Influence of host plant heterogeneity on the distribution of a birch aphid   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Abstract.  1. The spatial and temporal abundance of the aphid Euceraphis betulae was investigated in relation to heterogeneity in host plant ( Betula pendula ) vigour and pathogenic stress. The performance of aphids feeding on vigorous and stressed foliage was also examined.
2. The plant stress and plant vigour hypotheses have been suggested as opposing ways in which foliage quality influences herbivore abundance. In many plants, however, vigorous growing foliage co-exists with stressed or damaged foliage.
3. There was a negative correlation between branch growth (vigour) and branch stress (leaf chlorosis), with the most vigorous branches displaying little or no stress, and the most stressed branches achieving poor growth. There was a similar negative correlation between vigour and stress at the level of individual trees, which themselves represented a continuum in quality.
4. At the beginning of the season, E. betulae were intermittently more abundant on vigorous branches than on branches destined to become stressed, but aphids became significantly more abundant on stressed branches later in the season, when symptoms of stress became apparent. Similar patterns of aphid abundance were seen on vigorous and stressed trees in the following year.
5. Euceraphis betulae performance was generally enhanced when feeding on naturally stressed B. pendula leaves, but there was some evidence for elevated potential reproduction when feeding on vigorous leaves too.
6. Overall, plant stress probably influences E. betulae distribution more than plant vigour, but the temporal and spatial variability in plant quality suggests that plant vigour could play a role in aphid distribution early in the season.  相似文献

According to the nutrient-translocation hypothesis, yellowing tree leaves are colonized by aphids at the end of the growing season owing to improved availability of nutrients in the phloem sap after chlorophyll degradation. We measured aphid densities on potted Betula pendula seedlings in a field site where a small proportion of foliage rapidly turned yellow before normal autumn coloration as a consequence of root anoxia. The number of adults and nymphs of the birch-feeding specialist aphids Euceraphis betulae, Betulaphis brevipilosa and Callipterinella tuberculata were counted from leaves on each of the 222 plants. Aphids were detected on 19 per cent of green leaves and on 41 per cent of yellow leaves. There was no indication of aphid avoidance of yellow leaves, and the number of winged (alate) viviparous E. betulae adults and their nymphs were significantly higher on yellow leaves than on green leaves, while the numbers of apterous B. brevipilosa and C. tuberculata did not differ between the leaf colour types. Our result suggests that only aphid species with alate generation during colour change can take advantage of yellowing leaves. This may explain the exceptional abundance of E. betulae compared with other aphid species on birches.  相似文献

Seven aphid species (Eucalipterus tiliae, Tuberculatus annulatus, Euceraphis betulae, Cavariella konoi, Acyrthosiphon ignotum, A. pisum, Macrosiphoniella artemisiae) were tested as prey for larvae of Anatis ocellata and all were essential prey. Nine aphid species (Chaitophorus tremulae, Cavariella konoi, Aphis farinosa, Eucalipterus tiliae, Euceraphis betulae, Macrosiphoniella artemisiae, Acyrthosiphon ignotum, Aphis spiraephaga, Aphis fabae) were tested as prey for Calvia quatuordecimguttata. The former six species were 'essential' food, while the latter three aphid species were unsuitable food for C. quatuordecimguttata. The experiments were conducted under laboratory conditions with no choice of prey. Some of the checked 'essential' prey apparently do not represent food in the field as they occur in other habitats than the studied coccinellid species that are common on trees.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The birch ( Betula )-feeding aphid, Monaphis antennata, is always found at low densities on individual hosts and has low local abundance, but another birch-feeding aphid, Euceraphis betulae , is often found at high densities on individual hosts and has high local abundance.
2. This work attempts to establish whether the interaction between M. antennata and its host or the behaviour of individuals limits its densities.
3. Both species were reared on saplings, and population sizes were monitored for 6 weeks. Two levels of host quality were used and feeding space was kept constant throughout the experiment. Adults were prevented from leaving the saplings by clipping their wings, and predators were excluded.
4. On plants of similar host quality, both species achieved similar population sizes.
5. It is concluded that resource availability or the interactions between individuals are unlikely to be important causes of rarity.  相似文献

The role of indirect interactions in structuring communities is becoming increasingly recognised. Plant fungi can bring about changes in plant chemistry which may affect insect herbivores that share the same plant, and hence the two may interact indirectly. This study investigated the indirect effects of a fungal pathogen ( Marssonina betulae) of silver birch ( Betula pendula) on an aphid ( Euceraphis betulae), and the processes underpinning the interaction. There was a strong positive association between natural populations of the aphid and leaves bearing high fungal infection. In choice tests, significantly more aphids settled on leaves inoculated with the fungus than on asymptomatic leaves. Individual aphids reared on inoculated leaves were heavier, possessed longer hind tibiae and displayed enhanced embryo development compared with aphids reared on asymptomatic leaves; population growth rate was also positively correlated with fungal infection when groups of aphids were reared on inoculated branches. Changes in leaf chemistry were associated with fungal infection with inoculated leaves containing higher concentrations of free-amino acids. This may reflect a plant-initiated response to fungal attack in which free amino acids from the degradation of mesophyll cells are translocated out of infected leaves via the phloem. These changes in plant chemistry are similar to those occurring during leaf senescence, and are proposed as the mechanistic basis for the positive interaction between the fungus and aphid.  相似文献

Phenological synchrony between budburst and emergence of larvae is critical for the fitness of many spring-feeding insect herbivores. Therefore, large intraspecific variation in timing of budburst of the host may have a negative effect on the herbivore. We studied how asynchrony between emergence of larvae and budburst affects the fitness of Operophtera brumata (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), a major defoliator of Quercus robur, which can adapt to the phenology of a single tree. It is known that, in maturing leaves of Q. robur, accumulation of condensed tannins has a negative effect on growth of O. brumata. However, there is no information about the effect of hydrolysable tannins and other phenolics that are potential antifeedants. In this study, we also analysed changes in secondary chemistry of the foliage of Q. robur and how different compounds are correlated with growth and survival of O. brumata. The effect of asynchrony on O. brumata was studied in rearing experiments. The neonate larvae were incubated without food for different periods of time. The decline in nutritional quality of foliage was estimated by rearing cohorts of larvae with manipulated hatching times on the leaves of ten individual Q. robur trees. For the chemical analysis, the foliage of these trees was sampled at regular intervals. In the absence of foliage, mortality of neonate larvae started to increase exponentially soon after the larvae emerged. If the larvae missed budburst, the decline in nutritional quality of the foliage led to increased mortality and lower body mass (= fecundity). Hydrolysable tannins were not significantly correlated with performance of the larvae. Only condensed tannins were found to correlate negatively with the growth and survival of O. brumata. Certain individual trees were unsuitable hosts for O. brumata because the decline in quality of the foliage was very rapid. Based on regression equations for increasing rate of mortality and decreasing fecundity, we calculated that a relatively small mismatch of +/-30 degree days between budburst and hatching of larvae leads to a 50% decrease in the fitness of O. brumata. Thus, large phenological variation within a Q. robur stand can limit the colonisation of neighbouring trees by dispersing larvae. Furthermore, the hybridisation of moths adapted to phenologically different trees may lead to maladapted phenology of their offspring.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Two aphid species feed exclusively on pine needles, Schizolachnus pineti (Fabr.) occupying only the outer (curved) surface with Eulachnus agilis (Kalt.) showing a preference for the inner (flat) surface.
2. Despite E.agilis favouring and S.pineti avoiding senescing needles, both species show a significant tendency to share shoots and needles in the field.
3. The same association is also apparent under laboratory conditions, although E.agilis is randomly distributed between needles in the absence of S.pineti.
4. E.agilis was found to benefit through increased survival and faster growth rates, by feeding on the same shoots and needles as S.pineti.
5. It is suggested that E.agilis may be able to detect and exploit an improvement in the nutritive quality of needles brought about by the feeding activity of S.pineti colonies.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. A study of searching behaviour on wheat and host preference of Aphidius rhopalosiphi (DeStefani-Perez) is described.
2. Parasitoids divided their time equally between the leaves but spent very little time on the ear.
3. After contact with honeydew or an aphid host, parasitoids were arrested in a particular area and increased the time spent searching.
4. Aphids feeding on the ear were parasitized less successfully, since their position between the grains protected them from parasitoid attacks.
5. A.rhopalosiphi exhibited no preference for Metopolophium dirhodum (Walker) or Sitobion avenae (Fabricius), although the handling time for the latter was significantly longer; this resulted in fewer S.avenae being parasitized when it was abundant. Parasitoids did not switch between hosts in these experiments.
6. As a result of its searching behaviour, A.rhopalosiphi will encounter and parasitize M.dirhodum feeding on the leaves more frequently than S.avenae, which feeds on the ear. This will limit the parasitoid's ability to regulate populations of the cereal aphid S. avenae.  相似文献

Abstract. Aphids formerly regarded as Euceraphis punctipennis (Zetterstedt) are distinguished as two species, E.punctipennis and E.betulae (Koch), on the basis of cytological and morphological differences. E.punctipennis is primarily associated with Betula pubescens Ehrh., and E. betulae with B.pendula Roth. Seasonal variations in morphometrics, pigmentation and development of wax glands in the two species are described and compared. 1 The influence of six open-pollinated families (OPFs) of Eucalyptus grandis on both the growth and development of larvae and the oviposition preference of a paropsine chrysomelid ( Paropsis atomaria ) was investigated. The OPFs had previously been identified as differing in their susceptibility to defoliation by P. atomaria in forestry progeny trials.
2 Oviposition preference for resistant and susceptible foliage was tested using binary choice tests. These tests did not demonstrate any significant preference for either resistant or susceptible open-pollinated material indicating that adult host preference for susceptible trees was not a likely cause of differential defoliation.
3 Quantification and analysis of growth and development parameters for all larval stages of P. atomaria showed that feeding on genetic material identified as resistant resulted in a significant reduction of relative growth rate of first instar larvae and an alteration to normal feeding behaviour. There was also a trend towards increased larval mortality on resistant E. grandis .
4 We argue that although the magnitude of these effects was minor, interactions with additional biotic and abiotic sources of mortality in the field have the potential, when magnified over successive generations, to result in significant variation in defoliation of host genotypes in the field.  相似文献

The effect of atmospheric change on birch aphid ( Euceraphis betulae Koch) oviposition preference was examined and plant characteristics that are possibly responsible for the observed effects were investigated. It was hypothesized that the increasing concentrations of CO2 and O3 affect singly or in combination the oviposition of birch aphids via changes in host plant characteristics. Two genotypes of field-growing silver birch ( Betula pendula Roth) trees (clones 4 and 80), which were exposed to doubled ambient concentration of CO2 and O3, singly and in combination, in a 3-year open-top chamber experiment, were used in an aphid oviposition preference test. It was found that elevated CO2, irrespective of ozone concentration, increased the number of aphid eggs laid on clone 4, but not in clone 80. Several flavonoid aglycones were identified from the exudate coating of birch buds. Although elevated CO2 and O3 affected these phenolic compounds in clone 4, the effects did not correlate with the observed changes in aphid oviposition. It is suggested that neither bud length, which was not affected by the treatments, nor surface exudate phenolics mediate birch aphid oviposition preference.  相似文献

Studies were conducted to examine the effect of potassium (K) on soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura, population growth. A laboratory feeding assay examined the effect of K-deficient foliage on life table parameters of soybean aphids, and field experiments were designed to determine the effect of three soil K treatment levels on aphid populations and their impact on soybean yields. The feeding assay found that life table parameters differed between aphids feeding on the K-deficient and nondeficient soybean leaves. Soybean aphids in the K-deficient treatment exhibited significantly greater intrinsic rate of increase (r(m)), finite rate of increase (lambda), and net reproductive rate (Ro) relative to aphids feeding on nondeficient leaves. No significant difference was observed in mean generation time (T) between the two treatments. However, the field experiment repeated over 2 yr showed no effect of K on soybean aphid populations. Soybean aphid populations were high in unsprayed plots and feeding resulted in significant yield losses in 2002 at all three K treatment levels: when averaged across 2001 and 2002, unsprayed treatments yielded 22, 18, and 19.5% less than the sprayed plots in the low, medium, and high K treatments, respectively. No significant interaction was observed between aphid abundance and K level on soybean yields in either year. This study therefore suggests that although aphids can perform better on K-deficient plants, aphid abundance in the field may be dependent on additional factors, such as dispersal, that may affect final densities within plots.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. We examined the preference of larvae of the Mexican bean beetle, Epilachna varivestis Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), for foliage of soybean ( Glycine max [L.] Merr.) grown under several levels of water deficit. Third instar larvae were exposed simultaneously to excised foliage from plants that were either well-watered (control) or had experienced water deficits (treatment).
2. Water-deficient plants were re-watered 12 h prior to initiating feeding trials to eliminate physical differences between control and treatment foliage such as leaf water potential, diffusive resistance, relative water content, and foliage toughness.
3. Examination of the free amino acid contents of re-watered and excised foliage indicated that amino acid concentrations increased markedly in foliage grown under water deficits, and that this increase persisted during the preference tests.
4. Larvae preferred control foliage, but shifted preference to treatment foliage under mild water deficits. When the leaf water potential of water-deficient treatment foliage was lower than – 1.13 MPa or when it was more than 0.5 MPa lower than that of control foliage, larvae preferred to feed on foliage from well-watered control plants.
5. The expression of preference for well-watered control foliage was coincident with increases in the concentrations of total free amino acids and individual free amino acids in the water-deficient treatment foliage.
6. These results are inconsistent with White's (1974) hypothesis because Mexican bean beetle larvae avoid plants grown under water deficits that have increased concentrations of free amino acids.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The effect of previous damage on the suitability of willow ( Mix bubylonicu and S.ulbu 'Tristis') leaves as food for the imported willow leaf beetle, Plugiodera versicoloru Laich. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), was evaluated by feeding adults and larvae leaves from damaged and undamaged branchlets.
2. Females had lower fecundity when fed leaves from artificially damaged branchlets of S.ufba 'Tristis'. A similar result was obtained when beetles ate leaves from naturally damaged branchlets of S.babylonica .
3. Feeding preference tests suggest that the reductions in leaf suitability were not due to adults avoiding damaged leaves as a food source.
4. PZugiodera versicolora larvae required longer to develop and attained a lower adult weight when fed leaves from damaged branchlets.
5. Changes in leaf suitability brought about by herbivore feeding may affect the seasonal abundance of P.versicoloru on its willow hosts.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The pedunculate oak, Quercus robur L., suffers high annual levels of spring defoliation in Wytham Woods, Oxon. The two major defoliators, Tortrix viridana L. and Operophtera brumata L., sometimes reach high enough densities to completely defoliate trees.
2. Experiments with larvae of both species enclosed on oak trees in Wytham Woods suggest considerable potential for intra- and interspecific competition between T. viridana and O. brumata.
3. T. viridana and O. brumata consume equivalent amounts of leaf tissue per unit caterpillar density. Despite this, O. brumata is the superior competitor, measured by mortality during the larval feeding period.
4. Evidence is presented that T. viridana larvae depend upon the protected microclimate of leaf rolls to maintain water balance, and that leaf damage may disrupt the construction of, and microclimate within, leaf rolls. O. brumata may therefore be competitively superior because it indirectly interferes with the water balance of T. viridana.
5. The importance of interspecific competition in the dynamics of T. viridana and O. brumata populations is discussed. Stochastic mortality factors acting on first instar larvae of both species probably make intense competition a rare event.  相似文献

Abstract 1. The herbaceous plant Solanum carolinense (L.) (Solanaceae) is host to a number of specialist insects, including the leaf-feeding beetles Epitrix fuscula (Crotch) and Leptinotarsa juncta (Germar) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). Potted individuals of S. carolinense were subjected to one of two treatments: exposure to herbivory by E. fuscula or exclusion of all herbivores. The effects of E. fuscula herbivory on larval performance and oviposition preference of L. juncta were investigated.
2. Although the masses of the L. juncta pupae did not differ between the two treatments, larvae feeding on damaged plants developed more slowly than those feeding on undamaged plants.
3. In both paired leaf choice trials and whole plant choice trials, larvae of L. juncta showed no preference for undamaged versus damaged hosts.
4. In a field transplant experiment, adult L. juncta females showed slight feeding preferences and strong oviposition preferences for undamaged plants versus plants that had been fed on by E. fuscula .
5. The results are discussed with reference to their implications for plant-mediated competition among herbivores and constraints on the evolution of plant resistance.  相似文献

Summary Larvae of Platyprepia virginalis (Lep.: Arctiidae) and Orgyia vetusta (Lep.: Lymantriidae) feed on the foliage of bush lupine (Lupinus arboreus Sims) at Bodega Bay, California, USA, in February–April and May–July, respectively. Female O. vetusta attained lower pupal weights and produced fewer eggs on branches of L. arboreus which had experimentally received P. virginalis damage earlier in the same year, compared to those reared on control branches.Growth rates of first-instar O. vetusta were lower on undamaged leaves of previously damaged L. arboreus than on leaves of undamaged controls. This was true for lupine bushes damaged by P. virginalis in the field; and also for greenhouse-grown lupine plants damaged by Estigmene acrea (Lep.: Arctiidae) when excised foliage was used in the assay. However, fifth (last) instar female O. vetusta larvae showed no preference for damaged versus undamaged greenhouse-grown L. arboreus in their feeding or choice of a site for pupation.These experiments demonstrate the potential for competition-like interactions between herbivores mediated by changes in quality of the shared host.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The population dynamics of Tortix viridana L. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) and Operophtera brumata L. (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) on the pedunculate oak Quercus robur L. are driven by the degree to which larval hatch coincides with oak budburst in spring.
2. Experiments with first instar larvae demonstrate that T. viridana has a much narrower dietary breadth, is less inclined to disperse from closed oak buds, and can resist starvation for longer periods than the polyphagous O.brumata.
3. As a result of its specialist foraging strategy, T. viridana may be less susceptible to mortality associated with colonization of oak in spring than O.brumata. This may explain why T. viridana populations are, on average, higher.
4. These results are discussed in the light of previous work which described the competitive advantage of O. brumata in field cage experiments. Stochastic mortality factors, which drive population change in both species independently of competition, favour T.viridana larvae, and over-ride the competitive superiority of O.brumata.  相似文献

The selective advantage offered to individuals living within groups may relate to natural enemy defence, but in leaf feeding insects may also relate to overcoming plant defences, especially with respect to feeding establishment. We conducted a series of experiments focusing on neonate larval survival, examining the effect of group size and leaf age on the survival of a eucalypt-feeding beetle, Chrysophtharta agricola , which formed groups of up to 43 larvae on the foliage of Eucalyptus nitens in the field. In the laboratory, in the absence of natural enemies, we found that initial density, leaf age and damage to the leaf margin significantly affected larval survival. Survival of solitary first-instar larvae on young foliage was around 80% whereas on older foliage it was around 11%. Prior damage to the leaf margin significantly increased survival on older leaves to around 61%. Initial larval density also affected survival, although mortality was always significantly higher on older leaves. On older leaves the larval group size above which mortality increased no further was over two-fold that on young leaves. Observations of group feeding behaviour at each instar showed that the majority of larvae (75.7%) were aligned facing away from the feeding site and that only around 7.5%, or just 1–2 larvae per group, fed at any one time. Feeding larvae chewed the leaf edge by straddling the leaf margin. Measurements of leaf margins showed that older leaves had significantly thicker leaf margins and 'thickness' ratios (leaf margin to leaf lamina proper). In the field, approximately 85% of all larvae occurred on the first two expanded leaf pairs, and larval mortality was highest between eclosion and establishment of the first instar. However, beetles apparently did not adjust clutch size according to leaf age.  相似文献
