The effect of brassinolide (BR) on the reproductive developmentof higher plants was investigated using three different experimentalsystem. Direct application of BR to the staminate inflorescenceof Luffa cylindrica induced bisexual and pistillate flowers, and eventually caused the inflorescence to develop into a shootthat was similar to the main shoot. However, the activity ofBR on this sex modification was inferior to that of N6-benzylaminopurine. BR slightly hastened the flowering of nonvernalized radish plants,Raphanus satiuus cv. Miyashige-sofuto, whereas no such effectwas observed in vernalized plants. GA3 promoted flowering bothin nonvernalized and vernalized plants. BR had no activity to induce flowering in a short day plantPerilla frutescence under noninductive conditions. (Received July 9, 1985; Accepted November 18, 1985) 相似文献

Single gibberellin (A4+7) treatments induced the appearanceof staminate floral buds in several consecutive nodes on themain stem of genetically female cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.).The staminate buds appeared next to pistillate buds which showedvarious degrees of degeneration. Similarly, repeated GA treatmentsinduced the appearance of staminate flowers in otherwise strictlyhermaphrodite plants, next to bisexual flowers. However, thebisexual buds, unlike the pistillate ones, did not show anydeleterious effects of the GA treatment. Therefore, it is inferredthat the hormonally induced staminate buds did not develop bysexual reversion of would-be pistillate or bisexual buds, butrather, represent adventitious buds which, in normally grownfemale or hermaphrodite plants, never develop. It thus seemsthat predetermined pistillate or bisexual buds do not changeinto staminate ones, while change in the reverse direction hasbeen demonstrated in the past (at least for the gynoecious ones). The effectiveness of the GA treatment in the gynoecious plantsshowed an acropetal gradient both within the affected region,as well as along the main stem. Autoradiographic histologicalexaminations showed that the course of development of the inducedstaminate floral bud did not differ from that of normally developingbuds. (Received June 16, 1977; ) 相似文献

Intergeneric Translocation of Floral Stimulus across a Graft in Monoecious Cucurbitaceae with Special Reference to the Sex Expression of Flowers 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effect of floral stimulus on flower sex expression in monoeciouscucurbits was examined using a qualitative short-day plant,Sicyos angulatus L. Sicyos was induced to flower not only bygrafting it onto a flower-induced plant of the same speciesbut also by intergeneric grafting Onto the day-neutral plantCucumis sativus L. or the quantitative short-day plant Luffacylindrica Roem under noninductive long-day conditions. Sicyosplant grafted onto various cucumber varieties having differentgenetic backgrounds for their sex expression developed bothstaminate and pistillate inflorescences with similar sex expression. When the availability of floral stimulus was restricted as inthe case of grafting of Sicyos onto young cucumber seedlingsat the cotyledonary stage, most inflorescences appearing onthe Sicyos were staminate ones. Pistillate flowers formed onthe cucumber receptors substantially increased when they weregrafted onto Sicyos donors which had a sufficient number ofleaves induced by short-days as compared with those graftedonto noninduced ones. These results suggest that the availabilityof floral stimulus participates in the sex expression of flowersin Cucurbitaceae. Undeveloped pistillate inflorescences, whichoccasionally appear on Sicyos scion, flowered normally whenN6-benzylaminopurine was directly applied to the inflorescence. Sagittaria papillosa Buch. is monoecious with unisexual flowers, pistillate below, staminate above, typically with an unbranched scape. A large population with unusual numbers of staminate and bisexual flowers on the lowest whorl of the inflorescence and many particles was quantitatively evaluated. First-formed inflorescences had more staminate and bisexual flowers than those produced later. Branched scapes were predominantly found to be the second inflorescence produced by a given plant. Genetic crosses between flowers on recemes and panicles produced no branched inflorescences. When grown under greenhouse conditions all tested plants had racemes with pistillate flowers in the lower whorls and staminate ones above. Data from soil parameters, daylengths and air temperatures are compared to reported information on modification of flower sexuality by these factors. 相似文献

Aqueous solutions of silver nitrate (10–100 g/plant) and cobalt chloride (125–500 g/plant), injected into the main stem of plants of the pistillate cv. 240 ofRicinus communis when the vegetative shoot apex was beginning to become reproductive, induced the formation of staminate (male) flowers with viable pollen in the normally strictly pistillate (female) terminal inflorescence, their number increasing with the dose of Ag+ and Co2+. No formation of bisexual flowers was noted. Female flowers pollinated with pollen from the induced male ones produced fruits and viable seeds. 相似文献

Patterns of Assimilate Distribution and Source--sink Relationships in the Young Reproductive Tomato Plant (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Patterns of distribution of 14C were determined in 47-day-oldtomato plants (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) 24 h after theapplication of [14C]sucrose to individual source leaves fromleaves 110 (leaf 1 being the first leaf produced abovethe cotyledons). The first inflorescence of these plants wasbetween the buds visible and the firstanthesis stages of development. The predominant sink organs in these plants were the root system, the stem, the developing first inflorescence and the shoot apex(all tissues above node 10). The contribution made by individualsource leaves to the assimilate reaching these organs dependedupon the vertical position of the leaf on the main-stem axisand upon its position with respect to the phyllotactic arrangementof the leaves about this axis. The root system received assimilateprincipally from leaf 5 and higher leaves, and the stem apexfrom the four lowest leaves. The developing first inflorescencereceived assimilates mainly from leaves in the two orthostichiesadjacent to the radial position of the inflorescence on thevertical axis of the plant; these included leaves which weremajor contributors of 14C to the root system (leaves 6 and 8)and to the shoot apex (leaves 1 and 3). This pattern of distributionof assimilate may explain why root-restriction treatments andremoval of young leaves at the shoot apex can reduce the extentof flower bud abortion in the first inflorescence under conditionsof reduced photoassimilate availability. Male plants of spinach (Spinacea oleracea L.) senesce following flowering. It has been suggested that nutrient drain by male flowers is insufficient to trigger senescence. The partitioning of radiolabelled photosynthate between vegetative and reproductive tissue was compared in male (staminate) versus female (pistillate) plants. After the start of flowering staminate plants senesce 3 weeks earlier than pistillate plants. Soon after the start of flowering, staminate plants allocated several times as much photosynthate to flowering structures as did pistillate plants. The buds of staminate flowers with developing pollen had the greatest draw of photosynthate. When the staminate plants begin to show senescence 68% of fixed C was allocated to the staminate reproductive structures. In the pistillate plants, export to the developing fruits and young flowers remained near 10% until mid-reproductive development, when it increased to 40%, declining to 27% as the plants started to senesce. These differences were also present on a sink-mass corrected basis. Flowers on staminate spinach plants develop faster than pistillate flowers and have a greater draw of photosynthate than do pistillate flowers and fruits, although for a shorter period. Pistillate plants also produce more leaf area within the inflorescence to sustain the developing fruits. The (14)C in the staminate flowers declined due to respiration, especially during pollen maturation; no such loss occurred in pistillate reproductive structures. The partitioning to the reproductive structures correlates with the greater production of floral versus vegetative tissue in staminate plants and their more rapid senescence. As at senescence the leaves still had adequate carbohydrate, the resources are clearly phloem-transported compounds other than carbohydrates. The extent of the resource redistribution to reproductive structures and away from the development of new vegetative sinks, starting very early in the reproductive phase, is sufficient to account for the triggering of senescence in the rest of the plant. 相似文献

In both reproductive and vegetative plants of Lolium temulentumL., the export of 14C-labelled assimilates from each healthyleaf on the main shoot to terminal meristem, stem, tillers, and roots was measured each time a new leaf was expanded, fora period of 5 to 6 weeks. Some labelled assimilates moved fromeach leaf on the main shoot to every meristem in the same shoot,as well as to the tops and roots of adjacent organically attachedtillers. The terminal meristem of the reproductive shoot, which includedthe developing inflorescence, received 7080 per centof the carbon assimilated by the emerged portion of the growingleaf, 1525 per cent of the carbon assimilated by thetwo youngest expanded leaves, and 510 per cent of thatfrom each of the older leaves. A similar pattern of carbon supplyto the terminal meristem was found in vegetative shoots, exceptthat older leaves on young vegetative shoots supplied even lessof their carbon to the terminal meristem. The general conclusionis that developing leaves at the tip of the shoot receive aboutthe same proportion of carbon from each leaf as does a developinginflorescence. Young expanded leaves provided most labelled assimilates forstem growth; during both reproductive and vegetative growth, expanded leaves increased their export of labelled carbon tostem, and exported less of their 14C to roots and sometimesto tillers. In these reproductive and vegetative shoots, grown in a constantexternal environment, the major changes in the pattern of distributionof labelled assimilates appeared to be the result of increasedmeristematic activity in stem internodes; the development ofan inflorescence had no obvious direct effect on the carboneconomy of shoots. 相似文献

The Interaction of Genetic, Environmental, and Hormonal Factors in Stem Elongation and Floral Development of Cucumber Plants 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Hypocotyl length was found to vary between cucumber plants carryingdifferent genes controlling sex expression. Among lines havingonly unisexual flowers (genotype M/M), the homozygous monoeciousplants (st+/st+) had significantly longer hypocotyls than theirgynoecious counterparts (st/st), heterozygous gynoecious plants(st+/st) being intermediate. Similarly, hypocotyls of plantsof an andromonoecious line (st+/st+ m/m) were significantlylonger than in their hermaphrodite counterparts (st/st m/m).Differences in intemode length were also significant and inthe same direction. Since stem and particularly hypocotyl elongationin cucumber is known to be very sensitive to applied gibberellin, these findings suggest the existence of differences in the effectivelevels of endogenous gibberellins in the different sex types, higher levels being correlated with stronger male tendency. This conclusion is in good agreement with the known effect ofapplied gibberellin on sex expression (enhancement of the maletendency) in cucumber. Application of gibberellin (GA4+GA7) and exposure to summerconditions (long days and relatively high temperature) inhibitedthe development of pistillate flowers while winterconditions (short days, lower temperature) had a similar effecton staminate flowers. The effect was in either case specific, that is, limited to flower development. It is concluded thatexogenous and endogenous gibberellins affect not only the initiation, but also the further development, of flowers in the cucumber. 相似文献

Prestoea schultzeana is a monoecious, protandrous palm in the forest understory of Amazonian Ecuador. We studied its leaf production, population density, sexual expression, phenology, pollination, and the specificity of the floral visitors. On average, 1.4 leaves and 0.9 inflorescences are produced per individual per year. The number of staminate flowers per inflorescence is relatively constant compared with the number of pistillate flowers which varies greatly. Flowering occurs in staminate and pistillate phases of approximately 19 and 0–7 days duration, respectively. Flowers open in the morning, and staminate flowers abscise in the afternoon of the same day whereas pistillate flowers last for two days. Flowers are whitish-yellow with a sweet odor and produce nectar. They were visited by Coleoptera (Chrysomelidae, Curculionidae, Nitidulidae, Ptiliidae, Staphylinidae), Hemiptera, Diptera (Drosophilidae, Syrphidae, Ceratopogonidae), Lepidoptera (Nymphalidae), and Hymenoptera (Formicidae, Halictidae). All examined individuals of the syrphid fly Copestylum sp. visiting pistillate flowers carried 100–500 grains of P. schultzeana pollen. Pollen occurred on all body parts, but especially on the legs, and this makes Copestylum sp. the most important pollinator. Most floral visitors were also frequent on the flowers of co-occurring plant species; notably the palm Hyospathe elegans shared most visitor species with P. schultzeana. 相似文献

Sex differential nectar production, floral longevity and pollinator foraging were examined in Lobelia cardinalis, a self-compatible, protandrous species that is hummingbird pollinated. The staminate phase of the flowers lasts significantly longer and produces significantly more nectar (total sugar) per day than the pistillate phase of the flowers. Additional pollen is presented throughout the staminate phase. Because inflorescences of L. cardinalis mature acropetally, the nectar reward on any given day is greatest at the top of the inflorescence (where staminate phase flowers are located). Hummingbirds appear to be sensitive to this pattern of nectar presentation as they most commonly began foraging in the middle of an inflorescence and proceeded upward. This foraging pattern tends to promote outcrossing and suggests that staminate phase flowers are visited more often than pistillate phase flowers. We conclude that L. cardinalis emphasizes the male function at anthesis. Others have hypothesized that the features of this species are a logical consequence of intrasexual selection, but further research is needed before we place great confidence in a sexual selection interpretation of our data. 相似文献

Growth regulators participate in the differentiation of floral parts, determining the developmental path of the respective
type of inflorescence. The effect depends on the expression of the peculiarities of floral part differentiation, the recognition
of the character of endogenous substances in certain stages and the choice of the suitable regulator for application. In the
primitive flower ofPapaver petals and stamens are formed from the peripheral meristem with a lower content of auxins and a higher level of gibberellic
substances. The pistil arises later from central tissues with a higher level of auxins and inhibitory substances. The stamens
are more sensitive to the higher level of auxin substances, and by a suitable application of GA3 and BAP they can be transformed into petals; in this way double flower forms arise. In the differentiation of floral parts
ofCampanula, Rosa andMelandrium similar regularities assert themselves in time successions, but in another spatial arrangement. Sex differentiation of diclinous
flowers ofMelandrium is based on differences in heterochromosomes XY and XX. The rise of the zygomorphic flower ofVeronica is accompanied by a different distribution of endogenous substances which affect the development of petals, stamens and the
pistil.
The differentiation of flowers in the racemose inflorescence occurs in the acropetal succession, and lateral primordia inCampanula develop into actinomorphic regular flowers, whereas inDigitalis they are zygomorphic and only the terminal flower is peloric. In the initial phases the staminate tassel and the pistillate
ear in maize are identical. Earlier differentiation of the terminal pistillate tassel is connected with a higher level of
gibberellins and the later development of the lateral pistillate ear is accompanied by the increase in auxin-like substances
and inhibitions. Similar correlations were found in the development of staminate catkins and the differentiation of pistillate
flowers in terminal buds ofJuglans regia. By the application of auxin-like substances it is possible to achieve the transformation of primordia of the staminate tassel
into the pistillate ear in maize or to regulate the number of staminate catkins and pistillate flowers on twigs of the walnut
tree. In the capitulum of the sunflower differences arise between peripheral pistillate ray flowers and hermaphrodite tubular
ones. By applying GA3 and BAP the number of ray flowers is increased. If the normal course of inflorescence differentiation is affected with a
suitable type of regulator, a range of floral abnormalities appears which permit to assess the intervention in different developmental
stages and the reaction of the primordium to the applied type of regulator. Abnormalities also suggest some phylogenetic correlations. 相似文献

Jatropha curcas L. is a commercially important plant with biodiesel and medicinal potential. It is a monoecious plant with staminate and
pistillate flowers in same inflorescence with number of staminate flowers being higher than pistillate ones resulting in very
low fruit yield. Altering sex ratio to increase the number of female flowers would lead to better yield. Phytohormones are
most important factors known to alter sex ratio in plants. The mechanism by which phytohormones alter sex ratio differs in
different plant species. Among phytohormones, GA plays an important role in sex alteration. In this study, we report the effect
of exogenous application of GA on sex modification in J. curcas. There was considerable increase in number of female flowers by application of GA. At lower concentrations (10 and 100 ppm),
increase in number of female flowers and fruit yield was proportionate to the concentration of hormone used but at higher
concentration (1,000 ppm) though there was an increase in number of female flowers, fruit yield decreased. This was due to
an increased peduncle length and enhanced cell death as a consequence of endogenous release of hydrogen peroxide in response
to increased GA, resulting in withering of fruits. 相似文献

Nanocnide zhejiangensis X.F. Jin & Y.F. Lu, a new species of Urticaceae from Zhejiang, east China, is described with illustrations. The new species is morphologically similar to Nanocnide japonica in having staminate inflorescence longer than leaves, but differs by having glabrous stems, petioles, peduncles and abaxial leaf surfaces, glabrous perianth lobes of staminate flowers, dorsally glabrous perianth lobes of pistillate flowers, and acuminate or solitary spinose–setaceous at the apex. Analysis based on ITS, atpF–H, atpB–rbcL and trnL–F sequences also demonstrate that Nanocnide japonica is the closest extant relative to the new species. 相似文献

The early stages of development of the inflorescence of Philodendronmelinonii were examined using scanning electron microscopy.Pistillate flowers are initiated on the lower portion of theinflorescence and staminate flowers are initiated on the distalportion. The male flowers have four to five stamens. The femaleflowers have a multilocular ovary consisting of four to sixlocules. A transition zone consisting of sterile male flowersand bisexual flowers with fused or free carpels and staminodesis also present on the inflorescences. This zone is locatedbetween the male and female flower zones. Generally, the portionof the bisexual flower facing the male zone forms stamens, andthe portion facing the female zone develops an incomplete gynoeciumwith few carpels. In P. melinonii, the incomplete separationof staminodes from the gynoecial portion of the whorl showsthat the staminodes and carpels belong to the same whorl. Thebisexual flowers of P. melinonii are believed to be a case ofhomeosis where carpels have been replaced by sterile stamenson the same whorl. At the level of the inflorescence, pistillateand staminate flowers are inserted on the same contact parastichiesalong the inflorescence; there is no discontinuity between thefemale zone, the bisexual zone, and the male zone. The presenceof bisexual flowers is believed to correspond to a morphogeneticgradient at the level of the inflorescence as a whole. The developmental floral morphology of Montrichardia arborescens (Araceae) revisited 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The spadix of Montrichardia arborescens contains unisexual flowers without a perianth. The pistillate flowers are located in the basal portion of the inflorescence, and the staminate flowers are located in the apical portion. There is a narrow :zone between male flowers and female flowers consisting of atypical flowers. The portion of the atypical flowers facing the staminate zone exhibits staminate characters (stamens), and the portion facing the pistillate zone has an aborted gynoecium. The floral development of Montrichurdia is compared with that of Philodendron and a new interpretation of the morphology of atypical flowers of Montrichardia is proposed. Ontogenetic evidence supports relationships with Philodendron rather than Cercestis. 2001 The Linnean Society of London 相似文献

The number of flowers in the first inflorescence of tomato plantswas increased by low temperatures and reduced by the applicationof GA3. The effect of GA3, was greater in a low temperatureregime (12 °C minimum) than at normal temperatures (16 °Cminimum). Increases in flower number could be produced by theremoval of young developing leaves but the treatment was nolonger effective if plants wen grown at low temperatures orwere treated with GA3. Young developing leaves were shown to be sources of diffusiblegibberellin-like substances. Leaves from plants grown in a normaltemperature regime yielded greater amounts of gibberellin-likesubstances than leaves from plants grown in the low temperatureregime. It is suggested that high levels of endogenous gibberellinsact to reduce the number of flowers formed in the first inflorescence, and that leaf removal and low temperatures influence flowernumbers by lowering levels of diffusible gibberellins in theplants.
