The ability of nine ale and nine lager brewing strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae to produce volatile sulphur compounds during fermentation of brewers' wort was studied. In general, lager strains produced higher levels of hydrogen sulphide, methanethiol and methyl thioacetate than did ale strains. Methanethiol was shown to be a precursor of methyl thioacetate in both ale and lager strains. 相似文献

Lactobacillus buchneri ST2A vigorously decarboxylates histidine to the biogenic amine histamine, which is excreted into the medium. Cells grown in the presence of histidine generate both a transmembrane pH gradient, inside alkaline, and an electrical potential (delta psi), inside negative, upon addition of histidine. Studies of the mechanism of histidine uptake and histamine excretion in membrane vesicles and proteoliposomes devoid of cytosolic histidine decarboxylase activity demonstrate that histidine uptake, histamine efflux, and histidine/histamine exchange are electrogenic processes. Histidine/histamine exchange is much faster than the unidirectional fluxes of these substrates, is inhibited by an inside-negative delta psi and is stimulated by an inside positive delta psi. These data suggest that the generation of metabolic energy from histidine decarboxylation results from an electrogenic histidine/histamine exchange and indirect proton extrusion due to the combined action of the decarboxylase and carrier-mediated exchange. The abundance of amino acid decarboxylation reactions among bacteria suggests that this mechanism of metabolic energy generation and/or pH regulation is widespread. 相似文献

The development of ideas and methods in the quantitative study of the patterns of growth, maturation and longevity in fish is reviewed. Earlier studies on length and age at maturity, von Bertalanffy growth formula parameters, natural mortality and maximum age for clupeiformes, pleuronectiformes, gadiformes and Sebastes spp. are up-dated and extended. The concept of the Growth-Maturity-Longevity (GML) plot is developed and applied. GML plots for the gadiformes and pleuronectiformes occupy the same two-dimensional space, but those for clupeiformes and Sebastes are located differently from them and from each other. The GML parameter suite for long-lived Sebastes spp. is similar to that of certain higher vertebrates of comparable longevity (minke whale and African elephant). It is suggested that the conventional distinction between the growth of fish being indeterminate and that for higher vertebrates determinate is inappropriate; the main difference is whether the approach to the characteristic maximum size is asymptotic , as in fish and some higher vertebrates, or abrupt as in others, including man. 相似文献

A preliminary examination for the purification and characterization of 5'-nucleotidase of fish muscle was carried out and the following results were obtained. 1. The activities of 5'-nucleotidase in the muscles of marine vertebrates and invertebrates (total 11 species) were determined. The highest activity of 5'-nucleotidase was found in Blackrock fish Sebastes inermis, which was then used as a material for estimation of subcellular distribution and solubilization of the enzyme. 2. The 5'-nucleotidase of ordinary muscle of the fish Sebastes inermis was found in nuclear, microsomal and cytosolic fractions. About half of the total activity was found in the nuclear fraction, whereas the highest specific activity was observed in the microsomal fraction. 3. Complete solubilization of the enzyme was attained by using a high concentration of detergent such as Triton X-100, CHAPS, octylglucoside, octylthioglucoside and sodium deoxycholate, suggesting that the enzyme was tightly bound to the membrane. 4. Based on the results of solubility and stability tests, Triton X-100 seemed suitable for solubilizing 5'-nucleotidase from the membrane. 5. Microsomal 5'-nucleotidase was an Mg(2+)-activated enzyme, and no inactivation was observed up to 50 mM of Mg2+. 相似文献

The micropyles and their surrounding structures of pelagic fish eggs of nine species were examined and compared using a scanning
electron microscope (SEM). The surface of the egg membrane possesses uniformly distributed pores. However,Lateolabrax japonicus possesses a number of small knobs. The region of the micropyle of fish eggs examined is characterized by a circular elevation
in which the pores are larger than those on the other parts of the egg membrane. In contrast,Kareius bicoloratus egg has no elevation and possesses uniform pores to the edge of the micropylar canal. The funnel-like structure is seen in

Abstract— Microassays are described for histamine, histidine, and the activities of the enzymes histidine decarboxylase (EC 4.1.1.22) and histamine niethyltransferase (EC 2.1.1.8) in brain tissue. The enzymic-isotopic microassay for histamine is based on the methylation of tissue histamine by added histamine methyl-transferase and [14C]- or [3H]-labelled S-adenosyl-l -methionine. In a double-isotopic form of the assay, a tracer of [3H]histamine is employed along with [14C]S-adenosyl-l -methionine, and the ratio [14C]:[3H] reflects the amount of histamine in the sample. Because the methylation of histamine is uniform in brain samples studied, a single isotopic assay with [3H]S-adenosyl-l -methionine as the methyl donor is possible and increases sensitivity, so that 10 pg of tissue histamine can be estimated reliably. The assay for histidine involves decarboxylation of histidine by a bacterial histidine decarboxylase and measurement of the histamine formed by the enzymicisotopic procedure. In the histidine decarboxylase assay, histamine synthesized from added histidine is measured. The assay for histamine methyltransferase involves measuring the formation of [14C]methylhistamine with [14C]S-adenosyl-l -methionine serving as the methyl donor. 相似文献

favour the evolution of migration. These analyses predict that migratory species will be relatively large, mature late and

The formation of long-term pair bonds in marine fish has elicited much empirical study. However, the evolutionary mechanisms involved remain contested and previous theoretical frameworks developed to explain monogamy in birds and mammals are not applicable to many cases of monogamy in marine fish. In this review, we summarise all reported occurrences of social monogamy in marine fish, which has so far been observed in 18 fish families. We test quantitatively the role of ecological and behavioural traits previously suggested to be important for the evolution of monogamy and show that monogamous species occur primarily in the tropics and are associated with coral reef environments in which territory defence and site attachment is facilitated. However, there is little evidence that obligately monogamous species are smaller in body size than species that can adopt a polygynous mating system. We review the evidence pertaining to six hypotheses suggested for the evolution of monogamous pair bonds: (1) biparental care, (2) habitat limitation, (3) low population density/low mate availability/low mobility, (4) increased reproductive efficiency, (5) territory defence, and (6) net benefit of single mate sequestration. We outline predictions and associated empirical tests that can distinguish between these hypotheses, and assess how generally each hypothesis explains monogamy within and between breeding periods for species with different types of territories (i.e. feeding only or feeding and breeding). Hypotheses (1) and (2) have limited applicability to marine fishes, while hypotheses (3)-(5) have little empirical support beyond the species for which they were designed. However, the role of paternal care in promoting monogamous pair bonds is not explicit in these hypotheses, yet paternal care has been reported in more than 70 monogamous marine fish. We show that paternal care may act to increase the likelihood of monogamy in combination with each of the proposed hypotheses through decreased benefits to males from searching for additional mates or increased advantages to females from sequestering a single high-quality mate. Among species defending breeding and feeding territories, the benefits, both within and between reproductive periods, of sequestering a single high-quality mate (hypothesis 6) appear to be the best explanation for socially monogamous pairs. For species without parental care (i.e. holding only feeding territories), territory defence (hypothesis 5) in combination with the benefits of guarding a large mate (hypothesis 6) could potentially explain most instances of monogamy. Empirical studies of marine fishes over the past two decades are therefore slowly changing the view of monogamy from a mating system imposed upon species by environmental constraints to one with direct benefits to both sexes. 相似文献

Paired slices of rat gastric mucosa were incubated with labeled glucose or histidine in isosomotic solution of 3-fold hyperosmotic solutions concentrated in NaCl, KCl, or ethanol. The rate of (1-14C)glucose oxidation to 14CO2 in isosmotic solution was reduced by 74% in hyperosmotic NaCl and by 28% in hyperosmotic KCl. The rate of (6-14C)glucose oxidation to 14CO2 in isosmotic solution was reduced by 64% in hyperosmotic NaCl and by 53% in hyperosmotic KCl. Reductions of glucose oxidation in hyperosmotic ethanol were not significant. The ratio of 14CO2 formed from (1-14C)glucose to that formed from (6-14C)glucose was not significantly changes by hyperosmotic NaCl or ethanol, but was significantly raised by hyperosmotic KCl. The rate of (carboxyl-14C)histidine decarboxylation in isosomotic solution was reduced significantly by 48% in hyperosmotic NaCl, by 30% in hyperosmotic KCl, and by 27% in hyperosmotic ethanol. We conclude that hyperosmotic solutions reduce glucose oxidation and histidine decarboxylation by rat gastric mucosa in the order of potency: NaCl greater than Kcl greater than or equal to ethanol. Thus hyperosmotic solutions inhibit the source of metabolic energy for stimulated acid secretion, the citric acid cycle, and the formation of the secretagogue histamine. 相似文献

We report a hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics theoretical study on the reaction mechanism of mammalian histidine decarboxylase that allows us to obtain valuable insights on the structure of the cofactor-substrate adduct (external aldimine) in the active site of rat histidine decarboxylase. By means of molecular dynamics simulations, we traced the potential of mean force corresponding to the decarboxylation reaction of the adduct both in the active site of the enzyme and in aqueous solution. By comparing this process in both media, we have identified the key electrostatic interactions that explain the lowering of the free energy barrier in the enzyme. Our analysis also offers a validation of Dunathan's hypothesis (Dunathan, H. (1966) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 55, 712-716) regarding the role of stereoelectronic effects in the enzymatic decarboxylation process. 相似文献

The feeding behaviour and diets of fishes in two tropical habitats, a marine reef and a freshwater pond, were studied comparatively in Brazil. Similarities were found in the tactics employed to obtain food, the social patterns during foraging, and the general diet, notwithstanding lower-level taxonomic differences between the food items. The feeding behaviours of about one-third of the fish fauna from each community were approximately equivalent. The feeding categories of these fishes are briefly described. The similarities in the feeding modes probably reflect structural and functional properties shared by the two communities. Additional behavioural similarities of fishes in both habitats are presented and the lack of some particular foraging modes in each community is noted. The picture emerged that different, unrelated fish assemblages have the ability to evolve towards a similar behavioural and structural organization in response to comparable situations and constraints. The value of underwater observations and naturalistic studies on tropical freshwater fish assemblages is indicated. 相似文献

Marine fish from several locations along the west coast of Norway were examined for leeches. Seven leech species were detected, Calliobdella nodulifera (Malm, 1863) from codfish, flatfish and a ray, Calliobdella lophii van Beneden & Hesse, 1863 from Lophius piscatorius L., Platybdella anarrhichae (Diesing, 1859) on Anarhichas lupus L., Platybdella quadrioculata Malm, 1863 on Symphodus melops (L.), Oceanobdella sp. on Zeugopterus punctatus (Bloch), Malmiana brunnea (Johansson, 1896) on Myoxocephalus scorpius (L.) and Malmiana bubali Srivastava, 1966 on Taurulus bubalis (Euphrasen). Calliobdella nodulifera infected unrelated hosts (euryxenic); the others appeared to be host specialists (oio- or stenoxenic). Details on the occurrence of Calliobdella nodulifera on Enchelyopus cimbrius (L.) during 1 year are given, which together with other observations suggest that its life cycle exceeds a year. A brief account on the morphology of “Platybdella” quadrioculata is provided, justifying its transfer to the genus Oceanobdella Caballero, 1956 as O. quadrioculata comb. nov. With the new additions, the Norwegian marine piscicolid fauna contain 12 species. At least ten additional species, known from adjoining areas, also probably occur along the Norwegian coast. 相似文献

Three species of the genus Trichodina are reported from the gills of marine fishes in south-eastern Tasmania, Australia. Two of these species are new: T. australis n. sp. from five atherinid fish species, Atherinosoma microstoma, Leptatherina presbyteroides, Kestratherina brevirostris, K. esox and K. hepsetoides; and T. nesogobii n. sp. from Nesogobius sp. 1. The study deals with the lipid and fatty acid compositions of the muscles, gills and liver of marine fishes inhabiting cold waters (0.5–6°C) and caught in Peter the Great Bay (3 species) and Vostok Bay (2 species), as well as with the fatty acid compositions of the main phospholipids in the muscle tissues of fish from Olyutorskii Bay (4 species). The average content of phosphatidylcholine was about 60% in muscles and in the liver and 53.8% of the sum of all phospholipids in gills. The phosphatidylethanolamine content was on the average 24.3, 25.1 and 22.3% in muscles, liver and gills, respectively. Increased contents of phosphatidylserine and sphingomyeline were recorded in the gills. The mean (S.D.) molar ratios of cholesterol/phospholipids were 0.20, 0.32, and 0.58 in the muscles, liver, and gills, respectively. It was established that phosphatidylcholine has a higher content of saturated fatty acids, whereas phosphatidylethanolamine was richer in monoenic acids and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). It was noted that the level of polyenic fatty acids was increasing and the level of monoenic and saturated acids was decreasing in the series from gills-liver-muscles. The species with a more active mode of life were distinguished by an increased content of docosahexaenoic acid. 相似文献

The transition phase describes a distinct post-settlement stage associated with the recruitment to benthic habitats by pelagic life stages. The habitat shift is often accompanied by feeding shifts and metamorphosis from larval to juvenile phases. Density-dependent settlement, growth and mortality are often the major factors controlling recruitment success of this phase. Habitat use also becomes more pronounced after settlement. The role of habitat-mediated post-settlement mortality is elucidated by focusing on the early life history of Atlantic cod ( Gadus morhua ) and cunner ( Tautogolabrus adspersus ) in the north-west Atlantic. In these species, settlement can occur over all bottom types, but habitat-specific differences in post-settlement mortality rates combined with size and priority at settlement effects on growth and survival determine recruitment and eventual year-class strength. These results and those from other temperate marine fish species along with work on tropical reef species emphasize the generality of habitat-based density-dependent mortality during the transition phase and its potential for population regulation. These results have implications for fisheries management and can be used to outline a procedure to assist managers in identifying and managing essential transitional habitats including the potential role of marine protected areas in habitat conservation. 相似文献

Lineages that underwent rapid cladogenesis are attractive systems for the study of mechanisms underlying taxonomic, ecological, morphological, and behavioral diversification. Recently developed statistical methods provide insights into historical patterns of diversity and allow distinguishing bursts of cladogenesis from stochastic background rates in the presence of confounding factors such as extinction and incomplete taxon sampling. Here, we compare the dynamics of speciation in several marine fish lineages some of which were previously proposed to have undergone significant changes of cladogenesis through time. We tested for evidence of episodes of rapid cladogenesis using the constant rate and Monte Carlo constant rate tests that are robust to incomplete taxon sampling. These tests employ the statistic gamma to measure the relative position of internal node in a chronogram. For the first time, we conducted a comparative analysis to address the behavior of the statistic under different chronogram-constructing methods (Langley-Fitch, nonparametric rate smoothing, and penalized likelihood). Although estimates of gamma sometimes differ widely among methods, acceptance or rejection of the constant rate model within a particular clade appears to be robust to the choice of method. Bursts of cladogenesis were detected in 14 of 34 studied datasets. Some of these were previously proposed to represent marine fish "radiations," whereas others are identified anew. Our results indicate that the wider application of tree shape methods that are able to detect significantly elevated rates of speciation is useful to more precisely define clades that underwent episodes of rapid cladogenesis in marine fish clades. Contrasting the patterns of phylogenetic diversification in marine fish lineages may facilitate the identification of common evolutionary trajectories versus idiosyncrasies, and ultimately help towards a better understanding of the factors and processes underlying speciation in the marine realm. 相似文献

Electroreception in marine fishes occurs across a variety of taxa and is best understood in the chondrichthyans (sharks, skates, rays, and chimaeras). Here, we present an up-to-date review of what is known about the biology of passive electroreception and we consider how electroreceptive fishes might respond to electric and magnetic stimuli in a changing marine environment. We briefly describe the history and discovery of electroreception in marine Chondrichthyes, the current understanding of the passive mode, the morphological adaptations of receptors across phylogeny and habitat, the physiological function of the peripheral and central nervous system components, and the behaviours mediated by electroreception. Additionally, whole genome sequencing, genetic screening and molecular studies promise to yield new insights into the evolution, distribution, and function of electroreceptors across different environments. This review complements that of electroreception in freshwater fishes in this special issue, which provides a comprehensive state of knowledge regarding the evolution of electroreception. We conclude that despite our improved understanding of passive electroreception, several outstanding gaps remain which limits our full comprehension of this sensory modality. Of particular concern is how electroreceptive fishes will respond and adapt to a marine environment that is being increasingly altered by anthropogenic electric and magnetic fields. 相似文献
