Hydroxycinnamoyl acid amides (HCA's) were found to be important components in the inflorescences of different Araceae species. HCA's occurred in large amount in spathes and in the male and female flowers, and were totally absent from the sterile flowers, commonly found on Araceae spadices. Differences in the distribution of HCA's were noted between male and female flowers. Thus the amount of neutral HCA's was always greater in the male than in the female flowers and the female flowers generally contained more basic HCA'S. In the inflorescences of some Araceae species in the Monsteroideae and Philodendroideae (genera Monstera, Raphidophora and Philodendron), the aromatic amines tyramine and dopamine were very abundant, with concentrations ranging from 1 to 4 mg of each amine per g fr. wt.  相似文献

We present an overall scheme for chemical mutagen risk assessment, which leads naturally to consideration of Haber's rule, a classical concept of toxicology. A rationale is given for considering compartmental models based on mammalian anatomy and physiology as the most reasonable and practical conceptual framework for risk assessment. Haber's rule is extended to the area of chemical dosimetry, defined in terms of our compartmental models. Then it is proved that Haber's rule holds for any system of linear ordinary differential equations with constant coefficients which is physically realizable. Finally, we comment on non-linearities and on the Blum-Druckey model for time-to-occurrence of tumors.  相似文献

This article presents a survey of ontogenetic studies in paleobotany, and of biologically relevant mathematical results available from such techniques as finite element analyses, algorithmic systems, and computer simulation. Dynamic representations of growth are possible when the observed cellular arrangements in fossils are mathematically described. Successive computer solutions of parameterizing equations allow for the extrapolation of ontogenetic trends forwards and backwards in time (i.e., more and less mature stages, respectively), as well as the interpolation of missing stages or portions of an organism's development. The hypothetical constructions derived from these techniques may be tested against direct comparisons with the fossil being simulated and/pr proposed modern analogues. Similarly, multicellular organisms or portions of organisms (e.g., leaves, sporangia) may be constructed as arrays of symbols — each symbol representing a cell or group of cells. Development in such models is simulated by providing instructions for cell division, cell death, or alteration in cellular states, e.g., vegetative to reproductive. Illustrative simulations of Parka, Mastopora, Rhynia and Calamites are presented and paleobotanical conclusions concerning their respective growth patterns are drawn.  相似文献

Characteristics of evolutionarily stable strategies, or ESS's, are investigated for a general class of evolutionary models. Both differential equation and difference equation models are considered. Hydroxylation of p-chlorotoluene with heminthiol complexes, Fenton's system and Udenfriend's system was studied and the complexes assessed as models of cytochrome P-450 monooxygenases. Five species of possible hydroxylation products of p-chlorotoluene, namely, p-chlorobenzyl alcohol, 2-chloro-5-methylphenol, p-chlorobenzaldehyde, 4-chloro-2-methylphenol and 5-chloro-2-methylphenol, were studied using high performance liquid chromatography. The oxidation reactions were characterized by the yields of hydroxylation products and the product ratio. The system consisting of hemin and cysteine ethyl ester as well as Udenfriend's system gave relatively high hydroxylation yields and the former only induced a methyl migration during hydroxylation (methyl NIH shift). However, neither Fenton's nor Udenfriend's systems induced a methyl NIH shift. The hemin-thiol complex is thus concluded to be a good chemical model of cytochrome P-450 monooxygenases.  相似文献

An earlier paper presented models which allow the relative advantages of different prey dispersions to be assessed for two cases: when the prey's main defence is concealment, and when prey may evade the predator (Treisman 1975). With these as a basis, an economic model for predator-prey interaction is developed which takes explicit account of the conflicts between the need to maintain watch for a predator and the prey's other needs. The model embodies arguments based on statistical decision theory which allow factors such as the degree of predation threat, the watchfulness of the prey and the number of watchers to be related to the expected value of the prey's performance. The model provides a basis for predicting the optimal number of watchers or optimal group size under various conditions. The advantages of different group configurations are compared, and it is shown that animals which aggregate (and maintain a high sensory decision criterion) will have an advantage over solitary animals under certain conditions.  相似文献

We report laboratory experiments with yellow-eyed juncos (Junco phaeonotus) revealing that the birds' foraging preferences for variable rewards respond not only to the mean, but also the variance, of food rewards. The nature of their preferences for variable rewards is related to their expected daily energy budget. We summarize the birds' preferences in utility functions for energetic rewards. Since mean reward size is inadequate to predict their behaviour, we believe that foraging models should consider environmental stochasticity and an animal's response to this variation.  相似文献

A large research literature indicates that men perceive women as more attractive when they are at high fertility than at low fertility within the ovulatory cycle. However, it remains unclear whether women also perceive women as more attractive at high fertility. This study examined women's ratings of samples of natural body odor collected from naturally-cycling women at high and low fertility within the cycle and from hormonal contraceptive-using women at mid-cycle. Like men, women rated naturally-cycling women's high-fertility scent samples as more attractive than their low-fertility samples. Women rated hormonal contraceptive (HC) users' scent samples as more attractive than naturally-cycling women's high- and low-fertility samples, though the difference between HC and high-fertility samples was statistically significant only when raters were treated as the unit of analysis. These findings reveal a potentially important role for scent communication in women's perceptions of other women and are consistent with the notion that the ovulatory cycle could influence women's interactions with one another. The findings also highlight the need for rigorous investigations of the possible impacts of hormonal contraception on women's attractiveness and social relationships with other women.  相似文献

The cerebrovascular amyloid protein from a case of adult Down's syndrome was isolated and purified. Amino acid sequence analysis showed it to be homologous to that of the β protein of Alzheimer's disease. This is the first chemical evidence of a relationship between Down's syndrome and Alzheimer's disease. It suggests that Down's syndrome may be a predictable model for Alzheimer's disease. Assuming the β protein is a human gene product, it also suggests that the genetic defect in Alzheimer's disease is localized on chromosome 21.  相似文献

Does moral culture contribute to the evolution of cooperation? Here, we examine individuals' and communities' models of what it means to be good and bad and how they correspond to corollary behavior across a variety of socioecological contexts. Our sample includes over 600 people from eight different field sites that include foragers, horticulturalists, herders, and the fully market-reliant. We first examine the universals and particulars of explicit moral models. We then use these moral models to assess their role in the outcome of an economic experiment designed to detect systematic, dishonest rule-breaking favoritism. We show that individuals are slightly more inclined to play by the rules when their moral models include the task-relevant virtues of “honesty” and “dishonesty.” We also find that religious beliefs are better predictors of honest play than these virtues. The predictive power of these values' and beliefs' local prevalence, however, remains inconclusive. In summary, we find that religious beliefs and moral models may help promote honest behavior that may widen the breadth of human cooperation.  相似文献

Length of time in polymorphism is investigated as a possible evolutionary criterion for Mendel's laws in the case of two alleles at one locus and finite population. Deterministic models with constant and random segregation schemes are investigated. In deterministic models the optimum segregation system depends on the zygotic selection and is Mendelian only in symmetric models. In finite population models the initial gene frequencies interact with the segregation to determine mean time to fixation. In deterministic models with random distortion reduction of the variance of the distortion is more likely to produce polymorphism.  相似文献

Biological temperature-dependent rate models based on Arrhenius' and Eyring's equations have been formulated by Johnson & Lewin (1946), Hultin (1955), and Sharpe & DeMichele (1977). The original formulation of Sharpe and DeMichele is poorly suited for non-linear regression. Very high correlations of parameter estimators occassionally make regression with their equation impossible using Marquardt's algorithm (1963).This analysis describes a new formulation of Sharpe and DeMichele's model that greatly alleviates the non-linear regression problem. It is partly based on Hultin's formulation (1955). Biological and graphical interpretation of the model parameters is discussed. Regression suitability is illustrated with a typical data set. Similar modifications to the equations of Hultin (1955) and Johnson & Lewin (1946) are described.  相似文献

Tihonov's Theorems for systems of first-order ordinary differential equations containing small parameters in the derivatives, which form the mathematical foundation of the steady-state approximation, are restated. A general procedure for simplifying chemical and enzyme reaction kinetics, based on the difference of characteristic time scales, is presented. Korzuhin's Theorem. which makes it possible to approximate any kinetic system by a closed chemical system, is also reported. The notions and theorems are illustrated with examples of Michaelis-Menten enzyme kinetics and of a simple autocatalytic system. Another example illustrates how the differences in the rate constants of different elementary reactions may be exploited to simplify reaction kinetics by using Tihonov's Theorem. All necessary mathematical notions are explained in the appendices. The most simple formulation of Tihonov's 1st Theorem ‘for beginners’ is also given.  相似文献

Solubilization of fibrin monomers (Fm's) is usually performed with dilute acetic acid, urea or sodium bromide. These solvents can affect the biological properties of Fm's. Therefore we describe a new method to keep Fm's in solution, under milder conditions i.e. by generating them in Dcate solutions and avoiding non-physiological conditions. The in vivo behaviour of iodinated rat Fm's injected in rats and prepared by this new method was compared with that of Fm's dissolved in acetic acid, urea or sodium bromide.Fm's prepared in Dcate solutions accumulate rapidly, within 10 minutes after injection, in all organs tested, predominantly in kidney, liver and lung, probably by interaction with endothelial cells. The blood radioactivity remains nearly constant during the first 90 minutes and decreases thereafter exponentially. Fm's dissolved in sodium bromide behave similarly. However, Fm's dissolved in acetic acid or urea behave differently and do not accumulate in organs. This suggests that Fm's loose their capability to accumulate in organs and probably to interact with endothelial cells when they have been dissolved in acetic acid or urea.The slow exponential clearance phase does not differ significantly between the various Fm's and their T12'S are estimated to lie between 5 and 7 hours.  相似文献

The transition to low fertility worldwide has led to introduction of diverse frameworks across disciplines to understand its causes and consequences. Previous attempts to compare the relative importance of the key factors influencing women's fertility decision-making largely focused on a single rather than multiple steps of decision-making—an important problem if different factors are associated with different steps. Furthermore, insufficient attention has been paid explicitly to husband's and already-born children's influences, two potentially important factors. Here we introduce a framework covering three steps of reproductive decision-making—ideal family size, fertility desire and fertility intention—and test it using multi-level survey data collected from Chinese one-child mothers. Mother's attitudes towards having two children were paramount factors underlying her ideal family size, and husband's and the firstborn child's attitudes were critical to her desire to have a second child, which in turn played a decisive role in her intention to have a second child. Although husband's attitude was related to all steps, most factors were only relevant to one step; e.g., perceived child mortality and value for old-age security predicted ideal family size, admiration—a prerequisite for social learning—for two-child families predicted fertility desire, and physical/economic constraints primarily predicted fertility intention. Our study emphasizes multiple decision-makers in family reproduction; indicates the relative importance of fertility-influencing factors could vary with steps of decision-making; and has important implications for population policy in low-fertility societies.  相似文献

Special definitions are proposed for three concepts representing characteristics of female mammals when they are in estrus. Attractivity refers to the female's stimulus value in evoking sexual responses by the male. Proceptivity connotes various reactions by the female toward the male which constitute her assumption of initiative in establishing or maintaining sexual interaction. Receptivity is defined in terms of female responses necessary and sufficient for the male's success in achieving intravaginal ejaculation. Attempts are made to measure each variable in the S-R paradigm and to identify the causal agents determining each aspect of the estrous female's behavioral characteristics.  相似文献

The effect of model reliability on children's choices to learn socially versus individually is pertinent to theories addressing cultural evolution and theories of selective trust. Here the effect of a reliable versus unreliable model on children's preferences to learn socially or individually was examined, as well as their subsequent imitation on a puzzle box task. Experiment One (N = 156) found children were more likely to ask to learn socially when presented with a novel task, after witnessing an unreliable rather than a reliable model. Experiment Two (N = 40) found children select a new unknown model, over the previously unreliable model, suggesting a preference to learn socially was created, although not specifically from the unreliable model. Experiment Three (N = 48) replicated children's learning preference in Experiment One with a new task, and showed children's attention is drawn towards other sources of social information (another adult model) when viewing an unreliable model, and also found a reliable model caused more fidelity of imitation. Together these results suggest that model unreliability causes greater social learning requests and attention to other, even novel, models when they are available. These findings evidence human children's strong propensity to learn socially compared with non-human animals; and suggest there is a more complicated relationship between learning preference, model reliability and selective trust than has been captured in previous research.  相似文献

Two glycoproteins have been isolated from the cell walls of baker's yeast. One is a glucan-protein complex which has been partially characterised as having a branched carbohydrate structure composed of chains of (1→3)-linked β-d-glucosyl residues, some of which are attached by (1→6)-linkages to the main chain. Immobilization of this glycoprotein was achieved by covalent attachment to Sepharose, and the product was used to isolate a number of (1→3)-β-d-glucan hydrolases from Helix pomatia, malted barley, and Basidiomycete QM806. The second glycoprotein, a mannan-protein complex, after immobilization, has been used in the purification of an α-d-mannosidase from jack-bean meal.  相似文献
