Summary The ultrastructure of the tissue components of the eye ofGambusia affinis, excluding the sensory cells, is described. The cornea consists of two different sections of collagenous layers of different density. The choroid includes an argentea composed of- and-melanophores, lipopterinophores and a choriocapillaris associated with the rete mirabile of the choroid body. Bruch's membrane, underlying the retinal pigment layer, can develop complex associations with fibroblasts delimiting the choriocapillaris. The outer section (stroma) of the iris includes several cell types that are not found in the inner or vitread section. In adultGambusia the lens capsule is well developed, but in twoweek-oldSarotherodon larvae the lens epithelium is covered only by a glycocalyx.  相似文献

We report on the lens pigmentation and visual pigments of 52 species of demersal deep-sea fishes caught at depths ranging from 480 m to 4110 m in the Porcupine Seabight and Goban Spur area of the North-eastern Atlantic. Only one species, caught between 480 and 840 m, had a lens with large amounts of pigment, consistent with the hypothesis that heavily pigmented lenses in deep-sea fish serve to enhance the contrast of bioluminescent signals by removing much of the background radiance, which is only visible to fish living shallower than 1000 m. Low concentrations of lens pigmentation were also observed in a further two species (Rouleina attrita and Micromesisteus poutassou). The retinae of all species except five, contained only a single visual pigment, as determined by microspectrophotometry of individual rods, and/or spectrophotometry of retinal wholemounts and retinal extracts. Those fishes caught between 500 m and 1100 m had wavelengths of peak sensitivity (max) ranging from 476 nm to 494 nm, while most fish living below 1100 m tended to be more conservative with (max) values ranging from 475 nm to 485 nm. The only exceptions to this were three deep-living species caught between 1600 m and 2000 m whose retinae contain abnormally short-wave sensitive visual pigments (Cataetyx laticepsmax 468 nm; Alepocephalus bairdiimax 467 nm; Narcetes stomias max 472 nm), suggesting adaptation for the detection of short-wave bioluminescence.  相似文献

This study provides the length‐weight relationship for eleven mesopelagic fishes from oceanic islands of the Southwestern Tropical Atlantic: Bonapartia pedaliota, Sigmops elongatus (Gonostomatidae), Argyropelecus aculeatus, Argyropelecus affinis, Argyropelecus sladeni, Sternoptyx diaphana, Sternoptyx pseudobscura (Sternoptychidae), Malacosteus niger, Thysanactis dentex (Stomiidae), Melanonus zugmayeri (Melanonidae), and Ectreposebastes imus (Setarchidae). Data were collected during a scientific survey (2017) around Rocas Atoll, Fernando de Noronha Archipelago and adjacent seamounts, using a micronekton trawl (side length of body mesh: 40 mm, side length of cod‐end mesh: 10 mm) at 35 stations from 0 to 1,113 m depth. A new maximum standard length for Bonapartia pedaliota and Ectreposebastes imus are also provided.  相似文献

Two biological processes regulate light‐induced skin colour change. A fast ‘physiological pigmentation change’ (i.e. circadian variations or camouflage) involves alterations in the distribution of pigment containing granules in the cytoplasm of chromatophores, while a slower ‘morphological pigmentation change’ (i.e. seasonal variations) entails changes in the number of pigment cells or pigment type. Although linked processes, the neuroendocrine coordination triggering each response remains largely obscure. By evaluating both events in Xenopus laevis embryos, we show that morphological pigmentation initiates by inhibiting the activity of the classical retinal ganglion cells. Morphological pigmentation is always accompanied by physiological pigmentation, and a melatonin receptor antagonist prevents both responses. Physiological pigmentation also initiates in the eye, but with repression of melanopsin‐expressing retinal ganglion cell activity that leads to secretion of alpha‐melanocyte‐stimulating hormone (α‐MSH). Our findings suggest a model in which eye photoperception links physiological and morphological pigmentation by altering α‐MSH and melatonin production, respectively.  相似文献

We studied the behavior of the Poeciliid fishGambusia affinis after the introduction of 3 substances into their tank: a homogenization ofGambusia affinis, a homogenization of the Anabantid fishBetta splendens, and a blank made of distilled water. The response of the fish was measured as a change in their spatial distribution in the tank after the introduction of the substance. Two sizes of fish were used, and theGambusia homogenization produced clear alarm reactions in both, the fish fleeing to the bottom of the tank. This is one of a few examples available of recognition of alarm substances in non-ostariophysian fish. In addition, we found that the small fishes that had recently been exposed to the alarm substance stayed in an ‘alert state’, in which they had an increased sensitivity to mechanical and visual fright stimuli.  相似文献

The generaLagenocystis Yamaguti, 1970,Oesophagocystis Yamaguti, 1970 andDidymosulcus Pozdnyakov, 1990 are synonymised withDidymocystis. The synonymies ofUnivitellodidymocystis Yamaguti, 1970 andDidymocystoides Yamaguti, 1970, but notCoeliodidymocystis Yamaguti, 1970, withDidymocystis, as proposed by Pozdnyakov (1990), are accepted.Didymocystis bifasciatus (Yamaguti, 1970) is considered a synonym ofD. alalongae Yamaguti, 1970 andD. philobranchia Yamaguti, 1970 ofD. bifurcata Yamaguti, 1970. Of the nine species reported, eight constitute new reports from the Bay of Bengal. A key to the species ofDidymocystis from scombrid fishes of the Visakhapatnam coast is presented.  相似文献

Three stains of cellulose-degrading, aerobic, mesophilic bacteria were isolated from forest soils and, from their cultural, biochemical, and physiological characteristics, they were identified as members of the genusCellulomonas. Unusual biochemical characteristics, e.g. urea hydrolysis, were observed in two isolates. These characteristics have not previously been reported for cellulomonads and may prove to be significant for characterization ofCellulomonas spp. The isolates were able to use urea as a N source in cellulose fermentation. All three strains were motile, with one to four peritrichous flagella observed. Amino acid and polysaccharide composition of the cell walls of the three isolates were identical.  相似文献

Several taxa of cryptomonads, including species of marineChroomonas, Cryptomonas and freshwaterRhodomonas were examined using transmission electron microscopy. They have cellular structures fundamentally in common: a single bilobed chlorplast, a single pyrenoid between the chloroplast lobes, and a nuclemorph embedded within a cleft of the pyrenoidal matrix. These features are in accordance with the taxonomic characteristics of the recently established genusPyrenomonas. The algae also have similar pigmentation to that ofRhodomonas andPyrenomonas which is red or reddish-brown. On the basis of these observations, the genusRhodomonas Karsten (1898) is redescribed in this paper and the genusPyrenomonas Santore is considered to be synonymous withRhodomonas.  相似文献

A phylogenetic analysis was conducted on sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of nuclear ribosomal DNA in 23 species ofAveneae (Poaceae subfam.Pooideaae). These sequences ofHelictotrichon spp.,Arrhenatherum elatius, Avena spp.,Trisetum spp.,Koeleria spp.,Holcus lanatus, Alopecurus vaginatus together with published ITS sequences of furtherAveneae, Poeae, Triticeae, andBromeae were analysed by the neighbor-joining distance method to assess the molecular phylogenetic relationship in perennial and annualAveneae. The results suggest unexpectedly close affinities of the agronomically important genusAvena to comparatively small-flowered taxa ofAveneae. GenusArrhenatherum and small-flowered subgenera ofHelictotrichon are close extant relatives. The large genusHelictotrichon is para- if not polyphyletic, only its subgenera are monophyletic.Trisetum is clearly separated fromHelictotrichon and forms together withKoeleria and perhaps others a monophyletic lineage which is characterised by a conspicuous 9-bp deletion in ITS1. The impact of the ITS data on the delineation of some genera and subtribes ofAveneae and on the recognition of their biogeographical and ecological patterns is outlined.  相似文献

The small spotted dogfish Scyliorhinus canicula and the blackmouth dogfish Galeus melastomus, whose depth distributions overlap in the upper part of the slope (c. 500 m depth), where they have access to the same prey community, have well‐developed eyes and a pure‐rod retina with a single layer of photoreceptors. Interspecific differences in rod outer segment length (LROS) within retinal regions were found. In the periphery and the retinal centre G. melastomus showed a LROS 24 and 30% longer, respectively, than S. canicula and, therefore, a potential for increased sensitivity. In both species longer LROS were always found in correspondence with the retinal centre where the ganglion cell topography formed a horizontal meridian that allowed for better discrimination of the horizon in the visual field. In this area LROS reached 53·4±4·1μm in S. canicula and 77·1±10·5μm in G. melastomus against 46·3±4·2μm and 61·1±10·1μm in the retinal periphery. No significant differences were recorded in LROS and rod density during growth. In both species, a rapid increase of theoretical visual acuity was found to be related to an increase in fish LT and lens size. Visual acuity ranged between 1·7 and 3 cycles degree‐1 in S. canicula and 2·4 and 4·2 in G. melastomus. The G. melastomus rod visual pigment showed the characteristic spectral adaptation to vision in deep‐water (λmax of 481 nm), but was also well placed to detect the bioluminescence of some of its main prey species. In S. canicula the visual pigment absorption (λmax of 496 nm) was more typical of shallow water living fishes. The opsin sequences of the two visual pigments are discussed and key amino acid sites were identified where sequence changes could be responsible for the spectral absorption differences between the two species. The possible relationship between LROS, visual acuity, visual pigment absorption, depth distribution and feeding behaviour are discussed.  相似文献

Comparative histological observations of the eyes of Typhlotriton spelaeus and several epigean, plethodontid species indicate that the principal postembryonic degenerative changes in the eyes of T. spelaeus involve the eyelids and cornea, visual cells, outer plexiform layer, and the pigment epithelium. Ordinarily these changes were initiated after metamorphosis, before attainment of sexual maturity, but a few larvae had degenerating retinae. The corneal epithelium becomes irregular and thin as eyelids develop during and after metamorphosis, but retains its larval structure in animals in which eyelid overlap is incomplete. Disruption and vacuolation of the lens sometimes occurs in postmetamorphic animals with degenerating visual cells. Retinal degeneration involves reduction of the inner and outer segments of visual cells, loss of the outer plexiform layer, and retraction of apical processes of the pigment epithelium. In its earliest stage, retinal reduction is first apparent at the retinal margin where visual cells are normally less well-differentiated, but in its terminal stage reduction has gone to completion over the entire retina. Extent of retinal degeneration in adults is directly related to postmetamorphic age but there is variability in each age group. Females generally have smaller eyes, and more extensive degeneration of visual cells than males. The loss of visual function in adults is correlated with extensive visual cell degeneration.  相似文献

The human retinal pigment epithelium forms early in development and subsequently remains dormant, undergoing minimal proliferation throughout normal life. Retinal pigment epithelium proliferation, however, can be activated in disease states or by removing retinal pigment epithelial cells into culture. We review the conditions that control retinal pigment epithelial proliferation in culture, in animal models and in human disease and interpret retinal pigment epithelium proliferation in context of the recently discovered retinal pigment epithelium stem cell that is responsible for most in vitro retinal pigment epithelial proliferation. Retinal pigment epithelial proliferation-mediated wound repair that occurs in selected macular diseases is contrasted with retinal pigment epithelial proliferation-mediated fibroblastic scar formation that underlies proliferative vitreoretinopathy. We discuss the role of retinal pigment epithelial proliferation in age-related macular degeneration which is reparative in some cases and destructive in others. Macular retinal pigment epithelium wound repair and regression of choroidal neovascularization are more pronounced in younger than older patients. We discuss the possibility that the limited retinal pigment epithelial proliferation and latent wound repair in older age-related macular degeneration patients can be stimulated to promote disease regression in age-related macular degeneration.  相似文献

Teleost fishes have evolved a unique complexity and diversity of pigmentation and colour patterning that is unmatched among vertebrates. Teleost colouration is mediated by five different major types of neural‐crest derived pigment cells, while tetrapods have a smaller repertoire of such chromatophores. The genetic basis of teleost colouration has been mainly uncovered by the cloning of pigmentation genes in mutants of zebrafish Danio rerio and medaka Oryzias latipes. Many of these teleost pigmentation genes were already known as key players in mammalian pigmentation, suggesting partial conservation of the corresponding developmental programme among vertebrates. Strikingly, teleost fishes have additional copies of many pigmentation genes compared with tetrapods, mainly as a result of a whole‐genome duplication that occurred 320–350 million years ago at the base of the teleost lineage, the so‐called fish‐specific genome duplication. Furthermore, teleosts have retained several duplicated pigmentation genes from earlier rounds of genome duplication in the vertebrate lineage, which were lost in other vertebrate groups. It was hypothesized that divergent evolution of such duplicated genes may have played an important role in pigmentation diversity and complexity in teleost fishes, which therefore not only provide important insights into the evolution of the vertebrate pigmentary system but also allow us to study the significance of genome duplications for vertebrate biodiversity.  相似文献

Summary A new haploid, homothallic yeast isolated from the larval feed ofXylocopa caffra is described. A study of its properties shows that the evolution of its sexual and biochemical characteristics has not taken place at the same rate as in the genusHansenula and the proposed genusDekkeromyces. This led the author to the conclusion that in the yeast domain phylogenetic lines may exist in which a unilateral evolution of biochemical characteristics has taken place. At least thre groups of yeasts exist where such discrepancies exist between the evolution of their sexual and biochemical characteristics. The inclusion of the new species in these groups is discussed. The new species has provisionally been classified in the genusPichia (in sensu Phaff). A Latin diagnosis of the species is given.  相似文献

Synopsis The cichlid fish, Haplochromis burtoni, is highly dependent on vision for survival in its natural habitat. As is true of most teleost fishes, the eyes continue to grow throughout life without any obvious changes in visual capability. In H. burtoni, for example, retinal area may increase by 27 × in just 6 months. During growth, there is no obvious change in the visual sensitivity, visual acuity or lens quality which must all be appropriate for the enlarging eye. This requires that during growth competing constraints be met. For example, to maintain visual acuity, the number of ganglion cells per visual angle subtended on the retina must remain the same as must the convergence ratio of the cones onto those ganglion cells. In contrast, to maintain visual sensitivity, the number of rod photoreceptors per unit retinal area must remain the same. These requirements are in conflict since a larger eye may preserve acuity with fewer cells per unit area in a larger retina. In addition, the lens properties must remain the same as the animal increases in size so that the image available is of similar quality throughout life. Experiments have been performed to reveal the adaptations during growth which allow the fish to preserve its image of the world throughout life.  相似文献

The morphology of the eyes and distribution of retinal ganglion cells in two sardine species (Sardinops melanostictus and Etrumeus sadina, Clupeidae) and the Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonicus, Engraulididae) were investigated anatomically and histologically. The eyes of the sardines faced a slightly dorsolateral direction with the visual field extended obliquely upward. In contrast, the eyes in the anchovy were almost laterally directed. It was hypothesized that the sardines may have an advantage in receiving more downward irradiance compared with the anchovy. The lens muscle was larger in these three species than in many other teleosts, and its surface was entirely melanin‐pigmented. Also, the lens muscle directly and tightly adhered to the backside surface of the iris. The relative area of the lens muscle to the area of the lens, a referential value of the relative power of visual accommodation were notably larger in the species studied than in other teleost values that have been previously reported. A higher M/L% value of these clupeid fishes could facilitate fast and wide ranging visual accommodation and was considered to be associated with maintaining and/or re‐establishing school formations quickly. Analysis of topographical distributions of cells in the ganglion cell layer showed that cell density was highest in the ventrotemporal quadrant of the retina (temporal of the optic cleft) in all three species. Another potentially important role for the black‐pigmented lens muscle may be to block the specialized retinal area from intense sunlight that scatters and irradiates upward or laterally in the surface waters that they inhabit. Thus, the sardine and anchovy may take advantage of efficient detection of visual signals in the frontal‐upward direction and further improve visibility of the target in this direction. J. The embryonic and larval development ofCobitis takatsuensis, a mountain stream spinous loach, was surveyed by incubating artificially inseminated eggs. The mean diameter of the inflated eggs and mean total length of newly-hatched larvae were 2.7 mm and 5.7 mm, respectively. The eggs were spherical, transparent and unpigmented, with a pale yellow yolk and no oil globule. The daily cumulative temperature to hatching was estimated to be 70–110°C. day. Hatched larvae were unpigmented with outer gill filaments on their cheeks, as in otherCobitis species, but the melanophores were comparatively less obvious at each developmental stage. The larvae started feeding eleven days after hatching yolk absorption being completed sixteen days after hatching. All the fin rays were fully developed and the juvenile stage reached at 16 mm TL, 38 days after hatching. Embryonic and larval developmental traits ofC. takatsuensis, such as egg size, clutch size and larval pigmentation, were similar to the Korean species,Niwaella multifasciata, that lives in the upper reaches of the Nak-tong river, andN. delicata, which inhabits Japanese mountain streams, rather than to its congeners. Among cobitine fishes, the spawning of a small number of larger eggs yielding larger larvae without pigmentation, characteristics shared byC. takatsuensis, N. multifasciata andN. delicata, is attributable to adaptation to cold mountain streams.  相似文献

The typical series of the genusBilinia ObrhelovA 1971 (Pisces, Percoidei) from the diato-mite beds of Ku?lín near Bílina (North of Bohemia, ?SR) kept in the National Museum of Prag was re-examinated. Morphological comparisons with other Eocene percoid fishes were supplemented with several very important features. As far as necessary, other observations were corrected. Deviations of certain morphological details, which sometimes are noticed among different specimens ofBilinia, are discussed with respect to the probable range of intrageneric variability. A new, revised diagnosis is proposed for the genusBilinia Obrhelová. Concerning the systematics, an assignment of this genus to the Percichthyidae in their widest meaning (c. t. Gosline 1966, Johnson 1984) seems to make more sense than the former classification with the Serranidae. Within this group, especially the genusAmphiperca Weitzel 1933 must be regarded as the presumably closest relative ofBilinia Obrhelová.  相似文献

Synopsis Current information on systematics and morphology of larvae and juveniles ofSebastes is reviewed, as are intrageneric relationships among the many species of the genus. Although some subgenera may remain after a cladistic analysis of the genus, others are probably artificial groupings of species that have convergent morphologies because of similar ecology. The relationships ofSebastes to other scorpaeniform fishes as well as the relationships of scorpaeniforms to other fishes are not resolved. Of the 102 species ofSebastes worldwide, 69 species have been illustrated as preflexion larvae, 35 as postflexion larvae and 65 as pelagic juveniles. Morphological characters of each of these stages were used to compare species, group them by similar appearances and then compare these groupings with existing subgenera. Some pigment patterns of preflexion larvae were rather consistent among species within certain subgenera but quite variable among species in other subgenera. Postflexion larvae fell into 11 groups based on pigment, head spines and body shape. These groups were not closely aligned with the subgeneric assignments of the component species. On the basis of pigment patterns of pelagic juveniles, six groups were evident, but the specific composition of these groups bore little resemblance to either the larval or subgeneric groups.  相似文献
