population, being absent in winter whereas Cosmoeca ventricosa and Saepicula leadbeateri were found only in winter. Summary Seasonal variations in various biochemical constituents in the tissues of Ophicephalus punctatus showed that. the fat content in the muscle was highest during November–January and lowest during June–October. Liver contained more fat than the muscle and its seasonal cycle was marked by two well defined peaks. Changes in the ovarian fat were also well defined seasonally. The moisture content in all the tissues varied inversely with the fat. Protein values in different tissues did not show as much fluctuations as fat. In muscle, protein remained high throughout the year except in January. In liver and gonads very low protein values were recorded during the winter months. Seasonal changes in the ash content were not very well marked in any of the three tissues.The seasonal variations in all the biochemical constituents seem related to the feeding intensity of the fish and the maturation of its gonads. Maximum and minimum values of fat fell in accordance with the high and low food intake. In the pre-spawning phase, more fat was stored in the muscle at first but subsequently the fat was mobilized in the liver and finally in the gonads. Peak ripeness was associated with an accumulation of greater protein and fat in the gonads (ovaries). During the spawning months the various constituents were depleted and the post-spawning phase of the fish was marked by minimal values of most of the biochemical constituents, excepting moisture and ash. 相似文献

The paper describes a year-round limnoplanktonic study of a freshwater pond in West Bengal, India. Always predominant over zooplankton, phytoplankton demonstrates three peaks. The relationships between pH and phytoplankton, between phosphate and green algae and between rotifers and diatoms are significant. The role of physico-chemical factors in determining different planktonic population is discussed. The Eurasian woodcock is a highly valued game bird in Western Europe from which c. 2.7 million individuals are harvested annually from an estimated population of 20–26 million birds. The population size and status remains uncertain due to the cryptic behaviour and widespread and solitary occurrence of woodcock, on breeding and wintering areas, making reliable population surveys difficult. Hunting bag records provide age ratios amongst bagged birds, but sex ratios remain poorly known because of the sexually monomorphic nature of this species. We used DNA analysis to determine sex ratios amongst 327 shot woodcocks from two hunting seasons in Denmark (1 October–31 January, 2012/13 and 2013/14). Based on bag totals, age ratios and sex ratios, juvenile females constituted 37%, juvenile males 27%, adult females 16% and adult males 20% of the annual woodcock bag. The female bias was related to a significant deviation from parity in the sex ratio amongst juvenile birds in October, although no such deviation was found at other times or amongst adults. Compared to limited data from other European countries, our data suggest that autumn migration of woodcock involves an initial wave of juvenile females followed by juvenile males and adults, and perhaps that males stay further north in Europe than females during autumn and winter. This migratory pattern would suggest that postponing the opening of the hunting season could reduce the hunting bag on reproductively valuable females in this polygamous species. 相似文献

Seasonal variation in Laminaria digitata and its impact on biochemical conversion routes to biofuels
Laminaria digitata is a highly prevalent kelp growing off the coast of the UK but has rarely been considered as a source of biomass to date. This study shows it can be used as a feedstock in both ethanol fermentation and anaerobic digestion for methane production. The study optimised several parameters in the fermentation of L. digitata and investigated the suitability of the macroalgae through the year using samples harvested every month. For both methane and ethanol production, minimum yields were seen in material harvested in March when the carbohydrates laminarin and mannitol were lowest. July material contained the highest combined laminarin and mannitol content and maximum yields of 167 mL ethanol and 0.219 m3 kg−1L. digitata. 相似文献

A survey of the isolation rate and population size of thermophilic campylobacters in lambs at slaughter was carried out to determine the seasonal variation of thermophilic campylobacters in ovine hosts. Isolation rates determined by enrichment methods were always higher than those using direct plating onto selective agar and showed that Campylobacter could be isolated from 91·7% ( n = 360) of samples from the small intestine of the lambs. Enumerations (MPN), done monthly over a 2-year period, averaged 4·00 log 10 ( n = 1080, S.D . 0·16) campylobacters g−1 fresh weight (fw) intestinal contents with some samples giving values higher than 7 log MPN gfw−1 . These results show that the prevalence of thermophilic campylobacters in sheep intended for slaughter is much higher than previously reported. Statistical analyses showed that there was a significant seasonal periodicity in the Campylobacter populations in the small intestines of lambs at slaughter ( P = 0·004) but that there was no statistical relationship with environmental parameters such as minimum and maximum temperature, rainfall or hours of sunshine. In an analysis along the length of the intestinal tract of lambs, campylobacters were isolated from 80% of small intestine and 30% of rumen samples, but not from the true stomach, large intestine or caecal samples. A survey of sheep grazing on salt marsh, fell (upland) and farm pasture showed that the isolation rate of thermophilic campylobacters in fresh faeces was substantially lower (29·3% ( n = 420)) than that from the small intestine of lambs at slaughter. No significant difference (>0·05) was found between the isolation rate of campylobacters from faeces sampled in late spring/early summer and autumn, nor between the different types of grazing. 相似文献
