The distributions of heavy metals in the Langat River were studied for a period of six months between September 1984 and February 1985. Heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium, cerium, cobalt, chromium, caesium, lanthanum, rubidium, antimony, scandium, thorium and zinc were determined in water, suspended materials and sediment samples from the Langat River by neutron activation and atomic absorption spectrometry. The concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, cerium, cobalt, scandium, antimony, and zinc were generally highest in the suspended materials, whereas the concentrations of chromium, rubidium and thorium were always highest in the sediments: Arsenic concentrations in the river were slightly higher than the natural concentration, while other elements were generally at their natural concentration levels. The use of arsenical herbicides in plantations along the river could be a source of arsenic pollution.  相似文献

Avoidance reactions of chironomid larvae to contaminated sediment taken from a heavy metal impacted lake were studied. Heavy metal levels in the test sediment ranged from background of 0.6 parts per million (ppm) cadmium, 77 ppm zinc and 17 ppm chromium to a maximum of 1,029 ppm cadmium, 17,262 ppm zinc and 2,106 ppm chromium. A linear relationship was established between cadmium and zinc levels in the sediment and avoidance by chironomids.An approximate threshold avoidance of metals in the sediment was determined to be between 213–422 ppm cadmium, 4385–8330 ppm zinc and 799–1513 ppm chromium.Supported by NIH Training Grant Number 5T01-ES00071 from National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and in part by an NSF (RANN) Grant Number GI-35106.Purdue University Agricultural Experiment Station, Jour. Chironomid larvae were maintained for 17 days in sediments with various heavy metal levels. The control sediment had levels of 0.6 ppm cadmium, 17 ppm chromium and 77 ppm zinc. The most contaminated sediment had levels of 1030 ppm cadmium, 1640 ppm chromium, and 17300 ppm zinc.The mean length and weight of the larvae from the control sediment were 1.83 cm and 2.86 mg. The mean length and weight of larvae from the most contaminated sediment were 0.82 cm and 0.20 mg. A linear relationship was found for the square root of length versus metal levels in the sediment.  相似文献

Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX), an age-related disorder of the eye, is associated with significant ophthalmic morbidity and can lead to pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PEG). The etiology of this disorder has not been clearly understood. Trace elements have been suggested to have roles in the pathogenesis of several disorders. This study aimed to determine whether trace element levels have a role in the development of PEX and/or PEG. Levels of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), selenium (Se), manganese (Mn), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), molybdenum (Mo), nickel (Ni), vanadium (V), arsenic (As), aluminum (Al), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), and strontium (Sr) were determined in serum samples of 32 cases of PEX, 30 cases of PEG, and 32 control subjects using inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry. Mn, Mo, and Hg concentrations were found to be significantly increased in patients with PEX. Logistic regression revealed Mn and Hg as the strongest determinants of PEX and Mo as the strongest determinant of PEG in the studied Turkish subjects. Levels of Mn, Cr, Co, Mo, Al, Hg, Sr, Ni, V, and As were determined for the first time in these ophthalmological disorders. Increased levels of serum Mn, Mo, and Hg suggest a possible role of these elements in the pathobiology of PEX.  相似文献

Human serum alpha-2-macroglobulin has been found to be a major cadmium-binding protein in vitro. Serum and alpha-2-macroglobulin equilibrated with cadmium at the 0.20 ppm level were chromatographed over Sephadex and agarose gels to separate and estimate the molecular weights of the proteins. Alpha-2-macroglobulin was found to fragment into reproducible fragments when chromatographed on agarose gels showing different metal-binding fractions for cadmium and endogenous zinc. The distribution of cadmium on serum protein chromatograms was correlated with alpha-2-macroglobulin chromatograms. Cadmium was bound to fractions with molecular weights as high as 800,000 daltons with an affinity greater than that observed for serum albumin.  相似文献

Previous studies demonstrated that the age-corrected breast cancer mortalities in different countries are inversely correlated with the per-capita dietary intakes of selenium and directly with the estimated intakes of cadmium, zinc, and chromium, suggesting that the anticarcinogenic properties of selenium are counteracted by these elements. The tumor-preventative effects of selenium and the converse effects zinc and chromium have already been confirmed experimentally in studies with female inbred C3H mice carrying murine mammary tumor virus (MMTV). Using the same model of human breast cancer, it is now demonstrated that cadmium abolishes the cancer-protecting effects of selenium. In addition, cadmium was also found to interact with zinc, copper, and chromium. At 1.4 ppm in the drinking water, cadmium caused a significant depletion of zinc in vital organs such as the liver, which is held responsible for a delay of the appearance of the mammary tumors by 4 months and their slower growth rates relative to the Cd-unexposed controls. The results of the present study are relevant to human breast cancer prevention as selenium counteracts the effects of cadmium.  相似文献

Nitrogen-fixation by two species of Nostoc, one of them a lichen phycobiont, was generally stimulated by low concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, nickel, lead, palladium, and zinc. Higher concentrations (0.025 to 0.125 ppm) of arsenic, nickel, and palladium were also stimulatory; however, higher concentrations of cadmium, lead, and zinc tended to inhibit fixation. With the exception of palladium and zinc at low concentrations these six tested elements tended to inhibit nitrogen-fixation in Chlorogloea fritschii and Westiellopsis sp.  相似文献

The distribution of silver, arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, nickel, lead, selenium and zinc binding to species with different molecular weight in aqueous extract of krill was studied by on-line size-exclusion chromatography (SEC)/inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The extract was fractionated in three fractions with different molecular weight (MW) ranges (>20,000 relative molecular mass (rel. mol. mass), 2000-20,000 rel. mol. mass and <2000 rel. mol. mass), which were further analyzed by SEC with columns having different optimum fractionation ranges in order to obtain more detailed information about the MW distribution of the elements. Various distribution profiles for the target elements among different MW ranges were observed. The results obtained indicated that manganese, zinc, silver, cadmium and lead species were mostly distributed in the higher MW range (>20,000 rel. mol. mass). In the case of chromium, iron, cobalt, arsenic and selenium, most of them bind to species with lower MW (<2000 rel. mol. mass). Only copper and nickel species was predominantly present in middle MW range (2000-20,000 rel. mol. mass). Further speciation of arsenic compounds in the small MW fraction was carried out with anion exchange chromatography (AEC) coupled with ICP-MS. The results showed that the dominant arsenic species in this fraction is As(III) (63% of extractable arsenic), while As(V) (13%) and two unknown arsenic species (19% and 5%, respectively) are present in lower amounts.  相似文献

Effects of zinc, copper, and selenium on placental cadmium transport   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the potential effects of zinc, copper, and selenium on placental cadmium transport. From November 2002 through January 2003, a total of 47 healthy pregnant women from Da-Ye City, Hubei Province in Central China participated in the study. Their age, parity, gestational age, pregnancy history, and lifestyle data were obtained by questionnaire interview. The placental, whole-blood, and cord blood levels of cadmium were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS), whole-blood zinc was measured by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (F-AAS), whole-blood copper by ICP-MS, and selenium was by atomic fluorescence spectrophotometry (AFS). The cord blood cadmium concentration (0.020-1.48 microg/L) was significantly lower than in maternal blood (0.80-25.20 microg/L, p<0.01). The placental cadmium concentration was from 0.082 to 3.97 microg/g dry weight. Multiple linear regression analysis indicated that lower levels of maternal blood copper were significantly associated with higher cadmium concentrations in cord blood. Placental cadmium in women with lower levels of maternal blood zinc was significantly higher than in those with normal zinc levels. The placental cadmium level in women with lower whole-blood selenium was significantly lower than in subjects with normal selenium levels. It was concluded that the essential elements copper, selenium, and zinc might significantly affect placental cadmium transport.  相似文献

In Lahontan Valley, Nevada, arsenic, cobalt, tungsten, uranium, radon, and polonium-210 are carcinogens that occur naturally in sediments and groundwater. Arsenic and cobalt are principally derived from erosion of volcanic rocks in the local mountains and tungsten and uranium are derived from erosion of granitic rocks in headwater reaches of the Carson River. Radon and 210Po originate from radioactive decay of uranium in the sediments. Arsenic, aluminum, cobalt, iron, and manganese concentrations in household dust suggest it is derived from the local soils. Excess zinc and chromium in the dust are probably derived from the vacuum cleaner used to collect the dust, or household sources such as the furnace. Some samples have more than 5 times more cobalt in the dust than in the local soil, but whether the source of the excess cobalt is anthropogenic or natural cannot be determined with the available data. Cobalt concentrations are low in groundwater, but arsenic, uranium, radon, and 210Po concentrations often exceed human-health standards, and sometime greatly exceed them. Exposure to radon and its decay products in drinking water can vary significantly depending on when during the day that the water is consumed. Although the data suggests there have been no long term changes in groundwater chemistry that corresponds to the Lahontan Valley leukemia cluster, the occurrence of the very unusual leukemia cluster in an area with numerous 210Po and arsenic contaminated wells is striking, particularly in conjunction with the exceptionally high levels of urinary tungsten in Lahontan Valley residents. Additional research is needed on potential exposure pathways involving food or inhalation, and on synergistic effects of mixtures of these natural contaminants on susceptibility to development of leukemia.  相似文献

The bioaccessibility of arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, nickel, and zinc in four National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) standard reference materials and two Canadian dust samples as determined using the Solubility/Bioavailability Research Consortium (SBRC) in vitro procedure ranged from a low of 1.8% for chromium in standard reference material NIST 2711 to a high of 95.2% for cadmium in NIST 2584. The SBRC data were compared to data generated using a modified EN-71 Toy Safety protocol conducted at two different laboratories. Results for the two extraction methods compared well with differences between the means (SBRC vs. modified EN-71) generally less than 10% for the majority of the metals. These differences between the two extraction methods were negligible compared to variability caused by (a) the inherent heterogeneity of typical house dust samples and (b) differences in ICP-MS analytical approaches employed in the different laboratories. Results indicate that the modified EN-71 method is useful and appropriate as a relatively simple, rapid, and reproducible screening test for estimating metals’ bioaccessibility in soil and dust samples.  相似文献

Trace element disturbance is often observed in hemodialysis patients. While trace element concentrations have been reported in blood samples from hemodialysis patients, they have not been well investigated in scalp hair. In the present study, 22 trace elemental concentrations were measured by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry in the scalp hair of 80 male hemodialysis patients and compared with those of 100 healthy male subjects. In hemodialysis patients, the concentrations of beryllium, arsenic, magnesium, chromium, manganese, iron, selenium, molybdenum, iodine, vanadium, and cobalt were significantly higher than those in healthy subjects, while lead, mercury, copper, germanium, and bromine were significantly lower than those in the former group. No significant differences were observed for lithium, aluminum, cadmium, zinc, boron, or nickel. There were significant positive correlations between the duration of hemodialysis and the magnesium and manganese concentrations. There was a significant negative correlation between cadmium concentration and the duration of hemodialysis. There were significant positive correlations between dialysis efficacy (Kt/V) and magnesium, manganese, zinc, and selenium concentrations. In conclusion, trace element concentrations of the scalp hair are different between hemodialysis patients and healthy subjects. Essential trace elements, such as magnesium, manganese, zinc, and selenium, may be affected by the duration of hemodialysis and Kt/V.  相似文献

Samples of tail muscle from 32 American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) in Florida were analyzed for contaminant concentrations to provide preliminary information on the potential public health hazard of meat consumption. Detectable levels were found for eight metals; copper, zinc, iron, chromium, mercury, lead, cadmium and arsenic. Mean residue was highest for mercury (geometric mean = 0.61 ppm). DDE, DDD, DDT, dieldrin, heptachlor epoxide, lindane, and PCB's were found. Mean residue concentrations were compared by lake. Alligators appeared to be suitable monitors of environmental pollution. Concentrations of contaminants found in these animals probably pose little threat to public health. However, recommendations must await analysis of larger sample sizes and information on amount and frequency of meat consumption. Alligators killed for human consumption should continue to be monitored for contaminant residues.  相似文献

To detect the content of 12 heavy metals in blood and hair sample from a general population of Pearl River Delta area, and to analyze the influence of duration of residence, gender, age, smoking and drinking on the heavy metal content. Use inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to detect the content of 12 heavy metals lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), aluminum (Al), arsenic (As), copper (Cu), chrome (Cr), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn), tin (Sn) and antimony (Sb) in blood and hair samples of a total of 50 subjects from a general population, collected by multistage stratified cluster random sampling method. The geometric mean of heavy metal content in blood samples of general population (μg/L): blood aluminum 214.00; blood chrome 92.82; blood manganese 21.43; blood nickel 20.59; blood copper 0.67; blood zinc 11.50; blood arsenic 0.55; blood cadmium 2.45; blood tin 0.00; blood antimony 1.92; blood lead 158.84; and blood mercury 1.19. The geometric mean of heavy metal content in hair samples of general population (μg/g): hair aluminum is 84.65; hair chrome 0.00; hair manganese 2.44; hair nickel 0.61; hair copper 28.49; hair zinc 136.65; hair arsenic 0.75; hair cadmium 0.46; hair tin 1.04; hair antimony 0.05; hair lead 8.97; and hair mercury 0.69. Some heavy metals were correlated with duration of residence, gender, age, smoking and drinking. This was the first time that simultaneously detecting heavy metal content in blood and hair was used to analyze the internal heavy metal burden in resident population of Pearl River Delta area. These data can serve as reference for further research.  相似文献

This experiment tested the effects of heavy metal contaminated sediment on emergence of chironomids. The number of adults emerging from test chambers containing an uncontaminated sediment and ones with sediment containing 1030 ppm cadmium (Cd), 17,300 ppm zinc (Zn), and 1640 ppm chromium (Cr) were observed for 14 days. It was found that emergence was reduced by over three times and delayed for two days in the heavy metal contaminated sediment.  相似文献

Since 1991, the skin bank of the Queen Astrid Military Hospital uses food-grade aluminum foil as a primary support for storing cryo preserved human donor skin (511 donors). The possible release of heavy metals into the cryo preservation media (30% (v/v) glycerol in physiological water) and the possible impact this release could have on the quality of the cryo preserved donor skin was evaluated. Aluminum was the principal detection target. Possible contaminants of the aluminum foil as such (arsenic, cadmium, chromium and lead) were also investigated. The evaluation was set up after a Belgian Competent Authority inspection remark. Aluminum was detected at a concentration of 1.4 mg/l, arsenic and lead were not detected, while cadmium and chromium were detected in trace element quantities. An histological analysis revealed no differences between cryo preserved and fresh donor skin. No adverse reactions in patients, related to the presence of aluminum or heavy metal traces, were reported since the introduction of the cryo preserved donor skin in our burn wound centre.  相似文献

Context: Complementary alternative medicine therapies based on the use of cesium chloride preparations for the treatment of cancer and radiation poisoning, have generated therapeutic interest; but oral or intravenous administration of cesium chloride (CsCl) to cancer patients as an alternative mode of cancer therapy have not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Objective: Cesium (Cs) levels from human tissue were measured to determine exposure to an alternative medical treatment. Cesium levels are reported from two patients who were administered cesium chloride in conjunction with aloe vera as part of an alternative cancer treatment. Design: The samples were analyzed by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry with Zeeman background correction. As a reference, Cs was also determined in brain, liver, kidney, and whole blood from control case materials retrieved from the National Tissue Repository of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. Results: High levels of cesium were found in brain, liver, kidney, bile, gastric content, and whole blood collected at autopsy as compared to reference levels. The administration of cesium chloride resulted in blood levels a factor of 1100 higher than normal. The highest Cs concentrations were found in the liver (1029 μg/g, dry wt), followed by the kidney (815 μg/g, dry wt) and brain (219 μg/g, dry wt). Conclusion: The high accumulation in the liver suggests that hepatotoxicity from Cs might be an initial presenting symptom in Cs-poisoning cases. This is the first report describing two cases with high Cs levels in human tissues. Plasmid-determined resistances to compounds of such toxic elements as antimony, arsenic, bismuth, boron, cadmium, chromium, copper, mercury, lead, nickel, silver, tellurium and zinc occur at high frequencies in natural populations of common bacteria. Considerable study has been made of the resistances to cadmium and to arsenic which result from altered transport and of resistance to mercury which results from biotransformation. However, much remains to be learned about all of these resistances which have potential for use in engineering microbes for applications in biotechnology.  相似文献

Lead and zinc poisoning have been recorded in a variety of bird species, including migrating waterfowl such as Canada Geese (Branta canadensis), at sites contaminated with mine waste from lead and zinc mines in the Tri-State Mining District, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri, USA. The adverse health impacts from mine waste on these birds may, however, be more extensive than is apparent from incidental reports of clinical disease. To characterize health impacts from mine waste on Canada Geese that do not have observable signs of poisoning, four to eight apparently healthy birds per site were collected from four contaminated sites and an uncontaminated reference site, and examined for physical and physiologic evidence of metals poisoning. Tissue concentrations of silver, aluminum, arsenic, barium, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, lead, selenium, thallium, vanadium, and zinc were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy. Adverse health effects due to lead were characterized by assessing blood δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) enzyme activity. Adverse effects associated with zinc poisoning were determined from histologic examination of pancreas tissues. Elevated tissue lead concentrations and inhibited blood ALAD enzyme activities were consistently found in birds at all contaminated sites. Histopathologic signs of zinc poisoning, including fibrosis and vacuolization, were associated with elevated pancreatic zinc concentrations at one of the study sites. Adverse health effects associated with other analyzed elements, or tissue concentrations indicating potentially toxic exposure levels to these elements, were not observed.  相似文献

【背景】大肠杆菌拓扑异构酶Ⅰ(Escherichia coli topoisomerase I,E.coli TopA)在DNA复制、转录、重组和基因表达调控等过程发挥关键作用。研究表明E.coli TopA只有结合锌离子才具有活性,然而E.coli TopA能否结合其他金属离子尤其是重金属离子,以及结合其他金属后是否具有活性,目前仍不清楚。【目的】探究大肠杆菌拓扑异构酶Ⅰ是否结合环境中常见重金属离子,研究重金属离子结合E.coli TopA蛋白后对其活性的影响。【方法】在分别添加有锌、钴、镍、镉、铁、汞、砷、铬、铅、铜离子的M9基础培养中表达、纯化出E.coli TopA蛋白,并对纯化得到的蛋白用电感耦合等离子体质谱仪进行相应金属离子含量的测定;利用表达E.coli TopA锌指结构的突变体蛋白鉴定重金属离子的结合位点;通过体外超螺旋DNA松弛实验测定不同金属结合E.coli TopA的拓扑异构酶活性;通过测定蛋白内源性荧光推测不同金属结合E.coli TopA的空间构象差异。【结果】E.coli TopA在体内除了能结合锌和铁之外,还能够结合钴、镍、镉3种离子,但是不能结合汞、砷、铬、铅、铜离子。钴、镍、镉结合形式的E.coli TopA,每个蛋白分子最多可以结合3个相应的金属离子,他们与TopA蛋白的结合位点也是位于3个锌指结构域,而且每个锌指结构域结合1个金属离子。此外,E.coli TopA结合钴、镍、镉离子后,其DNA拓扑异构酶活性并未受到影响,可能是由于钴、镍、镉离子结合形式的E.coli TopA蛋白,其空间构象与锌结合形式相比并未发生显著变化。【结论】由于DNA拓扑异构酶在维持细胞正常生理功能中发挥关键作用,研究表明E.coli TopA的功能不会受到常见重金属的干扰(不结合或者结合后活性无影响),这也有可能是大肠杆菌在进化过程中产生的对抗环境中重金属离子毒害作用的一种自我保护和耐受机制,具有重要的生理意义。  相似文献
