An assemblage of 17 identified and four unknown pollen and sporetypes is reported from the Pliocene Rio Banano Formation of southeasternCosta Rica. The most abundant are monolete fern spores, Palmae, cf.Antrophyum, Symphonia, Pelliceria,Lacmella (previously unreported in the fossil record),Alchornea, and Sabicea. These arrange into twopaleocommunities-mangroves and lowland tropical rain forest. Annual precipitation is estimated at near the present ~3500 mm, butless seasonal, and the MAT (mean annual temperature) at ~27°C. No pollen taxa representing distinctly arid or high-altitude vegetationwas being blown or washed into the coastal depositional basin, and nopollen grains were recovered of northern temperate elements that arepresent in Neogene floras to the north in Guatemala and southeasternMexico. These data are consistent with those from 12 other Miocene andPliocene palynofloras from northern Latin America, indicating the lateappearance of dry habitats and moderate paleoelevations and aprogressive southward introduction of northern temperate elements withlate Cenozoic cooling.  相似文献

We present the results of an intensive sampling program carried out from 2000 to 2007 along both coasts of Costa Rica, Central America. The presence of 44 species of benthic marine algae is reported for the first time for Costa Rica. Most of the new records are Rhodophyta (27 spp.), followed by Chlorophyta (15 spp.), and Heterokontophyta, Phaeophycea (2 spp.). Overall, the currently known marine flora of Costa Rica is comprised of 446 benthic marine algae and 24 Cyanobacteria. This species number is an under estimation, and will increase when species of benthic marine algae from taxonomic groups where only limited information is available (e.g., microfilamentous benthic marine algae, Cyanobacteria) are included. The Caribbean coast harbors considerably more benthic marine algae (318 spp.) than the Pacific coast (190 spp.); such a trend has been observed in all neighboring countries. Compared to other Central American countries, Costa Rica has the highest number of reported benthic marine algae; however, Panama may have a similarly high diversity after unpublished results from a Rhodophyta survey (Wysor, unpublished) are included. Sixty-two species have been found along both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts of Costa Rica; we discuss this result in relation to the emergence of the Central American Isthmus.  相似文献

The diffusion of innovations model has been used by social scientists for decades to understand the adoption of new agricultural technologies, but its applicability to environmental as opposed to commercial technologies has been the source of much debate. The “classic” model's ability to account for the diffusion of environmental innovations is hampered by its social–psychological roots and voluntarist assumptions. A model more appropriate to the adoption of environmental technologies in a developing country setting should take into account institutional factors, including the mode of interaction between farmers and extension agencies. This paper examines patterns of adoption of a set of environmental farm technologies in the humid tropics of Costa Rica, paying particular attention to the role of a local agricultural engineering university's outreach activities. Our findings indicate that overall patterns of adoption remain low; that farm size is the only structural variable significantly related to adoption; and that of the various extension activities analyzed, farmer attendance at a university meeting or workshop is by far the strongest predictor.  相似文献

Examination of the lectotype (here designated) reveals that Hagnagora anicata (Felder & Rogenhofer) does not occur in Costa Rica. Instead two new species are described, Hagnagora eliannesp. n. and Hagnagora unniasp. n., and their distribution is discussed. The previous treatment of Hagnagora anicata as a single widespread species ranging from Jamaica and Mexico to Bolivia needs to be critically evaluated.  相似文献

Traditional explanations of extensive land use on large unproductive estates in Latin American have failed to understand important aspects of the economic and political logic behind such enterprises. This article examines the reasons for the low productivity of cattle ranches over a period which spans the consolidation of haciendas in a frontier zone and their subsequent integration into the international beef market. The persistence of extensive land use in a modern export economy is explained as resulting from characteristics of the world beef market, local ecology, the Costa Rican credit and tax systems, and the social composition and political power of the landowning class.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.   Many parrot populations are threatened with extinction due to habitat loss and collection for the pet trade. The loss of nest trees and chick poaching can drastically reduce reproductive success. However, due to the long life span of many parrots, populations are unlikely to become extinct rapidly even with complete reproductive failure. For parrots that travel in family groups, rapid estimates of reproductive success can be obtained by recording group sizes in areas where they congregate. We used roost counts over an 18-month period to estimate the size and productivity of a population of Yellow-naped Parrots ( Amazona auropalliata auropalliata ) in Costa Rica. Up to 300 birds were observed flying to roost on offshore islands near Curú National Wildlife Refuge. Roost counts were lowest during the breeding period (December–March), increased after fledging (April–July), and peaked during the late wet season (September–October). Increased food availability on the islands during the breeding season allowed the parrots to become seasonal island residents, and lowered roost counts during that period. We calculated reproductive parameters by assuming that groups of >2 birds were adults traveling with young. The percentage of young in the population was 12.5% and did not differ between years. Studies of group size in birds that form stable family groups, such as psittacines in the genera Amazona and Ara , are an inexpensive way to obtain estimates of the reproductive output of some parrot populations and determine if further study or intensive management are warranted.  相似文献

Trawl samples of demersal fish populations within the Gulf of Nicoya, Costa Rica were conducted during February and July, 1979 and April, 1980 in an attempt to define basic abundance, diversity and distributional patterns. Seventeen day and three night samples produced 6 441 fishes of 107 species during the February cruise. Twenty day and two night samples produced 9 220 individuals of 131 species during the July cruise. Twenty day samples produced 14 151 individuals representing 125 species taken during the April cruise. A total of 214 species were collected during this study.The Gulf may be divided into three zones on the basis of the physical characteristics of the stations (water temperature, dissolved oxygen, salinity, depth and distance from the mouth of the Gulf). Few changes in the position of these zones occurred during the study period indicating a relatively stable estuarine configuration from a biological perspective.The Gulf of Nicoya area is under the influence of a wet and a dry season. No significant seasonal changes in the number, biomass, percent occurrence, diversity of partitioning by size class of fishes were observed.Two major types of fish distributional patterns were observed. Several species were ubiquitous and were found throughout the Gulf in varying abundances. Other species were restricted to either the upper or lower Gulf. Dominant groups in the upper Gulf include the sciaenids, sea catfishes (Ariidae) and flatfishes (Soleidae, Cynoglossidae andSyacium ovale). These fishes tend to inhabit the warmer, shallower, less saline waters of the upper Gulf. Flounders (bothidae), gobies (Bollmannia spp.), morays and congers (Hildebrandia nitens, Priodonophus equatorialis andMuraenesox coniceps) and several other species dominated the deeper, cooler, more saline lower Gulf.  相似文献

Aristolochia gorgona is described from the Atlantic watershed of Costa Rica and central and eastern Panama. It is similar toA. grandiflora Sw., with which it has been confused in the past. The extensive reported synonymy ofA. grandiflora is reviewed and compared with the new entity. Some new terms are proposed for better describing floral structure in this species complex, and suggestions are made for its collection and study.Aristolochia gorgona is one of the largest-flowered plant species (in terms of perianth area) in the Neotropics.
Resumen   Aristolochia gorgona se describe de la vertiente Atlántica de Costa Rica y del centro y este de Panamá. Es similar aA. grandiflora Sw., con la cual se ha confundido en el pasado. La extensa sinonimia reportada paraA. grandiflora es revisada, y comparada con la nueva entidad. Se proponen algunos términos nuevos para describir mejor la estructura floral en éste complejo de especies, y se ofrecen sugerencias para su recolección y estudio.Aristolochia gorgona es una de las especies vegetales con flores más grandes (en cuanto al área del perianto) en el Neotrópico.

Columnea lariensis is described and illustrated as a new species from the Talamanca Mountains, Costa Rica. It is similar to C. canarina from Panama. Alloplectus weirii is here reported for the first time from Mesoamerica and an illustration is provided.

Abstract: The occurrence of cyanobacteria in the phyllosphere of several understory plants was investigated during a one and a half year study in a primary premontane rain forest in Costa Rica. Altogether, seven species of epiphyllous cyanobacteria were identified and are discussed here. The ecology of the two most frequent species in the understory, Scytonema javanicum and Sc. hofmannii , was studied in further detail. Within the Understory, the relative abundance of these species, as well as of epiphyllous bryophytes, was more influenced by air humidity than by light. The humidity, characterized as potential evaporation, also had influence on the pseudosuccession of the phyllosphere vegetation. While at moist sites bryophytes and both species of Scytonema appeared nearly simultaneously on 6–9-month-old leaves, at dryer sites Sc. javanicum , and especially Sc. hofmannii , appeared 6–9 months after bryophytes had established. On 13–15-month-old leaves bryophytes and Scytoriema were usually well established. On average, 20–30% of the leaf area of 2–5-year old leaves of Spathacanthus hoffmannii (Acan-thaceae, an abundant understory shrub) were covered by bryophytes, 2–3% by Sc. javanicum , and 0.1–0.2% by Sc. hofmannhi . An influence of phorophyte species on the occurrence and abundance of these two species of Scytonema could not be detected. However, Sc. hofmannii was more frequent on leaves with higher bryophyte cover, while Sc. javanicum was independent from bryophytes. A comparison of leaves from the understory and from the canopy showed that the composition and abundance of cyanobacteria species changed with height above forest floor.  相似文献

We observed 12 adult female mantled howlers (Alouatta palliata), which have been part of Group 2 at Hacienda La Pacifica, Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica, via focal animal sampling during portions of July and August of 1988 and 1990–1992 (7–9 females/year, 955.3 hr of observation). We used agonistic interactions and time in proximity (<1 m) as indices of social relationships. The rate of female–female agonistic interactions was 0.38/hr (yearly range: 0.24 to 0.51/hr). Yearly dominance hierarchies, based on outcomes of dyadic agonistic interactions, varied in linearity between 60.7 and 94.6%. Adult females spent 7.10% of their time in proximity to another adult female (yearly range: 1.04–15.64%) and 4.95% of their time in proximity to an adult male (yearly range: 2.27–7.51%). Using yearly dominance ranks, we tested proximity patterns for differences based on rank and presence of dependent offspring. In 3 of the 4 years, high-ranking females spent significantly greater proportions of their time in proximity with other females than did low-ranking females. Time in proximity with the 3 or 4 adult males was not associated with rank. Having a dependent infant was not related to the proportion of time in proximity to females or males, and females, especially top-ranking ones, spent more time in proximity to females with dependent infants than to females without infants. These results show that social relationships in mantled howler groups are dynamic and generally support predictions made by von Schaik (1989) regarding scramble-type, female competitors. We also discuss the roles of immigrations, infants, and male relationships in the patterning of social relationships.  相似文献

根据2009年7—8月在东热带太平洋哥斯达黎加外海(4°30’—10°24’N、91°20’—100°00’W)进行茎柔鱼探捕调查期间采集的表层浮游动物资料,对其种类组成、生物量及其分布进行了分析。结果表明,调查海域,鉴定出腔肠动物8目10科17属23种;甲壳动物8目30科43属74种;毛颚动物1目1科1属4种;尾索动物3目3科5属5种;环节动物为1目3科5属6种;软体动物1目1科3属3种;其他浮游动物有头足类的幼体、鱼卵和仔稚鱼以及浮游幼虫。调查海域总生物量和丰度的平均值分别为(124.78±176.83)mg/m3和(848±1219)个/m3,生物量较大的类群主要是甲壳动物的桡足类和毛颚动物的箭虫类其中桡足类的丰度(727个/m3)为最高,其次为箭虫类(373个/m3);出现频率较高的为桡足类、箭虫类、长尾类、头足类和鱼类仔稚鱼。  相似文献

Inventories of soil C pools are still lacking from tropical sites. Our objective was to assess total C and N concentrations in the different mineral soil fractions down to 50 cm depth in relation to selected physical and chemical properties of 5 ecosystems at La Flor Sustainable Center in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The ecosystems studied were a derived savanna with scattered trees, a gallery forest, an abandoned Mango indigofera L. plantation, a Citrus sp. plantation, and a Saccharum officinarum L. (sugarcane) plantation. Significant differences were found for the main fixed factor ecosystem for all variables analyzed (ANOVA). The TSC concentration was significantly higher in the sugarcane plantation compared to the rest of land use systems. The TSC concentration decreased significantly with increase in depth in all ecosystems and ranged from 20.3–38.3 to 4.3–20.9 g kg−1 in the 0–10 and 40–50 cm depth, respectively. In all cases, the clay + silt fraction (<50 μm) contained the highest C concentration. N concentration (0–10 cm depth) at La Flor ranged from 0.32 to 0.19%, and decreased in the order sugarcane > Curatella savanna > Mango and Citrus plantations > gallery forest. A principal component analysis (PCA) performed with all variables studied showed that the ordination of land uses (ecosystems) in the factorial plane defined by the first two axes was significant (Monte Carlo permutation test, P < 0.0001). The highest TSC pool down to 50 cm depth was obtained in the sugarcane plantation (160 Mg C ha−1) while less C was found in the rest of ecosystems, i.e. from 66 (gallery forest) to 80 Mg C ha−1 (Curatella savanna). The TSC concentration obtained in the sugarcane plot is likely the result of the incorporation of surface residues into the soil that would have otherwise been lost through burning, which is the current practice in the region. Further studies on C stabilization in the clay fraction are thus needed to test the hypothesis of soil C enrichment due to residue management. Finally, trade-offs are to be considered for both preservation of the fragile dTf and the productivity of derived land uses that increases soil C at the same time.  相似文献

Pollen records of Holocene sediment cores from the Costa Rican Cordillera de Talamanca (La Chonta bog, 2310 m and La Trinidad bog, 2700 m) show the postglacial development of the montane oak forest zone from ca. 9500 to 1500 yr BP. During the early Holocene (ca. 9500–700 yr BP), alder vegetation covered the La Chonta and La Trinidad bogs and their adjacent hills. The upper forest line is inferred to be at 2800–3000 m elevation. A Podocarpus-Quercus forest characterised the middle Holocene (ca. 7000–4500 yr BP). The upper forest line is located at >3000 m reaching the present-day altitudinal distribution. A Quercus forest characterised the late Holocene (ca. 4500–1500 yr BP). Compared to modern conditions, the early Holocene has similar average temperatures, but the moisture level was probably higher. Pollen evidence for the late Holocene indicates drier environmental conditions than today. Efforts to restore tropical forest in abandoned pasture are likely to be more successful when bird visitation is promoted because birds disperse seeds and eat herbivorous arthropods that damage leaves. Thus, it is critical to understand bird behavior in relation to different restoration strategies. We measured the likelihood of visitation, number of visits, and duration of visits for all birds and for Cherrie's Tanager ( Ramphocelus costaricensis ), a common seed disperser, in five sizes of forest restoration patches planted with four tree species in southern Costa Rica. We predicted that the largest patches, and the tree species with the greatest canopy cover, would be visited most frequently and have the longest visits because we assumed that these patch types had the greatest food resources and the lowest predation risk. We found that birds were more likely to visit large patches and the tree species with the highest canopy cover ( Inga edulis ). Birds visited Inga trees more often and stayed in Inga and Erythrina poeppigiana trees for longer periods of time than in other tree species. We found similar results for Cherrie's Tanagers. Thus, we identified two factors, tree species and patch size, which may be manipulated in restoration projects to increase bird visitation.  相似文献

The use of wood in construction has been part of mankind's history but wood placed into the environment is affected by biotic and abiotic agents and is degraded over time. Even in extreme environments, such as dry desert sites, deterioration of wood can take place. One site located in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile is the Humberstone and Santa Laura saltpeter works where offices and other structures were built of wood. Founded in 1872, the Humberstone and Santa Laura Saltpeter Works was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005 for its historic significance. Since significant deterioration in the wooden buildings has taken place, investigations were initiated to better understand the degradation underway so conservation efforts to protect the historic buildings can be developed. The objectives of this study were to identify the type of deterioration and decay taking place and to isolate and identify fungi from wood samples of structural elements at both sites. Samples of deteriorated wood showed extensive degradation that resulted in a defibration of the wood. The middle lamella between cells was degraded and remaining secondary walls separated due to high concentrations of salts. This resulted in a serious corrosion of the exterior layers of wood cells. Although high salts inhibit fungi, many different fungi were isolated. Sequencing of the ITS region of the rDNA was used and fungi were identified as Penicillium chrysogenum, Engyodontium album, Eupenicillium tropicum, Penicillium digitatum, Pseudotaeniolina globosa, Cladosporium phaenocomae, Aureobasidium pullulans, Penicillium virgatum, Coprinopsis sp. and Phanerochaete sordida. Several of these fungi appear to be halophilic.  相似文献
