In the evolution of primates there has been a tendency towards reduction in jaw length and prognathism, mandibular canine size and first molar cusp number, and third molar presence. These oral structures were contrasted, and compared with cranial size, body height and weight, and finger length in 118 males and 102 females of the Burlington Growth Centre. Body weight was significantly related to canine width and to jaw length and prognathism. These relationships were stronger in the males than in the females. The evolutionary reduction in these dental dimensions may result from an evolutionary reduction in genetically determined body size. In the males the number of molar cusps was related to finger length and cranial height. Agenesis of third molars was related to the length of the maxilla in both sexes. In the females, canine width was related to the number of cusps of the first molars, agenesis of third molars, and length of a finger. Simultaneous reductions in dental structures were more frequent in the females.  相似文献

Cytoagglutination with Concanavalin A was studied in SV3T3 cells as a function of cell density. Agglutinability was low in subconfluent cultures (midpoint concentration 200 μg/ml) buth high in multilayered cultures (midpoint concentration 10–15 μg/ml). Normal 3T3 cells retained low agglutinability (midpoint concentration 1000 μg/ml) even when seeded at superconfluent density. By growing SV3T3 cells at low and at high density in the same culture dish it could be excluded that density modulation of cytoagglutination was caused by differences in pH or nutrient supply. Changes in the density of ConA binding sites or in ATP concentration could not account for the 20-fold difference in agglutinability between cells from high and low density regions. Cell kinetic studies demonstrated that all cells in high and low density cultures were in log phase of growth, differing only in the amount of intercellular contact. In Py-BHK cells, density modulation of agglutinability was much less demonstrated. Unlike SV3T3 cells, these cells rearranged on the substrate when seeded at low density to form clusters of cells with intensive overlapping contact. The results suggest that in transformed cells, cell-to-cell contact is a major determinant of high agglutinability which therefore seems the result, rather than the cause, of uncontrolled growth.  相似文献

The effects of pollution by organic matter, oil or industrial waste on marine communities are remarkably similar. Diversity values fall, biomass and numbers of organisms initially rise and then fall as the pollution load is increased. Diversity indices are, however, insensitive to pollution-induced changes and have to be assessed subjectively. Departure from a log-normal distribution of individuals among species offers a sensitive and objective method of assessing perturbation effects on communities. Under severe pollution stress, the dominant species are those which have a flexible life-history ranging from direct development to a planktonic larva and the ability to undergo short-term genetic selection. Species have a somewhat less flexible life-history strategy show increased abundance under conditions of slight pollution. The increase in abundance of seven or eight neither rare nor common species, which gives the departure from a log-normal distribution, is suggested as being the most significant and the earliest detectable change caused by pollution in a community. Thus the presence of a species in a polluted area may be more a question of life-history strategy than the tolerance of adverse environmental conditions. If this hypothesis is correct, considerable doubt must beplaced on the ecological relevance of data from toxicity tests.  相似文献

Obesity is the common expression of several diverse interacting genetic, familial and environmental factors. In addition to having hypertrophic fat cells because of inordinate triglyceride accumulation, many patients with childhood-onset obesity and those who are massively obese regardless of age at onset have an excessive number of adipocytes. Several endocrinologic and metabolic abnormalities are associated with obesity. Triglyceride formation in and lipid mobilization from hypertrophic adipocytes are exaggerated. The increased availability of free fatty acids to the liver contributes to the excessive synthesis of triglycerides and very-low-density lipoproteins; thus, hypertriglyceridemia is frequently associated with obesity. Hepatic synthesis and biliary excretion of cholesterol are also increased. Most of the excess cholesterol is stored in fat cells. The plasma concentrations of high-density lipoproteins are decreased. Hyperinsulinemia, which is characteristically found in the obese, leads to a decreased number of insulin receptors in target cells. The relative insulin insensitivity of the obese frequently results in glucose intolerance. The endocrinologic and metabolic abnormalities are correctable by an appropriate program of meal planning and physical activity.  相似文献

The paper sets out the novel shape of current Western populations as to age composition, and demonstrates that their drastic ageing has been virtually instantaneous. European populations are described as uniquely old, with no precedent whatever in human history. Moreover, all the world''s populations are undergoing the same process, including those of the developing societies, at an even faster pace. The general failure of people at large to recognize the process, and their persistent, entirely anachronistic attitudes to the older members of their societies, is described as cultural lag. The development now beginning of the so-called bean-pole family, vertical kin links between contemporary relatives stretching over four generations or more, with progressively fewer lateral linkages, is sketched out. The necessity of all persons having to live in the presence of their future selves is insisted on, with its corollary about having to pay personally in lowered subsistence levels for the doubled life span. The emergence of what is termed a third age is run over, and it is suggested that its presence might create a new civilization, one of the features of which might be the absence of enforced idleness due to unemployment.  相似文献

The chymotrypsin-like proteins (chymotrypsin-CT,chymotrypsinogen-CTG, trypsin-T and modified chymotrypsins-at Met 192-MCT and at Tyr 146, 171-TCT), gamma-irradiated in the presence of air, were investigated. Irradiation leads to the unfolding of the native structure of CT-like proteins both in solution and in the dry state, which was shown by the tryptophan fluorescence, viscosimetry and microcalorimetry. The radiation yield of unfolded molecules Gconf was estimated and compared with (1) the rate constants for the reactions of OH-radicals with the proteins as determined by the p-nitrosodimethylaniline, (2) general stability of protein globule using the difference of the energies of the unfolded and globular conformations and (3) the radiation yield of tryptophan destruction in proteins-G-trp. There was a correlation between the values of Gconf and G-trp. The ratio G-trp/Gconf, which defines the number of destroyed tryptophan residues for one unfolded protein molecule, was constant within the limits of error. For CT, MCT, TCT and CTG, this ratio was on the average 3-2, and for T it was 2-2 residues. These facts point to the role of tryptophan destruction in the unfolding of the native structure of CT-like proteins on irradiation.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine how often Saskatchewan physicians changed career paths during medical training and practice. DESIGN: Population survey (mailed questionnaire). SETTING: Saskatchewan. PARTICIPANTS: All 1077 active members of the Saskatchewan Medical Association were sent a questionnaire; 493 (45.8%) responded. OUTCOME MEASURES: Long-term career goal or plan in next-to-last year of undergraduate medical school, probable choice of career if forced to choose at that time, and number of physicians who changed their field of training or practice at any time since graduation. RESULTS: In all, 57.8% (237/410) of the respondents were currently practising in a field different from that planned in their next-to-last year of medical school, 63.5% (275/436) were not practising in the field they would have chosen if forced to at that time, and 42.9% (211/492) had changed their field of training or practice at some time since graduation. Older physicians, those who graduated outside of Canada and specialists were the most likely to have changed career paths, family physicians, and those who graduated in Saskatchewan were the least likely to have changed. CONCLUSION: The current system of postgraduate training in Canada does not permit career changes of the sort made by most of the practising Saskatchewan physicians in the survey sample. The implications of this new system are as yet unknown but require careful monitoring.  相似文献

A systematic study of the pH dependent changes in the range 6.6--7.4 of 2,3 bisphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) was performed in the presence and absence of glucose during transitional and steady states. The results indicate that 2,3-DPGase breaks down 2,3-DPG nealy independent of pH at a rate of 480 mu moles 2,3-DPG/1 cells.h. The 2,3-DPG mutase is practically completely inhibited below pH 6.9. The 2,3-DPG level in the presence of glucose reaches a pH dependent steady state after about 18 h. The share of the 2,3-DPG bypass in the steady state decreases from 24% at pH 7.4 to 12% at pH 7.0. The formation of pyruvate corresponds to the beadkdown of 2,3-DPG after consumption of an unknown reducing substance.  相似文献
