The floral development of staminate and pistillate flowers of Ceratophyllum demersum was observed, with particular focus on the phyllotactic variation in staminate flowers, using scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). We discerned patterns of development of some important new morphological features, e.g., the difference and discontinuity between the organ initiation in stamens and that in bracts (or tepals) and the initial presence of a mucilaginous appendage on each pistil. Female flowers are considered to be very specialized through reduction. In male flowers stamen initiation changes between early and late floral development. The four or five stamens in the outermost whorl initiate first on the abaxial and lateral sides of the floral apex and only later on the adaxial side (unidirectional). Later the inner stamens initiate spirally, and this is the main pattern in the stamen initiation. Members of each whorl differ among themselves in time of initiation and in ultimate size. The phyllotactic variation in staminate flowers of Ceratophyllum, suggested by previous studies, is derived from the variation in stamen number and the difference of stamen initiation between the early and later stages. The development in Ceratophyllum has some similarities to those of ANITA plants except for Nymphaeales.

Reproductive units (RUs) of Trithuria, the sole genus of the early-divergent angiosperm family Hydatellaceae, are compared with flowers of their close relatives in Cabombaceae (Nymphaeales). Trithuria RUs combine features of flowers and inflorescences. They differ from typical flowers in possessing an "inside-out" morphology, with carpels surrounding stamens; furthermore, carpels develop centrifugally, in contrast to centripetal or simultaneous development in typical flowers. Trithuria RUs could be interpreted as pseudanthia of two or more cymose partial inflorescences enclosed within an involucre, but the bractlike involucral phyllomes do not subtend partial inflorescences and hence collectively resemble a typical perianth. Teratological forms of T. submersa indicate a tendency to fasciation and demonstrate that the inside-out structure-the primary feature that separates RUs of Hydatellaceae from more orthodox angiosperm flowers-can be at least partially modified, thus producing a morphology that is closer to an orthodox flower. The Trithuria RU could be described as a "nonflower", i.e., a structure that contains typical angiosperm carpels and stamens but does not allow recognition of a typical angiosperm flower. The term nonflower could combine cases of secondary loss of flower identity and cases of a prefloral condition, similar to those that gave rise to the angiosperm flower. Nonhomology among some angiosperm flowers could be due to iterative shifts between nonfloral construction and flower/inflorescence organization of reproductive organs. Potential testing of these hypotheses using evolutionary-developmental genetics is explored using preliminary data from immunolocalization of the floral meristem identity gene LEAFY in T. submersa, which indicated protein expression at different hierarchical levels.

TEM investigation of sieve-element plastids in three species of Trithuria, the sole genus of the small aquatic family Hydatellaceae, show that P-type plastids are absent from this genus and only starch-accumulating (S-type) sieve-element plastids are present. This discovery is consistent with the recent transfer of Hydatellaceae from the highly derived monocot order Poales (grasses and their allies) to the early-divergent angiosperm order Nymphaeales (waterlilies) based on molecular phylogenetic data. Species of Poales consistently possess P2-subtype plastids, in common with other monocots, but only S-type plastids are present in Nymphaeales. The results confirm that Hydatellaceae do not belong in monocots. Optimisation of the two major types of sieve-element plastid onto a recent phylogeny of early-divergent angiosperms confirms that S-type is the primitive form and indicates that P-type sieve-element plastids have evolved more than once in angiosperms.

Transition to flowering in the North-temperate bog plant Scheuchzeria palustris occurs in early May and results in the formation of a simple raceme with six flowers. Five of the flowers are subtended by large foliar bracts, while the sixth and last-formed flower on the inflorescence remains ebracteate. The individual flowers develop along a clearly trimerous pattern. The three outer tepals develop first, arising almost simultaneously at the periphery of the triangular floral apex. They are followed closely by the development of the three anti-tepalous outer stamens. The three inner tepals are next in the developmental sequence, alternating with the outer whorl of tepal-stamen pairs but arising at a slightly higher level on the floral meristem. Three inner stamens are initiated opposite the inner tepal primordia. Finally, three gynoecial primordia are initiated on the remaining central portion of the floral apex and alternating with the inner whorl of tepal-stamen pairs. Each carpel develops at first as a horseshoe-shaped structure. Two ovules form in each carpel, initiating on the adaxial margin of the carpel wall. Histogenesis of all floral appendages involves initially periclinal divisions in the second tunica layer followed by corresponding anticlinal divisions in the first tunica layer and concurrent activity in the underlying corpus. Separate procambial strands differentiate acropetally from the inflorescence axis to each tepal-stamen pair and then bifurcate. The vascular connection to the gynoecium develops directly from the strands in the tepal-stamen pairs. The results of this developmental study of the flower of S. palustris have a significant bearing on the positioning of this and related taxa within the Alismatidae and on the speculation of the phylogeny of the monocotyledon flower.

The ontogenetic process of the staminate and carpellate flowers of Schisandra sphenanthera Rehd. et Wils., an endemic species to China, was observed for the first time under the scanning electron microscope (SEM). In the staminate flowers, the perianth units and stamens were initiated acropetally in a continuous fasion with 2/5 spiral phyllotaxis, while no female structures were formed. Anthers were differentiated prior to the filaments formation. Throughout all the stages were the stamens arranged spirally on a columniform receptacle. In the carpellate flowers, the initiation sequence of the perianth units and carpels were similar to that of the staminate flowers. In contrast, no male structures were formed. Shortly after initiation, the carpel primordia began their marginal growth besides the apical growth and then appresses were formed on the adaxial surfaces of the primordia. However the lower margins of these appresses were inconspicuous, resulting in conduplicate carpels. Two ovules were developed on the inner surface near either lateral margins of the carpel, shaping laminar placentae. Compared with S. glabra (Brickell) Rehd., a related American species, the evolutionary trend of phyllotaxis of androecia is considered that stamens may change from spiral to approximately whorled arrangement, accompanying with the change of receptacle from a column to a flattened shield. It was also suggested that the stamens being numerous and uncertain in number become certain and decrease in number to 5 (4-7). Sterile stamens are observed and the unisexual nature of the flowers is discussed. Two types of carpel primordia are categorized, corresponding to two types of carpels, namely, ascidiate and conduplicate carpels, respectively.

The inflorescence and floral development of Caldesia grandis Samuel is reported for the first time in this paper. The basic units of the large cymo‐thyrsus inflorescence are short panicles that are arranged in a pseudowhorl. Each panicle gives rise spirally to three bract primordia also arranged in a pseudowhorl. The branch primordia arise at the axils of the bracts. Each panicle produces spirally three bract primordia with triradiate symmetry (or in a pseudowhorl) and three floral primordia in the axils of the bract primordia. The apex of the panicle becomes a terminal floral primordium after the initiations of lateral bract primordia and floral primordia. Three sepal primordia are initiated approximately in a single whorl from the floral primordium. Three petal primordia are initiated alternate to the sepal primordia, but their subsequent development is much delayed. The first six stamen primordia are initiated as three pairs in a single whorl and each pair appears to be antipetalous as in other genera of the Alismataceae. The stamen primordia of the second whorl are initiated trimerously and opposite to the petals. Usually, 9–12 stamens are initiated in a flower. There is successive transition between the initiation of stamen and carpel primordia. The six first‐initiated carpel primordia rise simultaneously in a whorl and alternate with the trimerous stamens, but the succeeding ones are initiated in irregular spirals, and there are 15–21 carpels developed in a flower. Petals begin to enlarge and expand when anthers of stamens have differentiated microsporangia. Such features do not occur in C. parnassifolia. In the latter, six stamen primordia are initiated in two whorls of three, carpel primordia are initiated in 1–3 whorls, and there is no delay in the development of petals. C. grandis is thus considered more primitive and C. parnassifolia more derived. C. grandis shares more similarities in features of floral development with Alsma, Echinodorus, Luronium and Sagittaria. © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2002, 140 , 39–47.

Trithuria (Hydatellaceae; Nymphaeales) is unique among early-divergent angiosperms in that its species are extremely small and most have exceptionally short, annual life histories. Given the evolution of these extremes of size and development, we sought to understand whether post-pollination processes still varied predictably with breeding system in Trithuria. To address this question, we studied two Western Australian species, Trithuria austinensis (dioecious, obligately outcrossing) and Trithuria submersa (bisexual, highly selfing). To document developmental timing, carpels were hand-pollinated, collected at sequential time points, and examined with light and fluorescence microscopy. In both species, pollen tubes first entered ovules<1 h after pollination, but the pollen tube pathway of outcrossing T. austinensis was almost four times longer and its pollen tube growth rates were up to six times faster (≤2,166 vs. 321 μm/h) than those of T. submersa. T. austinensis also exhibited greater male investment, slower pollen germination, and greater pollen tube attrition. These differences in male gametophyte development are predicted for outcrossers versus selfers in phylogenetically derived angiosperms. These new data for Hydatellaceae reinforce the idea that an acceleration of pollen tube development occurred in the Nymphaeales stem lineage, before the origin of Hydatellaceae. We infer that a recent evolutionary transition to selfing in T. submersa has been accompanied by predictable modifications to reproductive development, which, because of the ancient relationship between Hydatellaceae and all other angiosperms, suggests that traits underlying the lability of flowering plant post-pollination biology were present early in their history.

Reproductive morphology and development are described in the Brazilian grass Streptochaeta spicata, in order to assess the homologies of the characteristic grass inflorescence, termed a spikelet, and other reproductive organs. Streptochaeta possesses some features that are commonly found in Poaceae, including a well-differentiated embryo. It also possesses some relatively unusual, presumably derived features, such as non-plumose stigmas, which indicate that it could be insect-pollinated. It shares some features with other early-divergent grasses, such as Pharus, which could represent plesiomorphic conditions for grasses. The inflorescence unit in Streptochaeta has been interpreted as a compound branching system or pseudospikelet. The present data suggest that it is a highly modified spikelet, with a modified flower borne either on a different axis to the basal bracts (glumes) or on the same axis as the basal bracts. The three bracts below the stamens are interpreted as homologous to the lodicules. The Streptochaeta spikelet could be considered as morphologically intermediate between the true spikelet of grasses and reproductive units of close grass relatives.

The organogenesis of staminate and carpellate flowers of Schisandra chinensis (Schisandraceae) was investigated with scanning electron microscopy, with observations on the development of tepals reported for the first time. The results showed that there is no interval between the initiation of the last tepal and that of the first stamen or carpel, and that the shapes of tepal, stamen, and carpel primordia are similar. The tepals and stamens of staminate flowers are initiated acropetally in a continuous spiral Fibonacci phyllotaxis, with no carpel structures observed; the filaments are not connate. The organogenesis of the carpellate flowers is similar to that of the staminate flowers, but with no evidence of stamen development. The carpels are ascidiate without postgenital fusion. Three androecial characters of Schisandra and Kadsura are discussed in a phylogenetic context. The subglobose or obovoid androecium of Schisandra propinqua and Schisandra plena may be homologous with that in sections Kadsura and Sarcocarpon. The plesiomorphic form of the androecium within the two genera is likely to be elongate with more than ten free stamens.

The development of the inflorescence and flowers are described for Gymnotheca chinensis Decaisne (Saururaceae), which is native only to southeast China. The inflorescence is a short terminal spike of about 50–70 flowers, each subtended by a small bract. There are no showy involucral bracts. The bracts are initiated before the flowers, in acropetal order. Flowers tend to be initiated in whorls of three which alternate with the previous whorl members. No perianth is present. The flower contains six stamens, and four carpels fused in an inferior ovary containing 40–60 ovules on four parietal placentae. Floral symmetry is dorsiventral from inception and throughout organ initiation. Floral organs are initiated in the following order: 1) median adaxial stamen, 2) a pair of lateral common primordia which bifurcate radially to produce two stamen primordia each, 3) median abaxial stamen, 4) a pair of lateral carpel primordia, 5) median adaxial carpel, 6) median abaxial carpel. This order of initiation differs from that of any other Saururaceae previously investigated. The inferior ovary results from intercalary growth below the level of stamen attachment; the style elongates by intercalary growth, and the four stigmas remain free. The floral structure of Gymnotheca is relatively advanced compared to Saururus, but its assemblage of specializations differs from that of either Anemopsis or Houttuynia, the other derived genera in the Saururaceae.

Increasingly robust understanding of angiosperm phylogeny allows more secure reconstruction of the flower in the most recent common ancestor of extant angiosperms and its early evolution. The surprising emergence of several extant and fossil taxa with simple flowers near the base of the angiosperms-Chloranthaceae, Ceratophyllum, Hydatellaceae, and the Early Cretaceous fossil Archaefructus (the last three are water plants)-has brought a new twist to this problem. We evaluate early floral evolution in angiosperms by parsimony optimization of morphological characters on phylogenetic trees derived from morphological and molecular data. Our analyses imply that Ceratophyllum may be related to Chloranthaceae, and Archaefructus to either Hydatellaceae or Ceratophyllum. Inferred ancestral features include more than two whorls (or series) of tepals and stamens, stamens with protruding adaxial or lateral pollen sacs, several free, ascidiate carpels closed by secretion, extended stigma, extragynoecial compitum, and one or several ventral pendent ovule(s). The ancestral state in other characters is equivocal: e.g., bisexual vs. unisexual flowers, whorled vs. spiral floral phyllotaxis, presence vs. absence of tepal differentiation, anatropous vs. orthotropous ovules. Our results indicate that the simple flowers of the newly recognized basal groups are reduced rather than primitively simple.

We characterized the distribution of AGAMOUS (AG) RNA during early flower development in Arabidopsis. Mutations in this homeotic gene cause the transformation of stamens to petals in floral whorl 3 and of carpels to another ag flower in floral whorl 4. We found that AG RNA is present in the stamen and carpel primordia but is undetectable in sepal and petal primordia throughout early wild-type flower development, consistent with the mutant phenotype. We also analyzed the distribution of AG RNA in apetela2 (ap2) mutant flowers. AP2 is a floral homeotic gene that is necessary for the normal development of sepals and petals in floral whorls 1 and 2. In ap2 mutant flowers, AG RNA is present in the organ primordia of all floral whorls. These observations show that the expression patterns of the Arabidopsis floral homeotic genes are in part established by regulatory interactions between these genes.

Background and Aims Trithuria

is the sole genus of Hydatellaceae, a family of the early-divergent angiosperm lineage Nymphaeales (water-lilies). In this study different arabinogalactan protein (AGP) epitopes in T. submersa were evaluated in order to understand the diversity of these proteins and their functions in flowering plants.

Methods

Immunolabelling of different AGPs and pectin epitopes in reproductive structures of T. submersa at the stage of early seed development was achieved by immunofluorescence of specific antibodies.

Key Results

AGPs in Trithuria pistil tissues could be important as structural proteins and also as possible signalling molecules. Intense labelling was obtained with anti-AGP antibodies both in the anthers and in the intine wall, the latter associated with pollen tube emergence.

Conclusions

AGPs could play a significant role in Trithuria reproduction, due to their specific presence in the pollen tube pathway. The results agree with labellings obtained for Arabidopsis and confirms the importance of AGPs in angiosperm reproductive structures as essential structural components and probably important signalling molecules.

Utilizing scanning electron microscopy, we studied the early floral ontogeny of three species of Caesalpinia (Leguminosae: Caesalpinioideae): C. cassioides, C. pulcherrima, and C. vesicaria. Interspecific differences among the three are minor at early and middle stages of floral development. Members of the calyx, corolla, first stamen whorl, and second stamen whorl appear in acropetal order, except that the carpel is present before appearance of the last three inner stamens. Sepals are formed in generally unidirectional succession, beginning with one on the abaxial side next to the subtending bracts, followed by the two lateral sepals and adaxial sepal, then lastly the other adaxial sepal. In one flower of C. vesicaria, sepals were helically initiated. In the calyx, the first-initiated sepal maintains a size advantage over the other four sepals and eventually becomes cucullate, enveloping the remaining parts of the flower. The cucullate abaxial sepal is found in the majority of species of the genus Caesalpinia. Petals, outer stamens, and inner stamens are formed unidirectionally in each whorl from the abaxial to the adaxial sides of the flower. Abaxial stamens are present before the last petals are visible as mounds on the adaxial side, so that the floral apex is engaged in initiation of different categories of floral organs at the same time.

This study deals specifically with floral organogenesis and the development of the inflorescence of Philodendron squamiferum and P. pedatum. Pistillate flowers are initiated on the lower portion of the inflorescence and staminate flowers are initiated on the distal portion. An intermediate zone consisting of sterile male flowers and atypical bisexual flowers with fused or free carpels and staminodes is also present. This zone is located between the sterile male and female floral zones. In general, the portion of bisexual flowers facing the male zone forms staminodes, and the portion facing the female zone develops an incomplete gynoecium with few carpels. The incomplete separation of some staminodes from the gynoecial portion of the whorl shows that they belong to the same whorl as the carpels. There are two levels of aberrant floral structures in Philodendron: The first one is represented by the presence of atypical bisexual flowers, which are intermediates between typical female flowers and typical sterile male flowers. The second one is the presence of intermediate structures between typical carpels and typical staminodes on a single atypical bisexual flower. The atypical bisexual flowers of P. squamiferum and P. pedatum are believed to be a case of homeosis where carpels have been replaced by sterile stamens on the same whorl. A quantitative analysis indicates that in both species, on average, one staminode replaces one carpel.

The inflorescence of Psoralea pinnata sensu lato is composed of dichasial cymes of three to seven flowers in each bract axil. However, the main inflorescence terminal is indeterminate. Cymes are very unusual among legumes, occurring in perhaps six or seven genera. The 'cupulum' is a unique structure found only in Psoralea among legumes. While highly variable in form, it serves as a protective structure around the calyx during development. Developmentally the cupulum results from fusion by intercalary growth of three to four successive bracts on the pedicel. Paired bracteoles are also produced above the cupulum and below the calyx, but they are very reduced and easily overlooked. Their presence is evidence that the cupulum is not part of the flower proper. Organogeny in P. pinnata is unidirectional in each floral whorl, starting on the abaxia! side, except for a minor exception in precocity of the vexillary (adaxial) stamen arising with the two lateral stamens of the same inner whorl. There is no overlap between whorls. The carpel is initiated early, during or just after petal initiation and before stamen initiation.
