In ectotherms, environmental temperature is the most prominent abiotic factor that modulates life-history traits. We explored the influence of environmental temperature on reproduction in the Madagascar ground gecko (Paroedura picta) by measuring reproductive traits of females at constant temperatures (24, 27, 30 °C). Females of this species lay clutches of one or two eggs within short intervals. For each female, we measured egg mass for the first five clutches. For one clutch, we also measured the energetic content of eggs via bomb calorimetry. Temperature positively influenced the rate of egg production, but females at 30 °C laid smaller eggs than did females at either 24 or 27 °C. Dry mass of eggs scaled allometrically with wet mass, but this relationship was similar among thermal treatments. Females at all temperatures produced eggs with similar energy densities. Females at 24 °C allocated less energy per time unit (≈8 mW) to reproduction than did females from higher temperatures (≈12 mW). However, females at either 24 or 27 °C allocated significantly more energy per egg than did females at 30 °C. Our results demonstrate that a complex thermal sensitivity of reproductive rate can emerge from distinct thermal sensitivities of egg size, egg composition and clutch frequency.  相似文献

Factors determining clutch size of birds have long been the central issue in studies in life histories. It is assumed that the configuration of brood patches could limit the maximum clutch size. To test this hypothesis we manipulated clutch sizes and measured egg temperature as well as reproductive consequences in black-tailed gulls Larus crassirostris , which usually lay two egg clutches and have three brood patches. Mean egg temperature in 4-egg clutches (32.6±1.0°C) was significantly lower than in 2-egg (34.6±0.4°C) and 3-egg clutches (34.1±0.4°C), because egg temperature of the coolest egg within a 4-egg clutch was often substantially lower than the other three eggs. The proportion of eggs hatching from 4-egg clutches (11.6%) was lower than those of 2-egg (49.1%) and 3-egg clutches (52.0%). Four-egg clutches had longer incubation periods (29.6±1.3 day) than 2-egg (28.1±1.7 day) and 3-egg clutches (28.0 ±1.3 day). The results indicate that incubation capacity, which may be determined by the configuration of brood patches, limits the maximum clutch size in black tailed gulls, but not the actual clutch size typically laid.  相似文献

The electric organ discharge (EOD) in Brachyhypopomus pinnicaudatus is modified by temperature and reproductive state. We studied the influence of these variables upon a complex behavior, the jamming avoidance response (JAR). Experiments were performed in non-reproductive fish and in two groups of fish after the induction of reproductive state (by nature or by acclimation at 28°C). JARs were elicited at 20 and 30°C by free-run electric stimuli with different Ls (interval difference between stimulus and EOD). In non-reproductive fish, JARs induced by stimuli with +Ls showed temperature sensitivity, with smaller responses at 30°C. Conversely, similar JARs were obtained at both temperatures in reproductive fish. These observations were replicated in curarized preparations. Stimuli with –Ls were almost ineffective in non-reproductive fish at 30°C, whereas adequate JARs were shown by reproductive fish. Phase-locked stimuli were used to evaluate the duration of the low-threshold electrosensory periods preceding and following the EOD. In non-reproductive fish, the temperature step induced a shortening of these periods. The opposite effect was observed in reproductive fish, probably explaining the differences in JAR capability. A prolongation of the low-threshold periods would favor the perception of electrocommunication signals during courtship. JAR changes would be a consequence of this adaptation.  相似文献

Size can have strong effects on reproductive success in both males and females, and in many species large individuals are preferred as mates. To estimate the potential benefits from mate choice for size in both sexes, I studied the effects of the size of each sex on the reproductive output of pairs of Banggai cardinalfish, Pterapogon kauderni, a sexually monomorphic obligate paternal mouthbrooder. When pairs were allowed to form freely, a size-assortative mating pattern was observed and larger pairs had a higher reproductive output as determined by total clutch weight and egg size. To separate the potential benefits from mate choice for size for each sex, I subsequently used these pairs to form reversed size-assortative pairs, that is, the largest male paired to the smallest female and vice versa. I found a positive correlation between male size and clutch size: relatively heavier clutches were found in pairs where females were given a larger male. This suggests that the size of the male influences clutch weight. For egg size, however, the size of both sexes seemed important. The study reveals the benefits of mutual mate choice on size in this species: larger females provide larger eggs and larger males can brood heavier clutches. Furthermore, these results suggest that females differentially allocate resources into the eggs according to the size of the mate.Copyright 2002 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour. Hoopoe Upupa epops males produce a very simple song, with a repertoire size of one, in which the main difference between different strophes of a male and between the songs of different males is the number of elements they include (strophe-length). In several passerine species it has been shown that strophe-length is a sexually selected trait that reflects male quality and correlates with reproductive success. Here we analyse whether in a non-passerine, the Hoopoe, strophe-length of males is correlated with several variables of their reproductive success. Females paired with males singing long strophes laid their first clutch earlier, produced larger first clutches and laid second clutches after a successful first one more frequently than those paired with males singing short strophes. Moreover, males with long strophes produced more fledglings in their first clutches and in the whole season, partly because they brought more food for the brood than males with short strophes. The relationships found are not mediated by age effects. Previously we have shown that Hoopoe females in the early spring are attracted preferentially to songs with long strophes. Here we show that males singing long strophes also obtain postpairing benefits in terms of reproductive success, and that females paired with these males obtain direct benefits because these males provide greater feeding effort in the second half of the nestling period. These findings support the hypothesis that in the Hoopoe, strophe-length is a sexually selected cue under direct selection.  相似文献

We studied the reproductive strategy of a Rock Sparrow Petronia petronia population, breeding in nest boxes in the Western Alps (Italy). Over seven years of study (1991–1997) 19% of the females laid second clutches after successfully fledging the first one. Among these, about 50% deserted the first nest when nestlings were 14.3 d old (range=8–19 d), 3.6 d before fledging (range=1–8 d). In all these cases the primary male mate took over all parental duties and successfully reared the young. Inter-clutch time of deserting females was 8.1 d shorter than that of non-deserting double-brooded females. The breeding success of deserting females was significantly greater than that of both single-brooded females and double-brooded females that did not desert their first brood. The fledging success of the second clutches depended on the status of the secondary male: females paired with previously unpaired males had a higher fledging success than those that paired with a polygynous male. The frequency of deserting females varied among years from 0 to 16%, and was significantly and positively correlated with the frequency of males available as mates at the time of desertion. In this study we showed that sequential polyandry with brood desertion is a regularly occurring strategy in the female Rock Sparrow.  相似文献

Reproduction of the dominant Antarctic copepod Calanus propinquus was studied in February–April, 1989 aboard the R.V Dmitry Mendeleev during cruise N° 43 to the Weddell Sea. Single females were kept at 0 °C in the laboratory for 56 days with abundant food concentration (above 300 µg C l–1 of Platymonas viridis). Females released clutches at night at 2–3 day intervals. Most clutches contained from 10 to 40 eggs, mean 37.3 eggs female–1. Average carbon content of an egg was 0.37 ± 0.05 µg C. The maximum daily egg production rate of 30–50 eggs female–1 d–1 was observed for the first 3 days of the laboratory incubation, corresponding to 3.7–6.2% body C. The state of gonadal development of females showed the decline of the reproductive season in late February. The data suggest that egg laying in the region under study starts in December and lasts until March. The state of ovarian maturation, changes in vertical distribution and biochemical body composition of females suggest the possibility of two-year life cycle in C. propinquus in the southern Weddell Sea.  相似文献

Three micro algae, Ankistrodesmus convolutus, Scenedesmus incrassatulus and Chlorella vulgaris, at three concentrations, were tested as diets for Moina macrocopa. Their effect on reproduction, fecundity, growth and survival was evaluated. All three algae satisfied the nutritional requirements of M. macrocopa, despite their difference in size. The best concentration, expressed in dry weight, was 5 mg l–1 for all three. Time to first reproduction was 4 days with all diets. Average time between clutches was 33 hours, and maximum number of clutches was 12; the highest average number of offspring per brood was 27. The largest broods were the fourth to sixth, depending on the diet. Ephippium hatching depends on temperature, taking only 24 hours at 30 °C and 48 hours at 27 °C. This species could be an important test organism in aquatic bioassays, and a live food in aquaculture.  相似文献

The thermal environment can induce substantial variation in important life-history traits. Experimental manipulation of the thermal environment can help researchers determine the contribution of this factor to phenotypic variation in life-history traits. During the reproductive season, we kept female northern grass lizards, Takydromus septentrionalis (Lacertidae), in three temperature-controlled rooms (25, 28 and 32 °C) to measure the effect of the maternal thermal environment on reproductive traits. Maternal thermal environment remarkably affected reproductive frequency and thereby seasonal reproductive output, but had little effect on reproductive traits per clutch or hatchling traits. Females kept at 32 °C produced more clutches and thus had shorter clutch intervals than females from 28 to 25 °C. Clutch size, clutch mass, relative clutch mass, egg size and hatchling traits did not vary among the three treatments. The eggs produced by the females were incubated at 27 °C and the traits of hatchlings were measured. The result that egg (offspring) size was independent of maternal thermal environments is consistent with the prediction of the optimal egg size (offspring) theory. The eggs produced by low temperature females (28 and 25 °C) took longer time to complete their post-oviposition development than did eggs produced by high temperature females (32 °C). This suggests that the eggs from low temperatures might have been laid when the embryos were at relatively early stages. Therefore, maternal thermal environment prior to oviposition could affect post-oviposition development in T. septentrionalis.  相似文献

Venezuelan river tetra, Astyanax bimaculatus juveniles of 34.1–36.7mm standard length and 0.83–1.0g wet weight were acclimated for four weeks to 24–33°C, which are approximate average minimum and maximum river temperatures throughout the year. The fish acclimated to 24, 27, 30, and 33°C were exposed for 10000 minutes at 35, 36, 37, 38, and 39°C to determine individual heat resistance times. To determine acclimation rates, the juveniles acclimated to 24 and 30°C were tested for individual heat resistance times at 39°C by changing acclimation temperatures. The individual heat resistance times were increased in accordance with an increase in acclimation temperature and a decrease in test temperature, indicating that acclimation level has a great influence on thermal resistance of the fish tested. As the fish were transferred from 24 to 30°C (upward acclimation), they completed their acclimation level in a few days, while those transferred from 30 to 24°C (downward acclimation) required about 14 days. It has reaffirmed the following general behavior: the rate of gain in thermal resistance is fast and the loss in heat tolerance is very slow. This physiological phenomenon is very important for tropical fish, which acclimates rapidly in rising temperature during the hot day and does not lose this level in decreasing temperature during the cool night. Consequently, a tropical fish can maintain its maximum resistance level, adapt well in thermally fluctuating tropical waters, and survive in lethally high temperatures caused by a sudden increase in temperature during hot day.  相似文献

Summary Urine flow increased with acute temperature increases and showed temperature acclimation. When measured at 20 °C the urine flow of 10 °C acclimated fish was 3.2 times greater than the urine flow of 30 °C acclimated fish. In fish acclimated to 24 °C renal reabsorption of Na and Cl was independent of temperature over an intermediate range of temperatures (14–24 °C) but near the lower lethal temperature (6.5 °C) renal Na and Cl reabsorption was inhibited. Water permeability of the renal tubules was not affected by acute temperature change between 6.5 and 24 °C. Urine osmolality and urine Na, K and Cl concentrations showed nearly perfect temperature compensation in fish acclimated to 10 °C and 30 °C. The rate of renal excretion of Na and Cl showed temperature acclimation in that Na and Cl ecxretion measured at 20 °C was 7 to 8 times greater in 10 °C acclimated fish than in 30 °C acclimated fish. The rate of excretion of Na and Cl measured at 30 °C in 30 °C acclimated fish was approximately 1.7 times the rate of excretion measured at 10 °C in 10 °C acclimated fish. The branchial uptake of Na, measured in tap water, of fish acclimated to 10, 20 and 30 °C in demineralized water increased with acute increases in temperature. When the three acclimation groups were compared at an intermediate temperature (20 °C), the 10 °C acclimated group showed the highest rate of net uptake, and the 30 °C group the lowest rate of uptake. This apparent temperature acclimation of Na uptake was correlated with differences in the plasma Na concentration of the three acclimation groups. Plasma Cl concentrations were also correlated with acclimation temperature in fish acclimated in demineralized water, but the rate of net Cl uptake was considerably less than that for Na. Sodium and Cl uptake in fish which had been acclimated in tap water was very variable and was not clearly affected by acute changes in temperature. Uptake of Na and Cl by fish held in tap water did not show temperature acclimation. The difference between uptake and excretion of fish acclimated in tap water was not significantly different from zero, indicating that the fish were in salt balance. The study was supported by National Institutes of Health Grant GM 16932-02 to Dr. Bodil Schmidt-Nielsen. I am grateful to Dr. Schmidt-Nielsen for many useful discussions during the course of this work.  相似文献

The effects of different temperatures and relative humidities (RHs) were tested on various reproductive parameters of Ornithodoros turicata, an argasid tick that inhabits gopher tortoise burrows in Florida, USA. The pre-oviposition, oviposition and incubation periods of the ticks decreased as temperature increased. These periods were also affected by the RH. The number of eggs oviposited was affected significantly by the combined effect of temperature and RH. Fewer eggs were laid by ticks in the 24°C regimes and the 27°C/95%RH regime compared to those in the other temperature/RH groups. There was an inverse relationship between the number of eggs oviposited and the percentage of hatched larvae that was correlated with the temperature and RH. Ticks reared at 27°C/90%RH and 30°C/90%RH laid more eggs than those reared in the other combinations of temperature and humidity but fewer larvae hatched from these eggs. The reproductive fitness index (RFI) values were highest in females held in the 24°C groups and the 30°C/95%RH group, although significantly more larvae hatched at the lower temperatures. The optimum reproductive conditions for O. turicata under laboratory conditions appear to be 24°C and 90–95%RH. While mating occurred at all temperatures, none of the females laid eggs at 22°C. The ticks may move preferentially to low temperatures when not feeding to remain above the critical equilibrium humidity and/or below the critical metabolic level necessary for prolonged survival. However, most female ticks oviposited after 45 days when moved to 27°C/95%RH. Ornithodoros turicata females may have a limited capability to delay oviposition until an optimal microenvironment for egg deposition can be located in the burrow.  相似文献

The extreme environmental changes observed in high-shore rockpools occupied by Tigriopus brevicornis, provide a significant physiological challenge that may have implications for the energetics and hence the life history characteristics of this species. The present study was designed to assess the effect of this environmental variation on the reproductive development time and output of T. brevicornis in terms of duration of the various stages in ovary and egg sac development and maturation as well as naupliar development time to the first copepodite stage and total numbers of copepodites produced. There was a significant difference in reproductive development time and output in the three test salinities with only successful development to copepodite I stage seen in normal seawater (35 psu). There was also a successful release of nauplii seen at the low salinity (5 psu), but no subsequent survival to the copepodite I stage, whilst there was not even a development of egg sacs in the high salinity test medium (70 psu). There was also a significant difference in reproductive development times in the three test temperatures with fastest ovary development in the high temperature (23 °C) and slowest development time in the lowest temperature (5 °C). However, it should be noted that the highest number of nauplii produced was actually in the mid temperature (12 °C), not the high temperature. Exposure to hypoxic and anoxic conditions had a significantly detrimental effect on reproductive development with slower development time through the reproductive stages and no individuals surviving to copepodite stage I from the hypoxic and anoxic test conditions, but good development from the normoxic conditions. The present study indicates that animals living in high-shore rockpools may incur a considerable energetic cost, due to the environmental changes that are characteristic of this habitat and the importance of resource allocation in these different physiological conditions is paramount to the species' survival.  相似文献

Summary Many species of fish show a partial or complete thermal compensation of metabolic rate on acclimation from summer to winter temperatures. In the present study Crucian carp (Carassius carassius L.) were acclimated for two months to either 2° C or 28° C and the effects of temperature acclimation on mitochondrial content and capillary supply to myotomal muscles determined.Mitochondria occupy 31.4% and 14.7% of slow fibre volume in 2°C- and 28° C-acclimated fish, respectively. Fast muscles of coldbut not warm-acclimated fish show a marked heterogeneity in mitochondrial volume. For example, only 5 % of fast fibres in 28° C-acclimated fish contain 5 % mitochondria compared to 34 % in 2° C-acclimated fish. The mean mitochondrial volume in fast fibres is 6.1 % and 1.6 % for coldand warm-acclimated fish, respectively.Increases in the mitochondrial compartment with cold acclimation were accompanied by an increase in the capillary supply to both fast (1.4 to 2.9 capillaries/fibre) and slow (2.2 to 4.8 capillaries/fibre) muscles. The percentage of slow fibre surface vascularised is 13.6 in 28° C-acclimated fish and 32.1 in 2° C-acclimated fish. Corresponding values for fast muscle are 2.3 and 6.6 % for warm and cold-acclimated fish, respectively. Maximum hypothetical diffusion distances are reduced by approximately 23–30 % in the muscles of 2° C-compared to 28° C-acclimated fish. However, the capillary surface supplying 1 3 of mitochondria is similar at both temperatures.Factors regulating thermal compensation of aerobic metabolism and the plasticity of fish muscle to environmental change are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Summary 1) When a thermal gradient (20–40° C) was established along a laboratory nest, Camponotus mus nurse workers showed a photoperiodic circadian rhythm of temperature preferences for brood rearing. Two different temperatures were daily selected to translocate the brood, i.e. 30.8° C selected at the middle of the photophase, and 27.5° C selected during the scotophase, 8 h later. 2) The daily temperature response of nurse workers consisted of paired high and low-temperature translocations, with a 8 hs-interval in between: high-temperature translocation was shown to be entrained by the photophase length, whereas low-temperature translocation was shown to be dependent on the precedent one. 3) Prey deprivation to the colony modified the brood transport behaviors resulting in translocations of only cocoons and large (ripe) larvae, stages in which the pupation processes are triggered. Small larvae and eggs remained located at 27.5° C. 4) Evaluation of pupa developmental time as well as percentage of pupa mortality at different temperature regimes allowed to construct an efficiency index relating pupa survival and cocoon developmental time. In the range of temperatures selected by nurses, the index reached its maximal values. 5) The ecological significance of these results is discussed.  相似文献

Studies were carried out to investigate the effects of 5°, 10°, 15°, 20°, 25°, 30°, 35°, 40° and 45°C on growth, sexual maturity, reproduction and survival of the freshwater planorbid snail, Gyraulus convexiusculus, vector of echinostomiasis, under laboratory conditions. The growth rate of juvenile and sexually mature snails was at minimum at 15°C and was maximum at 35°C. Sexual maturation time was minimum at 35°C and maximum at 20°C. Fecundity was minimum at 15°C and maximum at 35°C. The minimum average and maximum number of eggs per egg capsule was reached at 35°C and lowest at 15°C. 30°C was the optimum temperature for survival of juvenile snails, while sexually mature snails reached maximum survival time at 20°C.  相似文献

Unpredictability in the temporal availability of susceptible hosts is likely to act as a selection pressure affecting the life history strategies of parasites. In highly variable environments the future of the lineage can be secured by spreading the risk, for example, by producing descendants that differ in their timing of emergence. Counter to this, in predictable environments a single "best-adapted" phenotype is expected. We asked whether ectoparasitic Argulus coregoni egg hatching pattern can be explained as a genetically canalized individual trait; an instance of phenotypic plasticity or bet-hedging. We collected egg clutches laid by individual A. coregoni females in early and late reproductive period of the lice population and randomized the clutches within 3 treatments. Intra- and inter-clutch variability in the hatching dynamics of A. coregoni eggs was monitored and the reproductive potential assessed. On average A. coregoni females laid 317 (SD±176.6) eggs. We found that the plasticity in the hatching dynamics among A. coregoni eggs was remarkable. Noticeable peaks in hatching were followed each of the repeated artificial "winter treatments" in 1°C. Repeated 2 weeks cold treatments induced relatively bigger hatching peaks than 2 days cold treatments compared to controls at room temperature. However, in all treatments, egg clutches hatched through an extended period of 7 months on average and the total hatching percentages were similar. We found that intra-clutch variability in hatching among eggs laid by single A. coregoni females was greater than inter-clutch variability. Our data support the predictions of the adaptive bet-hedging strategy in relation to egg-hatching dynamics. Response to cooling and bet-hedging may be adaptive for such species like A. coregoni since by synchronizing the life-cycle with the seasonal environment will assist transmission and parasite fitness.  相似文献

Females of Zeiraphera canadensis Mut. & Free., the spruce bud moth, were reared in the laboratory at constant and alternating temperatures, and in an outdoor insectary, to (1) determine the effects of temperature, age and size on several reproductive parameters and, (2) to test the hypothesis that body size-temperature interactions influence longevity and realized fecundity. Egg maturation was linearly related to age and large moths developed eggs at a higher rate than small ones. Mcan lifetime oviposition rate reached a maximum and remained stable at temperatures 20° C while the mean lifetime rate of egg maturation increased linearly with temperature, indicating that higher temperatures adversely affect oviposition. The production of nonviable eggs increased with age but also with temperature, suggesting high temperature (25° C) reduces egg quality and/or hinders fertilization. The realized fecundity and longevity of females reared under an alternating temperature regime (mean 20° C) was significantly less than that of females reared at constant 20° C. Similar realized fecundity, longevity and mean lifetime oviposition rates for females reared at temperatures alternating between 10 and 25° C (mean 20° C) and those at constant 25° C reflected the inability of females to recover from elevated diurnal temperatures. Longevity was positively related to female body size at constant 15 and 20° C but the relationships were negative for moths exposed to diurnal temperatures equal to or exceeding 25° C. Due to the reduced longevity of large moths at high temperatures, linear regressions between size and realized fecundity were only significant at constant temperatures 20° C. At higher temperatures, the size-fecundity relationship became curvilinear as a result of the diminished reproductive output of large individuals. Reduced fecundity and longevity of large females at high temperatures may have been due to elevated internal temperatures of large-bodied moths. Large females in a controlled-environment chamber maintained at 25° C developed an internal temperature excess (i.e. temperature above ambient) of nearly 2° C while small-bodied females exceeded ambient by only 0.3° C. However, when held at 20° C, the temperature excess of large-bodied moths was much less than 1° C and small-bodied females did not differ from ambient. Such interactions between temperature and body size suggest that there should be stabilizing selection toward moderate-sized individuals and may explain the absence of size-related effects on fecundity and longevity previously reported for several other lepidopterans.  相似文献

The long-term in vivo effects of a single subcurative dose (200 mg/kg body wt of mouse) of praziquantel on the ultrastructure of the female reproductive system of Schistosoma mansoni were investigated. Morphological changes in the structure of both the vitelline gland and the ovary were apparent within 24 hr post-treatment, and lead to a partial or complete regression of both organ systems. Associated with this regression was a cessation of egg production. In surviving, paired females, irrespective of the initial severity of the drug-induced damage, both the vitelline gland and the ovary completely redeveloped and lead eventually to a resumption of egg production. In contrast, in unpaired, previously mature females the reproductive system also regressed but did not redevelop. In these cases, although the initial changes in the reproductive system were the result of drug action, the long-term regressive changes were due to discontinued male stimulation.  相似文献

In birds, hatching failure is pervasive and incurs an energetic and reproductive cost to breeding individuals. The egg viability hypothesis posits that exposure to warm temperatures prior to incubation decreases viability of early laid eggs and predicts that females in warm environments minimize hatching failure by beginning incubation earlier in the laying period, laying smaller clutches, or both. However, beginning incubation prior to clutch completion may incur a cost by increasing hatching asynchrony and possibly brood reduction. We examined whether Florida scrub jays (Aphelocoma coerulescens) began incubation earlier relative to clutch completion when laying larger clutches or when ambient temperatures increased, and whether variation in incubation onset influenced subsequent patterns of hatching asynchrony and brood reduction. We compared these patterns between a suburban and wildland site because site-specific differences in hatching failure match a priori predictions of the egg viability hypothesis. Females at both sites began incubation earlier relative to clutch completion when laying larger clutches and as ambient temperatures increased. Incubation onset was correlated with patterns of hatching asynchrony at both sites; however, brood reduction increased only in the suburbs, where nestling food is limiting, and only during the late nestling period. Hatching asynchrony may be an unintended consequence of beginning incubation early to minimize hatching failure of early laid eggs. Food limitation in the suburbs appears to result in increased brood reduction in large clutches that hatch asynchronously. Therefore, site-specific rates of brood reduction may be a consequence of asynchronous hatching patterns that result from parental effort to minimize hatching failure in first-laid eggs. This illustrates how anthropogenic change, such as urbanization, can lead to loss of fitness when animals use behavioral strategies intended to maximize fitness in natural landscapes.  相似文献
